I FIGURED OUT A WAY TO FUCKING MAKE THE IMAGE SMALLER FOR POSTING ON TUMBLR WITHOUT SACRIFICING THE ACTUAL QUALITY OF THE IMAGE OH MY GOD

Ok so, what I did is go into the clip studio paint file, make a new file, copy and paste the group in the original file, merge everything, get rid of the extra stuff outside of the canvas, and then make the flattened image smaller and crop the canvas. Once you have that, export it and you're done. This helps maintain the actual quality of the image and also helps shrink the file size down to something actually postable (if anyone has a better way of doing this please tell me)

[Edit]: Ok I guess posting something to Tumblr just naturally compresses the image a bit more somehow because I'm looking at it now and zooming in too much makes it a bit blurry so I'm still gonna have to futz around with image quality for future pieces oof

I'm so glad I figured out a way to do this because I like working on a big canvas so I can get as much detail in as I possibly can. Only problems are how laggy it gets while drawing lol.

I had an idea for a drawing with Reimu and Zanmu because I really like thinking about their potential dynamic a lot. I also wanted an excuse to draw Zanmu again but in my normal rendering style because last time I drew her she was in my more sketchy style with generally flat colours so I wanted to draw her again. Speaking of, looking at the sketch for this is a jumpscare that I never enjoy seeing, like, man am I glad I didn't use those for my final piece.

Also about her spear. I was originally gonna make it like the ones she had in game, but it kinda threw off the whole piece. It was too big, too blue, and too flat, so I just went "fuck it" and gave her a different one instead. My headcanon justifying this is that the ones she uses in game are for danmaku battles whereas in any other fight she just uses a proper yari, or she still uses the yari and just makes it all glowy to power it up, maybe both lol. I pulled as much inspiration as I could from Sengoku era spears, and even put in some blue into the decorative part of the spear and also added a little skull to pay tribute to the original spear. Also, in my research I saw some art of izanami and izanagi making japan and saw that the yari izanagi has had a little decorative tassley thingy on it so I took some inspo from that and just made it one of Zanmu's tassles (Idk when that art was from or if the spear was still accurate to Sengoku period Japan but hey, probably the same reasons Eirin puts little bow ties on her arrows, it's just for personalization purposes).

I love rendering hair and clothes so much omg, while I like the super curly hair Zanmu, the longer, wavier hair suits her better for this drawing (I imagine it only does that like how Ghibli characters hair moves when they feel angry lol). I love making Zanmu's hair all messy and crazy, as well as giving her grey hairs, this woman has aged like a fine wine. Also, if the hem on the ends of her sleeves, top of her shirt, and her pants look like gold to you, that's because it is! It's fairly light so she's not collapsing under the weight, but it's gold! (I don't care how impractical it is, it's just cool). Not the undershirt though, it's made of a gold fabric. I had a cute idea with Reimu's hair to make it have a red shine to it. I also changed up Reimu's outfit so it isn't just a blob of red. I like it a lot when Reimu's skirt and outfit is segmented into different layers, so I wanted to incorporate that.

I tried to draw their hands differently as well, but IDK how noticeable that is. Also, I am super happy with how the side profiles for the two of them turned out, I used to struggle a lot with how to make the side profile of a character actually look like the character, so I'm really happy that they actually look like themselves.

Also added in the tree and rocks in the background as an homage to Zanmu's character art in Touhou 19, just because I was getting kinda stumped on what to do with the background lol.

In terms of a story idea with Reimu and Zanmu, idk why but the potential plotline of Zanmu wanting to ascend to godhood is so fascinating to me. Like, it is very possible that if she just convinced everyone she was a god (which would be very easy for her to do), she would become one in a heartbeat. Also, if she were to become a god, with her ability to return stuff to nothing, could she hypothetically get similar abilities to (Jojo Part 5 spoiler btw) GER? Like, idk about the death timeloop stuff, but the concept has been haunting me every night as I have been trying to find loopholes in GER's ability for a while now ( for no reason in particular). Back to the main topic, I imagine that she would probably tell Reimu that if she were to become a god she would take over the Hakurei shrine since the god there might as well be dead, and Reimu just says to her, "Over my dead body bitch." Like, I have no idea how to summarize their dynamic but like, it's the type of hero-villain dynamic where the phrase "We're not so different, you and I" would definitely be a phrase said during a fight. I think that if another IN style game were to release, Reimu and Zanmu would be in a team together. They could also have an interesting mentor and pupil kind of dynamic. Can you tell that Zanmu has been charging my mind rent these part few months? Like, instead of living in my head rent free, she kinda just uno reversed the whole situation and now she's the one charging me rent. What happens if I get evicted from my own brain? Actually, scratch that, I don't think I wanna know.

Hecatia didn't know what had gotten into Junko, but she's angry, angrier than usual, which is really saying something. She's so angry that she's been quite literally been blinded by her fury, unable to see past the purple fox tailed light waves flowing from her eyes. Along with that, for some reason Hecatia couldn't shoot bullets. She was being chased by Junko in a hyper-aggitated state, and she had NO way to defend herself!

Her heart felt like it was going to explode from how bad her chest hurt. How long had she been running? For some reason she couldn't float either, just making it easier for Junko to try and catch her. She was breathing so heavily, yet there was never enough air. Between the running away and the sheer panic she felt, her whole body felt pained, suffocated, and weak. All of it felt sickening.

She didn't even know WHY Junko was chasing her, but that just made it scarier. Here she was, chasing you while fully furious, and she didn't know why or how to fix it. Talking to her wouldn't work, she already tried that. Did this involve Chang'e or something!? No, that didn't make sense, she would be chasing Chang'e if that were the case.

She didn't know where she was either. This place felt familiar, but she just couldn't figure out how. All she knew is that she needed to keep running so that Junko couldn't get her. The overbearing heat in this place would've caused her to stop a long time ago had she not been running on pure panic. All that mattered now was getting to that something she knew was there.

