One thing I hate so fucking much about people dig up shit to “cancel” people for is that they are never part of the affected demographic. They are not looking for shit someone did wrong 10 years ago because they want to make sure they’re a good person, they’re doing it because they want an excuse to hate them.
The obvious consequence of this, however, is that suddenly an entire demographic is deeply uncomfortable with a creator who once brought them joy.
A thread recently came out about how when Wilbur Soot was 19 he made a lot of very harmful antisemitic jokes. He is now 25 years old. He has talked numerous times about how much he hates the person he was before he was about 22, and how much he’s grown since then. He’s demonstrated this growth too.
The person who published this thread was not jewish and I would assume that the person who gave them the information is not either.
I am jewish. Seeing these screenshots of “jokes” about the genocide of my people fundamentally hurt me. These screenshots do not show his current beliefs or behaviors. It would be impossible to find these jokes if you hadn’t gone actively searching for them. However I still felt betrayed and panicked, no matter how much I knew that Wilbur has changed. I do not know if I can ever watch his content again and find comfort.
This is the problem with digging into peoples past this way. It is never, and never has been, a selfless act nor a form of activism. It is the very opposite. It is the exploitation of marginalized identities to justify your dislike of someone.

The only thing is Yeosang needing to have more lines plus other issues they need to correct now like not collabing with nft companies to say one.
Also I don't entirely trust Eden for obvious reasons bc of the bad line distribution, tho I don't think he is the only responsable, but firstly there is more story to it that you can see searching on yt "210616 Hongjoong Jukjae late night workshop" that makes you understand him (tho still was obviously bad) and you can tell is all in the past (the resentment idk bc sometimes like in that link they called him out but also indicates they are in good terms if they can openly talk about it no?). As for now they seem to get along just fine even if it's just as co-workers and there are proofs to it. And who knows is Hj or Atz secretly doesn't like him but for what we know there is nothing that indicates that.
thank you for offering that thread i was trying to hunt it down but couldn't recall the user who made is so i'm very grateful you provided it TT i don't agree with everything said in either thread and i think both hold a good amount of bias in their respective directions still, but the first thread was accurate to the story eden himself told. however, i disagree that the only current issue now is yeosang needing to have more lines and nfts, i believe there are far many more issues that kq need to address as a business.
not only just yeosang's lines but also the issue of him consistently expressing desires to do both vocal and dance covers but never being given the opportunity to do either. yunho as well has talked about wanting to do a dance live and this has yet to happen. mingi expressed wanting to do a mixtape and said that the company said no. yunho, the main dancer of the group, has not been given opportunities to do dancing related activities on his own since predebut. he featured in an mnet dance documentary alongside jongho for a total of maybe 8 seconds earlier this year but aside from that he is often pushed to the back of dance portions in songs and not given enough recognition by his own company as the main dancer of the group.
also. i am well aware of the entire story behind eden and i never stated that there is bad blood or animosity between the two. in fact i directly stated otherwise in another ask i answered:

I found Call Me Menace yesterday, at around 3 am in the morning and then proceeded to read it and the available parts of Vilains Never Retire. I was hoping the next part would come out sooner rather than later, because the story was amazing, and I craved more. I was delighted to find that part 4 came out today, and I'm writing this after I've finished reading it. The whole story is brilliant and amazing and I'd love to see more of your work.
But anyway, as for the actual question, how do you come up with and weave in all of those details in your writing? Is it something you plan beforehand or do you come up with it on the fly? If it's a combination, then how much of each do you do?
Anyways, once again, the Synoverse is fantastic.

