Top 10 Most Underrated K-pop Songs of 2020 (Idol Edition)
Tumblr media
2020 was shit. But oh boy, at least the music was good.
And it took us a good while to decide on these lists.
Continuing with the K-Pop Timeout Tradition (see 2019 Ver) of listing the Top 10 Most Underrated K-Pop Songs because all the other sites are just bothered with the Top 10 that pretty much everyone will have heard of/have fan wars over, below are our top 10 picks of songs that did not rank high but deserves your attention!
Like last year we have a separate post for Top 10 underrated non-idol tracks in 2020 and a list for the Top 10 K-Dramas in 2020 in our opinion, which will drop in the coming days.
Some of the artists have escaped the list in recent years to stardom (like N.FLYING, SF9 and OH MY GIRL), so hopefully, it happens again!
This is in alphabetic order NOT in the order of awesomeness because all of them are awesome. Also, all MVs are linked in the song titles because Tumblr won’t let me share that many videos in one post.
APRIL “LALALILALA”
Tumblr media
APRIL is a very well-rounded girl group but their talents have been squandered by DSP’s mismanagement in recent years. With DSP seeming to try again and with member Naeun’s meteoric rise thanks to acting in webdrama hit “A-TEEN” and the internationally loved K-Drama “Extraordinary You”, “LALALILALA” seemed like the song to finally give APRIL the awards they deserve. Except it did not, which is an absolute shame because “LALALILALA” is easily one of the strongest girl group tracks this year. The futuristic synths and snappy drum instrumental made for a delightful pop track and reminded us of DSP’s heydays of churning out similarly pristine and impactful tracks for KARA and Rainbow. If you were a fan of past DSP girl group bops like KARA’s “Pandora” and "STEP”, this is the song for you!
Cherry Bullet “Hands Up”
Tumblr media
Whoever thought of putting “Beethoven” and “girl crush concept” together should get a raise at FNC Entertainment because it worked. Sampling Beethoven’s famous piece “Für Elise” in different parts of the instrumental using different instruments ranging from synths to different keyboards, the producer was able to provide rookie girl group Cherry Bullet with a hip-hop heavy girl crush banger that is catchy and fun. Also, it is clear the girls of Cherry Bullet really enjoy this song, exuding confidence and charm in the choreography and overall performance. After a few listens, you would be nodding to this addictive song and body rolling to the chorus. If you are a fan of girl crush songs, you have to listen to “Hands Up!”
Cignature “ASSA”
Tumblr media
Honestly, we are annoyed with C9 Entertainment scrapping the highly talented girl group Good Day after merely one song and their relatively strong run on KBS’ “The UNIT” and re-debuting only some of the girls in Cignature under their sub-label J9. However, we cannot deny that “ASSA” is a powerful track. It is many things at the same time - it covered the quirky girl group demographic with the cute and somewhat bratty sounding introduction where the girls seem to be talking and singing at the same time, then a somewhat mature buildup came out of nowhere with a more raspy and charismatic delivery on the vocals front before an aggressively girl crush drop begins the chorus carried by the members feeling themselves (specifically their hair) with attitude. If you love the quirky sound of fromis_9 and Oh My Girl but also want some OG girl crush energy like 4MINUTE, “ASSA” is your song!
CSVC “No Mercy”
Tumblr media
Okay, CSVC is not really an “idol” group in the traditional sense. A project group made up of 4 indie artists (CHEEZE's Dalchong, Stella Jang, Lovey and Park Moonchi), CSVC tries to recreate the 90s girl group sound of legends like S.E.S, Fink.L and Baby VOX and we are here for it. Not only do all four members have the pipes to carry the early K-Pop sound that has heavy RnB influences, they went all out in the song production with the retro reverbs littered throughout the track and new jack-swing inspired intro. The MV was also a love letter to 90s K-Pop girl groups with the intense use of flares, extreme use of lighting, the “futuristic” sets seemingly made of tin-foil and the members all donning all black or all white outfits. If you are a huge fan of 90s K-Pop, CSVC’s “No Mercy” is the song for you!
ELRIS “JACKPOT”
Tumblr media
Honestly, we have no idea what the hell HUNUS Entertainment is doing with ELRIS but even with the mismanagement, they continuously give ELRIS great songs and “JACKPOT” is easily one of the best girl group songs of the year. It builds up from silky vocals to strong rap, which is followed by wonderful harmonisation before we dive into a two-part chorus which made use of the members’ strong vocals as well as gave us catchy moments to sing along to. The music video is also a delight, with the girls dancing on a stage built to look like a roulette. The addition of the 2 members also made ELRIS’ already powerful stages even more impactful. We have been hearing rumours of disbandment but we hope it is not true. If you want to listen to the definition of a well-rounded and fun K-pop girl group track, ELRIS’ “JACKPOT” is THAT SONG!
IMFACT “Lie”
Tumblr media
IMFACT is truly a strong boy band with great vocals and strong song production skills of their own yet they CONTINUE to be SLEPT on. I mean being managed by Star Empire Entertainment does not help but it is ridiculous how little domestic and international support they have. They have a distinct sound which they continue in “Lie” - electropop infused with K-Pop song structures and a generous use of unique drums patterns. If you love electropop and K-Pop, it is time to stan IMFACT and check out this amazing song!
NATURE “Girls”
Tumblr media
Maybe n.CH Entertainment go a boost in Mnet money after taking on the job to manage TOO after Mnet’s “To Be World Klass” show because their budget really went up and it shows in NATURE’s “Girls”. This song is truly a masterpiece. The chorus is like what you would expect of a club banger EDM track but the verses are made up of clean vocals exhibiting anguish and longing over a relatively simple beat and the bridge was orchestral instrumentals mixed with the drumming of a marching band and the loud chants of the girls. The music video is also simple yet haunting. If you like the darker tracks of 9MUSES and RAINBOW like “Sleepless Night” and “Black Swan” but also the electronic sound of Berry Good in “Don’t Believe” days, this is the song for you for you!
ONEWE “End of Spring”
Tumblr media
We need more bands making it in mainstream K-Pop and ONEWE’s “End of Spring” gives us another reason why we think so. “End of Spring” is a breath of fresh air in this year of mainly 80s retro dance tracks and hip-hop heavy pop songs in the K-Pop world, as it instead went for a pop rock sound more reminiscent of American pop rock acts like Train in “50 Ways to Say Goodbye” and One Republic in “Counting Stars” but with a dose of the energy in a teen summer party. If you enjoy a fun pop rock song, ONEWE’s “End of Spring” is the song for you!
OnlyOneOf “dOra maar”
OnlyOneOf is a rookie group with a lot of potential given their heavily alternative RnB and overall escape room-esque sound. They had many great songs in 2020 with wonderful music videos but our favourite here at K-Pop Timeout has to be the MV-less “dOra maar”. This laid back and smooth song showcases each member’s unique vocals and sounds more like a top Korean RnB artist experimental collaboration than a K-Pop boy band song. Also, it is always fun to see K-Pop artists take inspiration from art and culture of different countries (the titular Dora Maar is a French photographer and the lover of Pablo Picasso). If you are mostly a Korean RnB fan, OnlyOneOf’s “dORa maar” might be your gateway drug into the idol scene!
Weki Meki “COOL”
Tumblr media
Fantagio seems to be a bit unsure about which sound to give Weki Meki, as the group swings between aggressive and catchy girl crush songs to more generic cute summer songs like a pendulum. They should really consider keeping Weki Meki with the sound they found in “COOL” because the girls really carried this supermodel runway power walk song with poise and confidence. While we have seen boy bands dabble in the runway model sound such as IN2IT in “Snapshot”, SF9 in “Now or Never” and KNK in “Sunset”, we have actually rarely seen girl groups going for this expensive sound. Additionally, the music video for this song is powerful, with the scene of the girls facing each other and vogueing in a long dark room being highly memorable. If you love power girl crushes or any of these boy band songs we have mentioned above, you would really like this song!
