Lie to Me Theory: Music Video
Tumblr media
Start Here: Lie to Me Theory: Timeline
There is no way to beat around this part of theory. It must be approached directly and bravely. All of what has happened in the timeline to here has left people distracted. So no one would be looking for the ultimate truth in a video about lying. Luke is singing. He addresses four different people. Everyone is represented by cars: three different parties. Two different agendas for being in relationships. All stemming from one reason.
First we need to talk about the two truly significant elements of the Lie to Me Music Video: the lyrics and the center car.
What do we mean by lyrics? The ones available on AZlyrics or Genius? The ones they’re singing? Not this time.
From the video description.
Artist frequently put their lyrics in the description of their videos. 5SOS does this on a number of their videos. This is the only one of their videos where the lyrics in the description 1. from a different version of the song and 2. have a typo in them
Here is one of the screenshots of the LTM Official MV that I took.
Tumblr media
These were the official lyrics that Ashton, Calum and Luke wrote with Ali Tamposi. And then a very talented and good female singer, Julia Michaels, was brought in so they could make the official lyrics publicly available
It is strange that they would do this. Why not just leave both versions of the lyrics under the proper versions of each video? Unless the lyrics of the official audio version aren’t actually the right lyrics.
It is careless and weird that the grammar on most of their videos (all of their other music videos) is good and then suddenly on LTM the first typo on a music video appears. They would have caught it and fixed it by now, surely.
These boys don’t know how to spell “Change” huh? ‘Chang’
Don’t know how to edit the description of a YouTube video? Forgot to? Don’t care to?  Remember when Michael told Luke on twitter to go back to school.
Change is the only word mispelled in the description of any of their music videos...because the lyrics were “Changed.”
Yes, it is entirely possible something this cryptic occurred.
Think Think Think
The cleverness within this band should not be underestimated. Time and time again, artists under Modest! have used covert means to convey the truth of their situations without the majority of their audiences noticing.
These in the description are the original lyrics of LTM. The lyrics of the official release were changed to fit the image that management wanted to promote. This seems to be the implication, so interpretation of the music video rests on these lyrics and not the ones they are singing.
Symbolic Cars
This part was easy for people to pick up on.
Tumblr media
Represented on the passenger side of the center car by 96 like Hemmo1996.
Then there’s the other side of the car.
Tumblr media
Represented on the driver’s side of the center car by these two lower-cased letters: ae.  So who’s ae?
There are a number of options for people special enough in Luke’s life that he might want in the car with him, in fact, a person he cares enough about that that person might be the driver. A person with ae in their name. So there’s a lot of those. What narrows down the options is that ae is a person who is close to  Luke but in the same situation as Luke. They are both circled by cars that represent threats to their wellbeing. So you can decide who ae is. It couldn’t be a coincidence that this video was released the week of Michael Clifford’s engagement. That would be ludicrous.
Now we can talk about the video story
Tumblr media
L can see the mess before he agrees to be a part of it. The two cars are already circling like sharks before he gets into the car. He still gets into the car, sitting in the backseat. He’s surrendered for the next half of the video. Pain and heartbreak etched into his face.
The circling cars represent “toxic people” like Ashton clued. So the circling cars are toxic relations.
He addresses the first chorus primarily to the circling car with toxic person #1.  This is a person who left him not only emotionally fraught but publicly humiliated him and scarred his reputation, then dropped all responsibility for fun and left him to do the clean up.
And now I wish we never met
because you are too hard to forget
While I’m cleaning up your mess
I know he’s taking off your dress
And I know that you don’t, but if I ask you if you love me
I hope you lie, lie, lie, lie, lie, lie to me
The easy interpretation:
1.     The person involved is sleeping with someone else but L isn’t angry that he’s been betrayed. Maybe because he loves her so much he could even forgive that...or maybe because he actually never loved her.
2.    Her marks on his life still causes a lot of grief because she publicly humiliated him and took no responsibility, so this is why all his regret stems from being stuck in the dump she threw him into
3.     But he’s in communication with her---so he can ask her questions. Like if she still loves him. But that doesn’t make sense if he didn’t even like her that much.
“LTM represents when someone is in a relationship for something other than what you are there for.” Like fame or publicity, but Luke is using her for something else entirely.
Luke was being used because he was in a vulnerable situation. He still is in a vulnerable situation. It made it easy for others to hurt him but he didn’t rely on them.
He starts by regretting the toxic relationship, but in these last two lines, he is turning to a different person, his person.
Luke’s voice lifts at the end of each chorus as he turns to his last hope. “And I know that you don’t” because he sees how disgusted the person must be by the situation “but if I ask you if you love me, I hope you lie...” I hope you’ll love me. Despite how much you couldn’t--don’t like me.
It’s 3 am and the moonlight’s testing me
I know you’ve been holding onto someone else
And now I can’t sleep (Ah)
I ain’t happy, oh
I ain’t too happy, oh
This verse starts immediately after the first time we get to see the driver’s side of the car where it says ae. This is extremely coincidental. It’s shifting focus onto another person.
So he’s addresses ae basically, ‘I feel tested. I’ve turned to you and begged you to take me, but you’ve been acting like me, holding on to the same stories I’ve been through with a toxic person. It worries me. I am not happy. But I am also not mad at you.’
Luke holds back from accusing ae even though he would like to. He is wounded again by ae’s actions but he does not want to outright blame ae for the situation that they are both stuck in the center of.
Tumblr media
Flashing back to New York City
Chang your flight so you stay with me
Remember thinking that I got this right
‘Flashing back’ is when we recall memories. Nostalgia sets in for a better time. The first pre-chorus, Luke has a balance he is reminiscing about when he at the time thought he could balance both of his relationships perfectly. There was turmoil of course--the need to re-negotiate flights because of a mess up with leaving to New York--but it was alright after that and that’s why he was led into a false sense of security that he got this “right.” Did anyone ever have to change flights when they were trying to leave New York city because of a mistake.
It’s funny that I thought this typo was on purpose because the official lyric again is ‘Change your flight so you stay with me’ but if it was really meant to be ‘changed’ then it would fit a dual purpose, warning us about the lyric flop and talking about that one time someone had their flight changed when they were trying to stay with Luke too. I’m dropping hints like bombs but I’m not saying what I’m talking about yet and it’s hilarious and terrible. Later post I promise.
Flashing back to New York City
I was done but you undid me
Classic me to run when it feels right
The second time, Luke runs away from New York City, symbol of stability and security within his relationship with ae. He was done--he didn’t have any interest in connection with any of the toxic ones--but you undid me--again the theme of being humiliated and having a slaughtered reputation, the pain that goes with that. And now after the 3am verse  Luke is with ae, and done with TP #1, but ae’s ‘someone else,’ the second circling car, the other toxic person, is there to ruin Luke’s life again but by being attached to ae. This time Luke wants out. He’s so done already but this person is causing him double the agony that the last one did because he’s involving someone he cares for deeply. And he leaves the car before either of the circling cars smash into it. There is no Luke to hurt. Luke got out when “it feels right.” He knew this time that things were going well with ae but he gave up on ae because he was tired.
Tumblr media
While Luke was humiliated, and went through a great deal of grief because of his toxic relationship, at no time during the car collisions do we see 96. Instead, the footage of the driver’s side of the car with the prominent ae is flipped so it looks as though the wheel of the car is on the right side passenger side of the car. It’s as though everything that once applied to Luke’s situation now applies to ae’s cause holy shit.
