#i'm just too nuanced for that site lmao

Ok Ok so I've been thinking this for. quite a while like even before Stolen Heir was released. it's kind of controversial because I might be making mountain out of a molehill but -
I think Jurdan fans border on being disrespectful to Holly Black at times... the problem isn't what one chooses to focus on even though that annoys me too, like it's not like people can control the fact that they focus more/love a character more than the other. But I'm starting to see this especially on Instagram and Goodreads, and I think I have good reason to believe HB is more active on insta and Goodreads is like, the book reviewing site, if there's any place she may look for comments or critique it's that.
and my problem lies with the language used . HB can announce she's working on something and can give hints about it and I've seen soo many people just outright tell her "I don't care about [x] and [y] just give me JURDAN!!" or anything along that vein , there's also "I'm only reading this for Jurdan lol I kind of couldn't care less about []".
It genuinely annoys me a lot !! And I wish I could say to each their own but ykw? At some point it starts to feel like if these two characters aren't involved people don't even try to make an effort to connect with the other characters, the new protagonist, etc. To be honest your page was a breath of fresh air because I don't even see a lot of folks focus on ANYTHING in TFOTA other than this ship.
There's also the irony that so many people pride themselves on loving Jude, their morally grey female rage character, but refuse to discuss Taryn with nuance. Or Vivi, sometimes. It's weird how so many people love Madoc (justified, I like him too) then refuse to think that hey, maybe Taryn's way of coping with faerie is different than Jude and that affects her actions! something something fandom misogyny
The above unrelated paragraph is just to say that a Nicasia focused book is something many people just absolutely will not be able to handle lmao and I so dearly wish Jude and Cardan's 'screentime' is few and far in between just so that it's less palatable. But oh well.
(And after Prisoner's Throne it worries me because with the implication that the Nicasia focused book might have Jude and Cardan POVs I feel like she's catering more to these people now.
If that's how things turn out that would genuinely make me really sad because I didn't pick up her books after reading TCP, I started with Spiderwick Chronicles, then Modern Faerie Tales, and I love the way she creates atmosphere, her worldbuilding, her depiction of the weird and creepy and magical. I especially think that's her strongest suit, more than characterization, so something like this that hinges more on specific characters genuinely turns me off.)
AGREED SO MUCH WITH ALL OF ITTT I too noticed the really dumb people in her comments crapping on everything that isn't a new Jurdan book... Like, the woman was writing books and enjoyed fame 15 years before Jurdan happened. She obviously has a lot to say about her world. Why the hell would you want her to stop developing it and only focus on 2 characters??? I was a big Spiderwick fan as a kid, and when I read TFOTA I had no idea it was by the same writer but I could TELL the vibes were all there. I too think that is her specialty and I'd rather get 10 stories on different characters than 5 on Jurdan.
I want the Undersea book to be about Nicasia and part of it is because I agree, I think most of the fandom would HATE it and it would fry their brains, and I want to see it. It is dumb and petty of me, but it would be sweet vindication for all the clowns screaming into my ear that Taryn is problematic actually in case I didn't notice. Ultimately I know it is a fruitless endeavor. TFOTA has the misfortune of being too good and complicated for its main audience of tiktok book fans, but also too bad and simplified to spread into more general, unspecified fantasy circles where its themes could catch the attention of people who would know how to appreciate them. That means there is only a small portion of fans who both like the books AND have the critical thinking skills to appreciate all the things they do right outside of romance/basic female wish fulfilment.
In the end, judging by TPT, we are gonna have to take the L and accept we bet on the wrong horse and minority does not make the money. But at least we will be there together to make a mountain out of a molehill!

Just wanted to say that I've been a long-time fan of yours, since before PoF, and your analyses were some of the most well-thought out, nuanced and well-researched pieces on the site (my favorites are the playlist analyses they're like my comfort ones lmao). Even tho I've drifted away from the fandom, I still check back in here every now and again to see what's going on. Whilst I love ur series, I do think it's sad you've had to give urself that closure, which is one of my biggest hang-ups with this series. This painful, slow decline where SaSi drags on and on, losing all its momentum & fans and ending with a quiet sizzle rather than a bang as it should, is the worst way to end a series that touched so many people, including me. Tbh, if Thomas is going to use his ever-patient SaSi fans to milk views and money for his other series, he owes it to them to at least finish it properly. He owes his fans a lot of things, and a S2 finale is the main one, you can't milk SaSi for views and not create an episode for 2 years, you can't have your cake and eat it too. Don't want to do it anymore? Cut it, end it, so people can finally move on. The decline of SaSi has been one of the saddest things to witness, but I'm glad you're branching out into other things (tbh kudos for making it this long) and I'll stick around anyway even if ur analyses aren't SaSi because I don't read them for the content, but for the captivating way you write :)
Oh no, compliments! My only weakness!
But seriously, it's beautiful to feel so appreciated and I thank you a lot for that. I am glad you enjoy my analyses so much and it makes me very happy to know they have a good use. If they can help someone feel better, then I will keep writing them until the end of time - no, you can't take back your words now, they will come and be stupidly long because I love to ramble about stuff I like :P
Your words about SaSi are perfectly understandable and I agree with everything you say. It's really a shame that this series is slowly declining and it probably won’t end up like a bang, as it deserved.
Sure, Thomas explained a lot of things and it's now a bit clearer why this happened. However, this doesn't take away from the fact that the organization is pitiful and the lack of communication shouldn't have happened at all, not in a competent team. There are definitely issues and I hope Thomas will work on them as soon as possible, because they can affect his future projects too.
I felt we were going in this direction and I was growing frustrated. So, I did what I do every time there is something I don't like: I try to fix it, even if just for myself. And that's what I did with FSS3. I wanted to see these threads close in a satisfying way, I wanted to see the themes I care about being developed as they deserve. I wanted to give these characters a mature development, because I deeply love them and I deeply love the concept and the possibilities of Sanders Sides.
So, I put my ideas down - with the help of all the people who contributed to the survey. And now, I feel much more satisfied. I know FSS3 isn’t canon, but it’s as close to canon as possible - and, hopefully, will keep being like that for some time too. It’s something I wanted and needed and I’m glad people appreciated it and felt it was good for them too.
And now, I will gladly branch into other stuff. I need to do a bit of a makeover on the blog and expand the “not SaSi” section, first. Then I already have three series I want to talk about and one will be very long, so it might take a lot of time. And then Eurovision will come in May and the Book of Bill will come out in June and maybe I will also talk about the books I love in the future? Or about other series I follow and enjoy? I still don’t know, but be sure I won’t run out of things to talk about. I just wish my ramblings will be worthy of your time and I will keep deserving your appreciation, no matter what I’ll talk about <3