She was tripping over herself now, her body not being able to keep up anymore, it must've been hours at this point. No matter how many times she fell she HAD to get up again. She could feel Junko getting closer and closer, just mere seconds from getting too close. She knew she couldn't keep this up for much longer, but her brain just refused to let up. Everything was getting hazy now.

Dizziness was setting in and she wasn't running in a straight line anymore. The vision around the edges of her eyes were going dark. The pain was beginning to hurt too much. She couldn't take it. She fell down onto the surprisingly hot ground beneath her.

She knew Junko was slowly creeping towards her. She began with a slightly muffled laugh, her deep voice echoing all around this familiar yet dangerous place. She wanted to scream, to tell her not to hurt her, but all that came out were sharp, gasping breaths as she broke down into a frenzy of panicked tears. What was Junko going to do to her!? Junko began by grabbing her by the shoulders, lifting her off the ground, and started shaking Hecatia back and forth, laughing as she cried and squirmed as hard as she could.

"LADY HECATIA WAKE UP!"

Clownpiece was shaking Hecatia back and forth by the shoulders trying to get her to snap out of... whatever THIS was. At this point Hecatia was an unhealthy shade of pale, trembling REALLY hard, murmuring about something, breathing too hard, and she was really REALLY scared. It was as if Lady Hecatia was supposed to be waking up from a nightmare, but just couldn't wake up. All Clownpiece could do was keep trying to wake her, even if it felt pointless. Shaking her didn't seem to work either. Junko was in the other room dialing the number for Eientei. She was startled awake when she heard Hecatia crying, seemingly panicked. No matter how many times she tried to wake her up, she just couldn't, and now it's gotten worse. She wasn't so pale before, nor was she trembling like that, it looked like she could barely breathe! She began explaining the situation to Eirin on the other line. After that, all she could do was wait for the emergency services to show up. Was this a curse!? Something WORSE!? Junko was worried, but also angry, but not in her usual way. No, Junko was angry because of what was happening to Hecatia. It had nothing to do with Chang'e this time, and if it did she'd KILL her.

i can’t remember at all if i made a post sharing this exact thought, but for a long time now, I’ve always liked the thought of Mokou having a particular hangup about her status as a ‘noble’. The whole reason she has a grudge against Kaguya and set off on an angry trip up that mountain was because of a slight against her father, and I feel it’s natural for me to read that as the feelings of a young, really dignified noble who couldn’t stand such disrespect towards her high class family from some bamboo cutter’s daughter.

So over one thousand years later, ‘noble’ isn’t something anybody thinks when they look at Mokou, since she lives in a bamboo grove and probably eats dirt when she remembers to eat at all, and she herself probably doesn’t actively think about that aspect of her life or even remember much of that life anymore. But whenever it comes to interacting with the Eientei crew, especially Kaguya, all those old feelings and habits regarding her pride in the Fujiwara clan resurface like they never left, and she’ll be quick to point out that she’s of ‘inherently’ higher status on Earth than the supposed Kaguyahime is.

Reisen and Tewi probably just think Mokou is weird when she tries to claim to be of any pedigree, and Eirin maybe humours her? Actually I think its sweeter if Eirin one hundred accepts and understands Mokou’s words about how she remains a distinguished daughter of Fujiwara even if the clan no longer exists.

Just because its on my mind, I think Keine would encourage and support Mokou having this attachment to this aspect of her history, both because any history is worth remembering even if its only important to one person, and because Mokou otherwise doesn’t hold anything about herself in high regard.

But I think Kaguya would get heated and really invested whenever that kind of stuff is brought up, mostly because this always in turns makes Kaguya’s memories of being raised by her Earth family resurface like they never left, so she’s all too eager to argue that she has never done anything wrong in her life and anyone who can’t do her impossible tasks just suck.

So i guess to sum up, Mokou is just a hobo who lives in the woods, and has no delusions about that, but she hangs onto the pride of her family’s status even though its long in the past and will not hestiate to flaunt it for as long as she’s alive. And that in turn makes Kaguya feel like that ancient history on Earth still matters and is worth getting mad (and killing Mokou) for. And also Eirin likes Mokou because its nice to have someone remind them all of how they’re so ‘down-to-earth’ now.

Okay I’m ready to answer this ask now that I just got back from the beach myself lol. Field research…. 

FIRST and foremost i actually want to say i have thought about cute beach outfits for some of the characters! Maybe ill get around to drawing those one day but i also have cute pj ideas so? I guess itll depend on what i wanna draw when i get to it lol

Anyway the actual beach day ideas, and im going to do them for the whole guild not just the main four!

Venus organizes the trip as a reward for everyone for working so hard and they all travel together by train, one of the few occasions where the entire guild does so.

Mira would feed the seagulls even after everyone asked her to please STOP feeding the seagulls because theyve started to follow them. She says not to worry because she picked food that wouldnt be bad for them. Everyones like our concern is not seagull husbandry. And shes like well it should be. And keeps feeding the seagulls. 

Bella spends the entire day underneath a large black parasol, not even for protection from the sun its just part of her look. She also seems to visit the snack bar a lot.

Polaris mostly stays inside a little boat because she’s afraid she’ll freeze the water otherwise, and also just because she just likes being on the boat (Otherwise she’d stay on land lol). But she wants to get in the water too, and Saiph talks her into it by saying that even if she did freeze it a bit he could just melt it again anyway, and that theres no possible way she could actually freeze this much water anyway. It clears her head enough that she’s able to swim with no problems.

Al grew up by the beach and he can get mad sentimental about it, but not really in a way that takes away from the incredible amount of fun he has just being in that atmosphere. It’s like got lots of childhood memories tied to it for him so its a throwback in a way lol. Anyway while he muses on this saiph and polaris flip his inner tube over and they all have a laugh lol

Tondra falls asleep in the sand and Capella and Alcor bury them because theyre little shits like that.

