Finally watched Glass onion.
I slept on it to determine how I really feel about it.
Let’s start with definitives.
The acting is solid. Full marks on all the actors. Great performances and the locations were great. I did especially enjoy the bit with the masks.
I loved all the little references.
Now that is out of the way.
Glass Onion is the Anti-Knives Out movie.
While the first movie was filled with Strategic moves and left the viewer Guessing till the end. Glass onion is obvious on who the killer will be almost immediately.
It’s obvious because you know who the movie is targeting ridicule at. But even if one didn’t know, it was obvious after meeting said character.
The movie tries to mock Psuedo-intellectualism right down to its very name “Glass Onion”
Looks complex but you can see what’s at the center.
The problem I have with this movie is that it is exactly what it’s trying to make fun of. It’s a faux intellectual Film about how the people are faux intellectuals.
Now if the movie kept that bit a secret, and unveiled it slowly throughout the film, That would have been great. But the movie states it so brazen and bold that it almost comes off as mocking to the fans of the first Knives out that were expecting a genuine mystery with twists and turns.
Now perhaps I’m too hard on this film. It did entertain, but it was like a Game of Among Us. There was an obvious imposters. Everyone is a bit sus and people were venting all the time.
Overall the movie was entertaining but

something im starting this year is a very self-indulgent, "my year in review" thing where i list 7 video games i enjoyed this year + 7 movies from this year that i liked because as time goes on i feel like i'm getting worse and worse at determining what i did and when i did them so this is basically just a place for me to journal the things i enjoyed this year for future reference.
all the movies are 2022 releases but since i'm hardly ever on top of current video game releases. my games list is gonna be all over the place. im mixing them up. feel free to read if you want yippee it's meant for me but since its being posted publicly ill write em all up as little recommendations. going in no particular order other than alphabetical and alternating between a movie and a video game i liked this year. also why 7 of each ? because 7 is my favorite number fuck you
The Batman
-hmmm. thoughts. congratulations to our second gay batman, robert pattinson. ok this is only half a joke. i love the riddler being a twitch streamer terrorist i like when media modernizes older characters it's funny. gotham truly felt like a shithole in this movie. soundtrack fucked. can't fight city halloween was on my spotify 100 wrapped
Tumblr media
Inscryption (2021)
-i fucking suck at this game, i still have not beaten the trapper and as i understand theres like 2 whole other parts of the game to go or something??? so no i have not beaten it yet. but i have also sunk an unholy amount of time TRYING to beat it and i didn't get sick of it. it's a very dark but very entertaining card game and it has a free demo. even if you don't like card builder games i think you should try. it has a very unique atmosphere and premise
Tumblr media
Bullet Train
-yes i liked the cringe brad pitt action movie. fun fact this was actually specifically tailor-made for me in a factory! it has a large cast of assholes trying to kill each other and it's funny and wacky and i love the directing. that sounds so fucking nerdy to say but i want to be a film director so im gonna say it. the directing of the action sequences especially was really impressive to me because there's only so much space/movement your camera can (believably) achieve when filming in a small, rectangular, ever-moving box like a train and i think mr david leitch did it very well. also tangerine and lemon funniest characters in an action comedy ever
Tumblr media
Milk Inside a Bag of Milk Inside a Bag of Milk (2020)
-i kind of don't want to say much about this on the off chance someone reads this and also decides to play a game on this list but. listen. play it. it's like a dollar. it's very short, it's about a girl dealing with mental illness, and that's all i'll say about it.
Glass Onion
-mr benoit blanc u are so fruity. but ohg this was fun. it was fun! and it was especially more fun to rewatch it and see all that i missed and the small moments that they weren't really trying to hide from you. i enjoy the concept of being gaslit by a movie. also janelle monae is always so fun to see act
Tumblr media
Paradise Killer (2020)
-honestly, there is so much i hate about this game. the sprites are awkward. the voice acting is bad. the platforming is abysmal. yet it's still here because i think its world is genuinely insane and unique and it knows the exact type of vibe its going for with all these terrible people in a vaporwave reality and it achieves it and also its a murder mystery and i like those. give it a try
Tumblr media
Everything, Everywhere, All At Once
-yeah we all know her pussy slaps. there really isn't anything new for me to add. it's funny. it's got good action. michelle yeoh best actress award NOW!!!!!
Tumblr media
Pathologic Classic HD (2015)
-yea this one is kinda cheating. i started it last year and got like 2 hours into it and gave up and then did a bunch of other things but i finally figured out how to get my controller hooked up to my laptop this year and i played it. 100%'d it. its proudly displayed on my steam profile.
