We've been friends many years but I've never thought to ask; Top 10 gay OTPs?
1.) Ian & Mickey (Gallavich) - Shameless us
Tumblr media
What can I say about these two that we haven’t already said about them?! They are my absolute all-time favorite couple ever! Gay or straight. They perfectly complement each other, they love each other on a level I feel like I’ve never seen before (and I have watched a lot of tv/movies), they’re like a comedy duo, they support each other, understand each other better than anyone else ever will, they fell in love as kids, they bring out the best in each other, and they’re each other's best friend. I’m a sucker for opposites attract, who are also best friends. Gallavich really fits that bill. I wish they didn’t have to struggle so much to get their happiness, but I’m happy they finally got it. When they got married, it felt like the biggest victory ever! We went through those years of struggle with them, rooted for them, mourned for them when John Wells let Noel go after season 5. So much has tried to keep these two apart, even real-life circumstances tried to keep them apart. The chemistry between these two characters and between Cameron and Noel was so powerful, they were brought back to the show. That kind of thing doesn’t happen very often. When an actor leaves a show, they don’t usually come back as a series regular, let alone two actors who have already left the show. It felt like a miracle! I will never forget getting the news that Noel was coming back from you @luckyshazmrsmonaghansblog I was crying with happiness bc we wanted this for so long and I never believed we would get to see both Cameron and Noel back on the show. Or that they would get their happy ending outside of a jail cell. Especially after Cameron left the show in season 9. With their return we got a wedding, an entire season of them as a married couple, we got to see them dance with each other twice, we got them singing together, we got to see them start a lucrative business together, we got to see them free and happier than we’ve ever seen them before, and we got to see Terry get what he deserved after putting them through hell. We are only halfway through season 11, but I already feel so fulfilled with this extra time with gallavich that we were never supposed to have. JW tried to take that away from us. I will never understand why, but he failed. I am not surprised this is the one I wrote the most about. I can go on and on about gallavich!
2.) David and Patrick - Schitt’s Creek
Tumblr media
This was everything I ever wanted to see onscreen, where there was zero homophobia. The pansexual character didn’t need to have a big coming out or tell everyone in the town of his sexual orientation, except his best friend. The gay character had a coming out with parents who loved and accepted him for who he is and was only upset that he felt he couldn’t tell them sooner. I dreamt of a day where I could see this kind of representation onscreen. The casual treatment of their sexuality was so refreshing and something I’ve been waiting for. There is no darkness or huge struggle they had to overcome to be together or a sad ending for them. They were allowed to be together without the major conflicts most LGBTQ characters have to go through. Once David made the first move Patrick was comfortable allowing himself to fall for David and start a relationship with him. He was so sure of his feelings for David after that first kiss, he never looked back and I loved that. They had such an adorable love story. Truly one I have been waiting to see for so long between two LGBTQ characters. They made me smile every time they were on screen. They are another of my OTPs that are exact opposites who complement each other perfectly. Patrick was welcomed into David’s family and blended in with them so well, even when he and David had very different upbringings. Patrick serenading David with Tina Turner and then Mariah Carey at their wedding is one of the most romantic things I have ever seen!
3.) Holt and Kevin - Brooklyn Nine-Nine
Tumblr media
Captain Holt and Kevin are strange men on their own but together they are the perfect pair. They get each other in a way no one else does. The best part is their adorable fur baby, Cheddar! They seriously make the cutest family! I was so nervous when they went through a rough patch for a while because I didn’t want them to split up. Thankfully, they made it through and are still going strong!
4.) Will and Vince - Will & Grace
Tumblr media
On the show's first run, Will and Vince were in a serious relationship and Vince was Will’s longest relationship on the show. They broke up a few times but were together by the series finale. The two reunite during the funeral of Will's father. There was a time jump on the series finale. Though I didn’t love everything about the last episode, I did love the fact that Will and Vince had been together for 20 years and raised a son together, who was conceived through in vitro fertilization with a surrogate. After the time jump, nearly twenty years later, their son goes to college and meets Grace's daughter, whom he would eventually marry. Though I wasn’t happy with the fact that Will and Grace didn’t stay close over the years, it did allow for their kids to one day meet, fall in love, and get married. I did like that outcome out of the finale. My family and I used to watch the original show, but we refused to accept or watch the 2017 revival because they completely changed everything from the original series finale. The second I found out they were changing everything; I knew I couldn’t watch it. They even wiped the existence of their kids from the first series finale. The revival was an attempt to cash in on the reboot craze and I wasn’t happy about that already, but even more so when they were going to break up one of my OTPs for easy money. Bobby Cannavale, who played Vince, has become even more famous since starring in Will & Grace. So, I already figured he wouldn’t be back for the show as a regular, but I know he did guest star. I won’t accept the revival and to me, Will and Vince stayed together, and their son married Grace’s daughter. THE END!
5.) Albert and Armand - The Birdcage
Tumblr media
Miss Albert and Armand were the earliest gay couple I remember ever watching onscreen when I was eight years old. I have watched this movie more than I can count over the years. It is a family favorite that we quote often. Their son is planning to marry a girl whose father is in politics and is very conservative. They have to hide the fact that he has two gay fathers for one night, but everything goes awry, and comedy ensues. Nathan Lane and Robin Williams give a wonderful performance without resorting to using the stereotypes that are often used on gay characters, especially back then. It’s a classic!
