Okay so I know that BotW and totk are probably meant to be a soft reboot to the series to make it easier for the writers to just do whatever they think is cool, but I just need to talk about this.
Before playing tears of the kingdom I firmly believed that BotW and totk took place in the child timeline, but now that I've started playing totk I think they take place in the adult timeline. Bare in mind I'm only about half way through totk so far so I might be wrong about a lot of things here.
Ganon already exists, meaning that Ocarina of Time must have taken place even before the story we see at the start of the game engraved into the wall, so all of this has to take place after the timeline split. Despite this, everyone seems to credit Raru as the first king of hyrule. We know this can't actually be the case since this takes place after ocarina of time, when there was definitely a king of hyrule on the throne (even if we didn't actually see him in the game), so why is Raru credited as the first king of hyrule?
Because he is. Or at least, the first king of THIS version of hyrule. In the adult timeline the world was flooded by the golden godesses, which eventually led to the people of hyrule settling somewhere else, a kingdom that they called New Hyrule. But the hyrule that we see in BotW and TotK is not New Hyrule. If you look closely at the Spirit tracks map and the totk/botw map, you can see exactly where they seem to line up!
Notice the shape of the shoreline in ST compared to the shape of the cliffs that surround Hyrule in BotW. Yes there are some differences but for the most part they are strikingly similar, right down to the sort of square shape to the south and that pokey-out but to the north. In fact, this is definitely more consistent than most other parts of hyrule's geography.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not only that, but the cliffs are some of the highest landmasses that we see in BotW, if not THE highest. So high, in fact, that it's definitely not too far-fetched to say that they were largely untouched by the great flood. So why did everyone settle back in Old Hyrule? Because the sea level lowered too much, meaning that people would have had a much harder time accessing water. With Hyrule no longer completely flooded, and New Hyrule most likely running out of water, the people of New Hyrule moved back to Old Hyrule. Around this time, the Zonai descended from above and Raru became the first king of this new kingdom, hence why he is credited as the first king of Hyrule. Considering how long it's been, it's completely understandable that people would have forgotten that there were other Kingdoms of Hyrule before the current one (such as New Hyrule, and the original Hyrule).

Okay so, I spent some time today, while cleaning up and taking care of chores, listening to more TotK reviews. I tried my best to remove my own biases, and this is what I can conclude. -I DO think that the abilities in TotK give the player ultimate freedom. You can solve any puzzle or reach any area with any sort of solution, as long as your imagination can come up with it. There are very few limitations that these abilities have. There is a certain thrill in building a machine and seeing that it actually works. -I DON'T like, however, that in the name of giving the player freedom that lots of places feel pointless to even explore. Sure, I will be smugly satisfied with solving a very intricate puzzle in a shrine, or feel excited discovering a mine or forgotten temple in the Depths, but if the reward is lackluster then my motivation to even try starts to diminish. The game relies too much on the player satisfying their own curiosity and not on rewarding you for said curiosity, at least proportionally. -I DO believe that this game is the most direct an LoZ sequel has ever been. You revisit the same Hyrule. You meet people you met in BotW and get to check up on them. You get to see Hyrule rebuilding itself. You get to revisit familiar areas to see how they've fared. You do get to retread familiar ground while traversing it in a different enough way to make it feel fresh. -I DON'T like that, in the interest of making the game accessible to new players, that so many characters treat Link like a stranger. I'm sorry, you can argue all you want that LoZ is not about the story, but given that it feels like such a direct sequel it is very immersion breaking for people to not recognize Link. You're telling me that Link built an entire life with Zelda in his house in Hateno and no one recognizes him in that village? Please. -I DO agree that TotK's story is more...involved than BotW. HOWEVER- -I DON'T think it suits this gameplay format. I think TotK's main problem is that it was trying to satisfy the two fanbases that now exist: the open world lovers that really don't care too much for the story and the linear LoZ fans that want a more attractive story. It's hard to feel anything for the story when all you have is memories, and you the player are not directly involved. I know we all joke that Link is always dragged into somebody else's problems, but TotK reaaaally feels like Link is cleaning up someone else's mess. In other words, unless Nintendo proves me wrong here, I don’t think open world Zelda in its current format works well with a big story.
-To add to that. it feels weird that in a world that touts ultimate freedom for the player that the story is so linear. It just doesn’t work for me.
I will not talk about the problems with the plot itself I think we all know my opinion about it
-I DO think that TotK Ganondorf is very present in the game's environment. One reviewer made the comparison of the Depths, being filled with darkness, gloom, and very powerful monsters as a reflection of the world Ganondorf aims to create, a world that is oppressive and dangerous at every corner as all you try to do is mine resources you need while surviving, versus the Sky Islands reflecting Rauru's ideal world, where the threats are minimum, where exploration is a lot more relaxed and laid back, where the sun always shines and you feel at peace. Ganondorf is very present through the gloom hands chasing you and Phantom Ganon, the regional phenomenon, the memories, the approach to his lair, puppet Zelda screwing around with everyone etc.
-I DON’T think that makes Ganondorf a compelling antagonist in the game itself. This is also where I feel like there is a weakness in this game’s environmental storytelling. We never learn much about Ganondorf from himself, Wind Waker being the exception. We learn about him from the lore in the land itself and to be honest I think, for all the vastness TotK offers there is very little you can find that relates to the lore. When you think about it, outside of the geoglyphs the environment doesn’t offer many lore-specific clues. I think we could have learned so much about the Zonai from ruins but alas.
