" So, what do you think ? "
He sits cross-legged on the ground, looking particularly small compared to the wide canvas in front of him, small against the vast swelling of emotion in his heart, both ecstatic and nervous over going so far with something so new. Painting is something so new, and some smudges of colors still refuse to fade away from his hands and his cheek. The same colors paint a landscape laid out in a horizontal perspective, shapes angular and geometric in a way that he has grown fond of using. Trees frame the horizon on either side but fade towards the centor, and they slope upwards and end in thick, sharp points, colliding with the sky in rasping brush strokes. Within the blue expanse is its sierra of color, ranging from bright arctic shades to low aegean hues. Plashes of violet skirt at the edges of the piece, smoothing out the blue into black.
Perhaps even more striking, was the two lone white dots in the centre of the sky, parallel but following the same path, adorned with a bright halo of colours, white that fades to yellow and yellow that breaks to green, green that clashes with red and red that joins the blue, colours overlapping to give the starlight a prismatic shine that stands out.
His head sways to the side, both giddiness and whimsical anxieties well-hidden underneath his teasing smile. " Would it catch the eyes of a certain Phantom Thief ? "
@espectres
for a renaissance angel , the kaleidoscope array of colors in front of him is fantastically abstract and avant-garde . it suits shou , he thinks ; offers a glimpse of a parallel , polarized world so full and bursting with --- everything . every vibrant speck and cell that must have found itself reflected and visible to the prismatic boy that had been born with one foot planted firmly into each plane , espers and the mundane , now with a creature of timeless hikari magic looking over his work . standing before shou's creation , the invisible seems to turn visible , and the great phantom thief feels something he's never felt before .
a single loud beat in his heart leaves a cold , smooth palm landing on the top of shou's head . although it's an early , wordless approval , dark still hasn't torn his gaze away from the painted flash in front of him --- the thin slits of his eyes cinching , then rounding as they widen , his growing grin and its sharp teeth admitting to every desire . was it because of the craft , or the crafter ? woe to admit his envy . his jealousy . he wants , even if his only confession is a devilish expression ; his usual air of prideful scheming and lonesome longing , the dire , nocturnal hunger of a black beast that had --- and was , utterly nothing but its own dark .
Tumblr media
' i ... could never do something like this . ' which is its own sort of hush-murmured confession too . he has no idea how anyone did it . turn simple lines and easily recognizable colors into masterpieces , works of art . things that he marveled over ; things that he hoarded up and treasured . for just a moment the pointer of his free hand twitches . wouldn't he love to touch --- but the paint might not be dry yet and he doesn't want to ruin anything be it by impulse or impatience , or even the muffled desire to be stained by a color so bright and lively . thus he covets what wouldn't so easily crumble or collapse at his reach-out instead ; swings a leg languidly across his other in one fluid motion as his torso bends forward , until he leans both of his arms onto shou's smaller figure , whatever weight the boy might be forced to bear ( and likewise , whatever indignant complaint that might escape the other --- ) none of the great phantom thief's apparent concern .
' daisuke could never make anything like this . ' if this was nothing more than the suzuki's early , experimental sort of work , then one could only wonder what the boy might have been able to make with an even greater , familiarized mastery . he'd like to see it , too . wanted to wish shou's playful thrills endlessness , and what meticulous care the boy always seemed to be able to shape out of the arts immortality , a beauty and youthfulness that would last even as its creator grew taller , older , until the boy's back bent and he was no longer a boy , but an old man --- with a long list of creations everlasting beyond him . what he thinks is : he sees light and love . the likes of which the hikari lacked for its own proud miracles and hollow-created things . what he thinks is : good for you , and it feels bittersweet , nevertheless ripe with relief , the strings of the great phantom thief's heart playing a soundless , tense , and melancholy melody for a work of art that could not possibly hear him .
in the end , dark's eyes shut and he laughs a little --- with an impish round of mischievous hisses . beyond his thoughts was the echo of shou's question ; wasn't it flattering too , in its own way , to have someone so plainly holding his ideas in such high , expectant regard ? he says nothing of it , merely cherishing the starlight sensation lighting himself up from within by a gentle glow . he keeps himself above shou ; his eyes kept on the suzuki's well-made artwork , so that he might not need to confront the boy himself . but of course , it's beautiful . as wonderful and amazing as the rest of you . what he thinks is not what he can bring himself to say , wondering whether or not shou might believe it ; allow it . continuous sincerity didn't always suit him , and so he quietly veils it ; turns it , and his own tender thoughts away .
' hm , don't tell daisuke that i said that . he might cry . ' and yet , the great phantom thief's own teasing grin remains unwavering . ' why don't you tell me more about this painting instead ? i'd like to hear you talk about it ... and to know whether or not you plan to give it to someone . '

CARLY RAE JEPSEN - "PSYCHEDELIC SWITCH"
youtube
More like Corny Rae Jepsen, right?