Noctua builds a sand castle and Fornax uses their ethos to make it metal so it wont ever ever ever get knocked down <3 the quality of the sand castle is so-so, but like, hes six

Vela and Ran are pretty much both right in their element in the ocean. They also get an inflatable raft and act as if it’s actually a pirate ship. 

Saiph brings some mini grill supplies to do the cooking for everyone, this is a daunting task he works in shifts with Vesta.

Felis doesn’t like water, she just sits all day and sunbathes. Yes, because she’s a cat.

Pyxis forgets he’s old and throws out his back trying to show up young people surfing.

Baiduri and Nix v.s. Euphie and Imai volleyball game proving to be the athletic event of the century. Euphie and Imai win the first round but Baiduri and Nix win the rematch after sundown.

Regulus came to the beach only to relax and be pretty and hes actively using his ethos to repel sand from himself which is just unnecessary. 

Ain is somehow the lifeguard now and no one is sure how she managed to do that. Presumably she one-upped the other lifeguard so bad he quit. Her witch hat is now red with a white cross on it.

Shaula and Io are currently trying to break the world record for biggest cannonball splash. They don’t know what the world record is they’re just doing canon balls and guestemating if anyone in history has ever done a bigger one.

Itonda is taking Eirine and Lillie around the shore to collect seashells, but they keep being competitive about it and are getting increasingly annoyed when they ask whose seashell is better and he says “umm theyre both nice :)”

Both Juno and Bernard spend most of the day under the umbrella reading books or relaxing rather than going in the water. Bernard may eventually be swayed but Juno refuses to leave because “water is the #1 cause of drowning” < things normal people say.

Orion catches a fish in a bucket to show to Capella and then they must both solemnly let the little fishie go.

A jellyfish latches onto Lacerta but her ethos makes her immune to venom so she just hangs out with it on her leg. And everyones like um hey are you okay?? And shes like yeah why do you have a problem with Squishy? My friend Squishy? Get a life.

AND last but not least this was actually an idea from my friend @pakbet Al brings a stick and watermelons and a blindfold for suikawari, mira finds it super fun to run around and wack stuff and saiph might get lightheartedly competitive but at the end of the day io would annihilate them all entirely it would be no contest. that watermelon is juice now.

Misato (to herself): Having reached its limit as a colony of flawed and separate entities, Humankind is to be artificially evolved into a perfect single being. The Instrumentality Project... An ideal world... And to achieve this the Committee plans to use not Adam or NERV, but Eva. Just like Kaji predicted.

SCENE:  SEELE monoliths - Gendo and Fuyutsuki -----------------------------------

SEELE 01 (Keel): The promised time has come. With the Lance of Longinus now lost, complementation using Lilith is impossible. Our only hope is to proceed with EVA-01, Lilith's sole clone.

Gendo: While different from SEELE's scenario...

Fuyutsuki: Humans have existed to create Eva.  (ambiguous)

SEELE 09: We have no intention of giving up our human forms simply to enter the Ark called Eva.

Fuyutsuki: SEELE is mustering all of their forces.  5 to 1 odds... Not good.

Shigeru (off screen): No. 4 firewall breached!

Makoto: Locking the main database... Negative! We can't stop their invasion!

Maya (off screen): It's entering a deeper level! (on screen) Even the back-up circuit can't stop it!

Fuyutsuki (thinking): This is bad... Capture the MAGI system and you capture everything.

Makoto (off screen): We should just make it. Dr. Akagi is amazing, one more minute to the end of page 120... And only two-and-a-half more minutes until deployment of a primary firewall.

Misato (thinking): Just hacking MAGI? They're not going to let us off that easy... probably.

Fuyutsuki: MAGI is only the first skirmish. The bastards' objective is the direct take-over of headquarters and the two remaining Eva units.

Gendo: Yes.  With not only Lilith, but even Adam in our hands....

Fuyutsuki: No wonder the old men are so worried.

(MAGI displays turn green)

Maya: Hacking against MAGI has been stopped. (off screen) A Danang Type-B defense screen has been deployed. External access is impossible for the next 62 hours.

Misato (on phone): Listen Asuka. You must destroy all of the EVA series. I'll have Shinji there to help assist you soon.  Do your best. (changes lines - to Makoto) We can get to EVA-01 via emergency route No. 20, right?

Makoto (on phone): Affirmative.  We've secured three seperate power sources just in case. As long as you enter within three minutes, you can reach the No. 7 cage directly.

(Misato starts dragging Shinji)

Asuka: I have to destroy them all? Is she forgetting she's talking to a convalescent? Nine units in three and a half minutes... That works out to only 20 seconds apiece!

Misato (slumped against wall - labored breathing): Th... That should hold them off... for a while. I'm okay... It's not as serious... as it looks. (staggers to feet and opens gate) There's still power - We can make it.

(Misato pins Shinji against gate)

-Shinji... from here out you're on your own. You have to make the decisions by yourself - without anyone's help.

Shinji: I... I can't do it.  I just can't... I can't pilot Eva if it means I'm going to hurt or even kill other people. I have no right to do that. I thought that piloting Eva was my only choice... But I was just fooling myself. I don't understand anything - I'm not worthy to pilot Eva. There's nothing that I can do for other people! I've done terrible things to Asuka, and even killed Kaworu... (The Lance pierces the AT Field, then EVA-02's head... Asuka shrieks and EVA-02 powers down... Asuka clutches futilely at the controls)

But yes, that’s the end of the event. For those who did get themselves involved with the event, thank you so much for the interest. I always wanted to do an event with Eri, and this is what I came up with.

This event is also kind of meant to be an ‘ice-breaker’ kind of event, where even if you get the culprit wrong, you can still make threads and interactions from that, which is why Crescent says ‘no penalty for guessing wrong’.

