WIP Tag Game
Thanks a lot for the tag @bgharison I’m stoked knowing you’re back to writing no matter how often or whatever. I can’t wait to read your McKono story. Even if I’m a hardcore McDanno shipper your writing secudes me to read your stories about other ships.
I have WIPs that lie dormant for quite some time now. The story I’m working at is in posting mode and drafted and therefore, no WIP. But I love to share some lines from that other WIP that is coming back online in my mind. In fact, I think about making it my next NaNo project. I started it about four years ago before I got pulled into the epic work of my high school McDanno fic.
It’s an AU where Danny is a carpenter and not ready for any relationships. He’s happy with hook ups for one night he gets to choose through dating apps. He has a dog and she’s always with him. His heart beats for abused animals. He wants to give them love and hope and a new forever home. He’s a successful business man and tough as nails, has a heart of gold and doesn’t do feelings. He decides to go an watch John Wick, the first movie. There he meets a stranger and his world isn’t the same anymore. That’s the rough summary of this AU. And here’s a snippet from that story:
At The Movies
Danny could watch rough fighting, bloody punches, mean behavior on screen between humans, but when it came down to hit a puppy with an iron rod to shut him up, his soul collapsed in his chest. The rawness of his feelings hit him like a sucker punch.
There was a special kind of brutality that made him feeling helpless, throwing him into an abyss of distress within seconds. Watching how a puppy got beaten to death was killing him. And exactly that was happening on screen. The scene where Daisy crawled up to an unconscious, bloody John to finally die next to him was the last straw.
Danny couldn't stand this pain that crushed his chest. He had to get the fuck out of that cinema. The screen was too big, the terrible pictures too intense. Cruelty against animals and children tore his soul from his body. He must have made a sound, trying to calm his inner horror. He wasn't sure about making this wrecked tone but he didn't want to draw attention to his person either. He bit into his fist, pressing it hard against his mouth. He teared up, feeling a panic rise in his chest. He closed his eyes to find some guidance. He was afraid to freak out. He was about to stand up, when a warm, solid hand searched for his wrist and pulled his fist from his mouth. Danny's nose didn't filter enough air, he had some tough moments where the panic was about to win.
Danny closed his eyes and didn't think how awkward this situation was. He wrapped his fingers around the handsome stranger's hand. He wasn't even ashamed of his weakness in that moment, he was only fighting not to drown in his inner hurt. His heart thundered in his chest. The good-looking man seemed to sense what was going on. He scooted closer to Danny and took his sweaty hand in his, holding it tightly pressed between his palms, squeezing in reassurance to make sure Danny was not alone. He pressed his shoulder comforting against Danny's, doing nothing more than to steady him with his touch.
The movie went on meanwhile Danny fought his inner meltdown. He registered how his seat mate turned, bringing his head closer to his ear.
"Hey, my name is Steve. Just breathe, the scene is over. But keep watching, John is going to take revenge for Daisy, hard and unforgivable. You might want to see that. It will give you some peace. And there's even a happy ending for John and another dog."
Danny nodded but couldn't look at the man, -- Steve. And Steve sat back but didn't let go of Danny's hand; he made him feel cared for, safe and somehow hugged in an invisible, sensitive way that was strange and unsettling for Danny. But he couldn't and didn't want to let go either.
I love those WIP tag games. I tag @stephmcx @space-ace-ravenclaw-demigod @mcdannoangelwolf @murphyhatesme I know you guys still write for McDanno. No pressure you all.

Hullo!
So, this might be long, but I wanted to write a proper wee writing update. I have my fingers in a few pies and as October is coming to an end, and thus "Bagginshield-tober" with it, I thought it might be nice to let folks know what my plans are as far as projects go!
I've got three chapters left to write for "Stealing Moments, Moments Away" - I've decided not to do the prompt for Sunday, so this weekend I'm going to park my butt in my desk chair and write those last few chapters. I'm out on Tuesday (my friend is doing a drag show, so I'll be at work all day, then going out for dinner and drinks right after) so I won't have time to update the final chapter on Tuesday. I'm thinking of updating Monday's chapter on Sunday, and Tuesday's on Monday, but we'll see!
Once that's done, I'm going to take a few days off! I wouldn't usually, but I've had such a busy month and I got a bit burned out there for a bit, so I think I need to start scheduling breaks for myself. Next weekend I'll get cracking on "Backs to the Wall" and hopefully get back to weekly chapter updates with that once again!
Now, I know folks were waiting for me to start "King" in November (because that was the original plan!) but if October has taught me anything, it's that I can't work on multiple projects, haha 😅 I had meant to do NaNoWriMo and work on it for that, but honestly? I got so stressed when I was writing "Poet" for Camp NaNo and it's actually the fic I'm least proud of in my whole collection. I've worked so hard on the series, I really want to do the finale justice!
I do feel bad because I know folks are waiting for this one, but I'm going to focus on "Backs to the Wall" first, then write the smutty one-shot set directly after "Poet" and then work on "King". I really hope no one is too disappointed, as it's likely that I won't make a start on it until the new year now - please forgive me! 🙏
After that I have another canon-verse one-shot that I've been toying with since day dot, and then I might branch out into some AU ideas. But that's a ways off yet!
I know this is a bit of a long post, and honestly I don't know how much anyone will be interested in any of this, but I just wanted to document it somewhere for anyone who might be wondering what I'm up to! I wouldn't want to leave anyone hanging, especially after changing plans with regards to what I'm working on in November.
Thank you to everyone who has been reading and supporting and showing any kind of interest in my little fics! I mean to keep scribbling out my silly bagginshield nonsense for a good while yet, so your enthusiasm keeps me going!
Ily guys! 💛