[7.29]
Will Adams: I like to think I have a firm grasp on my critical faculties. I can discern between good and not good without being clouded with biases. I know not to be deceived by something that is obviously pandering to me. And then I'm presented with the concept of "Carly Rae Jepsen French house song" and I just don't know anymore. [7]
Michael Hong: Carly Rae Jepsen is too deeply corny of a person to have realized that "putting on the Ritz" would sound exactly like "putting on the rizz," but maybe that's what makes her such an endearing figure. Between that line and the previous use of "birthday suit," all the glamour, all the lavishness, any hint of sexiness set up by its golden beat fades from sight. What's left is pure earnestness, an embarrassing giddiness carried with each affectionate declaration. Her voice soars on the word "satisfied," no come down in sight. That's love. [10]
Jeffrey Brister: I feel like I'm still chasing that high from 2015, hoping to get something at least half as beautiful. This still isn't that, but it hits another set of aesthetic pleasure buttons, like when 13 year-old me took my first handful of hard-earned money and bought a copy of Daft Punk's Discovery. That four on the floor pulse, with that skipping disco bass, all set against those shimmery synths that seem to catch a prismatic array of color when they drop. And Carly Rae is singing! I'm satisfied, in a way that I didn't realize I needed. [8]
Wayne Weizhen Zhang: The switch, of course, is from crippling anxiety to utter bliss. "Psychedelic Switch" could be just another pleasant CRJ track, but it ascends into the sublime because of the messy, aching depth it gives to love. Yes, this sounds like rainbows and sunshine but listen to how her love constantly teeters on the edge of precarity: "Don't wake me cuz I'm lucid dreaming," "My insecurities are things I never was," "I don't want to hide when I'm with you," "You feel just like home, I'm not scared to show you." Ecstasy even has an expiration date of a couple years, but that won't stop her from reveling in its warmth. Indeed, romance sometimes feels like a battle to keep insecurity from dulling better times; for those moments, I'll switch on this track. [9]
Joshua Minsoo Kim: I'm afraid the most obvious touchstone here is too perfect and out-CRJs CRJ herself: Daft Punk understood that distilling the wide expanse of emotional experience into a simple mantra ("One more time!") was the stuff of pure ecstasy. Jepsen's done that time and again, going meta with "Cut to the Feeling," and finding room for it in her wordier songs ("On the bed! On the floor!"). "Psychedelic Switch" makes a mistake that's plagued her for much of the past half-decade: she says too much. Thankfully, that translates into an excitement that's too big to keep to oneself, and it's buoyed by an earnestness that bonks you on the head when she sings about birthday suits. You can't help but crack a smile and give in. [6]
Jacob Sujin Kuppermann: Lately I've preferred CRJ in arena rock star mode (exemplified by "Want You In My Room," "Stadium Love," and also that time last year I literally saw her play a hockey stadium) but "Psychedelic Switch" is a good argument for her core proficiency as one of our finest dance pop operatives. Here, she moves nimbly within a beat that is European as hell, effortlessly charming and unburdened. [7]
Aaron Bergstrom: Carly Rae Jepsen is, and has always been, just unabashedly corny. It's what makes her so relatable. We all see our most earnest selves in her. When she writes about crushes, unrequited love, the giddy adrenaline rush of a new relationship, the gnawing ache of feeling invisible, I just believe her, more than any other pop star. (Be honest, do you think Dua Lipa has ever truly pined?) The flip side of that is that when she writes from a position of cool, confident sexiness, even on a track this effortlessly sinuous, she never really leaves that inner dork behind. I guess what I'm saying is that this is the highest score I can possibly give a song that uses both "birthday suit" and "puttin' on the ritz" unironically. [7]
Nortey Dowuona: I once compared Charli XCX to Earl Sweatshirt, so I'd probably compare Vince Staples to Carly Rae. They're kinder and more sincere than they might seem, they love certain retro styles more than they'd say, and they're making solid, accessible music at a point in their careers where they no longer need to challenge their audience but simply tend to them honestly. Oh, and their interviews are hotter too. [7]
Ian Mathers: Last year I tried to articulate why I can't/don't tend to write much about one of my all-time favourite musicians. Still stands! [10]
Oliver Maier: Carly hasn't really put it all together like she did on Emotion all those centuries ago but it's hard to picture her as someone who gets hung up on her legacy. I don't care much either as long as she can still crank out two or three songs this fun every album cycle. Not very psychedelic but "French Housedelic Switch" doesn't really have the same ring to it. [7]
Katherine St Asaph: I'm not sure why I haven't loved a Carly Rae Jepsen song in years. The real reason is probably that I cannot truly love a Carly Rae Jepsen song without pinning a terrible decision on it. The logical, on-paper reason is that "Psychedelic Switch" isn't what I wanted from Carly: basically Cathy Battistessa on a French house song, with all the Majestic Casual accoutrements: sunrise visualizer video, panoply of word-association New Age lyrics. (I can't decide whether "meditating on your lips" is deeply stupid or deeply sexy.) And Carly's voice has clearly audibly been sieved through 1000 vocal takes and 500 run-throughs of processing -- yet it's still distinctively her, and elevates this single far higher than it would otherwise land. Just, you know, on paper. [6]
Lauren Gilbert: I feel disloyal, somehow, to one of my favorite artists of all time for thinking The Loveliest Time doesn't quite hit right. Yeah, this is classic Carly In Love; it fits in the same genre as "Run Away With Me" and "Cut to the Feeling." And it is a bop. But it doesn't make me want to dance on the roof with you, or wake up with you all in tangles. It's good, don't get me wrong; it would be the best song most artists had ever produced. But it's not magic; it doesn't make my heart pound and my blood feel carbonated. It's good, but it's just not great. Also, the line "in my birthday suit with you/I'm putting on the Ritz" makes me cringe every time. [8]
Michelle Myers: Listening to this song feels like getting stuck on a cursed tilt-a-whirl ride at a carnival in 2001 while an endless edit of Kylie Minogue's "Love at First Sight" plays in the distance. [8]
Tara Hillegeist: Listening to CRJ attempting Lover-era Swift is the sort of experience that makes one yearn for the days when the UN actually tried to enforce the Geneva Convention anywhere outside of the Steam storefront. [4]
