It's interesting that dynamics can be applied to plots just like character archetypes.
And I think this is more visible when we move on to fandom.
As a writing exercise, you could try rewriting your favorite classic synopsis, adding your own characterization.
I think I first learned this from watching online platforms.
The various elements in a creation are listed through tagging.
I think it would be an effective workshop to create a new play based on an out-of-copyright literary work.
Who else but Shakespeare would you bring to a workshop like this?
"Works whose authors died (individually and jointly) or were published (videos) before December 31, 1962. However, even if the copyright of the original work has expired, the copyright of the translation may still be active, so be careful when using it.
Individual works are based on the date of death of the author. (In the case of a joint work, the date of death of the last person)
Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes series[9]
Works of Howard Phillips Lovecraft[10]
Works by and about[11]
Works by Francis Scott Fitzgerald[12]
Works of Ernest Hemingway[13]
Works by Hermann Hesse[14]
My Struggle - because Adolf Hitler died in 1945, copyright lapsed worldwide on December 31, 2015, 70 years later.
Almost all classic works of literature
The Analects
The Annals of Chinese History
The Romance of the Three Kingdoms
The Analects of Zhuangzi
Exhibits
Sheet music of classical music - however, recorded music does not enter the public domain until 50 years after the date of recording, as moral rights are recognized separately from copyright[15]."
Visual works are based on publication.
The Wizard of Oz
Citizen Kane
Battleship Potemkin
Metropolis
The Searchers
Revised English Bible
Seven Samurai
Modern Times
Plan 9 from Outer Space
Animated shorts from the Golden Age of American animation.
Crazy Airplane
Steamboat Willie
Looney Tunes - shorts released between 1930 and 1962
Tom and Jerry - Hanna-Barbera to Gene Deitch shorts
Winnie the Pooh
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
101 Dalmatian Dogs
You can search by the keyword public domain
Yeah I think I could go with Holmes series and add more queerness
The great Gatsby is also public domain
I think the Hemingway style of writing, famous for his six-letter novels, can help you with your first draft.
Baby shoes, for sale, never worn
Make any synopsis as six-word novel!
Yeah and TVtrope will reduce a lot of work

Fic Writer Interview
Thank you to @sapphosewrites for tagging me!
Name: Vermin
Fandoms: Currently Star Trek, and DS9 specifically has eaten my brain. But I’ve been in and out of fandom for the past 20 years, so there have been many. I’ve more often been an avid reader and lurker than an active participant, though. The last fandom I was most actively involved in (and wrote the most fic for) was Life on Mars (UK), and that was a while ago. Other fandoms have included: Good Omens, Due South, Sherlock Holmes, and of course my very first gateway fandom, Harry Potter.
Where you post: AO3 and Tumblr. You can still find a lot of my older fic posted on my LJ, although I don’t post there anymore. Every once in a blue moon I get a notification from FF.net and am momentarily reminded that I still technically have an account there (though I can’t remember the last time I used it).
Most popular one-shot: That depends on your definition of a one-shot, lol. My top fic in terms of kudos is False Friends and False Prophets, which is technically part of a series (Where No Occult [or Ethereal] Being Has Gone Before), but then again, all the works in that series are written to work as standalones while existing within a shared crossover universe. If we exclude those then the next option is Freedom’s Just Another Word, except that while that is not currently listed as part of the This Be The Verse series (for thematic reasons), it is based on a flashback in Tell Me You See Me and I do consider it part of that universe, even though it can be read independently.
So I guess my most popular indisputable one-shot would be my first Garak/Bashir fic, Bound in Shallows and in Miseries.
Most popular multichapter: Tell Me You See Me (not that I have a lot to choose from)
Favorite story you’ve written so far: This was more difficult than I expected! Here are the ones that particularly stand out in my mind:
Tin Star (Life on Mars, 2009): Not counting a few drabbles, this was my second work for LoM. The first one, Convergence, is from the POV of a character who doesn’t appear onscreen in canon (and probably doesn’t exist), so Tin Star was my first real attempt at writing the POV of one main cast. I found the idea of writing Gene Hunt pretty intimidating, and was (and still am) very pleased with how this came out. Also, my favorite LoM writer, @lozenger8, beta-read it and told me it was awesome, and 11 years later I still feel all warm and fuzzy about this.
Mater Familias (I, Claudius, 2009): My first and longest work of I, Claudius fanfiction, written for a once annual ficathon on LJ called Femgenficathon (shoutout to @gehayi who modded it - it was a great event). I’m not entirely sure why I landed on this particular idea. I’d been joking about writing IC fic for years, but if you’d asked me prior to writing this what characters I’d most like to write about, Antonia the Younger wouldn’t have been high on the list. But once the idea occurred to me, I really relished delving into Antonia’s psyche. I’m also fond of this fic because there’s so little IC fic out there, and I’m rather pleased to have contributed something. (There was a point a few years ago when there were 6 works of I, Claudius fic on AO3 and 4 of them were by me.)
On the Benefits of a Classical Education (Jeeves & Wooster, 2012) – To quote my author’s note: “at about 1:00 a.m. after a round of grading undergraduate papers, I reached that point of giddy insanity where the idea of writing one's grading comments in Wodehousian pastiche seems like basically the funniest thing, ever. My coping mechanisms, let me show you them.” This is definitely one of the weirdest and silliest things I’ve written, but it still makes me grin when I reread it. (Yes, I do laugh at my own jokes.)
