Bestiaryposting Results: Dikebael

This animal's name is, admittedly, a bit of a "Tirion upon Túna (upon Rye)" situation in that I did not process that there was anything unusual about the name until, shortly after the entry went up, it got a "heh. Dick-ball" reply. (And they weren't alone; at least one of the art posts that's gone up has acknowledged the unfortunate name.) It probably doesn't help that this entry references the animal's testicles.

I can't even go, "well, it's not pronounced like that," because by the orthographical rules of the conlang I used to generate these names, it would be pronounced /dɪ·kɛ·bæ·ɛl/, so the start still pretty much sounds like "dick". I'd say I'll be more careful about that in future, but I scheduled all of these ahead of time and I'm not sure it's worth digging through the queue, so we'll just have to see.

@sweetlyfez (link to post here), acknowledging the lack of physical description in the entry, has opted to just have fun with it and put together this strange chimerical creature. I think the flat little horns on top of its snout are really interesting -- the linked post describes them as functioning like a stone circle to make sure it has the right date for its annual announcements. I have no idea if that would work at all, but it seems like it fits the general logic of the bestiary, and I like it.

@silverhart-makes-art (link to post here) has an interesting explanation in the linked post about how they decided to combine features of various desert-dwelling animals with the basic body plan of a peccary (which is apparently the same animal I know as a "javelina" -- I learn a lot looking stuff up while I write these posts). They then acknowledge that, without the context of all the things they're working in here, it kind of just looks like they've drawn a very large warthog. It's a very good hog, though. Something neat that you might miss if you're just looking at the drawing without the context of the post, for instance, is that it has the same fat-storing tail as a fat-tailed sheep. For more little bonuses like that, check out the linked post.

@cheapsweets (link to post here) has given us a whole herd of critters here. They've also hooked onto the "desert" thing due to the lack of physical description, collected traits from real-world animals that make them successful in a desert biome, and combined them into a new creature. They make me think of jackals, which aren't mentioned in the linked post, and also make me think of donkeys, which (kind of) are. Let's all take a moment to note the baby hiding behind a pile of rocks to the right, watching a smaller animal of some sort. I think it's cute.

CheapSweets also wonders about the significance of March 25th, and I have to say so do I. It's not explained in the text. The symbolism bit does say they call the same number of times during the day and night to represent the devil wanting to make day and night the same, which... what?

@pomrania (link to post here) clarifies that this is a grayscale rendering and that the animal would actually be a sort of dusty tan in a color version. They also went the direction of "this animal lives in the desert, so let's focus on desert adaptations." So we've got the split hooves and nostrils that can close to keep out sand. I particularly like the overhanging lip; it adds a certain charm, I think.

@coolest-capybara (link to post here) has decided that this is an excellent excuse to draw an elephant, since we're short on specific description beyond them living in Africa and being able to make loud noises. As a bonus, this means that the young Dikebael can be conveniently hidden behind the mother's large ears. The other aspects of this illustration relate to Coolest-Capybara having a pretty solid theory as to "why March 25th" -- apparently that's the Feast of the Annunciation, which of course the medieval author would have known. So here we have the Archelephant Gabriel trumpeting at Mary. (Actually it seems like the baby is doing the trumpeting, and it looks adorable doing it.) The linked post describes the medieval artworks that are being referenced in the illustration, so I recommend checking that out.

Anyway, time to check the Aberdeen Bestiary...

... well, we can't, actually. The Aberdeen Bestiary is missing a few folios, and this is on one of those. I got the text from MS Bodley 764, since I have a print translation of that one and it's fairly similar. For the illumination, we're going to go to the digitized Ashmole Bestiary, which is even more similar but I don't have a translation of it.

So this is the onager or wild ass.

Interestingly, it looks pretty much identical to the image of the tame ass on the same page, but to be fair, I don't think I'd be able to distinguish between an onager and a donkey with any reliability. Makes one wonder why they have separate illustrations, though.

And yeah, I have no additional explanation for why... any of the stuff in the entry.

Future subbing plans

When I first put Hurricane Touchdown out three years ago (goodness, has it really been that long already?!), I wasn't really planning to make fansubbing a regular thing, but after having worked on the Saint Tail project enough, I've started getting a little more used to it, so I decided to put a little more proper thought on what I want to do with it. This post will only be here, so my Tumblr followers can consider this to be an exclusive scoop ☺️

Regarding Hurricane Touchdown: As probably many of you know, Discotek Media recently announced an upcoming release of the first three Digimon movies, which, naturally, will include the Japanese version of Hurricane Touchdown. As is etiquette for fansubbers, I will be removing the download links for the Hudie release once that drops. However, I will be leaving the translation script file accessible to preserve the hard work done on it, and to leave it accessible for anyone who can't use the Discotek version for any reason (importation issues, region locks, etc.).

Raw script files can still be used with videos by putting them in the same folder as the video and giving them the same name, and the transcript is very easy to open with any standard text editor, so I think this will be a good compromise to keep the translation accessible and easy to reference. This is a workflow I started using with Saint Tail due to the unusual nature of its localization situation, but it's something I think I want to consider making use of going forward as well.

Regarding Saint Tail: Nothing really special to report here; I'll be releasing and revising sub scripts as usual until I've finished the series (I'm hoping to get it done by the end of the year). I haven't made a firm decision as to what will happen after that, but since it is a fact that the official release still has serious translation problems, I do think I want to do something to address that a little more aggressively once it's done.

Regarding Digimon Adventure 02: The Beginning: Based on the US screenings of the movie, it seems that the official English subtitles for the Japanese version are actually a transcript of the English dub, but with Japanese names swapped in. Surprisingly, this isn't as much as a detriment to the translation as you'd think it might be (the English dub script seems to be surprisingly close to the Japanese script, rather unusually for Digimon standards), but nevertheless, this is extremely bad translation practice and offends me on a personal level. As such, if future releases turn out to still be using this translation, I am considering making my own subtitled script for it.

