I just found out that the majority of the music I used to listen to back in my "emo phase" was actually nu-metal. I don't know what to do with this information

that summer my parents took away myphone was sooo bad as well because qhen they found out i was using my mothers ipad they saw my tumblr dash and it was mostly like. books and memes but i followed a couple ace positivity blogs so they saw that. and my mother made me give her my phone password But i did hold out for like a week which is really impressive considering i was so scared.well and she went thru it and my she left a letter on my bed that was like "You are listening to evil music and having depression and looking at asexual stuff. Well the evil music is making you depressed and you arent asexual ur just not interested in boys right now. we are sending u to therapy." which was stressful for me but i was just glad they didnt realise i liked girls. and also that id get to go to therapy. but my psychiatrist referred me to an ed clinic place where i couldnt get treated very long bc it wasnt my main issue and insurance wouldnt cover it. but one of the people there was like Well you should keep an eye on her and take away sharp objects and make sure shes not alone to long. which was really bad advice and actively made me worse. so i was basically banned from being in my own bedroom that summer. And one time i wanted to read a book in peace and my siblings were being loud so i went up to my room andf my mother FREAKEDDDDDDD OUT when i woudlnt come downstairs i heard her ask my dad if she should call the crisis line like GIRL THIS IS NOT A CRISIS !!! I'M TRYING TO REREAD THRONE OF GLASS LEAVE ME ALONE !!! well it was fine in the end i dont remember much of it. BUT THE DOOR WAS OPENNNNNN i was literally sitting in the middle of the room like chill the fuck OUT. also unsurprisingly this did not help in any way and actively encouraged the disordered eating and self harm because i had no control over my damn life. Anyway i got really into library and would check out like 10 books every couple weeks and my mother insisted on reading thru the summaries of all of them to make sure they were "appropriate" but i didnt gaf bc i also had my school library where i could read whatever i wanted. and i also got really into handwriting fanfiction and i used tumblr instead of paying attention in my classes. so literally all it did was make me really really mad

So I personally don’t listen to a lot of new modern singers or music, just because I’m more of a 70s and 80s girl but also because whenever I try and listen to a new artist I generally just don’t like them. like the last new artists I listened to and liked was Lana del Rey and Lorde back in 2012-2013ish to that put it in perspective lol

Anyway I was listening to my 70s/80s songs today and it dawned on me that fans back then probably didn’t have parasocial relationships with the artists during those eras. maybe if the artist was really well known for some relationship drama or something, they’d speculate about the song or who it was written for, but i feel like when a song/album was released, they listened to it, they liked or disliked it, maybe they discussed the lyrics/instruments/melody of song etc with people and that was it. like they continued to listen to the album or any new stuff the artist put out but they weren’t hung up on the artist themself, going “omg this was totally about x and these lyrics refer to how y did during his relationship with x”. idk it just seems like it was a lot more fun back then when the artist dropped a song or album and everyone was excited to hear the album for *the songs themselves* and not for what/who the songs were gonna be about.

anyway aside from me just liking older songs better, I wonder if I subconsciously stay away from newer music because of all the discourse around it that’s everywhere on social media. sorry this is kinda long but I wanted to get this out somewhere lol

wow i've never thought of this actually but that makes total sense.

Obviously parasocial relationships existed back then, the Beatles being a perfect example, but it's at an entirely new level these days. Back then artists kept things private and if they didnt, it was easy to avoid or be ignorant with the lack of media like the internet or news networks focusing on celebrity gossip. Now we have all of that, plus artists often intertwine their personal lives with public persona/brand (whether it's their choice or just kind of happens). It's so hard to avoid nowadays.

Outside of their personal lives, I think artists are just way too public nowadays. Artists (not necessarily small ones, i'm talking about bigger ones or ones on the rise) don't really get to make a first impression anymore, even before we hear a song, we might already have an idea of who they are. It's really hard to go in completely blind with big artists because you're force-fed so much unimportant lore that sours the music. It's just really not about the music anymore at all, which is sad because at the end of the day, that's the most important.