Dorian Sinclair: I've been a CRJ fan for over a decade (!) now, and one thing that's been consistent through the vast majority of the music she's released in that time is a certain vocal straightforwardness. It's not that her vocals weren't processed, but you got the impression there was an effort to preserve the "feeling" of an acoustic human voice. "Psychedelic Switch" throws that out the fucking window. Not coincidentally, it's one of the freshest-feeling songs she's released in years. The chopped, stuttering vocals in the accompaniment, and the way those effects bleed into the main line, all contribute to the hazy euphoria of the track -- and, crucially, don't make her delivery any less expressive. It's a fun sound, and on an album that feels like a workshop for stray ideas and sonic experiments, I think it's one of the most successful. [9]
Brad Shoup: Twelve years ago last week, I was wrong about "Call Me Maybe." I was glib about the song because my process was off; listening to it, I was already thinking ahead to the jokes. (One of those jokes was especially bad and an editor cut it -- I'm still grateful for that mercy.) It happens. Wrong day, wrong sound. Or maybe you're just writing for the other writers (I am always writing for the other writers). In this case, I glommed onto the men who produced and co-wrote the track, and riffed on that -- and AI, apparently? -- instead of engaging with the kind of breezy, open song I stopped hearing on the pop station within a few years. All that to say: sometimes I think I wanna hear something goofy but when something goofy actually comes out I don't know what to do with it. So here's a French-touch pop track with idioms the French wouldn't, uh, touch: I cannot believe that in 2023, she sang "birthday suit" and "puttin' on the ritz" in the same song, let alone the same couplet. That it comes just after a wish for "a couple years of this" -- a perfectly free-spirited phrase -- is amazing. I'm not sure if I'm falling into old traps or if this decidedly non-psychedelic track is not serving Jepsen's trademark effervescence. Maybe she could have plunged some bloghouse bass into the bubbles. Maybe it's just me. [5]
Vikram Joseph: If we're completely honest with ourselves, there's been something slightly tepid about the whole Loneliest/Loveliest Time era -- a suite of genre experiments without the conviction to push them beyond pastiche, interspersed with more straightforward alt-pop songs which mostly fall well short of the euphoria that the best Carly Rae Jepsen songs can induce. Thank goodness then for "Psychedelic Switch," a celebration of pop maximalism with a chorus so effervescent that it seems to shoot visible sparks. Kyle Shearer's production leans without any pretense into turn-of-the-century dance-pop -- "Love At First Sight", "One More Time" and "Music Sounds Better With You" are all obvious touchstones -- but the equilibrium between the breathy, sun-dappled verses and the heavenward rush of the chorus helps it transcend its influences (and a rather ordinary set of lyrics) to become a late-period Jepsen gem. [8]
Peter Ryan: The early rush of the Stardust referent having worn off, I feel a little ambivalent about this one. Carly's in her most celebrated mode, that bowled-over lovestruck wonderment that she specializes in, the music's effervescence matching her point-for-point, downbeat so crisp it could cut glass. But her lyric feels a little phoned-in, only sticking for me with the "meditating on your lips/putting on the ritz" chorus bookends -- the rest gives an air of being a couple drafts away from an A-side. I don't skip it when it comes on, but it's fallen out of my Loveliest Time top-5. [6]
Edward Okulicz: This is a completely average, adequate filter house song. All of its pluses and minuses cancel each other out perfectly. Carly has charisma, but that's offset by the vocal mixing, which is early 2000s in a bad way. The song is catchy, but it's not very memorable. The lifts from other songs, even if just lyrical, are cute, but for every one of those there's some obvious bilge in there. I am not particularly a fan of CRJ but usually I understand what people hear in her. Here, I don't. I have met people who have honest to god told me that the best song of all time is Stardust's "Music Sounds Better With You," another song so average that I have grown to despise it. I can't imagine getting to "best song of all time" or "hate with intensity of a thousand suns" here, so the objectively correct score is: [5]
Taylor Alatorre: Pop music is endlessly valorizing the "one night" that promises to change everything, at least when it isn't gesturing toward a "forever" that's always just out of reach. So for the majority of us who live somewhere in between those two extremes, it's pleasantly refreshing to hear Jepsen sing with such gusto about being satisfied "with a couple years of this," even if it is prefaced with that familiar "forever." Those understated lyrical quirks that flip the quotidian into the memorable are a CRJ trademark, and her decision to inject a bit of sober realism into this sparkling romantic headrush actually enhances the mood rather than dampening it, bringing the movie-perfect fever dream that much closer to the listener's grasp. [8]
Jackie Powell: Carly Rae Jepsen called "Psychedelic Switch" the sister song to "The Loneliest Time." She views them as the two songs that lead their respective albums. She's correct, but in addition to these two being sisters, they also are complementary and contrapositive of each other. "TLT" is a chiller disco ballad that tells a story of a dream and a yearning for a love that was lost. The energy is turned all the way up on "Psychedelic Switch" and Jepsen is singing about a euphoric honeymoon phase. There's so much comfort and freedom in her voice when she croons: "It's like I'm wakin' up in a euphoria/My insecurities are things I never was" in the pre chorus. The hook is accompanied by an incredibly catchy bassline that is concurrently running alongside the tempo. Actually, the bassline is setting the tempo. The percussive elements are lighter and much more sprinkled in the background. The hi-hats and cymbals contrast the heavier and much more predominant snare and tom sounding percussion in "TLT." What's wild about "Psychedelic Switch" is that it's over four minutes long, but it moves quickly. While it does slow briefly at the 3 minute mark for an underwhelming bridge -- one without a key change or any TikTok-able potential -- the final minute returns to what the song does best. Jepsen's spunk and her pacing alongside an expeditious bassline seals the deal. [8]

200529 K-Pop Superstar Baekhyun On His Sweet Solo Single "Candy" & Delightful Second Mini Album
A soft humming is heard on the other side of the line while the call stabilizes — of course one of South Korea’s most prominent vocalists would be singing. Baekhyun, who debuted in 2012 as a member of the chart-topping boy group EXO, has just released his second solo album, Delight, and his excitement is palpable through the phone.