Get to Know Me Meme
Name: Gyro (Enough people called me Gyro-mun back in the day that once, when I was in a group chat with two other people who had the same birth name, I said "fuck it" and just started going by Gyro. It's been ten years lmao.) Pronouns: They/Them Sexuality: Yes Single or Taken: Taken
THREE FACTS
- I've danced in a West End production of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. There was an audience participation number and some of us got pulled up on stage. - I run a D&D game on Saturdays. We started out playing Curse of Strahd, but it's kind of mutated from there. The party pissed off a night hag who is now making two of the party members collect souls for her as reparations, adopted a gate guard, created a power vacuum by killing both major political leaders and started a peasant revolt in the main hub town, "rescued" a flesh golem and left her to her own devices in the forest, may or may not have lit an abbey on fire, melted a pack of werewolves with acid, lost a party member who they are now seeking (the irl player had other commitments lol), went into a Bag of Holding to fight the Bag Man, and are currently investigating a spider cult who are a splinter faction of the canonical demon cult they stopped before the plot could unfold. It's been a wild ride. - I always type "DRAFT" on replies I save for later in case I accidentally post them.
EXPERIENCE
HOW LONG - Since I was around 12-ish? So nearly 18 years.
WHAT PLATFORMS - Neopets, an ancient Nightmare Before Christmas fan site, GaiaOnline, Facebook DMs, DeviantArt, Skype, Tumblr, and Discord. Pretty much just those last two these days.
BEST EXPERIENCE - If I could be sappy for a moment, it was probably meeting my partner (and many friends besides!) through Tumblr RP. But if we want something more specific, I was part of that giant vampire story that @dreamsofalife mentioned in her meme (x); I was the guy whose head got cut off and came back as a robot. Also worth mentioning was a big thread I did with an old pal, where their muse was turned into a swan via Magic Anon, and they decided the anon (now known as Greyfellow) would take his place as his doppelganger and try to take over the kingdom. Shenanigans ensued, a parrot trapped my muse in a pantry and lit the kitchen on fire, the Queen almost had her soul sucked out-- good times.
MUSE TYPE
FEMALE OR MALE - Any and all.
FLUFF, ANGST, OR SMUT - Honestly? Too much fluff or too much angst becomes stale and one-note after a while, and smut's something I tend to do sparingly since it rarely adds to the plot. They're seasonings, not the main dish. I CRAVE VARIETY AND NUANCE, BABY!
PLOT OR MEMES - I'm good with both! Although I admit I default to memes if I'm feeling low energy or if I don't know my partner well.
LONG OR SHORT REPLIES - Either! Sometimes you need multiple paragraphs to set your scene, and other times a simple "Oh, fuck." will suffice. As long as the other person has enough to work with, everything's fair game.
BEST TIME TO WRITE - Honestly I do my best writing either right when I wake up (whatever time that may be) or after dinner, when I get my second wind. Sometimes I get random spurts throughout the day, though.
ARE YOU LIKE YOUR MUSES? - Some of them are aspirational, and some of them are just me in a hat. For the most part, though, I try to find a good balance of how much of myself I allow to slip through. And every once in a while I'll try to write a muse who's nothing like me at all, only to realize we're more alike than I thought.

Is Tumblr usually where the more critical Gorillaz fans vent in? I’ve also seen critical threads on Twitter, but everywhere else seems pretty upbeat, especially in the Gorillaz YouTube comments…though they could just delete comments they don’t like.
I wouldn't know for sure. This is the only social media site I'm relatively active on (though I have a Twitter...I just forget to use it 99% of the time). I imagine you just have to know where to look in other spaces, but idk 🤔 IMO, there has to space for nuanced discussion with criticism, so most contemporary social media spaces don't lend themselves well to that. So, the people doing that might be more likely to be on a forum or on Tumblr. Tbh, part of the reason I don't feel incentivized to use Twitter or Tiktok is because of how they favor short form communication. They're basically constructed in a way to minimize nuance to and maximize emotional (esp angry) reactions. That's never seemed productive to me, and in an age where it feels like places are trying to do away with writing entirely, I feel strongly about staying out of it for the most part, personally. Other critical Gorillaz fans may or may not feel the same way. I assume most of us split our time between other fandoms as well, so we're not going to devote our time making essay upon essay about Gorillaz. In contrast, newer fans might make faster content will post more because everything is still new to them and they're probably more likely to make short form content if they're primarily using newer social media sites. So that might be why you get a different atmosphere on Tumblr vs other sites/apps. That's just my theory though. Maybe you'll uncover where all the critical Gorillaz fans are on other platforms in the time I've taken to answer it haha.
Youtube I have no idea about. I honestly didn't even know there was a Youtube fandom lmao. I prefer reading over watching or listening, so idk if it's something I'll look too far into.