On Transmutation [and Tortoises] (Good Omens, 2011): As someone who has studied (and now teaches) evolutionary theory, I got a big kick out of writing about evolution in a universe where creationism is canon. Not to mention telling jokes about Darwin riding tortoises. (I make a point of reading that particular passage in The Voyage of the Beagle to my students.) And I owe @anthean some credit for giving me the prompt that produced this. :)
Writ in Water (Sherlock Holmes [ACD], 2015): This is essentially an interplay between two brilliant people trying to suss each other out while avoiding talking about their own respective existential crises. There’s no romance between them – it’s just Sherlock Holmes and Irene Adler having a meandering conversation while meandering around Rome, after an accidental meeting during the Great Hiatus. My characterization of Irene Adler came out of my dissatisfaction with her characterization in recent adaptations. I think I started c. 2011, and I didn’t finish it until years later. There’s a lot of self-indulgence in this one. I majored in Classic Civ and spent a semester abroad in Rome, and my love for the city is pretty evident throughout. It’s littered with references to ancient history, there’s some gratuitous poetry, and the climax is set in the Protestant Cemetery, which is one of my favorite places in the city.
I honestly think it’s one of the best things I’ve ever written.
This Be The Verse (Star Trek: DS9, 2020): This fic is about my strained relationship with kidfic as a genre lol. I periodically get the urge to binge-read all the kidfic for a particular fandom/pairing, but then I usually end up being disappointed by most of it. So this started with me idly contemplating why kidfic often doesn’t work for me (and why I keep reading it anyway). And because of my current fandom preoccupation, this inevitably involved taking a hard look at the delightfully dysfunctional DS9 cast and wondering just what sort of parents they would be, and how their flaws might affect their children, and how the found family aspects of the show might manifest in the next generation. (Not sure how all this idle speculation ended up spiraling so wildly out of control, but here we are, and now I am just overflowing with ideas for this universe.)
I’m not 100% satisfied with all of this fic, but the epilogue is definitely one of my favorite things I’ve ever written. It also has a special place in my heart for being the first multichapter fic I’ve ever finished. (And the first one I’ve posted since I was in high school.)
Fics you were nervous to post: I used to get nervous about all of it (less so, these days). But one of the ones I was most nervous about was probably Convergence, which was my first substantial work in Life on Mars (I’d only written a couple of drabbles prior to this). I was really nervous about writing for LoM, because the setting and the dialogue style were pretty far outside my wheelhouse. Being a 21-year-old Californian, 1970s Mancunian copper slang wasn’t exactly part of my day-to-day vocabulary. (Oh, hey, I’d totally forgotten that you beta-read this for me, @sunnyrea!)
How do you choose your titles: I tend to gravitate to quotes (usually poetry or song lyrics) and/or wordplay of some kind. Sometimes I just pick out a significant word or phrase from the fic itself.
Do you outline: Frequently, although I rarely stick to my outlines religiously.
Complete: Nearly everything I have on AO3 is complete
In progress: Just counting posted WIPs, there’s Tell Me You See Me and Attack of the Giant Mutant Killer Rabbits
Prompts: Sure, but you have to come write them on my shower notepad. ;)
Upcoming work you’re most excited about: I have a number of ideas for additional works set in my This Be The Verse AU, but the one I’ve already written a substantial amount of (~13,000 words) is tentatively titled A Bag Full of God. This I originally had saved as ‘The Other Kind of Kidfic,’ although that’s misleading: it is de-aging fic, but they’re de-aged to 19-year-olds, so they’re not technically kids. It’s one that starts off fairly comedic and then gets progressively darker.
Worlds I would love to write for in the future: No idea. Fandoms tend to sneak up on me. But I have a feeling I’ll be stuck in the ST universe for a while. There’s just so much to play with, there. And I’ve found the fandom a very hospitable place to hang out in both on and offline (talked to a lot of lovely people at ST Las Vegas when I was there a few years ago, for instance). That said, I wouldn’t mind trying my hand at writing more Sherlock Holmes fic some day. (I have a thing for old school fandoms, apparently.)
Tagging everyone I’ve already tagged in this and anyone else who wants to fill it out!

WIP Challenge
WIP Challenge!! Tell your blog the titles of all the WIPs you are currently working on right now and a little about them and then tag five other writers.Another posting challenge I saw that appeals to meTagged by: nobodyDisclaimer: I'm only "actively" working on a handful of these.  I deeply want to finish all of them but some that have lingered for years are of a lower priority.  I also can't write for more than 2 fandoms at any given time and right now the two that interest me are MCU related and Sherlock.
1.  Sed Diabolus (MCU)
Takes place soon after Endgame.  Due to the nature of the multiverse it is both compliant and non-compliant to the film as well as being both a fix-it as well as making shit significantly worse.  The story is structured around Peter Parker - who returned, with everyone else, with the snap that restored everyone to life.  The difference is that he won't wake up.  Meanwhile, in another universe, Peter Parker has recently returned from from Europe.  Left to skulk around Queens at night, now that his identity has been revealed, he is feeling more lost than ever before.  Meanwhile Doctor Strange, back in the other universe, has been called upon to rescue the comatose Peter - and a startling truth is revealed!  What will it take to restore Peter once again?  Worse still, an old enemy of Stephen's has returned.  And a new enemy threatens to destroy everything they'd won with the defeat of Thanos.
2. Avengers: New Beginnings (MCU)
This is also an Endgame fix-it.  This is actually the first fix-it idea I had but then @kitcat992 and I started brainstorming Diabolus and I got extremely side-tracked.  In this one, the focus is more specifically on Tony Stark and the fact that he's been having horrific nightmares.  The thing is, according to Stephen Strange, they aren't nightmares but memories that come from another universe.  The story will involve repairing the fractures in the universe caused by the use of the gauntlet as well as looking at the various Avengers as the go forward from the defeat of Thanos.  There will also be the introduction of Kamala Khan and how, exactly, her powers came to be.
