Just found out from @1800ineedshelp that Forks was not a fictional town made up for Twilight. First Albania, then Transylvania, now this. Next y'all will tell me that SoHo is real.
That was a joke. I know SoHo is real. Because of Good Omens.
Before Good Omens, I thought SoHo was a clothing brand. That sold... boho chic clothes or something. Please don't tell me Boho is a place, too.

i knwo im sleep deprived as hell because i just had a sudden conviction to invent a distinction between smps-in-videos and smps-as-played-by-real-people a la c! and cc! distinction. i think if we are going to keep using c! and cc! we should also do the same to our entire concept of "the server"

There’s this post going around about convincing conservatives to support trains by painting cars as “an attack on traditional transport” (I don’t remember it exactly, but they specifically used the words attack on traditional something)
Mostly people were taking it as a joke, or pointing out how this could be also be used to convince people of conservative goals and to read carefully when it comes to inclusive or sustainable language (like pinkwashing or certain ideologies related to overpopulation)
But I saw one argument that it was useful because “if your politics can only convince people who already agree with you it’s not useful” and while I agree you should tailor your arguments to tie audience, using “attack on tradition” specifically feels odd. (This argument was in response to someone mentioning the issues a rail system organized by people with that mindset would have)
I guess I’d like to know what you think about it, since I’m not very knowledgeable when it comes to politics.
I believe you’re talking about this post:
Tumblr media
If you wanted to take this screenshot seriously I think it’s a pretty bad way to convince people of your own political beliefs and goals, because you’re not actually convincing them of anything lol. There is a difference between tailoring your arguments to your audience or meeting people where they are versus adopting the framework of your political enemies to make your own goals appear to align with their own. You have not actually convinced conservatives that public transit is good for the reasons it is actually good (the reasons public transit is good is diametrically opposed to their beliefs), you have only convinced them that public transit can fit under a conservative policy framework. Well conservative policies are disgusting! They are hostile to human life, they make the world a worse place to live in. The crux of the argument being made here is that ‘traditional society’ is something worth protecting, and public transit is an avenue through which this protection can be done. I think if you are conceding this much rhetorical and political ground to your enemy to make them ‘agree’ with you, you’re not being savvy or politically strategic, you are just making conservative arguments. The problem is that traditional society is a vile concept and no policy should rest on that kind of foundation. The way you frame a problem determines the potential solution outcomes; the solution being championed here is not that more public transit solves a host of pressing social problems (increased accessibility and mobility for disabled people, the elderly, children, and the poor, reducing/resolving congestion and traffic issues that plague every urban centre, vastly reducing the amount of deaths related to vehicle collisions for both pedestrians and drivers, reducing carbon emissions produced by vehicles, the list is effectively endless), but that ‘traditional society’ can be saved using public transit - this traditional society being built by white supremacist and cishetero-patriarchal politics, a system of explicit racial and gendered hierarchy and inequality, conservative cultural ideas about struggle, rugged individualism, the strong dominating the weak, and so on. You’re just making a conservative argument!
The whole liberal fantasy surrounding debates is that politics is primarily a game of rhetoric where ideas clash for dominance and the best ideas win. If you can’t even convince someone of your own political goals on your own terms using your own ideas - or worse, your political goals are so modular and vague that you believe using fascist concepts like ‘protecting traditional society’ is a productive vehicle for getting what you want - you are at best useless and at worst part of the problem. In either case I don’t think it’s effective or worth your time, you’re literally just increasing the amount of conservative arguments that exist in the world, and if you believe otherwise you’re either an idiot or you’re dangerous

I was looking at both the map of Xadia and the Aaravos history clips from S4 because of @raayllum's excellent catch regarding the giant shell and wanting to see if it appeared anywhere else, and... in case there was any doubt that the entire Sea of the Castout was created specifically to be Aaravos's prison:
Tumblr media
Comparison of the human war table map and the modern map of Xadia, with the following marked:
Red: war table map markers (unclear atm what they are meant to indicate, but presumably strategic points of interest or enemy forces locations)
Blue: rivers that exist in both pre- and post-imprisonment Xadia
Green: rivers and inland sea that did not exist in pre-imprisonment Xadia
Magenta: site of Elarion
Couple things of note from this:
there are five new rivers that form the Sea of the Castout, and, probably not coincidentally, there are also five primal sources excluding Star
the new southwest river very deliberately goes around the ruins of Elarion, leaving them undisturbed
now that I think about it, it's possible given the position of Elarion that Ziard's confrontation with Sol Regem took place at the same site as Aaravos's prison, which would be *chef's kiss*
the far south war map marker reinforces my belief that Ocean Point is called out on the map with a little star/sparkle marker for a reason
put F in the chat for whoever was living in that area when they filled it with water jail

working on my lecture for thursday (i can’t believe i have to lecture in this class) and therefore reviewing the readings more thoroughly than i have in a while. and like: damn, i did a good job. combining extracts from different textbooks was a really good idea. does make life harder, but i think this is a pretty kickass “what is geography anyway” introduction in only 20 pages of material

I'm thinking about the possibilities of Merfolk biology as if I was some nosy ass researcher.
Much like the varied life of the sea, Merfolk come in all shapes and sizes, ranging from the smallest recorded, about a foot tall (though he was adamant he was 1'2"), to just larger than a whale shark. There's rumors there are much larger Merfolk somewhere out in open ocean, but this hasn't been unanimously proven, and even Merfolk will tell you it could just be folklore. If true, such Merfolk tend to live in waters far below what a human can reach.
Merfolk also come in a variety of colors, fin types, and patterns, showcasing many similarities to other types of fish (shark-like fins and anglers atop their heads, for example). Similar biological functions are also noted, such as the presence of a lateral line, operculum, and swim bladder.
Although they can't live indefinitely away from water, they're regarded as semi-aquatic, and perfectly capable of breathing on land (as both lung and gill breathers?). Prolonged time out of water will result in dried skin, which is smooth, similar to a Catfish.
All Merfolk have a set of fins framing the sides of their face, and some have them on their arms, legs, heads, and backs. The fins framing their face are used for emoting, balance while swimming, making themselves seems larger to deter predators, and generally making themselves look attractive. Drooping fins are a sign of illness or general upset, usually.
Merfolk are omnivorous, and their diet isn't very restrictive. Whether they cook their food or not is up to personal preference. Some will gather food from islands or passing fishing boats. Or wherever else they can find it. The waters are full of fish, which means their food source is never scarce, but who doesn't like a bit of variety now and again.
The Merfolk are a magical people, and one with a great variety of folklore surrounding them. Some call them tricksters trying to lure you into demise. Other's still believe they are benevolent beings saving those wrecked at sea. (Our source for this information told us, "We're not all the same fish, are we? We're multi-faceted. Whole bunch of different people. Now mind you're business and go away, yeah?" So that was the end of our interview).

The burger poll reminded me of the reason why I struggle giving Takouji a kid. Would the bby starve? Who would cook for them? Takuya should seriously hire a butler or some private cook, which wouldn’t be a problem since he will be certainly rich, but he would get to that decision after having put the kitchen on fire with Kouji and having given the kid A THRAUMA🤣.
So many times, when both Dads are miracolously home, they will promise each other they will manage to cook something good for the bby, but they will end up fighting over who can cook the best meal and will forget about feeding the kid.
Probably, bby would be independent enough to call Zia Cook Izumi or Zio Junpei and order some pasta or pizza from the restaurant. What a pity in my hc Takouji live in Rome, Junzumi in Milan but Izumi can make those two behave by just yelling at them on the phone, I’m sure🤣.