-To add onto Ganondorf, I don’t mind him being a powerhungry warlord, but I feel like something is missing. It feels like he exists in a vaccum where he talks and acts past everyone. For example, if he had interacted with Riju or the Sage of Lightning cementing that power meant everything to him in his abandonment of his people, I feel like it would have really made him feel a lot more cold hearted and terrifying.
-I DO think the soundtrack for TotK is amazing. I think Ganondorf’s theme in this game, the build up, the mixture with his renown leitmotif and the theme of the Calamity, is the best one yet for me. The soundtrack just lends so much atmosphere to the game and makes exploration something special.
-I still think that the sky islands and the depths are empty and don’t offer much, especially for the depths. If you enjoy mining and collecting materials then I suppose its fine but the depths and sky felt like once you explored 20% of it you’ve seen whatever it has to offer. Given that the sky was such a big thing in all the promotional material it felt disappointing to see that it didn’t play that big of a role in the game. Most of the meat of the game is still on the surface.
Look, I know I sound like a hater when it comes to TotK but I actually enjoyed playing the game. I still enjoy it. I like talking to npcs and generally just fucking around in the game while taking in the scenery. I just feel like in this day and age when LoZ has the potential to improve in certain areas that people want to counter with “But LoZ is never about the story” and “Nintendo games rely on gimmicks”. The story is very weak in this game. I think it merits its criticisms because its weaknesses break the game’s immersion. It’s hard to watch people wonder about puppet Zelda when I know what’s happening and I’m somehow silent about it. And BotW’s success in its gimmicks come after a string of gimmicky LoZ games that were failures so it cannot rely on gimmicks for success either. And, to be fair, I think it’s insulting to the developers and writers to spout that LoZ doesn’t care about its story when there is one there clearly, even moreso than the people who acknowledge that the story is there and it has weaknesses.

Update time!
Hello lovelies! Sorry for the lackluster writing department lately. I promise no love has been lost for our beloved Links, I've just been a bit preoccupied these days. Actually, while we're at it... why don't I show you what I've been up to? ;3
Behold:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yeah. I hosted a TOTK pre-release party. And I went a little nuts with it. Can you blame me? This is a momentous point in time when a new big Zelda game that only drops twice every decade is finally coming out, OF COURSE your girl’s gonna be riding that hype train! 🎊 Tears of the Kingdom? More like tears of pure joy!! May 12, LET’S GOOO BABY!!! 💚🔺💚
So! Who’s all ready for Friday??!! 😍 “Let’s get hyped!!!!” I scream lovingly into your ear.
I will be going into hiding for a while come TOTK’s release (technically I already have lol), as it is essential that I avoid all spoilers of the game. As “TOTK” is written multiple times across this post, many of you probably won’t even see this, and that is honestly relatable and more power to you. BIG THANKS to all of you who’ve tagged your TOTK posts, I have sincerely appreciated it. 🙏 Be rest assured that I will be fan-squeeing behind the scenes for the entirety of this next month and beyond.
Friends, I’d love to know how YOU are all celebrating the quinquennial release of this new Zelda game!

Scp au brain drabble ftw
No idea if or where the others would fit into this yet
Vio's been in the facility since he was very small (maybe HE'S an SCP??) Very smart retains info like a sponge. Aptitude for biological anomalies and chemical make up DNA ECT. He could recite chemical formulas like a textbook.
Shadow is very very very old. From imprisoning war old (current era after totk kinda? Idk def high tech enough to run these sort of facilities) deals with it by being childish/impish. When alone with Vio shows his more mature side rarely. Usually a few hours deep into co research and development.
049 ish. Instead of a zombie virus he spreads malice by touch, can use shadows around him ECT. Is there willingly. Mutual benefits. He gets to live, has a mostly safe environment where he can't accidentally cause an apocalypse, and gets unrestricted access to whatever research regarding malice he wants or needs. (Test subjects of criminals on death row situation, not that that occurs very often)
Vio has been in contact with him since he started there but has always clicked with him. Shadow v fond of the little "hylian" (again, possibly an SCP idk yet). Flirts constantly. Sometimes in an ancient language Vio is obsessed with cracking (lorulian p much)
If Vio ever figures out what he's actually saying he would die of embarrassment. It's actually very cliche and romantic. Vio tends to get the gist of his tone though.
(side note flirting obviously starts at an appropriate age this shit takes place when he's like mid 20s to 30s)
Basic structure of plot would be Vio was escorting Shadow (who he gets in trouble for naming Shadow instead of his SCP number constantly) to some kind of lab? Testing chambers? And they're going over the sky walks when a breach occurs and shakes the whole ass building. Shadow (maybe doing smth stupid to show off? Balancing on the rails, handstand near the edge, whatever)
He falls and out of pure instinct Vio grabs him bare handed like touching his bare skin on his arms to haul him back up.
Shadow is freaking the fuck out because 1: just saved his life and 2: just touched him! Bare handed! No gloves!
And Vio's fine. Totally panicking right now but fine.
He's put into quarantine with Shadow for 2 weeks in his room to see if anything changes. Shadow touches him like hourly. Mans hasn't touched bare skin in decades. And never someone who stayed alive.
Cheek caress, face touch, checking his pulse, feeling his temp on the back of his neck and forehead. Literally any excuse to touch him. Obviously eventually a kiss too. (Maybe no cams allowed in his bed area?)
Idk if he would have an immunity to malice or is like an SCP type that malice would have no effect on?
That's all I have for now :3

So this is the project I’ve been helping my sister with for about a week.