Tumblr media
look at that. awful. horrible terrible plague walking simulator 0/10 am playing again
Tumblr media
Nope
-i love jordan peele. i love keke palmer. i love daniel kaluuya. this movie was made FOR MEEEEEEE it was very slow and tense and i know a lot of people complained about the slow pace of it but the build-up made (SPOILER) reveal all the more terrifying. speaking of terrifying, the scene where everyone (SPOILER) is the scariest thing ive seen in years and i think i have claustrophobia now :) also akira homage <3
Tumblr media
A Short Hike (2019)
-this one was soso cute and relaxing :) it was very funny and had a cute artstyle and i beat it in like 1 hour. not a very big commitment but its charming enough to want to come back to
Puss In Boots: The Last Wish
-ummm. so. puss in boots??? that shit slapped????????? it had NO reason to be that good. like obviously the animation has been spiderverse'd which SLAPS but the they put their whole puss(y) into this movie and they didn't have to. it's good. all the characters were SO fun, literally all of them. i love the stupid little dog. he is my scrimblo. go check it out if you haven't it is NOT the soulless cash grab i thought it would be
Tumblr media
Slime Rancher (2017)
-so like, conceptually, this game is weird as fuck. a first person shooter where you suck up little jellies and feed them and harvest their poop. its insane. its also very relaxing but also very ...management-y, like the way stardew valley is where its technically very relaxing but you are doing SO much to maximize ur profit for the day. i love that shit. look at those things. theyre adorable
Tumblr media
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
-ohg. knumckles
Tumblr media
SOMA (2015)
-ok so i don't actually get scared that often BUT here is a mike secret. ocean shit SCARES me i do not like anything set under the ocean and the fact that this game takes place underwater freaks me the fuck out. i dropped my 3 hour save file to switch to little baby for bitches mode after 3 hours not because the monsters themselves are scary but because emotionally i cannot handle monsters on top of a deep sea setting. also the story was really good you should play it

Like many, many people did I watched Glass Onion over the Holiday Weekend. Not a very Christmasy movie but a fun little romp to watch with family as things wound down Christmas Day. I liked it. My final judgment would probably be that it's not quite as good as the first but it is still really good and I wish we had more movies like this. In that I mean movies made for adults. Don't have to be high brow or anything but it isn't middle brow either, it's just entertaining and meant to be for adults to enjoy. Anyway, watching it I saw Madelyn Cline and it was like, "Ah ha, so that's who she is!" She has been coming up on my dash for months and I often find myself thinking she is gorgeous but... I had no clue who she was an a quick google pointed me to some shows on Netflix that I have never watched. So I sorta shrugged and didn't think about it too much. But here she was on screen and you know what? She is gorgeous. I win, I got that right when I first saw her and have confirmed it. I really am just exceptionally smart. Today I want to fuck Madelyn Cline.

Scrunkore Media "Thread" 2023: Part 5
I got burnout and never got back into it so I'm hella simplifying it lol shit happens
Tumblr media
the scrunko core has burned out, rebooting
50) Wendell & Wild (Movie, 2022)
A lovingly crafted stop-motion animated movie with some good old kid-friendly horror vibes and a punky attitude, even starring a pretty nice transmasc character that I'm super happy to see. It's a nice story with a good visual style and a lot of heart, and I think Key and Peele being involved is pretty funny honestly. [4★]
51) Murder by Numbers (Switch, 2020)
Decent enough Picross game with a basic detective narrative stringing it together that I'm not really a huge fan of, but it does its job and I appreciate the adorable robot as well as some of its representation. And no idea how they got the composer from Ace Attorney and Ghost Trick, lmao [3★]
52) Pokémon Picross (GBC, Unreleased)
Yeah, this was better than the 3DS one, it's just basic Picross that doesn't do much (only real mechanic it adds is being able to change the music) but that's still better than the shitty mobile game model. They really should have just released this, it was straight-up finished and I even got a cart that works on original hardware because I think that's neat. [3.5★]
53) Paper Mario: The Origami King (Switch, 2020)
Going to be killed for playing this as my first Paper Mario but who cares, this game is cool in spite of its awkward battle system (which DOES kinda suck). Just a fun adventure with typical quirky writing and some surprisingly powerful moments, plus an excellent soundtrack, I'm sure some of the earlier games are better but I did play this one and did enjoy it. [4★]
54/55) Knives Out/Glass Onion (Movies, 2019/2022)
Incredible pair of detective movies, both full of really engaging writing and directing work that keeps you invested and never stops being entertaining to watch, surely still really good on a rewatch too. They also really fuckin' hate rich people, especially the second one which is woke as hell and has one of my favourite endings in anything, so that's what some might call "based". I can't wait to see what Rian Johnson does for the third Benoit Blanc movie, which is apparently meant to be a 2024 release. [5★]