8. What project(s) are you currently working on?
Here's the breakdown!
Immediate/Active WIPs:
The Fighter (Luke/Leo) - currently in progress is this piece where Parker returns Leo to the government prematurely and Leo freaks, also on the immediate docket is continuation of the hospital arc and a Rob/Leo piece
Belleview (Felix) - currently in progress is a piece where another former worker befriends/attempts to protect a very unwell felix
Derek's Back (Derek/Jack) - nothing currently in progress, but if I had to guess what was next I'd guess a past-prison piece
On My Mind but Inactive:
Make It Better (AFTG Fandom) - Next up is Andrew learning Neil is still alive (this is so niche)
Midnight (BOM) - Next up is the 4 years delayed last chapter
Hallelujah (BOM) - I'll never let go Jack, we'll revisit eventually
Hello (BOM) - Same as Hallelujah, I won't give up these children I just will not
On My Mind for the Future:
Original Novel for Nano - This cabin in the woods-esque piece wherein there is much suffering and h/c
How to Break a Billionaire (Ardy/Caspian) - At least two fics for this series bang around in my head off and on whenever I'm feeling jazzy
This one-shot for AFTG that details Andrew's time in rehab

🏴‍☠️ This is your Captain speaking 🏴‍☠️
So I thought I'd make a little post to encompass some important updates and some changes that you'll probably notice around the old blog in the next few months! However, I will do you all the courtesy of putting this under a cut because holy mama it turned out longer than I expected 😅
Tumblr media
Updates
I'm doing my first NaNo this year!!! I'm excited but also really nervous because 50K is an aggressive goal and I'm not sure I can do it BUT I decided that I'm just going to try my best. I won't be starting a new project for this, instead, I want to use this as a time to beef up AASOAF 3 as I'm a little behind where I'd like to be in terms of progress.
AASOAF 3 has a release date! Err, more like release season lol. The announcement is here in case you missed it, and includes some beautiful Mariel and Fay art for you to feast your eyes on! Spring 2024 is the time to watch so keep a close eye on the new release tag, witness moonrise on oepus, for any content/posts related to release activities! Obligatory plug for AASOAF 3's masterpost and taglist so you don't miss a thing!
M.O.W will go on a brief hiatus at the end of November. But don't despair, it will return in January 2024! I decided that this series will take a month-ish hiatus at the end of each part so Part I will be nice and wrapped up before it goes on a break. Obligatory plug for M.O.W's masterpost and taglist so you don't miss a thing!
Work on AASOAF 3's super secret companion material has begun! For reasons I hope are clear, I can say nothing about this other than to look for it in Spring 2024 when AASOAF 3 releases. Just know that I'm super stoked to be teaming up with @illjustpretend again for this project and it's going to be an even bigger undertaking than Mariel & Axtapor's Scrapbook was for AASOAF 2.
Tumblr media
Changes
Now you might be reading all of those things and be thinking, "Wow Nopal, that's super cool but isn't it a lot?" To that, I say, "Indeed, dear reader it is." But know that I do this to myself because writing is genuinely what I love to do and, let me toot my own horn here for a second, my stories deserve no less!
However, these things combined with work and a few other things going on in my personal life (all other good and exciting I assure you!) mean that I need more of that constructed but dreadfully measurable commodity: time. So you will likely see less of me around here but that doesn't mean I'm disappearing!
Believe it or not, this little corner of tumblr has become a huge part of my life. I love reading about y'all's stories, updates, and getting to cheer you on as you go do The Thing so I'll definitely be around 😊 Tag games and asks will most likely fall by the wayside though advanced apology for that 😅
Anyway, I think that's all for now! (I write as if this wasn't already long enough LOL) Wishing you all fair winds in your sails and many words on your pages 💙

chayscribbles’ monthly writing update ☆ june 2023
☆ STATISTICS.
words written: 13 022
projects worked on: Andromeda Rogue mostly but i've been swatting at Shiny New Ideas left and right with a tennis racket. also i thought about Gemini Heist really really hard and i think that counts for something
proudest accomplishment: AR1 draft 2 is done!!!!!!
books read: After Atlas by Emma Newman; Everyone In My Family Has Killed Someone by Benjamin Stevenson; Exit Strategy (Murderbot Diaries #4) by Martha Wells. all excellent reads. (sidenote two out of three of these books involve murder investigations and the third has murder in the title. i'm sensing a theme in my reading.)
☆ GENERAL COMMENTS.
i am still terrible at being consistent at writeblr-ing. i guess this is just my life now.
i'm debating using camp nano to actually hunker my ass down and get some writing done on gemini heist, but between work and apartment hunting and a possible move by the end of the month i don't know how feasible that's gonna be :') we'll see.
and no i'm not glossing over the fact that i have a finished second draft. i'm just saving my screaming for below the cut.
more specific wip-related comments + featured excerpt below.
☆ COMMENTS: ANDROMEDA ROGUE (draft 2)
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(i wasn't kidding about the screaming.)
so this draft now sits at 85.7K, which is about 11.8K added from the first, and although it is still faaar from perfect it is definitely... better than the draft i finished 2 years ago. it's insane how much my writing has improved, between all the reading i've been doing and first drafting the two sequels of the trilogy.
that being said there still are a lot of things i know need to be fixed, but i'm at the point where if i try to fix them on my own i'll be stuck on them forever.
enter the betas!!! i'm planning on doing an ~official~ beta call next week but honestly if you're interested in beta-ing this book feel free to hmu right away!! ultimately i want to self-pub this thing (which is quite overwhelming to think about hhhhh) but one thing at a time :')
☆ FEATURED EXCERPT.
i really couldn't decide what snippet to post so this was admittedly chosen a bit at random lmao. this is from when the gang is approaching their destination for their expedition.
On the external display, Mohani loomed ahead, growing larger every second. The planet was almost entirely a deep blue, except for some white spots at its poles. It reminded Finneas of his final glimpse of Ghillairde when he was leaving it behind for the last time. For a disorienting second, it almost felt like he was returning to his birth planet. But soon, the ship was close enough to see the sandy outline of the continents. The blue wasn’t all ocean. Some of it was trees. He directed the ship towards the landing coordinates just as Petra arrived in the bridge, clutching several barf bags. “Good to see you’ve come prepared, Lacroye,” he commented. “You’re already looking green, and we haven’t even entered the atmosphere yet.” She grumbled something unintelligible in response as she took her place in the copilot’s chair.
one of my editing notes for draft 2 was to make Petra's starsickness worse😆
☆ TAGLISTS. let me know if you want to be added/removed to any of them.