- barely moves in their sleep. is also a very light sleeper. Used to sleep with one eye open like they say... has trouble falling asleep . Often, somewhat. Nightmares and all, if the nightmare is p bad enough to wake them up theyll just curl up and try not to shake/cry too much.

- has a knife under the mattress /couch w the handle poking out for quick access. Just in case someone breaks in... or smth. Alex thinks this is . Peculiar as hell but ripley has always done this so they dont see the issue.

- horror viddygames/movies doesnt scare them... if anything it makes them laugh ("Wow the ink there is really badly done... haha").

- an excellent cook, makes food for eight and alex whenever they can. Goes to the market to get the freshest ingredients and all the sellers are afraid of them. What can i say they Love Haggling <3 .

- fashion is not their forte. I mean they have a style... sorta, not really. Likes comfy clothes, sportsy a bit. Casual shirts and all. Maybe a bit of casual whatever the fuck its called...military ish ? Very-Old-grandfathercore clothing even. but just looks at those types of clothes from afar (eight looking at ripley in the background taking notes of what theyre looking at so that she can buy those for them later LOL). ( they do not like buying themself things, . "I have clothes that are still in wearable state. Somewhat. why would i buy anything rn do i even have enough money for this"). Almost Any nice/fancy clothes they have, were bought by eight, or alex, or pearl actually. But mostly eight.

- likes collecting small rocks from when they go on hikes lol.

- talking abt hikes. And camping. Theyre pretty ultralight about this. And by that i mean the only things they bring are:

a raincoat (if they know its gonna rain), something to disinfect small cuts, A sak(swiss army knife), a lighter, their walking poles.

- when they got back from agent work and went on their way home at night, sometimes they said fuck it and took a detour, or stopped a few bus stops before and just walked, not so safe sure but the sights sure are pretty, the cold air felt (feels) nice. After enough walking they bought a soda and just chilled on a bench, they either got up and went home for real or fell asleep there if they wer3 too tired. A small indulgence but it broke from the work eat sleep thing they had going on. Starts to do this w 8 and 4 too shortly after they meet+talk to eachother(the walking at night part not the sleeping on a public bench), its a nice moment to have and to share.

I probably had more in my head but u kno. I forgor like they say. Also im not rewritting anything else i posted abt b4 in full cus im lazy hhah.

OKAY OMG. you probably weren’t expecting this much stuff, but you gave me a chance to talk about it so here goes.

first off, spoilers for top gun maverick, be warned.

So. lol. I'll preface this by saying that my thoughts on this absolutely arent objective in any way... i waited 3 (t h r e e) whole years for this movie to come out and honestly up until i was sitting in the movie theater i still thought they would push it out again, didnt feel real lmao

now a few of my thoughts, in no particular order:

i arrive at the cinema. i sit down. the lights go out. i lean over to my friend. i whisper: i hope they play Danger Zone. they HAVE to. my friend agrees. the movie starts, and lo and behold, the first notes of Danger Zone reach my ears. My crops are watered, my skin is clear. i look to my friend, we nod at each other. we turn back to the screen. we understand. we know this’ll be good.

Thought 1 flows neatly into Thought 2, which is that they knew exactly what kind of movie they were making. like, the main target audience for this movie were Dads™ and they hit the right balance between making it attractive in terms of nostalgia vs. new stuff. i think i saw a letterboxd review that phrased it like "having references to the original without being distracting" and that’s exactly what i felt like (see re: the Danger Zone example). And also: iconic homoerotic beach volleyball scene set to the tune of "playing with the boys"? turned into fun football scene on the beach set to New Music From Today (which was good, but the whole scene could've been gayer imo.)

sure. it's basically military propaganda, i know, we all know, it is known. It still looks cool as hell, i love people flying planes and say smart stuff and click a lot of buttons that look very complex and professional