Hi i'm sorry but the 'miner' post reminded me of something and I wanna tell someone.
My bf's ex has a blog that said "minors DNI" and his ex is like 17 years old and I thought that was funny. He's been posting kink stuff for several years as far as I'm aware (so far as starting a side blog for vore) but he's so adamant that minors don't look at his blog. My brother in christ you're the exact demographic that you dont think should look at your blog.
Sorry for bothering u I just think it's terribly funny and I wanted to tell someone lmao
It's just such a new and nuanced problem navigating the reality of minors being healthily sexual vs. minors being sexual publicly on the internet vs. making content that depicts minors having sex vs. adullts being in the same general space and needing to avoid that content and those spaces for both morality and legality's sake. Because no, you as an adult should not have to take down your porn site on the off chance that a kid might see it, but you also shouldn't neglect the precautions one can reasonably take to keep content like porn and hate speech out of kids' spaces.
And that's not even taking into account bad faith actors like genuine predators who use sex-positive and "fuck them kids" and "fiction is not reality" type rhetoric to their advantage, and genuine Puritanical Christo-fascists using rhetoric concerned with protecting minors from such predators in order to spread groomer libel against the queer and LGBT+ community.
A lot of adults, on the internet and irl, just treat minors like pets or possessions of their parents, washing their hands completely of their responsibility to be good to other people including those too young to have agency over their lives, or to have developed any good sense to speak of. It leaves minors vulnerable to sketchy spaces where predators could blend in with their intended victims, normalizing inappropriate and manipulative behavior, and also to children being tokenized as pawns to a pernicious political agenda

I mean...Some tweets are just pure hate without backup arguments but some others are partly true. It's true that outside of the MCU, his movies haven't been critically acclaimed. It's true that they lack quality. It's true that he isn't getting cast like his peers. Those are just facts. And I think the concern can be legitimate when it's coming from a good place, which I've seen quite a lot. There are some stupid haters yes, but others (myself included) truly believe he is a capable actor that is the best thing in the movies he's starring in, but those movies are still bad and that matters. The discourse is over blown on Twitter but it can be relevant to a certain extent
i mostly agree. when it's well-meaning and discussed with nuance, the discourse is actually interesting. if you peruse *real* film critics' posts and/or opinions about Tom, 99 percent of the time you'll see them say he's good and has so much more potential but unfortunately he has yet to attach himself with a project and a director that will fully take advantage of his talents. (i'm of this opinion, too, to be perfectly honest. like i believe he's the most popular actor of his generation globally and has massive appeal but his filmography atm leaves much to be desired. the difference with me though is that i'm not worried because my man is only 26, and Hollywood male actors' careers according to data don't peak until their late 30s lol)
anyway back to the topic: the thing with twitter as an app is that it thrives on 280-character hot takes, which most often than not lacks context and forces the necessary nuance out the window. those takes go viral. people see them. they treat it as truth because they want to be in on "the joke" (because those takes are often presented as jokes). and then tweet it over and over because that's their "in" to this invisible circle (of what, exactly? idek lmao)
that's what makes it exhausting. not the discourse itself, but the way it's being tackled on that site.

why do people lose the ability to see nuance when it comes to ao3. it's a home to insane amounts of creative work that if it were to ever go down permanently would be a massive loss to the internet as a whole. there are also some people on there writing Extremely fucked up things, and you are free to disagree with the site's policy to not take down that content. i do think it's strange for people with spare income that they can donate to things to be donating to ao3 rather than more important causes but... it's their money and you can just block everyone you see doing that if it upsets you that much.
like idk the fact that there is fucked up content on there doesn't make it an evil place that should die lmao. there's horrible shit on Every single platform online. and everyone is very against censorship on tumblr, twt etc so why are people so pro censorship on ao3? they definitely couldn't have real people vetting the uploads there, that would just cost way too much and not always be efficient or accurate, so if they ever did that it would be an algorithm picking up buzzwords and removing accordingly. and obviously that would make mistakes, and again everyone on this site would be angry so it's not really a situation where you can please everyone. like... if you don't like the site why are you going on it? if you don't like the questionable content why are you seeking it out just to complain about it?
idk like I'm obviously pro ao3 existing because it's a great place for creative writing as a whole, not just fanfics. I feel like the people both aggressively for and against it are both weird because it just really doesn't matter enough for people to have entire blogs where they shit on a website and its users, and it definitely doesn't matter enough to have grown adults crying online yelling to donate because they think it's gonna completely die (it's not).