Tumblr media
As it turns out, ae takes the hardest hit. The tempo is the most upbeat it was the entire video during the last chorus.  Luke is still surrendered to the situation but he’s protesting against the way they have been treated. Now all the boys are united, not just watching Luke. They’re all supporting each other. Luke is talking to Toxic Relationship person 2 in this chorus. He is stronger now. He’s done this before and the boys are supporting him. He’s standing up for ae.
Last chorus:
Now I wish we never met
'Cause you're too hard to forget
While he's taking off my dress
I know she's laying on your chest
The relationship between himself and ae is the strongest it’s ever been, but even when ae’s taking off Luke’s clothes, Luke can tell that ae’s toxic relationship weighs on his heart. It is as though she is laying on his chest like depression weighs on the heart. Also this is gay if it’s real.
Final verses:
I know that you don't, but if I ask you if you love me
I hope you lie, lie, lie, lie, lie to me
Singing, lie, lie, lie, lie, lie
Li-li-lie, lie, lie, lie, lie
Lie, lie, lie, lie, lie
Li-li-lie, lie, lie, lie, lie (Yeah yeah)
I know that you don't, but if I ask you if you love me
I hope you lie, lie, lie, lie, lie to me
The last part “I know that you don’t....” is repeated twice with many desperate pleas for lies. It is repeated twice for both types of relationships: toxic and ae.
For toxic, he hopes that they pretend that they love him. He’ll even sing their lies. For ae, he hopes whenever they are in public playing their games of animosity, if he ever slips up and does something loving or a giveaway, he hopes ae will lie about loving Luke too and follow through playing their pretend game of hate because it’s the only way to avoid making the situation worse, and that’s the one thing the management and the boys want.
Then the car explodes
Tumblr media
Because he knows, they know, it’s not going to work. All the lies are going to blow them up. So the car explodes. Showing ae. The lies literally made ae explode.
An hour after the Lie to Me Music Video premieres, Michael’s fiancee announces publicly that they are engaged.
Take care everyone :) tpwk including you

[INTERVIEW] TRANS : Red Velvet Seulgi GQ October Edition
We especially requested you to be interviewed out of Red Velvet. Why do you think we chose you? I don’t know. Maybe it was because I’m popular among women but it’s GQ...
Maybe it was because of your coolness. You don’t look fussy, anxious nor easily swept away by things.  I value doing my end of the work as well as I can a lot. I think there are people who notice that I think a lot about what my role is, what I’m good at and what I’m trying to express the most out of this job.
If that were true, we’d simply say you were hard-working. People might have found some charms that I haven’t discovered about myself. But I personally look up to people who do their part of the job the best they can. And that’s the kind of person I think of when other people tell me that I’m cool.
Who’s the coolest person to you out of all the people in the world? Mom and dad. When I said that I wanted to be a singer when I was young, they supported me with everything they could. They even signed up for auditions in my place. On top of that, they even packed lunch boxes and fed them to me whenever I finished practicing and went back home. I spent my seven years as a trainee like that.
It looks like they took care of you like a sports star. Yeah, at first I thought my parents were being too extra, because I thought I was all grown up. I even worried that I might not be able to survive on my own if they kept doing things like that to me. But, even these days, when I tell them that I’m stressed over my singing, they talk to me like a vocal coach. Nowadays, they trust me and leave me alone. They just say that they hope I come back to them whenever I feel down.
What has changed the most about you while being a part of Red Velvet? I really think I’m changing constantly. I can feel that I change depending on what kind of mindset I have at that moment. A lot of things cross my mind because of that. These days, I don’t know what kind of person I am. But then again, I’m sure everybody’s like this. Sometimes, I’m confident to do something, but other times, even if the littlest thing goes wrong, I lose confidence and look timid. Then I figure out what’s wrong with me and get better. Stuff like these just all exist inside of me.
The fact that your job requires you to present every aspect of yourself to the public is what makes it harder, isn’t it? Yeah. But that’s also how I get energized.
During your trainee years, did you learn how to get interviewed? No. Before, I took a look at the questions ahead of time and wrote all of my answers below it, in fear that I might forget them. But these days, I think I’m able to speak without going through all of that because I think about these things casually. If, when I first debuted, I censored myself to say typical things in case it could cause controversy, nowadays, I find out what I’ve been thinking about these days while getting interviewed. I like interviews like these because they’re like short logs of my life. Before, I did hide myself a lot. I mean, I still have some sides of me that I haven’t revealed. I think that I’ll look pretty doing this, but then again, I realize, I don’t look pretty when I smile. Things like that. I know I have things that I’m still hiding right now, but I’m planning onto not put too much effort in covering them up. I’m learning how to show those things naturally.
You look comfortable being interviewed. Is there anything that people don’t know about you well despite your efforts to not cover yourself up?  Um... If I were to list one thing, I’m not as hard-working as people think I am. I’m the kind of person who gets things done, even if it means I have to rush through it. But, the thing is that it takes me a long time to summon the energy to motivate myself to get that done... Really, I’m not the kind of person who plans everything out in advance.
But I heard that you make sure to do everything the best you can, whether it’s a variety show or a special stage. I try to do whatever it takes to make that happen. Even if that means I have to stay up all night. But that doesn’t mean that I’m hard-working.
Maybe it’s because you’re known for being a trainee for a long time. Lots of people take pity on me by saying things like, “Oh, how did you go through all that,” “That must have been rough,” but I wish they wouldn’t. I, myself, don’t think it was that much of a hard time. Of course, there were some rough patches, but it’s like how someone who’s been a trainee for three years has their own three years of hardship and trouble. Let’s say someone who’s been a trainee for three years debuts with me. Then that means that that person has to get used to working with me, a person who has trained for seven years. That, in other words, means that that person had to condense what I had to go through seven years and get it done in three years. Everybody has their own pace and time. If I had really debuted after just three years of practice, I would have been more lost than I am now.
You once said that you were having a hard time keeping up with the busy schedules. How do you manage to keep calm and get things done when you have tons of things to do? I just say to myself that this is my job. Actually, that’s something that I always have in mind. I push through by thinking that I can’t let go of this for the people around me, like my fans and the staff. And it feels really good when people notice what I’ve worked on. I became a singer for people to notice my hard work and also because I enjoy getting my hard work being noticed.
Is there a habit you have kept without fail ever since you’ve debuted? Hmm... Ah! I tried to make the people who know me like me! My personality is like that. Even when I was young, I had a good relationship with my classmates too. People who don’t know me could not like me. But I’ve always told myself to try to leave a good impression of myself in the people who do know me. I don’t like being on bad terms with people. I’m more of a people person. If there’s someone who’s talking bad about me, I want to listen to what that person has to say too, and ask, “Why don’t you like me?” (Giggles)
Do you have anything that you’ve learned to let go after debuting? My looks? Of course, I think that everybody has their own characteristics and charms. But you know the generic kind of beauty that people have, right? I’m trying to not think too much about that. I’m trying not to focus too much on pretty things.
Wait, what? I’m getting more and more surprised because the more I look at you, the more you resemble the actress Lee Young-Ae. My looks are constantly exposed to the public because of my job, so if I didn’t have that kind of mindset, I’m sure I would have been really stressed. But, it’s the era of individuality now. If there’s one thing that I’m confident in my looks, it’s the locations of my ears, eyes, mouth, and nose! When I debuted, I got lots of hate comments and got called out for my looks, which made my self-esteem plummet. But I’ve let go of all of that. In the “Laws of the Jungle,” I was just like, ‘Here goes nothing,’ and revealed my no-makeup face in front of the camera. I find people who are honest about themselves cool and pretty. And they look much more charming when they’re like that. It’s way cooler to see people not blindly follow other people.