saran's year of writing (2023)
hey y'all! saw a couple posts like this floating around and thought i'd hop on the train, because this year has been WILD for my writing (in a really good way). let's start with the bullet points version and i'll put the details under the cut. here we go:
I JOINED WRITEBLR
shared snippets of my work with other, actual humans!
made friends?!
started (and finished!) draft 2 of Dead Roots, Dark Water
wrote 1 short story for every week in october (that's 5 stories in a month! that's great for me!)
first NaNoWriMo in 10 years (and i finished it!)
drafted and re-drafted The Art of Empty Space
started draft 3 of Dead Roots, Dark Water
details, links to projects, me getting maybe a tad too personal, and those all-important wordcounts under the cut:
I JOINED WRITEBLR
i just realized i only started participating at the beginning of october, but it feels like i've been hanging out with you all the whole year 😅 maybe that means i should cut back a bit? nah...
really though, this year was the year i started taking my writing more seriously (not in a 'gotta get published' kind of way, but in a 'writing makes me happier than anything else and that's enough reason to set aside time and energy for it without feeling hella guilty' kind of way) and seeing you all posting your work and being so positive and encouraging to each other was what helped me get up the nerve to join in. and i can say without a doubt that it's the best choice i've made all year. y'all are such a supportive community and i've never once felt like i was encroaching or didn't belong here (and for me, that's really saying something)
so i guess what i'm getting at is: THANK YOU! i've loved reading your snippets and projects this year, and i'm way more confident in my own than i've ever been 💜 y'all are good peeps
Dead Roots, Dark Water
word count (edited and written): 187,789
that's a lotta words! DRDW is both my longest work wordcount-wise, and the work i've dedicated the most time to... probably ever. and i'm SO happy with it, it's a little concerning (/positive)
DRDW is now on its THIRD draft, and (assuming i don't do a massive re-edit) should be ready to start posting in 2024! *excited screaming* i've never released anything i've written in its entirety (the snippets i've been posting are actually a lot more than i've ever shared before), so this is MASSIVE for me and i'm both excited and terrified! overall, though, it's a very, very good thing
Short Stories
this october, i decided to challenge myself to do several things i don't ever do: write short stories; write them on a timeline; and share them. and i did! i wrote one short story for each week in october, and posted them here. they're far from my best work, and due to the timeline, they never could have been my best, which oddly i think helped make it easier to post them? they were also the first pieces i shared here (or anywhere)! they're not awesome, but i'm proud of them and i'm proud of myself for sharing them
NaNoWriMo and The Art of Empty Space
i've done nano once before, ten years ago. i was in college and had a lot more time then (and a job where i could spend the entire day just writing - i didn't know how good i had it), and even so i remember struggling to reach my word goal. but by the power of writing everything in wingdings so i can't second-guess my word choices, i made it this year! and even though i decided to challenge myself by writing a romance-heavy project (something i've historically avoided because IT'S HARD FOR ME, DAMNIT), i love AES and its characters and that feels fucking awesome.
even though my brain decided to spring a surprise plot restructure on me and now i have to rewrite like half of it. it'll be better for it, though, so it's all good 🥲
What's Next?
my plan for early 2024 is, of course, going to be to work on draft 3 of DRDW with the hope of getting some chapters posted (they are LONG, so i'll probably post to tumblr in chunks and the full, unbroken chapters on Ao3 due to formatting). once that's ready, i'll be able to return my attention to AES and getting draft 1.5 all written up. i've mostly figured out where the plot's going there, so it'll just be writing it up to figure out the gaps. if i'm able to write something for november again next year (which i really hope i will; nano did some great things for AES), it'll probably be one of the other Jak & Daxter fics i have kicking around in my head, because i am Obsessed (and switching it up between working on fanfic and original fic seems to work well for my brain).
i've been not super active here for the last month or so because Real Life Work is kicking my ass, but hopefully that will calm down and i'll be able to do more of what i want: writing wild shit, reading your wild shit, and screaming about it together 💜
good vibes and best wishes to everybody in the new year 🥂

Lost Lune — November Updates
Tumblr media
November has come and gone! While normally in November I'm wrapping stuff up for the year and doing holiday stuff, this year I decided to try my hand at NaNoWriMo, the annual writing competition to write a 50k novel in November (and where the visual novel community got part of the name for NaNoRenO in March).
I'd never tried NaNoWriMo before despite knowing of it for years, but this year I wanted to give it a shot. Writing has never come easy to me and with depression I find it hard to write much at any given time—I usually write by chipping away at my scripts rather than writing in sprints. However, with the motivation from other VN devs also attempting NaNo, I wanted to try it!
So, on November 1st I set out to write...30k words! I have a full time job as well as freelance work so my time (and energy) is pretty limited, so I set my personal goal to be 1k a day for two different projects- Lost Lune and an unannounced script.
And after 30 days....
I hit the goal! I ended up writing about 30,960~ words in November for these two scripts, which is more than I usually write in half a year. I don't have hard numbers for it but I'm also pretty sure this is the most I've ever written in one month. It's much more than I ever thought I could do and I hope the final versions of these scripts will turn out great.
Tumblr media
So where does that leave us with Lost Lune? Well, I ended up writing about 9.5k for the script - about 1/3rd of what the current script length is at now. The project is estimated to be around 50-60k, so it's still got a while to go.
Lost Lune is structured differently from my other visual novels. As the story is about the main character Weiss trying to find their partner Klaus after he goes missing, the VN swaps between present time and past time to show what their relationship was (though we all know what it was).
Tumblr media
I found myself getting lost in the weeds of the story when trying to write it like my other scripts—that is, writing them in order of how the player will see them rather than purely chronologically—so I went back to start writing it chronologically, starting from Weiss meets Klaus. All of my writing in November was for this part, after Weiss and Klaus have met but are still not on perfect terms and growing from that.
I've realized that a core component of how I write romance is based on misconceptions. I feel like most relationships are based off of misconceptions about who the other person is and depending on how these misconceptions get resolved determines how the relationship grows. Whenever we meet someone or hear about someone, we create a mental image of them in our heads. This mental image is never correct—it's based off of assumptions we've made from their appearance, from what we've heard about them, and more. As we get to know the person better, those misconceptions either become corrected or become reinforced. Sometimes we realize immediately that we made false assumptions and the person is not what we assumed. Sometimes we end up thinking worse of a person based on false assumptions before later realizing these were misconceptions.
To me, it's crucial to clear up these misconceptions about each other when writing romance. Weiss and Klaus start off on bad terms, not trusting or even liking each other. A majority of the later sections of the story—which is the beginning of their relationship—is about the two of them having to grow to trust one another and toss aside those false assumptions. I'm being pretty vague here for spoiler reasons as how they met is a major spoiler, but I hope it'll make more sense in the game. Basically, I feel like the core of my romances is two people overcoming their false assumptions of each other to grow closer and gain a better understanding of the other person.
Tumblr media
Sorry I don't have any new visuals this time as all of my progress for Lost Lune this month was for writing, but I hope it was interesting nonetheless!
Next month I'll have more visual progress—I can't wait to show off what I've been working on.