6.) Stefon and Seth - Saturday Night Live
Tumblr media
Okay, hear me out on this one! They’re not the most conventional OTPs on my list, but I really do love them so much! Stefon started doing a correspondent segment on Weekend Update on SNL. The first time Stefon came on, he flirted with Seth Meyers. The second he did I was like ooh they would make a cute couple! Stefon the wild party guy and Seth the serious news anchor. It was a match made in heaven for me. Before Seth Meyers left SNL to do Late Night with Seth Meyers, Bill Hader came back to play Stefon for Seth’s last episode. I didn’t expect what happened next to happen at all! They gave Seth and Stefon the ending that I haven’t even gotten from some actual scripted shows. I never expected Stefon and Seth to have this big ending, but I could not be happier that they did. I’m posting the link to the six-minute skit/ending and I hope it works. It’s worth watching. Though the video says it’s Stefon’s farewell it was really Seth’s farewell episode.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rj-wYWMdWNk
7.) Mr. Simmons and Peter - Hey Arnold!
Tumblr media
Anyone who grew up watching this show already knew that Mr. Simmons, Arnold’s teacher, was probably gay. It was hinted at in the Thanksgiving episode. Arnold and Helga visit Mr. Simmons on Thanksgiving at his house and his family and “friend” Peter are there. Mr. Simmons mother says she didn’t know Peter was coming to dinner and Peter responds with the infamous line “There’s a lot of things you don’t know.” When Mr. Simmons mom tries to get him to take a woman friend to the ballet, he says he loves the ballet and Peter gives him a disapproving look and Mr. Simmons immediately declines. Those were enough hints for us fans to decide Peter was his boyfriend. Years later, the show's creator Craig Bartlett finally confirmed Mr. Simmons is gay and had them together in the 2017 Hey Arnold: The Jungle Movie. It was so exciting to finally get the confirmation years later, even though I was already certain of it for many years. I was happy that the cartoon no longer had to settle with vague hints about it.
8.) Callie and Arizona - Grey’s Anatomy
Tumblr media
I was very happy to see a lesbian couple on prime time tv and I really liked both characters. I was excited to root for them but sadly as most couples on this show, their relationship took a turn, and I wasn’t thrilled about it. I was disappointed that it came to an end. By then I was already getting tired of watching the show. It was starting to feel like a chore to watch it every week. I tried to stick it out because I don’t like to give up on shows in the middle of it, but I just couldn’t do it anymore. I’m glad I did though because the shocking events with Derek Shepard, is something I’m glad I wasn’t around for. Anyway, I heard things between Callie and Arizona got even worse, so I was even happier I left when I did.
9.) Sherwin and Jonathan - In a Heartbeat
Tumblr media
This was one of the cutest things I have ever seen! I wish this got the full-length movie treatment instead of a short film. But it was still a step in the right direction for the LGBTQ community. Gay characters in cartoons always bring me such joy and that was the focus of this short. A boy with a crush on another boy with a cute ending. What is not to love?!
10.) Mitch and Cam - Modern Family
Tumblr media
Another show I had to give up on in the middle of the series. The show began to be less funny and more annoying to me. Another reason, that really has nothing to do with the show itself, that used to annoy me was that this show repeatedly beat out Parks and Recreation during award season. Parks and Recreation is a superior show when compared to Modern Family. This show won almost every year for years and it got really annoying especially when the quality of the show started slipping and they kept winning. After a few years, they finally stopped winning all the time. But before all that, I was a fan of Cam and Mitch. They were a great couple who I loved watching on the show. They were the best part of the show most of the time. But sadly, my annoyance of the show no longer being as funny as it used to be, was enough for me to stop watching.

A bit of a crush // Bill Hader x reader
Pairing: Bill Hader x SNLcastmember!reader Word count: 1646 Warnings: Fluff  I guess? Summary: Bill is hosting this week on SNL. You are excited to have your friend back, but a kissing scene on a sketch makes you do the impossible not to let him notice your crush on him.
Tumblr media
The show was about to start and you were taking the last look at your script in the backstage. You felt nearly as nervous as you did the first time you were on Saturday Night Live, but it wasn’t exactly the show what had you so worried. It was more related with Bill Hader hosting that night.
Not that you weren’t glad to have him in the show again, you and Hader had worked together in the show for a few years before he left, and you two had become quite close. You would even dare to say that he was your personal friend, and not just a colleague at work. But one thing you had never dared to say to anyone was that you had a bit of a crush on him. It hadn’t been such a big deal until now anyway, you had managed to keep it a secret for years. But tonight, according to the script you were still holding in your hands, you had to kiss each other during a sketch. Several times.
You were so nervous about it that you had been avoiding Bill all week. You feared that you would do or say something around him that would make him realize your feelings for him and make everything uncomfortable.
So many things could go wrong: ‘What if I freak out right before we kiss? Or what if I get so nervous around him that I mess the whole scene up? What if he gets mad at me and doesn’t want to talk to me anymore?’
Taking a final breathe before the show began, you got up and put on your wig for the first sketch as Bill made his monologue.
The time passed, the firsts live sketches that night had been truly good, and even though you and Bill had acted together in some of those, everything went smoothly. You tried to calm down reminding yourself how easy working with Bill was, and that kissing another actor wasn’t such a big deal - you had kissed other people on a scene before, but then again, you weren’t attracted to those people.
It was almost moment for the sketch to begin and, from where you were standing, you couldn’t help but to look in Bill’s direction. He caught you staring and discreetly waved at you as you looked away and waved him back, tremendously shy. You were about to kiss the man and you couldn’t even stand close to him without making a fool out of yourself, you thought.
The sketch officially began and Bill got on screen to begin with the scene. He was supposed to be meeting with his friends to introduce them to his girlfriend, your character. You watched them act while you used those final moments to try and get in character. When you heard your cue, you got into the scene, sitting beside Bill.
“Hey, baby cakes!” You said, in a way higher pitch than your real one. He kissed you on the cheek and you immediately blushed, hopping no one would notice.