For the record, because of how close the English dub script is to the Japanese script, I don't think this is actually that much of a detriment to understanding the movie; in fact, I would argue that LAST EVOLUTION Kizuna's official English subtitles are far worse and mistranslated in a more dangerous way. A theoretical The Beginning fansub would be, at most, something that would be done to satisfy a personal pet peeve and to address some minor loss in nuance that isn't reflected in the dub script, especially in regards to the Chosen Child partnership lore it presents (something that I know can be quite a serious issue to a lot of Digimon fans). So I'm not going to make guarantees about whether I'm going to do it in the end, and I wouldn't get your hopes up if I were you, but I do at least want people to know that this is an issue and that I currently have this idea on the table. As with Hurricane Touchdown, if I do put this out, it probably would be in script-only form.

As a side note, I do plan on translating The Beginning-related material (interviews, etc.), but I would rather put them up at a time when a sufficiently large percentage of fans has actually seen the movie. If you're from a non-American country and your country will be having a screening in the near future, please reply to this post with the date so I can get a good idea of when people will be watching it ☺️

I sort of think of you as an expert when it comes to K-Pop, media literacy and topics that deal with queer themes, given your writings on Taemin's work for example. I hope my inquiry won't be considered a waste of time because I know you don't deal with silliness in your inbox, but I will try my luck.

I will admit that I keep up a bit with the BTS members, albeit scarcely. I happened to read on twitter (known as X now) that through his artistic expression, Taehyung is either indicating he is queer or perhaps a suporter (an ally just like Valentina) of the community. All that is supposedly apparent in his first solo music video, with references to queer cinema or the clothes he's wearing for a photoshoot. Of course, this is not the first time this has been speculated in online circles. I'll post a link at the end of this message so you could get an idea of what I'm trying to explain.

What I would wish for is a more unbiased opinion from someone with vast knowledge and a cultural background and who doesn't feel the need to prove anything about their bias. At least I think he's not your bias. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Despite there being a high probability that this ask is a put-on, I’m going to take it at face value and reply in earnest.

I looked at the link you sent, which was a tweet of a Russian video purporting to tie the films Velvet Goldmine (1998) and Jubilee (1978) to Taehyung’s recent MV and, seemingly, his identity. I can’t read the Russian blocks of text in the video, but I can see the split-screen shots comparing Tae to characters in Velvet Goldmine. I can also see that Taehyung appears to wear a shirt of the film Jubilee in a promotional photo.

Now, I’m old enough to have been around when Velvet Goldmine came out; it’s a film about sexuality and aesthetics in the glam rock era, and it not-so-subtlety tells, at least in part, a take on the long time rumour of David Bowie and Mick Jagger’s liaison as lovers during glam rock days. In all honesty, I cannot see how this film in any way, shape, or form, has any relation to Taehyung’s “Love Me Again” MV beyond perhaps they both involve sequinned outfits.

“Love Me Again” is a slightly moody, barebones MV of Taehyung singing in a Spanish cave surrounded by retro items. His hair is a golden mess, while his clothes are cheap sequin getups with golden chains around his neck. Tae is moody in his MV, but he’s no glam rocker. He’s a crooner lost in time and confused. He ends the MV practically disgruntled. For me, the through line of the exotic setting, the props and the styling doesn’t quite come through. So, there wasn’t a lot for me to take away from Taehyung’s MV, but when all his MVs are released, I will watch them in order and share my thoughts. Again, I don’t see any meaningful relation between these two works. And certainly I don’t see anything overtly queer about Taehyung’s MV. If someone wants to come with concrete examples of “he said X” or “he did X” or “he wore X,” then I can consider such things.

And about his clothes: Derek Jarman was an important gay rights activist in the UK. But his activism was, more generally, in the 1980s onward, and focused on certain laws that effected education in the UK as well as raising awareness of the AIDS epidemic. These are very important works, especially to me living in Britain as a queer person. However, the film Jubilee is not about that work. It’s a punk film in response to the Queen’s Jubilee in 1977, and it presents a dystopian future of monarchical Britain and features some of the best punk bands of the time, including The Slits and Adam and the Ants. That shirt is about the punk movement - an important movement in Britain to be sure, but it isn’t centred on queerness.

My advice to Kpop fans looking for queerness in Kpop is to start with those who are doing concrete things in the genre: Holland and OnlyOneOf are a great place to start. Then you can look at Taemin, Key and SHINee as a whole, and reach out from there. SHINee’s “My Identity” from the album Hard (2023) was played at Seoul pride this year. I’d really recommend having a listen. And before a critical interloper writes in to say that everything queer must be cryptically coded because SK isn’t safe for LGBT+; I’m very aware of the rights people are lacking in SK. However, there are levels to meanings in art, and every artist has their own comfort zone when it comes to what they wish to share, and what they wish to be “unlock-able,” and what they wish to keep firmly for themselves. What I don’t think is helpful is conspiracy-level theories about art being queer-coded. That’s because art is already meant to interact with its audience; what a piece of art means to you is what is the most important. If you find something that speaks to your queer side in Taehyung’s work, than for you, that’s what his work is. That doesn’t mean his identity matches yours. There’s no need for that. That’s the beauty of art.