Hey I hope ur okay, all the mess that went down on twitter must've overwhelmed you. I hope you are doing well
Oof I haven’t checked Tumblr until now, but thanks for checking in on me! I’m doing well! :D
For people who don’t know what happened yesterday on Twitter, I got ratio’d/cancelled because I made a tweet about the popular trend of saying “I hate hets”. If you look for it, you can probably find a screenshot of my tweet, but basically I was stating how that joke has spiralled out of control to the point at which it’s socially acceptable to hate and harass a group of people based on their sexuality. And my conclusion to that thought was that people shouldn’t be subjected to hate and harassment based on their sexuality. I notice that a lot of people on the internet advocate for equality, but also turn around and invalidate the opinions of heterosexuals solely based on the fact that they are heterosexuals. And this raised the question: Why is it socially acceptable for me to say “I hate heterosexuals” but not “I hate homosexuals”? Where do POC, people with disabilities, and members of the trans community that are heterosexual fall upon the spectrum of “I hate hets” and “if you’re het, you’re invalid”?
In hindsight, I recognize that my tweet wasn’t worded in the best way, considering that most people interpreted it as me saying that heterosexuals are oppressed and heterophobia exists which is not true. At all. And I think a large part of that is due to the fact that tweets are limited to 280 characters and it’s difficult to bring nuance into a conversation with such a small character limit.
That being said, I think the community on Twitter is very close-minded because anything that someone says that is remotely different from the status quo is immediately shot down and clowned upon. I feel like Twitter users rely solely on their first reaction/instinct when seeing an opinion that differs from theirs, and that usually manifests in quote retweets that say “pee pee poo poo” with a little fancam attached or “you should be embarrassed”. From my short time on Twitter, the best way that I can describe it is “how can I make the snappiest comment in the shortest amount of time so the person that I’m arguing with doesn’t have a chance to make a comeback?” And for someone like me who is not succinct in her replys, this is not an ideal situation.
Looking through all of the quote retweets on my tweet, I realized that nobody had brought up a valid rebuttal of my statement. The closest comment to a valid rebuttal that I received was “you’re cishet”, which isn’t even a true statement. I dislike how Twitter uses race and sexuality as a way to discredit someone’s argument, seeing as that is a textbook example of a logical fallacy. I’ve tried to avoid talking about my sexuality online, mainly because I’m scared of someone I know finding my fandom account and outing me, but seeing as a lot of people were calling me cishet, I didn’t feel like I had any other choice than to come out on the internet as queer. I’m bisexual, and it kind of sucks how this drama was what caused me to share this information.
I think the funniest part about this Twitter drama is that people started going through my profile and looking through my tweets and retweets. Somebody found my retweet of a statement about proshipping, screenshotted it, and used that to discredit my arguments. I fail to see how proshipping is relevant to the “I hate hets” joke but I guess that’s how Twitter works.
I still stand by my stance on proshipping, which is that people shouldn’t harass others over what someone ships. I know that there are people that ship incest and pedophilia, and as much as I hate that it happens, I acknowledge that whatever I say or do will NOT stop someone from shipping what they ship. I know some people use shipping as a coping mechanism for their trauma, and it’s not my place to decide whether or not shipping something that I find distasteful is a healthy coping mechanism for them. I just have to hope that whatever they ship doesn’t manifest into their real, personal lives. And I advocate for curating your fandom experience so you avoid seeing stuff that you don’t want to see. The block button exists for a reason, and I choose to use it liberally.
As for the weirdest part of this Twitter drama, I’d have to say that I found it odd that 20 year olds were clowning on a post made by me, a minor. This isn’t the first time that adults have taken issue with what I’ve said and put words in my mouth, telling me that I support something that I don’t. This was just the first time that it happened in the ZK fandom. And I guess this experience was a learning curve for me. I’m not going to agree with everyone in my own fandom and I should expect people to say negative things about me when they disagree with my opinions. And when this happens, I shouldn’t expect a nuanced and informed debate to occur; I should expect a quick snide remark and then a reaction image as the end of the conversation.
Frankly, I don’t care whether or not these people on Twitter hate me or talk badly about me. I’m the only person who can determine my own self worth, and I’m not about to let some anonymous people on the internet impact the way I see myself. I’m not close with these people and I don’t hold them in high esteem, considering the way they present themselves online. If these people want to spend their time “shaming” a minor and making callout posts, I’m not going to stop them. They can stay mad.

I wanted to saw thank you doing the japanese and english comparison posts on dabi the japanese gives dabi more nuance in the that the wiki and animetropes doesn't whitch is why I'm thankful for your posts for giving dabi more nuance
Thank you!
Yeah, the wiki isn't the best place to go for nuance since it's more about summarizing the story etc. It really should just be an objective website, but all the lov pages are horribly subjective. Guess the wiki writers didn't pay attention in school when it came to writing summaries... anyway -
It's a good source for finding what chapters specific scenes are in, though, so at least there's that.
And I do have to admit that this part on AFO's site is too funny lmao

i dont even understand the proship shit anymore bc ive seen people use it to mean "i'm a proshipper bc im okay with incest/pedophilia/ect and consume it bc i can" but then people who use it like "i'm a proshipper bc i don't support bashing people for their innocent/totally normal ships, but this doesn't include the nasty stuff" and at this point idk if anyone who uses the word knows what they're saying lmao
its literally just because they learned no manipulate their language and use this weird fictional idea of an evil group of oppressors and harassers to play victim in a way paints themselves as the logical ones, but literally anyone whos taken a step outside of their echochambers would realize how this isnt the case and pro-ship is pretty much synonymous with pedo apologist, and i know this because as a kid on this site ppl in those echochambers would pull their shit on me, ive seen what its like first hand. i know all their stupid arguments and the motivations behind them, the whole victim act is just a way to garner sympathy and look like the rational ones even thought theres a huge fucking asterisks over all the seemingly rational stuff theyre saying.
and you know what, i dont consider myself an anti, because the concept of an anti is literally just this caricature they created to further perpetuate this us-vs-them group mentality, they dont even realize it but theyre using fiction to affect reality through this strawman character they invented. its all ironic as fuck. antis dont exist, stop calling yourself an anti, youre just a normal person against pedophilia just like any other person who goes outside and talks to people in places outside of greasy fandom shipping spaces. i dont even like fandom and i dont care much for shipping lol
they also like to paint this portrait of "the puritans" or whatever, claiming that clearly these people are against dark subjects in media all together and lack nuance. but after reading all the replies on my post i can safely say that the pro-shipping fandom brainrot people are the ones that can only think in terms of black and white, not the other way around like they claim, and thats why they can only conceptualize of the people who disagree with them as being this image of an extreme puritan that they made up in their heads.
what i mean by that is that literally every one of them thought that by comparing two things i must obviously be saying that they are a 1:1 because theres no room for nuance in their minds, and they jump to conclusions based on that, and on top of that most of them use this weird example of "oh so obviously bideo game cause violence !!!" when i never once stated that, but their mentality is so all-or-nothing that they cant differentiate between different examples of dark subject matter depicted in media.
i love dark subject matter in media, you do too, i see your wonder egg icon, you see my utenaposting, and the reason we're able to consume those things critically is because we understand the differences between types of depictions, we understand nuance and representation and its importance, and we dont shove things into one of two categories. media isnt a monolith and we need to look at things on a case by case basis, but they just refuse to do that, because if One thing is bad then that must mean All things are bad. and they dont wanna even acknowledge the possibility of that so instead they jump to the opposite extreme of No things are bad. its insane mental gymnastics to justify their weird fanfics lmao. at least like, gross anime nerdboy perverts know theyre deplorable, like guys thats your cousin, you both wank off to underanged anime characters but at least they dont pretend to be progressive about it.