It depends on what you mean by 'details,' I think. A lot of it comes from spur-of-the-moment ideas. I'm not sure if I have ADHD or just what my mom jokingly calls 'ADHD-by-proxy' since both her and my brother have it, so weaving different threads of thought together and juggling multiple topics is kind of just my natural state of being at this point.
Other things are more if-this-then-what's-reasonable-for-that. For example, Synovus gets caught by surprise in Call Me Menace when Athena shows up with Alexandria. They were surprised out of sleep. You can't really set alarms that far out, and Athena moves fast, so the alarms are at set increasing intervals, like a really, really annoying alarm clock. Synovus wears a costume that covers the entirety of their body - ergo, they don't need to do the normal hair-and-teeth routine when getting dressed, particularly in they're in a hurry. They haven't slept, so when they go to have a conversation about morality, they want some caffeine. Can't drink in a helmet, so helmet comes off. Still haven't had time to go tend to personal hygiene, so Synovus's got a bedhead.
Things like the concrete joke and the garbage bags references developed naturally - concrete because I realized that it was the most common building material I could think of getting thrown around in hero movies, and figured Synovus would have developed a particular distaste for it. The garbage joke was initially just something I wanted to give Alexandria as an indicator of her character, and then it became a conscious call-back when Alex and Syn were starting to find common ground. (And also a joke about all-black costumes)
Other times, however, I will completely forget to include things. For example, there was supposed to be a scene in either VNR 1 or 2, before the Villain meeting, where Athena tried to get Synovus to swear to protect Alexandria, no matter what. Syn kinda half-dodged it, and left Athena believing that they'd sworn to it, which gives the end of that chapter much more weight. However, my brain completely ate that scene and it never made it to paper.
Whoops.
(Luckily, I do think it still works - Athena is instead referencing that Synovus didn't tell them the whole truth in Call Me Menace, or in the time since, but I do understand why some readers were confused by that.)

“Get a translator,” Captain Jonah was calling towards the open door, people scrambling to find someone who could understand what the young woman was saying.
“I know a little that I can help you with.” Officer Lumburg let himself into the interrogation room and sat next to Jade, briefly introducing himself in that same language she had spoken.
“Officer Lumburg will help by translating for me. We caught you robbing a medical lab. We also have you on camera, so don’t deny it.” She waits for the translation to be done and the young woman sighs and then shrugs.
Mouth moving as she mumbles some more russian.
“She says that she passed out from lack of food. She has food in her bag you took.”
“You can eat once we are done here.” Jade holds up a paper, “we also have reason to believe that you may be involved in the murder of a local man.” She waited and Leon held his breath watching, if the girl gave any indication to the statement — instead she sat back, frowning. More words.
“She won’t answer until she eats.”

“Okay, Wyck, thank you for the update.”  Her footsteps didn’t falter at all, and she could see Hesting Tower, the tall pillar cut through the center of the city.  “Here I go.” All or nothing, bitch.
She kneeled on the ledge there, one shin parallel to the roof of the brick building she was perched on. Soon enough little rows of lights made their way across the street below her, she could make out the uniformed bodies of the patrol officers.  Usually they were very easy to avoid if you knew which direction they were heading. Normally they weren’t seven minutes ahead of schedule.
The schedule change was part of the new security in place within the city limits thanks to terrorists trying to contaminate the blood transfusion center’s supply with an undetectable toxin a few years back, it seemed a repeat was hinted at happening once more. While it kept the citizens believing that they were safe from harm and that they could trust the medical empire that Doctor Derrickson Ehvtz had created just forty years ago.
Yes, good ol’ Doctor Ehvtz. His face was plastered on a billboard when you entered forty-five, treated like a god. It was disgusting.

SHORT
The smooth panel of wall at the bottom shifted under her touch and she pried at it with shaking fingers. Were the nightmares a warning about this? Pulling out a case wrapped in a dirty cloth she opened it to grab the syringe gun, metal freezing to her skin. However, the relief at having the weight in her grasp was short lived, the little shots of what she needed were not in there. A curse escaped her lips, too loud for her ears, as she hunted for them in the case, hoping one rolled out of its place and was lying on the edge.
No such luck.
Alexia’s fingers brushed a small round pill as long as the length of the tip of her pinkie finger to the middle knuckle. None of the vials for the gun were there, but a suppressant was, and she was thankful, that little yellow pill would do the trick. It would prolong the destruction in her body like the injection, but she’d have to take the capsules weekly instead of a shot every six months.

SURE
The extra lacings and fastens made sure they stayed on, once when she was very young a shoe had fallen off, thankfully into a dumpster so she wasn’t caught. It had been a mortifying experience as she had to shuffle along the street wet from the storm that had suddenly come on.
She locked a harness around her, one that she got through the underground because it was made from designs from weaponry used to fight people like her. The buckles and clasps clicked as they locked and straps were pulled to tighten it.
Alexia hit that same panel again and the shelf slid in with a soft hum and a purple light lit up inside the drawer underneath as it slid out, a glowing keypad illuminating the room, begging for the passcode to release the glass over the weapons stored there.
“Hello, ma’am.” The familiar voice of her A.I came out of the wall. “Passcode please.”

