ageha and miroku work so well as protagonist and antagonist because they’re so similar at their cores

they have stark contrasts throughout the series, such as melchsee’s door being pitch-black and devouring everything while sephirot is pure white and known as the ‘tree of life,’ the sun and moon comparisons

but at the same time there are also references made to how similar they are, the adaptability of their powers as noted by yusaka and an actual resemblance as noted by #07

even kabuto’s story in the second novel touches on it

both of them have the mindset that they want to change the world, regardless of what it takes and what they must do in order to achieve it

and i think what makes ageha really work in comparison to miroku is that he doesn’t do a lot of acting based on ‘general idealism,’ he’s not very preachy on ‘right or wrong,’ he just sees what’s happening and disagrees with it so he acts on it and calls out those who oppose him

which makes their confrontation feel so natural when ageha doesn’t try and take any higher moral ground, because he himself is guilty of a lot of the ways miroku thinks and we see that as the series progresses

they both operate off the same core of “i want to make the world change” and the only thing really separating them is how they apply this and to what extent

the way fma 03s female characters are such an interesting nuanced exploration of all kinds of gendered tropes like how sloth is a mother who feels forced into and constrained by that identity, lust is a sexy femme fatale but this identity is literally erasing her cultural roots and whitewashing her into dantes little pet, winry is the childhood friend on the sidelines who uses this as an opportunity to live her own life and build her own relationships and goals independent of the protagonists, izumis complicated relationship ,w motherhood and wrath and the elrics, dante as abusive matriarch/cult leader of the homunculi family who objectifies women of colour (rose, lust)

and I'm not even criticising mangahood itself here, but the subtlety and nuance does feel like a marked contrast to the kindve girl boss feminism a lot of fans spout when they talk about how fmabs female cast are some of the best in anime (because they're cool and beat people up and aren't fanservice fodder, which to be sure are good things but seriously feels like grading on a curve)

Some friends and I have been talking about a Dragon's Keep [DND] AU, so I took a stab at some fantasy designs for my faves :-)

So Maya is an aasimar sorcerer who was sheltered and lauded from a young age for her magical aptitude and divine blood. The people that raised her taught her skewed messages of the world and how it works, until she finds out she's being lied to and flees her home. In the outside world, she's often targeted for her unnatural magics and foreign mannerisms, but she refuses to let that keep her from learning more about the truth of the world after being hidden from so much for so long. With any luck, her ventures will lead her to learn more about the nature of her lineage.

Krieg is a goliath barbarian who was once a simple mercenary, taking odd jobs to make ends meet and provide for his family. Until one day he took the wrong job from an unscrupulous wizard looking to create a super-minion. Said wizard had taken to luring in seasoned veterans and mercenaries under the guise of a standard job, in hopes that a sturdier subject would be more likely to survive his still-experimental spells. The spell was a success in that it imbued Krieg with a great deal of power and resilience beyond that of an average person, but he was far from obedient. With the wizard quickly dead, Krieg was left with an addled brain and nobody with knowledge of the spell to understand its effects, let alone it is even reversible.

With his difficulty controlling the violent impulses he now found himself wrestling with, he isolated himself from the people he once held dearest, and with time, his memory of them deteriorated into blurry faces and fractured voices. His family presumes he died in the field. It's better that way.

Looking back on it, I believe Psyren in FMA 2003 is a narrative foil to 2 characters : Roy and Sloth. I'll mostly focus on Roy because that's really the parallel that talked to me the most.

I mean, once you think back on it, Psyren being a narrative foil to Sloth almost feels obvious : Alphonse immediately compares her to his mom, and immediately assumes she can do no wrong based on that first impression. That, plus her alchemy is heavily water-based.

But speaking of water, now onto fire: why Roy?

Well, Roy appears to the Elric brothers as an adult who is always one step above them. Almost immediately Edward shifts from admirative and respectful of him to doubtful and hostile after feeling like he was used once. A sort of rivalry gets established between the two. What's more, both Roy and Psyren are heavily associated with seductiveness, which in the 2003 version, is as much of a truth as it is a mask they wield to fool the people who underestimate them.

Most importantly though, is their goal: they both play cat and mouse with Edward, but also genuinely seem to want to help him. They both treat him half like a child, half like an adult, and tend to leave him extremely confused. Ed doesn't really seem to know for sure what to do with either of them.

But then, what does that parallel serve? Well I think Psyren makes it pretty clear: "what you think to be true of this character isn't necessarily so."

What is Psyren's goal? It is not to steal to gain money for herself, or to steal just to save a few establishment who might collapse in a few months. It's never made perfectly clear if her goal is actually the one stated, but it seems that she wants to give her dying city a few last moments of glory before it completely sinks into oblivion. The city WILL die, mind you, there is no stopping that, but she makes it go like a dying star : like a bright light everyone can see rather than a dull flicker no one noticed. She makes her city something to be remembered.

And accordingly, Roy's goal is not as obvious as it seems at first. He definetly tries to gain rank and power in the military, but why does it do it? To change the female uniform? That's obviously a stupid reason to want to go to the top. And why does he help Ed and Al ? Is it just for personal game? To be able to use them in need?