Hi, I want to ask something. While I don't speak or read Chinese, it gets pretty obvious if the official subtitles are subpar, to say the least. For example, I'm able to enjoy SHL just fine because Youku's subs don't make me cringe (even if I have the feeling that some nuances are missed), but any other danmei adaptation subbed by WeTV/Tencent is just.... it's a meme-fest, to put kindly. What's your opinion on fansubs that are done if someone decides to revise/correct the original subtitles?
yeah shan he ling’s subbing team is frickin awesome!! got all them footnotes and shit which is like kudos to them especially cuz like... half of wen kexing’s lines are poems and idioms and shit hahaha i had a hard time translating too
okay it’s true it’s a memefest but also!! it’s hilarious af i mean it’s a good joke to have a round, just not very useful
honestly i’m okay with fansubs, but i think what happened on twitter yesterday with shan he ling was that there was this user (idk if you’re coming to me in reference to this) who basically half-joked that youku should be paying her to do the subs because she’s faster than them etc. and this created a bit of like hoohah in the fandom at least on twitter
1. subtitles are all interpretations right, my subs differ in exact wordings from for example the youku official subs for shan he ling, and that’s because i interpret idioms etc. differently, so i wouldn’t say all subs are good subs (cuz mine are definitely not like good) but all subs are VALID subs in a sense that it gives you a different look at how ppl interpret certain words, and also different sentence structures etc. appeal to different people as well so one translation might sound awkward to one person but alright to another - it’s all subjective
2. the above applies except for the person who started the translation of ‘young master’ as ‘childe’ like jfc
3. if you’re fansubbing
(a) i do think fansubbers should do it from the paid or official versions of the show - same as most reputable translators for novels do, they do pay for jjwxc for example and each translation reminds ppl to support the original version - it’s great to make the subs or translations available to people, but always good to link back to the original and support that, because fansubs do take attention/support away from the original, so i personally believe the fansubber should at the minimum support directly and officially (in this case, pay for you vip youku), and also not advocate or post illegal screencaps from other streaming sites - this isn’t to say fansubbers or ANYONE can’t watch on illegal sites etc. personally, but when you’re sharing content to a larger audience...
(b) you should fansub ‘better’ from the original chinese text directly, not by editing the current ‘terrible’ translations or whatever haha, and no one who doesn’t speak chinese should be doing any revision or correction of the original subs
- but other than that who can say who has the ‘right’ subs etc. right hahaha. subbing, even ‘badly’, takes up a lot of time, and kudos to every person who tries! (although can ppl stop using like ancient latin/greek or obscure english words to replace chinese words LMAO)

job anon back at it again!
Did you watch yesterday's stream? I did-
I woke up, rolled over, made coffee, checked tumblr, and was instantly assaulted by my mutuals by "OH MY GOD TECHNOS STREAMING RIVALSBLR DREAM PRISON BREAKOUT THEYRE GOING TO GET LOCKED IN" and I just. *head in hands* I sat there with my coffee and took 100 psych damage at the end.
Then got instantly assaulted for the next day with "cc!techno is an amazing actor you heathens, shut your nonbelieving face" and i dont even see the critical posts but I agree anyways.
Also the coffee made me super more active and I was about ready to like make analysis and writing but the caffeine dropped off and now I'm like on the coffee high again and I forgot what the main analysis part was-
Tumblr media
LMAO ngl it's the same on this end - i haven't actually seen any posts criticising cc!techno, only people replying to said criticism, but i also try to stay away from critical hotspots if it can be helped
i do think if anyone is disparaging cc!techno's acting, i can only assume (if it's in good faith, anyway) that it's coming from the fact that he seems to be treating serious lore with what appears to be levity. from what i understand of his character tho (which isn't a WHOLE lot to be entirely fair), this seems consistent with his character's confidence in his skills. i don't think it's 'cc!techno isn't treating the lore seriously enough >:(' - i'm thinking it's more 'c!techno knows what he's getting into & likely has a plan, so he's nowhere near c!dream's level of hopelessness and desperation'
BUT AGAIN i don't know too too much about techno (either version) so i could just be talking out of my ass
if you've got thoughts to write tho, go for it! everyone's view is gonna have its own nuance & place to exist within the multitudes of analyses on this site