SIGN
A breeze blew a few strands of curly hair around her face as she backed up. “Wyck, trajectory from this angle?”
Her robotic partner in crime came to life with a series of beepings, “landing is showing a chance for survival of eighty-nine percent.”
“Eighty-nine?” More strands of red hair curled and twisted in the wind, “what did they do, add spikes to the floor? A button that if you step on it little lasers will slice you into cubes? A pit of man eating rats opens up and you fall into it?”
“Are you done?” A beep, “the glass doors to the balcony are closed. While calculating they were open yesterday, today they are not. Therefore, Lex, if you launch yourself at this angle there is an eleven percent chance that you will not be able to safely grab the railing above the door and swing in undetected. I also didn’t want you to smack into the glass door and get hurt, that would be embarrassing for both of us.”
“Smartass.” She huffed rolling her neck to pop the cervical joints of her spine.
“Good luck to you too, signing off.”

PLAN
Alexia stuffed another bar of sweet breaded meat into her mouth, chewing slowly. It had gone off just like she planned. Getting the files wasn’t the hard part, none of it was hard actually, too easy for such an amount of money.
Well, compared to what the man was going to give her.
See, his wife had found his messages — and after a tear filled conversation at a bar overheard by a once upon a time customer — the woman had her number and called her making a request for the positive tests and files, while it didn’t necessarily didn’t seem to make a difference at first the files would keep a judge from deciding that the wife, the obvious breadwinner, would pay him.
While Alexia had committed to the job assigned to her, not liking to betray them without a good reason and lose out on money. She couldn’t refuse to help the woman. Plus the pay was better by triple.
After she had tucked the printed papers into a folder that she, then placed into a hidden slit on the inside of her jacket, she continued to search the records. Alexia didn’t need anything; she just was curious.

BLINK
“Sorry,” her silvery voice rang out in the space between them and Leon’s head turned to follow her down the steps, his partner looked her over once before turning to continue up the stairs that he stood in the middle of.
“Gwerder?”  He shakes his head as if to clear it from a fog, lids blinking to clear his vision.  “Job?”
Right, no time. He shakes his head, “Yeah. Just she looked familiar.” Leon couldn’t place how she seemed so familiar but he bit his tongue and headed out onto the bridge, the breeze seemed stronger the higher up they were.
“No cameras pointing as to where he would have had to jump from, no way to tell if it was a jump or if he was pushed. But the cameras at both entrances should have caught something.
His phone rang.
“Gwerder here.” Leon frowned, leaning over the side to peer down at the monument, a crowd forming to look at the carnage from above. He points and his partner gets the hint.

SMALL
All it read was scheduled infusion at ten-fifty.
She had time and walked back to where the vials were to take one— stuffing it into her jacket pocket opposite the file. “Wyck.”
Her A.I. beeped to life, “yes ma’am?”
“Record,” with a duck down so the sensor on her ear piece could see the storage units, full of embryos. No later did her mouth open, did the machine whirr and she held still as her ear piece beeped. She watched one of the tiny vials appeared in the center of the tube and a needle pushed through the top, with a click the liquid in the vial disappeared and her eyes followed the red liquid against the fluorescent lighting in the core. A smaller thinner needle pierced the amniotic sack the embryo was encased in and pumped the fluid to mix with the amniotic fluid.
As soon as it started the needle was gone and the process started over until one entire row was filled. She noted that there were other embryos surrounded in fluid varying shades of red.

RUN
With the sweat cooling on her skin, she kicked off the simple quilt on her bed and rolled to sit on the edge of the mattress. Her feet pressed flat — a mattress on the hardwood floor was all it was — and walked to the bathroom feeling around in the dark. For fear of what she, of what her face, would look like in the mirror she kept the light off too. The thought of her sweat soaked curls hanging limp and her bloodshot eyes didn’t entice her and wouldn’t be a great start to her day. Her heart was hammering behind her ribs as she lifted her hands to the faucet knobs to twist the cold on, watching the faint outline of the water run out of the spicket into the basin. With her breath echoing in the space as that feeling came back she cupped shaking hands under the water, letting it and splashed it on her face, hoping the real feeling of cold water would let her body realize that what she had dreamt was just that— a dream.
The cold water dripped from the tip of her nose, it ran in little trickles down her jaw and shin. In an impulsive decision she decided to stick her entire head under the water. It plastered her hair to her neck and face, and ran up her nose. She opened her mouth to breathe occasionally spitting out the water that trickled in. The darkness behind her eyelids giving way to her nightmare, the tightening of her chest becoming unbearable. The images replayed themselves on repeat even after she had opened her eyes. It felt as if she was slowly sinking into the floor, a floor that ceased to be there.