As a postscript, this shot here is exactly what reminds me of Key’s solo work: spooky retro style. That’s Key’s signature, which has been a personal extension of certain works in SHINee’s oeuvre (like “Married to the Music”). What remains unclear for me is what this union of elements signifies for Taehyung.

i had one from someone in my inbox from YONKS ago that tumblr is not letting me post for some reason. that person also sent me an ask about whether i could provide links to the videos/places i found the comments on (i would just answer their ask but it explicitly references their submission which, again, tumblr won't let me post... and also it was from ages ago) so let me answer that here

unless i think that mentioning the source amplifies the comment, or provides some humorous context, i usually don't do that as a general rule. if someone asks for the comment source and i still remember what it was, i'll tell them, but i don't tend to mention it explicitly on the post itself

i don't tend to redact pfps or usernames (to give some form of credit to the authors of the comments, sometimes they make the comment better, they're already public on the internet & usually posted on videos by youtubers exponentially more popular than my blog & usually post obscure comments i had to scroll for quite a while to find anyway, it's fun when someone recognizes their own username, etc etc), so this is an alternate method of security against people trying to be weirdos to the featured commenters. most of my posts come from youtube, which doesn't even have a direct messaging system anymore, which is simultaneously why i feel fairly comfortable leaving pfps/usernames unredacted on these comments and why i feel it's better if i try not to provide TOO many context hints at least in the actual text of the post. just on the off chance some bitter weirdo wants to try being a bitter weirdo, you know? and if someone goes all the way out of their way to try and track these comments down explicitly to bully these people, then at this point, it kinda seems like redacting that stuff wouldn't have helped anyway. while i definitely do not condone harassing anyone from here, i also... don't think it'd exactly be My fault there, and entirely the fault of this hypothetical extremely brainrotted rando. this has, to my knowledge, never once happened, but just putting that out there

i do give little hints or context notes in the tags on occasion, under the general assumption that anyone following this blog knows that this is a place of comment appreciation, an art gallery of Internet Humans. usually it only extends to mentioning the youtuber or what type of video it was, but as a general statement. this is the other part of my philosophy here: i enjoy hunting for comments as a sort of peoplewatching-esque hobby and i think other people should try it out (so long as they have the self-restraint to NOT reply to people even if they make you mad. it's never worth it man.). i also think it'd be a fun treat for someone to only get a hint, figure out what video it was, and then go on their own hunt and see the comments in the wild. i often skip over Loads that don't quite make the cut so you'll probably find something else fun in there

another day, another pro gun "Christians" swaying souls into hell by twisting the Scriptures

This one is going to be long and I know that hardly anyone will read it, but I actually do it for 1) for God who explicitly told me to "do my part" and 2)the 1% of Christians who are actually dedicated to follow Christ and not trample the word of God because of their sinful entitlement to murder.

If even one (1) person reading this actually changes their mind on gun violence than it will be a Grace from the Lord and I am glad of being a useful servant of Christ.

I'm going to call out the misquote, dishonesty and LIES of typical pro gun Christians. Since tumblr isn't really handy for text formatting I'm going to color code every "chapter" of the exposé to smoothen up the read

1. Israelites prerogatives ≠ Christian prerogatives

I'll tackle down the tumblr user reply to the ask later, to focus on the link she posted as a "pretty well done exploration" as of why gun violence is seemingly a-OK to Christians.

I'd like to start off saying that every Christian using Old Testament Prescriptions to legitimize the use of violence to CHRISTIANS is either, uneducated about basic Christian theology, a liar, a false prophet or a maybe everything at once. That's why this website quoting plentiful of OT (=Old Testament) prescriptions FIRST is a very bad omen forecasting the piss poor theology that's going to unfold in that page.

Israelites had to abide to specific rules and commandments that matched their own very specific purpose : they had to fight/go to WAR to create the EARTHLY kingdom of God. The commandment compelling to not kill was only for Israelites (because Israelites went to war and killed cities foreign to Israel). And even within the Kindgom of Israel, there were cases where murder was allowed in situations when it was sanctioned by God to kill (those caught breaking the sabbath had to stoned, for example).

Ever since Jesus crucifixion and the veil got torn, Christians don't abide to the prescriptions of Israelites. There's no more kingdom of God on earth. There are chances that you, who's currently reading this, are living in a country with defined frontiers that you don't have to go to war to defend and/or expand (as God told you to).

We do not abide to the 613 commandments of Israelites anymore : we can eat pork (no more "impure food"), don't have to stone anyone not doing the sabbath, circumcise newborn son, etc.

Interestingly, the same Christians who use OT prescription enabling the use of violence and murder, don't feel compelled to follow the other set of commandments abiding to Israelites. They're cherry-picking what goes their way simply because they a) don't understand the Bible b)are dishonest.

Israelites had to obey to ALL commandments - disobeying to one, was like disobeying to the WHOLE Torah (James 2:10-11)

Feel entitled to Israelites rights? Fine, abide to their OBLIGATIONS, too.

You think you still have God sanctioned right to kill? Then keep that same energy for the other 600+ commandments of those having the same right : do the sabbath, circumcise your sons, stop eating pork, stone adulterous people, etc etc. You cannot be a CHRISTIAN while abiding to cherry-picked Law prerogative. You cannot have it both ways.

2. The bigger picture

In the tumblr post reply, she refers to the passage in Luke where Jesus lets his disciple arm themselves moments before he gets arrest. This passage is infamously misquoted by pro gun zealots. Their trick is that they ALWAYS disregard the second part of the story where Jesus scold the very person who used their weapon to protect him (Peter) and went as far as heal the man, which shows how dishonest they are. But that's not enough ;

In the website she linked, we reach a whole new level of Scriptural twisting dishonesty

It's interesting how this person is switching the word of the passage from "sword" to "gun". I'll elaborate on this later on the point #3, but the "sword" is a very significant symbol in the Bible, and seeing this person recklessly replace it with a "gun" truly shows how off base they are when it comes to biblical literacy. Bad theology all around.

"It is difficult to make absolute claims beyond these observations" then why quoting those passage in a pro gun defense article? If you can't draw a conclusive interpretation from that passage, what's the point of bringing it up?

Jesus giving his consent for his disciple to bring along weapons doesn't mean he endorsed their use. Jesus said "That's enough", not "That's good" or "That's right". The Bible is full of examples of God "consenting" to humans carrying on their sin up until a certain point. It doesn't mean God condoned the sin itself. And yet, many pro gun Christians use this cherry-picked passage of Jesus in Gethsemane to act like Jesus endorsed gun use.

Jesus explicitly saying ""Put your sword in its place, for all who take the sword will perish by the sword" and ""Stop! No more of this" are pretty clear, actually. The author quotes them here :

It's not that we're "getting a sense of(...)", OP. That's literally what Jesus says, that's not an impression or a feeling. What's more straightforward then saying "Stop" when witnessing a violent act? why are you acting like there was any ambiguity about the actual intention or message of Jesus saying that? There's not. Jesus doesn't want violence to happen. Period.