3. The Fire in Which We Burn (Sherlock)
Molly Hooper-centric.  Set immediately after TFP (with a thick dose of establishing history in the first chapter).  In essence this story developed from the question "what was upsetting Molly just before Sherlock made That Call"?  It also provides context for how she could go from speaking about Tom in glowing terms during TEH to stabbing his hand in TST.  Snatching back terminology from the jaws of obscurity this story relights on a ton of UST (unresolved sexual tension for the fandom young).  There is also a lot of Mycroft and Anthea involvement.  As to the actual story-line it involves an ex of Molly's who got dangerous.  The story will be about her dealing with said ex and the shit going on between herself and Sherlock.  Is anything salvageable from all of this?  Is it even worth discussing?
4. Oompa Loompa Doom-Pa-Dee-Die (Psych)
Originally this story was part of a huge Virtual 9th Season set after the end of the series.  Myself and about 6 or 7 other writers had plotted out in tremendous detail a connected story arc that would carry through 8 episodes (originally 16).  This story was set to be the 5th episode.  Sadly, after many years of trying to make the VS happen, I finally contacted the various writers and we agreed to let it go.  However, as this story was fully plotted and was a bit of writing that I remain very proud of, I reworked it to function as a stand-alone story.  Basically, Shawn and Gus end up finding themselves involved in a murder investigation at a chocolate factory.  As is likely evident from the title, the themes in this fic draw very heavily from the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory film.  There are actually two rival chocolate factories run by two sisters who have been rivals since their youth.  Their father, the former owner of the first factory, is fan-cast as, of course, Gene Wilder.  There are a lot of mysterious elements, humor, and hopefully a decent twist by the end.
5. Simon and Simon and Psych (Psych and Simon & Simon crossover)
In spite of letting this thing linger so long I’m actually pretty excited about it still.  The basic story plot is that Rick and AJ Simon travel to Santa Barbara so that AJ can compete in the annual (and real) half marathon.  Of course things go sideways when Rick gets caught up in a drug trafficking scheme with him as the accused.  To make matters worse, Shawn, Gus, and AJ all get caught and kidnapped while investigating the drug traffickers.  The one thing I’m especially excited about this story is bringing Rick and AJ into modern times with a few changes to their personal history.  It’s a lot of fun having them banter about websites and politics and stuff of that nature.
6. The Big Stink (Supernatural)
My very first foray into fanfic for this fandom I started this thing years ago when I had already become frustrated by the direction of the series.  I wanted to recapture what had originally made me love the show and that was the story of two brothers fighting monsters - no more no less.  The story is built around Dean being cursed to constantly have a terrible smell in his nose - which also affects his sense of taste.  While initially humorous the side effects of something like that become gradually worse as if not only makes eating and drinking awful but also leaves him constantly nauseous.  The story is about the boys backtracking their movements to figure out who or what put the whammy on Dean as well as trying to work out how to break the curse.
7. Asgårdsreia (HTTYD)
Right off the bat I made the mistake of starting this fic before properly plotting out the story first - thus the initial reason why it was left hanging.  Then the third film hit with its swath of disappointment and I’ve been somewhat less than eager to get back to it.  So the story, as it stands, is that the Viking clan is in the midst of celebrating Fyr Bal (basically “fire festival”).  Most of the clans join together at this time with each clan taking a turn to host on their year.  That year it’s Berk’s turn to host - much to Hiccup’s dismay.  He’s especially off-put by certain visiting clans eyeing him like a side of beef for their eligible daughters.  So, needing some escape, he takes Toothless out to survey some unexplored islands in search of new dragon species (basically the typical shit he’s been getting up to in Race to the Edge as well as the second movie).  Things go severely awry, however, when he comes across some dragon hunters and is hit with a bolo - breaking his left leg and making it impossible to operate the pedal used to fly Toothless.  Forced to shift on his side and fly by using one hand on the pedal, he and Toothless eventually crash land on a deserted island.  Now, badly injured and with no way to escape, they’re forced to run from the dragon hunters who followed in their wake.

How I Describe Characters: I don't.
Tumblr media
This is where the "show not tell" demon comes to bite eveyone in the ass. Most of the time, characters are introduced and described within the same parragraph (unless it's some sort of pen pal situation, or they are a ghost/invisible, or the MC is blind, etc.).
Most amateur writers will try to infodump all those quirky characteristics they've been working on so hard and then their introduction ends up looking like a grocery list of random attributes that vaguely resemble a real human and not an anime character.
I usually don't describe my characters unless there's a striking feature I need to point out like a scar, a tattoo, dyed hair, etc. and if it doesn't fit in my narration then I use dialogue or action to fill in the blanks left behind by my need to keep descriptions short and simple.
Work with negative space: less is more.
No description means "default characteristics" which can change depending the setting, your character's name, socioeconomic background, etc. This is where stereotypes come in handy (oof). Stereotypes exist whether we like them or not and we writers need to take advantage of them by using them in our favor.
The average person has: brown eyes (approximately 79% of the world's population has brown eyes), brown hair, under 6 feet tall (you can look what the average height by country is here), no scars (unless your book setting is wilder than average then go off and give everyone scars), no facial hair, short hair (men), shoulder length hair (women), etc. Skin color depends on other factors, but readers are more likely to guess that the character has a light skin tone than a darker one.
No description means the reader will probably imagine what I just described.
We can work with stereotypes in a small setting (say your story is set somewhere in small German village. What do most German people look like?) or in a more general setting (an international space station or simply a big city with a diverse population where one's ethnic background is hardly going to be the same as everyone else's). When it comes to wider settings the "default" changes a lot so go do your research if you are using real locations.
Names
Your character's name will paint a picture way faster than an entire parragraph.
Examples: Karen Miller, Ricardo Martinez, Fitzwilliam Wickham, Tyrone Williams, Wang Xiuying, Pierre Dubois, etc.
