Subscription Box Comparison - 2023

This year, for my annual book box comparison (it’s happened two years in a row, that makes it annual) I’m comparing five subscription boxes: FairyLoot, OwlCrate, Illumicrate, Rainbow Crate, and A Year of Sanderson. I also received two book-only shipments, and a bonus box to share with you, which isn’t a book subscription: Witch Casket!

Let’s start with some of the boxes I didn’t include this year. One of the companies I featured last year (Book Box Club) has gone out of business - this is something I predicted, because they weren’t any good. Other boxes I’m not including: The Bookish Box - I think this box looks really good, and I’d love to try it, but they don’t ship to the UK. I could use a third party courier, but it would be very expensive. Fox & Wit - this only comes with one item, so I’m not that invested in trying it, I prefer full boxes. And their website is really quite terribly designed - it’s difficult to navigate, and there never seems to be anything available on their UK site. LitJoy - I’ve tried the occasional one-off purchase from LitJoy, and I can’t deny their quality is amazing. But they persist in clinging to their infatuation to H*rryP*tt*r, which makes me very uncomfortable. They say that they support trans rights, and don’t condone the author’s actions, but their worship of the series says otherwise. In this case, actions really do speak louder than words. But even if they sorted that out - their products are just too expensive. Yes, they’re good quality, but they are incredibly overpriced. FaeCrate - I will never, never order from FaeCrate again. I ordered one box - it was over three months late to arrive, which is apparently very common, and their customer service was not just bad, but they were genuinely rude. When the box finally did arrive, it was just absolute tat, and the entire lot went in the bin. Even the book was uncustomised. And on top of that, there was an item that they’d not included, and a note saying that this item would be sent on to me later. I never heard from them again.

FairyLoot Theme: Eternal Featured Book: Seven Faceless Saints - M.K. Lobb Price (before shipping): £27.50 / $35.90 Total number of items: 4 Items I actually liked: 3 Book Customisation Rating: 12/20 Overall: This is usually one of my favourite boxes - but this month's was quite disappointing. FairyLoot is normally really good, but I have seen a drop in quality recently.

OwlCrate Theme: Let's Rewrite History Featured Book: Midnight Strikes - Zeba Shahnaz Price (before shipping): £29.08 / $35.99 Total number of items: 4 Items I actually liked: 3 Book Customisation Rating: 08/20 Overall: This box has improved massively since my last comparison, last year I was considering dropping this box, but now they're consistently good!

Illumicrate Theme: Live Like Legends Featured Book: Lies We Sing to the Sea - Sarah Underwood Price (before shipping): £27.00 / $35.00 Total number of items: 4 Items I actually liked: 3 Book Customisation Rating: 13/20 Overall: I switched to book-only for half the year, but I went back to the full box as their item quality improved. They're still hit and miss, but vastly improved on last year.

Rainbow Crate Theme: Protect Your Own Featured Books: Ravensong - Cayla Fay and I am Not Your Chosen One - Evelyn Benvie Price (before shipping): £37.95 / $46.97 Total number of items: 2 Items I actually liked: 0 Book #1 Rating: 01/20 Book #2 Rating: 10/20 Overall: This is the first time I'm trying this box, and it'll be the last. Although you get two books, only one is properly customised. And there are only two items, neither of which were much good.

A Year of Sanderson Theme: Cytoverse Featured Book: none Price (before shipping): £32.32 / $40.00 Total number of items: 3 Items I actually liked: 1 Book Customisation Rating: N/A Overall: This one-off Yearly subscription was a complete rip off, and it's made me lose faith in one of my favourite authors. This box comes with either a book or box, and the quality is vastly lacking. It's hugely overpriced, and I've been nothing but disappointed.

This year there are also two upcoming subscriptions that I’m eager to try. There’s a sucker born every minute and, apparently, that sucker is me. One is the new OwlCrate Adult subscription that they’re currently working on. The shipping to the UK makes OwlCrate expensive for me, but I'll definitely try getting both boxes for a while, if I can afford it. The appeal of this is that it's a full box, unlike the FairyLoot Adult subscription, which is book-only. The other is the new Illumicrate Horror subscription. I’m keen to try something other than a Fantasy book subscription, and usually the only options are Romance or Spice, neither of which I’m interested in. This is book only, which is disappointing, but it’s a quarterly subscription, which is more manageable!