But you wanna know why the author is acting oblivious about the straightforwardness of those passages ? because if they admit that Jesus rebuked violence, then their stance in favor of gun violence ends up moot. So they act dumb.

Note that after that explanation, the author states : "The sword is not always the appropriate response, especially in persecution for Christ." but they miserably fail in showing in what situation using the sword is actually an "appropriate response" beside quoting the Old Testament (which I already explained in point #1 why Christians weren't entitled to OT prescriptions). And when they do quote the New Testament, they do so in a fashion that leaves out the whole picture to twist the actual message of that passage (e.g quoting Luke‬ ‭22‬:‭35‬-‭38 to act like Jesus condoned gun carrying when he allowed to do so to publicly rebuke them later and make his point known to a multitude of people)

3. Jesus is the Sword - not guns

Now I'd like to reflect on the Sword that is repeatedly used in the Bible, and what it actually represents in the Gospel (plot twist : not guns)

One fundamental staple of a sound theology is acknowledging that words usage do matter in the Bible and are particularly relevant when they are consistently rehashed through the books. The Sword is one of them.

I'd like to quote verses of the New Testament featuring the Sword

Ephesians 6:17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

The Sword is SPIRITUAL. And you know who's the "Word of God"? JESUS (John 1:1 and 14)

Here the God of Word is again metaphorically represented as a sharped tool ("sharper than any twoedged sword")

Matthew 10:34 “Do not think that I came to bring peace on the earth; I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.

Only Jesus is entitled to carry a Sword ; because HE is the Sword. Has Jesus used a physical sword to kill people while on earth? or called his disciples to carry a physical sword? in Luke 22:35-39 in which Jesus tells them to "buy" a sword, a few moments later he rebukes the one who actually used it, so it's definitely NOT a physical sword he was talking about. Why would Jesus incite his disciples into possessing something (carrying a sword) only to scold them for using it moments later?? it doesn't make any sense. His disciples definitely got something wrong in the process (=understanding the sword as something physical, not spiritual). That's why reading Luke 22:35-36 as elevating weaponry as godly sanctioned is a total misconception.

The Sword that Jesus does bring is SPIRITUAL. He's the Sword of the Spirit that will separate His children from the rest of the flock. The joint vs the narrow. The goat vs the lamb. Heaven vs Hell.

Pro guns are misguiding people into believing that guns are the equivalent of the "sword" that's talked about in the Bible. That couldn't be more untrue.

Either those people either know that the biblical Sword = Jesus and LIE about it to project what they want into Jesus teaching, or they don't and by their ignorance, they are professing a destructive theology that's bewildering many Christians. Hosea 4:6

This person is LYING to you. That's why they obsessively resort to quote prescriptions for ISRAELITES to back up their falsehood. The Philistines aren't a thing anymore. CHRISTIANS don't have a Kingdom to protect & expand. Christians are dispatched through the Nations - there's no more united "people of YHYW nation". The only relevant kingdom to defend is THE SPIRITUAL KINGDOM OF GOD.

Possession of weapons is discouraged in the sense that Christians aren't entitled to violence (see point #4). This is the same logic as acknowledging that Christians shouldn't possess porn videos because adultery is forbidden. And inb4 the comparison with knives (who can also be used a deathly weapons) : knives actually have a purpose beside hurting or killing. Normal people don't buy knive having in mind hurting someone ; therefore owning them isn't sinful.

To show you how dishonest this person is, look at them quoting Romans 12:19 that states to "NEVER take [our] revenge".

How "NEVER". is remotely compatible with "oh in some cases it's okay to use violence"?? And yet it doesn't seem to ring a bell into the author's mind. Crazy.

Then the author proceeds to make the more asinine examples of "good" use of violence

As tackled in point #1 the shady usage of Israel prescription to justify how CHRISTIANS can use violence is an instant giveaway of bad theology and should be dismissed when it comes to CHRISTIAN (not Jewish) theology

But can we also talk about the author saying that David is "not a soldier???" KING David? who spend almost his whole life FIGHTING IN WARS and building the foundation of the Kingdom of Israel?? "NOT a solider"???? .......This person can't be serious, and I'm legitimately embarrassed for anyone taking seriously anything coming from this page.

Then the author compels to use to look into worldly entertainment(??!!) for example of proper use of violence *shrugs*

The cognitive dissonance of quoting Romans 12:19 ("Never take your revenge") just after elevating -full of violence and aggressiveness- gunfight/Western movies as an example of "great virtue" is mind-blowing....

4. God is the only self-defense

The reason some Christians rely on their gun -instead of God- is because of their unfaithfulness.

They don't believe that God can protect them when needed, so instead they elevate physical weapons and shoe horn them as biblical.

They also undermine God's power by acting like beside physical violence, we cannot help people :

This couldn't be further from the truth!! There are NO EXAMPLE IN THE BIBLE OF CHRISTIANS USING VIOLENCE TO SAVE PEOPLE.

Abiding in the Lord asks for resilience and Love. Which is someone pro gun Christians desperately lack. Love is not compatible with Death.

The reason Jesus didn't resort to use violence against the men who came to arrest him (when he could) is out of obedience to the Lord. Non-violence is a direct commandment from God ; therefore Christianism is fundamentally non-violent.

Do not envy the violent or choose any of their ways

Matthew 5:38-39

“You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’ But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also.

Therefore, every Christian defending the use of violence are disobeying God ; and every child of rebellion will end up in Hell.

No human is entitled to kill another creature of God. Their body belong to God, and we are not entitled to "steal" God's property.