If there’s one ability that you really need right now, what would it be? Being able to say what I want right away.
You can’t? No. I wish I could just say what’s in my head well. From a long time ago, I thought I was a bit boring. I like chatting quietly like this, but I think that makes me look shabby compared to the other bright people in the music industry. I also feel like I ruin everything because I’m not good at telling stories well. It got to the point where I was convinced that I had a talent for making everything awkward. So, I want to say what I want right away, without hesitation. I’m wondering about whether drinking will help me get over this problem, because when I’m drinking with other people, that bright and relaxed atmosphere helps me be more honest.
If you could steal someone’s abilities, whose would you steal? Beyonce’s. Wow, I wonder what she feels like being able to dance and sing like that. She must feel really happy being the best at everything...
In a past interview, you said that you wanted to learn how to play the guitar. Have you made any progress on that? This proves why I’m not hard-working. (Giggles) You see, if I make a plan, it becomes a long-term plan no matter what, because there isn’t a date that I have to accomplish it by.
It might be risky for you to make any plans without setting an urgent deadline.  Yeah, I think so. Then again, even when I was young, I always crammed for my exams, but I have a reason for that. I only had one week to study for my exams while being a trainee. Instead of going to the company for that week, I’d get tutored and study till dawn. I’ve gotten too used to that now, so, if I have something that I need to do, I set a deadline and make sure it gets done by then.
Then what are some of the extra long-term goals you have as being a part of Red Velvet? Red Velvet is a group that tries out a variety of concepts, right? I mean, it’s gotten to the point where I can’t figure out what to wear when I have to perform ‘Peek-A-Boo’ and ‘Power Up’ in one performance. But concentrating on every moment of that is really fun. When else would I be able to dance intimidatingly and make those kinds of facial expressions if it wasn’t for ‘Bad Boy?’ I think Red Velvet is a group where unique people have come together to sing unique songs and express uniqueness. I don’t like cliche things, so I like the direction that the company is leading Red Velvet to. Although now I’m only able to pitch in a few opinions while performing at concerts, I hope that in the future I’ll be able to participate more in building the direction that Red Velvet will take, since we’ve been in the industry for quite some time and we’re starting to understand what our color is like.
Could you share a super short-term goal that you’ve achieved recently? I think I’m just winding down by eating yummy things these days. Before, I didn’t have the luxury of being able to try yummy things or food. But now it’s different. I have to eat want I immediately. So I ate gopchang yesterday.

26th March 1834 saw the death of Jean Armour.
Jean Armour was the wife of our national bard Robert Burns, if you are wondering how come she wasn't Jean Burns then, that was because it is a relatively modern trate the women take the surname of their husbands. Next time you are in an old graveyard look at some of the stones, where the husband and wife are buried together it will have her using her maiden name rather than that of her hubby.
Known as the as the "Belle of Mauchline" Jean was second oldest of 11 children to master mason James Armour and Mary Smith. Jean Armour Burns was a mother at 21, a wife two years later and a widow at 30. She was as faithful to the poet in death as in life, her widowhood of 38 years lasting one year longer than her husband's life itself. She was to die in 1834, still resident in the same two-storey house in Dumfries that she had shared with Burns for the last three years of their marriage.
There are a few versions of how they first met, I tend to believe the one on the Burns website that it was in 1784 at a dance during Race Week, Burns and his brother Gilbert brought their widowed mother and their sisters to the farm of Mossgiel which sits to this day on the road between Mauchline and Kilmarnock. Young Rabbie was soon making inroads with the local talent, and she first merits a mention in his verse of that year, The Belles Of Mauchline, of which Burns writes that there are six
In Mauchline there dwells six proper young belles, The pride of the place and its neighbourhood a'; Their carriage and dress, a stranger would guess, In Lon'on or Paris, they'd gotten it a'.
Miss Miller is fine, Miss Markland's divine, Miss Smith she has wit, and Miss Betty is braw: There's beauty and fortune to get wi' Miss Morton, But Armour's the jewel for me o' them a'.
Much has been said about Burns's womanising but he loved his wife, without a doubt, In his poem, It Is Na, Jean, Thy Bonie Face, written in 1788, the year they finally married there is an outpouring of Burns’s love for Jean, crucially, it is ‘na her bonie face’ that he admires, ‘altho’ [her] beauty and [her] grace/ Might weel awauk desire’. Instead, it is her mind he loves. This shows Burns’s respect for Jean as a person with her own thoughts and desires. He goes on to say that even if he was not the one to make her happy, that someone would and that she’d be ‘blest’. He even says that he would die for her: this selfless desire to see her happy chimes much more with the image of Burns as the great lover of women that the world knows.
So how come it took him 0ver four years for them to marry? Well Jean found herself pregnant by the end of 1785, she announced this to her father the following March causing him to faint! James Armour didn't think Burns was a suitable husband for his wife, Jean carried with her a paper signed by Burns, which, under the Scots law of the day, probably constituted a marriage contract, James appalled at this threw the slip of paper in the fire,or cut it up, again there are a couple of different versions. Burns was warned off and after appearing before church elders on three occasions left Ayrshire with the acknowledgement he was a single man. at one point he contemplated leaving Scotland for the West Indies. It wasn't long before Burns was seeing Mary Campbell also known as Highland Mary, he admitted this in a letter to a friend that he had been guilty of 'dissipation and riot... and other mischief', and that Mary might be carrying his child. At this point he had his thoughts were that Jean had deserted him, rather than the other way round, it was perhaps Jeans father forcing them apart. Burns also found that James Armour had invoked civil law against him. Following the early success of The Kilmarnock Edition of his poems Burns spent a lot of his time in Edinburgh, where he met Agnes Maclehose, subject of his song Ae Fond Kiss, I've posted a few times on Agnes or "Clarinda" as her pen name, although there was an attraction between the two circumstances conspired against them and he never bedded his "Nancy".
Burns signed the sole ownership of Mossgiel over to his brother to stave off any claims made by Jim Armour, he was still seeing Jean on visit its home, she had given birth to twins in September 1786, only one of whom survived. On one of his visits back west he learned that Highland Mary had died of 'malignant fever' at Greenock. He sought out Jean in Mauchline during which time Jean became pregnant by him again. Possibly they 'threw' Jean at Burns, hopefully assuming she would have the wit to make him marry her before giving her body to him once more. In any case, then they found out that poor Jean had muffed things again, they were furious and refused to allow her to remain under their roof.
Burns, dallying with Clarinda in Edinburgh, heard about Jean's misfortunes shortly before Christmas. He was suffering from an injured leg as the result of a carriage accident, so he begged Willie Muir of Tarbolton to give her shelter. Swiftly, Burns left Edinburgh for Mauchline where he arrived on 23rd February 1788. He took a room for Jean in Mauchline and arranged for a doctor to attend her. To Clarinda he wrote comparing Jean to a 'farthing taper'. To Ainslie on 3rd March, the day of Jean's confinement he wrote:
"Jean I found banished like a martyr — forlorn, destitute and friendless; all for the good old cause: I have reconciled her to her fate: I have reconciled her to her mother: I have taken her a room: I have taken her to my arms: I have given her a mahogany bed: I have given her a guinea; and I have fucekd her till she rejoiced with joy unspeakable and full of glory. But — as I always am on every occasion — I have been prudent and cautious to an astounding degree; I swore her, privately and solemnly, never to attempt any claim on me as a husband, even though anybody should persuade her she had such a claim, which she has not, neither during my life nor after my death. She did all this like a good girl, and I took the opportunity of some dry horse litter and gave her such a thundering scalade that electrified the very marrow of her bones."