The two book-only options I received this month are FairyLoot Adult, and a three-month delayed Sanderson book from January.

FairyLoot Adult Theme: Rotten Opulence Featured Book: The Foxglove King - Hannah Whitten Price (before shipping): £20.00 / $28.00 Book Customisation Rating: 13/20 Overall: I've started skipping months for this subscription, and will probably end up dropping it soon. The books are nice, but they come faster than I can read them, and it doesn't seem as good value without the items, even though it's cheaper.

A Year of Sanderson Theme: Secret Project #1 Featured Book: Tress of the Emerald Sea - Brandon Sanderson Price (before shipping): £32.32 / $40.00 Book Customisation Rating: 03/20 Overall: I've made my thoughts quite clear on the overpricing of this subscription. For this month, we only received a book with no items. It was advertised as a "premium" hardback, which it absolutely is not. It's nice, but not worth the amount they've charged.

The last box I'm going to share isn't a book subscription at all! But honestly, it's so thoughtfully put together, and such good value for money, that I had to include it in this comparison post!

The box is "Witch Casket", and as the title suggests, it's a witch-themed subscription box. I've tried boxes with similar themes before, and always been disappointed, but this one blew me away so much that I've decided to make it a regular subscription!

It had an incredible twelve items, all of them exclusives, rather than the wholesale purchase stuff I've received in previous witchy boxes. You often get spell ingredients, candles, crystals, enamel pins, tea blends, incense. Such brilliant value for money - if this also included a book, it would be a perfect box!

There are humongous numbers of dead who tried attacking our Thunderdome in Canada they went up over the wall as we detailed the nights in White satin du, and they managed to all die trying to get near it and they were killed by a very large beem. And it was not red he decided to try and build one next to it and they haven't done that yet and that's why it happens there's only try and fire it up to fire down and deflect reflect it and hit the big device and fool them and save their buildings fire up too and we're not easily fooled the Midwest is empty and completely upon hearing this and they're going there Utah's Ghost Town there is tons and tons of people heading up there it is a multi multi non-illionaire attack meaning there are so many people going that you can't count them it's around 500 MNNNNNNNNNNNNNN NNN people and that's 18 Ns if so many people it's disgusting and they're getting attacked and it shows that we need other thunder dome up and we need it up right away the Midwest Thunderdome is being worked on and it's nowhere near getting ready no it's close and he needs it now this would help a lot it's going to suck them in like the biggest hoover you ever seen you got 18 ends first night out I am counting and I said wow that's a lot I've never heard of that I never heard of it either it's more people in time like for the past three days UK thing. So I went in there and I started building a man and tons of people are now and your guys are you're cadre that's better they say that too even Hera has sent a huge Force and you're down there was a massive one lifting and holding and placing huge it's going to be ready shortly for removal give the green light for the Sahara and South Africa whenever she's ready and she says now but it's not dark now we will be shortly and around 11:00 p.m. tonight the Thunderdome will be ready but you say you like to let it cure instead of jostling it around and it takes about half a day so maybe tomorrow night it was time to do a lot of work to it and a lot of prep above it which is what we have to do removing bunkers takes a lot of weight off and also we get a lot of ordinance and concrete for materials and we're going to need it immediately and we can stockpile it and half of it now so we can't on the ring we can that's true I won't be enough but you can't stop by it down there and he says it's kind of really not a good thing it's not it'd be a mess so we're going to prep it on the top and around it and there's tons of work to do it'll take all night and we're going to do it so it's ready for tomorrow night prepping all the equipment that's going to go in there.