TL;DR :

every Christian using Old Testament Prescriptions to legitimize the use of violence to CHRISTIANS, is either uneducated about basic Christian theology, a liar, or a false prophet

You cannot be a Christian while feeling entitled to the Law prerogative. If you want to be entitled to murder like the Israelites, then you necessarily have to abide to the same Law as them. Christians can't have it both ways : the Law is incompatible with the Grace & Salvation covenant (Romans 8)

Jesus giving his consent for his disciple to bring along weapons doesn't mean he endorsed their use. Jesus said "That's enough", not "That's good" or "That's right". The Bible is full of example of God "consenting" to humans carrying on their sin up until a certain point. It doesn't mean God condoned the sin, but rather let humans learn & grown from their mistake.

lesbiphobia on the lgbta+ wiki

we need to talk about the biased and childish behavior of the lgbta+ wiki admins. i've mentioned the lesbian page and its recent issues before (although admittedly not that in-depth yet - [X] [X]) but it only got worse and i'm so fucking angry that i'm shaking. long post. let's go.

an accessibility note for screen readers and images before we get started: [image ids: four cropped screenshots taken from the comment section of the lesbian page on the lgbta wiki (note: the slashes between the @‘s and the username are not part of the username, but to prevent users from potentially being tagged).]

i'll firstly start by acknowledging that they removed the male lesbians section. i'm thankful and it's a start but it's the bare minimum and lesbians still have a right to be hurt and upset.

addressing how comments get addressed (made by content mod reign of the breadsticcs in these cases):

keeping it simple: they don't. not well, at least. but obviously i'm gonna go more in-depth with examples:

1)

[image one ID: a comment by wiki user @/shadesystem, who references one of the quotes previously in the article, which was: “those who are strictly wlw may use feminosexual or trixamoric, however monosexual lesbians are still welcome to identify as lesbians if they feel it fits their experience.” end quote. shadesystem follows the quote up with their own personal thoughts, which reads: “delete this sentence cause idk how its supposed to be read but what i’m seeing is, ‘you may identify if you want but just know that like, you’re not really a lesbian if you dont like men or enbies’ basically or ‘you may identify if you want but just know that like, you’re not really a lesbian if you’re not a man or nonbinary.’ i’m a xenogirl lesbian who likes enbies, but this sentence hurt. it really hurt.” end text. one of the wiki’s moderators, @/reign of the breadsticcs, replies with: “removed, sorry about that.” end text and end screenshot.]

i hadn't even noticed this in the article at first but i am beyond pissed off at the implied priority here. shadesystem has already laid out everything for me with the subtle "you may identify as a lesbian if you want, but just know that, like, you're not really one if you don't like men or aren't a man" which is pretty much what that says right between the lines!

mspec lesbians have not just breached our label and twisted it in a harmful way at this point. i've always hated them but i thought at least that they'd recognize that they're only borrowing our label to emphasize a bias in attraction - as it turns out, they've now gone so far in that direction that they're now telling Real lesbians who lack attraction to men that they do not qualify for the label. we've been kicked out of our own label. i'll expand a little more on this under the next screenshot but i'm beyond disgusted and i completely understand op's hurt.

i can read for myself that the mod apologized for that statement and removed it, but that's not good enough, especially since it was so short, unsympathetic, and half-assed. it almost sounds sarcastic, even. not to mention all the damage this wiki causes and has caused, knowing that they're seen as such a huge and well-known source of information among the entire online lgbta+ community. i can't and won't be accepting that apology anytime soon.

[image two ID: a comment by wiki user @/lotions, which reads: “the fact that the admins of this wiki are blocking anyone who shows any criticism towards the new label is very childish. most of the sources backing this up are from tumblr and a carrd link which arent credible in the slightest. at least link the actual sources or else no one is going to take this seriously. another thing: why are all these sources american? i want a genuine answer to that. i cant even begin to talk about how much the male lesbian section reeks of transphobia.” end text, and then lotions quotes a phrase previously from the article, which is: “For example, straight transgender men who feel that their attraction to women can still be described as lesbian due to their trans identity being queer, although they are still men” end quote. lotions follows the quote up with their personal thoughts, which read: “you are completely contradicting yourself while writing this. i find it completely useless for this wiki to lump in bisexuality and lesbianism together in the modern day, considering that both parties have separated themselves from each other and are commonly seen as separate but yknow.” end text. their comment is replied to by reign of the breadsticcs, whose reply reads: “this is not a new label. this has always been the label. the parties separated because of harmful exclusionism. they’re commonly seen as separate because of harmful exclusionism. that’s not a valid reason to try and keep them separated. also, trans men are queer, so they can be lesbians because lesbians don’t have to be women. queer men can be lesbians, and the trans identity is queer, so trans men can be lesbians. i know several trans men who identify as lesbian. the sources are american because the history we discuss here is largely american-central, and was later globalized. we are not blocking people for having questions, we are blocked people for spreading harmful information. you don’t have to like it, but it’s our responsibility, so with all due respect, deal with it.” end text and end screenshot.]

next i wanna talk about the points made in this post and debunk them; to say i'm displeased with everything i’m about to unpack here would be an understatement. they were so dismissive and condescending to lotions and although that's less important, i can't say it gives them a good look over there.

"this has always been the label. the parties separated because of harmful exclusionism. they're commonly seen as separate because of harmful exclusionism. that's not a valid reason to try and keep them separated."

this mod is so uninformed it hurts. do they not realize that the reason why we're separated is because bi sapphics WANTED to be seen as their own group with their own experiences, which are different from lesbians but still remain in solidarity? had we not listened to their voices, they Would still be the same thing. bi women would be considered lesbians and that would definitively be considered bi erasure and by extenstion, biphobia.

the other thing with their comment is the implication that "harmful exclusionism" is the reason why we're no longer ALLOWED to consider bi and lesbian to be separate identities - not even via marginalized individuals who use these contradictory labels because they may feel that best describes their experiences, but in General now, if you do not consider mspec attraction to be the ONLY valid and true way to be a lesbian, you are lesbiphobic! you must realize that because of "harmful exclusionism", we have to make it clear now that lesbians can be anything and anyone, men who are attracted to men, even! /s i genuinely wish more people would realize that not all exclusionism is harmful, especially within the lgbta+ community. yes, sometimes it is, but sometimes it's neutral, and in cases like these, it's necessary and beneficial - not just "gatekeeping."