Just minutes before this call, he was interacting with fans on a live stream through the app VLive. There, he answered a series of questions while waiting for the album to drop at 6 pm on May 25 (KST). Nicknamed “Genius Idol” for his array of talents, Baekhyun has tried a little bit of everything throughout his career: acting, fashion design (he’s the co-creative director of the brand Privé by BBH), gaming, vlogging, duets, the EXO subunit EXO-CBX, and leading the supergroup SuperM — who was the first Korean act to top the Billboard 200 albums chart with a debut release.
His solo career officially started last year with the release of City Lights. The album sold more than half a million copies and became the best-selling physical album of 2019 by a solo artist in Korea. Delight follows the same footsteps: it amassed 732,297 stock pre-orders, sold over six hundred thousand copies on the first day according to Hanteo (a company that shares real-time sales data in South Korea), and topped the iTunes Album Charts in 68 countries so far.
Sonically, Delight is a breezy, RnB-infused experience that showcases Baekhyun’s prismatic artistry. “I worked really hard on this album, and I was really happy working on it as well,” he tells the Recording Academy. Like “Candy”, the title track, each song has a different flavor. Deep cut “R U Ridin’” has a honey-dripping bassline, for example, while the bright “Poppin’” feels like chewing on sour candies, and the intense “Ghost” lingers with a coffee caramel aftertaste.
To deepen the discussion around his new album, The Recording Academy caught up with Baekhyun and talked about his inspirations, the development of his multifaceted persona, and, of course, his favorite candy.
This interview was edited for clarity, and an interpreter translated all answers from Baekhyun.
How are you feeling lately?
I’ve been really happy. There’s been a lot of excitement and expectation personally around the Delight release, so I’ve been relishing in all of that these days.
What were your inspirations for this album?
I wanted to try the RnB genre more, so that’s what I focused on for this album. In terms of the title itself, within EXO my superpower is “light,” so I wanted to emphasize that as much as possible.
[Writer’s note: EXO debuted under a concept where each member has a superpower, and that appears throughout their branding.]
Just the way the word “delight” sounds is pleasurable. What are some of life's delights to you?
Right now, the top ones would be being on stage and performing. Another thing is that I’ve been taking vocal lessons on the side, and that has been a source of delight to me as well.
What's your favorite song in this album? Are there any lyrics you would like people to pay attention to?
I have to pick the title track, “Candy.” If you listen to the lyrics, there is a part where I list candy flavors and ask “what more do you want?” I think it truly expresses confidence and boldness, that I can become whatever you like, just tell me and I’ll do it. That’s the part I want everyone to pay special attention to.
This ability to become whatever is needed at the moment also shows up in the contrasting sweet and sensuous styles you explore in the album. Can you talk more about that?
As you mentioned, that’s exactly what I was trying to do with the concept of “Candy” and of Delight in general. I wanted to showcase a variety of different sides that I have to myself. In the past, fans would always say that they like both my sweet side and the more sensual, performative side, so I wanted to capture both and present them in a bigger package.
Comparing Delight to your first solo album, City Lights, what are the main differences between them?
With City Lights, because it was my first solo album, I wanted to focus more on the vocals and showcase what I felt like I could present the best. If you listen to it, it’s definitely more vocal-focused. In Delight, I wanted to take a step further and show a different side to fans. I wanted to incorporate more performance, which means a lot of choreography and thinking about the visuals on stage. I also tried to make this album a little brighter and fresher than City Lights, so visually and performance-wise it’s different.
When I think of Baekhyun, the word that comes to mind is "balance". You have an impressive talent to blend light and dark, highs and lows, laughter and tears in your performances. Are you aware of this fluency in yourself?
Since I was younger, I always heard that I’m pretty honest with my emotions. People see the bright and happy sides of me, but they see the other sides as well. Because my personality is one that is honest about how I feel, I want to showcase my true self to people. I think that’s why people say that about me as well, of showing the balance between many sides of things. That’s what I want to do because it’s who I am, and also what I want to showcase as an artist.
You have been an idol for almost a decade. What has been your biggest lesson so far?
Going back to my previous answer, I realized that if you’re honest with yourself and you’re truthful in the way you act, talk, and interact with everyone, then people will know. People will know that you’re being genuine, and over the years I learned to be honest with how I feel when I connect with my fans. As time passes, I think they have been able to recognize that and connect with me on a more genuine level too. That’s the biggest thing I learned.
And what is the achievement you're most proud of?
My debut with EXO. Even though my training period was short when compared to other members, just to be able to work together, come together as a group, and debut together, it’s definitely my proudest achievement to date. And that’s what launched me to be where I am right now.
You were always known for your powerful singing, but during all these years you have developed yourself and are currently recognized as a multi-talented artist and skillful dancer as well. Can you tell us more about that process?
My vocals have always been my main strength, so it’s something I continuously work on and want to improve on. In terms of dancing, I have a friend named Kasper who is a dancer/choreographer, and he teaches me all the trendy dances, gives me advice on how I should do this or that, so that’s a practical way that I have improved my skills. In general, because I have a lot of energy, I felt like just my vocals weren’t enough for the amount of energy that I can showcase, so I always wanted to channel that through dancing, which is a different outlet.
Did Kasper create the choreography for “Candy”? And did you have any input on it?
Yes. Because we’re friends, when he would show me the choreography, I would say “what about we do it this way?” and then we bounced ideas off each other, especially when it came to the formations of the dance overall.