56) Sonic the Hedgehog (IDW Comics, 2018-Present)
These are some damn enjoyable comics, telling some fun and generally quite well-written stories set after the events of Sonic Forces with a cast of really cool characters. Honestly kind of ride or die for Tangle and Whisper, but original villains like Dr Starline are great to read too. Early highlight is definitely the Metal Virus arc, but the more recent stuff with Surge was excellent too. Safe to say the team behind these stories know their shit. [4.5★]
57) Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Movie, 2023)
They really did it, they went out of their way to make a bigger and better sequel to one of the greatest animated movies I've seen, and it's very possible that they succeeded... but we won't know until the second part comes out, which looks unfortunately unlikely to be any time soon because production sucked. Still, what we did get is yet another gorgeously animated spectacle with a cool storyline, everyone knows that. [4.5★]
58) Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (Movie, 2023)
One of the only parts of the MCU that I cared about more or less concluded with this movie, and fuck it might be the best one in the trilogy. Rocket's harrowing backstory really hits out with that theme of some jerkass playing god, and the core adventure of the film is pretty engaging too, just as cool as ever. Plus it's now confirmed Vocaloid exists in the MCU lol [4.5★]
59) The Suicide Squad (Movie, 2021)
Another instance of James Gunn making an actual good superhero movie, this time making a good adaptation of something that previously had a bit of a shit one. I appreciate the kinda edgy nature of the titular squad that was handled solidly here, and their antics are honestly pretty funny. Fun action sequences too, and it's honestly really cool how much the movie thinks rats are awesome (they kind of are tbh). Peter Capaldi, the best version of Doctor Who, playing a mad scientist role is also just... really good. [4★]
60) Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio (Movie, 2022)
Man fuck Disney, this is obviously the best version of the Pinocchio story and their attempt to overshadow it was lame as hell. I quite like the darker take on the story with themes of death and war around Italy's rise of fascism (Tom Kenny Mussolini is crazy btw), and of course the stop-motion animation is really quite excellent. Always love to see movies made in such a way. [4★]
61/62) Sonic and the Secret Rings/Black Knight (Games, 2007/2009)
Yeah, I get why the storybook duo of games have a bad reputation, because the motion control gimmicks kinda suck, but Secret Rings suffers from it far more than Black Knight, and that still has the cool ideas and solid writing combined with a great soundtrack (both games have this). Maybe the mission-based level structure isn't great, but there's some fun stuff to be found in these. Wish they were better though. [2.5★/3.5★]

What do you think about movies with a really simple story like the two Avatar movies?
I haven't seen the second one and don't really plan to, but also don't plan not to. I just don't care about it, lol. If someone begs me to watch it with them, I probably would, but I'm not like, marking my calendar like I did with Glass Onion.
A simple, retold, cliche story is not inherently bad--there are reasons certain tropes get popular! Hence, "simplistic story" and "Avatar" can be two separate discussions. Yes, Avatar's an example of a simplistic story (at least the first one is) but, does it work? On what levels does it work or not work? What stands out to people from the film? What do they come away talking about?
For the first one, it was mostly the visuals. Which is fine. Visuals are a part of film. But I'd suggest the story was lacking because no one discussed it. It's framed as a complex story, but it's not, and that complexity is kind of "well, because the world is awesome and it parallels issues in our own world!" But do those parallels have interesting commentary? Glass Onion does. Knives Out does. These are very different films from Avatar, of course, but I'm pointing out that parallels can be done really well. I am not sure the first Avatar's was. And of course what one person finds interesting another might not, so it's subjective. But again, on the whole, there was a consensus that Avatar was not particularly interesting in its social commentary.
For me personally, I remember going into it excited because I've liked other films by Cameron, like True Lies and of course, Titanic, but this one just fell flat for me. But also I've seen it once when I was in like, high school. I didn't remember the character names, the specific plot besides the obvious storyline, or any themes that really struck me because they weren't really themes other stories haven't done better/more provocatively. Like, Cameron himself had done Avatar's themes and storylines better (Titanic's Rose and Jack are much more interesting than the Avatar couple whose names I don't recall). It didn't really get at my emotions either. Cool world though.