Special Mentions of Underrated Debuts:
There were many strong debuts this year and I would like to mention 2 underrated rookie groups to look out for in 2021!
Male - E’LAST “Tears of Chaos”
Tumblr media
While more and more male groups are debuting with either badass or cute images, E’LAST decided to enter the K-Pop world with a highly orchestral sound. And the boys have the talent and visuals to carry such a dramatic and theatrical concept. Their label E Entertainment, also seems to have every intent to do the most for these boys, as seen in the production quality of their MVs. With these boys already dropping new material right now, you all should keep an eye on them!
FEMALE - woo!ah! “Bad Girl”
Tumblr media
With many strong female group debuts this year, you may have missed woo!ah!, from the small label of NV Entertainment. This small company in fact is led by SM China’s former CEO and this person certainly has an eye for talent because woo!ah! is a very balanced 5 member girl group that has a lot of potential to make it big. In fact, the group is beginning to develop an international following, with “Bad Girl” reaching #1 in the Vietnam's biggest music platform, edging out both aespa’s “Black Mamba” and BLACKPINK’s “Lovesick Girls”. They have already followed up with B-Side track promotions so check out these underrated rookies!

A Light in the Dark
Idol: Lee Sem (9Muses)
Prompt: can i please request a scenario with lee sem from 9muses and fem reader where they are in a bird box type au where they can’t see each other but end up falling for each other ? u can make the end angsty if u want 🥺 thank u in advance !
Writer: Admin Kiwi
A/N: I always love when I get to write for groups I don’t usually get to write for, and this is a super interesting prompt on top of that! I doubt it’ll get many notes because people tend to skip idols they don’t know, but I worked really hard on it and I hope those of you who read enjoy!😊 P.S I’m using her real name Hyunjoo for this!
Warnings: This is a Bird Box au, so obviously there’s going to be mentions of death and suicide. I tried not to write anything too graphic, but it’s an integral part of the story so it’s there.
♡ Tip Jar♡
Tumblr media
Time passed differently when the whole world was dark and dead. Hyunjoo wasn’t sure exactly how long it had been since she put that black blindfold on, locking herself into a endless sea of darkness, but it had been long enough that she’d all but forgotten how light or the blue sky looked. All she knew was black cotton. But maybe that was a good thing. Nothing in the world was worth looking at anymore. She didn’t have to see the corpses littering the streets or the bloody scabs on her throbbing feet from miles upon miles of endless walking. It was hard enough to feel those things: not seeing saved her from the pain of reality, just a little bit. It kept her safe in more ways than one.
Plus, she had her own light.
It wasn’t long after she joined up with a group of survivors that they found you. Had it not been for Sehun’s dog Vivi, they might have missed you completely. You were cowering in the corner of a local grocery store in a recently-afflicted town, shaking with your hands pressed tightly over your eyes, not making a sound until Vivi ran to your side and began to bark.
At the loud sound, you’d started to cry, body weakly slumping against one of the shelves. Sera, the leader of the group, slowly made her way over as Sehun picked Vivi up, listening closely. Your sobs were much louder than the crunch of glass under their feet.
“Is that... a person?” Sera asked softly, her hand brushing against the shelves. “If you’re there.... You can talk to us. I know it’s been scary. But we can help.”
You cried a moment longer, and the sound broke Hyunjoo’s heart as she crept up behind Sera. She’d gotten used to being blind by now, and could tell about how far away you were from the sound of your cries, although she could not see you. “What’s your name?” She asked gently, not wanting to startle you any more.
“I-I’m (Y/N),” you said finally, your voice hoarse. Hyunjoo guessed that you’d probably been hiding in the store for days without food or water, too afraid to move your hands away from your eyes. “How did you all get away? F-from that thing?”
“Luck,” Sera said bluntly. “We managed to cover our eyes in time and find each other. Are you covering your eyes?”
“Yes. But I can’t do anything or I’ll have to bring my hands away from my eyes.”
“I have an extra blindfold,” offered Seolhyun, another member of the group, shuffling through her bag. “Just give me a second to get over there and find you.” She was new to not seeing the world, and immediately tripped as she got close to the corner, barely catching herself on another shelf.
“I’ll take it,” Hyunjoo offered, finding her easy enough with her stick. Seolhyun quickly handed it over. The trick to seeing with your senses, Hyunjoo had learned, was concentration. She moved forward slowly, her hand running along the shelf she knew you were sitting by until your breathing became loud. Then she crouched down and moved her hand in front of her until it hit your shoulder, causing you to jump. “It’s just me,” she said, palming the blindfold and running her hand up your neck to your face. “Bring your hands down but keep your eyes closed, okay?”
“Okay,” you whispered, and obeyed. After finding your eyes, she quickly tied the blindfold tight around your head.
“Does that feel right?” She asked, moving back. She could hear fabric moving in front of her, and figured that it must be you fixing the cloth.
“Yeah. Now it does. Can I open my eyes?”
“Yeah.”
You inhaled a deep breath as Hyunjoo stood up, listening closely. Then you let out a sigh, broken by a half-sob. “It’s just darkness. It’s awful.”
“You’ll get used to it,” she said, and reached down to grab your hand. “I’ll help you up. How long is it since you had water or food?”
Your grasp was weak, and it worried her as she helped you to your unsteady feet. “I-I don’t know. I had a soda that I was drinking with my eyes closed, but it ran out and I was too scared too move. I had a granola bar, too, after it first happened.”
“How long ago did it happen?” Sera asked. Hyunjoo knew why she was asking: they were trying to outrace the monsters to figure out a pattern. There never seemed to be any pattern or any sliver of hope, but they tried.
“I think three or four days ago? I’m not sure.... I think I passed out at some point, honestly.” You shuddered in Hyunjoo’s arms and she bit her lip, worried. You were cold and weak. You wouldn’t survive long like this.
“We’ll get some food and water in you. That’s why we’re here anyway. Once we have all the supplies we can find, we’ll move on.” She wasn’t sure she liked the idea of you walking such long distances in the state you were in, but they had no choice but to move on. Staying in one space for too long was dangerous. Especially a place already attacked. “Do you know if anyone else is alive?”
Immediately, you began to cry again, leaning into Hyunjoo’s shoulder. She held you a bit tighter as the sobs wrecked your body, her heart hurting. The room stayed silent as you cried: they all knew the pain you were feeling. “J-just me,” you finally managed to get out, hiccuping and sucking in breath. “M-my family, they all....”
Hyunjoo was so glad that you couldn’t see. Just from moving through the store, she knew the damage. Her stomach twisted as she rubbed your back, trying to comfort you even though she knew nothing she could do would really help. “You don’t have to say it,” she assured you. “Come on, let’s get something for you to eat.” She helped you out of your hiding spot, guiding you the best she could while being blind herself. No matter how many times your legs gave out or you tripped, she held you up, and made a promise to herself.
She was going to take care of you, no matter what. She wanted you to live.
-
It was a while before you learned how to walk blind. For the first few weeks, Hyunjoo helped you walk, supporting most of your weight with your arm around her shoulders. You stumbled often, both from weakness and from not being able to see. Hyunjoo tried her best to warn you of anything in front of you, swinging her stick an extra length in your path, but you usually ended up tripping anyway. When the group was resting, you got around by crawling on your hands and knees. But you didn’t leave her side very often.
