So I haven’t painted anything in 3 years and I got the urge two days ago so I unearthed all my neglected supplies.
Watercolour is my go-to medium, but they’d all dried out beyond return, so I ordered new ones and used some forgotten acrylics I’d found.
My therapist is insistent that I try new creative outlets - particularly ones I’m not good at - to test my limits with perfectionism and executive dysfunction, which, like… okay it is helping a lot, actually, but does it have to feel so uncomfortable the whole time?
So I’m there painting last night and I’m seeing a new beauty to acrylics and how they don’t blend the same way, they can be so much more precise etc., and I’m now really into the acrylics scene. Meanwhile, I’m currently waiting for my watercolour paint delivery and I’m concerned I’m about to neglect them a whole second time ‘cause I got myself a new acrylic fixation.
Then there’s the added issue of trying to fit this new venture into the limited time left around all my other hobbies (writing, reading, piano, singing, and calligraphy, if anyone’s interested) which feels pretty daunting.
But then I realise; somewhere between taking up this ridiculous amount of hobbies and now, Ive become too preoccupied with the possibilities of my day to remember to worry about the quality of my work.
My mindset has shifted from ‘I’m scared to start this because what if it’s bad?’, to ‘I can’t wait to see what I make today!’ and I didn’t even notice the change.
The things I’m creating might be mostly crap, but I am creating a lot of stuff. More importantly, I’m enjoying the process. And one day the stuff I make will be good, like, really good. And they will never get the chance to exist if I don’t make all these lesser versions first.
I mean, now I have the too many things, too little time conundrum, and I have amassed more terrible paintings than I know what to do with, more badly-played songs than I can remember, and learning calligraphy left-handed is like fighting an uphill battle, but it’s a much more pleasant issue to have than being terrified into inaction.
The point I’m making is:
If you’re fortunate enough to have a good one, listen to your therapist.

If you don't mind me asking. What book or resources would you recommend to the modern occult novice?
I am currently reading and following Shoemakers Living Thelema.
Shoemaker's Living Thelema is a good book, The Aleister Crowley Manual by Marco Visconti is also a good introduction to Thelema and ritual magic, there are lots of diagrams too.
Anything by Lon Milo DuQuette should be consumed by beginners, he is one of my favourite authors to recommend because 1) He's one of the oldest living Thelemites, 2) He has a great sense of humour, and 3) He has actually done the work and lived the life.
The Complete Book of Ceremonial Magick published by llewellyn edited by Shoemaker and DuQuette is essentially an overview of the Western Mystery Tradition and each section lists recommended reading for you to research further. Again, this is a good all round introduction to the subject and I would personally start here.
Those should be enough to get you started and keep you occupied for a few months.

Astral Travel Beginners Class
Ok so to start off this is teaching from experience Wich means entirely based on who you are and what's going on it may or may not work for you.
That being said, here's what I do to astral project and how I know I did. As well as the foundations of my practice
Blue words will have explanations or sources on how to accomplish the task or what it even is, some times both. If you want to just skip what I have to say and use the sources to build your own form be my guest!
Basic fundamental beliefs for this to work
Everything has energy
Energy cannot be destroyed or created only repurposed (law of conservation of energy)
There is something bigger guiding us ie universe, gods, etc; some one something out there exists
The meridian lines exist as to energy points in the body
You can astral travel
Belife in basic science
So step one is to body scan, Wich is basically to me...you sit down and do some breathwork listen to your gut/intuition/inner guidance and see with your minds eye what you're feeling, where, and why?
Let's start with
Breathwork
I use an app called breathe hold breathe or listen to YouTube videos personally I find this helps me move forward with my eyes shut as I listen to audio cues to breathe or hold.
Warning! Start from the beginning do not jump into breathe of fire you could seriously injure yourself if you don't have strong enough lungs or the right guidance ie triggering panic attacks or asthma
Getting in touch with gut/inner guidance
How I do this myself is usually eft, yoga, sound bowls (beforehand prep) or I spend more time with my spiritual family by making offerings, writing letters, or using divination to chat. (As well as studying them and researching the Grek Pantheon, I feel closer to them that way, so try to do what makes you feel more connected to your spiritual team or your higher self/ inner self)
Seeing with the minds eye.
Something I'll usually always reference for beginners is practicing the apple test for Aphantasia. Practicing visualization methods and working your mental muscles is a great way to begin prep for astral travel.
and remember it doesn't take more than a couple minutes so you can do a warm up before even sitting down for the body scan.
The Body Scan
After youre finished with your prep wether you feel it or not, press on to the next step, the body scan.
You could be stuck in a rut that the body scan will free you from once you find the source of your stress and or restrictions.
Short list of questions I'll ask during a body scan.
Where do I feel this? (Pinpointing the location of where the energy stems from)
What am I feeling? (Light, tingly, heavy, hurting, happy, sad, all possible descriptors, an emotion or a sense)
Why do I feel this (this one's harder to if you get stuck on it, try EFT (emotional freedome technique) or Yoga before continuing. This is to open the meridian lines in your body and get energy flowing)
Usually after all the prep I'm ready to go so...
Once you do the body scan and all the pre requisites, you ley or sit down in a safe comfortable place and imo you should follow a guided meditation like this one to start!
Then move on to wordless meditation music (pace yourself and start with 5 not 10 minutes if need be, that's where I began) using things like sound bowls or Shamanic drums if you want something more intense.
(Warning that drumming can be very effective but not really for beginners, still it doesn't take long once you learn the basics so shoot your shot if you feel pulled to it)
You also want to keep in mind that having a spiritual team prior to doing this is a good idea for protection against whatever is out there. Though if course you can ward yourself. You at least want some energetic line or connection be it elemental or divine or something else! Just be sure it's spiritual in nature because for this to work you combine spiritual, physical, and mental worlds before crossing them.
Now this meathod is also based in science so I have a lot more confidence going in, that's kinda the point of it is that you have the confidence to believe it. And if you don't have the confidence to believe anything anymore or maybe you confidently believe in nothing, I'd suggest a philosophy class, that's what I did to get out of my spiritual rut and what I am doing now (thanks to Lord Zeus and My Beloved @discountprophet )
If you want to verify that what you did or saw was real, then study. Study by researching what's around you by looking up your questions by double checking sources, I'm giving you some today to look into so you can launch off on your own here and now.
You have to find what YOU believe or none of it will work because you'll be doubting it the entire time. Or maybe you'll visualize, maybe you'll travel but you'll do so lopsided and constantly questioning every step of the way. Take it from me that's not fun. Or you go lopsided in the other direction and never leave the first layer ie you never leave your headspace because you're too focused on what your minds eye is seeing when your minds eye should be treated as a tool not a crutch.
You can also use divination such as scrying, tarot or bone tossing, etc. To clear up information and get more reassurance after you've done the work.