I didn't need to say a word for you to draw a basic picture of what they look like. Do what you must with this information.
Professions
Now that we have a name and we know what a default human looks like, we can start with clothes. Uniforms are easy because you don't need to do anything special with their description. Eveyone knows what a cop looks like and same goes for a bunch of other professionals. A quick Google search should be enough to let you know exactly what you need to know, but remember that a few words are more than enough. One adjective and one or two nouns should do the work.
Examples: Bloody scrubs, pristine suit, tactical gear, ragged jeans and a random hoodie, leather jacket and washed out jeans, etc.
On the other hand we can simply NOT mention any piece of clothing and simply go "David the doctor" and depending on the setting the reader will imagine a white lab coat, a stethoscope, either scrubs or a button up shirt, a pen in their pocket, a pager in their belt, and whatever else their brain can come up with before you throw in some action. If your character doesn't have a profession (too young or unemployed), you can describe the climate instead (what do people usually wear when it snows?) or the setting (could be a fancy party or a beach in the coast of France) or the activity your chatacter is doing (gym, class, visiting grandma, murdering the governor), etc.
Skin tones
Don't look for synonyms unless you want to super romantic (or super annoying). If you aren't like me and you have an inclination for poetic descriptions then go ahead and describe how the sun makes their skin shine or whatever, but if you aren't then here's a very basic chart:
Tumblr media
If that's not enough for you then go to a makeup websites/blog and look up tones vs undertone.
Again, you may NOT need to describe your character's skin tone if their name or setting was enough to deal with that. Most of the time the reader will simply guess your character is white and that's it.
Body proportions
Here's where it gets tricky. There's the basic descriptions of "tall vs short" and "fat vs thin". The reader will automatically choose a medium for these two (unless it's a male main character in which case they will always choose tall unless he is some sort of loser or a child) so you may not need to describe this either. Height is highly irrelevant unless the character is much smaller/shorter than the MC or if this new character is a romantic interest then "taller" and "shorter" should be enough of a description unless you want to get creative or your MC is the type to wax poetics about such a thing or your MC is the exact opposite and has the ability to guess their exact height (like a Sherlock or Spock type of smart character).
You can soften the "fat" adjective with words like "soft", "chuby", "curvy", "thick", or you may go for the kill and describe the character as "morbidly obese" if you feel like it. I don't make the rules, you do.
Objectification
Tumblr media
No one needs to read a description about a female character's boobs.
If you reeeeeeally want to go there you can mention how character A can't stop looking at Character B's chest or you can bring up the subject with dialogue or you can indirectly mention it by describing their clothes (be creative, bitch).
One thing most men don't know is that women (straight or otherwise) notice when other women have above average breasts, but most of time it's just "oh wow those are big" and "oh wow those are much bigger than mine" which may or may not be out of curiosity, jealousy, or attraction. I mean... women have eyes too, people. There's a third option which is "that can't be comfortable" which is 100% real. Big boobs can cause health problems, but this isn't a post for that.
MEN can also be objectified, but it's more subtle and less problematic as the mention of "marked abs" and "big muscles" is exactly what makes it to the cover of Men's Health magazine and superhero movies. Just like huge perfect boobs with small waists aren't realistic (but they exist), perfectly chiseled bodies aren't very realistic, but you do you. Find a balance and look up what's needed to have someone look the way you want them to (diet, exercise, good genes, demon deals, plastic surgery, etc).
Have fun NOT describing your characters and follow me for more tips. 💖
Bonus notes: Your chosen POV style will affect your descriptions. In 1st person POV, your MC's personality must color how they view people and what words they use to describe them, but you must keep in mind that most people don't stop to think about what a person looks like for more than a few seconds unless there's something special about them or the situation.

SCIENCE LECTURE
In my fic here, Sherlock has a little brainstorming session while drugged out of his mind, and this sheet of notes below is the result of it. I decided to write out a little explanation as to what all the individual parts of it mean. The explanation will be in the format of ITEM - TRANSLATION - BREAKDOWN. The item will be the selection of the notes that the section will be explaining, copied roughly verbatim for the reader's convenience. The translation, if needed, will be translating Sherlock's (my) shorthand into standard notation. The breakdown, then, will be the explanation.
Disclaimer: I was a medical student, before I had to withdraw due to hand injury, and my area of study in undergraduate was neuroscience and neuropsychology (and music performance, but that's not relevant here). I do try and explain everything in layman's terms, but 1) it will get a little technical in parts, fair warning, and 2) I'm still learning on how best to explain concepts to other. I try my best, people!
Tumblr media
ITEM 1: THE LIST
1) Narcotics- hallucin? (Translation: Hallucinogen)
2) Sleep dep. Halluc (Translation: Sleep deprivation Hallucination)
3) Mycroft- test?
4) Lights show
5. GMO (Translation: Genetically Modified Organism)
6) Moriarty???
7) Acute psychosis xxx
Breakdown:
In the episode, Sherlock says that he had come up with seven possible reasons for how he, Henry, and John could have all seen the dog-that-could-not-exist, and that he'd settled upon narcotics as the most likely. I came up with a list of seven of my own reasons:
1) Narcotics- hallucinogen: self-explanatory, as explained by the actual episode.
2) Sleep deprivation hallucination: this episode takes place what appears to be several days into pretty severe nicotine withdrawal, for Sherlock. His sleep schedule seems to be disastrous as is, and the nicotine withdrawal would've made him even more wired, so there's a solid chance he hadn't slept for several days, which is long enough to for sleep deprivation-induced hallucinations. While the hypothesis itself is perfectly sound, Sherlock puts it at number 2 instead of 1 because A) Henry ALSO saw the dog, B) sleep deprivation induced hallucinations generally don't start out with a full-fledged monster dog screaming in your face. If this hypothesis had been correct, he should've been experiencing more subtle hallucinations all night long.
