Still, as always, thinking about how Veth's story is such a complex look at womanhood and motherhood and what it means to be a woman and a mother who wants things. Because Veth's story is about wanting, just as much as it's about learning to be brave. Veth presumably comes from a very traditional small town, married her (effectively) high school sweetheart when she was quite young and had a child almost immediately, which, while based on love, might also have been an effort to fit in and become an independent adult in her town, away from the mockery of her brothers. The things people in town didn't like about her were her strangeness and her collections of bits and bobs and oddities. The shiny things that she wanted. In some ways, that was the wedge between her and her community, the strangeness of how she desired things and wantonly kept them. Even marrying and having a kid so young could be an extension of this. Veth wants things and strives to get them
All of that in heightened after she's turned into goblin. It becomes "the itch" to steal and to horde shiny, beautiful things, which is particularly poignant considering how ugly she finds herself, even uglier than she thought of herself when she was still a halfling. She wants to surround herself with beautiful things. She wants to help Caleb. She wants to be her again. She wants.
And it's okay for Nott the Brave to want things, because Nott the Brave exists outside of social contracts. She's already a monster--there's no need to pretend to fit in. It's freeing, to be able to want things as much as you want and people won't bat an eye. As much as she hated that body, she loved the freedom it gave her. The freedom to be transgressive in a way she was unable to be as Veth Brenatto. Because, much as she loves her family, isn't being a woman and mother something of a cage to her? Those labels put her in specific boxes, they determine how she should behave. So much of later development hinges on these questions: "What does it mean to be a good woman in this society? What does it mean to be a good mother?" She is SO hard on herself for not being with Luc enough, which is absolutely understandable, but she also wants this life of adventure. Does that make her a bad person? A bad mother? To want something that isn't her family?
And then Caleb. Probably the most unfortunate thing she wants, something she knows she can never have. Because she has Yeza and she loves him and he's her husband. They have a social contract that she must abide by. But Caleb's right there and she wants him. Does that make her a bad woman? Does that make her a bad wife? It's just one more thing that makes her different from her peers, her inability to be content with what she already has. And, at the end of the day, I think this is what we should think of when we talk about Veth's relationship with motherhood and womanhood. How transgressive it is for her to so deeply desire when clearly, from the way she grew up and the messages she internalized, it wasn't a woman's place to want more than she was afforded, nor was it a mother's.

Percy, possessed as fuck, feverishly creating a whole new type of weapon: I will avenge my family and destroy the evil that inhabits my home. I will stop at nothing, and this gun will be my revenge.
Nott, shooting Beau directly in the ass during a tree climbing contest with the one bullet in her gun and then losing anyway: WORTH IT >:)

Do you ever just think about how Veth “Nott the Brave” Brenatto is one of the best characters of all time. Do you. Because I do. All the time.

There's only one way to show affection. Physical.
Touching, kissing, making love. Acts of passion. Huddling together for warmth, survival. Caleb knew them all. Had engaged in all these affections with Astrid and 'Wulf. Had enjoyed it.
Then he broke... And affection no longer existed. There was no touching. No physical contact. Even when he broke out, touch made his skin crawl. Paralyzed him with fear. Made him want to retch and claw his skin off until he could no longer feel.
But when a little goblin girl took his hand for the first time to place a piece of gold in it, he learned that stealing was another form of affection. She showed him love when she stole books and paper for him. When she stole gold itself so he could have his ink and components with the illusion of morality. And Caleb was at peace knowing there was another form of affection, one that wasn't tied to immediate bad memories.
Then there was Beauregard. Her form of affection was also physical. But not the kind he's used to. This wasn't a desperate, heady thing. This was punches to the shoulder as a way to check in, as an admonishment, as a form of excitement. This was an arm slung around his shoulder so she could ruffle his hair. This was excited slaps to his arms whenever he or his magic did something "cool." It was through her that he learned the affections of a sister.
Finally, there was Essek Thelyss. This was a completely different and yet wholly familiar form of affection. The intimacy of sharing spells, of being allowed to hold and touch and view a powerful and capable mage's spellbook. The affection that filled his body when Essek spoke nervously with the Nein, feet dangling in the hot tub. When he spoke passionately about unlocking mysteries and delving deeper. The affection for Essek began to burn, like Caleb's preferred element, like the whiskey mixed in cocoa from their time in Aeor. Different and familiar. Memories of the past mingling with changes of the present. Yet wholly its own beautiful thing.
And now, near the end of this life, Caleb Widogast is proud to note that there are infinite ways to show affection. Each one perfect. Each one comforting. Caleb breathes a sigh of relief, knowing that he will never be trapped in one form of affection ever again.

Watched the little IGN announcement teaser for the new Mighty Nein animated series. It was really good and I’m really excited for it, but if I had to nitpick it a little bit, it does kind of irk me that every character got to have a line that encapsulates their character (Yasha’s “and I don’t believe in luck” line, Fjord’s “you need me more than I need you” line), except for Nott, who’s line is about her relationship to the man in her life.
Idk maybe I’m just jaded from seeing Nott/Veth be reduced to Caleb’s emotional support mother figure so many times, and I know that her relationship with Caleb is important to her character... I just still think it’s a bit disappointing.
“Case closed” (episode 29), “A sign that there could be, for all of us, another chapter” (episode 36), “No, there’s no comma, I’m just Nott the Brave.” (episode 4), “And they made me everything that I thought I was: not pretty, not good, just not(t)” (episode 49), “Chemistry’s good, baby, but killing is better!” (episode 57), “Molly said not to steal from happy people” (episode 27), “But the reason I want to find these people and rescue them is not to use them, and it’s not because we’ve invested time into them, it’s because I love them” (also episode 27), “Every one of us has left without saying goodbye to someone in our lives” (episode 107)
Some of those are a bit too spoilery to use, but you get my idea. I just think there are a lot of better quotes they could’ve used that would’ve encapsulated Veth/Nott’s character better.

Veth swimming. It's such a quiet nondescript moment but it encapsulates her entire arc so well. The reflection. Her swimming. The contentedness??? Is that the right word. It's closure on everything she has worked for since the beginning of the campaign. And it's such a simple little moment. It hurts my heart. I love veth so much.