I've also heard people say Avatar had no cultural impact really, and I think I'd agree in regards to its story. The characters weren't interesting enough to spawn fandoms, and like I said above, the themes weren't compelling enough to provoke discussions and debates.
I haven't seen Avatar 2, so I can't say more about that generally.
I will, however, say it is funny to me to see the circular logic of people arguing "NO IT DEFINITELY HAD CULTURAL IMPACT" just because the second one is making a ton of money. Like. "It made a ton of money but had no impact" was kind of the main argument about the first one, with "but" being kind of a key point? "The sequel is making a ton of money now so clearly it has cultural impact because it's making a ton of money" is literally just. Missing the point.
It's too soon to comment on the sequel's cultural impact. Idk, maybe the characters are more interesting or it has themes that provoke discussion. I haven't seen much of that thus far though, but also, who knows.
Anyways, "cool fun" is fine and a good enough reason to enjoy entertainment. Apathy isn't the same as virulent dislike, and virulent dislike is more likely to have cultural impact. I wouldn't call Avatar badly written in any way, but I would call the story of the first boring.

glass onion spoilers //
k this would be a video essay if i made video essays but i don't so. i've been ruminating more on what was missing from glass onion for me bc as much as i enjoyed it i felt like there was SOMETHING knives out has that glass onion doesn't, and i actually think it's the same reason i love the big short but don't look up didn't do much for me even though they were both written and directed by adam mckay (the big short was adapted from a non-fiction book tho) just like rian johnson did knives out and glass onion
and i think what knives out and the big short have that glass onion and don't look up lack are real emotional stakes. glass onion and don't look up both feel like movies that are SAYING SOMETHING! but don't have the emotion to back it up
like. knives out and the big short are both hilarious and are also both cynical as fuck about the world, about systems, about people. but the big short makes sure to remind you every few minutes that real every-day people are the ones who ultimately suffered due to the corruption of the us banking system, and knives out is a story told entirely over the course of a familial grieving process for a character who brings out poignant emotion even in largely unsympathetic characters like linda. don't look up and glass onion both fail to attach their messages to actual emotional stakes. don't look up is saying "you should take these extinction-level threats seriously!" while not really taking anything seriously itself, since the movie is mostly just caricatured versions of contemporary media archetypes running around acting unreasonable until it's too late, with very little in the way of showing the actual consequences of ignoring such clear warnings with any kind of gravity. similarly, the message of glass onion is "elon musk is an evil moron" and it's like. true! and...? the emotional undercurrent (helen trying to solve/avenge her sister's murder) is more like an emotional whisper since it's only revealed about halfway through the film, and honestly i think having miles be alive the entire time prevented anything deeper. if he'd either eventually been murdered or maybe had been pretending to have been murdered from the beginning (maybe he's the one who invited blanc to get someone to confess to his murder, and then he could pin andi's murder on them too, etc), maybe there could've been some more nuanced character exploration, but like. there's no central "harlan" figure to hang all the shitty personalities on bc miles is an alive jackass moron so it's hard to care enough about any of the charactrers to find them interesting beyond simply being funny and entertaining a la jodi from knives out. but i don't think knives out would've been good if every character was jodi, and that's kind of what glass onion was.
idk if this made any sense i just wanted to get it out of my brain before going to bed bye

hello I am so curious to hear a more indepth review of glass onion from u if you are so inclined!!! Ty 🤩
hey, and yeah for sure! i just watched the film yesterday so i'm still processing my thoughts and feelings about it, but i'll try to be as articulate as possible.
overall, i'd give glass onion like a 3 out of 5 (or maybe a 3.5 if i'm being generous). it honestly just feels a bit like a rehash of knives out in my opinion, and doesn't really add much to what that film was trying to say. daniel craig was wonderful as usual, janelle monáe fucking killed it, and the film did make me laugh a lot. but it was also unncessarily long, dragged out and took like over an hour to get to the actual plot of the story.
without getting into spoilery specifics, i'll just say that the killer's identity was very obvious and the actual "whodunit" aspect of the original that made it so compelling was completely absent from this one (which i understand was like The Point of the film or whatever, but it just came off as sloppy and underbaked to me). the characters were not as interesting or entertaining to watch as the first one, and the entire film just felt like a glorified cameo fest of "how many actors can we name-drop and stuff into this film for zero reason?" and while it did make me laugh, it just felt too silly for me and i didn't really feel invested or intrigued by anything i was watching. it was literally just a movie you pop on to kill 2 hours at home - idk why people are acting like it's some masterpiece or even a valid contender to knives out when, in my opinion, it isn't.
i was much higher on the film immediately after watching it, but the more i sit with it the less i like it. it's just not memorable to me in the way that the first was, and i was super underwhelmed by it all. the hype for glass onion was extremely high, and that definitely played a role in the ultimate disappointment i felt when i actually watched the film itself. it was just a bit of a letdown for me, honestly. i still enjoyed it just fine, but it's not anything special to me.