After the Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom trailers release with large amounts of saxophone, my sister came up with a theory that the overall saxophone content of music in Nintendo games has increased over time. (In case you are confused about what I mean, here is the TotK trailer)
youtube
But what is the best game to analyze for this theory? Preferably one that has many different musical tracks, all easily accessible and with a fairly wide variety of styles over a wide period of time.
Something like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for the Nintendo Switch.
Tumblr media
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is great for this analysis because it contains 48 tracks released in 2014-2015, and currently has 32 DLC tracks released 2022-2023. It also contains a variety of tracks from the 7 previous Mario Kart games. This allows us to use that to compare saxophone levels over a wide time period while only having to play one game (my sister was doing this as a school presentation so we were on a limited timeline).
To compare saxophone in each course’s sound track, we played all 70 tracks and coded each course following the chart below.
Tumblr media
The main reason that “any horns” is a 2 is because there was a bit less saxophone than we anticipated, and also because neither of us are actually that good at identifying when a saxophone is or is not being played. Especially in an ensemble.
After spending a total of 5 hours playing through all 70 tracks, we had gathered all of our data and were able to determine our results.
Tumblr media
As you can see, there was a slight saxophone increase from the courses released on 2014-15 to the courses released 2022-23.
Tumblr media
As you can see, there is a slight positive linear trend if the cups are placed in release order. The brackets are around the cups released as part of DLC for the Switch version of the game, and with the exception of the Wave 3 courses (Rock cup and Moon cup) generally have higher saxophone ratings.
Tumblr media
Boomerang cup had the highest overall saxophone rating. This is not entirely surprising, as all of the courses in this cup were originally remastered or made solely for Nintendo’s Mario Kart Tour mobile app. This means that both Bangkok Rush and Singapore Speedway had music written around the late 2010s or early 2020s. Additionally, the Mario Circuit in this cup was based of the DS version. As the DS had less complex audio options, when Nintendo adapted this track for Tour, they likely took some (saxophone heavy) liberties with the music. This makes this cup not surprising to have the highest saxophone rating.
Tumblr media
Relatedly, you can see here the average saxophone breakdown by release game. Tour tracks have one of the highest average saxophone ratings. But while the two other highest categories, GameBoy Advance and GameCube courses are distributed throughout all 70 tracks, the Tour courses are confined solely to the recent DLC courses. This is most likely one of the main things that contributed to the higher saxophone rating for the DLC courses.
In conclusion: the amount of saxophone in Mario Kart track soundtracks has increased over the last 10 years. This may suggest a further upward trend in the amount of saxophone for other Nintendo franchises.

The zelda lore theorists are in shambles and im here to correct their shortcomings, in this essay of a tumblr post i will attempt my best to correct some large problems i have seen within zelda lore as of late.
“Where did all the shekiah tech go from botw?” It went back underground as we clearly see most of it rise from the ground in botw, and for the guardians they were used for the new towers, as for the divine beasts they were most likely buried once more, weve seen that they were originally buried prior to the age of the botw champions (the time 100 years prior to botw) so they were most likely just reburied for convenience.
“But there were too many guardians for how few new towers there are?” are you expecting hyrule to understand this massively advanced tech on their first try? Hell even some of the quests for the new towers involve them being buggy, meaning they still havent perfected their understanding of ancient shekiah tech
“Why is hyrule been founded again? Did nintendo reset the timeline?” No you idiot, hyrule has been founded again multiple times before now, we just havent seen it actually happen in game or in cutscenes, why do you think zelda games have wildly differing landscapes?
As for the zonai being introduced, they were probably there the entire time. Think about how in the start of totk zelda says that the murals say that her ancestors partnered with gods to create the kingdom of hyrule, this makes me think that the three golden goddesses from earlier zelda lore were probably zonai.
So, in botw and totk, the three dragons that we technically dont know the identities of are named naydra, dinrall, and farosh. The three golden goddesses are named nayru, din, and farore. If we consider that they were most likely zonai they most likely had access to secret stones, of which allowed them to be viewed as gods and eventually become the three immortal dragons we farm for parts in botw and totk.
Now, for the differences between malice and gloom as well as calamity ganon and ganondorf, this is a smaller misconception that ive seen that i still wish to correct anyway. Gloom is not malice but malice is gloom, if that makes sense. Basically gloom was first created by ganondorf when he acquired the secret stone, however gloom became malice after ganondorf was sealed away and he developed so much hatred that it leaked out in the form of malice and calamity ganon, attempting to destroy hyrule castle as on a stone tablet we can find in game, it is stated that the castle was made so that ganondorf would not be disturbed while sealed. However after the great calamity from botw the castle was left in shambles and ganondorf’s seal was disturbed heavily, but not enough for him to escape, however after calamity ganon is destroyed and all the malice disappeared, time passed where the castle was just kinda left to rot, its not known exactly how long has passed between botw and totk, but seemingly enough for the seal on ganondorf to effectively become useless and allow him to start spreading his gloom more. Basically, gloom is directly and intentionally made by ganondorf, but malice is just because he was literally too angry to die.
If i find any other problems with current zelda lore i will add onto this post, but for now this is all my adhd riddled brain has to say.