I understand the nuances of Dorian's life in Dragon Age, my big fear is that Bioware will piggy back off of something pre-established as a "OH see! Lore building!" as a way to hand wave away queer romances that just are. I've been playing the mass effect remaster and there's big backlash on not bringing back cut queer content. The excuse is always something about not wanting to hurt sales and upset parents and it sucks. I'm worried that they'll use pre-established stories that are real and genuine, and use it as an excuse to avoid substantial queer content.
I really, really don't see them doing that, honestly. Dragon Age (and Mass Effect) are both rated M. I've never seen BioWare once claim they have avoided content out of fear of "upsetting parents", because it's not a game they're marketing to children in the first place. In fact— every single entry of Dragon Age, they've been adding to the significance of queer characters, and giving them more agency in the narrative at large.
In DAO, they had (to my knowledge; I've not been in the fandom since ye olde days) some of the first queer representation in gaming I could even think of— and genuine romance, too, not just a gag or off-screen reference of queer people. Now, could you marry Alistair and become King of Ferelden as a m!Cousland? No. Was the subject of sexuality / same sex couples in Thedas really addressed aside from "sometimes they fuck"? No. It was still very bare-bones. But still way more than most games I know at the time.
In DA2, they said "fuck it, everyone's bi", in a way that both took steps forward (no default heterosexuality for characters) as well as steps back in that by just having everyone being bi, there was less of actual queer stories being told as much vs sort of a blanket "playersexual" narrative you'll see people sometimes site (as well as with some massive nasty bi erasure in removing Anders' lines regarding Karl for fHawke, which I won't defend lmao). But it was so nice to go into a game knowing that the character I ended up liking the most I could romance without fear of them being straight-locked.
In DAI, I think they recognized that this was not the ideal form of representation, as we had the first instances of characters being homosexual-locked, as well as dialogues and narratives specifically addressing the characters as such, as well as the first game I've ever played with a canonical transgender character not played for laughs. Now, was everything done perfect? No, not really. I've never played Sera's romance all the way through but seeing videos of her personal quests really... make me think I probably never will. RIP. And the fact that Krem was voiced by a cis woman still makes me :\ pretty hard.
But you know what I see the most with BioWare? They're trying with their representation. Dorian's narrative hit home with me in ways I've never felt in a video game before. Seeing Krem being defended by the Chargers if the Inquisitor makes ignorant remarks about his identity made me smile and feel seen for the first time in gaming. Having the boldness to gay/lesbian-lock characters in a world where heteronormativity is rampant in most of their target market shows signs to me that they're trying to take strides to do more, and better each time— regardless of what's profitable or marketable.
So to be honest, anon— I am not worried about DA4 shying away from queer content, if the trends from the games thus far are anything to go by. BioWare has been attempting to push the envelope and tell more genuine and full-dimensional stories with each entry, and while they might fail and blunder along the way (and be decried online endlessly for it) what matters most to me is that they're trying.
No piece of media is free of flaws, and no doubt we will continue to tell the writers where their writing and representation is problematic. And hopefully, they will continue to listen and try to rectify those issues. But the fact that they're still doing their damned hardest to try even after being chewed out by fandom places (for not getting the representation right) and conservative gamers (for daring to put the "queer agenda" in their game) gives me hope that they are going to continue to try.
EDIT: I forgot to mention that I haven’t played any Mass Effect games so I can’t put proper input in on that aspect of things lol. But when it comes to most remasters, I can’t say I’m surprised that they don’t put back in cut content, not because it’s controversial— but because it’s extra time, effort, and thus money. New voice lines, play testing new / variants on quests, etc etc. I doubt the choice to not put in cut queer content was anything other than based on money. If it was free/cheap to do, I don’t see why they wouldn’t slap it on there and market “ALL NEW!! Previously Unseen Content!” for EZ marketing. If BioWare was truly afraid of pissing off people for promoting LGBT content— I think that ship has already sailed with their library of other games with visible queer content.

What's recovery rhetoric? I think I have a basic understanding of it, but I feel like I'm missing the nuance of it, if that makes sense?
Ok I’ve learned my lesson, I’m typing this up in wordpad too and also I’m lazy so I’m cribbing from previous posts  (which I will link to in case anyone wants some further reading). Also it might not be necessary for u but I’m gonna cover basics in this in case any newer followers are curious.
So, SUPER short version, “recovery rhetoric” is the eugenics-lite way that recovery is discussed and pushed on mentally ill/mad/neurodiverse people. Recovery rhetoric is essentially the intra-community version of neurotypical ableism and their ultimate goal of eradicating neurodivergency. It’s an ultimately harmful attempt to try and assimilate into neurotypical society. Now I don’t think those that perpetuate it are intentionally malicious, I completely understand the desire to get better and be “normal”, but nonetheless the impact is ultimately harmful.
Things that are typical of recovery rhetoric:
Constantly changing redefinitions of “recovery”. Recovery means the problem is gone, which for most people is not possible, ever. Most people engaging in recovery rhetoric recognise this but rather than give up on recovery, which is demanded of all of us by ableist society, they attempt to redefine it, which creates a situation of one side telling a vulnerable person that “recovery is possible!”, which sets them up for the trauma of constant and inevitable failure for not living up to The Actual Definition Of Recovery, which will usually be internalised as a personal failing.
The insistence that their is One Way That Recovery Looks. To make this easier to discuss here I’m going to define this as “improvement” rather than “recovery”, but recovery rhetoric ignores the variety of people and their situations and experiences. The standard for improvement tends to be go to therapy, take your meds, “healthy” (read: respectable by ableist standards) coping mechanisms only etc etc which is inherently harmful for prioritising respectability over what is actually helpful for an individual.
One example would be the earlier discussion on my blog regarding addiction, the recovery rhetoric approach would frame replacement and even addiction itself as “unhealthy” coping mechanisms, therefore things that should be eradicated immediately regardless of the individuals situation. Their is no consideration for those who would be worse off in their current situations without their “bad” ways of coping. No consideration for those that respond differently to different things (insulting myself is FUN it doesn’t actually damage me, the same is true of others, please leave us be). Their is no consideration of the fact that “healthy” is subjective. Their is no consideration of the fact that for some “healthy” is UNACHIEVABLE. Their is no consideration of those who would be harmed by “respectable” methods of improvement, such as therapy or meds (abuse within mental health fields exists and is rampant). And this tends to breed a lack of compassion for those in worse situations than those who can just drink a glass of water and take their meds to feel better. It’s respectability or you aren’t trying hard enough and you just want to be ill. Because recognising that personal improvement is actually antithetical to the expectations of ableist society, those entrenched in recovery rhetoric will tear down anyone who is a threat to their viewpoint so they can hold on to the hope they will be “normal”.
(Also, I’ve just realised this parallels the CBT approach: removing a negative behavior results in the problem it is a response to being solved. Which is… not how things work but given how CBT has been pushed lately above all other forms of treatment due to low costs, to the point where some other treatments have been cut away completely, I’m… much less suprised by this aspect of recovery rhetoric. I’m copywriting this insight /j)
The idea that to be neurotypical and sane is the default, what we should all aim to be, and that existence outside of that is a deviation to be fixed no matter the cost. By God You Better Be A Productive Cog In The Machinery Of Capitalism Or You Have Failed. This links in a little with the previous point, in that what is considered “healthy” and “recovered” doesn’t always correlate with what is good for someone.
The pathologising of Every Damn Thing Even If It Is Harmless. Not texting back is because you are traumatised. Don’t do toooo much self care because that’s indulgence. Don’t trust people? It’s because you’re crazy, not because people have shown you can’t trust them. I could go on.
Coercive loss of autonomy through intra-community pressure. You are not allowed to be ok with being ill or mad. You are not allowed to disagree with professionals, you must submit to them and seek treatment from them. Recovery is not optional. Don’t you dare suggest there is nothing actually wrong with you. And of course listen to some random blogger who knows nothing about your life, they just want the best for you, you aren’t anti-recovery, are you?
The denial of outside factors in mental illness and madness. If you have a problem, it’s because of you, your brain, you have to fix it. Your recovery is down to you. Homeless? Abused? Can’t get medical treatment? RECOVER ANYWAY.
It leaves no space for those who have been harmed by recovery attempts and the mental health field. Certainly no space for those that have been killed by them.
(can u tell I’m getting lazy towards the end here? My hands hurt, sorry)
Recovery rhetoric may seem quite lovely on the surface, but the end result is a few uwu recovery drink-water-take-your-meds blogs feeling all morally superior because it’s easier for them, and a culture of attacking anyone who has life a bit harder.

