I understand that literature nerd Jason Todd is kind of overblown in fanon compared to it's actual presence in canon (a few issues during his pre (and post?)crisis Robin tenure that highlight it) BUT consider that I think it's hilarious if the unhinged gun toting criminal has strong opinions on poetry

i think it's interesting how steph is like... the nerds see her as part of the popular group, and sure we see her talking to the cheerleaders a little, but other than that she doesn't really seem to be one of them in the truest sense? i could fully believe that she feels like the tiniest bit of an outcast there, like she's just cool enough for max to give her a pass but she doesn't really click with them that well. she feels to me like the bridge between the popular ones and the nerds, which is appropriate i suppose for her place in the story.

In general I enjoyed it and I think it had #a lot of important things to say but also maybe highlighted some weaknesses(?) in both books? #or - I guess just the fact that the sff stuff (which skews a little more magicy here) is kinda small scope relative to its potential #and more there to serve the plot and characters. Which actually maybe is the point. idk- there's def mixed reviews lol #it has a messy unlikable MC (like actually - when half the weak ass reviews are saying the MC is annoying you know they are Actually a #complex character) and some interesting relationship dynamics #it is pretty solidly a sequel - I wouldnt read this without reading TSBW #cara does show up in here& tbh her characterisation felt quite different to me? unsure how I feel about that? but maybe it's the biased POV #also to be clear: polyam MC; not a polyam romance or anything #(there's - kinda a romance? or various feelings floating around and she 'ends up' with someone. feel like i would have liked that to end #more subtley but that's probably my personal taste lol) #man some of the 1 star reviews of this are kinda.....just racist though. can we get some measured critique in here #as I said i am not entirely sure how I feel about it but not quite in a way I can articulate.... idk! i think it's worth the read tho #it's maybe one of those revolutions that feels solved a little too easily in the end - but then also is it solved or is it just that the #narrative has to end at a certain point

Ok i just finished watching The Marvels at home.

I didnt have faith in this movie at all bc

1) im an mcu slanderist (as if i wasnt a marvel slanderist in general)

2) i reaaaaally didnt know what they were going to do with my girl Kamala after what happened in the show

But i was pleasantly surprised!! I went to sort of hate watch it but not really ,yknow curiosity killed the cat and whatnot but then i just?!??? I enjoyed it!!! Quite a lot!!

I started to watch it as a film person first and a Ms Marvel stan second and i was pleased as both but also very pleased as a girl (gn) its just. . . Idk man. Its an INSANE movie i laughed very hard at it at times, the music killed me , I loved the colors, the emotional beats, the chemistry,the characterizations, even the B plot felt fun. It was a nice watch.

I say its a cute movie to watch w the girlies (gn) and just enjoy.

working retail is making me remember how much i hate stupid customers btw

#so i work in a tiny nonprofit thrift store. right. #its one room w concrete floors and very compact shelving because there is just No Room for anything. #and our office/employee backroom/breakroom is a little corner with wood+canvas dividers separating it from the rest of the store #with LOTS of signs saying employees only nothing is for sale here etc etc etc #and there was a customer today who went through the divider to ''shop'' in the ''other section of the store'' #and we didnt even KNOW someone was back there until she brought up one of my coworker's purses to ask how much it was </3 #im so baffled. there are so many signs saying its employees only. #not to mention that the office is full of notes and paperwork and my boss's computer and filing cabinets and the fridge and microwave #its CLEARLY an office/break room. even if you ignore all the signs. and YET. #there's also people who will literally just steal. anything and everything #which like. i will always support shoplifting from walmart or another big retail company. in fact i encourage it. #but a tiny locally owned NONPROFIT thrift store that supports local arts ???? #The Splinter In The Sky #aroaessidhe 2024 reads #I enjoyed a lot about this! but I think narratively it fell apart a bit in the end? #I will say the worldbuilding in terms of the MCs culture and depiction of colonialism is very rich and detailed #(I feel like I haven’t read a ton of scifi colonialism books based around African colonialism specifically?) #But the worldbuilding of the rest of the empire is kinda vague?? like there’s details but it didn’t quite feel meshed together. #It definitely falls into the trap of ‘imperial colonialsim and systemic injustices will be fixed if we kill this one guy’ #(or 3-5 people; here) #I kind of wish it was more complex and maybe a duology in that sense? Or; I was actually kinda expecting a more tragic dramatic ending. #I did really enjoy the characters though! #I started the book being like there’s no way x will be a love interest right. there’s no way you can convince me of that #but by the end I was endeared to her as a character. though did think she was too…nice and good for who she was in the narrative #sapphic books

not until i started reading restoration and post-restoration plays written by women like aphra behn and susanna centlivre did i fully understand romantic comedy on another level. the male love interests are just built better. like as much as i love a midsummer night's dream, if i were hermia i would never risk death or a forced life in a nunnery for lysander. no. hell no. he's just ken. but if i were miranda would i risk my thirty-thousand-pound inheritance to elope with sir george airy? if i were leticia would i contemplate leaving behind my country and my hated old husband i was tricked into marrying the second i learn that belmour is still alive, to live with his banished ass in exile? hm. let me thin—yes.

#text post #tales from diana #aphra behn #susanna centlivre #the busybody #the lucky chance #i think i enjoyed the men and the relationships in the lucky chance moreso than i did in the rover or the feigned courtesans #(the other two behn plays i've read so far) #i loved her characterizations of the women in both plays of course but i didn't quite feel myself in their situations #it was also quite more reliant on the same character archetypes #the modest one ends up with the selfless lovesick hero and the more innocent libertine one ends up w a reformed dashing rake. #and i'm ok w that right? like those tropes make sense. the plots and the witty dialogue are still enjoyable #but i find the lucky chance really upped the stake of the melodrama as well as the foils between the two main couples were more complex #you have one very melodramatic honest couple (leticia and belmour) who narrowly escape ruinous disaster #and then lawfully make their love official (most luckily BEFORE leticia has slept w fainwould and consummated the marriage) #and then you have the much more complicated and comical relationship between mr. gayman and julia fulbank #lady fulbank's marriage is done and done. no averting it. but she unabashedly carries a torch for him #she admits as much to her husband that she still loves him and she doesn't really care who knows #but she wants to be honorable to her marriage bc that's the lot she's chosen in life—his material comfort #and she does use that to the benefit of gayman when he's in financial ruin. #but her two stupid men. her lover and her husband. more or less work together to make her work against her own honorable wishes #she's compromised. and she SORT of gets what she really wants. she willfully foreswears the bed of her gross husband forever #and it's ambiguous whether or not she chooses to cuck him for gayman while he's still alive or what #very interesting ambiguous ending and i've never seen another character quite like lady fulbank in literature from that time #the lucky chance is worthy of far more study and interest than it's received. it's so funny and incredibly challenging #also. men don't hide in treasure chests enough anymore #more plots where men hide in treasure chests. thank you cymbeline by shakespeare and the lucky chance by behn. you guys got it