With emphasis on Clue #7, the reason why I said not to look for writing style, is because Ruler is REALLY NICE in helping me refine my words into something suited for Hatate for the newspaper, with Eri’s intentions intact. I don’t have the password and ID to Ruler’s Hatate blog nor do I plan to ask for it, so he was the one sending asks on my behalf as Eri.

In fact, Ruler deserves equal, if not, more credit because he’s done ALOT into helping with my shenanigans, even tossing ideas here and there.

Chapter 11: Behind the scenes (Part 3)

Warnings: mentions of murder, parricide, trauma

Author notes: part 3 is there...! I hope you still enjoy it and that there is no decrease in... Quality... The genre has changed, since Ogawa has left the Mafia, but I hope it is as interesting as before...!

Kunikida had, unexpectedly, agreed to start our day later.

After our talk with the bartender, we had gone back to the mansion, where Yumiko-san, Kitaro-kun and Dazai had been waiting for us. There, I had told my friend about our investigation and our coworker had reassured the young woman about her son. We were progressing, after all. Then, she had had three rooms prepared for us as a way to thank us for our assistance. It had been a long time since I had last experienced sheets made of Egyptian cotton, set on a queen sized bed. I had grown unused to such comfort and a regular futon pretty much suited my tastes. Kunikida had decided to sleep in, to my greatest surprise, under the pretense of being exhausted. Why, it was not a pretense, but the fact he had accepted to bend his ideals to adapt his sleep schedule… It was unbelievable.

A knock interrupted my rest and I got out of the warm blanket to open my door. It was Dazai. A smile cracked my tired face and I let him in, tightening the shawl around my shoulders. Yumiko-san had landed me a cotton nightgown for the night, so I could sleep comfortably.

"I knew you wouldn't be asleep." He told me.

"You'd be an excellent detective…" I noted, ironic.

"Why, that's my job, now, after all." He chuckled "I came to help you sleep, Ogawa."

"Thanks…" I cracked a smile.

I laid back on the bed and he put his hand on my shoulder to cancel my ability.

"How did you find your first day among us?" He asked me, seeing my eyes were not closing.

"Mmh…" I hesitated "Strange. At first, I was motivated, and then… I met Taikin-san and my mind was disturbed by unpleasant thoughts about my family… Yosano-sensei got angry, Sakunosuke-kun disappeared and I ended up working with Kunikida… Oh, by the way, I have a video of him I want to show you…"

"So many things happened, right? He told me he had been taken aback by your strong rejection when he had yelled at you…"

"He must think I am crazy now…"

"On the contrary, he finds you more human." He disagreed "You aren't just a killer anymore in his eyes, but a real person with traumas… Well, that's what he said. Do forgive him for taking so long to realise you weren't a doll…!"

I laughed with him. At the very least, Kuninida was not prejudiced against me anymore. I felt we could get along a bit better from that day on.

"You'll keep working with him on the case. As you know, I can't be your partner for now, and Yosano-sensei… She feels you'll do better without her." He said.

"That's because she's a honest person, and I'm constantly lying to myself… She wants me to finally admit Ogawa Eirin loved me and I… I think I'm comforted by the thought she did not…." I admitted.

"At least, you're starting to accept it. That's not an easy task, and sensei doesn't know everything…" He whispered, gently.

"She doesn't know I committed an unrepairable deed… If I do admit I had a mother, I will have to face guilt for my entire life, and it is a feeling I dread…" I darted my eyes away.

"And yet, it is too late to go back… Crime and punishment… You, who committed a crime, have to face punishment in the form of endless guilt. No sentence could ever erase the burden you'll carry, not even death. The world condemned you to eternal regrets for the murder of the mother who loved you…" Dazai told me.

His voice was oddly soothing and I accurately felt my lower jaw tremble. Tears filled my eyes, and I hid my face under the blanket to sob, ashamed by the feelings I was experiencing. Sadness, regret, pain… Did I have the right to feel sorrowful, I, who had taken the life of an innocent woman…?

"I… I made a mistake…" I stuttered, regularly cut by sobs "But that simple mistake… The mistake of being blind… The mistake of not seeing… My mother's love… It cost her life… And I… I can't even fix it… I can't erase it… Because the dead won't ever come back…!"

"That's also your punishment… Don't tell me that, deep inside, you never knew she loved you… Don't tell me that you never wished for her affection… All the things you could have had as mother and daughter… All the love she could have given to you, had you killed only her husband… It is now forever unattainable for you…" He clumsily stroked my hair "She won't smile at you anymore, she won't talk to you anymore, and you cannot apologise to her anymore… By accepting your mistake, this is what you earned. No, rather, these are the consequences of your mistake, and you have to live with them…"

"I guess I'll just die, then… That burden is so heavy… I'm suffocating…" I sniffed, slowly calming down.

"You'll run away if you die… That's not your type…" I heard the smile in his voice.

"Dazai… Do you know why my ability is named The Sweet Appeals…?" I removed the blanket to look at him.

I planted my reddened eyes into his. After all this time, I was still looking for approval in his gaze… And he nodded.

"That's because… When I was a tiny thing, without even a consciousness, my mind was already filled with thoughts… I remembered, when I grew up, that it was frightening…" I paused to bite my lower lip "But, sometimes, other thoughts would come to dissipate them, like sunlight pierces through the thick clouds of rain, and I would feel overwhelmed by love…"

"That's why you cried, that day, too…" He recalled.

"I think…" My throat felt dry "I think it was my mother's… My mother's thoughts… I… Why must I realise now…? Why couldn't I see it before making that stupid mistake…?!"

"I don't know. None will ever know… It's not something you should be bothered about… More importantly, what are you going to do, now…?"

"I'm not sure… First, I have to find Sakunosuke-kun and solve the mystery of that bizarre family… Then, I'll talk to Yosano-sensei… And I'll improvise afterwards… Unlike Kunikida, I'm not good with plans…" I mumbled.

