I call it the HOA busybody phenomenon where people wanting to feel as if they are helping a political cause become the equivalent of the HOA measuring and harassing folks over the height of the grass in people’s lawns.
Like I get that you feel powerless and are seeking agency. But checking everyone in your vicinity over ticky tack shit over things that are poorly organized and communicated is just weird and I want people to have some perspective and some sense of tactics.

Florida tomato harvesters are still paid by the piece. The average piece rate today is 50 cents for every 32-lbs of tomatoes they pick, a rate that has remained virtually unchanged since 1980. As a result of that stagnation, a worker today must pick more than 2.25 tons of tomatoes to earn minimum wage in a typical 10-hour workday — nearly twice the amount a worker had to pick to earn minimum wage thirty years ago, when the rate was 40 cents per bucket. Most farmworkers today earn less than $12,000 a year.

Note
The Coalition of Immokalee Workers has put out a boycott on Wendy's until they sign a Fair Food Agreement, which all of their big competitors have signed. CIW is *still* busting tomato farms for using slave labor, and the FFAs put a premium on tomatoes which goes to peer-to-peer education for farm workers on combating their own exploitation. Boycott Wendy's!
Ah good to know!
Of the five largest fast food corporations in the country — McDonald’s, Subway, Burger King, Taco Bell (Yum! Brands), and Wendy’s — Wendy’s stands alone as the only one who has refused to join the Fair Food Program and respect the rights and dignity of farmworkers in its supply chain.

There seems to be a real issue in books about contemporary social struggles written by American authors in the 2000s in that they all seem to storify the research process that went into writing them and the characters that are part of them. They're all weirdly autobiographical. Like in Susan L Marquis' book about the Coalition of Immokalee Workers includes little vingettes about approaching Immokalee or meeting the characters of the book for the first time; Dana Frank's book about the anti-coup resistance in Honduras opens each chapter talking about the car rides she had with various social movement leaders and interjects with how she found out about certain events via text messages from those affected. It's a little more forgiveable for Frank's as she was an active part of the solidarity movement with the anti-coup resistance, and her book is partly a memoir of that experience, but it is annoying when you're looking for objective histories of these processes. Like Marquis' account (who used to do research primarily for the US military before weirdly pivoting towards the CIW, bizarre) is one of the more complete histories of the CIW that I am aware of, but it feels saccharine and unobjective given the unwarranted personalisation of the text. It's hard to skip these bits too as often you'll try to and then find key bits of information are hidden within. It's not so much an issue with more historical books, as these movements are long gone and therefore it is easier (or rather hard not to be) given you are limited to a set of historical sources you are interpreting, but I saw the same kind of personalised writing style in Hammer and Hoe as well. Always struck me as a little strange

Dec. 30 (UPI) -- The owner of a Florida-based farmworker company has been sentenced to 118 months in prison on racketeering and forced-labor conspiracy charges.
U.S. District Court Judge Charlene Edward Honeywell of the Middle District of Florida sentenced Bladimir Moreno, 55, Thursday and ordered him to pay more than $175,000 in restitution to the victims, all of whom were Mexican H-2A agricultural workers between 2015 and 2017.
According to court documents, Moreno owned and operated Los Villatoros Harvesting, a farm-labor contracting company that employed Mexican workers on H-2A agricultural visas. Authorities say that once the farmworkers arrived in the United States, Moreno used false promises and coercion to compel the workers to labor under harsh conditions in Florida, Kentucky, Indiana, Georgia and North Carolina.
Authorities say Moreno and his co-conspirators coerced H-2A agricultural workers by imposing debts on them, confiscating their passports and keeping them in the United States after their visas had expired. He also forced workers into "crowded, unsanitary and degrading living conditions" and threatened workers with arrest and deportation if they didn't meet his demands.
RELATED Gov. Newsom signs bill expanding union rights for farmworkers
Federal investigators say Moreno also gave investigators fraudulent worker records during their probe of operations at Los Villatoros Harvesting.
"This defendant abused his power as a business owner to capitalize on the victims' vulnerabilities and immigration status, luring those seeking a better quality of life with false promises of lawful work paying a fair wage," said Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke of the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division. "The defendant forced Mexican agricultural workers to labor under inhumane conditions, confiscated their passports, imposed exorbitant fees and debts, and threatened them with deportation or false arrest."
Justice Department officials charged Moreno in 2021, and he pleaded guilty earlier this year to conspiracy under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, as well as conspiracy to commit forced labor. Two of his co-defendants previously pleaded guilty to conspiracy under the RICO Act and previously were sentenced in October. Christina Gamez, a U.S. citizen who worked for Los Villatoros Harvesting as a bookkeeper and supervisor, was sentenced to 37 months in prison. Guadalupe Mendes Mendoza, 45, pleaded guilty to conspiring to obstruct a federal investigation and was sentenced to eight months of home detention and a $5,500 fine.
RELATED Supreme Court rules against unions organizing on California farms
The Palm Beach County, Fla., Human Trafficking Task Force and the county's Sheriff's Office investigated the case with help from multiple Department of Labor investigators and worker-rights organizations. The Florida-based Coalition of Immokalee Workers said it assisted federal investigators after two workers escaped from their employers' control by hiding in the trunk of a car and escaping to seek help.
"Forcing individuals to work against their will using abusive and coercive tactics is not only unconscionable but illegal," said U.S. Attorney Roger Handberg for the Middle District of Florida. "We will continue to work with our task force partners to combat human trafficking in all its forms, including prosecuting those who exploit vulnerable workers."
Anyone with information about human trafficking can report it to the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-888-373-7888.

LCEC is working to restore power across Lee County, with Marco Island, Immokalee, Lehigh Acres and Carnestown being the ones closest to being finished up on power restored.
North Fort Myers still has a ways to go, and Cape Coral ESPECIALLY has a long way to go.
No update on Pine Island or Sanibel.
The Sanibel Causeway is destroyed. No way on or off the island, save by boat or helicopter.
Tumblr media
Again, I'm in the Cape Coral area...
They are kinda working at a snail's pace...
I hope once the teams finish up in the other areas they might send them down to help out in the other areas.