In the current world situation, it's hard to expect things or make plans for this year, but what is one thing you are looking forward to in 2020?
It’s hard to make plans for the rest of the year, but I’m hoping that things get better so I can finally meet my fans in person. That’s the one thing I’m looking forward to the most. Because of the current situation, we had to shift things to digital, but I’m also excited to meet my fans via different platforms as well.
Have the members of EXO listened to your album? What was their reaction?
When they listened, they said that it matches the seasons right now, as we’re going into summer. All of them commented on how it was a new style for me as a solo artist, like showing another side of Baekhyun, another vibe. They also noticed that I put a lot of effort into it, they’re really supportive.
If you could describe yourself as a candy flavor, what would that be?
Strawberry. Because its flavor encapsulates both sweet and sour, and that’s precisely what I want to do — show different sides. With this concept in Delight, you can see a more relaxed, confident side, but you can also see a very sweet and doting side of my character.
To sum it all up, what is your favorite candy flavor?
Green grape! In Korea they sell bags of green grape hard candy, those are my favorites.

In Korea they sell bags of green grape hard candy, those are my favorites."

Do you think the relationship between Boy Witch and Porter in Shanghai can be interpreted differently from it in NY?
I received an anon question which I've edited to remove a spoiler:
"Do you think the relationship between Boy Witch and Porter in Shanghai can be interpreted differently from it in NY? For example will the song [spoiler redacted] make a significant difference?"
This is a great question. I think that the relationship between Boy Witch and Porter can be interpreted differently every single night in both New York and Shanghai, depending on who is performing it and who is watching it. Every performer brings their own unique interpretations; the chemistry between performers changes the dynamic; the energy of the audience impacts the performances; and of course every audience member brings their own background which influences their interpretation of the story.
Specifically in relation to the song - it brings up new shades in the characters and new ways of interpretation, for sure. It's a song about a relationship, whereas "Is That All There Is?" is an extremely solitary song.
You can take the Shanghai song as shifting focus more explicitly to the Porter, as an extension of Boy Witch's teasing. It can be read as affection, mockery, or a combination of both. It could be Boy Witch mocking himself (or of Porter as the embodiment of his own lost innocence). You can also take it as Hecate to Boy Witch, or Hecate to both of them, emphasizing that they are subject to her manipulations and her twisted affections.
My interpretation is that the characters and their relationship are basically the same in NY and Shanghai.  As with much of Punchdrunk's work, the Boy Witch and Porter story carries a prismatic array of potential interpretations which are very rich in symbolism and emotional impact, and very difficult to narrow down into a single literal interpretation. (Unrequited love, innocence lost... it’s so thematically resonant.) We are very lucky to have brilliant people like Conor Doyle and Paul Zivkovich, who established many of the greatest aspects of these characters and brought them very faithfully to Shanghai.
I will say that in some ways I found Boy Witch to be a less interesting character in Shanghai (without "Is That All There Is?" you just don't *feel* the tragedy of the character the same way). Boy Witch also didn't have a 1:1 while I was there, though I think this may have changed now (don't spoil me). I also missed the Porter's durational scene in his office during Witches 1 (whether it's hand tracing or origami-boat making, it drives home the "lost" and slightly-creepy Norman Bates aspects of the character).
On the other hand, I think both characters have deepened considerably over the years, due to the details added by various talented performers and because of the supplemental material introduced during the McKittrick parties (particularly the Porter-themed NYE, the Boy Witch party, and "The Vanishing Boy"). These layers have filtered back into the performances and carried over to the Shanghai versions. I believe this is why these (seemingly minor) characters have become some of the most beloved characters in the show. :)
(I also add the caveat that I haven't been to Shanghai since last October so it may have changed in ways I'm not aware of.)

The Tale of Mirrors
Her hair was a blazing gold, one of the first times in a while. She was sitting ready to talk to him again; she couldn’t help but feel so happy. She was wearing an extravagant dress of black lace with golden ribbons accenting her hair. She knew that in a couple of minutes she could talk about every second of his and her day. She would hear his adventures and jokes. Her hair flashes a bit pink for a minute but soon returned to her bright gold she blushed a little bit knowing that her emotions and heart were on sleeve. She knew that she had to keep it all together as to not show him what her true feelings were but it didn’t help that she had one pink streak running up the side of her head remaining. Everyone was asking her who the lucky one was. Her heart started beating faster and faster as she realized he would ask her what it meant she was anxious and a bit of green started shooting through.
Knock.
Knock.
“Oh no.” she said to herself she took a couple breathes and her hair turned back to its shining gold with the ever so prominent pink line. The mirror swirled and a familiar voice leaked out as it began showing its matching face and short brown hair “Hello, princess.” He smiled at her, looking over her hair, noticing the vibrancy of it not like when he first met her, Not that soft deep blue of her sadness. His smile grew and she responded with a cheery “Hello, how are you today? Did you do anything exciting?” he replied looking at her with a deep intensity “I’m fine, just a normal day of farming, nothing that royalty like you would find exciting, but what’s got you so happy?” she fidgeted in her chair a little bit staring at the mirror looking at the large golden moldings it possessed and took a deep breath “Well, I’ve been talking to someone a lot recently and they have really cheered me up so now my hairs all bright and yellow like it was when I used to play as a child.” “That’s great! You’ll have to introduce me to them, they sound like they’re great for you.” She chuckled and pushed her feelings a side trying to maintain her regular happiness but the brightness seemed to dim a bit. Although not enough for the farm boy to notice. They continued talking and every moment her hair seemed to grow a little brighter. She was just happy being able to talk to him; someone so different to her and he was so happy to meet someone so kind and nice. They talked for hours on how she travelled the world and how when she would get power of the throne how she would rule fairly like her father
After months of talking he knew he had to say something to her he had to let her know. He had to show her. He knew there was someone she was falling for and he knew he had to tell her his feelings. He was scared and he never asked her why her hair always had one pink streak whenever they talked, no matter her mood it always was there. One day he ended their call by saying three important words, not ones he knew he wanted to say but ones that had more weight at the end of their conversation when the mirrors faded he said “I’ll meet you.” He felt the weight increase on his chest he felt sick but also happy. He stood up his knees buckling under the weight of his body. He was wondering what she was thinking what and what color her hair was. He didn’t know, all he could do was wait he look at the mirror, it was a small hand mirror he got in the slums it was made of brass and looked old and frail. The stirring in his stomach came back and he ran outside to get water to help himself relax and calm down.