"if i'm having fun it's good and if i'm not having fun it's bad" you're so so so real for this!! anyway sorry i disappeared for like a week so i'm going to ask more questions to make up for it: 1) i know i'm late to the spotify wrapped party but who were your favorite artists this year? are there any songs in particular that stood out to you? this can be either for disney artists or not it's up to you 2) how are you feeling about rise of red coming out next year? i know the plot looks too crazy even for descendants standards, and it helps that it's a brand new creative team, but is there anything specific you're hoping to see from the expanded world? 3) i need to hear your thoughts on zombies 4 because i know there's no way addison will have yet another identity crisis - gcwca secret santa
hi !!!! i hope u had a good week when you disappeared and not like, a terrible one!
to answer your questions, my fave artists were mostly non disney channel :( i think the only disney channel who made it into my top 100 was some sabrina songs :( but! my top five were:
noah kahan (so real)
fall out boy (they counted november this year which i know bc they would NOT have been in my top 5 otherwise. they were my nano soundtrack. tho tbh i think this nano project made me an actual for real fall out boy fan)
taylor swift
dessa
xana
if we could add some i feel like chappell roan should've been in my top five but alas :( also i saw two out of my top five in concert this year :) if we count tickets i bought for next year's concerts i am seeing 4/5 of my top five!! (i also saw chappell roan and she was SOOOOOO good in person). this year turned me into a genuine Concert Girlie (gender neutral) so that's been fun. or it would be, if i didn't have to drive 2 1/2 hours at best to get to one bc i live in the middle of fucking nowhere and no one comes here :(
as for the rise of red: honestly, i'm pretty excited! i'm not allowing myself to feel Bad about it until we get more information. plus, it's giving me the thing i always wanted out of the descendants franchise (qoh kid) so honestly this like, really works for me. like maybe when i watch it later it will be bad? and i'll be upset and disappointed? but. in the meantime, i'm having a great time! still living on the qoh kid high! like, the plot seems wild but personally i'm like. "descendants as a franchise never made sense and i'm getting what i personally wanted out of this franchise from it so i'm having a good time until proven otherwise"
i think a lot of people have strong feelings about it bc of cam, which is totally valid and is their right, but my personal feelings are since the core four aren't coming back, i'm okay with it. disney was never going to let their biggest franchise since hsm lie, yknow? i think this is the best it could've been in that sense of it? idk.
as for zombies 4. truly i have NO idea. honestly the most fun i have ever had with the zombies franchise was watching all three of them with two of my friends whilst we were all stoned, and personally i hope rupaul comes back because i thought it was funny. i'm so sorry if you're a zombies stan but they are not high art to me. they are fun little movies to watch while i get high and then i do not think about them until i want to show someone a silly little dcom franchise and jumpscare them with the presence of rupaul. personally i hope zombies 4 introduces addison's cousin from the human side of the family named allison who is now the one who gets to have identity criseses who is also played by meg donnelly. i hope coach has a new job. i hope his legal name is coach. i hope ej caswell finally gets to leave this discord. i hope they make a reference to the winchesters.

2023 In Review
Hello hello everyone, long time no blog~!
Despite my lack of posting, I've made a lot of progress with not only Forget Me Not but also a couple new projects that I hope to crank out in 2024.
A big thing that happened to me this year was that I went back to school! I've talked about it briefly on other sites, but I've burnt myself out from doing art as a career unfortunately, so I went back to school for administration. At this point my main goal is to have a stable career that lets me do dev and art on the side.
Projects
Tumblr media
The biggest news about my main, large project, The Mysterious Thief Forget Me Not, is that I finally finished the entire script! The total word count for it now is 87,663 words! I knew this was gonna be a big one but didn't realize it would hit almost 90k words.
Tumblr media
I also managed to finalize all the cut-in assets, flat coloured every character sprite, and clean sketched + slapped colours onto every background and CG! We're in the final stretch, and I can safely say that 2024 is the year that you all finally get to meet these wonderful characters of mine.