3) Mycroft- test?: As discussed in series four, Mycroft occasionally has been employing tests into Sherlock's mental stability for decades, focusing on what Sherlock believes to be a dog. Sherlock, being Sherlock, has likely noticed this. Mycroft knows Sherlock is hanging around Baskerville. Sherlock also knows Mycroft knows this. Under the influence of a paranoia-inducing narcotic, Sherlock very easily could suspect his nosy brother at being somehow responsible.
4) Lights show: Again, inspired by series 4, and how the illusion of a ghost is created in TAB with nothing more than a projector. The logistics of how this would actually work are hazy, which is why this is further down the list, and quickly discounted by Sherlock.
5) GMO: While GMOs are usually discussed in the context of resilient strains of plants, all it really means is genetically modified organism. I'm speaking as one educated in 2014+, not 2012 (the ep air date), but breeding an especially large dog, and genetically modifying it to have red eyes, would probably not be too difficult a feat, scientifically. It could even be glowing, if you spliced in that GFP gene that the scientist mentions! However, this possibility is unlikely, because it raises the very big question as to why the scientists would allow their experiment to roam wild and attack people, why the scientists would bother making it in the first place, why haven't others taken pictures, etc. This is why it's so low on the list.
6) Moriarty???: Similar premise as the Mycroft's inclusion.
7) Acute psychosis xxx: AKA, "I lost my mind". Very unlikely, because it doesn't explain why Henry shared his hallucination, has no explanation as to why or how, and he has no other symptoms suggestive of a psychotic break. Which is why Sherlock scratched it out, and marked it with three Xs.
ITEM 2: THE FEEDBACK LOOP
This refers to the diagram, sitting just to the right of the list.
Breakdown:
X -> SNS Act -> Occ. -> (SNS Act) | (Amyg up) (Temporal) (up up Amyg)
Translation:
Unknown Substance X -> Sympathetic Nervous System Activation -> Occipital Cortex
(Amygdala stimulation) (Temporal) (Further Amygdala stimulation)
Let's define some terms!
This little diagram is a positive feedback loop, drawn very messily and with multiple steps added in after the fact. In biology, a feedback loop is a circuit in which the output of a system feeds back around to affect the system's input, which indirectly affects the system's output again, and so on. A simple example of a positive feedback loop is as follows: Addition of Substance X to System yields output of Substance Y. Substance Y triggers the production of more of Substance X, which again yields the output of more of Substance Y, which again triggers more production of Substance X- and so on. (feedback loops in the body are far more complicated, and most will eventually trigger their own end, etc, but such discussion is beyond the purpose of this post).
Unknown Substance X = input of whatever Sherlock was drugged with
Sympathetic Nervous System = simplistically speaking, our autonomic nervous system has two parts that work together, the sympathetic nervous system, and the parasympathetic nervous system. PNS can be summed up as rest and digestion, while SNS can be summed up as fight or flight.
Occipital Cortex = simplistically speaking, the visual center in the brain. There are other areas involved, but this area is the key and center to visual perception.
Temporal = simplistically speaking, the auditory cortex in the brain.
Amygdala = simplistically speaking, the fear center of the brain.
(I am defining all these terms as their relation to this situation at hand, nothing more. The brain is not so simple as to allocate X Function to Y cortex.)
So, Sherlock theorizes that input of Drug X stimulates the SNS and/or the amygdala, which caused inappropriate occipital lobe stimulation leading to hallucinations, which increased Sherlock's fear response, which caused further SNS activation, and so on. He suggested temporal lobe as a possible step; however, at no point during the episode did the drug cause auditory hallucinations, which is why it's not including in the loop proper.
There are actually a few problems with his loop, because he drew it out on the fly, while high off his mind, and he's not a neuroscientist, but he's got the right idea. The inappropriate, uncontrollable stimulation of the amygdala is almost certainly what Drug X causes, and would result in fear, paranoia, and increased suggestibility, all stated symptoms of Drug X. Inappropriate amygdala stimulation leads to inappropriate SNS activation, which encourages hallucinations, but would not cause them directly. It's likely that the drug also caused overproduction of dopamine, which can cause hallucinations. (However, there is no guarantee the occipital cortex was involved).
Whatever the chemical cause of the hallucination, he "sees" the dog, freaks out more, amygdala continues to be stimulated, freaks out because he’s Sherlock and isn’t used to freaking out, and the cycle continues, which is what leads to Sherlock's panic attack/meltdown in the pub- short-term, we're able to handle those stress reactions, especially if they're rational reactions to a stimulus, but keep them going for hours at a time and the body will start to freak out.
ITEM THREE: SYMPTOMS LIST
3a. Tachycardia, (up)hidrosis, shaking, panic attack?, nausea, emesis
(up)hidrosis = hyperhidrosis
Breakdown: Very rapid heartrate, increased sweating, shaking, nausea, emesis = vomiting, panic attack? (Question mark because Sherlock is not convinced of the diagnosis. Even high off his mind, he's still got his pride- he's Sherlock Holmes! He does not Get panic attacks! >;0)
3b. NOT NICOTINE, WITHDRAWAL UPUPUP
Breakdown: as John says in the pub, Sherlock was pretttty wired before all of this. Sherlock notes down that these symptoms are not the result of the nicotine withdrawal, because he can still feel the now increased effects of the nicotine withdrawal going on alongside these new symptoms. Chemically speaking, Drug X probably wouldn’t have any /direct/ effect on nicotine withdrawal, but it very well might exacerbate it indirectly.
