Been working on a personal OC/worldbuilding site bc my toyhouse has gotten somewhat unwieldy and wow wow wow it's so satisfying to have this much flexibility and control over my html/css and my file structure and the way I connect different pages and show the connections between things ^^

It's going slow, but mostly because I'm a slow writer and I want all my little guys to have at least a paragraph-long summary explaining in loose terms Their Whole Deal...

But overall it's really nice to feel like my OCs are more integrated into a single continuous world!! I put a lot of thought into who fits where before I started, and so far it's really paid off xD

I feel like it's maybe pointing out the obvious but I can't stop thinking about how important the "be my bodyguard" scene (or "red scene" as Mile and Apo fondly call it) is. It's a scene that I think has been coming for a long time; something that we have needed for a long time, and I really loved how they did it.

Things they haven't said to each other, and secrets they've kept—and the trust issues created by association—have been at heart of their conflicts throughout the entire series: in episode 5, Kinn is not honest with his feelings for Porsche, resulting in disaster; in episode 7, the fact that Kinn hasn't told Porsche about Tawan creates a rift between the two of them, pushing Porsche further towards Vegas and affecting Kinn's trust issues; in episode 9, Porsche listening in on Kinn because he doesn't trust him is the reason why Kinn has to lock him up—and Kinn's failure to communicate his plan with him both in ep 9 and early in episode 10 add to this conflict. Even in episode 12, that argument about the fact that Kinn hadn't been honest with Porsche about why he hired him is rooted in the same issue: honesty, or the failure to share it, with each other.

And this secret in particular—one so alarming that it made Porsche throw up a physical touch boundary between the two of them, eliminating their main form of communication—is key, because it has affected Porsche's entire life, and Chay's life by association. It has been lurking throughout their entire relationship, as yet unresolved. But Kinn's character growth, and their relationship growth, means that they can now resolve it—through words rather than sex, and the promise of honesty, and the clear signal that Kinn is sending of choosing Porsche by moving out of the main family house to live with him.

And so I love that they chose—that Kinn chose—to give us this scene here, back where it all started. Back where that first lie stemmed from. In episode 6, we saw them fall into a river, which washed away their hostility towards each other, creating a fresh slate for them to build their relationship on in the freedom of the woods: here, Kinn is intentionally making that choice to wipe things clean himself, rather than being nudged into it by circumstance. And just like they found freedom in that ability to be themselves in the woods, this is also bringing them freedom—the freedom of not having to hide anything from each other anymore.

Kinn's line "there will be no more secrets between us" sums up this scene—and everything that has been building up to it—perfectly. (Also, in the trailer this line is layered over a shot of them in the woods—following what I said above: nice!) I actually think that, in hindsight, trust has not been as much of an issue since they resolved it in the episode 7 bathroom scene as communication has been—they have had conflict, yes, but most of it has been around not telling each other things, rather than not trusting each other (I have more thoughts on this if anyone is interested!). So this line about no more secrets is not only about trusting each other, but more importantly about communication and total honesty—of their feelings, and of their selves.

In my mirrors and reflections meta I've often talked about how the fact that we still see them reflected together has been a clue that they still have yet had to resolve this honesty issue—that there have still been things lurking below the surface. In episode 10, I pointed out that their reflection in the pool was small, blurry: they were getting closer to that resolution.

There are still two episodes left, but I think they've reached it. They've broken down that final barrier, and started being fully open and honest with each other—and now when they have the Pool Scene we will see them in the place where they were once reflected, breaking up those reflections and any lingering doubts with their real, true selves. (And if we do get more reflections of them together, then I will simply be wrong, and that's okay! Also I know we still have the "I'm on your side" scene coming but I am feeling more and more like that might be a misdirect from the trailer and will be largely external and not related to their honesty issues. But watch this series prove me wrong as it has time and time again!)

So when Kinn asks Porsche, "Be my bodyguard," he's not only starting over again with the same words he used all the way back in episode one: he's also asking for them to be each other's, for complete two-way transparency and honesty and trust, and to stay with him—to choose him. And Porsche responds by affirming the love they have for each other, cementing that promise. It's nothing short of a marriage proposal. I can understand why it was Mile's favourite scene, because I think it might be one of mine too.

After the pieces are cut from you, after the silence has fallen and you're tasked with the protection and continued survival of a child you are wholly unprepared to raise, you have a choice to make.

It is a choice that you've been backed into.

You have a support system, you have a family. You have old friends and lifelong partners. One of them is struggling to keep his pieces in place, the other is struggling to rebuild the cracked foundation of a cursed home. You can't reach out to either of them, not because of their own struggles.