AND that opening was so perfectly maverick i love it. he just HAD to push a little further

it was SO FUNNY at times! there were sincere (and at times cheesy) parts, but there were a few really funny moments that worked really well

rly liked all the new young pilots, though i expected them to focus a little more on them? but tbh it worked as it is, i didnt really felt like too much was missing (again, maybe a lil homoeroticism but you cant have everything)

Listen. Jennifer Connelly. Penny. Her character was... well. I liked her! But also. Well, she was a lil two dimensional, but idk? Or maybe its bc she was the love interest of Tom Cruise, who i really cant imagine in any kind of romantic relationship, no matter what movie he's in. I didnt really expect too much and i felt like it was done alright. it was solid.

(also... i kinda dont like tom cruise as a person, mainly bc of the whole scientology thing, but lets not get into that here. no negativity in this ask)

ofc ICEMAN!! RIP my man. Obviously wished he was in the movie more but *waves at the real life complications with Val Kilmer* still though, mav and ice texted throughout the movie and it was. so gay. like, i've read fanfiction that might have had these exact messages in them lmao

also. the whole thing about ice and mav? like we all expected there to be more of a rivalry, but they're just out here texting and chilling with each other. good for them.

the scene where they had to fly the route in 2 mins 30 seconds and everybody’s like “thats impossible” and maverick is like “hold my beer” and does it in 2:15 and yeah i’m LIVING for that shit! call me a basic bitch i dont care!!

Do any of your characters have secret references or meanings to their names? I’m always a fan of those!

When I name characters, I most often choose a name based on how it sounds/how it would be said and if that sound communicates the character in some way. In some ways the impression of the name and its relation to other names can create symbolism for the character. However, there are times where the names are direct references to something, and with the list I made below they will be at the end bc the explanation may be longer.

(This is exclusively splat ocs because adding all my other ones will make this list too long lmao. Plus I might talk a bit about their inspirations too!)

All this stuff under the cut!!!

Starting with Peur, I chose the name bc it just sounded nice with the plosive P and if the vowels arent stressed. I always notice that if the u and e are switched it becomes 'puer' which means 'boy' in latin. Peur is inspired by pineapples, Mallorca and the summery vibes of Splatoon 3

'Orion' was a kinda cool name I chose bc I didnt wanna go with 'octavian' because it sounded too basic. I think his name adds some mystery and implies he is a classy person too (but also I am a critical role fan so the name sometimes reminds me of tiberius lol). The character is inspired by takoyaki, red son from Monkie Kid, daffy duck (mainly the voice), RPDR, saucy santana and jjba.

Oriana and all the octavio cousins have their names bc they just sound cool and fitting with their character and aesthetic, for example Olav sounds serious but memorable (for a politician) and Odaliah sounds regal and sophisticated. Oriana's name to me sounds like it would belong to someone popular so yeah. Every octavio oc I made is inspired by a musical artist and Beyonce's Renaissance album lol.

Troy's name is a direct reference to the city of Troy in Greco-Roman stories (Ilead and Aeneid), the city that is destined to fall from the Greek invasion (dont worry Troy usnt destined to die or anything lol). I think it fits because Troy is a history nerd and he just chose this name (but also it could reference Aeneas from the Aeneid who left Troy to found Rome in myth). Other than that, Troy is inspired by some JPEGMAFIA songs and my fave superhero Miles Morales (especially after atsv)

Ace's name for starters is just a short but cool name and it also refers to the ace of playing cards, not assigned to any number (like agents in the NSS) but still apart of the deck. I made the character whilst listening to MF Doom who is one of my fave rappers because of their comic book/supervillain aesthetic (check out the song crosshairs)

DJ/the Captain was called Hubert sorta as a joke lmao. Basically my sibling joked that a lot of the character names I come up with are quite goofy (shes right lol) especially after I showed her all the splashtags I made for fun. So at some point I was designing my own versions of the agents and I made a really short agent 3 with a big forehead, a receding hairline and bad posture who acts like an edgy teen and gets bullied at school (I thought it would be intersting to make this kind of scrunkle) and I was like 'ok well this is HUBERT'. I will talk about him more/share some concept stuff another time to keep it short but hes inspired by gorillaz phase 1 and psychonauts, also he moves around /poses awkwardly like the spot in atsv, especially with the shoulder and neck posture.

