The refusal of all but a handful of states to join the US-led coalition ‘Operation Prosperity Guardian’ to defeat Yemen in the Red Sea (notable among absentees was Saudi Arabia, which has since joined the BRICS group of nations alongside China, Russia and Iran) was telling. Increasingly, the imperialism of the Western media is being exposed, and voices from the Global South locating these lies within much longer histories of Western colonial violence are being heard in new ways, by a new generation.  In a talk he gave on October 21st, 2023, historian Ilan Pappé stated: ‘Before October I wrote an article saying this is the beginning of the end of Zionism…after last week in fact I’m even more convinced. As happened in apartheid South Africa, this is a very dangerous period. I'm trying to collect all my thoughts on the Swift/Healy breakup, and I think what it all boils down to is that it does not erase or otherwise negate all the frustration and hurt of the past few weeks.

I've said before that just breaking up wouldn't be enough to win me back, and I stand by that assessment. From what I've seen, this was not a move precipitated by the realization that Healy was a shitbag. (Because for one, the information was already out there; and for two, it lasted a little too long for that to be believable.) And my anger over them dating was never really about the act of them dating, but about Swift having the mindset of being okay with Healy and what he's done. It was a wake-up call to show that she was perfectly fine with platforming a racist, sexist, xenophobic, etc. asshole. And no, breaking up with him is not the same as denouncing those beliefs.

(I was also a recent fan -- recovering from a purity culture that thought Swift was demonic and not-like-other-girls internalized misogyny that wanted nothing to do with someone who was popular -- so I wasn't around for her earlier dubiously moral choices. I didn't know about the swastika picture, or about the O'Russell movie. But the conversation about Healy brought it to my attention, and that just adds to the list of things Swift has to answer for.)

Not only will I not be forgetting Swift's part in this crisis of faith, I will not be forgetting the fandom response. The Swiftie community is so clearly not a safe space for so many members of marginalized communities.

So unless I see actual action from Swift to denounce the beliefs she's platformed these past weeks and months and years, no, she's not gonna be forgiven in my book. I will not be streaming her music or buying merch; at this point, I'm also not going to be listening to downloaded copies or working on arrangements or whatever. I'm a bit more at peace with the ways she's influenced me and my admiration for her work, but. I dunno. Still working through things.

Anyways, yeah. I dunno how to end this. But. Yeah.

Regarding the WAGs conversation you had yesterday, I wanna bring up another toxic space in sports, Indian cricket. On one hand you have WAGs being dismissed as nothing more than spectators for their husbands' activities and the internal politics in what it means to be one.

Then there's the cesspool that is Indian cricket fanboys. Virat Kohli's wife Anushka Sharma has suffered endlessly because of them for over a decade. She's the first person the cameras point to when Virat misses a ball. She's called a bad luck charm if he loses (but not a good luck one if he wins). She's harassed by incels on social media for her and her husband's joint decision to not have their baby daughter on social media. When Virat posts about her genuinely and appreciatively, they'll come camp on his comments like a disease and accuse him of not dedicating his life ONLY to cricket.

Mind you, Anushka Sharma is an A- list Bollywood actress and producer in her own right. She was well known before him. And yet they'll throw around gold digger claims.

Granted, Kohli is not an attention seeker like Travis, he keeps his private life private and has defended his wife from his fandom several times. But still. The life of a WAG sounds genuinely stressful and upsetting and its disappointing that swifties themselves are buying into it
