asmoraius and hornblas have such a funny friend dynamic to me because they're both the kind of people who will stop at nothing in service of The Bit, but their Bits are wildly different
like i think asmoraius's Bits are simply stuff he enjoys doing and he thinks it's funny to take something overly seriously/literally and then wink at the audience. for him it's all sex stuff, which he genuinely enjoys, but he also plays it up because it's funny as hell and gets a reaction. and that's it, that's his whole deal, he knows who he is and he likes getting attention for it.
but hornblas's Bits are much more interesting in terms of Why he does them, and i think it comes down to him being fundamentally Emo (whereas asmoraius is much more of a romantic and glam type goth), by which i mean, he doesn't know who he is. on some level. and he's full of existential Angst about it.
now, i dont know that it's ever stated outright, but it's heavily implied that he never had a particular Station within hell, he simply had a Job, which was to summon demons to and fro, and he himself was free to fuck around the rest of the time. he seems to have spent most of his time pulling elaborate pranks and schemes, and the only connection i can draw between them is that they tend to be collaborative. he's also said to be "constantly leading demons astray" and good at "getting people to follow him wherever he goes"
combine this with his other consistent descriptions--that he is moody, prone to isolation, sensitive to negative feedback, and the de facto leader of any group he's in--and it's pretty obvious that leading people into funny situations, specifically, is the only way he knows how to bond with others.
and i think this is directly due to the fact that he doesn't have a Station, which is shown to be a super important part of how demons identify themselves and form communities. he has a Job that ranks him above everyone else and prevents him from forming genuine peer-to-peer relationships.
what happens to your sense of identity when you can't form lateral relationships? it fucking withers away into dust is what it does
we don't get to see him define himself (before the ending), but we do get to see how misroch thinks he defines himself (i.e. entirely around his One Special Ability), and i think the pushback misroch gets from belzagor about this, combined with the many other interests that hornblas is said to have, would indicate that hornblas has spent a lot of time trying to distance himself from that role, or at least to find out who he is outside of it. and i think we can also see that he hasn't been successful, because he's still super sensitive to rejection and misroch still thinks his whole identity is based in his Job.
and that leads directly to his final decision to leave. someone desperate for connection, with no tools to create it, and too much rejection sensitivity to handle relatively normal relationships, who feels isolated by their one assigned identity and trapped within it--- is going to be super receptive to someone offering them the ultimate get out of jail hell free card.
.....and if i could add one final observation: narratively, he's placed directly opposite misroch, and so we might expect to see some of misroch's issues mirrored in him. and i think we do:
misroch knows who they are, but struggles to value themselves. hornblas values himself very highly, but doesn't know who he is.

Look mom I'm listening to podcasts again
I've been on sort of a podcast listening binge lately. Between the school year making my commutes longer to being able to spend more time focused on work projects uninterrupted, I've had a lot more time to just vibe out and take in a good story or two. I've been catching up on some that I left hanging after work started calling us back to the office, and I also picked up a bunch from a serial fiction recommendation thread elsewhere.
The first one of these I ended up cracking open was Brimstone Valley Mall. Set in the few days before Y2K, the story follows a group of demons from Hell masquerading as humans in a band, as they try to figure out why one of them has gone missing on the cusp of biggest gig of their lives. It's a pretty rad setup, and the story's paced well enough that once everyone's on the same page (where exactly is Hornblas?) I was genuinely interested enough to power through the back half of the season. I give this a pretty solid recommendation.
I have some issues with some of the knowing wink humor of being set in the 90s (no, man, I really don't need a three minute diatribe about how hilarious it is that one character thinks that cell phones aren't going to take off), and there's one really bad over 9000 reference that nearly made me switch to something else. I think it's especially a bummer because there are a lot of genuinely funny moments in the show, but the writing feeling like it has to lean on "haha what if the Wallace Didney Association overtook all media!" really drags down the mood. It smooths over after the first few episodes, so it's worth powering through. I know the second season is starting up recording now, so I only hope some of this feedback went their way after the end of the first season.
Solid listen, though, and each episode is like 20-25 minutes combining up to about four hours of run time.

In hell, you’re assigned to do something, and you figure out how to do it. But human jobs? Belzagor Smith — it was the only human last name she could think of, okay, not everyone has an elaborate backstory (Asmoraius) or a total disregard for naming conventions (Misroch) or a deep amount of care for how first and last names flow together and making sure that it sounds nicely (Hornblas) — is apparently not very hireable.
The first week in south central Pennsylvania, and all the bumps in the road. 2.7k. Written as a charity commission for @candidateofloyalty!

Let's talk about Brimstone Valley Mall (@brimstonevalleymall ) from The Whisper Forge. Written and directed by Kristen DiMercurio (Dr. Sally Grissom from Ars Paradoxica). A fiction, comedy, mystery podcast. The year is 1999, and four demons, Belsagor, Misroch, Hornblas, and Asmoraius have been sent up from hell to sow discord and evil among the living, as part of the fight between good and evil. It's supposed to be a punishment to earn their way back into Satan's good graces, but the secret is, they don't want to go back to hell, they LIKE it up on the surface, so their goal is to make enough evil and discord that they can stay, but not so much that they earn their way back. Studied incompetence. *Besides* it's hard to get in time for band practice down in hell. So they all share a house together as roomies, and they all work at the Mall. Ahh yes, pre-Y2K mall vibes. Asmoraius is a succubus who works at Hot Topic and is hassled by goth kids, and just got a preppy boy friend whose a really good guy, *maybe* too good? Misroch is a hellish cook who's neurotic, bad at pretending to be human, and works at Weiner World, where he busily tries to come up with new recipes to out compete the other places in the food court, and fails horribly. Maybe it would help if he didn't keep human hands in the fryer, but who can say. Belsagor is Hornblas' BFF and works at Gadget Hut, and might have accidentally created the Tomagotchi, which creates *way* too many "Sin Coins" than she would like. And Hornblas, who is the lead singer of their band, Mall Rat--he was supposed to start work at Weiner World today, but he's gone missing...and now Xaphan, the Stoker of the Bellows of Hell, has come up to join the gang and knows *literally* nothing about surface life. Uuuuugggh. But at least she likes Misroch's cuisine, so that's something. But seriously, where *the hell* is Hornblas?? There's no way he would abandon them right before Y2K! It's just fun from top to bottom. Rediculous and full of nostalgic late 90s vibes. In the fight for good and evil, you'll strangely be rooting for evil, maybe just this once. 10, 30ish minute episodes in season 1, hopefully waiting for season 2.