"also, trans men are queer, so they can be lesbians because lesbians don't have to be women. queer men can be lesbians, and the trans identity is queer, so trans men can be lesbians. i know of several trans men who identify as lesbian."

this comment simply reeks of transphobia and nothing else. also, the fact that you "know trans men who identify as lesbians" is no justification or valid argument, so that was completely redundant and unnecessary to include.

it's not acceptable to say that anyone who is queer may identify as lesbian. if they mean the same thing, then why use the word lesbian at all? what does the term lesbian even mean if absolutely anyone of any background or identity can be it? it's not just a "feeling" - what does that "feeling" mean? "i feel so i am" completely erases what labels mean. i don't think radically-inclusive people hear themselves when they speak half the time, honestly - at least, i hope that's the case and not something worse, like them being completely aware of what they say.

the mod is right only when they said that lesbians don't have to be women. however, taking it that far was stretching it. nonbinary people are included in every sexuality but not every single nonbinary individual is. it's such a broad spectrum that you can't include everyone into everything - it's selective. some aligned people are okay with being included under certain types of attraction, some aren't. some unaligned people are okay with one type of gendered attraction but not others. some unaligned people are okay with any type of gendered attraction. but this logic doesn't work with "so male-aligned nonbinary people can be okay with falling under lesbian attraction too, right?" because the binary genders and their associated circles are mutually exclusive when talking about closed labels such as lesbian and (mlm) gay/cinthean.

you clearly understand how to separate one type of history from another, so why does that not apply for attraction?

anyway, this part isn't as important but if you're so focused on justifying bi lesbians with history, why are you so biased about it? this is an informative wiki; talking only about american history on a tumblr blog would be fine, but being so closed-off about the information you give on a site like this doesn't come across as a good move.

i guess i can't complain here too much because this is a private website where its administration can treat its outside contributors however they please. but speaking on a more morally-fair note, shutting any and all visible criticizors up for disagreeing with the administration team is straight-up childish and immature - and in this case, hypocritical, seeing as how the mod said "you don't have to like [how we run things]." it's a two-way street here.

i get blocking users who go out of their way to harass other users, no matter what it's about (second screenshot). but that's not the main focus here. blocking people who speak out on issues that affect them, namely lesbiphobia, contributes to silencing lesbians and it's disgusting behavior. i've been decently respectful throughout this entire post, but i'm sure if i posted it on the wiki i'd get blocked simply for its negative and critical nature, which is... allowed, i guess, but not cool at all.

so, in conclusion, fuck the lgbta+ wiki and its administration team until they improve how they run their site and treat lesbians, especially those who stand up for themselves. frankly the validation of mspec lesbians at all shouldn't even be there but i'm gonna take this one small step at a time - like i said, i'm grateful they even bothered to take down the section about male lesbians...

edit 08.05.20: lazonline made a GREAT POINT in this post here that i’ve been unsure how to put into words for WEEKS about how the wiki heavily favors fighting biphobia over fighting lesbiphobia, if not actively encouraging it. they don’t care about lesbians AND bisexuals, ONLY bisexuals - i know this because one of the most (un)popular pages on the wiki is the semi-bisexual page, which is constantly (and rightfully so, don’t get me wrong!) put down and made fun of because it’s biphobic for... hmm... what reason again? oh yeah, right, non-bisexuals redefining what it means to be bisexual simply so that they can fit into a label that doesn’t belong to them - sound familiar much? but they have the exact opposite view on lesbians for some selfish careless reason. glad this was pointed out publicly, i really appreciate it. i’m also quite furious now at the hypocrisy.

Please be patient and understanding with me, I do this in my free time and though there is passion for the topic, I put alot of work into my original content or the advice I give. I'm only a (mentally ill) person who's barely able to work.

- Though I do enjoy socializing, please don't try to befriend me for perks, or cross some social boundaries. I know that should be obvious, but I've had people act way too comfortable in my dms, or expecting me to immediately do something for them, or pestering me about something that I haven't done yet, or am still working on. This is part of the reason for that prev section. I love helping people here, and it's not a matter of me having "high standards" for relationships. Simple fact is that I'm a stranger running this blog and though you as followers may learn things about me based on this blog, I don't know any of you personally, and vice versa. If you want me to boost something just say so and I'll gladly do it. But it feels really deceptive if someone comes to chat me up and then few replies in go "Can you reblog my post btw?" (Ps. - ADDITIONALLY. Do not dm me on my main or art blog with the expectation that I'd do you some favor or promo you or something similar. This blog is for all the fun creative help type stuff, if you come to me personally with the expectation that I'll do something for you, you will get ignored, bc honestly, it feels hurtful to think someone would wanna get to know me just for "I have a big blog" perks such as reblogs on your content. Listen, I really do understand how it is being a small artist (I am one myself! Even with a large following on here, I don't get alot of engagement on my personal art!), but remember that I am a person, and not doing this for profit. I am here for fun and the help I offer is with my own boundaries.

- Though I am an adult, this blog is intended to be friendly for minors too. Due to this if your ask or story contains mature themes, please put a warning upfront! This includes anything from homo- or transphobia, to abuse (sexual or otherwise), to self harm or issues with body image. Ect. And though I do believe it's important to talk about healthy and safe sexuality openly, it should be Context and age appropriate. So I will answer asks relating to sexual orientation for example, or talk about body parts in relation to character design or gender identity, due to representation. I will also answer asks relating to how to handle certain touchier topics (IF I feel I have anything valuable to talk about on the topic, and with the appropriate warnings attached!). But I will not answer any explicit asks (maybe, MAYBE privately, depending on the intent). I use heavy discretion on this but generally speaking I won't discuss explicit NSFW/kinks/fetishes/sex acts or generally things that are intended to be naughty and for an adult audience. Again, Heavy Discretion. I understand any forms of storytelling may contain explicit topics and it's also important to know how to handle those tactfully but if I feel an ask is too spicy, I likely will leave it unanswered. This blog is for general audiences, not specifically meant to be a "Kids" space, but appropriate for minors and youths ykno. Besides you shouldn't be on Tumblr if you're like, under 13, was it?