i did these posts with books i read in 2020 i think, bout to make another for black sails. this is just a yardstick for my progression with the series, aka my extensive nonsensical notes and quotes i liked etc. no clear indicators whos saying what and when, just Vibes and Real Drama Television so i'll generally remember whats Happening. watch out its quite a wordy fucknig thing if you press read more also i started at episode 4 of season1 for some fucking reason and it pisses me off immensely. Cliffhangers (stupid)
A cliffhanger ending is a plot device in fiction which features a main character in a precarious or difficult dilemma or confronted with a shocking revelation at the end of an episode or a film of serialized fiction (or even a chapter of a book, where this is not even, as stated later, economical). A cliffhanger is hoped to incentivize the audience to return to see how the characters resolve the dilemma. (wikipedia)
I do not like cliffhangers because of the way they alter the writing style of writers apparently addicted to them for no clear reason, and also because if the reason is clear, it is to give the audience a reason to return beyond the continuous quality of your series (assumed: for money), though this only slightly explains why this is done in book chapters.
The apparent need for them
On the one hand, ending especially a chapter at all if your story is multi-threaded is probably hard, but then there's chapter 16 in "The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" where Doughlas Adams rather obviously makes fun of this device, stating that "Stress and nervous tension are now serious Social problems in major parts of the galaxy" and going on to 'spoil' events and facts which would have slowly unfolded in the next chapter, including that they are of course not in mortal peril.
This shows the approximate (u|dys)topia I would apparently want instead, where no suspense is created across chapter boundaries, especially if the next chapter switches to a completely different perspective and thread of the story (though this is not actually on display in chapter 16). Imagining the cliffhanger would not exist in a more serious novel I'm rereading does not appear to have any downsides, except that it might get down the readers engagement with the novel if they have less points at which they have to continue reading, and so their sessions reading the novel are shorter overall, and so they think they like it less, because surely the way I binged through this book indicates it was well written all the way.(?)
Stress and nervous tension are actually at least mildly annoying in at least one part of the Galaxy
I would subjectively state that the feeling a cliffhanger induces just does not feel good. This does however call into question what I want to feel reading, and alternatively how bored I must be to consider feeling nothing an acceptable free time experience. Sample feelings include:
Romantic giddiness (e.g. in twilight by Stephenie Meyer) (not actually much more relaxed than suspense)
Considering the Implications of the presented Setup or Universe
Considering the authors intent behind some pun, character trait, or cliffhanger (oops)
Indignant awe at the absolute planning they must have to write 300 pages at all, which are also on average nonboring, especially considering the shortness of my school essays (of course not in comparison to a novel but to other essays of my friends or whatever)
The maybe-Contradiction in this with what I otherwise want from a book
I also do not like cover texts because they apparently ruin some of the suspense by just telling you the weird people in the book are vampires or even what the name of the most important one is. Considering there are different types of suspenses, this one kind of makes sense: it means that apparently I like slow revelations of the plot only if they do not seem delayed on purpose.
The strange fixation artists of a medium where they do not obviously boost sales have with Cliffhangers
It may just be some social self-expectation from hearing the phrase "to be continued" too many times, it might be the reader engagement, but I couldn't imagine a novelist who thinks to themselves: "my readers are sure going to consciously like how I am withholding information from them, and also wouldn't they like it so much if I did that at a chapter boundary". Firstly, chapter boundaries don't really mean that much, and conventional suspense feels less forced to me, as I would apparently want a novel to sound like it's not plying psychological tricks on me. Secondly, thinking a cliffhanger is good like a consistently constructed fantasy world that isn't confusing, or a joke, or a sudden reveal i didn't expect, I still don't get what I'm supposed to like about a cliffhanger.

Time Loops and Hair Dye - 9/25/23
This dream contains some spoilers for Madoka Magica's ending. If you haven't watched it and have considered doing so in the future, I advise you not to read it!
In my dream last night, I met Homura Akemi from Madoka Magica. This dream took place after Madoka had made her wish and became the savor of Magical girls.
Homura was trying to find a way to go back in time in order to try and get Madoka to be human again. I was able to help her come to some form of realization about some kind of "threads" attached to certain events in the time line. She managed to find a way to cut some of these threads, shown in a physical timeline, which, with each one cut, the timeline would get pushed back slightly. It was in a way, incremental time-travel. She pushed the timeline back to just a little bit before the very beginning before she stopped.
Not long after, she ended up cutting my hair, for some reason. From my perspective, it felt like it was cut only an inch or less from my scalp. She also put some hair dye as well as some bleach in my hair. At one point I got bleach on my fingertips, which became paper-white after a few minutes. After a while I asked if I should rinse it out, but she (or someone else in the room) told me that the colors weren't right yet, and I needed to keep waiting, so I did.
Not much later, I went into the bathroom to see what had been done to my hair. In my reflection, my hair was shoulder-length. The colors were a bit uncoordinated, but they didn't look too bad. My hair was much darker in the dream than in real life, and there was no indication that bleach had been put in my hair. The dye put on gave my hair a iridescent look.
Notes - 1. My hair is brown in real life, however it appeared to be black in this dream. 2. I have no idea what the setting of this dream was. Definitely not a house. Everything was pretty dark in color.