I also managed to make rough outlines for two short game ideas that came to me this year! Admittedly my first one was originally going to be my entry in Spooktober 2023 but I felt intimidated by it and was also pretty swamped with school work so I set it aside for later.
The second game, however, is a shorter idea that I'd like to try and join this year's NaNoRenO with! It's been five years since I took part in NaNo (the first time was the very early version of Battle Live in 2018) and I've been itching to join again.
2023 also marked the 2nd half of the Battle Live 5th Anniversary Project. I'm really proud of all the drawings I made commemorating the cast and the games, but for now it's time to finally say good night to the OG BatLive games.
2024 Plans
I started Forget Me Not in July 2019, and after just about 5 years of hard work I'll finally be able to release it to all of you! It's been a long time since my last game release (Festival Live in 2019) so I hope you all enjoy the colourful cast I've put my heart into these past few years!
After that, I'll do my absolute damndest to crank out those two short game ideas I drafted. After spending 5 years on a single project I need some short stories to cleanse my writing palette.
In the background, however, I'll also be working on the rough outline of my next larger game (possibly two of them, but not at the same time I promise).
I'll also get back to posting a public dev blog every other month with my progress (while also posting extra ones over on ko-fi for anyone who would like to support me on there).
I hope 2023 was a good year for everyone, and that 2024 ends up even better.
See ya~!
~ Sol

ASKS hmmmmmmmm 5 / 8 / 20 ?
👀👀👀
I just need to say I love that these eye emojis are coming into my house sdkjnfjnkfknjf they're so big and for WHAT tumblr LOL! Saving 5 for the end so I can readmore the snippet!
8. Is there a story idea in your mental vault that you’ve never been brave enough to try writing? Is this the year? Can you tell us about it?
kjndfsnjkdfsknjfsd literally the only things I'm weird about writing are smut ideas okay!!! and they're not even that weird it's me i'm the problem!!!!!!!!! So idk, the LiandrinxReader fic will probably be a nice challenge for me on that front, and who knows, maybe this is the year the Hawkedith light bondage fic sees the light of day. oh actually you know what for a non-smut idea I've always wanted to do a tropey time travel fic! but i think i would make myself insane LOL. maybe this will be the year!!!
20. Any plans to work on original fiction this year?
OHOHOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! It's honestly so hard to choose and prioritize what to work on!!! I have 2 big original ideas, both of which I have rambled at you about extensively LOL. I think I can make a good chunk of progress on the nano nonsense fic this year, since the style is pretty firmly in my wheelhouse and I have a pretty strong idea of the main plot through-line. We'll see how I'm feeling, but I think once I get a few of my lingering fanfic projects done I'll be ready to focus on my original things again! Month-long challenges like nano actually work really well for me when I can manage them, so I might try to do something like that eventually to make some significant progress!
5. Which WIP is first on your list to complete this year? Will you post a snippet?
Again, it's soooooo hard to choose and prioritize!!! Scorched earth is in general my top priority because I just don't want to drag it out too long--before the most recent time my schoolwork beat me to death w a stick I was under the delusion that I could have it almost finished by the new year LOL! But since it's fairly simple in structure and I have it pretty clearly planned out, I mostly write chapters in one or two sittings. Second priority is advancing/finishing ghost of you, since the next chapter is literally almost done, I just got too busy to work on it. But instead I shall offer youuuuu Liandrin x Reader nonsense! It is once again a long snippet because I cannot just be normal.
--
You heard a lot about Liandrin Sedai during your first year or two as a Novice.  There was a rumor, never confirmed but nonetheless ubiquitous, that a Novice had died under Liandrin’s tutelage not long before you had arrived.  As a result, she was no longer permitted to teach Novices.  Furthermore, it was suggested, Novices would do well to avoid her.  Reasons for this varied somewhat, from ‘lest they remind her of her very recent tragedy’ to ‘lest they become the next unwitting targets of her deadly ire.’
You’re sure you never saw her in all that time, though, and eventually you heard the story repeated less and less, only really trotted out when new students arrived to the White Tower.  You learned later that Liandrin had left the Tower for a long while after the incident of legend.  It’s common for sisters of the Red Ajah to take extended leave, and the unfortunate fate of the Novice in question had certainly not impeded her ability to perform the functions for which she is best-suited.
You have also learned since then that for every extended absence, there is a corresponding extended stay in the Tower, particularly for the powerful and influential.  Liandrin is quite popular, if perhaps controversial in some circles, and it has thus been impressed upon her how very much her talents are needed within these walls for the foreseeable future.
Nevertheless, you are nothing short of shocked to see her perched atop the teacher’s desk when you arrive for your afternoon lesson.  You glance out the window, perhaps to catch a glimpse of the dire emergency that must have incapacitated so many Aes Sedai that Liandrin has been deemed a suitable substitute.
Liandrin is technically allowed to teach Accepted students.  Technically.
Liandrin herself looks about as pleased as any of the Accepted.  She pays you no mind as you enter, her piercing gaze fixed on some imagined point on the far wall.  Her arms are folded, her lips are pursed, and it looks like she’s biting the inside of her cheek.  Given her storied reputation, this understandably puts most of the students ill at ease.
“No need to trickle in,” she says, so sharply that you notice a few students flinch.  “You’re all in the right place, I should think.  I am Liandrin Sedai, and I will be overseeing your practice for the afternoon.”
She says all of this as though each word causes her great distress, gaze still fixed somewhere above the students’ heads.
“I am unaccustomed to teaching, and it’s been a long while since I was Accepted, so you will have to forgive me my unfamiliarity,” she continues, but gives absolutely no impression that she is asking forgiveness for anything.  “Adeline Sedai was not generous enough to inform me which weaves you are currently studying.  Would anyone be so kind as to enlighten me?”
The room falls eerily silent.  You cast a surreptitious glance toward Briallyn, who is usually the sort to raise her hand at any opportunity.  She is gazing at Liandrin like she is something inhuman and incomprehensible.
You swallow your nerves and raise your hand.
Liandrin turns her head sharply.  “Yes?”
“Weaving Spirit,” you say, although your voice falters under her exacting gaze.
“Weaving Spirit,” she echoes with a mocking lilt, inclining her head and smiling with false sweetness.  “Could our esteemed little sister perhaps narrow it down, just a bit?”
You feel your cheeks flush hot.  “The basics, I mean,” you stammer.  “Just starting.”
Liandrin scoffs.  “I suppose I should have known better than to expect anything more than that,” she says with a theatrical sigh.  “What was our dear Adeline Sedai having you do, just…” she waves vaguely, “pick at threads of Spirit out of nowhere?  No direction, no purpose?  No wonder it’s taking so long.”
She points at you, and you nearly startle out of your skin.  “Come forward.  Since you’ve been kind enough to volunteer.”
You can hear a low whisper of fear starting up around you as you obey her command, feel the eyes of your fellow Accepted upon you although you keep your head bowed low.  You are shy and unused to this kind of attention.  You can feel your face flushing all the way up to your ears.
Liandrin is perfectly average in stature, yet somehow seems to tower over you through her presence alone.  She ducks her head to catch you eye, and now her subtle smile bears no tinge of mockery.  “Look,” she bids you, gesturing out toward the classroom.
You attempt, quite unsuccessfully, to swallow down your embarrassment.  You look.
“Your classmates are afraid of me,” Liandrin observes, with the kind of neutrality one expects of a particularly uninteresting weather forecast.  “No doubt you’ve all heard stories about me.  Or, should I say, one in particular?”
You glance surreptitiously in Liandrin’s direction.  Her eyes are alight with cruel amusement.  She is enjoying this.  She leans in toward the class, as though to share a secret.  “Let me assure you that what you’ve heard…is absolutely true.”
The whole class visibly recoils, and the frightened whispers culminate in horrified gasps, followed by a deafening silence.
“Look at your classmates,” says Liandrin.  “The same way you would look for threads of fire or water.  Look for their fear.”
A part of you considers that you can see their fear perfectly well without looking very closely at all.  Another part of you is preoccupied with the way Liandrin’s eyes light up watching people recoil from her.  But you know from experience that Liandrin has very little patience, and she will not be pleased if she has to repeat herself.
You tear your eyes away from Liandrin and look, focusing on the class as a whole rather than trying to stare at any one person.  You squint and tilt your head, think of the frightened whispers and all the different versions of Liandrin’s story you have heard repeated over the years.  Some of your classmates are much younger than you, and their precocious talents allowed them to graduate to the rank of Accepted sooner than most.  They must have heard the story of the Novice who died under Liandrin Sedai’s tutelage very recently, and they do not have the benefit of experience to tell them that Liandrin means them no actual harm.
You think you start to see it then, something red and wrong hanging about them, brighter in some places than in others.  On instinct you reach out to pull at the threads.
You are not a talented channeler.  Threads do not respond well or quickly to your beckoning.  But the threads do come to you, slowly, and in this aspect alone, Liandrin is endlessly patient.
“A useful trick, to draw upon strong emotion,” says Liandrin.  Her words are for the benefit of the class, but she speaks quietly, and she is standing close enough to you that her voice makes you shiver.  “Spirit is that which is not strictly tangible, and yet you can feel it, can’t you, when there is a room full to the brim with terror?”
You can see the change in some students then, the ones who understand that this was, at least in part, a play upon their emotions in an unusual effort to educate.  You see the shift not in their faces but in the threads you are attempting to weave, a subtle change in the color and shape as fear gives way to confusion, or brightens into excitement.
You can’t help but wonder what others see, when they look at the color and shape of your own emotions.