The scene went by. Bill and you were calling each other all sort of stupid pet names and being all over each other, making the other characters in the scene get extremely uncomfortable. Everything was going okay, but the moment of the first kiss was approaching. You were so close to Bill that you were afraid that he could feel your heart pounding inside of your chest and realize how nervous you were. Looking at him in the eye, you leant in for the kiss.
As soon as you felt his lips on yours, you felt a shiver going through your whole body. Your hands went through his hair while his were on your hips. For a single moment, you forgot you were in front of everyone and tried to focus on the kiss. Well, not everyone has the chance to kiss their crush and getting paid for it, right? Why were you so nervous about it, anyway?
Finally, you both pulled away as one of the other characters was giving you your cue to talk. You looked at Kristen’s character as she spoke to you, but you had forgotten your line. Trying not to freak out, you smiled at her as you tried to remember your goddamn line.
“Come on, cuddle bunny.” You heard Bill’s voice and turned to him. “Tell them about how we met.” He was literally saving your ass by reminding you what your line was about.
“Yeah, sure, sugar lips…” You remembered your line and went on track again.
From that moment until the scene ended, you tried your best not to mess up again. You were so embarrassed that you had forgotten your line that you couldn’t even look at Bill in the eye after the sketch.
For the next hour and until the show ended, you were avoiding Bill again. You could see in the corner of your eye how he tried to approach to you in between sketches, but you went away every time, making up some pretty lame excuses to him. You didn’t know how to talk nor act around his presence now that you had made a fool out of yourself in front of him.
But when everything was finally over and everyone was getting ready for the after party, Bill tried to approach to you again as you were taking your make up off in your dressing room. Despite every attempt you could possibly make, there was no escaping that.
“Hey.” He got in the room, closing the door behind him. “Can we talk now?”
You turned to him, biting your lip as you looked at him, not knowing what to say to him now. He probably thought that you were stupid or something and you didn’t want to make things even worse.
“I’m so sorry I forgot my line.” You said to him, not being able to look at his face.
“What?” He asked in confusion. “Why would you be sorry for that? It happens to everyone.” Bill assured you, getting closer to you and sitting by your side. “That’s not what I wanted to talk about, anyway.”  He sighed before he continued. “It’s just that I was looking forward to working with you again this week and I kind of felt like you were driving me away…”
You looked up at him, you had your hands on both of your thighs as you listen to him, trying so hard not to make him notice how anxious that conversation was making you. It was true that you had been driving him away, but you didn’t feel brave enough to tell him the reason why you had been doing that.
“I wanted to know if everything was okay between us.” His blue eyes were on yours, trying to understand what was going on inside your head.
“Yeah, everything is fine. I’ve just been in a lot of stress lately.” You were as sincere as you could in that scenario.
Bill looked away, not knowing how to handle that situation either. It felt to him that you were making up some excuse so he would leave you alone. Back when he was still on the cast of SNL, you would told him when something was upsetting you or if you were having a rough time. Now it felt like you didn’t want to talk to him at all.
“Hey, I don’t know if I did something to upset you, but I’m really sorry if I did.” He apologized. “I would like to talk it out and fix things between us, but I understand if you don’t want to talk about it right now…” He got up. “Just, call me when you feel ready to discuss whatever thing that is bothering you and let me know if I can do anything for you, okay?” He smiled at you, making his way to the door.
You looked at him as he walked away, feeling terrible. You didn’t want him to think that he had done anything for you not wanting to talk to him, he had been nothing but a sweetheart to you. Closing your eyes and taking a deep breathe you decided to stop him.
“Bill, wait.” You spoke, feeling the palms of your hands sweaty. “You didn’t do anything wrong, it’s just that I felt so nervous about our kissing scene tonight that I didn’t know how to act around you.” He frowned at you, not quite understanding what you were trying to say. “I felt so anxious about kissing you tonight because I may have a crush on you.” You finally confessed, looking down immediately after the words came out of your mouth.
“Wow.” You heard Bill mutter and for a moment, you wished you had never said anything. “Since when?” He asked.
“Since you were working here.” You replied, as he got closer to you and sat beside you once again.
“Why didn’t you say anything in all this time?” Bill looked at you in the eye.
“I-I didn’t know how you would react.” You explained your fear to him. “I was afraid that it would make things awkward between us or that you wouldn’t want me around anymore.”
“Why would you think something like that would happen?” He warmly smiled at you, placing a hand on your cheek and caressing it lovingly. “I would never want to push you away.”
He looked at you in the eye and then at your lips as he got closer to them, slowly. He doubted a bit before placing his lips on top of yours and kissing you gently. You kissed him back as you felt yourself blush uncontrollably.
“You should have told me earlier.” He laughed when you both pulled away. “Because I also may have a bit of a crush on you.”

I'm just curious can you list the losers club from your favorite to least favorite and explain why
Ohhh this is so hard and here’s why: Richie and Eddie are constantly rotating who is in the top spot depending on like... my mood, or what I’m thinking or writing about the most. I know that probably comes as a surprise given that most of my meta is so Eddie focused? But god I just love Richie so much. It’s a head vs. heart thing with them, honestly. A year ago I would’ve absolutely said Eddie first because I was constantly churning out meta about him, but RIGHT AT THIS MOMENT the order is:
1. Richie. Gonna go with my heart on this one - I have a big giant weakness for funny-charming characters/people, so Richie has always been like, the “if I was gonna marry one of the Losers” choice since I first read the book in high school. And Richie has so much depth, but you have to really read between the lines to find it, so his chapters are fun in that way, too. I love him for the same reasons Eddie does - his “sometimes enchanting, sometimes exhausting charm”, his ambition, his willingness to go with the flow, his devotion to his friends, his intelligence, his fascination with music and theatrics, and also the way he’s just sort of an enigma. And then obviously Bill Hader, a long-time celebrity crush, had to come along and fulfill my wildest dreams by taking the role and pouring his soul into it. Lastly, in terms of writing, I have the most fun writing Richie. I write Eddie’s POV a lot more (on the rare occasions I write fic) because it comes more naturally, but I actually get the most fulfillment from writing Richie.