Bottom line is that darker topics will need responsible handling and I won't be tackling anything pornographic or anything I find inappropriate for this blog and it's audience. You may also use your own discretion depending on how heavily or explicitly your story handles darker topics, when sending an ask.

- Last but not least, be clear and upfront on what you're looking for! I can do a variety of things here. Stuff you can request including (but not limited to): Oc/story reviews (original or existing franchises), writing tips, art tips, input on an oc/story, art reviews (pls specify deliberately if you want constructive criticism on something), commentary, inspiration, prompts, boosting, names, ideas and so on. Just ask and we'll see about it! Depending on how big of a task your thing would be, it may take a longer while, be prepared for that. I answer asks a bit sporadically at times. to preface—airsts I'm still not totally sure what you want out of this. You aren't obligated to respond to anything I say—just like I'm not obligated to respond to you. We don't know each other, and this is kind of an unfortunate way for us to meet. Still, I hope we can have a productive conversation going forward. I'll go through everything and ask questions. The only other solution to what—suicide? unwanted pregnancy? incest? Is that really the only other solution? What are some policies you would like to see implemented to deal with each of these?

How do you define murder? How do you define what a human life is? Are there particular scientific facts or theories you make use of in your definition? If you have time, please either explain them, or reference an article/book/other source that does. I would like to learn! But I understand that fact checking is a lot of work so if you're too busy I understand.

(A note here—my knowledge of the situation is not as thorough as I would like it to be, but from what I know I'm not satisfied with the way abortion restrictions are being implemented in Texas. What are we doing—reporting each other to the secret police or something? Notifying the authorities of a crime is one thing, but why is there a finder's fee? Why are we sueing each other? This kind of thing will only breed corruption and mistrust.)

Huh, what am I a traitor to? Women? Is there a point of view that is specifically the "pro-women" point of view? Traitor makes this sound like a war—are there sides? are there good and bad guys? Who gets to define all of this?

No, I don't like it when girls are forced to birth a child conceived in incest. What are some ways that this situation could be prevented? Do you think that easy abortion access could ever perpetuate abuse by allowing abusers to get rid of the evidence of their actions? Is providing abortion services to victims of incest worth this risk? (and I mean that as a legitimate question, not a leading question)

(Another note here—I am pretty sure children who die in the womb can still be born naturally (hence the term "still-born"). But again, my knowledge here is limited and my issue with abortion is largely because of the harm it does to the child. If the child is dead already, and abortion is the only way to remove them, then I don't have a problem with this.)

Do you think adoption is the only way to take care of vulnerable children? Did you know that people who adopt sometimes need help raising funds to do so, or need help with babysitting, or need meals made and chores done for them? Did you know that mothers who raise their own children need these things too? Is this an attack on my argument, or an attack on me (ad hominem)?

Arists, I'm really sorry if I came off as "holier than thou." I'm not a better person than you. I know that I think I'm right—everybody does. But I do want to be open to hearing and learning from your perspective. Even if you don't change my mind, you can increase my empathy, and that's extremely valuable to me.

The purpose of this side-Blog is going to be - predominantly - to serve as a Codex/Appendix of sorts for my Cursed-verse fanfiction on AO3.

Because I tend to run off at the mouth & get a kick out of explaining or discussing my inspirations for plot decisions, more often than not citations within the story will probably link back to refence posts here rather than eat up 1K words of Author's End Notes 😜

Aside from - of course - chapter updates for my existing/ongoing Cursed-verse series & potentially a prequel character/clan origins series or series-adjacent Cursed-verse works, it will (hopefully) included visual references/inspirations for original/borrowed characters & locations 😁

Additionally, I'll be trying to include reference information discussing drawing some of my inspiration for world-building personal charactor backstories, as well as for both character & clan origin concepts and/or theories, from established Traditional Lore & existing texts pertaining to Brythonic (Welsh, Cornish & Breton) & Goidelic (Irish/Scottish) & Romano-British & even Greek mythology where applicable. I'll also, however, be "creatively re-interpreting" some of it in my how I apply it within the stories. I very much don't wish to misrepresent the lore or religious mythologies I'm drawing from or try to pass off my "creative re-imagining" as religiously 'canon', so I'll try to clarify with citations of some sort what texts I'm referencing my inspiration from vs what I'm putting my own spin on (or just flat-out making up, as the case may be) for plot purposes.

[To Be Clear: Although several of the texts I'm drawing from are core mythologies from my own religious practice & study, my appropriation - and/or MISappropriation - of them for my Cursed-verse fics are intended as my own personal HEAD-CANON for the STORIES only, NOT as a real-world treatise on "this is how You (or I) Pagan". Nor is it an endorsement of some of the offensive content within the texts themselves; the fact is, however, that Arthuriana Lore, as well as myth-cycle texts like both the 'Cath Maighe Tuireadh' & the 'Mabinogion', are rife with things like incest & infanticide & some really dubious consent that I don't plan on censoring out when applying their themes to my world-building. I welcome discussion of those themes & their context within the story, though. Love, Victor and it's problems

Hello! First post here! I know this isn't a movie, instead of a show, but I feel like I have a few things I have the urge to spill out, so here it goes.

I've watched both seasons of Love, Victor and finished the second one the day it came out, June 11. It's now June, 26 and I've let a few thoughts and problems I've had about the show sit in my brain for a while now but they're starting to get antsy. Is the show really that serious to pick it apart and point out its flaws? No, it's supposed to be a cute little show about a boy exploring his sexuality, and I know that. But man I can't help myself, what else am I suppose to do this summer anyway? So, that being said, let's get started!