No. All he does, he does because of what happened in Ishbal. He wants to make sure something like it never happen again. Or does he? No, what he does is to give himself a justification for still being alive, to give meaning to the meaningless deaths he caused. It's both completely selfish and selfless at once. And the reason he helps Ed and Al? It's not about them, it's about the Rockbells, it's about Winry who he made an orphan. By helping the brothers he tries to correct that injustice he's responsible for. Or is it? Isn't it just because once he got to the door of their house, ready to take the blow of anything that gets thrown back at him, he instead faltered ? And that he still needed an excuse to be there?

narratively it adds so much to miroku's character, especially since most of the time he's portrayed as the exact opposite and almost every other character describes him as the exact opposite

the juxtaposition of junas seeing miroku as a caring person deep down and what shao sees as miroku's "inner self" is so good

one of my fav KH stories, elevating xehanort alot, giving insight into how his beliefs formed and i absolutely need this freed from its mobile prison and given the back cover treatment

7.Avataro Sentai Donbrothers

i was sceptical as FUCK when this was announced, and inoue and the producer were saying how they wanted to make a sentai season that was a comedy drama aimed at 20somethings, but fuck did they land it. top 3 sentai seasons for sure. taro is my boi somethings like how under written murasame is, alot of the stuff with kijino and the zenkai gears turning into avataro gears plotline that was seemingly dropped ( if the Vs movie addresses this i take back the last one) bothered me, but as a whole i really liked this season

Well after long enough here’s part two of Eridian Overrun (borderlands 3 spoilers ahead)

EO part one

This episode’s topic is

The fight for sanctuary plant gas (ft. Salvador and Krieg) + some developpement on Sally boy and Mr. Meatman

The plant gas

So I’ll try to summarize as much as I can, but basically, EO adds interesting features to the gas. Ya see, the antidote doesn’t rid you of the gas. It simply slows it down ALOT. Also, every time you go in the gas, a small quantity of it stays in your organism.

Now if you take those things and merge ‘em together, you get what I call « overexposure » Basically, if you accumulate too much gas, yet are still immune, you will enter a state of slow mutation. It is caused by the contact of this absorbed gas with pandoran spores. Overexposure can only stop by leaving the pandoran atmosphere, and therefore cutting contact with those spores.

There can be some other conditions that make you develop overexposure:

Big, but non lethal contact with the gas without having the antidote in a short span of time (ex.: Vaungh)

Going trough the early phases of infection before getting the antidote (ex.: Mordecai)

Being exposed to a big quantity of the gas with a underdose of antidote (ex.: Hector boss fight)

At first, the only symptoms are a greener taint to the blood, amplified gas boost and increased muscular strength. At this stade, the mutations can be completely reversed by cutting off contact with the spores quickly enough. Staying long enough out of pandora will rid you completely of the gas, and therefore, of overexposure. An example of this state are the vh2 by the end of FFS.

However, if some time has passed since the beginning of the mutations and you’re still on Pandora, then that’s where the real stuff begins. First of all, later stages mutations cannot be reversed, as they are too significant. However, it is still possible to stop the progress by leaving Pandora. Those mutations are: Apparition of plant spikes on the body (mostly the arms), green hands with claws, pointy teeth and first stage symptoms being further increased. Examples of this are Salvador, Krieg and Vaungh

Eventually, on extreme cases, you might grow plant limbs, but so far the only known example is the Hector boss fight

Salvador

After FFS, Salvador stayed for a bit on pandora (around a year or two) to just, yaknow, keep killing bad guys. After that, he took a little break from pandora, on Tannis’s doctor order. Later, he went back to Pandora. At some point, like a few months before the EO present (3y after bl3), Vaungh found him and invited him to the sun smashers. I know it’s not much clear, but the little drawing on the left top corner is his SS logo. Yeah they have logos like B team now. Also, SS is in an alliance with the raiders.

Krieg

So for context, PKATFF still happens (because Maya isn’t dead, it’s a bit different but it still happens.) and yk there’s still the god tier ending. Krieg stays a few months in the cave starting to fix himself. After that, with pretty good progress done, he starts thinking of other ways to help himself. Thinking about the raiders makes him realize that he can’t be alone anymore. He goes back on SANC.-3 to see his friends (and pretty lady 🫶) again. Sane Krieg’s goal isn’t rlly to get rid of psycho Krieg anymore, but to get a more shared control over the system. P Krieg still has the most control, but S Krieg can front sometimes now. He even got to see his face really recently. It’s was a pretty moving moment. Also, he kinda becomes a dad to Ava because Maya is like a mom to Ava (hehe fambly)

Oh and I know the arm in the drawing doesn’t look like Sally’s or Krieg’s and that’s because it isn’t.

borderlands ships ranked by their potential for romantic cannibalism

S - Wainlock (love you metaphysical monster cannibalism), Gayperion (They should get desperate while stranded in that dessert), Jacknisha (goresex, sex in gore, ourobouros sexual style), Tannith (do I need to explain this one?)

A - Jathena (I could see them doing it as a metaphorical just thing, Janey allowing someone to be close and intimate with her, Athena allowing herself to rely to someone else), Ryiona (same explanation but more violent)

B - Rhysothy (I think they should tear into each other with teeth but not softly and romantically), Psyren (I think it could be interesting, but only done in a certain way), Gaigel (similar to Jathena, Angel sobbing as she digs her teeth into Gauge. D - Rhysha (I just don't think Sasha would be all that into cannibalism), Timkat (same reasoning), Timmoxxi (same reasoning)

F - Nishaurelia (Nisha tries to bite her and gets her tongue stuck)