On 25th May, Burns wrote to James Johnson: 'I am so enamoured with a certain girl's prolific twin-bearing merit, that I have given her a legal title to the best blood in my body; and so farewell Rakery!' Although their marriage was registered on 5 August 1788 in Mauchline, the parish records describe them as having been "irregularly married some years ago". She and Burns moved to Ellisland Farm where they stayed until 1791 when they moved to Dumfries, where both would live for the rest of their lives.
Jean bore Burns 9 children, the last on the day of her husband's funeral. Only three of them survived her. She seems to have been a generous, compliant woman, with a clear singing voice, though in no way her husband's intellectual equal, and willing to put up with his wildest extravagances, even to the extent of taking in his bastard daughter by Anna Park with the remark 'Our Robbie should have had twa wives.'
Jean outlived her husband by 38 years, answering the questions of the early haliologists with patient good nature. Latterly she suffered from high blood pressure, and endured a series of strokes, the second of which left her partly paralysed and dependent on her favourite grand-daughter, Sara.
No portrait of her is known until she became a grandmother. Three of her in later years exist, but some clever American Professor called David Purdie took the portraits of Jean to someone, and using techniques that the FBI use agreed to take the images of the paintings and the silhouette, integrate them into a software programme and regress her to the age of 23 in the year she married Burns. the result is the pic you see.
Burns wrote in all 14 songs commonly associated with Jean. Of these, by far the greatest is 'Of a' the Airts the Wind can Blaw', of which Burns said, 'The air is by Marshall; the song I composed out of compliment to Mrs Burns', The song first appeared in 1790 in the Scots Musical Museum. The air first appeared as 'Miss Admiral Gordon's Strathspey' in William Marshall's Collection of Reels, in 1781.
Of a' the airts the wind can blaw, I dearly like the west, For there the bonie lassie lives, The lassie I lo'e best:
There's wild-woods grow, and rivers row, And mony a hill between: But day and night my fancys' flight Is ever wi' my Jean.
I see her in the dewy flowers, I see her sweet and fair: I hear her in the tunefu' birds, I hear her charm the air: There's not a bonie flower that springs, By fountain, shaw, or green; There's not a bonie bird that sings, But minds me o' my Jean.
You can listen to Eddi Reader sing the song on the video above.

I am trying to keep each of these posts to around 2,000 words, just seems like anything more would be too over-whelming!  Which means I had to break Ranbir off from his Dad.  But, as a bonus, I am tossing in his youngest uncle (not much to say about Rajiv).  And I will be back on Thursday to deal with the “other” Kapoors, Anil and Sonam and their clan. (part 1 here, part 2 here, part 3 here, part 4 here)
IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER: These are not “facts”, or “true”, or maybe they are, I have no way of knowing!  I don’t know the Kapoor family personally or anything like that.  But  if you are just beginning to get into the films, I want to give you a sense of the background that most people have for the Kapoors, what is behind all the allusions in film articles and odd comments in interviews.
In my last section, I dealt with the somewhat toxic and dangerous situation in which Ranbir grew up, what with his father’s drinking and abuse of his mother.  Of course, that isn’t true now, Rishi seems to have straightened up and gotten better and he and Neetu are more in love and happier than ever.  But when Ranbir was little, it was really not great.  And maybe that is why he ran off to New York as soon as he was old enough.
In New York, Ranbir studied at the School of Visual Arts, a for-profit film school.  And the Lee Strasberg institute.  And while there, he made a couple of short films.
This is me being pedantic for a second and translating these credentials from how they are perceived in India versus America and what they mean in the real world.  In India, Ranbir is occasional referred to as “studying film in New York” in hushed tones, like this is an amazing credential.  I think there may be some lack of clarity between “studying film in New York” and “studying film at NYU”.  New York University has one of the best film programs in America, highly competitive, being accepted and completing it really means something.  Both of the schools Ranbir studied at are open to pretty much anyone who applies.  But what matters (especially in terms of the Strasberg institute) is what you do with it.
(Talia Balsam, for instance, took her Strasberg training and married George Clooney and then John Slattery.  If only all their graduates could be so lucky!)
Both schools (especially the Strasberg’s, of course) have rolls and rolls of distinguished alumni.  Who worked hard and learned all they could, and then went out into the real world and proved their abilities.  Proved them in the way a “real” NYU graduate might not need to, they might be able to get by on the diploma and the connections, whereas a School of Visual Arts student really has to scramble and get there on their on merit.
And so here is Ranbir, who has the kind of technical training you get in an American film program, and the method acting training you get at the Strasberg institute.  And the Kapoor credentials.  And a seriously messed up childhood (which is also kind of a Kapoor credential).
(Messed up!  Lots of servants, but messed up.  See little Ranbir on the floor in the background?)
One thing I really respect about Ranbir is that he has been upfront about rejecting his New York training in favor of the desi style training he got in India.  He says that he realized the filmwork in New York was useless after a few years, and came back to work as a utility apprentice for Sanjay Leela Bhansali and “really” learn the business.
This is the training his father and uncles and grandfather, even his great-grandfather Prithviraj, all got.  Prithviraj worked at Bombay Talkies studio, where it was expected that everyone would know a little of everything.  Acting, editing, directing, sweeping the canteen, whatever job was needed, you had to be able to leap in and do it.
Raj of course grew up with this attitude, and was treated like an employee backstage at Prithviraj Theaters, and so did Shammi and Shashi.  Raj may have been the only big deal successful producer/director as well as star out of all of them, but Shammi and Shashi both tried their hands at directing in later years and did a decent job of it.  Neither of their films were huge popular successes, but the critics liked them and Shammi’s Manoranjan is a bit of a cult fave (if you can find a copy, watch it!  Super fun).
(Manoranjan is a remake of Irma La Douce, but with a Desi touch)
Rishi had his own directing attempts, helping his brother Randhir finish their father’s incomplete last film (Henna, generally accepted as India’s first cross-religion romance), and later making his own movie Aa Ab Laut Chalen in 1999, with the assistance of his 16-17 year old son Ranbir (and staring 26 year old Aishwarya Rai.  Now think of their sex scenes in ADHM and cringe).
I’m not saying they were great directors, but all the Kapoor movie stars who came before Ranbir had the training and ability to direct.  Not because they “studied in New York”, but because it was just something you were expected to know if you were going to be a major star.  How can you pick scripts and films and keep your “brand” alive, if you don’t know every part of the filmmaking process?
And so Ranbir worked for Sanjay Leela Bhansali for a year, and then received the kind of grand launch that no one in his family had ever really received before.  Randhir was expected to direct his own first movie, Rishi was shoved out to earn money for the family, and Raj and his brothers just sort of stumbled into a film and finally found their feet several films later.
Unfortunately, Ranbir stumbled too.  His first movie Saawariya had him playing a kind of strange imitation of his grandfather’s young innocent role, in this weird Blue world, in a plot borrowed from Russia without nearly enough alternations to fit India.  It didn’t have the “Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani” that Ranbir’s grandfather taught us was needed to make an Indian film work.
(They tried to call back to Raj Kapoors umbrella, but even that couldn’t save it.  Also, it’s really really boring)
As damaging, possibly, Ranbir was shoved out into the world of the Indian press already tagged with the “Kapoor womanizer” label.  “Everyone” knew that he and Sonam had started a romance when they were first assisting together on the Black set, that it had continued through filming Saawariya, and that she had left him because he cheated on her.  These rumors are so strong that I am inclined to believe them, but it is also a bit unfair that Ranbir barely had time to find his legs as a public figure and we all had already decided he was another serial womanizer like his father, his grandfather, and all his uncles (except Shashi).