Actually, before I start I just wanted to get out of the way that I am a queer girl myself, who is also a teenager, so that is the type of viewpoint I am watching this show through. Do with that what you will :D Now we can get started, here are the three main problems I had with the show;

i. The Writing

The writing of this show is... something else to say the least. It has its good moments for sure, but man is it hard to get through an episode without cringing once or twice. Now I am no writer myself, so I can't judge too hard, but I wish the show didn't try to fit in so many pop culture references and twitter lingo to try and appeal to teens. It's so obvious while watching that the writers themselves only have a vague idea on how to use it. There is a scene of the show that is going around on twitter, instagram and tiktok where a character says something along the lines of "We stan you!" and "We're all gay AF!" (link below for the whole video).

.... like... what? My god my body collapsed in on itself when I heard that. I think the writers maybe tried to make the line of "We're gay AF" as a cringy joke to show how oblivious the character was, but the line "We will forever stan you" shows how oblivious the writers are to the use of the word "stan", or at least that's how it came off the way the actor said it. The line is said with no implication that it's supposed to be cringy or something to laugh at. I don't know if the writers were aware at the time that this is something teenagers do not say about or to their friends unless they purposely want to sound out of touch. Someone in the replies even said "In real life that won't happen ever" and they're correct. This is just one instance where the writing feels shaky but there are many more sprinkled throughout the show. This probably is super nitpicky but it's just so prevalent in the show that I felt that I had to write about it.

ii. The Love Interests

Now on to another problem, The characters of Rahim & Benji. Let's start off with Benji. He serves as the love interest for the main character Victor, which is fine! It's great! Except it isn't because that's all Benji is... a love interest. He barely has any personality and the only three things I know about him are that he is gay, is in a band, and is a recovering alcoholic. With those three things, there is so much to do with his character. They mention in the show that his dad wasn't too happy when he came out, and brought him to a strip club in order to make him "straight". I thought maybe the show would show how his relationship with his dad has been damaged and how they're slowly trying to repair it, or maybe Benji doesn't want to forgive his dad and all! But no, the restaurant scene comes and everything seems fine like something as traumatic as your own father refusing to accept your sexuality and trying to convince you to be someone else never happened. If you're going to make your character go through something like that, it would be good to show its consequences, not to sweep it under the rug! In the first half of the season, if I remember correctly, we see almost every character in a different location doing their own storyline, except Benji, who only exists at school and in the coffee shop to show that he's Victor's boyfriend. I don't think there's a single scene where it's just Benji alone doing something that doesn't involve Victor. It isn't until the later episodes where he gets his own plotline, one that revolves around him being a recovering alcoholic and being 1 year sober. Now don't even get me started on this... the fact they waited a whole season and a half to get to this huge revelation?? This is a big part of Benji that he kept secret and they could do so much with it, but it ends up being just a plot device so that Victor can break up with him and end the season on a cliffhanger. It seems like every one of Benji's plot points is to benefit Victor in some way (all except for the band, but they also never expand on that either so :/). The other couples, for example, Lake & Felix, have their own problems and stuff they're going through, not just things to benefit their love interest story. I get that Victor is the main character, but if this show is about him discovering his sexuality, should his love interest be a huge part of that? Shouldn't there be more focused on his love interest rather on his best friend? I don't know that's just how I view it.

Rahim is Victor's second love interest who is introduced halfway through the second season in the episode called Sincerely Rahim. He, like Benji, the only purpose of his character is to serve as a love interest for Victor and create a love triangle that can end season 2 on a cliffhanger, just like season 1 did. The show cared even less about Rahim than they cared about Benji since they didn't even bother to show his coming-out scene. It sucks because he comes from a Muslim family and that coming out scene could've been really meaningful, for once showing a Muslim family being accepting of a gay son instead of shunning them, which is how the media normally portrays Muslim families.

iii. The couple bias

Probably my biggest problem with this show is the clear bias to the straight couples compared to the main gay couple of the show. Like I said before, Benji being a shell of a character compared to everyone else, I don't think that's a coincidence. I am aware that there was at least one gay writer on the team, but they didn't seem to make up the majority. It's obvious the writers felt more comfortable writing straight characters and couples (eg, Victor and Mia as a couple for the majority of season one) which is fine, but if you're writing a show with a gay couple in it then get gay writers who will actually understand and have an easier more natural approach to them. This is why I think diversity in the writer's room is just as important as diversity on screen. You can put a gay character in your show but if they're written by a straight person it's not going to feel authentic and can easily fall into stereotypes. But that's a conversation for another time.

Some other small problems I had but weren't worth a whole section

-The lack of sapphic women. I think they might start a wlw plotline the next season with Lake but man.. took them two seasons in a show that's suppose to be a representation to even hint at a sapphic relationship.

-Benji's timeline for his alcoholism... if he's 16 now (junior) and been sober for a year... that means he entered rehab when he was 15... which means he's been drinking heavily since he was like 14, so much so they had to put him in rehab?? Are his parents really that neglectful? This why I am so confused about his parents because what his dad did to him was awful and yet when they show Benji's parents, his mother seems to adore him and they are both extremely welcoming to Victor. The only reason I see why he would start drinking at such a young age is that he felt bad because of his sexuality... but man, at 14 do you even understand what's going on enough to be like "this is bad I should drown my sorrows in booze".... idk such a strange timeline.

-They didn't keep up Rahim's texts to Victor, it was one and done. I get that it was supposed to be like continuity with what Simon did to Bram and then what Victor did to Simon but it felt so forced that I wish they didn't do it at all. Felt like they just left it hanging there.... ok I will admit it is really nitpicky and I'll stop now I promise!

So... that's it! I know this can come off as annoying or I'm giving huge pessimist vibes because of this but I swear me having long rants about how I feel about a show's problems is rare. Normally I like deconstructing the parts I did like rather than the parts I didn't. I do think this show is cute and serves its purpose of entertaining, and I don't hold anything against someone who enjoys it! I can easily see this being someone's comfort show, and that's completely fine. I also realize that I did dig into the writers quite a lot here, so I just want to make it clear that in no way am I questioning their talent (one is a new york times bestseller and two others have been nominated for Emmys). Hopefully, my posts in the future will be more positive but for now, I hope this deconstruction was decent!