My Agatha Christie Re-Reading Project, #31: The Body in the Library
I actually read this book back in October, but didn't finish my review, nor did I proceed with the next title. Well, better late than never.
Miss Marple is back! And with her, she brings the enthusiasm that I lost during N or M. This book is much more to my taste.
I particularly like the beginning, which starts with:
Mrs. Bantry was dreaming. Her sweet peas had just taken a First at the flower show. The vicar, dressed in cassock and surplice, was giving out the prizes in church. His wife wandered past, dressed in a bathing suit, but, as is the blessed habit of dreams, this fact did not arouse the disapproval of the parish in the way it would assuredly have done in real life. Mrs. Bantry was enjoying her dream a good deal.
This pleasant dream is interrupted when the maid comes in to declare that there's a body in the library. Mrs. Bantry then has to determine whether or not she was dreaming (she wasn't), and – with much more difficulty – convince her husband that she wasn't dreaming.
"I did not dream it," said Mrs. Bantry firmly. "Get up at once, Arthur, and go downstairs and see about it."
"You want me to go downstairs and ask if there's a body in the library? I shall look a fool."
"You needn't ask anything," said Mrs. Bantry. "If there is a body – and of course it's just possible that Mary's gone mad and thinks she sees things that aren't there – well, somebody will tell you soon enough. You won't have to say a word."
It's all very charming, the kind of first class Christie banter you'd expect from people called Bantry. :-)
All the bits with Miss Marple and the Bantrys are pretty good, and I also enjoyed the two red herring bad boys of the story, Basil Blake and Raymond Starr. All of that was pretty entertaining.
But the center of the story is the Jefferson/Gaskell family, and there I feel my interest wane a bit. They're a typical Christie family, waiting for the patriarch's money – a bit too typical. We've seen it all before, and usually better. It's hard to muster up much interest for their circumstances, and harder still to find any sympathy when the inlaws living off the old man's money are vexed that Ruby Keene dared to make the move to try to live off the old man's money.
(Sidenote; while there are a bunch of Christies wrapped into the two Knives Out movies, I wonder if this one is the main inspiration for Knives Out, the way A Murder is Announced is the main one for Glass Onion.)
The plot itself is pretty well handled; I like the way clues are dropped in casual conversation.
Solid Christie with a fantastic opening. Verdict: 3/5

Was finally able to watch Glass Onion and I gotta say I did indeed like it. Good film it was.
Knives Out was better still, it’s one of those kind of rare films that I find perfect. Like every single moment is interesting, and there’s nothing to add or take away. It’s just great. Glass Onion was good but didn’t quite have that. I think the big thing was the characters. Like sure in Knives Out they were a rich family of assholes and somewhat eccentric but Glass Onion’s characters were all crazy but turned up to 1000. And at first there’s absolutely no one to root for, not a single likeable person. Marta & her friendship with Harlan was the heart of the first film and the movie’s nothing without it. Without that good person in it. And this film seemed to lack that completely. But then halfway we get her, we get the good person. And damn if the film doesn’t become great because of that. Like I enjoyed Blanc in the first half when I thought he was just along for the ride, but when he was playing them all from the beginning oh it’s so much better. So yeah it turned out really entertaining, solid second entry for Benoit Blanc. I certainly look forward to many more.
edit: after having a day to think about it I love this movie more, all the little things make it so great.

A Review of “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery  (2022)”
Tumblr media
I absolutely adored the first Knives Out which is why I was looking forward to the sequel Glass Onion. This doesn't flip the whodunit genre on its head like the first one but it does tell a very entertaining whodunit film.
When compared to the first Knives out, it starts very slowly and unfortunately doesn't have as strong an ending either. It is also lacking in the creative editing and cinematography of the first film. Even though this film has the same editor and cinematographer as the first film.
However, the cast is outstanding! They all did a great job playing over-the-top archetypes of rich people. I also thoroughly enjoyed the mystery itself, which constantly kept me guessing. While this tackles terrible rich people again, it does explore it differently. It shows how Miles Bron's (Edward Norton) billionaire nature can have a grip on people and the mistrust it can cause. Likewise, it continues to have fun, witty dialogue and a great musical score that I loved from the first film as well.