The choice you have to make is going to dirty your name further, and already people are going to be dragged down by the filth the world now sees you covered in.

You weren't dirty by choice before. The choice is going to make the difference.

You choose your words carefully, you choose who you contact even more so. You choose patience and surveillance. You choose a mask and wear it in place to meet with another masked man. You choose the friend who is a viper in human skin.

You choose to look as if you've fallen on impossibly hard times, as if your friends have abandoned you, as if you struggle to support the needs of a child. It makes you look like prey to a predator. You are a wolf in the clothes of a wounded sheep. The blood attracts the predator you hunt, and you let him get close.

You let him twist himself into you, as he looks for any threat you may carry. You let him open your rib cage to look for danger and poison and he finds none but the poison he's left there himself. You live with that poison for as long as it takes to gather your information. You pretend you've forgotten the law you worked so hard to represent. You pretend you've forgotten those you befriended.

You make a choice, and the viper comes into the trap.

You make the choice for seven years, and the trap finds its bait. The trap snaps shut on the viper's throat.

You use other hands, other claws and teeth, to accomplish your hunt. You and the viper are no longer so separate. It takes a delicate hand to keep from being snared in the same trap, but you still cause collateral damage.

You made that choice.

And even when the work is done and the viper is removed, there is still the poison he left behind. In you, in the system, in the damage. Your choices cannot be taken back. You can be given the clothes you once wore, the badge you once upheld, the job you were removed from, but the person who wore all those is gone. The choice was a sacrifice of that person, and what's left has to pick up the pieces.

I wanted to ask you a couple questions about the school structure for the Veil if you can talk about it. It seems like the academy and university are fairly closely linked but do they operate basically the same as our hs/uni do? Like picking a major/trade kind of thing. I think I saw that Audric was listed as a post grad but still a trainee so is there reaper uni classes then a sort of practicum afterwards? I hope this makes sense. I’ve tried to write this ask 5 times now

So, I spent some time rooting around my files, because a long while back I drew a map of the campus grounds for the spire...but now I can't find it, so i wonder if it's one of the unfortunate victims that got jumbled when I moved to my new machine. Ah well. But yes! They're quite literally linked, since that's why I even went looking for the file. The two campuses are side by side and share certain amenities.

so these are some super rough unfinished concept things from my files, but this ought to at least show the physical setup. There's a primary school within the spire as well. Somewhere in there. I haven't decided yet, not that it ultra matters, so let's just say it's somewhere in the middle. As for how they operate-- You got it already, more or less! The schools themselves are famous for their reaper program, having been founded by the same scholar who founded the organization itself. Of course, with Veil attuned students being one of the rarer attunements, the island's --uh, resources , to put it kindly, and the focused study needed to train those who would take on the veil's blight, the schools have a bounty of academic wealth to impart on hopeful magi graduates as well as those seeking to become eidolons. So there's several fields here that will gain a shining education in their field if they put in the hard work (... And, strangely enough, they have a pretty good classic lit department.) Using reapers as an example, the path would be as follows: Enrollment to secondary school and all basic curriculum classes as normal > attunement > undergrad prep courses for the reaper program if it's accepted (most do) > first stage of graduation undertakes the Eidolic Aperature (Uncap Ceremony, breaking the limits of magi's natural magic limit) > If successful, second stage will complete the full graduation ceremony and go on to university > training /studying intensifies, focusing more on study (the nature of liminal tears, wraith winds, corruptions, and the tools reapers operate) and choosing which field they will pursue in the program, while all are given a basic training course in specific magics and hunting techniques that ramps up until > completing the four year program, grad students engage in full trade training, working as the island's main service of hunters, scouts and sentries. Audric is currently in the final stage of this, hence the gossip quoting him as "Just a student, but practically the real deal." Primary school is fairly standard as can be, but it's a bit more fun to learn those classic subjects when you have the fun of enchanted textbooks and a kind, quirky siren for a teacher who plans fun aquatic fieldtrips. At least she tends to be everyone's favorite (She's also a grad level professor who works specifically with Aetherbiology majors and Reapers in their first years of university. She's one of Audric's favorite professors-- if not his top favorite.) Lichgate in general is something of an outlier for how its schools operate, though. It isn't exactly standard practice to smash them together at the very top of a spire, or to offer such an exacting focus from the moment of enrollment (on in some certain cases, attunement) until you've essentially gained your equivalent of a doctoral/masters. The location sitting right on the Veil's most unstable liminal tear is to thank for that-- and of course, even if you don't care as much about your education, it somehow manages to be the safest campus. As long as you follow the rules, obey curfew, don't wander off, and do exactly as your professors say during any off-spire excursions, especially.