2. Eddie. If my heart belongs to Richie, my brain belongs to Eddie. I have spent countless hours analyzing every god damn word in his chapters and I think about him nearly constantly. He’s always been the Loser I relate to the most, but not because of his home life or anything (my parents are actually a lot like Richie’s - my dad is hilarious and my mom is just great, but as a kid/teen they didn’t get me at all because I turned out way weirder and more annoying than they anticipated and it was a Struggle to communicate lmao). Anyway, I relate to Eddie’s personality a lot, and just how his brain works. I too am always stuck in my own head, emotional and overly self-critical, historically reluctant to take risks because it’s safer to be stagnant, will bend over backwards to take care of other people to the point of not doing anything for myself because of codependent tendencies, etc etc. Analyzing Eddie gives me a lot of intellectual fulfillment and also helps me reflect on myself. This is why I refuse to baby him and try to explore and examine his flaws and mistakes. He’s the most complex character in the story and inherently so Brave and Good. (sidenote: I hate saying really positive things right after saying that I relate to him because it feels arrogant and like I’m saying that about myself, too, which I’m definitely not. Does anyone else get like that? Like, you relate to a character and openly praise them, but then feel like a giant asshole because you inadvertently said something nice about yourself by loving on a character you relate to?)
3. Ben. I love reading Ben’s chapters so much, he’s such a well-developed character and I feel his chapters are almost on par with Eddie’s in terms of being a joy to read and having a very distinct tone. If Eddie’s the guiding light of the group, Ben is the engineer. He has this sort of deep and natural self-confidence that I love. He’s got his hobbies, his books, and he’s just chillin’. He’s very self conscious about his body, but he’s SO confident about his mind and his heart. I’ve always found it fascinating that Ben’s IT manifestations are so impersonal and very typical movie-monster type shit, and I think it’s because he really doesn’t fear much. He doesn’t need to. He knows what he’s capable of and he doesn’t stop to ruminate about it, he just fucking does it. IT can’t really touch that. Also, as Richie’s mirror, he automatically gets a high spot on the list - we stan wildly successful but deeply lonely guys who spent their youth pining in secret.
4. Mike. I know a lot of people find the Derry Interludes boring, but I really love being able to dive into Mike’s stream of consciousness journal keeping. He’s truly the lighthouse keeper, and that’s a rough fucking gig. His love of lore and history is so relatable, though. And I love his relationship with his parents, especially with Will, and it’s great to have a prominent example of positive parenting to combat against the likes of Sonia, Alvin, and Butch Bowers. Mike really loves his parents and the Losers, and he’s so smart and sensitive and GOOD, even in the face of near-constant racism and 27 years of exhausting and lonely detective work. My only wish for him is to fucking leave Derry and finally relax.
5. Bev. I really love Bev, but she’s lower on the list because I find her to be a pretty underdeveloped character in the novel. This is mostly because Stephen King truly sucks at writing women, but knowing that doesn’t stop me from just not feeling super engaged with her chapters. In theory, Bev is great - and she was/will be great in the movies, too. She’s Eddie’s mirror, so admittedly a lot of my affection for her stems from that and the joy I get from examining their parallels (particularly in terms of how IT targets them both with their sexuality and dirtiness/cleanliness).
6. Bill. I have never really been super invested in Bill. It’s just like... too glaringly obvious that he’s a self-insert for Stephen King, so he falls flat a lot of the time, for me. Sometimes I like to think that’s intentional, because we get so much of seeing Bill through the Losers’ eyes with all their idolization and projection, so the “real Bill” never really stood a chance of living up to that image. Other times all I see is a self-insert. But I do really love the way his guilt over Georgie’s death is explored and how that guilt leads him to be selfishly single-minded in his quest for vengeance. I just wish more time was spent on that in his adult chapters and less on that cringey hotel sex scene.
7. Stan. Stan is last but I certainly don’t dislike him. It’s just... I’m really sorry but I think Stan is a super overrated character. I love his scene with the Standpipe and the drowned kids, and I think his friendships with Eddie and Bev are not given enough attention, and I love Stanpat, but overall... I just don’t think about him all that much. I’m really only able to get invested in Stan if it’s in relation to Patty. They just wanted a baby and a happy life, Mike.
This turned into such a fucking ramble. Hopefully it’s what you were looking for! 😬

Epic Movie (Re)Watch #238 - Men in Black 3
Tumblr media
Spoilers Below
Have I seen it before: Yes
Did I like it then: Yes.
Do I remember it: Yes.
Did I see it in theaters: Yes.
Was it a movie I saw since August 22nd, 2009: Yes, #159.
Format: Blu-ray
1) For some reason it took ten years between the second and third films in this series, after five years between one and two. At this rate we’ll see Men in Black 4 in 2032.
2) The escape from Lunar Max is actually a very well done opening to the film.
Tumblr media
It does well to re-establish this world which audiences haven’t seen in ten years. The sense of humor, the eccentricities, all of it. But more than that you get a sense for how dangerous Boris the Animal is.
3) Jemaine Clement as Boris the Animal
Tumblr media
(source)
There are two absolutely incredibly performances this film gives us and the first of them is Jemaine Clement as the villainous Boris. Holy crap, Clement is just amazing in the part. Nearly unrecognizable under Rick Baker’s masterful makeup, Clement embraces the prosthetics and otherworldly nature of the character to make Boris something truly special. Every scene he’s in Clement just commands. It’s hard to top Edgar the Bug from the first film but honestly I think Clement’s Boris is my favorite villain in the entire film. He is uniquely memorable and totally fun to watch.