Overall, it doesn't hit the same highs as the first Knives Out but it is a great follow-up. I'm looking forward to more in this franchise! I still think it was a missed opportunity to call it 'Fork In Hell'.

Glass Onion (2022) - Movie Review
While I didn't go as crazy for Knives Out as others, I still really enjoyed the modern whodunit. That set me up to be excited for Glass Onion with Daniel Craig returning as Benoit Blanc to solve another mystery surrounding a great ensemble cast. Unfortunately, I found my self let down by Glass Onion.
That's not to say that Glass Onion is bad because it's not. The cast is good, as to be expected from such a cast. Daniel Craig has cemented Benoit Blanc as a new Hercule Poirot. There's also a lot of clever writing, and I found it enjoyable throughout.
My biggest issue with the film is its structure. I can't say much without spoiling things, but the first hour of the movie ultimately ends up feeling pointless. The hour mark is when the story really kicks into gear as that first hour is basically all set up. Then, the next 30ish minutes is all flashback in which all of that setup could've been included in a much shorter amount of time. This causes the actual mystery solving part of the movie, which is what we're there for, to feel rushed at the end.
I didn't feel like I was on the ride like I did with the first one. I felt like someone showed me a first person video of the ride. I couldn't get myself to fully engage with what was happening.
Overall, Glass Onion is an enjoyable mystery. The cast is entertaining and there are some fun twists and turns, but the structure and pacing of the plot made it impossible for me to get as invested as I wanted to be.
Grade: B

This is magnificent story telling!
Highly entertaining movie, I kinda figured who did it, but the movie is well made you enjoy it regardless and the cast is fantastic, odd group of actors to be together in one movie but the story is amazing and Daniel Graig is wonderful! love, love, love ❤️
Rian Johnson is a freakin genius 👏

Two Veterans and a Nurse...
Not knowing if one date was enough to get the proper feel of a person, I organised a second date with Pickles. At that particular moment, all the way back in October, I wasn’t sure who to pick between him and Shrek. After all, our first meet-ups were similar but also quite different. I’d learned a lot more about Pickles’s life and was enjoying our chats on Messenger (after I’d successfully stalked him on the socials after receiving a business card for his podcast. It does beggar the question that maybe being a private detective would be the perfect job for me?), whereas Shrek was easier to talk to because of the fact that we both grew up in ethnic families that had specific views on our marital status.
That, and the fact that I wanted to watch a movie and had some time off work. The film I wanted to see, however, didn’t have any sessions after 5PM. And honestly, See How They Run would have probably been much more humorous than what Amsterdam turned out to be (despite all the big names in it).
But perhaps I ought to have taken the night to watch See How They Run. Alas, the universal perception that watching a film by your lonesome in a cinema is cringe won through. On the other hand, Saoirse Ronan was in it.
Dilemmas, dilemmas.
Still, those are regrets that I ought to unpack another time. For now, I shall eagerly look forward to Glass Onion. From a few comments I’ve seen online, it’s apparently even better than Knives Out. And that was a film that caught me by surprise. Besides, who doesn’t love Daniel Craig’s over the top southern accent?
Back to the date at hand!
A bit like the first time I met Pickles, we convened outside his place of work in the city. From there, and emboldened at my initial excellent choice for food, I directed us towards some delicious sushi - with a brief stopover at a local JB Hi-Fi to pick up A Plague Tale: Requiem! Nigiri, hand rolls, gunkan and even side dishes! All for the low, low price of $4.20.
Except, to my dismay, he didn’t much like avocado! Raised Jewish, he also wasn’t much into shellfish like prawns. Nor did he like scallops!
He didn’t even touch the nigiri! And the tuna he had was always cooked. No raw fish! The very essence of sushi to some!
I had failed.
At the very least, that was how I felt as we headed towards the cinema, the tickets for Amsterdam nestled in my leather Mickey Mouse wallet after I’d purchased it beforehand. Once there, PIckles bought a medium-sized popcorn. An ample snack for a growing man.
I, on the other hand, was never much of a snacker. And rightly told him so before we found our seats and prepared ourselves for the wilm.
What to say about Amsterdam?
For one, there were a lot of big-name celebrities. From Anya Taylor-Joy to Christian Bale to Margo Robbie to Rami Malek to Robert de Niro. Taylor Swift even made a cameo!