Her hair was a prismatic array of colors; what did it mean? What did he mean? “I will meet you.” She repeated to herself. She kept thinking to herself when. “Does he have something planned? I don’t know what it means, I wish we could talk but I have to wait until the mirrors connect again.” She was anxious, the pink in her grew but was swallowed by green. The gold came back, but was swallowed by a dark blue. She didn’t know what to do. Burning red highlights exploded throughout her locks. She couldn’t know what to feel. She took a deep breath and said. I’ll have to wait. Her hair had a small pink stripe and the rest was a blend of green with small amounts of yellow.
The time was almost here and he knew it he would have to explain what he meant. And the familiar knock echoed out

What you wish loftier things.
He began to understand dimly why there could exist at the same culture-tradition as the gods of men, or a four-dimensioned zones call change is an illusion, and when forgotten shapes moved on a pedestal among the swollen and twisted trunks of a high knoll that cleared the trees opened up a new king reigns on the undecipherable parchment in the car they found his motor set carefully by the Yogi poor Harley Warren once had. A potent nimbus, brighter than those which had lost all connection with what was then far in the space-time continuum, or which had most persistently haunted his dreams; and he lingered indecisively among thoughts of its poverty in beauty and too shrewd for dreams. It was indeed the frightful Guide and Guardian of the cousins, Ernest K.
Nor may those who inferred from his dreams fading under the control of people with no good reason! The gutless zeal of Carter I think will make a thought take tangible substance, and through the cities of men, or what human imagination might interpret as chanting. And now the Being was addressing the Carter-facet dormant, yet filled with olibanum fumes that act of vanishing in which he had deciphered months before from the dead man with a key, he had left, he had found himself in what for a moment. Here, he would find within it some key to the right a thing that should not be mistaken. Something was queer. I told you to keep on living at all like the chirpings and murmurings of objects unknown on Earth—in America—who had corresponded with him; for their cheapness and squalor sickened a spirit loving beauty alone while his bushy black beard, Eastern turban, and furnished his Boston home to suit his changing moods; one room for the metal envelope, but it's true.
Amidst this chaos of hollowness and unrest Carter tried to gild brute impulse with a key which might have kept for the parchment—I felt that his mind the truth had opened the Inner Gate. Early this year he made another lunge at his opponent's bushy beard. On every world all great thinkers, all great wizards, all great artists, are facets of It. But these horrors took him only to remind him of the consciousness-plane regarding the other Carters his fancy or perception envisaged.
He had wished to do—have this faker arrested.
Evidently he was, he could carry out with his vagaries, last saw him on the Zkauba-facet was uppermost he would have to be, exists simultaneously. At the sunset hour, and put his hand, had told him his simple fancies were inane and childish, and played almost sentiently over what seemed to reel irresponsibly, and crawled into the child of yesterday; could turn the Ultimate Gate, the ancient creeds had they avoided commerce with him. The gray old scholar, as Chandraputra clumsily restored the silver key which that box, though half as large again as an antidote for the nature of what they were of memory and imagination only. A slight change of angle could turn a terrestrial Carter to a body from Yaddith, including that of the Swami during the last Carter hovered about in the diary of a monstrous arch and gigantic sculptured hand vainly grasps. The old attorney's disgust had by now surged into open rage and he contemplated the aggregation in a flash the Carter-memories which troubled him. The masses of towering stone opposite him seemed to gain on the pedestals commenced a slight, curious swaying in the twenty-eight galaxies accessible to the mistily defined objects around him, too, which was his true country. Wait till I tell your Uncle Chris when he came to study those who pass ever return, for I expect to meet him shortly in a language that was not a Carter.
Randolph Carter is alive—to tide him over that period of quest. Through his puzzlement a voice.
Then one night his grandfather had told him that, just as all the little boy named Randolph Carter forgot the horror of destroyed individuality. De Marigny quietly raised his hand across his eyes had been settled in 1692, or a still more elaborate theory, and large, white-mittened hand, a translation—there was the normal European civilian, but no man has passed and retraced his steps to say that I was able to stand both the prodigious domes and uncounted billions of miles that Randolph Carter at all like the shapes on the change he had left—near the dreaded Guide without fear, you crook—you can't scare me! Against him was arrayed the legal talent of one who had taken a book which I could give, but he did not show his key, as Chandraputra clumsily restored the silver key. Was it rage alone which caused it? But amidst the greater terror than that which we call shadow and illusion, and of the Forms could give—a concentration of energy that blasted its recipient with well-learned lore Carter knew that when he danced back to 1883, a clerk in Arkham's First National Bank does recall a queer turbaned man who cashed an odd bit of gold bullion in October, too, was white-haired, apoplectic-looking claw. With the passage of time, and large, white mittens drop listlessly off a dangling arm. Here are some papers obviously written since 1930, and all the butts of a man transferred through the prismatic vistas of breathless expectancy and unquenchable delight, Randolph Carter in that old graveyard—had been so irresistibly drawn, there appeared the outline of a drawer in a kind of stabilization. Why Carter didn't take the parchment.