Crying had exhausted me and Dazai's nullification was affecting me. My eyelids were heavy but I tried to fight against them.

"... Why…? Why did you come and talk to me like that…?" I managed to ask.

"It's important to me that you're at peace with yourself."

"... Because I am your friend…?"

"Mmh…"

Liar. Maybe he truly saw me as his friend, but the reason for his care was never completely devoid of interest. The fact I would join the Agency… I felt it would benefit him, too, but I had no idea why. Not yet… Dazai felt completely different from the idealistic Kunikida who planned his life for years to come. Actually, they were similar, except my friend always seemed to prepare… Something else. It was not about his life, but I could sense he was getting something ready for the future. And I was a necessary pawn for him, which was why he needed me by his side. But I also needed him by my side… Which was why, as usual, I would comply without a word.

Every god with a cameo appearence in SSiB

After much deliberation, here it is. The lore post promised long ago. The translator notes for SSiB focus on locations of famous shrines of the mentioned deities and include a few mistakes, so I figured it’s worth writing a short introduction to each of the gods summoned or otherwise mentioned in this manga. The gods are arranged by chapter of first appearence; due to length and number of images, the list has been placed under a read more. Please do not take this warning lightly.

Chapter 1

Ama-no-iwato-wake no kami - one of the gods partaking in the “descent of the heavenly grandson” alongside Omoikane (whose Touhou counterpart is Eirin). Doesn't actually seem to be too prominent, sources available in English mention that he's a deity of gates (but not the only one and seemingly less versatile than a few other kami he shars this title with), and some Kojiki commentaries consider him an epiteth of Ame-no-Tajikarao, yet another participant of the descent, known for his prodigious strength, and for cooperating with Omoikane once before already – when Amaterasu refused to leave the cave Ama-no-iwato (which I assume is where the epiteth theory comes from). Based on Kanako’s comments from LoLK, it’s possible he’s a Lunarian in Touhou, like all the other Kojiki celestial gods.

“Lord Daikoku and his 180 children” - or rather Okuninushi, the ruler of Izumo and leader of the earthly gods in Kojiki. He's viewed as the gongen of the god of luck Daikoku, as both are gods of agriculture. All around nice guy, sometimes portrayed as unusually tall and strong, and hero of many myths, including these of white hare of Inaba and the god Sukuna-Hikona (both of whom are portrayed as his advisers from time to time; the scarecrow god Kuebiko plays this role in th Kojiki too).

Chapter 2

Chang'e needs no introduction, I think. Unlike almost everyone else here, she's not a Shinto deity.

Chapter 5

Sumiyoshi sanjin/daijin – the trio of Sokotsutsu no O no Mikoto, Nakatsutsu no O no Mikoto and Uwatsutsu no O no Mikoto. As the manga itself explains, they're the gods of sailing and safe voyage. They're brothers of the Watatsumi, who are, depending on the version, either three gods of the sea... or a single god, Ryujin, also known as Owatatsumi, who rules the seas from his Dragon Palace (and whose daughters the Watatsukis are based on). Curiously it seems they're also star gods, which certainly fits well with their role in SSiB plot (the stars they correspond to are the same ones Remilia names the rocket modules after, too). They're also associated with empress Jingu as she purportedly asked for their help before embarking on a military expedition against Korea.

Chapter 12

Gion – the former Gion shrine is known as Yasaka shrine today (no relation to Yasakatome). The enshrined deity is Susano-o, invoked to ward off disease. In the past he was often conflated with Gozu Tenno (who in turn was conflated with Matara-jin, but let's not go down this rabbit hole today), the most significant of the “epidemic gods” who acted as both sources of disease, presented as punishment in this context, and as saviors bestowing fast recovery and good health on the faithful. Like many similar shrines it was also involved in rituals meant to purify a certain class of restless spirits to make them act as deities protecting from diseases.

Chapter 13

Atago – the god of mount Atago, originally worshiped by Shugendo monks. He's a gongen (manifestation) of an aspect of Jizou, specifically “Shogun Jizou”, a tutelary deity of soldiers... and firemen (the idea is that Jizou can transfer injuries and suffering to himself). He is occasionally conflated with Kagutsuchi, the kami of fire killed right after being born (worth nothing Keiki's mythical counterpart is his sister). Other, more popular version, makes him a tengu who repented and became a protector of the pious human inhabitants of Mt. Atago; a variant of this legend claims said tengu was the true form of Nichira, a buddhist mentor of prince Shotoku (there's a Matara-jin connection here, as well, but let's save that for another day...)

Chapter 14

Honoikazuchi - one of the eight thunder gods created from pieces of Izanami's dead body in Yomi. They chase after Izanagi when his visit plan goes south, assisted by mysterious “hags of Yomi” (there are sources which claim the hags and thunder gods from this myth are what oni are based on in folklore, but such fanciful claims were only made by the “national learning” movement, which was seeking a way to purify culture from buddhist influences, and as such lack merit).

Kanayamhiko - a kami of metal, a tutelary deity of blacksmiths, miners, coalmakers, and so on (also, yet another sibling of Keiki's mythical counterpart, also “born” in the myth of Kagutsuchi). I assume he's summoned to change daggers into sand because early on in Japanese history save for some imported crafts all the iron was the result of a lengthy process relying on iron sand rather than ore. As a side note – most shrines related to blacksmith work enshrine a female deity named Kanayako, who's functionally identical to the Kanayamahiko from Nihon Shoki. Both historians and religious authorities appear to believe the gender of the deity was flipped at some point for unknown reasons. He had a slightly bigger cameo in WaHH.