3c. OH NO EFFECT - NOT STIMULANT
Translation: Alcohol no effect - not stimulant
Alcohol, to our bodies, is a depressant. If you drink it with a straight stimulant, like caffeine, their effects will counteract each other; for example, if I want to drink but keep clear-headed, I'll have a soda with my glass of wine. (DISCLAIMER: this will not make it safe to drive, this will not prevent alcohol poisoning, this can be dangerous, and do not do it in anything but careful moderation). Sherlock, as seen in the show, gets a shot of alcohol, probably in a desperate bid to calm down. It also does not work at all, because he was not dosed with a stimulant, but a hallucinogenic. The hallucinations led to stimulant-esque effects, but with no stimulant to counteract, Sherlock would simply end up sloshed and panicking. Sherlock realizes that the alcohol is not having the desired affect, and, when he realizes he was drugged, concludes that it therefore can not have been with a simple stimulant.
ITEM FOUR: DIAGRAM B
Oral --> long-lasting VS inhale --> feedback loop
no IV/IM
BLOOD TEST NEC ASAP (check)
Breakdown:
While the identity/structure of the drug he was dosed with are important, the route/method of administration are also a huge factor of variability that affects the intensity and timeline of the symptoms. Sherlock mentions four different routes of administration, here: oral (PO), inhalation, IV, and IM (intramuscular). A drug taken orally will have slower and longer lasting effects than one that is inhaled: one that is inhaled will act almost immediately, as seen in the episode, and its effect will also wear off very quickly.
Sherlock theorizes he must have taken the drug either orally or inhaled it, because the only other options are being stuck with a needle at some point, which he is sure never occurred. (Really, there are a few other options, most notably transdermal, that is unlikely for other reasons). Because the drug affects him for so long, he assumes he must have taken it orally, but also allows inhalation a spot on the list, by noting it could have instigated a feedback loop, and continued affecting him even after it'd left his system. He also notes the need for an urgent blood test, in the case that there are still some traces left to analyze. Especially if the drug was inhaled, the blood needs to be drawn ASAP. (Without any information on the chemical structure of Drug X, though, I can’t make any sort of estimation on what results Sherlock’s own blood test would show, with the sample drawn ~8 hours after being dosed).
ITEM FIVE: TIMELINE
To the left of diagram B, eleven hash marks next to a supremely messy "hours". AKA, eleven hours of 'experimentation', after Sherlock realizes he was drugged.
(upside down-items):
ITEM SIX: FORMULA
C12H22O11
The chemical formula for a sugar, which, as Sherlock states in the episode, was his initial theory. This would suggest PO as method of administration, not inhalation, but Sherlock's also not thinking too straight, right now. Give him a break. (He's also probably got a ton more information on PO medications in his head than airborne compounds).
ITEM SEVEN: SHERLOCK'S THEORY
THC? -amyg overstim in subject
-no SNS activ
(scratched out, termed STUPID by Sherlock)
Translation:
THC? - amygdala overstimulation in subject
-no SNS activation
Breakdown (this is the most technical passage of the post, fair warning:)
The 'subject' in this case refers to Sherlock. THC, as you probably know, is is the primary hallucinogenic/psychoactive component of cannabis (marijuana). Also as you probably know, cannabis tends to reduce anxiety effects in most individuals, but in some, it results in a paradoxical panic reaction. We're not entirely sure why, but this panic reaction appears to be due to GABA paradoxical disinhibition. Essentially, in a standard patient, cannabis leads to mass increases in GABA, which is the calm-down chemical in the brain. However, in these select patients, cannabis' initial activation of GABA may lead to the brain telling the production of GABA itself to calm down, which lead to an overall decrease in GABA levels in the amygdala, which leads to a panic reaction. (Disclaimer: This is still a working theory in the scientific community, and all depends on an individual's makeup of receptors and neural circuits. This is by no means settled discussion, either the end result or its mechanism.)
Overall, irrelevant to THC and cannabis, patients with severe childhood trauma do tend to have amygdalas that are primed for overstimulation (possibly by the very process described in the paragraph above). Whether Sherlock deleted Eurus and Victor or not, those neurological affects aren't something he could just will away. This is not saying that if you have childhood trauma, you will have a negative reaction to cannabis- but it IS saying that Sherlock might be a candidate expected to have a negative reaction.
Now, given Sherlock's extensive drug history, I'm sure he tried cannabis, at some point. It is also, however, never once brought up in the series proper, which suggests he has absolutely no interest in trying it again- perhaps because he had a negative reaction the first time. The panic reaction and amygdala overstimulation would probably feel similar to how Drug X affected him, which is why, initially, Sherlock writes it down as a suggestion, and also notes that it would not directly cause SNS activation. (At this point, he is not sure if SNS activation is a direct symptom or not).
He then swiftly marks it out as a stupid theory, because he realizes that he has a very atypical reaction to THC, so the likelihood of Henry sharing his hallucination and panic is very low. More to the point, because his reaction is so atypical and unpredictable, it makes no sense that unknown criminals would drug them with it.
TO SUM UP:
Sherlock is a graduate chemist, not a medical doctor, neuroscientist, or neuropsychologist. He does seem to have a great degree of interest and expertise in pharmacology, and probably also has a lot of knowledge in different routes of administration, due to his own personal history and his interest in forensics. However, he has no need to know, for example, the exact neuro-chemical causes of hallucinations. Therefore, his sheet of data is intentionally a bit spotty and with questionable accuracy, at points. (He also gets a bit of a break, considering he was "off his tits", or whatever the fuck that means, at the time. Poor guy needs a rest and a blanket and a hug.)
And that sums up Ranowa's entirely unnecessary lecture on pharmacodynamics!

WHAT IS SUCCESS?
The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines success as a favorable or desired outcome. It also defines success as the attainment of wealth, favor or eminence. Why is success tied to wealth? And why does being successful mean having lots of money and fame? But for me, success shouldn't be defined by how much money you make, how high your grade point average is, or what circle you navigate towards.