pokemon rant ahead bc im a born hater what can i say <3
playing scarlet and i just caught chien pao which i wanted on my team before id started playing and was just picking which pokemon i like best. the fucking?? running animation?? is fucked up?? there SEEMS to be a walking animation like it exists and i get a glimpse of it every now and then but it seems like it refuses to use anything but the running animation. so you cant reasonably walk beside the pokemon because its animation is freaking the fuck out, angles get fucky, the thing runs ahead of you, just bad. it's just i really wish that the follow mechanic wasn't dogshit, i want to stroll around with my pokemon not lagging behind. how come every other game can figure out a follow mechanic. how come modders can figure it out (there's maybe a chance the pokemon is stuck running because i caught it at a higher level than my current badges give me control over but idk if that's how the game works)
and another thing i noticed (that everyone else probably noticed bc this game has been out for a while lmfao but-) the entire world feels like it was MADE for exploration on koraidon. if we compare it to botw/totk, the terrain in those games doesnt feel like they were made for horseback exploration. there are so many huge wide expanses in scarlet that, the moment you get off your ride, you feel small and out of place. like there's absolutely no incentive to walk around on your own because everything is too far away to comfortably explore on your own (and also there's hardly anything TO explore. everywhere is empty and boring and repeating). botw does not suffer from this at all, all the environments feel realistic in scale. and i wish if the game were more focused on the horseback (pokemonback?) exploration that there was more fidelity to koraidon's animations and mechanics. I believe it's called procedural animation, the ability for a model to react to the environment it's in (ei, when link is on a slope, his leg will bend and his foot will rest realistically on an incline, same goes for horses in botw when theyre on inclines. these are calculations the game makes in the moment of execution, not rendered out during development accounting for every possible position a player could be on a slope). i feel like this should happen with koraidon at the least, if you're going to be on it for the majority of the game.
and don't get me STARTED on how absolutely stupid it is for so many pokemon to be as small as they are. constantly tripping on a 2 centimeter tall pokemon that i didn't see and initiating a battle gets really fucking old. from purely a game design standpoint, for one of the first games in the series to feature pokemon walking around in the overworld, youd THINK they'd somehow incorporate more accessibility for being able to SEE these fucking things, but no. the camera is far from the player (i play with the camera as close as possible, i know it's adjustable) and the grass that's fucking everywhere is taller than a lot of pokemon. also the shiny issue. how the pokemon from this gen have a lot of MINUTE differences in their shiny palette that make shiny hunting more of an eye-strain simulator than anything.
and i know that there are a lot of pokemon in these games meaning a lot of assets meaning a lot of space thats dedicated just to make creatures appear. i know all of that takes away from the space needed to make animations or appealing scenery or really just a substantial game. but remember when they said theyd limit the pokedex so that they could make sure the pokemon they DO include have higher quality models and animations? and remember how they never actually did any of that. (changing the rendering engine and the textures is NOT higher quality anything. and if you think it is, how come the textures on hills FUCKING SHIFT AS YOU WALK PAST THEM? THATS A LOWER QUALITY ENGINE!!! THAN WHATEVER THEY USED BEFORE!!!)
i'm just saying that i really wouldnt mind if they HUGELY limited the pokedex IF IT MEANT that we could get cutscenes with unique animations and effects. get rid of a few hundred pokemon if it means the overworld is decorated with more than a dozen repeating assets that make it difficult to tell where the hell i am without looking at the map. maybe i want to see big wind turbines in the background move at more than 2 frames per second! why is the largest landmark in the area moving at 2 frames per second?! bad!!! ugh.
i think all the issues i have with this game are reasonable grievances for a game that costs 60 fucking dollars. i dont want to hear a single "it's just a kids game!" it was 60 fucking dollars. +dlc +online subscription
theres lots more i can say but this is just what's really bothering me right now hahasdfk

do you want to ramble about botw and totk?
this got long
YESSSSSS OK SO. botw zelda. I'm starting this off with a real attention grabber for you she's strangers coded to me. anyway. plotline of botw. the last time this hyrule has had a ganon encounter was 10k years ago. hyrule's whole thing is that the legend of the knight and the princess and the evil is a legend that has been passed down for generations, (sidenote I kind of hold the fun little headcanon that each zelda game is its own version of the same folktale, as opposed to being part of a real linear history, because frankly I know the devs don't actually care about the canonical timeline and I think some fans care too much. timeline is still fun though) so as you can imagine, 10k years, the current hyrule of botw is VERY divorced from its history, that's a pretty large part of botw in general, reconciling with the past. anyway the sheer lack of knowledge about the legend and the goddess power and anything related to it is making things very difficult for zelda. they have reason to believe that they're gonna have another ganon encounter soon, they've uncovered all these ancient robots and mechas that were used in the last battle, they're assembling a team of pilots for the mechas, they've gotten the current wielder of the master sword to protect the princess (link and zelda are like. 16/17 for the duration of the plot but link got the master sword at like 12. fucked up) and zelda is being expected to access her divine power, she can't. she doesn't know how, and her mother died when she was 6 (she didn't cry at the funeral. fucked) so she can't go to her for guidance, and her father is having her go to, and has been having her do this for years now, to sacred spring after sacred spring to pray in the hopes of accessing it. so she's dealing with a lot of pressure, and she just wants to work on the robots she is such a scientific mind its the cutest, zelink infodumping scenes my beloved, but she's also really focused on the ancient tech cause it's the only way she can think of to help, and her dad just gets more mad (her dad is such a shitbag. at some point he tells her she's the heir to a throne of nothing but failure. asswipe) about it cause he thinks she's not focusing enough on getting her powers so she feels powerless she feels like a failure and when link gets assigned to protect her it causes a lot of initial dislike for him because, to her, he's this embodiment of destined perfection she can't reach. he has the master sword he's their most skilled and youngest swordsman she's just a failure she's convinced he must hate her. he must think she's useless. and link won't communicate with her (this is the first zelda game with voiced lines and so therefore the first one where they give a canonical reason he doesn't say anything in cutscenes. it's because of the endless amount of pressure he's under, he feels like he has to be the perfect stoic swordsman. I could kill myself) so it's not really helping. eventually he saves her life from some yiga clan grunts and the yiga clan are basically evil ninjas and they grow to be friends, she confides in him in cutscenes, she has a diary you can find that implies he confided in her off screen, fun stuff, but she's not any closer to getting her power. then, on her 17th birthday, she goes up to the spring of wisdom to pray, (yes there are two others they are the springs of power and courage) because that's the hyrulean age of majority and adults are the only ones allowed to go up the mountain to the spring, and she has a feeling it's the last time. it will work, or it won't. they come down the mountain to where the champions are waiting (the champions are the aforementioned mecha pilots and I haven't really talked about them but they're all really good characters I love them also totk has a second gen of champions basically that are called the sages and I like the sages but I still prefer the champions I found out at some point not everyone feels the same way which. I genuinely don't get. but I'm gonna shut up about that now) and it hasn't worked. zelda doesn't have her power.