She shared everything with you: her food, her water, her blanket, and even her jacket, wrapping her arms around you as the temperatures dropped until they were able to salvage more coats. She often slept by your side, waiting until you drifted off despite the threat to her life. She’d given you her earplugs, leaving herself open to hear the voices that often came with nightfall. The voices were nothing new to her, though, and she’d learned to block them out. You had needed them more.
One night, she awoke to your voice. At first, she thought it was the creature, and stayed silent, not moving. But then you softly called her name again, and tugged at her sleeve. “Hyunjoo?”
“Yes, (Y/N)?”
“I’m cold. And scared.” The group had camped up against the mouth of a cave for the night. It was shelter from the nightly rains, but the ground was still cold, and your clothes were still wet from the previous day. It was a miserable night. Shivering, Hyunjoo rolled over and wrapped her arms around you, holding you tight.
“I know,” she said, whispering so that she wouldn’t wake the others or attract attention. “I’m right here.”
You snuggled into her, burying your face into her shoulder. It had become almost a habit for you, ever since you’d left the store in her arms. “Do you think it’ll warm up soon?”
“I hope so. But I don’t know. We’re heading south so we should be hitting a warmer climate soon.”
“I hope so.” You paused for a moment and your breathing evened. For a moment, she thought you might have fallen asleep. Then you shifted in her arms. “Why are you so nice to me?”
The question struck her in the heart. Your voice was broken, raspy from your new cold, and she held you closer, willing the chill to go away. “Why wouldn’t I be?”
“You don’t know me. Not really. We’ve never even seen each other.”
“You don’t have to see someone to know them, (Y/N).” She ran her fingers through your hair slowly. “But I guess to answer your question, I’m nice to you because I care about you. I’ve been drawn to you ever since I met you in that store.”
“Is it because you pity me?”
“Maybe back then. But it’s also because I see myself in you.”
You paused. “You do?”
“Yep. I also lost everything and everyone I loved. I sat in my house for days on end with my eyes covered, shaking and lost, until I had to leave for my own survival. I had to learn how to survive even though it was hard. When I saw you there, I understood what you were going through. I wanted to help you, because I wanted to make things a litter easier for you. The more I get to know you, though, the more I like you. You’re a good person, (Y/N). I think you’re the first person to make me smile in a long time.”
“Oh.” You were silent for another long moment. “I like you too, Hyunjoo. Thank you. For everything.” You snuggled in closer, getting comfortable, and she took a deep breath, closing her eyes.
You helped her a lot more than you knew. You gave her a purpose again.
-
Eventually, you got used to living on the run. You still cried often, curling into Hyunjoo’s side, but you tripped less and learned how to navigate this new world. Still, the moment they found a safe house, Hyunjoo was relieved.
Abandoned houses were nothing new. Almost every house was now abandoned or boarded up with no hope of anyone allowing anyone else inside. She didn’t blame those people: she’d heard about the followers of the creature too. This house, though.... It was different. It had been abandoned long before the creature, but most importantly, Vivi liked it.
Typically, the growing would start as soon as a door was opened, signalling that the place was unsafe. But with this house, Vivi did not growl. She didn’t even bark. Instead, as the group slowly explored with their hands, she wagged her tail, hitting Sehun’s leg.
“There’s no creatures here,” he said, confident, sitting down against one of the walls and petting Vivi’s head. “Just us.”
“How can we be so sure?” Sera’s voice rang through the large empty space.
“Because Vivi is never wrong. She knows what she sees. And she doesn’t see anything but the people she trusts here.”
The group shuffled towards Sehun, gathering together. With a sigh, Sera ran her thin fingers through her hair. “We do need somewhere to stay. But I’m not very keen on the idea of taking our blindfolds off.”
“Why?” You asked, and Hyunjoo flinched. She knew what was coming.
“Because you never know when that thing will get in.” Sera’s tone of voice changed, bitterness seeping through with every word. “Or who might get in with that thing behind them. I trusted a place enough to take off my blindfold once, only to watch my entire group be murdered by a maniac who had pretended to be one of us. He forced their eyes open and laughed at our panic. Some of us escaped, but we were forced to leave our blindfolds behind.” Her voice lowered. “I was the only one who made it. I got to cradle the dead body of my girlfriend in my arms after she accidentally opened her eyes, then used her own weapon to kill herself. That’s why I don’t like the idea of taking our blindfolds off.”
The room was silent, and Hyunjoo put her arm around you for support. She could feel you shaking.
“S-sorry,” you said, your head hanging. “I didn’t know.”
“Well, now you do.” Sera placed her bag on the ground with a loud “thud” and sighed once more. “I will say that I trust Vivi, though. I think we can stay here for a while. At least until the cold front ends. But no taking your blindfolds off. Is that clear?”
A chorus of yes’s answered her question. Minho, a large military man who had been the one to find Sera, cleared his throat. “We should find something to board the windows up with. The back windows are already boarded but it looks like the boards from the front windows fell away. I think I found some wood over in the corner where the kitchen is. The water still works, surprisingly, so we have a source of water now.”
“And there’s a fireplace,” Seolhyun added. “I tripped over it.”
“Great. Let’s get to work making this place warm and livable. Don’t get too comfortable, though. We could have to move at any moment.”
-
Hyunjoo had forgotten how nice it felt to be warm. Her new cough rattled her body, but sitting by the fire helped ward off the feeling of death in her lugs, so she stayed as close as she could without getting set on fire. You often joined her there, even as your own cold got better with the heat and drinking water, cuddling with her and helping her keep dry and hydrated. After all the time she spent looking after you, you were now looking after her.
“I wish we had medicine,” you said once, shaking your head as you leaned against her. “But we can’t read the labels, so we don’t know what they are.”
“You’re right. This has really made me realize how little the world cares about blindness. Almost everything requires sight.”
It was rare that the two of you were left alone. But one day, She awoke in front of the fire to you combing her hair, her head on your lap, and no other sounds in the house.
“Where did everyone go,” she asked with a rasp, listening closely for any sign of life. There was no one, other than you.
“They said not to wake you, but a lot of them went out to try and find supplies. They took Vivi with them. I think Seolhyun is still sleeping in the kitchen.”
“Oh. So it’s pretty much just us?”
“Yep.”
She laid there for a while, half asleep, letting you comb through her hair, before turning over to wrap her arm around your torso, nuzzling her nose into your stomach. You were warm now, cold gone, and she appreciated the quiet intimacy, happy to lay there forever and fight with the occasional cough as you took care of her.
“Hyunjoo?” Your voice was soft and affectionate, and she loved the sound of it.
“Hm?”
“I like you.”
She smiled a bit. “I would hope so.”
“No, not like that. Well, like that too, but also... I think I’m in love with you.”
Back in her normal life, a confession like that would have rocked her. But now, it just seemed right. As soon as you said it, she knew it was true, and she knew that the feelings she’d had for you had been love for a while now. Smiling widely, she reached up to touch your cheek, proud when you leaned into her touch instead of flinching away.
“I love you too, (Y/N).”
“Really?” She felt your cheek move under her hand, signalling that you were smiling. It made her heart swell with affection in her chest.
“Really.” She sat up slowly, ignoring the pain in her lungs, and positioned herself in front of you. Her other hand now came up to roam your face, taking in your features with her sensitive fingers. She ran them over your nose, over your cheekbones and your jaw, over your ears and your forehead, and pressed them against your blindfold, running her thumbs along the outline of your eyes. “I think your incredible,” she said, making you laugh.
“Was that your way of seeing me?” You sounded a little breathless, your face now much closer to hers.
“Yes. Why don’t you try?”