4) I love that, even after 15 years on the job, J still has fun with the neurloizer.
5) The first scene of the film does well to re-establish the dynamic between J and K. We never really got to see them as seasoned partners in the first two films but now they’ve been on the job for ten-fifteen years depending on how you count. This shows in the as-always strong chemistry between Smith and Jones, making for a unique facet of the film.
6) Zed may be dead, but that doesn’t mean Rip Torn isn’t in this movie. Did you see him?
Tumblr media
7) Emma Thompson as O is a welcome and fitting addition to the world. A remarkably talented actress, it feels like O has been here the entire time and I love it.
Tumblr media
8)
J [to K]: “How did you get to be like you?”
Unlike Men in Black II, which I felt introduced a number of interesting ideas but didn’t develop any of them well enough to be interesting. This film on the other hand puts a considerable focus on the question of how K ended up where he is. It’s a very personal story and we can tell the stakes are higher because of how K acts. He loses it on Wu, he gets really upset by K standards, which shows the audience something is up. That’s important moving forward.
9) The Chinese restaurant shootout is a very classic Men in Black action scene. Fun alien surprises, a bit of the gross out factor, good action, solid laughs, everything you’d want from this film in one scene.
youtube
10) The conflict between J and Tommy Lee Jones K, however brief it may feel, is incredibly rich and interesting. It sets up the relationship with J and Josh Brolin K very well.
11) The changes brought on by Boris’ time travel are fun to see. The fact that the woman who lives in K’s apartment is the waitress from the second film, a different guard at the door, and a random but appreciated Will Arnett cameo. The added detail of those who have experienced a disruption in the time stream craving chocolate milk is a fun element also.
12) I love how J is able to recall super specific details about K when he’s proving he didn’t imagine him. It speaks greatly to their relationship.
13) We never FULLY get an explanation for why J can remember K but no one else can. I think it’s because J saw what K did at the very end or something, but it’s never really fully explained. And even if that is the reason, why can Jeffrey Price remember it?
Tumblr media
14) Time Jump.
youtube
Visually speaking, this scene is the crown jewel of the entire film. The way time moves and changes around J as he falls is unique in the time travel genre and incredibly fun to watch.
15) I love, J.
J [after getting pulled over by cops in the 60s for being a black guy driving a nice car]: “Just because you see a black man driving in a nice car DOES NOT MEAN IT’S STOLEN! [Beat] I stole this one, but not because I’m BLACK!”
16) Josh Brolin as Young K.
Tumblr media
Brolin is tied with Jemaine Clement as the best damn part of the whole movie. Because holy freaking shit, his Tommy Lee Jones is kickass. It’s beyond freaky how believable Brolin is as a young Tommy Lee Jones, but what makes his role as K so good is that it’s not JUST an impression. Brolin is giving a performance which matches Jones’ while also making it his own. He’s playing a younger K, a K who is a bit happier. This K is the same character that Tommy Lee Jones plays but a different version of him, a line which Brolin wakes with finesse and perfection. His chemistry with Smith matches Jones’ and he just has a fun time on screen. I freaking love Brolin in this film.
17) I’m surprised it took them three movies to make this joke.
J: “Yeah, I was an agent for three years before I learned all models are aliens.”
18) Bill Hader as Andy Warhol/Agent W.
Tumblr media
Hader’s cameo is one of the best gags in the entire film. He has probably five minutes of screen time but it’s Bill Hader and he totally steals the scene. The entire concept that Andy Warhol is an agent of MIB who is just bullshitting his art is such a unique idea that it’s hard not to laugh at the scene that follows.
19) Michael Stuhlbarg as Griffin.
Tumblr media
Stuhlbarg is one of the finest character actors in modern day cinema, having appeared in such critically acclaimed films as Lincoln, Hitchcock, Steve Jobs, Miles Ahead, and most recently The Shape of Water. His work in Men in Black 3 is no less up to snuff as his performance/character adds a unique level of intelligence and wisdom to the film. Griffin is a hopeful, soft spoken, gentle creature who helps give the film an extra layer of sympathy and emotion. I think while we have absolutely stellar performances in Brolin and Clement, it’s Stuhlbarg’s Griffin who helps elevate the story as well.
20)
Young K [to J]: “Ask me any question. Anything you want.”
I love that. It gets to the heart of their relationship, a connection they didn’t have before, and further illustrates the difference between Brolin’s K and Jones’ K. It’s a great moment.
21) Griffin showing J & Young K the game.
youtube
There is one unique detail in this scene which I think helps make it so smooth and that’s the lighting. Anyone who sees the game Griffin is watching is lit in sunlight, but when J steps back he’s in darkness even though Griffin is still lit. It helps keeps the sense of place and action, anchoring it in physicality and reality.
Beyond the technique of the scene, Griffin’s entire philosophy on how miracles work adds a nice level of philosophy to the film which helps differentiate it from previous Men in Black movies.
22) The cycle chase is a great action set piece while the cycles themselves are a great addition to the franchise’s gadget canon.
Tumblr media
23)
Boris [to his 1969 counterpart]: “You pathetic waste of Boglodite flesh!”
The scene with 1969 Boris and 2012 Boris just shouting at each other/shitting on each other is a unique and fun way to show the character’s self loathing. It helps you understand him a bit more.
24) I used this line in a paper I wrote for an AP English paper my junior year of high school.
Griffin: “But where there is death there will always be death.”
My teacher wrote something along the lines of, “I don’t think you should be using a Men in Black quote in this paper,” to which I ask: why not? I still got an A and it fit. Check your genre basis, public education system.
25) I ship K & O (OK? KO?). That is all.
Tumblr media
26) Hey look! It’s Luke Cage!