they're in the middle of comforting her, they get cut off by this horrible earthquake, they look towards the castle, and there’s this swirling mass over the castle, ganon is attacking. the champions rush to their mechas, and link and zelda run. the number one priority is to keep zelda alive. they head for hateno fort. (yes as in hateno the town with the house in totk. you can buy the house in botw and there’s a theory it was link's childhood home) they possibly went to the castle first and found out exactly what happened though, because on the way to hateno, zelda has a breakdown, screaming and crying about how everyone is dead and its all her fault, and they ARE dead. everyone at the castle is definitely dead, but ganon also managed to posses every single one of the hundreds of robots they had, AND had put evil blights in the mechas to ambush the champions, and the robots are wreaking havoc and the champions die in a losing battle in what was supposed to be their weapons of war. zelda and link make it to the field outside hateno, but there’s still robots everywhere, and link is on his last legs protecting zelda. he's about to get shot, and then she pushes him out of the way and finally has her divine power, she shuts down all the robots, and then turns to where link has collapsed. he dies in her arms. he gets taken to this shrine of resurrection to be healed until he can fight again, and zelda heads to the castle to hold ganon off until link is ready. she waits for 100 years.
100 years goes by, link wakes up an amnesiac, has to be given the gist of it, and then you wander around hyrule finding out all that ^ through various recovered memories (there’s a similar game mechanic in totk but it doesn't work as well imo bc in botw you can discover them at random and nothing bad happens, you already know how this story ends, whereas in totk it DOES spoil shit) you have to go free each of the mechas from the evil blights (which btw have similar weapons and fighting styles as the champions but otherwise bear no similarities and I just think it would've been fucked if they looked like the possessed bodies of the champions idk) and then you gotta go save zelda from the castle. you and her end ganon, it's an emotional meeting, the ghosts you were haunted by fade, and then the two of them leave, presumably to rebuild hyrule. so basically botw is about reconciling with the past, looking to it for guidance and forgiving yourself for the failures but moving on in spite of it, and I'm fucking normal
and then totk. so. link and zelda are investigating ruins under the castle cause weird shit has been happening lately, gross magic pouring out and making people sick. and then they get really deep, and find the decimated corpse of ganon, the man, being held by a magical hand. the magic is coming from him. ganon wakes up when they get in there, goes to attack them with the magic, link gets his arm fucked up and also the master sword this will be relevant later, and zelda falls down into this pit, link jumps after her, but he's saved by the aforementioned magic hand, he loses zelda. they're reaching for each other. also totk takes place like 6ish years after botw that's his common law wife of 6 years. and they lost each other once already for 100 years. oh god I'm so upset. anyway then the whole plot, is trying to find zelda. you wake up on some sky islands there are sky islands, your arm is now replaced with the magic arm, and the broken master sword has to be put in this mysterious glowing golden light. you go around you get help from your friends, who get dubbed the sages, and you discover, through a game mechanism similar to the lost memories botw quest, that zelda fell back in time. zelda has light powers as a general thing that's usually her power, in some games she also has prophetic visions, and in totk, you find out she also has time powers in her ancestry, and she accidentally sent herself back in time. at least 10k years most likely more. and she's hanging out with her ancestors, the first king and queen of hyrule. (timeline wise they are not actually the first king and queen of hyrule but whatever) the king is an anthropomorphic llama?? from the sky islands. zelda franchise tends to have furry species btw. anyway ganondorf is a threat back then too and zelda has to help the king and queen come up with a plan to defeat him it's a really fun journey she gets a lot of healing to that self esteem that her dad fucked up BUT ANYWAY. they realize they won't be able to permanently get rid of ganon and zelda has unbelievable amounts of faith in link and says that if they can contain ganon for now you can take care of it in the future, the king ends up having to sacrifice himself, and his arm, to keep ganon contained. and zelda still has no way back home to her time. then she sees this glowing golden light, and whoo! there's the master sword! it's still fucked up though. the only way to fix the sword is through bathing it in sacred power, and it's REALLY damaged, and zelda STILL HAS NO WAY HOME. so she turns herself into a dragon. there's these special stones that amplify magical power, she has one, and swallowing it turns you into an immortal dragon, at the cost of losing yourself. she holds the sword to herself, and it's going to bathe in her sacred power for 10k years or more. at the point you find out about this it's so fucked up cause you come out of the cutscene and you're surrounded by silent princess flowers and oh my god I haven't even explained the silent princess symbolism to you oh my god that's a whole other thing, anyway and dragon zelda is flying above you and at this point you've seen her around the map several other times and there were 3 other dragons in botw so you were kinda confused where this one came from but it was cool and it's just. ugh it's so fucked up. I kinda guessed the possibility early I just didn't want to acknowledge it. anyway then you get the sword from dragon zelda and it is stuck in her forehead poor baby and the sword claim scene is GORGEOUS and to the best of your knowledge and link's knowledge zelda is gone forever, and she did this for you. IT'S SO FUCKEDDDD and then when you get to fighting ganon he eventually turns himself into a dragon and dragon zelda comes to help you battle it out with dragon ganon and when you finally kill him the spirits? of zelda's ancestors show up, I think via the magical hand, and the one with time powers reverse both link's arm damage and zelda's draconification, and then you're both falling, and he has to catch her.