I kept the naming for Neo quite easy, just Neo and simple as that. However my Neo 3 took this name because its quite mysterious, lacks any attatchment to gender (Neo is agender) and is better than their birth name. But now that I think about it, its a Matrix reference and Neo is a revolutionist who rejects the system! Neo is inspired by Hobie Brown in atsv and Mayday from No Straight Roads (and yes Neo's freinds are also NSR inspired too)

I had to come up with Teryon's name when naming some files of the first few drawings of him. The name sounds kinda serious but also the shortening to 'Terry' implies he is also casual, the average friendly guy. Terry also sounds kinda like 'teddy (teddy bear🥺)' to me but I didnt want to be too on the nose. I made him bc I wanted to make a fuzzy inkfish character since the ones I saw on this site looked really cool, also Mr. Grizz's boss fight attacks looked cool to me. Terry is inspired by music by Thundercat, Tame Impala, Childish gambino and Zuke from No Straight Roads

Ok so for this last one, TW fordeath, murder and a bit of gore because I will be mentioning the Ilead and Achilles/Hector stuff.

Anchilles (omg thx crystalmonk!) Is a name I definitely thought through, the 'Achilles' bit doesnt refer to a heel or anything but actually the character himself and the gruesone thing he did to Hector in the Ilead. Achilles is a Greek soldier and Homeric hero who killed Hector (a Trojan warrior) as revenge for killing his best bro (bit fruity ngl). He was so angry at Hector for doing this that he continued to beat his dead body and he cut holes in his ankles, tied rope through them and attatched the rope to his chariot so he could drag Hector as he charioted back to the Greek camp. So yeah, Achilles biting people ls ankles is a reference to that. The smallfry is inspired by King from the owl house and ellie from No Straight Roads (a little alligator with a helicopter for some reason).

Sephoras didnt know his hair was wavy for YEARS because he grew up in really bad conditions (financially, emotinally, etc.) and never learned good hygene habits + never had the money to buy good hair products

Lucy is part shapeshifter, her father being an animal-shifter who could change into goats, deer and other similar creatures. while shes unable to shapeshift herself, she does have goat ears and horns, and a deer's tail (this also means she has a lotta bodyhair, including chest hair and sometimes facial hair). also this kind of shapeshifter hybrid (one that has a shapeshifter parent but doesnt have the ability to shift themselves) in Drakenterra is called a caminist :3

Angelica's parents, Johann and Hecate Emperor, have about 14 (?) kids in total, 7 biological and 6 adopted. Angelica is the oldest.

Huen has no surname. When she became a senator and was asked for her full name, she kept saying "just Huen :)" and staring menacingly at them, until they lost their nerve and decided she would be, in fact, just Senator Huen (no last name given).

Angelica Emperor's full name is Angelica Ordolia Celeste Eudora Barbara Emperor, as her parents had so many names they liked and couldn't just pick one (they later stuggled to come up with names for their other 6 biological children, Angelica's youngest sister being named Angelica II).

Angelica's has a munchkin cat named Fluffy Baron Cecil Vanilla Cosmo Tabby I, Tabby for short.

Maffi has a jackdaw named espresso, but her youngest brother Bernard INSISTS on calling it Muffin (David finds it funny).

Bernard almost always accidentaly camouflages wherever he is. He will stand next to a blue walpaper dressed in a shirt and vest of the exact same color. He will blend into the curtains. People often forget he's even there.