writeblr garden tea part -- tea time event!
today is dedicated to sharing the project you'll be working on for camp nano in april! make a wip intro, share your outline and your current progress, post some excerpts, announce your nano goals, and share what you've been doing throughout march to prep!
I am barely making it in time for tea, but here we go!! This will be a pretty informal camp nano intro since I'm still figuring out how exactly I want to do that, but I'm excited to give y'all a preview of my goals!
I'll be working on my wip When Comes the Dawn, a fantasy court intrigue story featuring an aroace lead with an inferiority complex and at risk for developing megalomania, a spiteful deuteragonist trapped in an arranged marriage and is constantly having the worst day of his life, and an imperial family that deals with power struggles via state-sanctioned fratricide.
Though if you want the official summary then it's:
FENICE VI AETIER, a portent of ill omens and the estranged daughter of the Vasilier, ignites a dangerous succession game between her and her half-siblings, where losing means death and winning means an empire. The end of the Hes-Aei war brings with it a chance to prove her worth to her father. The challenge is simple: bring him the head of the deposed king of Hesperia, and Fenice will be granted an Ascension, marking her as a legitimate contender for the throne. But finding the defeated king in his own lands would prove to be harder than Fenice imagined— especially when the remnants of her father’s last war starts rearing its head.
My goals for camp!
Write everyday
Write 15K words
I'm currently halfway through act 1 and have caught up with my in-depth outline. My first draft has already reached 38.2K words, and I'm 77.82% of the way to reaching my first major word count milestone of 50k!
I haven't done much this month to prepare for camp other than trying to keep up a semi-daily writing habit, so I'll pretty much just be pantsing my way through camp next month lol.