Tumblr media
The twist that comes about from Mike Colter as the Colonel makes the character extra important, but the fact that five and a half years later I know who Mike Colter is gives the scene an extra bit of rewatch value.
27) The Cape Canaveral climax.
Tumblr media
The climax of the film plays with the idea of the two Boris-s in a fun way. The entire thing is well paced, well choreographed, and notably intelligent (especially in the way J uses time travel to his advantage). All in all, it’s just really fun to watch.
28) The truth about the Colonel.
Tumblr media
This moment retcons a little bit of the first movie, of the relationship between J and K. But it packs a considerable amount of emotional punch to it, answering the question of, “What happened to K?” in a meaningful way. It’s remarkably sad, giving the film an extra layer of heart and emotion which makes me tear up a bit now for personal reasons. I love it.
29) It’s nice to see 2012 K with a little more heart to him, that he’s come out of this time travel adventure for the better and his relationship with J is strong.
30) The ending gag of the film does well to match the intelligence and organic nature of the marble gag from the first movie without feeling forced.
youtube
I really like Men in Black 3. There’s a chance it’s my favorite of the the trilogy (although objectively I think the first is the best). It moves past the problems of the first film to deliver an emotionally interesting, high stakes story. Jones & Smith’s chemistry is top notch but they’re joined by INCREDIBLE new additions to the film such as Jemaine Clement, Josh Brolin, and Emma Thompson. I definitely recommend this film, it’s a lot of fun and I think the most underrated of the trilogy.

Is This the Oscars or Saturday Night Live?
Gary Oldman as Winston Churchill, Natalie Portman as Jackie Kennedy, Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury, Taron Egerton as Elton John, Renee Zellweger as Judy Garland… The list goes on and on. Every year, the movie awards circuit zeroes in on actors who played real people onscreen, both living and dead. Such actors presumably spent hours studying interviews, dialects, performances, and primary and secondary written sources on their “character.” But when does acting stop and imitation begin? What makes one performance worthy of a For Your Consideration campaign and the other relegated to a five minute sketch on Saturday Night Live?
Tumblr media
One can argue that all acting is a form of imitation: imitating the human condition, mimicking feelings and expressions to effectively communicate an imaginary situation to the audience. Any actor will tell you, while some skillfully switch between “on” and “off” and others struggle to break out of character, they often really do feel their performances on an emotional level. Most actors consider “going through the motions” a failure of a performance. Acting requires a great deal of emotional and physical commitment, regardless of whether a character really lived or not.
Performing as real people has long been a regular and respected aspect of acting, from Shakespeare onward and probably even before then. (I’m no history major- oh wait, I am. I’m not sure how that happened.) Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, for example, now nearly mythical figures of the British monarchy, once served as familiar characters onstage, in modern times replaced in the public consciousness by less-than-royal celebrities. So it’s not a new phenomenon, this desire to see the people we read about living out there lives (preferably the dramatic bits) onstage or onscreen.
An actor portraying a real person has their prep work cut out for them: biographies, documentaries, YouTube videos, and countless other resources can give one insight into a person’s motivations, desires, and fears. Then again, can we ever truly know a person, regardless of how much has been written about them or how much they’ve even written about themselves? There should be a disclaimer for critics who think playing a real person is easy: some imagination and assembly required!
While the preparation sounds fun, living up to an audience’s expectations provides an actor with a particularly explosive minefield, one called public opinion, to navigate. Play the part too spot on and it’s a caricature. Play the part as you would any other character, with artistic license, and it’s not accurate. In this regard, an actor could easily fall off the tightrope while walking in a real person’s shoes, down into the lions’ den of hungry critics and audience members alike. (That’s three metaphors rolled into one sentence; bon appetit.)
So should we continue to lavish extra attention on the actors who dare to tackle these biographical roles? Or should we consciously shift our focus to actors who instead pursue original characters and bring only their artistic sensibility and understanding of the material to the role? Is Bill Hader’s impression of Keith Morrison from Dateline equally worthy of praise compared to Charlize Theron’s portrayal of Megyn Kelly in Bombshell? Where is the line between a joke and “serious” acting if both outcomes result from careful observation and researching your subject?
The fact is, in order to win awards, people have to watch an actors’ work. Which movie are Academy voters more likely to give a chance: a film about a familiar beloved musician or a well-known dramatic event, or a film based on only the imagination of the film crew? What seems like a safer bet to the busy mom with $15 and a babysitter for three hours tops? When put into this perspective, it’s understandable why audiences gravitate towards the familiar story and heap praise onto the performances within a comfortably predictable structure, perhaps at the cost of lesser-seen pictures with equally talented cast members. A great actor breathes life into any character, whether based on fact or fiction, and each type of performance potentially deserves awards consideration. But since I’m not an Academy voter, all I can use is my ticket money, my attention, and my platform at CineMama to spread awareness for actors’ work that may otherwise get overlooked.

Blog McFraggle 7
In the past couple of weeks I’ve been working with my group of 5 on a project for the Royal Opera House. The project was prefaced with a choice given to us as a year, wether to choose who we work with, or work in the groups picked for us. We voted to work in the pre selected groups, (probably because the vote was preceded by “we hope you can all be adults about this”). I like my group, I’ve had the opportunity to talk to nearly all of them one to one in a non-work context and they’re all nice people. There are some conflicts in vision and organisational abilities within the group, for example for most of last week the same people would show up a few hours late and then lord over the project. By the time of our interim critique this past Monday, we had a fairly developed idea with a well considered animatic, and it went down ok. Shortly after we had a tutorial in which our tutor could see clearly the idea was not interesting to us, and then suggested we start again, which we did. The past 3 days have been developing an idea that I had the evening after the critique, and right now everyone in the group feels much more enthralled by the project and I feel less worried about saving the film in the edit.