At her suggestion, you brought your hands up, tentatively touching her face and exploring her features. You moved slow, taking every part of her in and stopping over the scar on her cheek, touch even more gentle as you ran your finger over it. “What’s this from?”
“I fell,” she said, smiling at the memory. It hadn’t been funny then, but it was amusing looking back. She’d come so far since she first started out. “I was just as clumsy as you when I first escaped too.”
“Somehow I can’t imagine that.” You pressed your forehead against hers. “You’re just so perfect.”
“I’m not, but thank you.” She could feel your breath on her lips. “Can I kiss you?”
You let out a giggle, your hands landing on her shoulders as you pulled her in. “Please do.”
It felt good to kiss someone. To feel intimate with someone again. Her body had so craved that human interaction, and your lips brought light back into her life. More even than you had on your own. She kissed you until her lungs burned and her lips tingled and she had to pull away to cough, making you laugh.
“Lay down,” you said, lowering her back down into your lap. “You need to sleep.”
When she woke up again, it was to the sound of the group coming back into the house, and to the warmth of you laid down beside her, your head in her crook of her shoulder.
-
In the dead of the night months later, Hyunjoo awoke with a jolt. She lay still, controlling her breathing as she listened. What had woken her up? Everyone in the group was there. She could hear them breathing, some snoring, and you were by her side as you always were. Nothing had changed since she went to sleep. So what was it? Had it been some sound? An animal, maybe?
Somewhere near the door, Vivi shifted. She heard her nails scraping on the wood floor as something woke the dog. So she wasn’t alone. Something was happening.
Vivi had hardly gotten in a bark when something slammed into the door hard enough to splinter the hinges. Hyunjoo sat up, bringing you up with her as everyone else came awake as well, shuffling in their blankets and grabbing for their weapons. Vivi barked and growled and the door shuddered under some weight one again. Sera let out a gasp as Hyunjoo got to her feet, helping you up as well.
“That’s a human, we have to get out of here, we can’t-.”
The door splintered and broke open with a sickening crack, making you scream as both of you stumbled backwards. Laughter came from outside the door and Hyunjoo’s heart sank. That wasn’t the sound of one person. That was a group.
“We found you!” Said a man’s booming voice, and a woman laughed behind him.
“Don’t be scared! We’re only here to help you see!”
“Run!” At Sera’s words, the group scattered. Hyunjoo couldn’t see, but she knew where she’d been sleeping, and she knew how to get to the back door. With her own knife in hand, she grabbed you and pulled you away, running towards the door. Behind her, Seolhyun screamed and then the man screamed. Vivi let out a wail as she was kicked into the wall, and Sehun cursed. Hyunjoo didn’t look back.
She found the door just as it was flung open by someone outside.
“Hello. We have another door!” A woman, a different woman, said in a sing-song voice. Hyunjoo stepped back, moving you behind her as she tried to listen. The screams and chaos behind her make her stomach sick, but she had to listen in order to escape. Three people she did not know where now in the house, leaving one in front of her. With the door open, she could hear the sounds from outside, and yet she heard to footsteps. There was only one woman at this door.
“Hyunjoo,” you said, voice shaking, but Hyunjoo stood firm. The woman’s hands grabbed her shoulders and she pulled out the knife, stabbing forward with all her strength.
Her blade made impact and the woman gurgled, stumbling back. With a jerk, Hyunjoo withdrew her blade and shoved the woman to the side, pulling you out the door with her. The two of you ran a couple paced before she stopped and turned around, listening. The struggle inside had gotten worse, and she couldn’t hear anyone else outside. Usually she trusted her friends to fend for themselves, but panic boiled up in her throat and she gripped her knife.
“I need to go back in there and help.” Her heart was pounding, her entire body racing with adrenaline as she stepped forward, but you grabbed her arm, holding her back.
“You can’t go back in there, you might die!”
“But everyone else, I don’t think they’ll-!”
She didn’t get to finish her sentence. A blast of unbearable hot air shoved the two of you forward, sending you tumbling into the dead grass and dirt. The boom came seconds later, rocking the earth underneath your hands and feet. Then it was silent.
For a moment, she lay still in shock, trying to process what had happened. Nothing moved. Nothing made noise. The only sound was your hitched breathing, the crackle of a fire, and the pounding of her heart in her ears. Tears pricked at her eyes as she slowly pushed herself up from the ground, reality crashing down around her.
“T-they-.” She cut herself off, turning over so that she was facing the house. She still couldn’t see, but she could feel the heat of a huge fire dancing across her skin. “They’re all dead.” The tears began to stream down her face now as she sat in the dirt, the back of her neck burned and blood on her hands. The only family that she’d known for so long... gone. Everything was over in the matter of minutes. A sob wrecked her sore lungs and shook her entire body. Her friends. The people who had fought for so long to survive. It had all been for nothing.
“Oh, Hyunjoo.” You wrapped your arms around her as she sobbed, leaning her body forward into yours. The fire was so warm, yet she felt so cold. The world felt empty. You were crying too, your body shivering against hers and your tears dripping down onto her shoulders. As much as she wanted to hold you, she couldn’t. Her body wouldn’t move as she sobbed more than she had in what felt like an eternity, letting out everything that she’d bottled up for so long.
“I-I could have saved them,” she sobbed, still clutching at the knife that now seemed useless. “I could have woken them up sooner, I could have fought back, I could-.”
“Hyunjoo!” You interrupted her, clearing your throat and holding back your tears for the moment. “It’s not your fault.”
“But I woke up before everyone else, I should have warned them then. Or I should have stayed behind to help them fight.”
“It’s not your fault,” you repeated. “You couldn’t have known. And had you stayed behind, we both would be dead right now. You saved our lives.”
“But I couldn’t save them.”
“You can’t save everyone, Hyunjoo.... Not in this world.”
She shuddered, leaning her entire weight into you and letting you support her. “I hate this world,” she whispered, heartbroken. For a moment, you were silent, but then you brought your hand up to run in through her hair, soothing the pain with your gentle hand.
“So do I,” you admitted, whispering in return. “But I don’t hate that I’m here with you.” You took a deep breath. “We need to start walking. This place isn’t safe anymore.”
“But what’s the point?” For the first time in her life, she didn’t have the energy. She wanted to lay down and give up. To succumb to the heat of the fire that had taken away those so precious to her. Her life was over. But you shook her by the shoulders, pulling away ever so slightly and jolting her back to reality. Shocked, she tilted her head up as you spoke.
“No, don’t say that! There’s a point to living! There’s always a point! Hyunjoo, I love you. I want to live on with you. When I wanted to give up, you came in and gave me a reason to live. You supported me through my worst times. You helped me become strong. You gave me a will to keep fighting even though I had lost everything.” Your voice wavered and you stopped to contain yourself before continuing. “You helped me, so now I’ll help you. I’ll support you. I’ll help you move forward when you’re too tired or hurt to continue. I’ll carry you if I have to. But please. My love. Keep living.”
Another tear ran down her face as she sat up. For a moment, she imagined that she could see your face. That she could see her light, with your smile she loved to run her fingers over. What did you look like now? Was there determination shining in your eyes? She took a deep breath and it rattled her lungs. She was sick, her gear had just been destroyed, and almost everyone she cared about was gone. You were still there, holding her up in her weakest moment, but she was scared.
“What if we just die, and it’s all for nothing?”
You paused for a long moment, just holding her, before standing to your feet and helping her up as well. When she was standing, you took her arm and cupped her cheek with your hand. Somehow, the fire had started to die down, and somewhere, the sun was rising.