Why do You dislike Scott Snyder? I mean I have my reasons.. like a lot of the Court of Owls stuff, his convoluted plots, making Dick a punching bag for the broody bats, horrible at writing the family as a family he literally wrote Death of the Family I mean....*kill bill sirens* ... Also the ''son of a Damian'' line from Black Mirror etc. But I'm curious if you have more reasons since I'm pretty new and I'm told that he likes Dick and wanted to write Dick focused books and I don't.. buy it.
LOL yeah, all of that for sure, and I mean.....tbh, I don’t pay enough attention to his interviews and stuff to even be aware that he’s said that about liking Dick and wanting to write Dick-centric books, but I’m with you on that....not necessarily meaning anything.
God knows I’ve lost track of how many fic writers in this fandom swear up and down they love Dick Grayson and yet I avoid their stories with extreme energy, lmao, because I’ve read enough of their takes on DG that I’m like hmmm, yeah, we are not the same, lol. I mean, there’s a certain couple fic writers who just are like....DETERMINED to mention Danny Chase every single time I make a post about why I’m annoyed by the focus on Dick’s allegedly infamous temper. And its always the exact same song on repeat, they’re like “OH-HO, so apparently you don’t remember the time Dick choked Danny, a literal CHILD, just because Danny had the nerve to tell him Jason died, cuz like, I do, and it was AWFUL and Danny could have died TOO y’know, that’s how mad Dick was.”
And then I just kinda stare at these words that apparently mean things, and enter a fugue state where an unknown amount of time passes and by the end of it I feel 80 million epochs older, and its like....no, I absolutely do remember that time when Dick grabbed Danny by the shirt and yelled in his face because he just found out his brother died and Danny said “what’s the big deal, its not like it doesn’t happen all the time” and this was absolutely not an awesome and fun scene for anyone, no matter how understandable Dick’s upset was at the time. BUT, I also happen to remember, since y’know, it was in that literal exact same issue, how then Dick went to see Bruce, and due to BRUCE’S upset about Jason’s death, Bruce literally punched his remaining son to the ground, screams about how it was all Dick’s fault, and kicks him out of the house Dick grew up in and tells him to leave his keys with Alfred.
And its like......the very same people who LOVE to throw around references to Danny Chase in order to puff up the claims about Dick Grayson being volatile and extreme and having a Dangerous Temper like, flat out REFUSE to ever even ACKNOWLEDGE that scene with Dick and Bruce, from the literal exact same issue, because they at the same time claim that THIS was bad writing and OOC and Bruce would never.....but apparently, the writing from ten pages before it was just fine and completely accurate and Dick absolutely would not only ever, he would always, and thus Dick’s Legendary Dangerous Temper is canon and its why Dick can’t have nice things or people being nice to him in these writers’ stories, its too Dangerous, he might get mad I guess.
And each time this comes up on this site, I’m always like....hey, science side of tumblr, is it possible that insisting on vilifying Dick for his reaction to someone in the wake of Jason’s death whilst simultaneously refusing to acknowledge the scene of Bruce’s reaction to Dick is canon or in-character despite existing in the exact same issue and written by the exact same writer.....like....could this be one of those double standards I’m always going on about? And isn’t it in fact reasonable to question just how much or how little someone actually means it when they say they love a character but want that character flogged in the middle of the town square for a Bad Reaction to something that also prompted a Bad Reaction from another character but this character, they’ll like, throw themselves in front of a moving train if it keeps someone from daring to even suggest that THEIR reaction was canon and in-character and might potentially say something damning about their temper or behavior with friends or family?
*heaves endless sigh of endlessness*
Sorry, that example was right there on the tip of my brain today because like....I literally just saw another post around this oft-deceased and resurrected and killed to death again dead horse like, five minutes ago and then came to dip into my ask box for the first time today and it was like.....destiny. Assuming destiny has some free time to kill and nothing better to do, which, I mean, hey, everyone’s allowed a hobby is all I’m saying.
LOL sooooooooooo, ANYWHO, its just like.....ugh, I’m so over being expected to take at face value any writers, whether professional or fan, saying “oh but I love this character or that character, and due to that being my preface to everything else I say or do in regards to this character, you have zero basis for claiming that you do not like or trust my depiction of this character because ummm, read much? I literally JUST said, I love them though? Wow. Insert scoffs of incredulity here, I don’t even know how to talk to someone who thinks I don’t like a character I claimed I like just because literally everything else I say or do about them paints an opposing picture to the contrary.”
LMAO. Sorry. Had to get that off my chest. But yeah, like, I think EVERY canon Batfam writer has made a similar claim in recent years about pretty much every Batfam character, and at a certain point it starts to be like....okay, if all of you are telling the truth here, shouldn’t we see more canon evidence of like....these characters that you’re writing, like....actually even LIKING each other? At what point are we allowed to question the legitimacy of you saying oh I totes love this character, that’s why I write their family as abusing them, that’s just love, baby, that’s what it looks like.
Personally, I’d like to see more of us at least using qualifiers? I mean, I do say I don’t hate Tim, or Bruce, or any of these characters, but I get how people could be dubious about that and be all, umm, you rant about them a lot, because like...yeah. Fair. That’s a valid critique. SO its a lot more accurate for me to be like, I love 90s Tim and I just have become increasingly less enchanted with the character over the past twenty years since then, enough so that my knee-jerk reactionism to people bashing Dick’s character BECAUSE of what Dick did or didn’t do to Tim in their eyes, is like.....disinclined to view the situation or his character these days through 90s-Tim rose-colored glasses.