In my spare time I have not managed to do a whole lot. I’ve only been reading around 10 pages of my book a night and I’ve even missed a couple of nights. However I have started watching Documentary Now, starring Bill Hader and Fred Armisen, and my love for Bill has been firmly justified. Each episode is a parody of an existing documentary, however most episodes feel like much more than just parody. The humour is pretty sensitive and rarely laugh out loud, but the characters behind every episode provide so much more than a medium for jokes, they are well established in a short amount of time, and feel like human beings who exist in the world. I am instantly sucked into the reality of every episode and already has become one of my favourite shows.
Yesterday at kp the book sale was back, I’m not sure if it’s a company that sells discounted art books or just a guy with lots of books, but every once and a while this dude shows up in the main building with loads of really nice art books for pretty good prices, I’ve bought something every time he shows up. Yesterday I bought 4 copies of Illustrators magazine, the first one I picked up had work from Bruce Pennigton, who illustrated the cover of A Princess of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs, which I only bought because of it’s awesome cover, the next had work from Les Edwards who illustrated the box art for my favourite board game, Heroquest. I bought two more after that as the magazines are really good quality and were being sold for £5 each when they are a whopping £18 new. Both Bruce Pennington and Les Edwards have produced work so beyond my comprehension in it’s production, I know it’s painted, usually oil on a board, but that’s about it, currently I could never hope to reproduce anything of nearly the same quality. As cheesy as a lot of fantasy and sf illustration looks, I really love it, and there’s something about the way these guys do it that really appeals to me, it’s perhaps the fact it’s practically made that adds a whole other level of difficulty in it’s production, but as Edwards puts it “an emotional quality’ to the final piece, something as simple as being able to feel the resistance of your materials and having the work physically in front of you to ponder over could be all the difference. It definitely inspires me to work on my painting ability, or simply my developing my understanding of painting principles like shadows and colour that consistently lacks in my work.
Edit: oh also the Hawk Conservancy didn’t respond to my email giving them a free animation so that’s kinda sad

The Letter // Bill Hader x reader
Pairing: Bill Hader x reader Word count: 2200 Warnings: Lenguage Request: Could I possibly request an imagine where the reader has feelings for Bill, but is too scared to confess so she writes him an anonymous love letter and leaves it on his work desk, leading him to figure out who wrote it? If not, I understand. (a/n): Thanks for the request, this was fun to write. Hope you like it! 😄
Tumblr media
Like every other morning, Bill arrived on set early and went to his office to prepare himself for the day ahead. He knew it was going to be a long day, it usually was like that when shooting, but he was already used to repeating the same scenes again and again during the endless filming sessions and to not going home until it was late at night. Not that he disliked his job — working on Barry had gave him the chance to write and direct his own stuff, like he always had dreamt of — but sometimes it could be exhausting, especially on days of filming a very intense and emotional scene, days like today.
He was trying to set his mind in the right place, to get ready to get into character for the big scene. Bill was alone in his office, looking for his script so he could go over his lines one last time, when he noticed a blank envelope placed on his desk. He didn’t remember leaving it there so, curious, he reached for it and opened it carefully to find a letter inside.
Or, at least, something that once was intended to be a letter. The paper inside was so wrinkled and full of studs that Bill had to be especially careful when he unfolded it in order not to break it.
‘Dear Bill,
I don’t know if you’re going to read this or just throw it into the trash. (As I’m writing this letter, I don’t even know if I’m going to be able to send it to you…) And, honestly, I’m not sure if I want you to read this or not, but I feel that I just need to get this off my chest.
I (love) like you. I have liked you for some time now, and even when I do my best to try and get these feelings to go away, I simply can’t get rid of them. And it scares me to death. I can’t stop thinking about (you) what would happen if you found out and things got awkward, because that is the last thing I’d want. I didn’t mean (to fall in love) for any of this to happen, and I want you to know that, regardless of how I feel, I’m not asking anything from you. I know you would never see me the way that I see you, and (I understand) (I’m okay with it) I wouldn’t expect that you would.
You have to believe me when I say that I’m not really sure how this happened. At first I thought this was a dumb crush that would go away eventually, but when time passed and nothing changed, I realized that (I was in love) it was something else. Spending time with you and getting to know you a bit better has been really special to me, (every time that you laugh at something I say it means the world to me) just hearing you laugh or having a chat with you makes my day. I know it’s not much, but it’s enough for me. (I wouldn’t be able to ask for anything else)
To be honest, I’m content with just being able to work with you, even though (seeing you everyday hurts) I know nothing will ever happen. I’m simply glad that I got the chance to meet someone like you and all I really want is for you to be happy.
(With love) Sincerely,’
Bill was definitely blushing when he reached the end of the letter. He looked everywhere for a signature so he would know who had sent it to him, but he wasn’t able to find anything but unintelligible studs. By the time he could realize, he was rereading the letter again. And then a third time. For him, it was hard to conceive that someone was feeling that way for him.
It was the first time he received a love letter. And honestly, he would have never expected to get one in the first place — you surely don’t get a lot of those when you are a divorcee parent of three —, but he couldn’t deny he was flattered that someone was feeling that for him. He just couldn’t stop thinking about who could have possibly written that. All he knew was that it was someone from set, but other than that he was completely clueless.
His eyes were revising the letter again, unconsciously looking for any hint that would point him in any direction, when he heard a knock on the door.
“Bill, dude.” Alec made him look away from the paper he still held in his hands. “You should be getting your make up on by now.”
“I’m on my way.” Bill cursed himself internally for not having time to go over his lines and, with extreme care, he folded the letter so he could fit it in his pocket.
While getting ready for shooting, he couldn’t hold back a small smile as he still thought about it. It felt nice, as well as a little embarrassing, to think that someone was in love with him. And also kind of frustrating not being able to get that thought out of his mind.