“Well, if we die, then we die. I guess that’s fate and we can’t run from it forever. But if there is a way to live in this world, it’ll be worth living. I want to grow old with you, and I’m willing to fight for the chance to do that.”

Funny Thing About Me #3
K this one has a bit of context so LET ME TELL YOU A STORY.
I come from parents of the dark kind. They like heavy music, they listen to rock and roll and heavy metal, my dad plays guitar in a fucking bad ffs. I went to one of his gigs around Christmas and it was the most normal thing to watch him do honestly. Anyway, both my parents like heavy music and dress like that, right? So, most teenagers (I’m 18 so kind of in that weird stage between teen and adult) start listening to heavy music either as a “phase” or the next part of their musical journey to rebel. I COULDN’T DO THAT. The first band I ever got into back in year 8 was Black Veil Brides, and to my dad THEY WERE NOT HARDCORE ENOUGH. I mean obviously he’s never listened to Wretched and Divine but like to him they were not heavy enough. It didn’t stop me, I still love them to this day, but I couldn’t use it as a way to rebel cos it wasn’t to extreme for them, it was too tame for them. And listening to other “emo” bands of those times like My Chemical Romance, TURNS OUT MY MUM LIKED MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE. So like, listening to that music I was almost... validating them? And instead of rebelling it was like I was being treated as a newbie, a child entering the scene of heavy music for the first time and starting with the tame bands. I was like 13 lmao.
It kind of got worse when I got into Nightwish? Because Nightwish was a band my dad approved of, and his mate loves (this guy actually took me to my first gig which was Nightwish WITHOUT MY DAD like I just went with him, his sons and their mate so make of that what you will) so to them, it was like I was finally getting into the good stuff. Again, not rebelling. Can’t do that, they approve.
Then, recently, as I’ve continued to find more bands, either the classics like Iron Maiden and Motorhead or newer bands, my parents get a little device called an Amazon firestick, which allows them to watch YouTube on the downstairs telly. WELL NOW IT’S MUSIC CITY my mum likes to do this thing she calls “listen to tunes” where she and another person, usually my dad but she somehow gets me to do it, will take turns playing a song. When I do it I sometimes play 9Muses (WHICH SHE NOW LOVES SO BANG GOES ANOTHER ONE) and other girl group songs, but sometimes I go for heavy music. Black Veil Brides, AWS, Cradle of Filth, Nightwish, whatever I like really. She also plays her bands and her music, one of which she showed me was Arch Enemy. SO LET’S GET INTO MY ISSUE WITH ARCH ENEMY.
It’s not an “issue” I LOVE THEM, they’re amazing. Honestly, stan. But I don’t listen to them a lot, really. As much as I love them and their music, I just haven’t been able to get into them and really listen to and appreciate them. And I’ve discovered that it is probably because of my mother. She got me into them. She played me a song by them, I got the hots for Alissa and I fell in love with their music. But, whenever I listen to them, I feel like I’m validating my mum even more. With other bands they may have known them and liked them, but I still found them and got into them myself, but with Arch Enemy my mum directly showed me a song by them and got me into them. OH AND SHE KNOWS I LOVE ALISSA for some stupid fucking reason I told her... and now it’s all she comments on when the topic of them rises and I’m around. I love them but they’re marked in my head as “that band my mum got me into and knows I’m in love with the lead singer”. REALLY can’t rebel with them.
And even more recently... my Halestorm obsession begun. As you can probably tell by the fact this blog has unintentionally become mostly a Halestorm stan blog, I fucking LOVE them to bits. All their albums, their cover albums, their energy, their performances, the band themselves, I love every part of them. So, when my mum somehow got me into another “tunes” night, I decided to play Halestorm. She didn’t know them. She remembers that they played Download in 2019 (and like the other 9 years previous lmao), but knew nothing else about them. And, didn’t seem to show interest in listening to herself. And my dad is more hardcore than my mum (rude but true?), so I know he wouldn’t like them. He doesn’t like some Metallica songs he’s that hardcore. I say hardcore like it’s a compliment, it’s not for him lol. Anyway, neither of them know of this band, or would listen to them.
FUCKING. SCORE.
I finally found a way to enjoy a band without them being marred by my parents. It’s a form of rebelling in my head. Obviously, other bands I like that they don’t like are good, but unfortunately my mum keeps liking all the fucking bands I show her. Halestorm for some reason not, though. Which is GOOD. Obviously I’d love if everyone liked Halestorm I KNOW A LOT OF PEOPLE WON’T and that’s fine you like what you like but we all have a perfect world where everyone likes your favourite band or artist, okay? But my parents don’t, so I can listen to them and feel like they are MY band. They are not my training wheels of heavy music, they are not what they got me into, they are MINE. MY band. The band I found and love because I like their music, nothing else. And I don’t wish to share that with them, because although I post them all over here and on my Twitter, they’re so personal to me. I love to share with my friends and fellow fans, but I don’t want to expose myself like that to my parents, because in actual fact I’m a little bit fucked in the head and it’s because of my parents and Halestorm is getting me through a lot of that shit. All music is so personal to me that I don’t want to share with my parents although I may share with friends, and I want it to stay that way.
This got way more meaningful than I meant it to be but moral of the story share your music with whoever you choose. To me, it’s as personal as your past, your desires, your dreams, it’s what you love and if you’re not comfortable sharing that with certain people you do not have to.

Support Older Girl Groups Pt. 4: 9Muses
Tumblr media
This week on Support Older Girl Groups we are supporting 9Muses. If you want to know why you should participate even if this week isn’t about a group you stan, check out this post. If you are new to this project, it is a series of weekly masterposts of videos to watch to support older girl groups.
This is not everything from 9Muses, this is some videos that need the view counts to go up with the intention of boosting 9Muses’s popularity, and helping out older girl groups!
About the Group
9Muses, sometimes called Nine Muses, is a Star Empire Entertainment girl group. Their current members are Kyungri, Hyemi, Sojin, Keumjo, and Sungah, although Sungah is currently on hiatus. They debuted in 2010 with nine members, and have unfortunately gone through a lot of member changes. But they haven’t let that effect they ability to make great music!
9Muses makes really catchy songs, often with a very beautiful and sexy concept. They also have amazing dancing skills and visuals. And I love their vocals. I actually have a lot of trouble describing 9muses. They are truly indescribable, but in a good way. I’m very new to 9muses but I already want to watch all of their music videos, buy all their albums, and go to their concerts. I strongly recommend checking them out!
Although 9Muses have really great songs, music videos, and dances, they have never really hit it big. That’s why this week of Support Older Girl Groups is so important. It would be really great for both 9muses, and all older girl groups if we could help them finally hit it big. So let’s put a lot of effort into helping them thrive this era.
Title Tracks
(The view count will be recorded from the video linked. Some are the 9Muses channel, some the 1theK channel, and some from the Genie channel.  Just go by the link)
Remember is 9muses comeback that came out today! (June 19th). It’s so beautiful and catchy, I don’t even know how to describe it. It has a very angelic yet dark vibe that I love. I’ve noticed they are really good at that vibe. Honestly, my description will not do it any justice, you have to just watch it. You will not regret it! This comeback deserves the world! It It currently only has 126,294 views. This will not do! We must give them our full support! This is a call to action, watch Remember by 9Muses! Share Remember by 9Muses! Vote for it, buy it, whatever you can with the resources you have, do it! You’d thank me and them you are welcome in advance.
Hurt Locker was 9muses’ comeback from 2015. I remember hearing a lot about it when it came out, so I was shocked to see it only got 5,090,530 views. I thought it would have at least 10mil! Hurt Lock really deserved so much more. But it’s not too late to give Hurt Locker a boost! It’s one of my favorites from them. The song itself is one I can’t stop listening to, and the dance is really great to. The choreography is also just so good! These girls are very talented and clearly work very hard. Let’s get Hurt Locket to 10mil!