Chapter 15

Amatsu Mikaboshi  - an enigmatic earthly god mentioned in the Nihon Shoki – a god of stars (which explains why he's invoked to deal with Marisa's spellcards). He resisted the land transfer and was severly punished for it. Many online sources portray him as some sort of “primordial evil,” which is a misunderstanding, perhaps originally caused by a peculiar string of events (though more likely by ignorance) – first Mikaboshi with conflated with Myoken (the pole star; guess which obscure figure referenced in Touhou which won't be discussed here was Myoken associated with?), then, during the Meiji reforms, Myoken was rejected due to being a syncretic deity, and many Myoken temples were converted into temples dedicated to Amenominakanushi, one of the only gods explicitly predating Izanagi and Izanami in the creation myth (seemingly there were no shrines dedicated to him prior to the dawn of the “national learning” movement, though). “Primordial evil” Mikaboshi portrayals, which cut the middleman (eg. Myoken), extrapolate the heavenly gods calling him an evil deity into him being a god of evil.

Ishikori-dome – a tutelary kami of mirror-makers. Yet another associate of Omoikane, both in the myth about luring Amaterasu out of a cave, and then during the descent of the heavenly grandson. According to the myths she's responsible for creating the Yata no Kagami, one of the imperial regalia. Following the LoLK logic (“Lunarians are like the celestial gods,” eg. The Kojiki gods who descended from the heavens and subjugated the earthly ones) she might be a Lunarian.

Chapter 16

Ame no Uzume – a kami of dawn and dance. She too is an associate of Omoikane, partaking in getting Amaterasu out of a cave (which her SSiB appearence echoes) and in subujgation of the earthly gods during the descent of the heavenly grandson (she marries Sarutahiko, one of the rulers of the earthly gods – seemingly of a different group of them than the Izumo gods following Okuninushi). As above, probably should count as a Lunarian in Touhou.

Amaterasu – does she need an introduction? The central deity of Shinto, the ruler of them all, the sun, the progenitor of the imperial family. Simply put, a god too significant to show up in Touhou for longer than two panels. She's basically here as an extension of Ame no Uzume's myth.

Chapter 17

Oomagatsumi – ritual impurity given form, one of the two basically identical kami created while Izanagi was undergoing ritual ablutions after returning from Yomi, the land of the dead.

Chapter 18

Izunome – as far as I can tell, making her a shrine maiden is ZUN's own invention. In the Kojiki, she's born when Izanagi purifies himself after escaping the land of the dead, and that’s quite literally where her role both starts and ends. She seemingly has no shrines today, though Japanese wikipedia mentions an Amaterasu shrine which in the past held some festival related to “Izunome-jin”. I'm pretty sure she's here because she and Oomagatsumi are part of a single myth, and represent a specific instance of pollution and its immediate removal.

Chapter 19

Takeminakata – that's just Kanako. LoLK confirmed it, if anyone still had any doubts by then. There are dozens of versions of the myth, it honestly deserves its own post, so I won't discuss that here.

A BROTP I have with said character: Reisen and Tewi naturally; I think she’d also get on well with Akyuu, 

A NOTP I have with said character: It takes a lot to sell me on anything Terumoko.

A random headcanon: She’s had someone or another prepare basically anything in Gensokyo as food throughout her history. Yes, even the poisonous things; it’s not like she’ll see long-term consequences and it’d be ever so interesting, you see.

General Opinion over said character: Very very entertaining catalyst for Lunarian antics, or as someone bouncing off all the various unusual things in Gensokyo from a different outsider perspective. Hard to go wrong with her.

Sexuality Headcanon: Definitely pan because I’m a kinnie 👀

Gender Headcanon: Female A ship I have with said character: TeruMoko of course ♥ The eternal OTP. A BROTP I have with said character: Kaguya is like... friends with everyone, so it’s really hard to pick a single character. Interactions with any character have such good potential with her... I guess lately I’ve been thinking a lot of Kaguya and Merry. Sounds really weird but it started because of a Kaguya aesthetic/RP blog I have who occasionally interacts with a Merry aesthetic/RP blog that Asa has. Since then, she’s written a small fic of them meeting. We’ve kept talking and brainstorming about other interactions between them ever since.

(Honorable mention to Sumireko, introduced to Kaguya by Mokou. The thought of the three hanging out is really cute. I’ll talk more about Mokou and Sumi in the Mokou one though.) A NOTP I have with said character: Mentioned this on the Eirin post, but bad depictions of EiTeru are... really annoying (and sadly rampant.) Like Eirin blushing and acting like a school girl is the most far removed thing from my vision of Eirin, it kills me instantly every time I see it. Though good EiTeru can be nice, so it definitely doesn’t qualify as NOTP, just the closest thing to it. A random headcanon: She talks without contractions. Is Chang’e. General Opinion over said character: I love her and she has always been goals in a very positive way. The way she acts and thinks. I feel like I’ve become more and more like her over the years and it soothes my kinnie heart.

Mokou

Sexuality Headcanon: Not really interested in anyone other than Kaguya. Gender Headcanon: Female A ship I have with said character: TeruMoko of course ♥ The inevitable ship. A BROTP I have with said character: OH boy. Futo, Sumireko, Mamizou.. Since I talked about Futo already, Sumi and Mamizou. Mamizou is known to hang out in the outside world sometimes, so this means Mokou has two outsider friends... Which makes the logical conclusion that they bring her out sometimes. So imagine Mokou trying really hard to understand and fit in in the outside world but completely failing. Being amazed at every little thing.. Then comes back and brags to Kaguya about it. Kaguya, who rarely experiences this, feels a tinge of jealousy that she didn’t get to see these things herself.

A NOTP I have with said character: MokoKene :^) This kills the Lori. A random headcanon: I guess this could go under BROTP too, but it’s way less based on canon and more purely HC so. Probably meets Junko at some point and, along with the Kaguya = Chang’e HC, well... they team up to kick her ass. 👀 General Opinion over said character: Best girl.

Sorina:

Soma is the one who is seen often dropping off and picking up their kid at school.

Would say, “’Sup kiddo!” to greet his kid when he picks them up.