Ranbir leaned into this “womanizer” image, and the family heritage, with his second film and his first successful film, Bachna Ae Haseeno, the title (and title song) coming from his father’s famous song in Hum Kissese Kum Nahin.
But he followed it up with something completely different, which finally let him make his mark as something a little different than the Kapoors who had come before, Wake Up Sid.  This is also his first collaboration with Ayan Mukherjee.  If you haven’t heard of Ayan and Ranbir before, just think of it as Ayan-Ranbir=Karan-Shahrukh.  They are best friends, they go everywhere together, and Ayan is also a brilliant scriptwriter/director who can perfectly capture Ranbir’s talents onscreen.  Oh, and Ayan is Kajol’s cousin on her father’s side (the Mukherjee family is a whole other Hindi 101 lesson).  Woman may come and go, but take it as a given that Ayan will always always be in Ranbir’s life, and is his “life partner” in a way no woman ever has been.
(Also, they are really cute together.  I honestly don’t think it is a romantic partnership, but I would be soooooooooooo happy for them if I found out it was.  Seems like the healthiest relationship Ranbir has ever had in his life)
His brilliant performance in Wake Up Sid, unfortunately was over-shadowed by more “womanizer” stories, as we all learned that his co-star from Bachna Ae Haseeno, young previously unsuccessful starlet Deepika, was now his serious girlfriend and had even had his initials tattooed on her neck.  And then shortly afterwards learned that she had broken up with him for, once again, cheating on her.
(most scandalous and exciting version of this story: Ranbir and Kat start fooling around on the sets of Ajab Prem Ki Kahani.  He flies her over to New York so they can continue their affair while he is filming Anjaana Anjaani with Priyanka.  Priyanka calls up Deepika and tells on him.  Deepika breaks up with him.  And is either grateful to Priyanka, or a little mad at her along with everyone else for using the situation to her advantage, depending on which source you read.  Or, a couple of rare sources say, he was cheating on Dips with both Kat and Priyanka, and Priyanka only spilled the beans on Kat out of sour grapes when she found out she wasn’t the only one)
Maybe if Ranbir’s films had been more consistently successful, the press would have focused on them instead of his affairs.  Or maybe because his films were such flops, Ranbir used the publicity around his personal life to stay relevant.  Either way, it got to be a bit of a toxic cycle.  2010 through 2013 he had flop after flop (with a brief intermission for sort-of flop Barfi!) and all of India was captivated by watching him bounce from Sonam to Dips to Kat.  Including one of the all time great Koffee with Karan episodes in which Sonam and Deepika were on together and just about ripped him to shreds.
(This is them laughing at their ex-boyfriend together on international TV.  Fun for Ranbir, I’m sure!)
And then he finally had a hit in 2013 with his second Ayan Mukherjee collaboration, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani.  Which is also the first time he has co-stared with Deepika post-messy break-up.  And suddenly people were talking about his acting and his star power instead of his personal life, for once.  Okay, they are still talking about his personal life, but not in a way that makes him look particularly bad.
In 2013, a photo surfaced of Kat and he on a beach together on vacation, her in a tiny bikini.  I am still not entirely clear on what the problem was with this photo (the bikini?  The vacation together?) but the Indian press went mad for it.  There were all these stories about how Rishi and Neetu disapproved, the scandal, this that and the other thing.  Ranbir rode it out without really saying anything, poor Kat got caught in the center of the storm while on the Dhoom 3 press tour, but luckily Aamir was there to be the consummate gentlemen and take the heat off the questions.  And Salman her ex also stepped in to make some comments in support (one of my favorite things Salman has ever done).
(These are the photos.  I’m still not seeing the scandal.  If anyone in the comments can explain it, please do!)
The “photo” stories finally died down, and instead we started getting stories about how Kat and Ranbir had moved in together, how an engagement was in the works, etc. etc.  These stories started ramping up as his career took another nosedive.  Again, I don’t think his PR machine was using his personal life to keep him relevant, but I do think the Indian press knew that the Kapoor name sells newspapers, and if he didn’t have a good movie to write about, they would write about his personal life.  And so, as Besharam, Roy, Bombay Velvet, and Tamasha all slowly cranked out and died sad deaths, we learned about Kat and him throwing a housewarming party, Neetu shopping for wedding cards, the hunt for venues, what Rishi thought about all of this, and everything else the press could invent.
And in the middle of this desert of film failures, bam!  Biggest Ranbir personal scandal of them all hit the news!  Months before the wedding was rumored to happen, after the engagement had been officially announced, it was over.  Ranbir moved out of their shared apartment and back into his grandmother’s house, Kat started looking for a new place to live and (supposedly) spending time with her ex-Salman.
All this while Ranbir’s most public former relationship, Deepika, was gloriously triumphantly happy in her personal life and professional life.  And his second most famous ex, Sonam, was too.  Sure, there were stories that Kat left him because he was tomcatting around again, Alia (of all people!) was mentioned.  But based on his recent Koffee With Karan appearance, and his strict focus on work and work relationships (months and months spent working on ADHM, more months spent now on the Sanjay Dutt biopic), Ranbir is breaking off from that loverboy image once and for all.  Or at least trying to.  He wants to go back to being known as the serious actor of the Kapoor family, and he is trying to go back to being the “filmmaker trained in New York” Kapoor, with his co-production on Jagga Jasoos possibly showing the way towards making RK Studios the premiere house in Bombay again, instead of just a large physical plant rented by other studios to shoot their own films.
Ranbir is the future of RK Studios and the end of the Rishi Kapoor line, but there is another Kapoor who is sadly trapped in the past.
I talked about how Randhir and Rishi both suffered from alcohol in different ways (at least, so it appears from the outside).  And then there is their brother Rajiv, who drowned in it.  Or drowned in something, poor Rajiv just never really made it.  He was the youngest brother, by 10 years.  And the last Kapoor to get a “launch”.  Well, kind of a launch.  More along the lines of his brother Rishi, they needed a cheap young actor to do a role no one else would touch, so they looked to family.  He had even acted in a few films already, but none of them had made much of an impression on the audience, so his first RK Studios film is generally thought of as his “first” film.
Rajiv’s only movie with his father, and only big hit, was Ram Tera Ganga Mali.  Which is mostly memorable for being, well, something akin to softporn.  Mandakini, his 22 year old co-star, wore a see-through sari with no blouse, “breastfed” onscreen, and had a surprisingly sexual childbirth scene as well.
(Notice Rajiv is not visible anywhere on the DVD case.  Also, interesting, it is Mandakini in this movie that is referenced in Kapoor and Sons, a movie starring Rajiv’s older brother)
It was a massive hit, and Raj Kapoor’s last film as a director (as mentioned in Rishi’s post, Raj’s final film was unfinished, Henna, completed by his sons after his death).
Rajiv went on to act in a casual way, doing one or two films a year for the next few years.  And then he started producing, helping on the production of his father’s last film.  Trying directing in a movie with his brother and Madhuri Dixit (hanging out on this set as a recently pubescent boy was the beginning or Ranbir’s crush on her which eventually lead to her cameo in Yeh Jawaani).  That failed, and then a few years later he helped out on his brother Rishi’s film, which also failed.
(The film was Prem Granth.  And look at her!  What 12 year old boy wouldn’t get a bit of a crush on her, even if she was filming love scenes with his Dad directed by his uncle?)