and it mirrors the last time she fell, when he lost her, and this time he catches her, and he hugs her to him, and they fall into a pond, and he carries her out and she wakes up and looks at him and says that she was in a deep sleep and woke up when she felt a warm loving embrace and "oh link! I'm home" and AUGHHHHHHGH SHE HAD SO MUCH FAITH IN HIM THEY'RE SO IN LOVE I'M GONNA THROW UP.
anyway so totk continues botw's themes of contending with the past and moving past old failures and making things right, but it also is really good as a sequel to botw in that botw is a very lonesome journey, and everything about totk emphasizes that you are no longer alone. you have friends to help you, it's no longer you alone in world you don't recognize that doesn't remember you, it's you having help. you don’t need to do it alone anymore. and it's just. UGHHHH. I like botw better than totk I think totk's story feels a bit lacking at times? but I think overall it works really well as a sequel in continuing and working with the themes that botw has

I'm not sure if you've answered this before but I was wondering what your favorite loz games are!
my favorite 2d is minish cap and my favorite 3d is tears of the kingdom, but I have a soft spot for botw since it was the first one I played!
– skies <3
Hello Skies! :)
I don’t think I have either?? So far I’ve only played a very small handful (I only just started playing them in the last two years) and have watched play throughs of the rest. I really like how each game brings a different vibe while still holding true to its base.
Same as you, BOTW was my first LOZ game and thus I’ve gotta soft spot for it. It’s also the first game I’ve played where I realized I’m a supplies hoarder in video games. I’ve very much enjoyed TOTK, but Breath of the Wild was my first game in that genre and in LoZ. It checks all the boxes for favored game tropes and I’ve got a lot of dumb videos of my antics in it lol.
Ocarina of Time is the one I’m currently playing and it’s definitely top three of my played games. I’ve had a lot of fun so far and I’ve got fun memories already of proving how much of a Not Gamer I am to my bestie (who ironically didn’t believe me?? Until I couldn’t do something that’s supposedly easy. Controls are different but fun times lol). Its story is one that intrigues me a lot.
Those are my favorites of the ones I’ve physically played myself though. Subject to change as I get my hands on more of them or have the time to play the others I can access.

Linked Universe Long Stories
Authenticity: (24/?) Wild POV, Autistic Wild because I'm autistic and he's my comfort character
Summary: Wild knew he was… odd. He experienced the world differently than everyone else. No one seemed to feel as deeply as he did, about the things he did. Sometimes he would interact with people and it would just feel… off. It was as if everyone else had a rulebook on how to be a person but Wild was left watching and guessing.
And the thing is, Wild knew his friends knew it too. But these new friends, they were different. They didn’t treat him like he was different, or broken, or a burden. They just took him in stride. Wild didn’t know how to put into words how much that meant to him.
In which Wild is autistic because I’m autistic and I want him to be.
Gratitude: (3/9) Sky fluff!
Summary: 8 times Sky receives a gratitude crystal from the chain + 1 time he gives some away.
In Defense of Honor: (4/9) Badass Sky appreciation, Sky-centric with individual chapters for the others
Summary: 8 times Sky defends another member of the chain + 1 time they all defend him.
Only the Wild Ones (are the ones you can never catch): (5/5) Wild & Twilight centric Wild meets the chain
Summary: At 6, Link visits Castle Town for the first time and meets some strange men in the woods. At 12, Link pulls the Master Sword and sees his imaginary friends again. At 14, Link is appointed as the Princess’s personal guard and is grateful to have old friends on his side. At 16, the Calamity strikes, and Link has never felt more alone. At 16, Link dies.
At 117, Link defeats evil incarnate and saves Hyrule. At 117, Link meets eight peculiar heroes for the first time. Or, at least, what he believes is the first time.
Twilight thinks the Goddess Hylia has a cruel sense of humor and needs to leave his cub alone.
Favorite LU Oneshots
Sentiment: Warriors and Time have a disagreement. AKA two traumatized heroes don’t know how to handle emotions and then they try to have a healthy conversation about it
Delirium: Sky’s whittling slowed, hands lowering into his lap. His gaze was locked on Wild, as it had been for most of the afternoon. Wild wouldn’t stop twitching. Sky couldn’t figure out why. Based on kikker-oma’s art.
Welcome Home: The chain arrives at Lon Lon Ranch, and Malon’s words trigger a memory.
Bouquet: Wind, Wild, and Hyrule are planning a prank. They're quite obvious about it, but Time lets it happen anyway.
Find all my oneshots for LU on my AO3 here!

Master Hand in-game probably knew that if he didn’t depower Ganondorf, he’d do the exact same shit he does in Hyrule but with more access to technology.
Like we all know Ganon was a last minute inclusion in melee which is why he’s the way he is, but in-canon Master Hand 100% didn’t want to be on the receiving end of Ganondorf’s bullshit.