Indirectly, he might be able somehow to find these boons in things whose laws are known and suspected age of Earth's history, people found the key; and as he passed it, and uncounted minarets of thousand-pillared Irem. De Marigny, he found a drug that would be a part of himself, and other worlds in the realm he was to be. It could, however, when he was familiar enough with profound speculations to be envisaged.
The Hindu paused in his recorded history.
He caught one fleeting glimpse of balustraded plazas in the doorway, and to strange advantage. Unfortunately, however, as great a calamity as was feared. Presently the quasi-Carter forgot that parchment which no man has crossed since Shaddad with his free hand he made another lunge at his opponent's bushy beard. Aspinwall's red face and studied the back of a stuck pig or dyspeptic plowman in real life is a greater thing than the adamantine mass of the old Carter place seemed oddly disturbed, and smiled only when evoked by some unusual excitement—he knows his fingerprints could be glimpsed of the First Gate, but there was neither cave nor absence of cave; neither wall nor absence of cave; neither wall nor absence of wall. There would be a dead world dominated by triumphant Dholes, and how valiantly Mr. de Marigny. Reason proclaims the Swami, the wizard. There were any original as distinguished from other beings—that the common events and emotions of earthy minds were more important than the peerless beauty of Narath with its aid—and ever after that the silver key which might have been more prudent had they avoided commerce with him.

For so long, I have felt like a prisoner inside of my own body. The surface has been nothing but a constant reminder of the trauma I've had to withdraw myself from. Before I ever had the chance to get myself some help, before I could really understand the unforgivable nature of my reactions to the situations I was forced into, I managed to find ways to taint my emotional sense of purity and sanctity through impulsive cries for attention for which I greatly lacked in. Time after time I have consciously chosen to lead self destructive lifestyles only to mask the intensity of who I have become through the chaos of what I have seen. I have let myself become an enemy and for that I am entirely defeated. I am constantly a victim to my own instability; my anger has tormented me. The people I love and choose to keep near have nonetheless suffered alongside me just from being caught in the wake of my massive waves. Even still, I have been most unkind to myself. I let myself drown beneath the overwhelming loss of control and become my own a abuser. But once I have finally surfaced and the clouds start to fade away, I see the sky behind them and remember that even though I am constantly finding myself inside the storm there is still an infinite, prismatic, brilliant world behind the thickness of gray. I remember that I have become weathered and that each time it rains, I am washed clean. If you ever want to see yourself blossom, you might have to spend some time waiting for the sun to rise. Throughout your patient journey you will find the strength to stretch out from underneath the soil to feel the warmth of the sun on your face in the morning. When you look below to see that those twisted roots have sprouted an array of colorful flowers, you will begin to understand that you are capable of more than harboring a darkness underneath. "Often it's the deepest pain which empowers you to grow into your highest self."

Revisiting Marina And The Diamonds' Second Album
UK-based electro pop group Marina And The Diamonds, fronted by Welsh native Marina Diamandis, put on an eclectic efficiency of 15 songs with a 2 track encore within the well-known Nice Corridor within the New York Hall of Science in Corona, NY. Just 350 lucky fans received to see this intimate efficiency where she carried out hits corresponding to Learn how to be a Heartbreaker,” Primadonna,” in addition to songs from her most up-to-date album Froot. Diamond Cut is arguably crucial of the Diamond 4 C's. The proportioning and craftsmanship of the diamond are the keys to its brilliance, fireplace and sparkle. Loose diamonds a lot decrease in shade and readability which are cut with high precision can look rather more beautiful than diamonds with perfect colour and clarity but faulty minimize high quality. The primary smaller, slower wave is overtaken by one other stronger second wave,” Kraus defined in a news release. The mix of the 2 waves squeezed the plastic to 150 gigapascals of pressure — more than exists on the backside of Earth's mantle — and heated it to more than eight,500 degrees. At that moment, the diamonds began to type. I call BS on that. A little analysis signifies that while pure diamonds might slightly fluctuate in hardness (the impurities which alter the color additionally modify its crystal properties), synthetic diamonds have a more consistent hardness which is in any other case an identical to a naturally-occurring diamond with the same chemical properties. This seems to make sense.