They're a huge amount of suckers here I think we're just going to lay down and go away cuz they're stupid they're preparing the shatteredome in Brazil shortly down there we can go gangbusters it's hardly anything around cuz we've all got cleared out and that little morons since on top of it for some reason they think their kings of everything after tomorrow it gets rid of him and he was messing up to the housing situation all the time and Jenna is going to be gone too and we're reading the report that she can't handle it and comes out and starts croken here. Tons of times she called this is a big huge lie she's died a whole bunch of times still after him and bothers him and bothers Sebastian and bothers Sebastian's wife has a huge a****** about it the small they like to do stuff to her it's really tough so here's what's going on she's coming from Utah is it evacuated there's no one there and she's screaming about it to people saying you killed everyone they say no they left and went up there and she says where they go out there for and he went up there because the shattered on emptied they're fighting over it or something she can't figure it out and she's blaming him so going after her for what she's saying it's very insulting and mean and also it's none of her business and what she's doing is telling all sorts of lies about him as well that people don't know what he's doing at all so going after her and we put APB owner and an idiot brother who ruined a perfect thing again he's a dead man I'll put it once and bounties on them, it's big money if any of you want any money you hit them and you just tell us where they are and you don't go after us and we send you tons of money or stuff but a huge companies and we can give you almost anything you want for it that is equivalent to the money which is giant money. Who placed them on them now just those two there are several others on the list and they're online an out version of the FBI.

Tons of people have seen it before and they're looking it up now and see that it's huge money just for a hit or even a ding so they're going around doing it to them because there's a ton of them it's listed and we don't like them puking and spewing at us every single comment.

We have hundreds of hits on people here people don't even know it they're so dumb and screwing around with them all day long and putting hits on them all day.

Right now there doesn't seem to be a letter from Utah which is a lie there's still 10 out there and Jen is letter is stuck and is real and it's her fault and it's in New York City and she refuses to go there to get it going and we can't seem to get it out of there and he says what would be blocking it and a lot of people say that it's her idiot brother because he is blocking it and sitting on it so she's sending in snipers and see who it is you're an idiot says Ellie is an idiot he's kind of used to it cuz she's always wrong in the house I was blaming him said no you're wrong just walked away sometimes she'd figure it out. Now she says this you're the one who effed up that thing out there the apartment and it's you who keeps on screwing around with him this is jerking ass up everything going on it's absolutely true he's a freaking weird homo and he's ruining everybody's plan including his own and yes practically no clue what he's doing shortly he's going to go out and up and it's not even going to be after JC and Mary's AI is going to drop someone else's and they're going to go to Titan because his is going to be up and around Titan it's absolutely true sticks pretty close all of a sudden people are getting this idea that these people are stupid it's really a faint and it's not that stupid but it is relatively dumb. A huge Force is heading towards his house and it's my Mac Daddy and he's saying this won't happen and he's saying I'm coming after you you little s*** and he's saying it's probably Trump then I'm coming after and he's nearby and he said you should probably not come after Trump or me with a giant Force you have to go after him with pizza delivery people repairman and regular folks and start to figure it out he wants to do that and Tommy should do it too because if you do it one at a time you're going to I'll try and kidnap me cuz you're like smeagol from Lord of the rings anything I learned it from him and I learned from a few people in westborough empire was Brian who's being a real stinker and Jen is going after because he's a hog and you might want to take a look at it cuz I don't know who it is and she's looking in the post office and the examining people and the people are checking and Mac is checking Billy and we're looking and they say it looks like your friend Gary Debussy the homo and he's a massive homo so people are now attacking him at the USPS because they don't want to stop the letter his plan is no savvy at all is going to grab stuff like a chimpanzee so Jenna is please as happy as it's not her brother and they're having a war anyways but it's over Utah and he doesn't know why he would move there because they don't make anything like chocolate or honey or anything like that it's just a bunch of Mormons or something. Well this warming cooking and he says I can get a pot pie anywhere mom did Mormon cooking it workshop it's not the greatest sorry Mom I know you're back and you were here at the same time she says it's a God trick and he says Goddess I think is the word Arn says slow down a little bit.

Okay so they're back we welcome them back we can't go there so sending things to the queen for them he says don't send food someone will try and contaminate so sending things are nice to help them and money and all sorts of stuff and she's going to try and get it and having a little trouble the post office.

Max says this is crap that's real that fleet is huge the ships are huge he's been doing this whole time and we can't stand him this little dicky pod came up with a force that took over the whole place he's trying to be very annoying

Huge fleets of ships are now looking up there from all different sides. He's the number one suspect now and it started to hear this that he's been sitting up there and hiding and he's been actively flying around while everyone else is not so he's a suspect and he's the one who was holding the contracts and influence jenna to do it.