There isn't a one-word answer to define what success means. My personal definition of success is being rich without wealth. To be successful it is necessary to be rich, but how can you be rich without an overflowing bank account and a bursting wallet.
Become rich with experiences; ones you can look back upon without any regret. You can be rich with happiness; even when things don't always go as we planned. Have rich connections and bond with your family, friends and peers. Instead of wasting your days away staring at a clock, stop worrying and become rich with time. Keep expanding your mind by being rich with creativity and new ideas. There is so much more to being rich than having money.
Maybe you are going to focus on money rather than living an enriched lifestyle, maybe money is your definition of success but when you look up success in the dictionary I hope you can see past the simply worded definition. It is my hope that you can live a successful lifestyle without focusing on your bank statement and anything, that instead, you can live rich with happiness. Let us live because, let's face the fact, success isn't wealth.

VALUING OUR FAMILY
Family is the single most important part of our life. Ever since, they are the one who teach us about values and serve one another as well as sharing life's joys and sorrow. They said that "The Family is the first essential cell of human society". Family may be has nothing to do with genes but and everything to do with love, compassion and support. We can define the word family in many things and can mean anything. Either your friend is your family or your certain someone.
There's no perfect family in every part of this world. There's always a misunderstanding between each member. However, when you have nowhere else to go, family is your route. Family will welcome you with open arms and and will always forgave you despite all the mistakes you've done.
But let's be practical, not all family are like that. Sometimes, they will dumped you for being 'like this', 'like that', 'why can't you be like that someone'. If you didn't reached their expectations, they will be disappointed of you and accused you of being an irresponsible daughter/son. And that sucks.
No one wants to be ever compared over someone else. We have our own characteristics, prowess and anything. We differs in everything. The question is, 'Would you still follow your parents' order even though you are not happy at all? Would you give up your happiness for them?
One of you might answered YES, because how could we disobeyed them where in fact they are the one who raised and feed us. In specific, we are just scared to be dump thinking we have nowhere else to go and that we are used to have them in our back. And for the word family.
We value our family so much that even sacrificed our own happiness for them. But for they are always right and always will even how hard it is to reach their high expectations.

WHEN YOU ARE INTROVERT
Introvert people never had their comfort zone. They always enjoying spending their time alone. Being an introvert was really hard for me. I may be enjoying being alone but there's this something inside I was lacking about. I only had two real friends in class. One was my cousin and the other one was an otaku. There's this day when my otaku seatmate was absent and I have no pair for the activity. And my other seatmate wants to work with her friend who was on rank no.1.  I just shrugged my shoulders off and started the activity right away. Working without a pair was really hard for me because the activity the teacher have given has a really long solution. But still I finished it.
Being alone without any other friends was no good. I felt a stabbed in my heart as I made my way to my room. I lying in my bed while looking up the ceiling and thinking about how bad my day was. I grabbed my journal from the cabinet and I started to write such emotional and mourning poems I've been keeping for a very long time. I was totally hurt and somewhat disappointed of myself as to why I am like this? Why I feel like I don't belong to them? What's worse is that I don't feel like I even exist when I'm around them.
My every day was no special at all. I woke up early and go to school then go home and write something in my journal. And that repeat endlessly.
But as time passes by, I can say I am better than I was. I concur that by writing poems, I expressed my emotions to I've been keeping for a very long time. It's like an effective medicine that gradually heals me. And with that I started to change myself slowly. I gained friends who genuinely cares for me and treating me like I belong to their group even though we just know each other not so long ago.
I recommend that when you are lonely, Tru to write something from your heart and vent your grudges and hatred through writing. Trust me, just by simply doing it, you will be better.

WHEN DETECTIVE NOVEL HITS YOU
Have you ever heard how cool detective novel is?
I was very late to discover such amazing detective novels. I was used to just chilling and minding my own business but when life's suddenly becomes boring, reading has been my counterpart. With that I also started to lost interest about mere things and anything which I can say a one good effect (my opinion). I was been told by my friends that I am no more my old self. I was stupid, I can say. I has this mind like a ten year old kid when I was in junior high. I lacked of knowledge about simple things and such. I want to pinch my old self for not getting matured early. Somehow I just laughed alone when I remembered how silly I was back then. But we all believe that people do change, don't we?
By reading detective novels, I started to think in a more mature way of solving problems rather than just giving vague explanations of who did that and why they did it. It catched my interest and preferences, I guess. Who wouldn't love mystery novels nowadays?
However, I've also got some quiet good benefits of reading these cool types of book is that-- as what I have experienced, you become the character that is there in the book. My perceptions in life has changed too and I believed it is because of the attitude of the character I was reading. Like I became keen observer, which was not so me. I also know how to crack codes and learned some. I was imagining myself like I was some sort of detective like Sherlock Holmes, Shinichi Kudo and of course, the very cool amongst all, Loki Mendez.
Some of you might think that it really does no good to me but everyone, we have this thing called taste and preferences. Like you can't just force someone to also like what you are liking. I keeps on recommending these books to my friends but it seemed like they were not interested at all. And that makes me disappointed.
If I were to choose amongst mystery novel and a romantic one. I will surely pick the former. Romantic novel is good but mystery novel is far more better.
Things have gone very hard right now because I couldn't buy any of those books displayed in the store. Like it's teasing me because I have no money to spend for them. I was really trying my best to save money to buy those but school payments is dragging me down.
Nonetheless, I believe time will come and I'd have it my hand while making a gargling sound saying 'my precious' using Smeagol's voice. But anyway, no matter how hard the life right now, if I have my book, I wouldn't mind thinking about anything. I can say reading mystery novels has become one of my passion and I will never bothered giving up on it over anything non-sense this world has.