In 2001, at age 40 and after failing to make his mark as an actor, director, or producer, Rajiv was married to an architect.  A few years later that failed as well.  And so he is the youngest Kapoor brother, no children, no success, spending his days hanging around the RK Studios sorting through rental receipts for the space his father built, and keeping track of copyrights and DVD releases for the films of his more famous relatives.
(Randhir, Rishi, and Rajiv last year)
He is so harmless, that he is the one Twinkle Khanna picked on her most recent Koffee appearance, “Chimpu” Kapoor.  Which reminds me, I can’t leave off the “real” Kapoors without a nickname rundown.  These are private family names, but when you are a Kapoor, nothing is private.  And so the media has adopted them as well.
Raj=Raju
Shammi=Shammi (his real name was “Shamsher”, but no one remembers that)
Shashi=Shashi (real name is Balbir Raj)
Randhir=Dabboo
Rishi=Chintu (thus his twitter handle “@chintskap”)
Rajiv=Chimpu
Karisma=Lolo
Kareena=Bebo
Ranbir=Ganglu (but it isn’t as publicized.  Supposedly it is what his grandfather Raj called him when he was little.  Awwww!)
And that’s it for the “real” Kapoors!  At least until Navya Naveli has her launch, or unless either of the Jain boys finally make it big.  However, there are the “other” Kapoors, the distant relations who were about 50 years behind the “real” Kapoors, but are rapidly making up for lost time.  Come back on Thursday for Anil, Boney, Sonam, Arjun, Sanjay, and Sridevi!
Hindi 101: The Kapoors, Part V, Ranbir Arrives, Plus the Last Kapoor Brother I am trying to keep each of these posts to around 2,000 words, just seems like anything more would be too over-whelming!

Raazi Review – Bollywood Hungama
In the past few years, Bollywood has churned out some very exciting spy films like AGENT VINOD [2012], PHANTOM [2015], BABY [2015], BANG BANG [2014], EK THA TIGER [2012], TIGER ZINDA HAI [2017], D-DAY [2013] etc. Most of these films also had the role of a female spy who looked like she meant business and would easily kick ass. Katrina Kaif’s portrayal in the TIGER series is the most apt example. But imagine a spy who’s completely feminine replete with long, flowy hair and salwar kurtas et al. Anil Sharma did slightly touch upon this aspect in 2003 with his biggie THE HERO: LOVE STORY OF A SPY. Now Meghna Gulzar attempts to make a complete film on this aspect with RAAZI. So does it manage to engross viewers like the other spy films? Or does it fail in its endeavour? Let’s analyse.
RAAZI is the story of a young girl from India sent to Pakistan as an undercover agent. The year is 1971. Pakistan is all set to make a surprise attack on India and the Indian intelligence is trying it’s best to get the details. Hidayat (Rajit Kapur) lives in Srinagar and travels to Pakistan for business. He is a part of the Indian intelligence but has convinced Pakistani Brigadier Syed (Shishir Sharma) that he works for them. Hidayat is terminally ill and he asks Syed if he can get his daughter Sehmat (Alia Bhatt) married to Syed’s younger son Iqbal (Vicky Kaushal). Syed agrees and surprisingly, Sehmat also gives her nod. Sehmat is obviously being married to Iqbal to spy in the house of Syeds and she gets adequate training from Khalid Mir (Jaideep Ahlawat) from Indian intelligence. Sehmat gets married and she gradually gets attached to Iqbal, who gives her the space and doesn’t force himself on her. Meanwhile Sehmat begins her surveillance and finds out crucial information regarding naval attacks planned by Pakistan against India. However the challenges faced by Sehmat are immense and one wrong move can prove fatal for her. What happens next forms the rest of the story.
RAAZI is based on Harinder S Sikka’s novel ‘Calling Sehmat’. The story is novel and stands out from the rest of the spy films as the lead character goes to any lengths, morals be damned. And this bit comes across very nicely. Bhavani Iyer and Meghna Gulzar’s screenplay is a mixed bag. In most scenes, it’s simplistic and engrossing.
RAAZI doesn’t commence on a high note but grips viewers well. The characters are well established and Sehmat agreeing for the dangerous mission could have come across as not so believable. But thankfully that doesn’t happen. Her training sequence is interesting but the film gets better once she moves to Pakistan. Though the film drops for a while, it picks up brilliantly in the intermission point when Sehmat drives the jeep. Arguably it’s the best part of the film. Post interval, the film has some engaging moments but at the same time, the film begins to slow down. There should have been a more gripping cat and mouse chase game but that never really happens. The manner in which Sehmat is able to escape suspicion most of the times is very unconvincing. The finale however makes up for the minuses to an extent. Some of the scenes however gets complicated. For instance, some of the details provided by Khalid during Sehmat’s training is difficult to process as it is presented too quickly. Also the interest drops in some scenes. Meghna Gulzar’s dialogues are simple and neat and are very craftily written. Meghna Gulzar’s direction is impressive. Despite the content being niche, she tries to tell the story in a commercial format. She does falter at places but overall, manages to do justice to the plot.
Alia Bhatt delivers a powerhouse performance and this is surely one of her most accomplished works. Her character is living a double life and she brings out this aspect very nicely. In the emotional and breakdown sequences, she shines! Vicky Kaushal has a limited screen time but he leaves a mark. His character is sure to be loved. Rajit Kapur is quite endearing. Jaideep Ahlawat is very good. This talented actor deserves to be seen more in movies. Shishir Sharma is quite dependable. Notice how endearing he looks when he’s interacting with Sehmat but transforms in another avatar altogether when he’s talking business. Amruta Khanvilkar (Munira) is lovely. Arif Zakaria (Abdul) plays a dynamic role with panache. Ashwath Bhatt (Mehboob) has a small role but is effective. Soni Razdan (Teji) is okay. Other actors do a good job.
Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy’s music is melodious but won’t be remembered, except for ‘Ae Watan’. The song has an anthem like feel and can get a longer shelf life if it’s played during Independence and Republic Day celebrations in the country. The title track gets noticed while ‘Dilbaro’ is completely relegated to the background.
Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and Tubby’s background score is quite exhilarating. Jay I Patel’s cinematography works big time. The exterior shots of Kashmir are simply breathtaking. Nitin Baid’s editing is nice but should have been more razor sharp. Subrata Chakraborty and Amit Ray’s production design is very authentic. Maxima Basu Golani’s costumes are appealing. Harpal Singh’s action is subtle and not very detailed.
On the whole, RAAZI is an interesting thriller brilliantly narrated by Meghna Gulzar that makes for mature viewing. It is a film that celebrates nationalism that is devoid of the colors of religion. At the box office, it has the potential to grow with positive word of mouth and keep its makers happy.

Baker’s Dozen -1 2016
Tumblr media
Please lady, my tinnitus.
It may be a few months into 2017 but it’s not too late to review the year that was. It can be worthwhile to reflect on the past, to celebrate successes and learn from shortcomings, to track your progress and see how you’ve grown, and to dwell and ruminate on missed opportunities while you lie awake in your bed at two in the morning trapped in a nihilistic prison of your own mind.
I set out every year to challenge myself to do twelve projects. These can be paid gigs or just personal projects that I complete, but I try to get one finished a month. I feel it’s a great motivator and a good way to improve my skills and at the very least it’s a good productive outlet. I generally only count projects or goals that relate to filmmaking or digital media to keep me more focused.