Do you happen to watch short films? For me, it's usually the result of coming across this type of movie rather than targeted searching. After all, is it possible to build a bond between the viewer and the character in 20 minutes? Is this enough time to get carried away with the plot?
However, in the case of Cognitio I didn't ask myself these questions, because a few years ago an accidental click led me to watch it. Finding it again after years was a challenge. And since I searched so persistently, it means that the questions above can be answered in the affirmative.

Quoting the description:
The boy Tobias is hospitalized in a psychiatric institution. Here, he meets the boy Emil, a boy with an entirely different view on life and the situation he and Tobias is in. The two boys develop a close friendship that puts the mind and boundaries of Tobias to the test.
The strongest point of Cognitio is consistency, which is expressed in gentle suggesting. To achieve this, you need well-thought-out frames, dialogues, and sophistication.
The main plot is not about building the emotional relationship between characters; this thread pulsates on the second plan. I think this in itself makes the movie an interesting position between movies with the BL theme. Tobias doesn't share Emil's enthusiasm, who talks about girls time after time. A watchful eye will catch the boy's consternation and that he is not taking up the subject. These are indications, that he is not interested in the opposite gender. This is also suggested by the scene with his fantasy, where he imagines someone's touch. Although we only see close-ups of parts of the body, we have no doubt who this person is.
Consistency also manifests in the minimalist soundtrack used throughout the film. It is a repetitive voice and slow piano sounds. The background music appears even when teenagers get to know each other, when they smile, or during a liberating dance together. The feeling of coldness accompanies us also during these scenes, which are supposed to bring joy. I think this is the factor that allows you to connect with the main character and get into his emotions.

I'm pretty sure Emil was just a figment of Tobias' imagination. The reasons for this appear already in the psychiatrist's room. The camera leads us deep into the character's imagination, defining the plane on which we are. During the jealousy scene, the newly met man talks to Tobias but doesn't turn around when Emil butts in their conversation. When the orderlies enter Tobias' room to search it, they say Hey Tobias without mentioning Emil. After the sedative injection, Emil only appears next to Tobias for a while and then disappears; he goes away symbolically when the hallucinations subside. These are exemplary scenes from which you can pick up suggestions, directing you to the path of basic interpretation.
However, this is not the end. My mind craves for considering other possibilities as well. It is very interesting to approach the subject from different perspectives. Why? The structure of the film allows for this. By contemplating, we can wander into the deeper corners of the human psyche. If the gate remains open, I feel invited.
Let's assume that Emil really existed and he was in the hospital. How will the situations mentioned above apply to this? The newly met man could not turn around at Emil's words, because he simply ignored him. He had a reason for it because Emil had already shown his reluctance towards him during the scene on the lawn. When Emil interrupted their conversation at the table, the man left because he felt hostile. When the orderlies entered the room, they addressed their words only to Tobias. It is not said that they hadn't seen Emil before and didn't search his room. After the sedative injection situation, maybe Emil visited Tobias. However, he, being still half-conscious, could only have a fleeting sense of someone's presence. One thing is certain - if Emil existed, it would be difficult not to call him a possessive egoist. He wanted to bring Tobias down to keep him by his side.

The starting point for alternative considerations is the fact we don't know why Tobias ended up in a mental hospital. Perhaps because of the trauma associated with the one-sided feeling he had for a boy? We cannot exclude that Emil really existed in his life before the reality of the white walls. Now he could become a kind of flashback where Tobias got stuck. Maybe he processes the painful relationship over and over again, maybe under different characters that are products of his imagination. These, in turn, may be projections of fears that only unhappy love awaits him. After waking up, Tobias should be furious with Emil; but I get a distinct impression that he misses him. Or maybe he misses something that's over because he became a prisoner of the past?
You might say that Cognitio is about mental illness, but is it only about it? For me, it is also a metaphor for overwhelming loneliness, from which the only escape is our inner world - safe space - imagination.
In the end, I must praise the interesting form of the film: in less than 20 minutes they managed to include the compositional frame, and its closing part is also a plot twist.
Cognitio is worth watching at least twice. For the first time to let yourself be surprised. For the second time, to analyze the film anew, having the necessary knowledge. And here the short form turns out to be an undeniable asset.