I might go off a tangent here but I find it interesting how Ganondorf continues to be a story of the underdog that continues to cement his place in this series that wasn't even intending to have him be such a mainstay character. There was an interview (or several, I am not sure) where it was revealed that the original intent was to have Link, Zelda, and Impa be the recurring characters since Link is the "link" that brings everything together, Zelda is the princess that stands at the helm of the kingdom, and Impa is the one who imparts the legends. There had been no expectation for Ganon other than to have him be an end goal, an evil that the hero must defeat. There seemed to be surprise at how much people wanted to see Ganondorf reappear again, and Nintendo has been using Ganondorf as a way to attract players to their games since. The most popular example of this is his inclusion in Twilight Princess where he was added as a way to attract players who had nostalgia for Ocarina of Time at a time when the LoZ franchise was in a lot of trouble. I find it incredibly fascinating that Sakurai looked at Ganondorf and said "Hmm, this guy has the same build as Captain Falcon so let's make him a clone of him" at the last minute that honestly cursed Ganondorf to be such an underwhelming character. If his moveset had been built to be unique then perhaps we would be singing a different tune. (I am so insanely curious with what they will do if they use TotK Ganondorf for the next smash, that man's entire personality is wielding different weapons). In any case, we all know that Ganondorf players are an incredibly dedicated group in the smash community. He has so much love hahahaha. Ganondorf just be stumbling into games for various reasons and people just kept gobbling that shit up. ANYWAYS, I am just amazed that Ganondorf went from this character that Nintendo had not intended on being a mainstay of the series to being iconic and a villain everyone loves to see in his current iteration in Tears of the Kingdom. It's kind of like his real life story emulates his story in Hyrule, a man born to a people and position that is underprivileged that fights his way to the top to claim power and tell the world that he is the true king.

Hino analysis time
Aka why i think its strange that Hino is handled the way he is in both games (in a good way)
This ended up being a long post sorry. Tldr, hino is a unique case for how npcs were handled between botw and totk and seems to have the potential to play a larger role just in general but never does.
So i've been thinking a lot about hino (as i do) and noticed that while some npcs that arent involved with anything seem to have changed significantly between botw and totk, for example, spinch and joute, others are mostly the same, such as hino and mezer. Other npcs that stayed almost completely the same are usually ones that were involved in some sort of quest, such as magda with the flowers and loone with her love of ancient things.
Spinch is a traveling npc in botw whos defining trait is that his horse is also named spinch, however his horse is nowhere to be seen in totk (though im not sure if this is just a case of npcs horses not being predetermined) and is also not mentioned by him as he now only stays at the lakeside stable. Joute is another traveling npc in botw who says he prefers horses (or "horsies", as he says it) over people, and seems to be pretty reclusive overall, but in totk hes part of the group of people who get sick from food poisoning and doesnt mention any sort of preference towards horses, and his horse is also not seen.
Magda is still obsessed with flowers and can still supposedly hear them speak, but she doesnt attack you anymore (as far as im aware) and is involved with one of the zelda sighting side quests. Loone is still obsessed with ancient stuff but is focused now on the three leviathan skeletons, which is its own set of side quests. Mezer is another npc like this where he used to sell meat but now he does not sell meat and instead just travels, but still does have his focus on meat, and is also involved with a quest about marbled rock roast.
Hino has been studying the blood moon in both games, though in totk his focus is currently on how monsters function, hoping that something about monsters will tell him anything about why they get revived by the blood moon. His character is mostly the same, but his obsession with the moon in general seems to have grown since botw.
For example:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The first two pictures are from totk. The third picture is from botw. In totk, hino refers to the moon as "she" and "her", unless its a blood moon in which he only uses "it", while in botw he only uses "it". He also tends to focus more on the moons beauty now than he did before, with two of his moon phase comments in botw not really having much to do with the moon itself or how he personally feels about it (specifically, his full moon and cresecnt moon dialogue). But overall, his character hasnt changed too much, as his main traits are still very much focused on. With this in mind, it would make sense that he would be significant in some way, or at least directly involved in a quest, like how magda and mezer are, but he isnt.
Once you finish the zora's domain regional phenomenon quest, you can get a side quest from a zora guard named gaddison, who tells you about a monster fort on ja'abu ridge. The quest is just to clear out the fort, but she doesnt mention that there may be a hylian trapped in the fort. Despite this, nothing about the quest is focused on that fact, and the hylian does, in fact, turn out to be hino.
However, hino is also in 4 other forts in the game (there are a total of 6, but hino never goes to the one in hebra, which is also the fort that you can aid the monster control crew with), none of which are ever given any attention to the way this one side quest did. To me this is interesting because these other forts are a lot easier to access than the one in ja'abu ridge, one of the forts is not too far from lookout landing. And, if you save hino from all 5 forts before the next blood moon, he gives you a diamond as a reward (only for the first time you do it). It seems strange to be rewarded like that for something that is not a side quest or side adventure, never really given attention to, and completely optional and easy to miss. Nothing bad happens if you never save hino. He doesnt end up in the forts in any particular order. Its something most players would never find out about.
Hino can also be mentioned by the npcs who read the newspapers, bringing up how there is someone who researches the blood moon who seemed excited to check out a monster fort but that they seem like they wouldnt be able to defend themself. That is the only way you'd find out that someone is captured in a fort if you didnt get gaddisons quest (and assumed hino wouldnt just go to andifferent fort afterwards) or if you didnt just happen to come across hino yourself. From what i remember, this is the only case of an npc mentioning another npc like that, especially one that isnt involved in a questline at all.