Angele knows how to sew and always makes amazing costumes for halloween (once Ellie introduces her to cosplaying, the game is on).

Ellie often makes references to Nullterra's popculture, which confuse the characters from Drakenterra (and a few other dimenstions) immensily. ("And who is this.... General Kenobi???" "Who tf is Bob Ross??" "What the fuck is a thor?" "No, I dont wanna have a bad time??" "I guess I am filled with determination?" "who is rick and why does he roll?" etc.)

Ellie was a fandom kid and probably wears FNAF and Undertale merch around the others (causing further confusion).

Sephoras has a thing for dumb brand names and slogans. He will point them out and complain about how nonesensical they are frequently.

Cyan's music taste changes all the time, one time they'll be making trap remixes of any song they get their hands on, next they're blasting classical music during a car ride, then they're listening to old rock bands the next time you see them. no one knows how many instruments they can play

Lucy can play ukulele and guitar

James collects flowers and Lucy always takes them and puts them into a herbarium. They often try to make teas out of stuff they find too, or use them as herbs. they also make flowercrowns together

Dots and Angele are the rich kids in the friend group, while Cyan and Seph have both experienced poverty at some point in their lives.

Ellie is a child of divorce.

having music critic thots abt the weeknd im so so sorry

i saw the weeknd in concert last summer, it was amazing. i really dont like stadium shows usually, but his was killer, he had a cool stage concept (gently mad max-ish cult leader and his dancer-disciples, giant inflatable moon) and he's got the presence to fill up all that space. and ive been listening to him for almost a decade, obviously the music's there. actually the show i was at was where he debuted the trailer for the idol. its out now and i havent watched yet. i thought it looked cool then, but after everything ive heard.....im just really ambivalent.

in the early days, when he was keeping mysterious, no press, no photos, you didnt even know if the weeknd was a band or a guy. just this chilly, atmospheric, sleazy/sexy horror-movie r&b. nothing supernatural. but cruel. the lyrics were all about the worst kind of fuckboy shit, and obviously drugs, and the music really seemed to give proper weight to it. the speaker in the songs was awful, the music was telling you that his actions were violent and terrifying for the women he's hurting and for toxic for himself. if youre a person attracted to men, you know what its like to see how awful a guy can be and still be into him, maybe even BECAUSE of how awful he is. thats a fucking horror movie. those first xo eps are crazy, i still listen to them.

then he goes pop star. i remember the collab w/ ariana grande in 2014 was surprising but it found a perfect, plausible midpoint between their two universes. then he goes full max martin in 2015 with "can't feel my face" and again, bizarre to see this plausible way for the prince of darkness to get to the top 40 via a neo-michael jackson jam with a veiled drug reference as opposed to multiple explicit ones. but it made sense! he danced onstage now! i remember hearing it on the radio when i was picking my cousins up from middle school, that felt surreal.

and he just kept on doing the popstar thing. i dont think the sleaze ever really left, it just receded into the background. killer atmosphere, more pop hooks, a general darkness that felt credible coming from him because of the early stuff, its just lit with neon now. he gets increasingly more conceptual, which i love. i love a concept album. its still about fucked up relationships and now death more generally instead of drugs specifically. cool, great. i've been with him the entire time. that brings us up more-or-less to the present.

im not gonna recap all the shit around the idol, if you want it im sure theres an article or youtube video thatll do a better job than i can. ill just summarize my own thoughts: it feels like the sleaze is back, maybe some of the horror, but also Glamour. johnny depp's supermodel daughter has cum on her face. we're seeing headlines about how gross the sex scenes are. look how Glamorous this is. classic showbiz trick of using a cautionary tale about gross men preying on women to just....create images and narratives about gross men preying on women. this might be the place i cant follow him. i cant rule out watching it, i am a habitual hater and i might be in the mood to hate soon. but its making me think about the way we use glamour and beauty in entertainment. it cant be a default, it has an effect on the story.