#1) Identify the Enemy
No matter your reason for picking up this book, I have good news for you. Regardless of your health goals or challenges, the foundation for alleviating, healing, or in many cases preventing health challenges begins with facilitating your body’s natural inborn ability to adapt to and recover from stress.
We all have stress—it’s inescapable. In fact, stress is really what makes life challenging and fulfilling. It is often in overcoming stressful challenges that we find life’s deeper meaning. At the same time, however, stress must be properly managed. or it will become destructive. Giving our bodies what they need to cope with and recover from stress begins with changing our lifestyle choices. It has to do with adding the right foods and activities first, then slowly eliminating the foods and practices that are detrimental to your overall health.
Myth Vs. Fact
Myth: “I feel healthy, so I am healthy.”
Fact: Imagine, if you will, a battlefield. Both sides have been fighting for weeks with heavy casualties. On the one side, an army serving a totalitarian dictator who seeks world domination. On the other side, a group of freedom fighters—locals who don’t want to see their land taken over by a madman. The commanding officer of the freedom fighters is burdened with the battle. No matter what approach he takes with his men, he is met with resistance at every turn. It’s as if the enemy knows his every move. But how can they? Some days he doesn’t plan his move until the last minute before he engages the enemy. He trusts a few good men, career men who would give their lives for him at a moment’s notice. What he doesn’t know is that one of those men is a traitor. He spies on the freedom fighters and reports to the enemy on a regular basis. Every day people are diagnosed with dental disease (cavities), heart disease (high blood pressure/cholesterol), and all types of cancer (breast, colon, prostate) and don’t even feel a single pain, lump, sensitivity or symptom. Many suffer heart attacks, cancer, strokes, and other “sudden” illnesses when they feel perfectly healthy— some even immediately after seemingly good checkups with their doctors.
How you feel doesn’t matter as much as what is really happening inside your body. Not only that, but most of us don’t really feel as healthy as we think we do— we have just gotten used to masking fatigue with caffeine, aches with medications, and chalking up symptoms to our age rather than what is really causing them. Until we identify that stress is the enemy in our own camp, then it won’t matter how much we try to eat right, or exercise, or take vitamins. Ultimately we will lose the battle to get healthy and stay healthy because we aren’t fighting the right enemy. We are just shadow boxing.
You want to feel really healthy? Then realize and act on the fact that stress is your biggest enemy in the fight for health! You will be surprised how fit, strong, and healthy you can be even into your 80s and 90s if you just identify and neutralize the stressors on your body, and give it what it needs to begin once again to adapt to and recover from those stressors.
#2) Identify Your Vision

If man created it, or it is filled with preservatives or sits on the shelf forever, it has more than likely been altered in harmful ways. Look at margarine; it’s not a real food. It is a combination of artificial chemicals that give a certain taste. We put it in our mouths, but it is not a naturally occurring substance. Then, to feel satisfied we binge—reaching for foods that please the palate, but stress our internal systems because they have so little of what our bodies really need.

