today im thinking about malaria in ancient rome.

about the fact that P. falciparum (the most dangerous kind of malaria) was likely endemic at least from the 2nd century BC onward that Galen said semitertian fevers (P. falciparum infections) were more common in Rome than anywhere else in the Roman Empire that the most severe manifestations of P. falciparum (quotidian fevers + cerebral malaria) were most common in babies and young children, an epidemiological observation that indicates the transmission rate of P. falciparum was extremely high in Rome that Quintus Serenus said there was no Latin word for semitertian fevers (they used a transliteration of the Greek, 'hemitritaeos') because "no one, i think, could have named it in our language and mothers would not have wanted to"

#working on my thesis gonna bring down the mood of the whole department #but i feel like i have to honor them #and the thing about malaria that fucks me up is P. falciparum has been around for tens of thousands of years #its not a disease of agriculture like smallpox or of sanitary issues that come with civilization like typhoid #it predates agriculture its been found in the bodies of mummies from ancient egypt and skeletons from ancient greece and rome #there are species-specific plasmodium parasites for gorrillas chimpanzees and humans #which to me indicates there was a plasmodium parasite for every now lost hominid #malaria is the strongest recent evolutionary pressure on the human genome #upwards of 30% of people in some parts of the world are heterozygous for sickle cell anemia #or heterozygous for SE asian ovalocytosis #thus it was more evolutionarily advantageous for 2-3% of all children to die #so about 30% of people could be protected from severe malaria #these mutations take a long time to evolve. parasites take a long time to evolve #there are people who mourned their infants tens of thousands of years ago in languages we will never know with rituals we will never see #and i cant do anything about any of that but i can keep going to the lab every day and trying my best to figure it out #because so many generations of humans stretching back to before we were human could not

saw a post about Beika's ears and it reminded me of how weird they are

like look at this:

the straight edge is on the bottom while the curve is on the top

now this might not seem all that weird at first until you consider this: almost every other inkling we've seen so far doesn't have ears shaped like this

take a look at some of the idol's ears:

Frye, who is often compared with Beika in terms of appearance, has a sharper "straight" edge on the top (i'm using straight in quotations because yeah i know that it's technically curved too shut up her ears are also weird for other reasons,) and a more curved edge on the bottom.

The same can be said for the Squid Sisters, as they also have a straight edge on top, and a curved edge on the bottom.

and even with other, non-super-pointy-eared inklings, this "straight on top, curved on bottom shape" is still the most common shape, with only like, one exception.

so what does any of this mean? well...

Beika just has a unique ear shape. that's it. idk i just thought it'd be fun to point out.

Does Opal ever smile? In most of your art she has a neutral expression on her face.

She does! However, it’s very subtle, and she mostly smiles with her eyes, though she might turn up the corners of her mouth slightly. She usually doesn’t emote using her mouth much.

Opal isn’t very expressive, and that’s for many reasons. In part, it’s because she modeled her appearance off of Ark as she was developing in her egg, so she mimics his facial expressions for the most part— I draw Ark with a pretty wide array of facial expressions, but this is because I want to draw him, for the most part, how Twig sees him.

Canonically he has a very flat affect and is difficult for others to read. Over the course of The Present is a Gift, Twig learns how to read his posture and the very subtle changes in his face, and because of her familiarity with Ark she’s able to see him as being very expressive (A bonus benefit of drawing Ark like this is that people who see my art are able to tell what’s going on in his head as well, haha). I draw Opal with about the same visible range of facial expressions that Darkrai canonically has— as time goes on, she might start mimicking Twig’s expressions more and become increasingly animated, but Ark is her baseline.

Okay Star Flower but instead she’s based off Sunflowers, a flower that looks to the sun with its golden petals and dark center. Idk I feel like it connects her to One eye more. The adoption idea is actually kinda cool tho her being born by a curse is very appealing.

Sunflowers used to grow and bloom across the moors of the lake but as the cats fled and a chilly winter settled in they withered away. A single kitten born to a dead dame in the final patch of dying sunflowers scooped up by the summer deity as his daughter. She grows to have the same chaotic need to remind the cats what they did to her land and how they turned their back on her dad.

I have to veto Sunflowers, though the symbolism is marvelous. Sunflowers are exclusively a commercial crop in England and they really don't like growing up North.

But also the Ancient Lake won't have Moorland! What's now WindClan Territory was once old growth forest, the state that all Moorland returns to when not managed by humans.

It's why there's no "CheetahClan" for the big cat clans. Leopards are analagous to lake-lovers, Tigers were bog-lovers, and Lions were forest-lovers.

Btw I am actually planning something pretty cool mythologically as an explanation for why they have "words" for Tigers, Leopards, and Lions. You know what, I'm gonna go draw it now

sorry this is late, i didn't see it until now. yeah i'm ignoring canon. i figured that sticking with canon mechanics would make it really boring since the species i could use would be very limited

#i know that rule exists in the main series for gameplay reasons but here it's like. why /can't/ the offspring take after the father #i'm pretty sure canon pmd ignores this too if herdier and his grandson lillipup are any indication #they could be like wigglytuff and have the parents be the same species but for two familial generations i find that to be unlikely #the only rule from the games i'm sticking with is that they have to be in the same egg group #to keep it accurate with real life biology #though i may make an exception for pokemon in the undiscovered group if the situation ever arises #also speaking of that if anybody saw the swablu egg in my derwin amos and ava step dad art my explanation behind that despite gliscor and #altaria being in separate egg groups is that they use a ditto surrogate (full credit to my gf for that idea)