So, you would think with such a diverse cast of actors, it would be much more entertaining than it was. After all, the trailers sold it as a comedy whoddunnit mystery. But, in all honesty, the comedic stylings were too far and few between. Or just a bit too much on the subtle side. There were a few chuckles here and there but nothing that had me guffawing. Except maybe how dramatic Taylor Swift’s death was when she got pushed in front of a car.
Rather, Amsterdam was a fictional interpretation of real events. And honestly, it was interesting to see how the Western world had to grapple with the growing threat of fascism back in the early 1930s.
In many ways, I also felt like I had failed in choosing the event as well. The movie wasn’t as funny as I had hoped.
In any case, after the movie was over, there was hardly any time to debrief - a most definite thing that ought to have happened - as my train was in five minutes and if I didn’t catch it, I would have also had to wait another thirty minutes. So, with a hasty goodbye, my time with Pickles came to a close.
On the ride home, though, we managed to exchange a flurry of messages.
Alas, it was not to be.
Our brief acquaintanceship would remain as it was, never to blossom into a full-fledged romance. Why, you ask, dear reader?
Well, despite my miscalculations on food and possibly the movie, Pickles was also thinking of heading overseas. As an individual that places a lot of weight on physical touch (according to him), he would be desolate by the separation. As for me, physical touch probably sits near the bottom of my love languages. I’ve never been comfortable with people casually touching me in any intimate manner, like my lower back or warmly embracing me. And you can completely forget the air kisses. Eugh!
There were just too many things that weren’t clicking and he was also looking for something short-term.
Alas, it seemed that despite a strong initial showing, our budding relationship was to be relegated to the dreaded friend zone (not that I mind. It just makes these things easier for me. And is probably less scary in the long run. Basically, think of me like Anzu from Romantic Killer. After all, it’s a particularly apt comparison. Just, you know, without the demon Riri conjuring up terrible situations to put me in).
So, what shall befall poor Kyndaris’s love life next? Will there be another contender that can tug at my heart strings?
Next time on Dating 2.0, looking forward to terrible teeth and an attempt at a ‘friendly catch-up!’

I was reading something today somewhere (Insta? here? I don't really remember) and it was talking about Daniel Craig in Bond, and in Knives Out, and there was a comment where someone mentioned something to the effect of watching this movie and realizing how much he was phoning it in with Bond (or, at least, not apparently having as much fun).
That does sorta seem sad because, as much as I can agree that many of the previous Bond films were, well, very problematic, I did enjoy Daniel Craig's take (he's one of my 2 faves, up there with Lazenby in his single go). But I can see it being less fun, overall, because of expectations and critics and stuck-up losers who hate change and, maybe most importantly, the seriousness of his films. I mean, after all, they're a bit more hard-hitting than Pierce Brosnan's, for example (though, I will admit, I did also enjoy those).
Anyhow, long story short, I figured I might as well give this one a watch. Plus, I'd only seen 2 movies this month and while 3 in a month is still the lowest it has been in a while, it's 1 more than 2!
This movie was actually quite fun. It's not quite Ocean's 11, but the heist thing is actually pretty entertaining. And yet, despite being so big, it is also pretty low-key - it doesn't get too big for itself, it doesn't try to dazzle you with the splendor of it's Vegas (the race, I guess), and it has enough humor interspersed that it never really drags or bores. And Daniel Craig definitely is having fun here - something that definitely carries over to Knives Out and Glass Onion.
This had been on my list for a while and I'd just been putting it off - glad I finally got around to it. We need more "have fun with this" Daniel Craig, that is for sure.

Glass Onion finished Jan 1, 2023
well i guess this is my first one i'm doing here so i guess let's start with the beginning:
The Circumstances I Watched This Under:
very good question actually. i watched knives out on christmas for 2 reasons: my family doesn't really do holidays so i don't do anything for christmas and was just chilling and also i was informed that ummm there's a fruity little detective in there and he wears Outfits. if there's two things i love on this bitch of an earth it's gay detectives and men in Outfits. what was i to do. there's the detective clause (if there is a detective, i will watch it) when people recommend me things for a reason.
i really enjoyed knives out! i thought it was a fun film. i can't believe i didn't watch it sooner but also i'm allergic to watching movies most of the time. i really only did that because i was caught at the right time in the right mood. it was fun and snappy and didn't drag and i was totally able to call the twist when the murder was shown but they were still able to keep the tension up through the film and make it a fun ride. i think that's a really tough balance to hit: both making me (the viewer) feel smart for figuring things out but also keeping me entertained and the tension up for, what was it, like another hour and a half after that was shown? i can't really think of a thread that they let hanging that wasn't tied up somewhere at the end. i don't have any interest in rewatching it though so i will not be going back and actually checking that claim; it was a satisfying one time thing.