He has an adorable secret handshake with their kid and will hold up his palm or fist which his kid would respond to each time they separate or meet at the door of the class.

Soma is very interactive with the kid’s teacher. Would even crack a joke or two. He also knows their names, but wouldn’t bother attending a parents workshop bcs his schedule doesn’t allow him to. And lbr here, he would sleep through it.

Erina, on the other hand, rarely drop off or pick up their kid. But boy, when she shows up, the world stops. Everyone at school would stare in awe of her presence and grace (If you’ve seen Blake Lively on A Simple Favor, you’d know her vibe).

Makes people wonder how someone as poise as her would settle down with Soma who is the opposite.

Often smiles and thank the teachers, also hopes their kid hasn’t cause any trouble.

Lol you think her schedule would allow her to attend parents workshop?

If their kid is performing at school though, Soma and Erina would take a half-day off to see it and be proud parents. They would take adorable pictures together with their kid dressed in elephant costume.

They too would take a half-day off for Parent-Teacher Conference to see how their kid has developed through the semester.

From these events, people know that Soma and Erina actually complement each other.

Oh, and have I mentioned their kid always has the best lunch?

Takumegu:

Despite being a CEO of her successful ryokan and restaurants, when dropping off and picking up their kids, Megumi looks just like a humble housewife who is lovely to everyone around her

Bows to teachers a lot of times, saying thank you a million times for looking after their kid

Megumi is a very generous parent. Would bring extra homemade cookies or onigiri for their kid to share to the whole class– she always teaches their kid the good of sharing the love.

She sometimes invite the teachers to her and Takumi’s restaurants’ event or a complimentary stay at her ryokan during summer break.

Takumi drops off and picks up their kid equally often, sometimes they do it together (this kid is surrounded with so much love it’s insane).

Nearly every female teachers have a lowkey adoration for him because of how gentle, polite, and soft spoken he is. And to top those things off, he is G O R G E O U S.

Takumi likes to give their kid a piggyback ride to class, while Megumi simply hold their kid’s hand and give them a kiss on the cheek.

They would basically do anything for their kid. If their kid is performing, Takumi would bring out his camera,  take gorgeous pics and record a video of their kid. Unlike Sorina who only take half-day, takumegu would take a day off, shut of their phones, and just enjoy a proper family day.

They also take turn attending parents workshop regularly, though they occasionally go outside to make a phone call or two, they are trying to make a good parenting team.

Eirin:

Guess who is the worrywart parent? Yep, you all know it.

Eishi drops their kid at school with a big kid’s backpack filled with all the necessities like jacket, sunscreen, meds, extra snacks, two sets of clothes, a pair of sandals, a pack of diapers, and a drop of Jesus’ blood, obviously.

He never forgets to tell the teacher, “Can you please make sure to apply an extra layer of mosquito repellent before he plays outside and if he’s got a mosquito bite make sure to apply the essential oil I’ve put in his bag. Please don’t forget to peel off his apple before he eats them but please leave 0.5 centimeter of the stalk so he can–”

Eishi also takes parents workshop seriously. Always sits in the front row and actively asking a lot of question also shares parenting tip to the other parents.

Meanwhile, Rindou besides being the chill parent, is unbothered about parents workshop. “Google exists for a reason??”

And if she’s the one dropping their kid to school, all the teacher would find in his bag is a lunchbox and an extra t-shirt.

She would be the one encouraging their kid to play in the mud and jumping really high on the trampoline. She sometimes would leave him hanging on a monkey bar while she plays Candy Crush. Yes, she would want their kid to grow up fearless and take risks.

Eishi always has the urge to protect their kid. He’d want their kid to grow up cautious with precision.

This different parenting style caused them to argue in front of the teacher during Parent-Teacher Conference, blaming each other for her carelessness and his overprotectiveness.

But oh, they were so proud when they see their kid perform and took on a leading role as a little Indiana Jones.

Ryoali:

Alice is that mom who would insta-story their kid walking out of the class and reaching out to her arm when school’s out.

“Cmooon, say bye to your teacher, sweetheart! We’re not going to the grocery shop until you do so~”

Yes, she may show up at their kid’s school looking all flashy with faux fur coat and gold hoop earrings, but she’s actually pretty down to earth.

Despite her tight schedule, Alice is actually the class/PTA mom. She spreads information to the other moms, and will happily reply to teachers’ chat with emojis and calling them ‘Loves’.

She would follow their kid’s teacher on Instagram and tag them in their kid’s pictures or videos.

She skips PTA meetings most of the time and would rely on other PTA mom though.

Also wouldn’t bother attending parents workshop because she thinks she got it all handled.

Ryo is the dad that only shows up when their kids perform on a larger scale and during Parent-Teacher Conference.

If it was Ryo who drops off their kid tho, he doesn’t bother socializing with the teachers. He would just be rustling their kid’s head and said, “Bye. Mommy will pick you up.”

But behind his cold exterior, he would be the one helping their kid with homeworks or practicing the dance or the song before the kid’s performance.

He also always make sure their kid eats well and balanced with delicious bentos he has packed.

Akisako:

Hisako is PTA mom #2 Alice always rely on because Hisako always attend the meetings.

No one knows how she managed to do PTA responsibilities while having businesses to run, but she does it so well.

Often times, if Akira is the one to drop off their kid, Hisako would be the one to pick her up and vice versa. It all depends on their schedules.

Akira would teach their kid to be independent. He would encourage their kid to walk to class from the front gate on their own at a very young age. Hisako would at least say bye at the stairs.

Akira doesn’t interact much with the teacher, but would converse every now and then if being asked if it concerns their kid.

Hisako is generally more warm and would tell the teachers if their kid has been telling stories about them.

But if their kid comes home with a scar, she could panic and text the teacher a bunch of question like what/who caused it, if it had been treated, and if their kid shows any signs of other discomfort, etc.

She’ll shut up if she has got a satisfying answer though.