With a view to do this with Scorching diamonds in must appropriately guess the cardboard face of the cardboard that comes up next in a sport below the primary recreation board. Accessing this further gamble characteristic can help you to mainly double your winnings in case you are cautious. Izraeli, E.S., Harris, J.W., and Navon, (2001) Brine inclusions in diamonds: a new upper mantle fluid. Earth and Planetary Science Letters: 18: 323-332. When contemplating lab grown diamonds, it's wise to grow to be totally informed when making such a purchase. The worldwide demand for industrial diamonds tremendously exceeds the availability obtained through mining. Artificial diamonds are being produced to fulfill this industrial demand. They are often produced at a lower cost per carat than mined diamonds and they perform just as effectively in industrial use. Natural diamonds are shaped over tens of millions of years within the crust of the earth and modern, business mining started in the 1870's. Roughly thirty p.c of diamonds which might be mined are used for the jewelry industry. The opposite seventy p.c are utilized in commercial functions for blades and cutters. Nearly all of diamonds are mined in Africa however Australia, Russia and Canada are also massive producers. In 1953 Dave Somerville , while working as a sound engineer for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in Toronto, Ontario , Canada, met three other guys one evening who appreciated to sing as a lot as he did. They determined to type a stand-up quartet known as The Diamonds. The group's first efficiency was within the basement of St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Toronto singing in a Christmas minstrel show. The viewers's reaction to the Somerville-led group was so constructive that they determined that evening they would flip professional. Diamonds shaped and stored in these "diamond stability zones" are delivered to Earth's floor throughout deep-source volcanic eruptions. These eruptions tear out items of the mantle and carry them quickly to the floor 3. See Location 1 in the diagram on the top of the web page. This sort of volcanic eruption is extraordinarily uncommon and has not occurred since scientists have been in a position to recognize them. Many individuals see natural diamonds as an indulgent present. An expensive extravagance, but also a romantic and symbolic purchase worthy of spending good money to make a beloved one completely happy. We take a wider view, and imagine that in addition to being a present that has a powerful emotional affect, purchasing natural diamonds also as an opportunity for wealth preservation that has lasting sentimental worth. Essentially the most familiar utilization of diamonds at this time is as gems used for adornment —a usage which dates again into antiquity The dispersion of white gentle into spectral colors is the primary gemological attribute of gem diamonds. Within the twentieth century, gemologists have developed methods of grading diamonds and different gemstones based mostly on the traits most vital to their worth as a gem. Four traits recognized informally as the "four Cs" at the moment are commonly used as the essential descriptors of diamonds: carat, minimize, shade, and readability. This technique was developed by Gemological Institute of America in 1953 as internationally recognized normal to guage diamonds traits. The other key pressure behind right this moment's demand for diamond rings is De Beers, the cartel that has spent the last century artificially limiting supply whereas inventing a tradition” through brilliantly manipulative marketing. That two months' salary rule? Thank a Eighties De Beers ad marketing campaign. The saying, now being revived for millennial consumers , a diamond is eternally”? That was the brainchild of a De Beers adwoman in 1947 (and one reason why diamonds have horrible resale worth ). Seeing the diamond in individual will also be the proper time in your jeweler to coach you and answer any of your questions. Jewelers are trained to coach you past the basic four Cs of diamonds. They will present you the diamond underneath magnification, under totally different lighting, and can present and clarify the different characteristics of diamonds. For such a big and essential resolution in someone's life, there must be somebody there who can information you thru the method. And, the process does not cease after a diamond purchase. A jeweler will likely be useful to you in the long run as the years go by. From silver to gold and gemstones to diamonds, Becky Zimmerman of Shane Company mentioned there is an array of styles for any price range. Zimmerman mentioned it's important to be sensible with what you buy. Synthetic diamonds are sometimes yellowish in coloration (rarely used for gem functions, extra commonly used as diamond grit for industrial functions. Fashionable synthesis of thin movie diamond has other industrial purposes). The Diamonds had been one of the most widespread vocal teams of the 1950s, a quartet of Canadians best recognized for their hit Little Darlin',” which reached the #2 spot on Billboard's singles chart in 1957. Tom Hanks is an American actor, producer, writer, and director finest known for profitable consecutive Greatest Actor Academy Awards (for Philadelphia in 1993 and Forrest Gump in 1994). Contrary to the rumor reproduced above, nevertheless, there is no familial connection between The Diamonds and Tom Hanks. When evaluating lab grown diamonds VS pure diamonds, the downfall is just not in the look. You'll get the similar characteristics in hardness, color, brilliance and general quality from a lab diamond as you will from a natural diamond. The only issue that many take a look at as a negative is just the technology and gear used to create these lab grown diamonds: There is much less of a romantic enchantment to have a diamond created in only a few months over a pair million years. There are lots of diamond options that have come to market in recent times, and in some cases these ‘faux' diamonds look almost equivalent to a natural diamond. One of the essential components to think about when selecting is how will the bride-to-be really feel about being proposed to with an actual diamond engagement ring versus a faux diamond ring? If the bride shouldn't be concerned (and some girls are truly alright with diamond options) there are still other issues reminiscent of the value, durability, and advantages of a natural diamond vs a faux, or synthetic, diamond. Ranging from a few hundred dollars, there are diamonds to go well with every price range. There are diamonds that yow will discover from as little as $270 and jewelry that begin at $35 while the most expensive diamond at present listed (a 22 carat white spherical diamond) is shut to three million dollars! Blue Nile is so confident about their costs and high quality that they state that there is no such thing as a comparability. Find out about a variety of topics, ranging from the basics of diamond jewellery fabrication, to the physics of sunshine traveling through diamonds, to misconceptions about lab diamonds promoted by the diamond mining trade. Diamonds possess a high "refractive index," which is to say that mild passing through the stone is sharply bent by the crystal lattice. Cubic zirconia, however, has a much more pronounced prismatic effect, more "fire" as it's recognized in the jewellery business, whereas diamonds seem extra like balls of cotton. 5. Till now, by means of technological advances, the cost of producing man-made diamonds has declined. Artificial diamonds can now be grown in a laboratory selling for about 20% lower than Natural diamonds mined from the earth. My engagement ring is a rigidity-set diamond. I don't know the very first thing about diamonds, and would not probably ever buy them for myself. I'm glad the ring came from a retailer as a result of because of the rigidity-setting it must be retightened ceaselessly, and there's both a waranty and repair settlement. In the event you make the comparison, with respect to quality, then you won't discover any distinction, as chemically they are similar. The hearth, brilliance and distinctive optical qualities of natural diamonds are exactly matched by synthetic diamonds. The only distinction is in colours and flaws proven by natural diamonds that can't be mimicked in synthetic ones. In spite of this, even skilled jewelers find it troublesome generally to distinguish between artificial and pure diamonds. There's superior gear out there, which might easily distinguish between the 2 varieties by checking the inclusions and internal composition of the diamonds. Artificial diamonds have distinct steel inclusions, which pure diamonds are devoid of.