Thoughts on the Film Itself:
this was really an interesting one. it felt really unsatisfying but in a completely satisfying way because it felt like that was the point? like okay look: why don't we take a step back and uh, talk about Among Us, you know, like in the movie. i hated among us. i played maybe 4 games and got so sad that it's to date the only game i have ever asked to return. it makes me upset to think about. i however know exactly why i feel that way about it - because my first experience with mafia style games was through playing epicmafia with a bunch of old friends back in like 2015 and in my first ever game the guiser took my identity and i was sitting in dead chat confused as hell with one other person consoling me as maf proceeded to win because nobody there knew me yet and couldn't see that the guiser was acting nothing like me at all. the games got even more complex from there in a way that cannot be replicated in something like among us because there just aren't the mechanics to do so. it's a totally different playstyle that just doesn't mesh with me. i don't want to be on voice call defending my actions and trying to remember what course i took through the building to do my "tasks" when unfamiliarity with the game can read as suspicious from the get go; i want Cop Maf (one slot for each cop role) where everyone's trying to role call but nobody knows which cop they are and what reports they're getting due to the differences in how all the cop roles work and everyone has a gun and half of them might be fakes and it just turns into a massive 1.5 hour 10 person logic puzzle trying to untangle who is actually what. among us just felt hollow after being used to that.
and that was the introduction to the movie. you see why this tickled me? the whole thing felt very... netflix. it felt a bit millennial tongue in cheek. it felt like arden season 2. there's a certain kind of pop culture reference that all of these aforementioned things do that just pisses the hell out of me because i do not care whatsoever who you have in your movie (i can't remember where i've mentioned this but i'm faceblind, it's fine i just like joking about it it's a funny condition, but that means 95% of cameos i cannot and will not catch) or what super-specific references you put into your show about what's going on in our world today; i feel like they only serve to date it in a way that isn't really charming, it just kind of feels out of place and like it'll be irrelevant in the years to come. it feels like a product placement that you aren't getting paid for. it feels like you're throwing me tootsie roll at a parade when i'm eight and hot and thirsty and tired and all i want is shade, water, and a proper meal. it breaks my immersion to have someone like, bring up Wordle or something. it feels superficial in a way that i cannot connect with and just leaves me confused and off put. however because the whole thing was set up to be unsatisfying all of those things ended up being really satisfying. i really liked that! it was a good reminder to myself that these things i typically really don't like can be played well or, well, "well" is subjective, but can be played in a way that i enjoy. that's really one of the beauties of tropes, isn't it: having an audience who is able to have preconceived notions going into something new means that you're able to twist them and manipulate them as you see fit.
speaking of fit: benoit fits whipped. all the fits whipped. end statement on that one i don't have anything else to say other than to acknowledge the thing that made me watch this in the first place.
i feel like i should say something about the story? then again if there's one thing to know about me it's that i like a good detective story. i'll eat anything up. you should know my feelings on that by now. i don't really want to call it a mystery because i don't think benoit would appreciate it and it wasn't really a mystery; i think that if we were privy to the information benoit was from the start there would have been no questions at all what was going on. i'm glad we weren't, if there's one thing i love more than detectives it's a story told non-linearly, but it's not really a mystery. hell i think even without that information it was pretty clear what was going on, same with knives out, which again i wish so bad i had told someone my thoughts on at the start to prove i called it. i don't really think the story has anything to do with my enjoyment of the film. i think everything surrounding the story was so tight that it didn't really matter.
also i gotta say: i read Murder in Retrospect by Agatha Christie pretty recently (i think i finished that one in December) and poirot in that book and benoit here both have a very similar way of talking to people to portray themselves as someone who the subject can trust, but in the same breath it kind of seems to disgust them in a way. poirot even mentions it in the book ("And although that derisive, patronizing attitude was exactly the one which Hercule Poirot had aimed at inducing, nevertheless he found himself annoyed by it.") and I really enjoyed that about the both of them.
that's about all i got on the film i've typed myself out. everything else i think i could possibly say has been said by someone more eloquent than i; i'm good at writing things that pertain to my lived experiences and analyzing how i view media through a lens that is uniquely my own, i'm not that good at branching outside that.
Did I like it?
perhaps the most important question here, really the only one that matters. yeah i liked it!
Who else would like this one?
detective freaks go nuts go bonkers yeahhhhh baby. watch knives out first but if you like that and you're cool with something a little nontraditional that plays with tropes go for it.