He couldn’t stop his mind from wandering between theories of who might have written that letter. Maybe he was giving it more importance that he should. What if it was written for another Bill? Well, they had left it in his office, but they could have made a mistake. Or what if it was just a joke? Either way, he simply couldn’t think of anything other than the damn letter. And when filming finally started, it became a bit of a problem.
Bill was so caught up in his own thoughts that he couldn’t even say his lines right, the very same lines he himself had wrote. After several takes, it was starting to get frustrating. He finally managed to get a few scenes done after lots of tries, but how was he going to get himself in the right place for that emotional scene if his thoughts were somewhere else? He did his best to try and focus, but it was impossible. He just kept messing it up. Alec, who directed the episode, decided to let everyone have a 20-minute-break in hopes that Bill would get his shit together.
“What is going on?” The director asked, trying to understand why filming a couple of scenes was taking so long.
“Nothing, I just need to go over my lines a final time.” Bill lied, embarrassed of admitting that the reason he acted strange was that he felt like an awkward teenager over an anonymous love letter. “I’ll get it right next time.”
Taking a deep breathe, he took his script and walked to a quiet place so he could sit down and try to clear his thoughts. He didn’t really know what was wrong with him that he couldn’t stop thinking about the letter. Well, it wasn’t exactly the letter what was haunting him, but who could have possibly wrote it. It was the doubt that was driving him insane because, for much that he thought about it, he had absolutely no idea of who his ‘secret admirer’ was, and he would be lying if he said that he wasn’t dying to find out.
“Hey, Bill…” A voice got him out of his thoughts. When he looked up, he saw you standing in front of him, still dressed in costume though you had finished filming your scenes for the day. Seeing the weird way he had been acting all day had triggered your alarms, so you had decided to check on him. “Are you alright?”
“Yes, I’m just feeling a little off…” He said, trying not to worry you. Yet, he realized his answer wasn’t elaborate enough for you to believe him.
“Are you sure? I just want you to know that I am here if you need anything” You insisted, sitting next to him.
Bill looked at you and sighed. The both of you had a good relationship even though you had only met each other for nearly two years, since you had been casted to play one of Barry’s acting classmates. You always seemed kind of shy, but you were funny and really nice, so realizing that he needed to share what was going on with someone, he reached for his pocket and handed the letter to you, clearly embarrassed.
“Honestly, I’m a little confused because I got this letter this morning…” He explained, as you unfolded the paper. “And I know it might seem stupid, but I can’t stop thinking about it.”
Reading the first words of the letter, you felt yourself blush uncontrollably. You were going to kill D’Arcy.
“What are you writing?” You heard your friend’s voice as you looked over the paper, making studs over some of the parts you disliked, thinking that might as well you could just burn the whole letter down.
“I’m just writing a letter to my sister.” Doing your best to play it cool, you tried to fold the paper so she wouldn’t see any of what was written, but you weren’t fast enough.
“Oh my, are you in love with Bill?!” She asked with a huge grin on her face.
“No, D’Arcy, please.” You begged her, gesturing her to lower the volume in fear that someone — or worst, Bill — would hear her. “Don’t tell anyone.”
“I won’t say anything, but you should definitely do something about it.” Sitting right in front of you, she added. “You know, I sometimes babysit his little girls, maybe I could pretend to be sick next time so you can do it for me and get closer to him.”
“I don’t want to do anything about it.” You assured, turning the paper between your hands into a wrinkled ball. “I just needed to get it off my chest, but that’s it. I’m not planning on telling him.”
“But you would make a really cute couple.” D’Arcy tried to talk you into acting on those feelings you had, but you weren’t going to give in.
“He would never see me that way.” Throwing the letter into the trash, you sighed. “I know it’s not going to happen, so why bother?”
“Maybe if he knew what you feel things would be different.” She looked at you in the eye and took your hand in a supportive way. “What do you have to lose?” Before you were able to answer the question, a girl from the make up staff gestured you to go with her.
“I’m not going to tell him.” You assured as you walked away, wanting to forget that whole conversation.
D’Arcy watched you as you got into the make up stand and, as soon she was out of your sight, she rescued your letter from the trash so she could give you a helping hand. She had promised not to say anything, but she thought that, technically, she wouldn’t be breaking her promise if she just got Bill to read what you had written.
You knew it had to be her, D’Arcy was the only one that knew the existence of that letter besides you. And, definitely, you hadn’t been the one giving him that letter.
“I don’t know, it’s weird to think that someone feels that way about me.” Taken aback, you looked at him to find him blushing too. “And it feels weirder not to know who.”
Staying silent for a few seconds, you tried to get yourself together. Knowing that the reason why he was acting strange was your letter had you confused. Just the thought of him reading it left you completely out of place.
“Are you mad at whoever wrote this?” You asked, your voice weak and sounding more insecure than you would have liked.
“No, of course not.” Bill was quick to say. “I actually liked it, to be honest. They say really sweet things in the letter...” He added with a little smile. When he looked up at you and saw the way you avoided eye contact, he suddenly had an idea of who might have been. He waited a few seconds for you to say something, but when you didn’t, he dared to ask the question that was now inside his head. “Y/N, did you write it?”
“I just wrote it because I couldn’t keep it to myself any longer.” You muttered as you looked down at the floor, not being brave enough to look at him. Taking a deep breathe, you continued. “I know you don’t feel the same, and that’s okay, I-“
Before you could finish the sentence, he grabbed you by your chin so you would be facing him and kissed your lips softly. You needed a few seconds to process what was happening before finally kissing him back, your cheeks burning and your heart skipping a bit or two.
“So, would you like to go get a coffee or something sometime?” He asked after pulling away, a smile spread on his face.
“That would be nice.” You shyly accepted, knowing that you would have to thank D’Arcy after all.