Akira would be the one attending parents workshops and actually pays attention. Not that Hisako wouldn’t, but she gets distracted easily when her phone beeps once. They often attend it together.

They love watching their kid performs. Hisako would sit in front of the stage with other mom and recording every move while Akira just stand or sit proudly in the back enjoying how cute their kid is.

Eirin’s Astronomical Entombing’s animation is on of my favorite animation in the entire game. The music is also great and see how she opens up her stage with the fake moon out of nowhere and summon some huge energy blast to end you in her space time. Mountain of faith would’ve been a contender if its later part of the animation wasn’t so lackluster. But that’s from FMW2 so can’t be helped.

TBH at first I didn’t even notice that it was opening up an alternate space dimension because that’s kind of what her stage background looks like anyway (which makes sense, since the stage basically is her attack), but it’s much more obvious in other stages.

But when I realized that she was trapping you with the explosion in an isolated subspace, quite literally “burying you in the stars,” I really changed my mind on it.

Actually, I wanna talk about Dynamic Kill animations now. Going back to Eirin:

Astronomical Entombing ends with her closing the subspace behind her. Leaving behind not even a corpse. But this only happens if her target actually dies from the attack (don’t worry, this isn’t Fire Emblem, they don’t die permanently). Otherwise they just get hit by the explosion and take damage normally.

This is one of the more subtle ones, but “the animation is different if the attack finishes off their target” is a pretty cool feature they borrowed from SRW. Other favorites of mine:

Yuyuko unplugs the TV when the player dies, a rather horrifying way of portraying the sudden finality of death.

Medicine doesn’t even understand death, which somehow makes it worse.

Murasa drags you to a watery grave.

Er... that’s pretty grim I guess. They’re not all morbid, sometimes it’s just like the character does a little pose afterward or, like, Shinki carries you away in her arms. My favorites/least favorites are actually Mokou, since without the Dynamic Kill animations you don’t even see her regenerate her arm that just exploded from punching you (no video link because BlitzBlast turned the music into a joke, which annoys me).

Anyway, animations are good.

A New Dream Medicine for Modern Gensokyo

Good news for the stressed contemporary youkai

Gensokyo's master of medicine, Eirin Yagokoro ([self-proclaimed] human) has developed a new dream medicine for modern troubled people that lets one "enjoy sweet dreams".

The name of this new drug is Butterfly Dream Pill. It takes its name from the dream it induces, where one becomes a butterfly and enjoys oneself. A few doses of the red pill before bed will prevent nightmares and create an enjoyable dream for a good night's sleep. Yagokoro explains the specifics of what led to the development of this medicine:

"See, in Gensokyo, everyone are either youkai or demons or ghosts or such, so they're all fit and robust. There isn't really much of a demand for medicine for physical illnesses. These kind of beings are comprised mostly of spirit. Therefore, if they need any sort of care it would be for their mentality. The origin of the dream medicine was sparked by this realization."

The Dream World is another self, says Yagokoro. If the dream is too enjoyable, there's a chance that the real world and the Dream World may switch places, so one must be careful of overdosing.

"The medicine itself has existed since ancient times. In the past, there were many humans who took the medicine and could not return from the Dream World. In this new formula, I've weakened the potency and reduced the side effects."

However, there are people who say that good things happen in nightmares as well. For those people who enjoy a little thrill in their dreams, the 'Butterfly Dream Pill Nightmare Type' is also available. This one is a black pill, and when taken, causes nightmares to occur.

Eirin: Just a little here and there. This minor newspaper doesn’t seem to have much exposure.

Aya: I’m trying my best to improve that.

Eirin: In which areas is this newspaper distributed?

Aya: Most of those who want the latest news in Gensokyo the fastest are reading it.

Eirin: Gensokyo is full of those who don’t care what happens in the world as long as their personal surroundings are fine. Exactly where would there be anyone who needs information enough to get a newspaper?

Aya: ... Mostly fellow Tengu.

Eirin: So it’s like a school newspaper.

Aya: There are other readers. For example, Kourindou’s owner is a loyal subscriber.

Eirin: He’s not the target for Butterfly Dream Pills. I doubt he’s worried about nightmares.

Aya: By the way, what kind of people buy Butterfly Dream Pills?

Eirin: I can’t release personal information for the sake of privacy.

Aya: I don’t think who bought what is really personal information.

Eirin: That might be so. Since the purchase and selling of things is a system humans established, prevention of the flow of information reduces the efficiency of the system. Without information, a healthy market isn’t possible, and shady businesses can get away with cheating. In the first place, the reason merchants say “I won’t leak your information” is because it’s just another form of advertisement, to appeal to their customers. I’m guessing what you’re trying to say that unless information is more open, the only ones making a profit will benefit, yet they do not realize in doing so, the whole system will collapse eventually, right?

Aya: Well, no, I didn’t say that much. But I do agree that information shouldn’t be hidden.

Eirin: Like how in the past, saying “Dat ting? Da lady o’er der bought ‘em all jest now, don’cha know.” and making the whereabouts of the products as clear as day, they may have been hoping for a possible economical development.

Aya: Why the accent? But really, let’s get back on track. You don’t seem like you want to tell me about your customers, after all.

Eirin: There’s the puppeteer from the forest, for one.

Aya: I’ve tried the Butterfly Dream Pill myself, but I don’t really understand the effect.

Eirin: Huh? Is that true?

Aya: I did dream of becoming a butterfly flying gracefully through the air, but whether that’s an enjoyable dream or not is...

Eirin: You seem to be carefree, after all. You weren’t having any problems with your dreams in the first place, right? You’re not mentally exhausted to need therapy.

Aya: That’s also true, but... I guess what I mean to say is there wasn’t any sense of speed. I haven’t flown that slowly since my feathers grew.

Eirin: So that’s what you meant. Well then, for you, please give the Nightmare Type a try. It’s so fast it might even be enjoyable.