🌿 author portrait .
get to know the author behind the blog! repost, do not reblog.
basics .
name/nickname: rook; ryan age: 30 pronouns : he/they years of writing : uh....many. I think I picked up writing either stories or poetry at a very young age, probably early elementary school (so like...age 8-10) probably soon after the concept of stringing together sentences into storytelling made sense to me.
reflection .
why did you pick up writing? it's been so long, i don't think i really remember. i was an avid reader back then though and full of trauma and a drive to escape - so i think it was my way of therapy in a time when i couldn't get it and it spiraled from there.
do you have any writing routines? not set in stone. even when nano comes round and I TRY to have a routine, it doesn't work. I do have little tiny routines when I sit down and I'm really in the mood to do my drafts - I'll get some water/soda, start a playlist based on what I'm writing and dive in. But that's the closest to a routine that I've got.
what's your favorite part about writing? it's an escape. not only for me - but for the people that read it (or so I hope). growing up i've always been an avid supporter for storytelling and how cultures have their different ways of passing down stories and how you so easily get lost in them. but also for me, it's definitely a way to safely and more appropriately sort out my own feelings about certain things going on in my life. it's definitely a type of therapy for sure.
three things you like about your writing. hoo boy uh...
i personally like my character building. kaveh is my first functional canon character in a very long time, but otherwise I'm an oc writer and I personally believe that I fabricate pretty decently outlined backgrounds for my characters that make them delicious for people to interact with. just my personal take anyway askdjlaskj further i'm really in love with my descriptions of a character's actions, like how they go about doing things, particularly the use of their hands. Uh....this is hard kids. I like that it contains a part of myself in it to be honest. Like sometimes people get worried about projecting onto a character and sometimes I do too, but like...I write characters and themes I relate to, and if you see the author inside the muse - particularly my ocs, I think I've done my job.
have you ever given up on writing? Not exactly. Even when I'm not roleplaying, I'm probably writing either bits of my novels or one-shots for other characters. The only time I've ever taken a serious writing break was during a really low, stressful point in my life where I wasn't doing ANYTHING but working and sleeping to be honest. There wasn't any time to do anything else.
But like mercyburned said: just because I take a break or don't have writing mojo doesn't take away the fact that I'm a writer. I always come back. I think to give up on it would require I never come back and I always crawl right back. sldslkd
a question for the next person .
LORI's QUESTION: if you could give advice to someone just beginning their foray into writing, what three things would you tell them?
You're going to come back to something you wrote in a few months or years and you're going to think it sucks - this does not mean you were a bad writer when you wrote it. It simply means you've progressed over time. Better writing does not mean you were bad before.
Not everyone is going to like what you write and that's okay. You don't like everything you read either, and if you say you do you're a liar. Write for the folks who DO enjoy your stuff, don't burn yourself out trying to please everyone. It's not going to work.
You don't need anything fancy to be a writer. A nice laptop, a cool pen or notebook - these are all nice things to have, but you can write on a receipt paper if it's what you have. Your set up does not a writer make.
write a question for the next person to answer. once you've answered it, leave a new question for someone else to answer.
next question: What are your favorite themes to work into your writing?
tagging: @glacialswordsman @sncwlight @fortifice @papilio-anima @dhabibi & you tagged by: stole it from @mercyburned

Monthly Update: February 2024
Hello everyone, happy February!
After how hectic December was, January was a welcome break! I worked a bit across a number of the projects that I have slated for spring, and I got back into writing again; I wrote 26,160 words this month!
The Deepwater Witch (Feb 2024)
I finished a few of the CGs, and most of the remaining CGs have also been sketched.
I also set up the The Deepwater Witch Steam page, if you want to check it out! (I probably won't release it there fully until Next Fest in June, though.)
Karamu Trilogy
I finished the Kanau script and had it beta-read and revised. I also prepped all of the files for VAs and set up a casting call. I also worked on the character designs and did some promo art!
Tumblr media
I also set up the Karamu Steam page, if you're interested... (I'm planning on a simultaneous release on Steam with the release of Hanasu sometime during the summer.)
MINDMINDMIND (Nano 2024)
I worked on the designs for the love interests, Geist and Kalei, and I also fleshed out the outline a LOT. It's looking to be a meaty one. Hopefully I manage to get most of the scripting done in the first couple weeks of Nano.
What am I planning for February?
Currently, I'm shooting for a February 29th release for The Deepwater Witch (Tala's birthday)! (I was originally planning for a late January release, but I needed a bit of a longer break...) Since only CGs remain, I think I should be able to get it done.
However, I might push it back if needed since I'm also developing Kanau in the same time frame, aiming for a March 9th release (Kanau will be released for YanJam, which ends on March 16th). Thank you to everyone who's patient with my nebulous release dates! (As a solo dev it is really hard to plan these things concretely...)
Once March rolls around I will be full speed ahead into the production of MINDMINDMIND for NanoRenO, which is a jam that challenges people to make a VN in a month! It's a short turnaround, so I'll be doing as much pre-production as I can before then.
Thank you to everyone for reading, and I'll see you next month!