Here’s how I did (in order of release/completion):
1. Four Feet Companion Foundation - Pucks for Paws
youtube
The first project of the year I finished was a volunteer gig for Four Feet Companion Foundation, this is a great little volunteer-run organization that provides financial and volunteer support to local animal charities. Being part animal myself, I was excited to take on this project and contribute to this cause. I believe this is played annually now at every Pucks for Paws event which is their big fundraising event that takes place at the Saddledome. Overall this was a pretty straightforward shoot and I was decently happy with how it turned out.
Some challenges were the logistics of scheduling and traveling to the different locations, as well as setting up the shoots alone without scouting the location first. A lot of these challenges were caused by a truncated timeline.
What I learned: Thinking back and rewatching the video, it’s obvious that in one interview the colour was way off. It ain’t purdy.
There were a few issues that I faced.
Mixed colour temperature. I was dealing with three different temperatures (daylight from the window, overhead fluorescents and a tungsten keylight) and without proper gels I really didn’t know the best course of action to take.
I wasn’t prepared. I didn’t have suitable gels or flags and I flew blind into the location.
I dun goofed. Lastly, I made a mistake in setting the white balance.
Mixed colour temperature is a beast that can only be slain one way: Unifying all light sources to one temperature. As Alex Buono (SNL and Documentary Now! DP) says, there’s no tricks around it, you just have to get all light to be the same temperature the old fashioned way. It seems obvious and is relatively straightforward to do, if albeit time consuming. A quick flick of the switch killed the overhead fluorescents, which left the two mixed sources shining. Altering light sources isn’t so bad in a small room, if you have the tools.
But I didn’t have the tools.
Logistically this was the only room we could shoot in. There were no blinds on the window and no rod or frame to clip a blanket too, even if I did have clips. You think a guy without clips is going to have a flag (fabric designed to cut light that can be easily positioned)? Hell no. I also didn’t have large enough gels to cover the window (known as CTO or colour temperature orange, alters daylight to tungsten) or the keylight (CTB or colour temperature blue, which alters tungsten light to daylight). I just wasn’t prepared.
Lastly I made an M. A mmmm-m-m-m... A mistake. Yes. A big fat one. Juicy and all tender-like.
I didn’t change the white balance on the cameras to tungsten (3200K) from daylight (5500/5600K) prior to shooting. To add insult to amateruish injury, the walls were painted in what I swear to be Tungsten Yellow, which just compounded the problem.
You’d think someone who worked for a company as a corporate videographer with a few years under their belt wouldn’t make mistakes like this. But it happens. Or at least it happened to me. The trick is to learn from your mistakes and try not to retread the same territory again.
So how did I learn from my mistakes?
The colour temperature issue may have been avoided if I was able to scout the location beforehand. Short timelines can be hard to avoid, but one thing I would’ve insisted on for this interview would’ve been requesting some pictures
of potential shooting locations. Now they may not be able to accommodate the request in time, but you have nothing to lose by asking. I assumed, falsely, that shooting in houses are all relatively the same which wasn’t the case.
Furthermore, since this shoot, my kit has grown in size to hopefully avoid a similar issue in the future.
The white balance gaffe spurred me to make a consistent mental checklist and run through it prior to every shoot since. The checklist I will share in a future post! A simple flash of my Gray Card or using a Colour Passport also would’ve saved me a headache. Over the past year I’ve learned a lot more about colour correcting and grading.
Tumblr media
(Top) Last year I was trying to counter the yellow and orange and then glazed it with magenta maybe as a feeble attempt to make it a bit stylized? I couldn’t tell ya. With knowing what I know now, I could salvage it somewhat (Bottom) but it’s best to not make those mistakes in the first place.
That’s also not the worst of it. To add to the stress of the shoot, embarrassingly I may or may not have forgot to bring the quick release plate for the B cam, rendering its tripod useless...
Tumblr media
1/4"-20 on a lightstand is there for this reason, right?
I’m not proud.
Yeah I could’ve balanced it on the tripod head. But I did have the sense to know that gravity wins every time.
Tip: Always check your kit before you leave. Another tip: I didn’t get bogged down and give up with the amateur-hour move, I looked at what I had and used it to jerry-rig a solution. If it’s stupid but it works, it ain’t stupid. Even if it still looks stupid.
2. PONOS Apparel
vimeo
Had a good time shooting this one: a web commercial for a local athletic apparel company. Shot it in a day and overall it went smoothly. Had a quick and dirty shot list that was flexible so it was fun improvising sequences and putting it together in the edit. Loved working with the director, who made shooting it a breeze.
I believe a student who attends at a local highschool created the music.
Challenges were some of the shots such as running nearly full tilt with a Glidecam but I think they worked for what it is. This is where a gimbal or Steadicam or even a vest and arm attachment would’ve made light work of it.
What I learned: I would’ve made some different editing choices now. The part that really sticks out to me now is in the deadlift scene I’d remove the ‘jump cut + crash zooms’ on the kick beat. They’re unnecessary! Sometimes I get an idea in my head and I want to run with it, but it’s easy to trap yourself in a tunnel. So ideally I should’ve taken a step back and let the edit breathe a bit before committing. Also I need to watch my exposure and ratios. The final shot (which is also the thumbnail above) the highlights are too hot and it’ll bug me forever.
3. John’s Tongue is Not Long
youtube
I had a strong urge to shoot a short so I whipped up a poem and a video idea about one of my roommates at the time, John, and his short tongue. After shooting it, I thought that the poem idea lent itself better to a song. So I enlisted the help of Chris Koehler to help put this song idea in motion. I was hoping he would take one look at the lyrics and jump at the chance to sing such glory. But alas he encouraged me to. I love singing. Alone in my car. The sing-songy genes of my ancestors were weeded out long ago. Perhaps it’s the reason why they emigrated? But I had fun and I think Chris did too. I’m stoked with how the song turned out, he killed it.
Challenges were I didn’t storyboard this or even really shot list this, just kind of went through the lyrics and shot what I thought fit. This made for a bit of problem solving in the edit but it actually wasn’t bad at all and I enjoyed making it fit.
What I learned: The idea was to shoot the first half before John went in for surgery (his wee tongue was causing him discomfort) and finish it off once he has a glorious normal length tongue. I realize now however that this doesn’t come across in the lyrics or the video. My talented director and animator buddy, Jarett Sitter provided some indispensable feedback with just one constructive comment, “I wish he had a ridiculous over-the-top tongue in the last scene.” As soon as he said it I knew I dun goofed.
One of my screenwriting profs said the ending has to be worth the price of admission. (paraphrased, he actually said the ending has to be the best part of the story to make it worth it. i.e. shit ending = shit story). Rewatching my own work is tough but it’s the best way to learn, and when I watch this I realize there’s no click at the end, no spice that holds the rest of it together. Adding in something over-the-top like that would’ve made it a lot more effective as a whole and would’ve fit with the style of the video no problem. So the lesson here, no matter how silly your project you set out to make, consult with friends and revise the script a few times before setting it in stone, you’ll get a better product at the end.
4. GRIT
Tumblr media
GRIT is a non-prof that educates kindergarten-age children with disabilities. They requested a slideshow be created so it could be played at their annual gala. Me not settling for just an average slideshow decided to give it a little flair.
Challenges were the flair. I used a fairly common plugin for After Effects (AE) called SureTarget, and needless to say I ran into some problems. I love Video Copilot. They’re a fantastic resource and their plugins are great. So I’m not going to complain about a free, 7 year old plugin. But I will tell you of my tribulations. I’ve used the plugin with success a few times before, but it was used on older versions of AE. It was also used with fewer pictures. This video required about 80 photos/clips to be used, which was also another challenge to try and fit that within the allotted time. I believe the combination of debatable-compatibility with the newer version of AE and the sheer amount of assets proved a nightmare. I don’t even want to look back at how many hours I spent trying to fix the weirdest issues both in animating and rendering. It was too many for what should’ve been a relatively straightforward project.