Sleepless Night was another comeback from 2015. It has a similar aesthetic to Remember, but a different sound. It’s beautiful, dark, and somehow relatable in a way I can’t quite put my finger on. It currently only has 2,326,665 views. Let’s get it to 5mil!
Wild was 9Muses’ comeback from 2013. In a perfect world, or in a world that actually made sense, 9Muses would have truly taken off by this point. This song is so good. Everything about this song is good. Everything I’ve said about the other songs is true in this one as well. And, like I said about Remember, no description from me could do this song any justice. You just have to watch it. SO do yourself that favor, and watch it. It currently only has 9,484,368 views, which is the best out of all of their videos, but still not good enough. It’s really close to 10mil! let’s get it there, and then much farther!
Other Stuff to Check Out
This is stuff I wont be recording the view counts for, just stuff to check out if you are interested.
This is Hurt Locker’s dance practice. I recommend checking out all of their dance practices, because they are all such great dancers!
This is the music video for Dolls. I included it because I wanted to add it into the title tracks I’m recording views for, but only wanted to have 4 music videos, so we could put more attention on their comeback. If you liked all of the other songs on my list, check this one out too!
Ending Notes
Please reblog this and share this as much as possible! This project will do no real good unless it is a group effort. And please watch the videos as much as possible! It would do the most good if you guys watched each one  multiple times a day this week. If you want people to put the effort to help out your favorite older girl groups, help out other people’s faves too! Remember, next week’s post could be your favorite group!
Also this week is especially important because this is a group that has never really made it, and this could be one of their last chances. The popularity of 9Muses’ is literally in the hands of us, the fans of these girl groups. It’s not just fate that decides how well a comeback does, it’s us. Think of it like this, every time you watch Remember, 9Muses does a little better.
Also remember!
Listen to all of these songs on Spotify
Buy them and or the albums if you can
Follow them of social media
Spread the love for older girl groups!
Please Take This Survey!
It would be a huge help to me if you also took this quick survey about this post. It’s only one question, and it’s anonymous. Thanks!
(If there is anything that needs to be fixed about this post feel free to message me)

Note
i'd cry if you do a serious one, every single girl is so precious and deserves so much it will end up being super sappy lol but pls do it!
I will try my hardest to get all the qualities and be as unbiased as possible (though it might show a bit due to the length of the descriptions o.0). If I miss anything, anyone can feel free to add on to this :) And sorry this took so long. I wanted to not just go off the top of my head and find what I could. Plus my electricity was out -__-
On the outside, Seola appears to be very put together and wise. Her sense of humor is more sarcastic and she picks on those she feels extra close to (Exy & Soobin). She can also get pretty goofy (aka shameless) when she pulls out the body rolls and other sexy moves. Seola seems like she’d be a strong person all the time, but she can be just as sensitive. She’s there for the other members when she needs to be and she has her own weaknesses (she’s very afraid of water). She finds inspirational quotes meaningful and even used them to help her get through training. The one that stuck was, “Don’t delay happiness.” She also said that in order to stay strong during training, you must find something to make you happy in the moment, not just look forward to the happiness of debut. Seola wants to travel the world without money (idk girl but ok), experiencing everything as it is. She likes hip hop music, hiking, doing her hair, and spacing out. But one of the most important things to remember about Seola is just how hard of a worker she is. The girl dedicated 10 years of her life in order to become an idol. She even came close to debuting at one point (she was in a group with 9Muses Kyungri, Dalshabet’s Woohee, Hello Venus’s Lime, Yumi, and Exy), but that was all cut short. Never forget that.
Like the other members have said, Xuan Yi doesn’t really seem like she’d have the 4D personality that she does. She has her weird quirks, such as her obsession with gim, and sometimes they only get weirder. The girl wakes up in the middle of the night to eat gim and walk around the dorm. If that’s not at least slightly strange, I don’t know what is. Anyway, Xuan Yi is probably one of the kindest people on the planet and is definitely a mother of the group. She takes care of the other members when they need help, both emotionally and economically (she bought a super expensive lunch for half of the members in China). She seriously only asked them for aegyo or a cheek kiss in return. Adding onto her other great qualities, she also likes interacting with her fans. On multiple occasions, fans have jokingly said she was mean. In response, our lovely, gentle, and kind Xuan Yi “angrily” pointed into the crowd of fans and shouted, “Who said that?!” She enjoys shopping, gaming, and modeling. Her favorite color is dark blue and gim is actually her life.
Bona is an actual handcrafted gift from Heaven. She’s a beautiful person, both inside and out. She’s kind and takes care of all the younger members. She’s playful and enjoys participating with the other members when they get goofy (watch WJSN’s Idol Arcade or the mud fight in ‘My Cosmic Diary’), and also acts like a giant “bully,” teasing the others. Bona’s a feminine princess who hates bugs, loves her nail art/lipstick, takes a fucking hour in the shower (refused to get out when Dayoung needed the bathroom), wants to be able to teleport just because she hates walking, and has got the unimpressed expression mastered. Sometimes I think she can be a bit insecure about her looks and she used to get nervous on stage, but it’s good to know she feels very confident on stage nowadays. As I’ve talked about before, she recognized the same fansite photographer over and over, keeping count of the same special heart she made for them. She counted up to seventeen. Lastly, Bona is another one of the members that trained for a very long time in order to debut. 7 years to be exact. She dedicated a lot of time to a company that has horrible management skills (fuck you Cube), and smartly moved to Starship. I will forever be trash for her.
Exy is the resident bad ass aunty. Tired Aunty Exy is always taking care of the kids, mostly through keeping them in line. Her girl crush image is by far the strongest among the group members and she definitely has the “tough leader” look. Soobin has said that Exy can be strict during practices, can take charge when she needs to, and can be a hard-ass, but Exy is still sensitive and has her emotional moments. Exy herself has said that she cries a lot and enjoys romantic comedies. She likes to find things that she can do alone, movie watching being one of them. Her favorite movies are ‘The Notebook’ and ‘Burlesque’ (YES BTCH). I’m pretty sure almost all the members agreed that she was intimidating when they first met her. Anyway, Exy also has a lovely, goofy side. For some reason she enjoys dancing with some kind of circular orange object covering her cheeks (oranges & carrots). She loves and respects the skin she’s in, even finding her tan to be one of her charming points. Her favorite animals are puppies and cats, and like Seola, she wants to travel the world. Exy is another one of the members that worked her ass off for more than the typical training period. She dedicated 8 years to training and came close to debuting (she was in a group with 9Muses Kyungri, Dalshabet’s Woohee, Hello Venus’s Lime, Yumi, and Seola), but it was cut short. An important thing I want to mention is that Exy finds it hard to open up to others. After watching so many fellow trainees and friends cycle in and out of her trainee life, she’s gotten tired of going through the emotion of letting go. She’s scared that new people will end up leaving in the end like others have. Let’s take care of Aunty Exy from now on.
Small baby Soobin is precious and needs to be protected from the sinful world. She’s exactly like you thought she was when you first saw her: a sugary, fluffy, and innocent marshmallow. Soobin is incredibly sweet and likes the simple things in life (chocolate and coloring books). The only thing about her that would probably catch you off guard is her volume. Yes, volume. Pterodactyl Soobin lives beneath that cute exterior and comes out whenever she laughs and or screams, both of which happen often. Baby Soobin is also pretty bad under pressure and isn’t able to handle questioning by the other members about something she’s trying to hide. She’s a pretty clumsy person. She’s fallen into Yeonjung, smacking the poor girl in the nose, and has even gotten changed behind a door before she asked if a camera could see her. Her favorite colors are pink and sky blue, she likes acoustic music and hiking, and she hates eggplant. Soobin please pull yourself together. AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST, Soobin is another of the members that worked her butt of in order to debut. She has about 6 or 8 years under her belt.