Giving Quality, Motivating Feedback

The new writer in your writing group just sent out their latest story and it’s...not exciting. You know it needs work, but you’re not sure why, or where they should focus.
This is the blog post for you!
Before we get started, it’s important to note that this post isn’t aimed at people doing paid editing work. In the professional world, there are developmental editors, line editors, and copy editors, who all have a different focus. That is not what we’re covering here. Today, we want to help you informally give quality, detailed, encouraging feedback to your fellow writers.
The Unwritten Rules
Everyone seems to have a different understanding of what it means to beta, edit, or give feedback on a piece, so it’s best to be on the same page with your writer before you get started.
Think about what type of work you’re willing and able to do, how much time you have, and how much emotional labor you’re willing to take on. Then talk to your writer about their expectations.
Responsibilities as an editor/beta may include:
Know what the author’s expectation is and don’t overstep. Different people in different stages of writing are looking for, and will need, different types of support. It’s important to know what pieces of the story they want feedback on. If they tell you they don’t want feedback on dialogue, don’t give them feedback on dialogue. Since many terms are ambiguous or misunderstood, it may help you to use the list of story components in the next section to come to an agreement with your writer on what you’ll review.
Don’t offer expertise you don’t have. If your friend needs advice on their horse book and you know nothing about horses, be clear that your read through will not include any horse fact checking. Don’t offer grammar advice if you’re not good at grammar. It doesn’t mean you shouldn’t give feedback on things you do notice, but don’t misrepresent yourself, and understand your own limits.
Give positive and constructive feedback. It is important for a writer to know when something is working well. Don’t skimp on specific positive feedback — this is how you keep writers motivated. On the other hand, giving constructive feedback indicates where there are issues. Be specific on what you’re seeing and why it’s an issue. It can be hard for someone to improve if they don’t understand what’s wrong.
Be clear about your timing and availability, and provide updates if either changes. Typically, you’ll be doing this for free, as you’re able to fit it in your schedule. But it can be nerve wracking to hand your writing over for feedback and then hear nothing. For everyone’s sanity, keep the writer up to date on your expected timeline and let them know if you’re delayed for some reason. If you cannot complete the project for them, let them know. This could be for any reason — needing to withdraw, whatever the cause, is valid! It could be because working with the writer is tough, you don’t enjoy the story, life got tough, you got tired, etc. All of that is fine; just let them know that you won’t be able to continue working on the project.
Be honest if there are story aspects you can’t be objective about. Nearly all of your feedback is going to be personal opinion. There are some story elements that will evoke strong personal feelings. They can be tropes, styles, specific characterizations, or squicks. In these cases, ask the writer to get another opinion on that particular aspect, or, if you really want to continue, find similar published content to review and see if you can get a better sense of how other writers have handled it.
Don’t get personal. Your feedback should talk about the characters, the narrator, the plotline, the sentence structure, or other aspects of the story. Avoid making ‘you’ statements or judgements, suggested or explicit, in your feedback. Unless you’re looking at grammar or spelling, most of the feedback you’ll have will be your opinion. Don’t present it as fact.
Your expectations of the writer/friend/group member you are working with may include:
Being gracious in accepting feedback. A writer may provide explanations for an issue you noticed or seek to discuss your suggestions. However, if they constantly argue with you, that may be an indicator to step back.
Being responsible for emotional reactions to getting feedback. While getting feedback can be hard on the ego and self esteem, that is something the writer needs to work on themselves. While you can provide reassurance and do emotional labor if you’re comfortable, it is also very reasonable to step back if the writer isn’t ready to do that work.
Making the final choice regarding changes to the work. The writer should have a degree of confidence in accepting or rejecting your feedback based on their own sense of the story. While they may consult you on this, the onus is on them to make changes that preserve the core of the story they want to tell.
Some people aren’t ready for feedback, even though they’re seeking it. You’re not signing up to be a psychologist, a best friend, or an emotional support editor. You can let people know in advance that these are your expectations, or you can just keep them in mind for your own mental health. As stated above, you can always step back from a project, and if writers aren’t able to follow these few guidelines, it might be a good time to do that. (It’s also worth making sure that, as a writer, you’re able to give these things to your beta/editor.)
Specificity is Key
One of the hardest things in editing is pinning down the ‘whys’ of unexciting work, so let’s split the writing into several components and talk about evaluations you can make for each one.
You can also give this list to your writer ahead of time as a checklist, to see which things they want your feedback on.
Generally, your goal is going to be to help people improve incrementally. Each story they write should be better than the previous one, so you don’t need to go through every component for every story you edit. Generally, I wouldn’t suggest more than 3 editing rounds on any single story that isn’t intended for publication. Think of the ‘many pots’ theory — people who are honing their craft will improve more quickly by writing a lot of stories instead of incessantly polishing one.