WIP Questionnaire
Thanks for the open tag, @verba-writing !
I'll do these for Thief of Hearts since it's my Camp Nano April WIP!
What was the first part of your wip that you created?
So, fun story, I actually came up with the base premise of this idea almost 10 years ago. My freshman year of college (2014-15, *gasp*) my roommate and I binge watched Criminal Minds, and we got through episode 3.02 and my brain apparently decided to take 'what if stealing hearts was a little more metaphorical than this but more literal than the usual meaning', wrote down a title and tagline, then forgot it for the next nine years until I found it while spring cleaning my Google drive.
If your story was a TV show, what would the theme song/intro be?
I want to say "Jar of Hearts" by Christina Perri just because it's too good to pass up how specifically it works, but I also think "Things that Stop You Dreaming" by Passenger really fits the whole world of the story really well, so either of those two.
Who are your favourite characters you've made? Why?
For this story? Definitely Emmett and Rory. Making me choose between them would be like making me choose a favorite child. They're both delightfully flawed, morally grey, and just trying to make it in a city that kind of wants to kill them. Emmett has a knack for making the worst possible decisions without realizing that's what he's doing, Rory is ruthless and probably would have been described as heartless BEFORE Emmett actually stole her heart, and they've just generally been very fun to throw together, force to work on the same side, and watch the sparks (and occasional knife) fly.
What other pieces of media do you think would share a fan base for your story?
I think oddly enough this one is going to appeal to dystopia lovers as much or more than pure fantasy readers. I just read a Korean YA novel in translation, Snowglobe, that basically was an inverted version of the perpetual winter city in TOH, and really felt like that was a fairly close comparative story. Aside from that, I'm not really sure. I like a plethora of weird things that shouldn't go together so I'm not sure at all of what a shared fan base looks like. I'm always cobbling together my projects out of bizarre combinations of inspiration sources and I have zero idea where they will land or what will be a hit with anyone besides me and the few people who get to listen to me bemoan the writing process and read the chaotic early drafts.
What has been your biggest struggle with your wip?
Timing of the plotline. I've been constantly changing when things happen because all the action is crammed into a 48 hour window but ironically that's turned out to be MORE time than I know what to do with given the pace the plot needs to have, so I'm finding ways to flesh things out and frustrate some of the characters' plans so that it's not all over TOO fast.
Are there any animals in your story? Talk about them!
Rory has a pet magical pigeon named Blizzard. He's been affected by the magic that floods the city of Rime, and while he's adapted to endure the extreme cold and see in the perpetual dark, he's nearly flightless because of one wing that is more or less just a warped stub. He's going to be fun to flesh out as a part of the story, and he's sort of Rory's answering service when she's out making a messenger delivery, since people can leave messages they want sent in a little pouch he wears on his back while he's on duty. It would be nearly impossible to have more than one generation of animal in the city without them mutating because of the magic, so most people don't even bother. Small animals that pose minimal risk if their descendants develop magical powers or strange features like foot-long fangs are the only regularly kept animals in Rime, and since most people can't afford to feed themselves and a pet, there's very few domesticated creatures at all.
How do your characters get around? (ex: trains, horses, cars, dragons, etc.)
Mostly on foot, or by ship if they're leaving the city by the port. Keeping large animals in Rime would be costly and that's prohibitive for most people, and the large animals that can manage the winters are mostly the local caribou population, which have been affected by the magic much like Rory's pigeon. Someone might be able to ride them, but it also might end very badly.
What part of your wip are you working on rn?
Drafting. I've gotten the main plot points knocked out, but I'm filling in the gaps and trying to plot a daring rescue right along with my characters, so that's fun. Mostly I'm just following them around with a clipboard and pencil trying to take notes and keep up and getting whiplash from watching them argue about any and everything.
What aspects (tropes, maybe?) of your wip do you think will draw people in?
I'm hoping the worldbuilding is a big draw because that's always the part of a project I go crazy with. I hope people find the idea of a magic-warded permanently winter city where daylight is basically a version of the northern lights appealing enough to be curious. My other big draw is the characters, because I personally love them very much and I hope other people do too. I do have a few fun tropes but a lot of them are skewed slightly to the side, like the kind of chaotic enemies-to-coparents arc and sharing body warmth but also half convinced the other person will kill you when you fall asleep.
What are your hopes for your wip?
Honestly, just that people get to enjoy it and fall in love with the characters the way I did. I would genuinely love to log onto Tumblr and see that someone had made fan art of them, or a moodboard, or to realize a fic category had appeared on AO3 (one of my draft beta readers @nade2308 already wrote a soft cute slice-of-life future fic after bingereading what there was of the draft to see, and I'm genuinely just floored and gleeful about that fact). I'm also sort of lurking like a gremlin ready to watch people lose it over my 'strong female character' choosing to parent a child as the culmination of her arc. Yes, Rory can kill you about ten ways but one of those is to mom you to death. And like the menace I am (and having seen the discourse on Tumblr) I am doing the evil hand rubbing waiting for the response to that one...
No pressure tagging @catwings-writes-things , @nade2308writes, @telltaleclerk, @the-one-and-only-valkyrie, @imbrisvastatio and anyone else who wants to hop on the train for this one!
Questions are:
1. What was the first part of your wip that you created?
2. If your story was a TV show, what would the theme song/intro be?
3. Who are your favourite characters you've made? Why?
4. What other pieces of media do you think would share a fan base for your story?
5. What has been your biggest struggle with your wip?
6. Are there any animals in your story? Talk about them!
7. How do your characters get around? (ex: trains, horses, cars, dragons, etc.)
8. What part of your wip are you working on rn?
9. What aspects (tropes, maybe?) of your wip do you think will draw people in?
10. What are your hopes for your wip?

So after winning at Camp NaNo, I accidentally just...stopped working on UTOPIA, which is the second WIP I've done that for this year. This better not become a habit. Anyway, now that certain other projects are out of the way, I've made myself get back to it and boy oh boy, I've just realized how much I miss Rhys and Jonathan. In honor of the momentous occasion of me getting back to my WIP, here's a snippet XD
"We can't let them win," Rhys said, wiping dirt off her face. She had no idea how far they'd run, but hopefully they would be safe for the next few minutes at least. She turned so she was sitting with her knees pulled up to her chest, panting, and she didn't say anything else until her breathing settled into a more normal rhythm. "We can't let them win," she said again. She recalled the unsettling feeling of static in her ears and eyes and brain, losing her balance but not falling over, a heat settling over her like prickling needles. "So I...I'll give it another go. I'll do the conduit thing again." She lowered her head into her arms and tried to release the tension in her shoulders. She should be terrified. The battery had made her feel like something that wasn't human at all, something infinitely powerful and out of control. She'd felt like a bomb, ready to explode. Even now, she didn't know if she could handle it again. Time had persuaded her it wasn't as bad as her memories, but the fear that lingered in her told her that no, it was worse. "Are you sure?" Jonathan asked. No, of course she wasn't sure. "It's the only chance we have, isn't it?" "Statistically speaking, it's our greatest chance." It was her best chance at surviving and preventing the lich's return. It was the only way to fight her family. And still she wished they could find another way, any other way that didn't involve strange magic and standing up to the people she loved. But every other door had been shut in her face until there was only one left and this was it. A clattering of rocks sent her head shooting up and she blinked against the darkness. Her hand went to her gun but before she could bring it to bear, the shadows coalesced into a familiar shape. Sam lumbered across the ground and dropped the suppression torch at her feet. Then it turned, limping, and retreated several paces away before collapsing in a heap like an exhausted dog. Rhys just watched it and she wondered if Jonathan was really onto something with his theory. What a strange trio they would make. A conduit disowned by her own family, an android out of his time, and a wight with the mind of a person. If she weren't here to witness it herself, she would never have believed it. Without getting up, Rhys reached across the ground and snagged the torch, dragging it into her lap. It was heavy and about two and a half feet long with a fuel canister attached to the underside. There was a strap for putting around her waist to help her steady the weapon. It would certainly be ideal against hordes of wights. There would be no running away from them with this thing. She hefted it into her arms and then offered it to Jonathan. "Wouldn't you rather hold onto it?" Jonathan asked. Rhys looked him in the eye and for the first time, it wasn't just a machine that stared back at her. "I'm new at this. If things go wrong while I'm channeling, someone's gotta hold the wights off and that someone might as well be you."