Luda is a spawn of Satan. Ok, that’s not true, but she is a little rascal. Luda is very, very quiet and has her shy moments, but on the inside she’s a little savage. She makes hilarious sarcastic remarks and has no shame in speaking her more aggressive thoughts. Moving on, Luda has a strong work ethic. The group has stated that she has a more frail body and even needs to eat a lot just to not lose weight. I read that practicing was more strenuous on her than the others because of this, but she worked hard to keep up with the group. Plus she’s a girl scout! Even though she can be tough with her sense of humor and mischievousness, Luda seems to love the cutest things. She likes handwritten letters and just likes hearing people say “thank you” to her. On her birthday, she enjoys giving back to others, such as family and friends, by making them something to eat. She has admitted to feeling scared of becoming an adult because of responsibilities and is even scared to be forgotten by others (like with friendships, not just fans). On a more positive note, she likes both extremely spicy and sweet foods, movies, books, and gaming. Also scented candles and her wrist watch. She also said she wants to walk her dog over the holidays, but her dog is scared of the outside world. All in all, Luda is absolutely precious.
Dawon is the chillest of chill and the underappreciated of underappreciated. She seems like a pretty relaxed person and just goes with the flow of things. She sleeps the most of the group and is even called Snorlax. She’s such a sweetheart and comes off as so kind. Dawon is considerate of all the other girls and even moves things out of the way just so all the girls can be seen on frame. She likes perfume, the piano, spicy food, working out, reading, and hearing that she lost weight. Ok, but time to get very serious for a minute. It’s clear that music means everything to her. Dawon has done nothing but work and work and work. She loves singing more than anything. While on ‘Girl Spirit’, she sang ‘Yanghwa Bridge’ and her performance brought all the girls to tears, including herself. There, we learned that Dawon’s father had never once complimented her singing. He said he felt horrible for not being more supportive, but just let that sink in for a minute. Dawon hardly gets the recognition she deserves for her singing, from her father, the company, and the fandom. By now, she’s got to be more sensitive to the feeling of not being acknowledged. Dawon was so emotional seeing her father and hearing kind words from him. Don’t you think it’s time to GIVE HER MORE SUPPORT? THE SUPPORT SHE DESERVES?
The perfect way to come back to positivity is to talk about Eunseo. She is an actual walking meme and is always giving the fandom the gay moments (the others do as well, but this girl goes above and beyond). Her personality is loud (literally) and bright. She’s very energetic and enjoys playing around with nearly everyone. In fact, I think it’s fair to say that Eunseo is one of the members that gets along very well with all the girls. Even though she’s one of the youngest, she’s always there for the others. She’s cock blocked male fans, she’s comforted Seola when she was confronted by her fear of water, she’s cooked for the other members (even though they picked takeout over her), and she’s waken all the girls up in the morning like a good parent (probably still does to this day). Even though she likes joking around with everyone and seems slightly invincible, Eunseo really hates being mocked and scary things. Of course while in a dark/abandoned school she continuously said “I’ll protect you all,” but she was probably the most scared and actually said that with a blankly, terrified face. Lastly, according to Seola, Eunseo is a member that the girls can tell anything to. She’s a good listener and will never tell anything about the conversation to anyone else.
According to the internet, Cheng Xiao is extremely sweet and an absolute angel. This is one of the few times you can believe the internet full heartedly. She recently blew up the world wide web with her amazing skills in gymnastics and has only continued to impressive everyone with her down to earth personality. She’s been nothing but cute, kind, and loving toward others, especially her group members. I’m pretty sure every member loves Xiao and she’s probably cuddled all the time. I know all the girls work hard, but Xiao has shown us that she’s willing to go to the extreme. While practicing for her ISAC gymnastics performance, she also had other schedules to attend for the ‘Secret’ promotions. The girl stayed up for hours practicing, even needing IV in order to get through the long days of work. If that’s not dedication, then nothing is. Cheng Xiao has offered candy to young kids while they were working at a traditional Korean temple tour site (?), even doing it in English for the foreigners. She likes movies, dramas, hiking, swimming, and badminton. She hates insects, pickled radish, and sashimi (too bad most of her girlfriends love it). One look at her and you know she needs to be protected.
Coming around to the last of the 98line, we have the “sexy member” Mei Qi. She has been selected as one of the smartest members, especially since she’s the bridge between the Korean speakers and Chinese speakers (idk if they all speak Mandarin, so I generalized). She’s an elegant and beautiful person who definitely seems to be mature for her age. Even though she’s on the quieter side, if you get her going she can be one of the goofiest members. Mei Qi always has a judgmental expression waiting in the wind and gets loud when the girls are joking around. I like to think she has a great amount of confidence, especially since she calls herself “Mei Qi Oppa” and has pictures of herself all around her bed. I’m not kidding. This is a serious post, remember? Anyway, she’s an artistic girl that likes drawing and kills at freestyle dance. She hates tomatoes, is well rounded in the dancing and singing skills, and likes clothing, photos, Taeyeon, Boa, and Beyonce. Her favorite colors are purple, wine, and black and she loves koalas. Please love Mei Qi Oppa.
Yeoreum is the small, precious child in this group. She is one of the “Queens of Food” and has been documented to have eaten “5 cows worth of beef” while celebrating their debut. She would pick food over sleep any day. Yeoreum is one of the cutest, little warm fuzzies that you will ever meet. Her #1 go to skill is her imitation of cleaning glass with a towel. She’s full of aegyo and uses it to get what she wants from the Unnies. She really wants to try acting and even practiced with Eunseo at one point, though Eunseo responded with, “This is not acting, but aegyo.” On a much more serious note, I want to talk about how much family means to Yeoreum. She is very, very close to her grandparents and even lived with them for a long time. She spilled a lot of tears while talking about them on ‘My Cosmic Diary.’ Recently, Yeoreum’s grandmother passed away. I can only imagine how she must have been feeling, especially with the ‘Secret’ comeback/promotions right around the corner. She was able to return home, thankfully, for the service. I know this was a very sad thing to talk about, but I really wanted to just establish about how much Yeoreum loves her family (while talking about the closeness, not passing). To bring things back to positivity, Yeoreum likes cameras, her watch, soft blankets, perfume, massages, traveling, sleeping, and “everyone
Dayoung plays two roles. The “loud and proud youngin” and the mom. She cooks for the girls often, especially on the holidays. She really cares about health and diet so she’s often paying attention to those two things for herself and the members. Mommy Dayoung also wakes the girls in the morning for schedules. We all know that Dayoung has been wanting to go into variety for a long time, and with her hyperactivity and wittiness, the girl is perfect for it. It’s also good to mention that she definitely works Aunty Exy into the ground with her activity, but there is evidence that proves Exy in fact joins in on the shenanigans. Anyway, Dayoung likes watching TV, buying clothes, makeup, and pets. She also said that if she could have any super power, she said she would want to have the ability to control time so she could go back and fix things. Part of me believes that she was thinking of her family. Dayoung’s family went through a lot of economical difficulty when her father left. They were very poor, and are still poor currently. But despite that, Dayoung still wanted to care for the other members so she called her mom for money in order to just buy a watermelon. Dayoung is so sweet and considerate of everyone around her. It’s fun to laugh along with her while the girls are joking around, but it’s good to remember just how much Dayoung does for others.