Commission for Absoladi_art on insta!
Neon lights glistened as rain poured down onto the city streets. A small group of people took shelter under a local bridge. Noelani sobbed softly to herself, a needle in her hand aimed toward her shoulder. A half dozen more strewn about by her feet. None of the others around her seemed to care. She pressed the plunger in and felt the cold liquid ease into arm and slowly dispersed. After a moment, she felt a kick, and she began to lose her vision. She leaned back and closed her eyes, accepting her fate. In her last moments she could feel arms reaching around to grab her as if angels themselves were bringing her to the afterlife.
Eventually, she could feel life again. Blaring lights burned her eyes through her closed eyelids. She opened her eyes to find no afterlife, no pearly white gates, and no holy beings waiting to take her to the next life. Doctors and machinery surrounded her, beeping and medical jargon filled her ears. She tried to struggle, but felt her extremities bound tightly to the table she laid on. She continued to writhe and began to try to scream, but she found nothing would come out. She continued to struggle. A few doctors noticed her and ran to the bedside, grabbing her arms and legs and holding her down.
Noelani began to panic, with no way to protest and no way to fight back the doctors had full control over her. Then a buzzing noise rang out, drowning all other noise in the room. As the room filled with noise she felt a sharp sting on her calf. She tried to resist to no avail. The pain persisted, reaching the threshold of unbearability. The pain shifted down from her upper calf to her ankle. By now her whole leg was burning, it was as if someone had shoved a hot blade lengthwise up her leg. Then she felt a thud on the table. She couldn’t see what was happening, but she felt it. She could feel as parts of her calf were stripped away and parts were added on. She tried to scream. She tried to shout. She tried to fight. She tried to run. But nothing worked. She was at the mercy of these unknown doctors.
Noelani was unsure of how she was even awake. The pain was so grueling she began to vomit behind her gag. Someone hunched over her and shoved a tub down her throat to suck out the liquid. Tears streamed down her face in a torrent. These people ripped open her legs, cut and sliced and tore and mutilated. She felt every little incision, every little break, every little thing. Yet for some god forsaken reason she was still aware of it. She eventually lost feeling in her legs. The tears dried onto her face, her eyes unable to cry anymore. She stared into the eyes of the men and women around her, they all avoided her gaze as yet another machine moved toward her. Another loud buzzing began to ring into the room and the same pain Noelani knew all too well drove into her chest like a freight train. With this, the final nail in the coffin was struck, she felt her consciousness drain from her body.
Noelani woke up in a daze. She felt like she was floating for a moment. Looking around she saw she was no longer in the operating room. It looked like the backroom at a zoo where the handlers prepared for a show. As she sighed a plume of bubbles appeared in front of her face. She opened her eyes a bit more to see she was suspended in a vat of water, tubes and wires poking and prodding her skin. She began to thrash around, knocking some of the tubing out of her skin and rubbing some of the wires off.
Doctors rushed in and opened the tank, reaching in to try and stop her. But Noelani took this opportunity to try and get out of the tank. She was able to overpower the doctors easily, considering they had to stretch to even reach the latch. She threw herself to the grounding and tried to get up to run but her legs felt numb, like they weren’t even there at all. She turned to see the group of doctors running toward her. Without any control of her legs she tried to crawl away before feeling the sharp pain of someone's boot pressing into her lower body.
Noelani turned to see a man in a red suit standing over her. She looked toward his boot to see the unthinkable. She had no legs at all. They had been replaced by what looked like a mechanical mermaid's tail. “What the fuck is wrong with you people” she muttered, tears beginning to bellow in her eyes.
The man in the red suit crouched down beside her, “you should be more concerned with what's no longer wrong with you my dear,” he whispered in a thick accent Noelani didn’t recognize.
“W-what do you mean? What did you do to me?!” she cried before taking a weak swing at the man.
He simply leaned back to dodge the blow, “we turned you from a rat on the street,” he said, pulling his face close to hers and aggressively grabbing her chin, “and turned you into one of the greatest technological advances of our generation.”
Noelani found herself short of breath, “how could you do this to someone else!” she strained to shout, “I may have been a nobody but I’m still a person!” she wailed.
The man in the red suit checked his watch, “you may want to be careful darling,” he said standing up, “it may be hard to breathe soon because… well you’re better suited for water now.” He chuckled as he turned to walk away. Noelani tried to scream but, as the man predicted, she was struggling to breathe. She flailed about wildly on the floor, begging for help, until someone finally came and placed her back in the container. She was nothing more than a pet fish in a tank now.