Similarly, I truly don’t hate Bruce, at least not when he’s not being written as physically and emotionally abusive and/or just plain neglectful, BUT I absolutely despise the abuse apologism rampant in most fandoms, but particularly in this one, where people will make like Cirque-de-Soilei contortionists in order to prove that Bruce beating this kid or that kid isn’t actually abuse, its cuz they made him do it....rather than people just being like, no, that’s abuse right there on the page and I don’t stand for it or stan that Batman, so I have zero desire to defend that scene or his actions there from his perspective, and am totally fine with taking a seat when someone speaks up about how much they hate what Bruce did to his kid there in that scene and how it affects their read of the characters as a whole.
Its like....that too, is a thing you can do, instead of just.....trying to explain why Bruce isn’t abusive see, because what happened there wasn’t actually abuse, since it couldn’t have been, because Bruce isn’t abusive, see, he would Never.
And yet so rarely do people actually do that, and we have people literally championing themselves as members of the Good Dad Bruce Protection Squad when the frank reality is there CAN BE NO GUARANTEE of him ever and always being a Good Dad, when like....his characterization, ultimately, is dependent on how he’s written by canon writers who ARE NOT US. Which makes that desire to see him as just a good dad and nothing but a good dad always, like....not quite as understandable as it otherwise might be, and instead just kinda....willful, an admission that a lot of fans in this fandom will just flat out ignore all evidence to the contrary of this stated claim about what Bruce inherently IS, when inherently all he is happens to be a character who manifests whatever those in creative control of him choose to manifest via him. Like.....there are ways to go about that kinda thing, its just....that isn’t it. Something like “Proud member of the Keep Bruce Wayne a Good Dad Squad’ or something along those lines? I’d have ZERO issue with, because that’s ACTIONABLE, not WILLFUL. It posits not that Bruce simply IS this way and there’s no ifs, ands or buts about it, but rather that just because he isn’t this way in some instances, that doesn’t mean we have to agree with it or condone that interpretation of him, y’know?
But people are like....unwilling to make that distinction or hold that nuance a lot of the times, so my dislike of Bruce as he’s written in certain ways or by certain writers like....grows and evolves and mutates into Godzilla rampaging through downtown New York, until its understandable that people reading my blog intermittently and who don’t follow everything I say on the subject are like.....”Bold of you to claim you like lizards in this one post when I have here nine other posts where you’re just like, FEAR the murderous monster-lizard destroying New York for it is Dangerous and Fearsome. Cuz one of these things is not like the others, bud.”
*Shrugs* Anyway, all of that’s just my allergy to Staying on Topic, so make of it what you will, hopefully you get what I mean though even if you don’t have like, the requisite Kalen-Garbled-Nonsense Secret Decoder Ring. Back to Snyder though....yeah, he can claim he likes Dick all he wants, because y’know what, Tynion says the same thing and its been well established by moi that my fondest wish for Tynion is that he be kept far, far away from Dick’s character whenever possible. And I’m pretty sure Tom King claims he loves all these characters and we’re all like HAHAHHAHA and we know Lobdell insists he loves Jason Todd and its like wow how curious then that hardly any other Jason Todd stans love you.
The ironic thing about my random bouts of ugh Snyder in a lot of posts however, is that......tbh, its not even his depiction of Dick that makes me dislike him as much as I do? LMAO. I mean, I’m not a fan of it personally, for a lot of the reasons you mentioned, but I don’t like a lot most canon writers’ depiction of Dick these days and haven’t for years. The thing I really dislike Snyder for, personally, is his depiction of Damian.
Its just.....its very Not Good, a lot of the time. Oh, there are moments here and there, but you could claim that for any writer, really, but for the most part, like.....ooof, I haven’t read Snyder’s work on Damian recently enough to really cite specific moments off the top of my head, because I’ve been avoiding anywhere he’s writing Damian for awhile now BECAUSE of it, but....a LOT of the ‘demon brat’ shit in regards to Damian comes from Snyder’s work, and like, I’m always kinda like “hey is making Demon anything the go-to nickname for a kid of Arab descent who is already compared to a terrorist enough as it is like....really the best we can do” to begin with, and Snyder absolutely 100% does not help with that.
To be fair, its not remotely like its all just on him, the stuff that has had a lot of us complaining for years about the blood son crap and the insistence on acting like there’s this stark divide between Bruce and Damian and the rest of the Bat siblings, I mean, see: Tom King again, its just. Ugh, okay, Im gonna have to get back to this in the near future with actually sourced gripes about why I think Snyder’s Damian in particular is absolute crap and could he just not, though. Because it really is my chief complaint with him, like I was never gonna be a fan of his in general just because he’s someone who's like DARK MULTIVERSE BATMAN FUCK YEAH and I’m someone who’s like DARK MULTIVERSE BATMAN UGH FUCK WHY.....lol....BUT like I mention in other posts.....its not like he’s incapable of doing decent stuff or that he’s never written anything I like, because ironically, he IS the biggest canon backer of Duke Thomas and pretty much single-handedly responsible for Duke retaining as much of a presence as he has in recent years instead of just appearing and blipping out of existence like a one-hit wonder, and that can’t be overlooked or considered inconsequential.
That just also kinda makes it all the more annoying that his Damian is so very.....objectionable to me, but yeah. Anyway, that’s the curious case of my very mixed feelings on Scott Snyder, with a side dish of generalized “lol oh, so you do in fact love this character? Well magically all my criticisms of your take on them have now disappeared!”