And finally Yeonjung. She got a lot of shit from her time on PD101 for being “attention seeking” and a “brat.” I’m gonna start this with me defending her. Yeonjung was in a competition for a spot in a girl group. It only makes sense that she’d try hard to get some spotlight. She doesn’t want anyone to forget about her. Trends come and go, and she couldn’t afford to “go.” Anyway, Yeonjung is an actual ray of sunshine. She always has so much energy and is making the other girls laugh all the time. WJSN loves her and even wanted her to stay under Starship with them. She had been planning on leaving, but the Wuju girls wanted her to stay and a spot in the group was opened up for her. The girls from IOI have also talked about how much they love Yeonjung. Others have said she hardly ever gets angry and is always patient. Staff have said that Yeonjung is very appropriate according to her settings. She’s loud and fun, but also quiet when she needs to be. Yeonjung likes spicy food, chocolate, and movies. Also, she’s said that her specialty is speaking quickly (which I actually have noticed??) and giving advise. Yeonjung is a precious baby and deserves all the love in the world.

Top 10 Most Underrated K-pop Songs of 2017 (Idol Edition)
Tumblr media
2017 has come and gone before we knew it.
Continuing with the K-Pop Timeout Tradition (see 2016 Ver) of listing the Top 10 Most Underrated K-Pop Songs because all the other sites are just bothered with the Top 10 that pretty much everyone will have heard of/have fan wars over, below are our top 10 picks of songs that did not rank high but deserves your attention! Like last year we have a section for underrated non-idol tracks too, but this year we will make a separate post for Top 10 underrated non-idol tracks. A separate post will also be made for Top 10 underrated K-Drama OSTs.
Some of the artists have escaped the list in recent years to stardom (this year the escapees are LOONA and NU’EST) so hopefully it happens again!
This is in alphabetic order NOT order of awesomeness because all of them are awesome. Also, all MVs are linked in the song titles because Tumblr won’t let me share that many videos in one post.
APRIL “APRIL STORY”
Tumblr media
With the successful debut and management of K.A.R.D, it seems like DSP Media is finally back on track and they have definitely been giving APRIL a lot stronger comebacks in 2017. The most underrated is perhaps their first banger of the year “APRIL STORY”, which should have propelled them to success instead of their slight increase in attention that was still not enough to help later comebacks like “MAYDAY” and “Take My Hand.” An amazing winter track with Disney-esque instrumentals and killer vocal performance, the song is further complemented by the music video, where the girls’ doll-like visuals sign in the magical dollhouse theme. If you love the dramatic sound of GFRIEND, the fantasy-infused tunes of LOVELYZ, and the Disney musical like pieces of early IU, “APRIL STORY” is the perfect combination for you!
B.I.G “1.2.3”
Tumblr media
A comeback missing one member, because rapper Minpyo was sick, B.I.G still managed to carry “1.2.3” as four and slayed with this super powerful track. The song is a mix of the typical dance-pop we are familiar with in K-Pop with a lot of funk and RnB influences and highlights how Benji is one of the most underrated power vocals of K-Pop. The choreo and MV are also super fun and retro, complementing the already great track in many ways. If you are a fan of BLOCK B’s dramatic theatrics and MAMAMOO’s fun power vocals and need an energetic jam to get you started on a Monday or run miles in the gym, then B.I.G’s “1.2.3.” is the song for you.
Brave Girls “Rollin’”
Tumblr media
Sadly still stuck on the underrated list, Brave Girls return with 5 members in another woefully unappreciated banger with “Rollin’”. Featuring the signature Brave Brother’s sexiness and addictive post-chorus instrumental, the song has everything needed in a classy sexy K-Pop track. The memorable chair choreo also furthers the mystery behind the song’s lack of success in South Korea. If like other Brave Brother’s produced female groups like SISTAR, T-ARA, and 4MINUTE, this song is your dance-pop fix!
ELRIS “Pow Pow”
Tumblr media
While they only debuted this year and have time to grow, ELRIS and their song “Pow Pow” definitely deserves more attention, especially considering their 2017 rookie competitors being mainly popular girl groups with I.O.I members. This fun girl group track with a strong rock guitar riff blends in intro and dance break plus a catchy electronic chorus makes it one of the strongest girl group tracks of the year. If you are a fan of cutesy girl groups with an edge like TWICE and Oh My Girl, go check out ELRIS in “Pow Pow”!
N.Flying “The Real”
Tumblr media
With a long hiatus and the addition of popular PRODUCE 101 member Yoo Hoesung, fans were uncertain of N.Flying’s comeback but the boys delivered with a super catchy track that will hopefully kick off an amazing Korean career for the boys. “The Real” shows all the best of N.Flying - a colorful blend of vocals and rap that only got amplified by Hoesung’s ridiculous vocal range. If you are a fan of other FNC bands like FT Island and CN Blue but also like the crazy fun pop tracks of BLOCK B and B.A.P, “The Real” is the song for you!
9MUSES “Love City”
Tumblr media
With only 4 members left, 9MUSES continue to make us ask the question of “Why are they not super famous yet?” “Love City” continues to showcase the unique 9MUSES dance-pop sound and surpasses it with an addictive chorus that goes up the scales (musically and figuratively) and has that Janet Jackson-esque giggle to top it off. If you want a top class and smooth mature girl group banger like those of After School and SNSD during their prime, you better check this song out!
SNUPER “Back:Hug”
Tumblr media
Hopefully “The Unit” will give these boys more attention because “Back:Hug” and pretty much all SNUPER tracks are bops. Produced by Sweetune, the masterminds behind early INFINITE tracks, “Back:Hug” continues with the signature Sweettune 80s synth melodies but with a 2017 twist - tropical house! The distorted tropical house sound adds an interesting layer to the already addictive track makes it insane how underrated this track is. If you like INFINITE and BOYFRIEND’s previous Sweettune produced tracks and like the tropical house stuff from K.A.R.D, you should give this song a listen!
SONAMOO “I (Knew It)”
Tumblr media
Sonamoo is one of those groups with a crazy hype debut but through mismanagement, has started being forgotten. While Eujiin is hopefully going to change things as the center on “The Unit”, it would also help if more people listen to their newest track “I (Knew It)”. After TS Entertainment seemed to finally settle on a concept for the girls with “Friday Night”, the sultry and mature image continues with “I (Knew It)”, where the girls flaunt their sharp moves, killer rap and top vocals in this Latin-infused dance masterpiece. If you are a fan of SISTAR’s Latin-infused tracks and some of GAIN’s sexy solo stuff, you need to listen to “I (Knew It)”!
VAV “ABC (Middle of the Night)”
Tumblr media
Another group that never stops with bops is VAV, and “ABC (Middle of the Night)” is easily one of the catchiest songs of the year with little to no attention given to it. Not only do the boys have a consistent sound, they also improve on it, with “ABC (Middle of the Night)” being the epitome of it. Addictive beat - check. Playful rap - check. Catchy chorus - check. Honestly, if you are on the cute and smooth boys train of ASTRO and early BOYFRIEND, you should really check out “ABC (Middle of the Night)”!
VICTON “Unbelievable”
Tumblr media
Although they come from the same company as popular girl group A PINK, VICTON is still very underrated in South Korea. “Unbelievable” continues with their unique sound from debut - fun, colorful, and laid-back tracks that clearly highlight each member’s unique vocal color. The whistling in the chorus is also super catchy and will keep the song in your mind for days. If you like the feel good and fun sound of groups like SEVENTEEN and recent HIGHLIGHT (B2ST) stuff, “Unbelievable” is the track for you!