With this in mind, try addressing issues in the order below, from general to precise. It doesn’t make sense to critique grammar and sentence structure if the plot isn’t solid, and it can be very hard on a writer to get feedback on all these components at once. If a piece is an early or rough draft, try evaluating no more than four components at a time, and give specific feedback on what does and doesn’t work, and why.
High Level Components
Character arc/motivation:
Does each character have a unique voice, or do they all sound the same?
In dialogue, are character voices preserved? Do they make vocabulary and sentence-structure choices that fit with how they’re being portrayed?
Does each character have specific motivations and focuses that are theirs alone?
Does each character move through the plot naturally, or do they seem to be shoehorned/railroaded into situations or decisions for the sake of the plot? Be specific about which character actions work and which don’t. Tell the writer what you see as their motivation/arc and why—and point out specific lines that indicate that motivation to you.
Does each character's motivation seem to come naturally from your knowledge of them?
Are you invested (either positively or negatively) in the characters? If not, why not? Is it that they have nothing in common with you? Do you not understand where they’re coming from? Are they too perfect or too unsympathetic?
Theme:
It’s a good idea to summarize the story and its moral from your point of view and provide that insight to the writer. This can help them understand if the points they were trying to make come through. The theme should tie in closely with the character arcs. If not, provide detailed feedback on where it does and doesn’t tie in.
Plot Structure:
For most issues with plot structure, you can narrow them down to pacing, characterization, logical progression, or unsatisfying resolution. Be specific about the issues you see and, when things are working well, point that out, too.
Is there conflict that interests you? Does it feel real?
Is there a climax? Do you feel drawn into it?
Do the plot points feel like logical steps within the story?
Is the resolution tied to the characters and their growth? Typically this will feel more real and relevant and satisfying than something you could never have seen coming.
Is the end satisfying? If not, is it because you felt the end sooner and the story kept going? Is it because too many threads were left unresolved? Is it just a matter of that last sentence or two being lackluster?
Point Of View:
Is the point of view clear and consistent?
Is the writing style and structure consistent with that point of view? For example, if a writer is working in first person or close third person, the style of the writing should reflect the way the character thinks. This extends to grammar, sentence structure, general vocabulary and profanity outside of the dialogue.
If there is head hopping (where the point of view changes from chapter to chapter or section to section), is it clear in the first few sentences whose point of view you’re now in? Chapter headers can be helpful, but it should be clear using structural, emotional, and stylistic changes that you’re with a new character now.
Are all five senses engaged? Does the character in question interact with their environment in realistic, consistent ways that reflect how people actually interact with the world?
Sometimes the point of view can feel odd if it’s too consistent. Humans don’t typically think logically and linearly all the time, so being in someone’s head may sometimes be contradictory or illogical. If it’s too straightforward, it might not ‘feel’ real.
Be specific about the areas that don’t work and break them down based on the questions above.
Pacing:
Does the story jump around, leaving you confused about what took place when?
Do some scenes move quickly where others drag, and does that make sense within the story?
If pacing isn’t working, often it’s about the level of detail or the sentence structure. Provide detailed feedback about what you care about in a given scene to help a writer focus in.
Setting:
Is the setting clear and specific? Writing with specific place details is typically more rooted, interesting, and unique. If you find the setting vague and/or uninteresting and/or irrelevant, you might suggest replacing vague references — ‘favorite band’, ‘coffee shop on the corner’, ‘the office building’ — with specific names to ground the setting and make it feel more real.
It might also be a lack of specific detail in a scene that provides context beyond the characters themselves. Provide specific suggestions of what you feel like you’re missing. Is it in a specific scene, or throughout the story? Are there scenes that work well within the story, where others feel less grounded? Why?
Low Level Components
Flow/Sentence Structure:
Sentence length and paragraph length should vary. The flow should feel natural.
When finding yourself ‘sticking’ on certain sentences, provide specific feedback on why they aren’t working. Examples are rhythm, vocabulary, subject matter (maybe something is off topic), ‘action’ vs ‘explanation’, passive vs. active voice.
Style/Vocabulary:
Writing style should be consistent with the story — flowery prose works well for mythic or historical pieces and stories that use that type of language are typically slower moving. Quick action and short sentences are a better fit for murder mysteries, suspense, or modern, lighter fiction.
Style should be consistent within the story — it may vary slightly to show how quickly action is happening, but you shouldn’t feel like you’re reading two different stories.
SPAG (Spelling and Grammar):
Consider spelling and grammar in the context of the point of view, style and location of the story (eg, England vs. America vs. Australia).
If a point of view typically uses incorrect grammar, a SPAG check will include making sure that it doesn’t suddenly fall into perfect grammar for a while. In this case, consistency is going to be important to the story feeling authentic.
Word Count Requirements:
If the story has been written for a project, bang, anthology, zine, or other format that involves a required word count minimum or maximum, and the story is significantly over or under the aimed-for word count (30% or more/less), it may not make sense to go through larger edits until the sizing is closer to requirements. But, as a general rule, I’d say word count is one of the last things to worry about.

The best thing we can do for another writer is to keep them writing. Every single person will improve if they keep going. Encouragement is the most important feedback of all.
