I've been making pottery bowls for Empty Bowls to benefit the hungry. It reminded me of a painting I did a long time ago that depicts the plight of the homeless and hungry in America. In my painting they are lining up for big bowls of blue. The marks I made on the table then look like masks to me now as the pandemic continues. . . . . . #emptybowls #emptybowlproject #homelessnessawareness #homelessness #hungerinamerica #charitywork #bekindalways #judithrhue #abstractpainting #poorpeople #poverty (at Scottsdale, Arizona) https://www.instagram.com/p/CR96Gs9J9E0/?utm_medium=tumblr

Feeding America and Leo Burnett Partnered to Create the Face of Hunger in America by Analyzing 1,000 People in Need
Tumblr media
Relief group Feeding America recently partnered with creative agency Leo Burnett and Ad Council to create a new PSA. The new PSA was created to challenge people’s perception of hunger. They did this by creating an AI-generated face of Hunger in America. Feeding America created this face by analyzing 1,000 people in need in America.

Feeding America and Leo Burnett Partnered to Create the Face of Hunger in America by Analyzing 1,000 People in Need
The PSA from Feeding America and Leo Burnett was created to challenge people’s perceptions of hunger. They noticed people saw hunger as a problem faced by only those living on the streets or in underdeveloped countries. But the facts state that 37 million Americans or 1 in 8 American are suffering in Hunger. According to Feeding America, these people are the kinds of families you see around you each day. So to raise awareness and to change people’s perception Feeding America worked with Leo Burnett to create a virtual visage based on the faces of 1,000 hunger-afflicted Americans. The photos used reflected the actual demographics seen in USDA food security data. They used visual effects tools to overlay that composite face onto a real person, engineering a passably realistic-looking spokeswoman for the issue. To create the face, the agency used a generative adversarial network, or GAN, a cutting-edge form of machine learning in which one neural network hones artificial images until another can no longer tell the difference between them and real-life photos https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yhvy6P-sj2A
More on the Campaign from Feeding America and Leo Burnett
To help promote the campaign the organization plans to include television and radio spots as well as print, outdoor and digital ads. The ad spaced were made available through Ad Council’s network of media partners.
Feeding America and Leo Burnett
Leo Burnett Senior Art Director Daniel Jaramillo spoke about the campaign. He stated that they found that people tend to think of hunger in stereotypes. People usually have images of homeless or third-world countries. This is not the only reality because it affects 1 in 8 Americans. A fact they are trying to show with their campaign. Catherine Davis, chief marketing and communications officer at Feeding America also spoke about the campaign. She talked about how for many people, hunger in America is invisible.  She stated that they don’t know what it looks like or feels like. According to her, the  PSA challenges people to see hunger in a different way by creating a lifelike portrait that represents the millions of real people who experience hunger. Read the full article

Closing Remarks
Hunger in America is a current issue that is often overlooked in our society. Food insecurity, the inadequate access to proper nutrition, is the form hunger takes in America. Despite not having a strong movement in mainstream media, there is plenty of information available to help educate and raise awareness of the related problems of poverty and hunger. Visual media platforms are a great way to raise awareness through blogs, videos, documentaries, photo essays, articles, etc. I believe that through solidarity, education and charity we as a country can progress towards dignity and justice by battling poverty and the other aspects of America that contribute to the issue of hunger. I hope that through this blog an increase in availability of information on the topic of hunger in america can inspire action in others to fight the causes and results of poverty and hunger.

Reverend James is a Vietnam veteran who has served his country, and served his fellow man as a pastor. In the 1990s, he was severely injured in an accident at work and told he would never walk again.
Despite the diagnosis, Rev. James walked again, but his persisting health issues meant that he could not work full-time to support himself and his wife. He needed help putting food on the table.
That’s when he learned about Operation Blessing’s partner, Joseph’s Storehouse, right in his area. He was able to receive much-needed food to help provide for  his family.
“It’  a blessing for anybody that comes here,” he said. “I’d like to say, ‘thank you so much for all the help you’ve given to us.’”
Prayer Point: Pray for American families struggling to make ends meet. Pray that they will connect with food pantries and local churches who can help them through difficult times.

Poverty, hunger, and obesity go hand in hand. For these migrant farmworkers in Salinas Valley, CA, working in fields of fresh produce does not mean they have the access to such nutritional food. Despite working inthe “salad bowl” these farmworkers rarely are able to buy fresh produce for themselves. Their low income and high costs of living prevent them from being able to afford nutritious food making them food insecure. As a result of their food insecurity they are more likelyto ourchase unhealthy food options because they tend to be cheaper and can be purchased in larger quanties; leading to an epidemic of obesity. Salinas Valley is just one window into a problem that is occuringacross the nation where poverty resultsin food insecurity, hunger and obesity.

“Jeremiah gets so excited when we start unloading the groceries and putting them away.  It’s almost like Christmas morning!”
Erika is a single mother to her 7-year-old son, Jeremiah. Despite working two jobs, sometimes finances are so tight she has to choose between buying groceries and paying for gas to make it to work.
“It makes you feel almost like a failure sometimes,” Erika said. “It’s very hard.  Finances are very tight. It’s been very tough to provide for Jeremiah and I.”
Last year, a friend from church told her about Operation Blessing’s partner in her area, House of Blessing. Now, she receives help to make sure her son does not go hungry.
“Since we’ve been going to House of Blessing, Jeremiah has never had to go hungry at  all,” she said. “Thank you so much to everybody…for not only feeding my family but for feeding our spirits.”
Prayer Point: Pray for hard-working families who still struggle to put food on the table. Pray that precious children like Jeremiah will never have to go to bed hungry.

Hungry American Kids
Hunger in America. That sounds strange doesn’t it? Typically when we hear about hunger crisis, we direct our minds to invision a far away land in a “impoverished” country somewhere in Africa. The truth is, hunger has struck Americans.....and not just adults but our very own children. Over the last few years, the media had focused on school performance in our schools and claiming, for a lack of better words, American kids are getting “dumber”. What if the source of this problem isn’t in the curriculum, but it is that the rumbling bellies are messing with kids’ ability to perform their best in school? Repeatedly it has been tested and proven that there is a correlation between food insecurity and students not performing well in school. Not only does malnutrition effect them mentally, but physically in their health. Failure of the immune system is directly correlated to lack of proper food. In response to recent media attention on child hunger in America, women like Lauren Puryear in New Jersey are couponing to donate food to those in need. Foundations such as No Kid Hungry are also working to improve the hunger crisis in our youth. It is so heartbreaking that our very own American kids are going hungry. Did you ever have to worry about going hungry as a kid?