What I learned: Sometimes you just learn in the middle of production that something just doesn’t work. Due to my stubbornness I refused to demote the slideshow to a generic (worse) program to deliver something. I problem solved and problem solved to find a solution that worked. However, I have put the plugin to rest for good now. It was a good sendoff as I was tired of using it anyway.
5. Phantasmagoria
Tumblr media
I got the chance to work with Tia Halliday, a local artist, in capturing video of her project, Phantasmagoria. The idea behind it was to explore the relationship of the body to sculpture and painting. The scope of the project was impressive: using dancers from Alberta Ballet to contort their bodies and hold positions inside fabric sacks to be photographed digitally and with a medium format film camera, both in studio and on location outside.
Challenges were I haven’t done much in the way of abstract video or at least capturing abstract art. So getting myself well-versed and acquainted with the project was the first step. The rest fell into place in the weeks leading up and on the day.
What I learned: this was a combination of behind the scenes videography and capturing the imagery first-hand so it was good experience being able to shoot both.
6. Cancer Crusher Flash Mob
Tumblr media
This was a short social-media-focused piece. It was relatively straightforward, and fun since I didn’t know exactly what to expect until it was happening.
Challenges the lens I used is not my favourite but it’s versatile for fast-paced shoots like this, it’s just a pain in the ass to pull focus on, and my hope is to invest in a better zoom eventually. During this shoot I felt like a hummingbird with all the people and action going on, that for a couple shots I cursed at myself in the edit because I didn’t hold frame long enough and missed context because of it.
What I learned: For fast fly-by-seat-of-pants shoots, just need to remember to breathe a beat or two longer on shots.
7. Cancer Crusher 2016 Main Event Recap
vimeo
This was the main event for Cancer Crusher where you could win prizes, eat, drink, listen to music, and smash fruit! This was a blast to shoot and I had a great time putting it together.
Challenges were not much different from other event videography gigs. Smaller venues can be a little more challenging to get the shot but there was time to get everything I felt I needed to. As always music is a challenge to find. I think I found something that captured the fun spirit with it hopefully not being too stock music-y.
What I learned: it’s always great to stretch the videography muscles so just getting more experience is always welcome.
8. Sally Shapiro - If You Ever Wanna Change Your Mind
youtube
Directed by the aforementioned Jarett Sitter, this music video was fun and a very rewarding challenge to work on. It combined 3D assets - both still and animated, and 2D illustration and animation. My job was editing the video and combining those two sources to make them come alive.
Challenges were obvious. It was a fairly large-scale project in terms of scope (3D animation combined with illustration) and size (it’s a long song). 3D animation is a very time intensive process on the back-end especially, so if there are any changes, you have to prepare for hours (days) of rendering time. Due to the size of the project, the 3D guru, Evan, Jarett and I had to work simultaneously (picture us sprinting across a canyon, where one person is laying down slats and the other two are tying rope, trying to build the bridge as we go). So while consultations were frequent, the nature of it was generally only the big picture could really get nailed down. Figuring out an efficient workflow was key to the success of this project.
What I learned: I love compositing so getting a chance to get some more experience doing it was great. It was very rewarding coming up with solutions to the challenges some parts offered.
9, 10, 11, 12, 13. Lost Twentysomething Series
Tumblr media
Last year I finished shooting five shorts that have been an absolutely labour of love. These have consumed my headspace for the past year, but it has been such an invaluable experience both personally and educationally. I’m pumped to see them coming together. Braden Paes along with my friends and family have helped me immensely in getting them produced. There have been challenges and tons of learning opportunities and in the coming weeks/months I’ll post more about them. In the meantime, I am steadily chipping away at them in post, hoping to have something to show in the early summer.
BONUS 14, 15, 16. Escape, Trillium, and Shasta Keychains
Tumblr media
My dad’s little business, Camping Treasures is growing in inventory every month! The past year he needed me to draw out the dieline for three different trailers, the Escape, Trillium, and Shasta, so they could be made into 2-sided keychains. The designs have even been shrunk for wine glass charms and earrings. Take a look!
Conclusion
I haven’t written something this long since graduating university, but aside from shaking the rust off, my motivation for writing these is mainly self-serving. Overall I think I’m a patient guy but I often catch myself feeling like I’m in a rush, that I’m not progressing as much or as fast as I’d like, so I like looking back to reassure myself that I have been staying on track, learning, and applying what I’ve learned previously.
If you managed to get through it all, I sincerely hope that it maybe helped you do that thing you want to do or allowed you time to reflect on your own progress over the past year. What are you proud of? What challenges have you overcome and what have you learned from those challenges? Post in the comments or keep them in mind as you crush 2017!
I have started a new career this year which leaves me with less free time (except for right now), so instead of looking at quantity of projects finished, I’m going to be celebrating and looking at the smaller victories over the year.

Chris Brown finds “F.A.M.E” By Chantel C. Embers
Over the last few years, Chris Brown has been nothing less than a public relations nightmare.
At first it was all of the controversy surrounding his domestic battery case for assaulting his ex-girlfriend Rihanna.
Then, he caught a lot of heat for going on a homophobic rant during an argument on Twitter.
Radio stations had just begun to put his music back into regular rotation when he decided to throw a temper tantrum on the set of “Good Morning America.” However, the immense amount of talent Brown showcases on his latest album, “F.A.M.E,” proves he is still a force to be reckoned with in the music industry.
Brown declared “F.A.M.E” stands for “fans are my everything.” The album debuted at number 1 of the Billboard charts and serves up a plate of perfectly blended musical genres. It effortlessly transitions from gritty hip hop tracks like “Look at Me Now,” to infectious dance tracks like “Yeah 3X,” as well as radio friendly pop tracks like “Next 2 You” which features Justin Bieber.
Thanks to Brown, many people have found themselves humming to the catchy and melodic chorus of his hit song “Duces.” He even samples Michael Jackson’s “Human Nature” on his latest single “She Ain’t You.”
“F.A.M.E” also features appearances from Ludacris, Lil Wayne, Busta Rhymes, Tyga, Kevin McCall and Benny Benassi.
Brown’s voice is never overbearing or overshadowed by the heavy bass and 808’s heard throughout the album.
His versatile voice is soothing and hypnotizing on ballads like “Up to You” and “All Back,” but also vibrant and striking enough to shine through on up tempos such as “Say it With Me” and the newly popular “Beautiful People.”
On the mid tempo “Should’ve Kissed You,” Brown expresses his frustration with not being fearless enough to share his feelings with someone he has a crush on. He switches things up when he raps and sings on the dance track “Oh My Love,” a song very reminiscent of the style of music the Black Eye Peas are known for releasing.
“F.A.M.E” goes back and forth between light-hearted and innocent lyrics to more explicit adult content. Brown sings about dancing, partying and having fun, as well as being in love, falling out of love and everything in between.
Surprisingly, he steers away from addressing any of his most recent personal experiences on this album. So listeners expecting to gain insight to some of his erratic behavior will come up empty. Still, “F.A.M.E.” is so jam packed with feel good music it is easy to forget about all of his controversy. Unlike the Usher’s and the Beyonce’s who sometimes come off as unauthentic and contrived, Brown convincingly delivers an effortlessly eclectic album.
“F.A.M.E” by Chris Brown receives an 8 out of 10.