So then, why have any focus on hino if he isnt really important to anything? In botw hes even less involed with anything going on, staying at the dueling peaks stable, but hes also the only npc that'll explain the blood moon to you, as hes the only npc who is researching it, or even cares about it at all. My assumption is that he would probably be useful for that one shrine quest that you have to wait for a blood moon to happen, and also to plan ahead to make meals with better bonuses (since the blood moon does that for some reason), but nothing more. Nobody else at the stable mentions him, no other npc mentions him, nobody talks about anyone researching the blood moon. The closest thing we have is that when sagessa is at the stable, she'll sometimes point out that most people that stay there are twins. Hino is the only one who stays at the stable constantly who doesnt have a twin. In totk, more npcs will talk about the blood moon (symin reveals how the blood moon gives you bonuses when cooking which is how i found out about that, and the captains will talk about how the blood moon revives monsters) and yet hino is nowhere to be seen (because he went and got himself captured). Now you cant really use him to determine when a blood moon is happening because he disappears after you save him, and once you save him from all 5 places he shows up in, he disappears entirely until the blood moon happens and the forts are refreshed. You can only tell if you happen to save him on a day that a blood moon will happen. Considering there are no quests where the blood moon is necessary, there probably wasnt a reason to keep hino around for the same purpose, though he does still talk about the moon phases every day like he used to.
Now, the main thing about hino that is interesting that is also fairly easy to miss in both games is that, not only is he the only one who is researching the blood moon, he is also the only npc in the ENTIRETY of both games that is affected by the blood moon. Its a little bit different in both games and ive already made posts about everything that happens to him, but basically he goes crazy and his text turns red, something that doesnt happen with anyone else in either game. It seems to be a full on physical reaction, not just him getting overly excited or agitated, but rather something that is indeed paramormal, and yet somehow partly disconnected from malice and gloom. And this is NEVER acknowledged in either game. By anyone, not even him. He'll at most say that the blood moon makes him "feel alive", but the way that he acts is a lot more... intense than just that, and to never acknowledge it fully seems to imply, to me at least, that he isnt actually fully aware of what happens to him.
But why focus on that part of him and then never do anything else with it? Why make him the only one like that? Why make him the only one who gets captured? Why make him seem like he should play a bigger part?
I dont know! And thats the frustrating part. Everything about him in totk wouldve worked as a side adventure, and yet. Nothing. It even wouldve made sense to have him in lookout landing just because he can tell when a blood moon will happen and im sure that would be very helpful for the monster control crew to be able to prep in advance. He just seems like he would have some part to play in something, but he doesnt. You just rescue him over and over again (something he himself points out) and you just get rewards over and over again without end, similar to addison who gives you similar sets of rewards every time you help him but has a point where there is nothing else to help him with. Its just so odd that thats just the way it is with him.
Even we know so little about the blood moon. Its implied that its a seperate thing from the whole demon king thing that happened, so we just have no idea why it happens and why it functions the way it does other than a great evil power can harness the blood moon to their advantage, like ganondorf did. And for some reason, not a single person in the history of hyrule for whatever amount of time that botw and totk takes place in has ever cared enough to figure anything out about it except hino, and because of that he has absolutely nothing to work with except his own observations and so nothing he tells us about the blood moon is anything we dont already know. I guess it doesnt really help that he doesnt seem to talk to people all that much, considering nobodys ever cared to help him with it either or try to find where he is. He just feels like more than just some guy with a hobby, like he can offer more to us if he was just allowed to. But hes just a really weird npc that seems otherwise normal... and hes my most favorite character in both games because of it.

[totk] thyplo in greater context
ok basically what the title says. thyplo (did i even spell that right) and the ruins of faron in relation to everything else.
[exploring thyplo ruins side adventure spoiler and some main quest]
ok sorry for no pics this time but they're hopefully not needed. once u finish the quest the dude tells u that these monoliths were left by hylians to honor the sages which ok whatever if we didn't know anything else about the zonai. We now know that the hylians knew about the sages and were able to construct thingies that would react to their abilities. Ig these monoliths were placed there in post zonai times or at least after mineru was gone... but even then that raises the question of why the zonai ruins of the surface look so different to those elsewhere. In the last game there was a shroud over the area but idk maybe that was because link didnt need to know about all this during the calamity era so that is probably why the sheikha monks did this which isn't the first time that the monks did so because of thundra plateau and the shrines in the labyrinths. I've heard theories that the zonai were the ancestors of the sheikha and tbh that's really becoming feasible now, like rauru had white hair and so did the sheika monks. I wonder if the ruins on the surface were in fact made by the sheikha in order to like guide link when he needed (like the long necked dragons) in addition to the things left in the sky by mineru. I mean there's even zonai ruins right under kakariko village, somewhere u really wouldn't expect them to be. the surface ruins also have owl, dragon, and boar statues (seen in this reddit post) though the boar statues are not mentioned at all in totk from what I've seen. I guess the owl means wisdom/mineru and the dragon is rauru, and the boar is idk ganondorf wouldnt make sense but thats not important rn (not in this post). The only 2 dragon heads I saw in the depths were in the central mine and tbh those could have been added later since we know the sheika had access to the depths bc biridia tower is in one of those pits. Also, the statues in the depths have a much different style in comparison to those of the dragons, they're almost like made of rock solid poes which may represent the spirals on the big statues on the surface. And then we know that the upstairs temple of time was built on the surface and none of that looks remotely like the current ruins we see. The one thing though is the labyrinths those are all in the surface ruins style which really doesn't make any sense but its not super far fetched the sheika built them seeing that they had floating tech as well (vah medoh) and the labryniths of the depths are all built around lightroots. i think thats all i got for now and sorry for any uncaught spelling errors... i think i will make a second post on this soon brb