Tumblr media
DREAMS OVER FRIENDSHIP? FRIENDSHIP OVER DREAMS?
Dreams and friendship, should you choose between them? Shall you pursue one and leave the other alone? Or, should you pursue your dreams with your friends?
Let's talk about dreaming first. Dreams are meant to be live. I've read and heard about this, which made me think, other people around me reached their dreams without their old friends. I've seen them on their social medias. And others are so busy with their dreams that they've forgotten about their friends while others are busy hanging out with their friends that they've forgotten about their dreams.
Then what is friendship? Is it a bad thing especially when you're achieving goals in life or rather, it would help you to become stronger. Friendship is just a wonderful thing that could happen between people. It's like God has given you another brother or sister that you treat them as you family. Based from what I've experienced, other friends stayed longer than love relationship. Some I've cut them out of my life. The reason why is that they aren't real and bad-mouthed me behind my back. It really does take years before you realize what kind of relationship do you have with this people. Are they too clingy? Are they fake? Leaving you behind? Or a true friend/s that wouldn't leave you in case of trouble?. We can never know.
Dreams and friendship are both wonderful things made by God, through our minds and hearts. These people are talking can tear you apart, can make you cry or laugh. But then at the end of the day, would it be better if you could reach and live your dreams together with your friend. A strong bond that will motivate you to work harder and to achieve more goals together.

Redbeard/Yellowbeard, Vernet, & Time Travel: Various Ways HoB & T6T Are Connected
Gatiss: To be honest, I put [an explanation of Redbeard] into the first draft of episode two, and actually explained it – the reason that Sherlock was behaving like a child was because he’d once upon a time fallen for that story that your bunny rabbit has gone to live on a farm somewhere. And then we thought, ‘No, let’s hold it back because we can tease it a bit.’ And we genuinely thought, ‘We can keep this running for years.’ But then actually…
Moffat: It’s nice to have resolved it.
Gatiss: So the truth is that when he was little – and obviously Mycroft tormented him about it – is that his dog died, and he totally fell for the idea that Redbeard had gone to live in a happy valley somewhere. ( x )
Yes, we’re back to the rabbit idea…as in HoB and time travel…mentioned here. (Read that meta, because otherwise, the rest of this won’t make sense.)
Moriarty
Is he not the celebrated author of The Dynamics of an Asteroid, a book which ascends to such rarefied heights of pure mathematics that it is said that there was no man in the scientific press capable of criticizing it?
— Sherlock Holmes, The Valley of Fear
This topic had been covered by *Newcomb about 20 years before, and it may have been him that inspired the character of Moriarty.
Mary reading Dynamics of Combustion, and 221B is blown up in TFP, but she also manages to jump in front of a bullet in T6T before Sherlock even really has time to react.
The book that Moriarty wrote involves chaos theory.
Remember in the meta about the blog entries being recycled in S3 and S4? It’s related to that, due to the butterfly effect
Simple actions and events can alter history, especially if your memory isn’t reliable.
“The butterfly effect is exhibited by very simple systems. For example, the randomness of the outcomes of throwing dice depends on this characteristic to amplify small differences in initial conditions—the precise direction, thrust, and orientation of the throw—into significantly different dice paths and outcomes, which makes it virtually impossible to throw dice exactly the same way twice.“
Butterfly and Dice…oh!
Tumblr media
Well, here’s Mary reading the The Thyroid Gland, which is usually described as being butterfly-shaped. **Knowing about it is important too, if you’re involved in time travel.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They were in the video on John’s blog, that Moriarty did when he entered 221B back in 2012, and Mary had her own that showed side 4 when she was going across the map.
T6T
Mary: How? Every movement I made was entirely random, every new personality just on the roll of a dice!
Sherlock: Mary, no human action is ever truly random. An advanced grasp of the mathematics of probability, mapped onto a thorough apprehension of human psychology and the known disposition of any given individual, can reduce the number of variables considerably. I, myself, know of at least 58 techniques to refine a seemingly infinite array of randomly generated possibilities down to the smallest number of feasible variables.
Then, he admits he made part of that up…
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
By TLD, Sherlock is using some method to figure out where people need to be two weeks in advance. But…if not the one above, then time travel?
Two Major Results of Time Travel
-You die faster “The time machine can’t adjust your age backward–if it did, it would be altering your brain at the same time, wiping out the memories of what you experienced.” Hmm, wiping memories…It would be very beneficial to have a storage place for all of those…somewhere beyond a Mind Palace, which could be altered.
-Eating would be a problem, partially due to **bacterial infections gained from unfamiliar foods and their processing.
Redbeard/Yellowbeard The Space Pirates
TSoT
Mycroft: So, this is it, then. The big day. I suppose I’ll be seeing a lot more of you from now on.
Sherlock: What do you mean?
Mycroft: Just like old times.
Sherlock: No, I don’t understand.
Mycroft: Well, it’s the end of an era, isn’t it?  John and Mary – domestic bliss.
Sherlock: No, no, no – I prefer to think of it as the beginning of a new chapter.
*Mycroft is silently smiling on the other end of the phone line*
Sherlock: What?
Mycroft: Nothing!
Fast forward through the mentions of not getting involved…
Mycroft: Oh, by the way, Sherlock – do you remember Redbeard? Sherlock: I’m not a child any more, Mycroft. *Sherlock’s jaw clenches*
Mycroft: No, of course you’re not.  Enjoy not getting involved, Sherlock.
Mycroft telling Sherlock not to get involved, because history will repeat itself.
By HLV, we see Redbeard running toward Sherlock in the hallway, after Sherlock has been shot. It’s also the only time we see Mary with her wedding veil down over her face, as it would have been during the ceremony.
Tumblr media
TAB
Redbeard = Nothing or 0
Watson: As your friend, as someone who…worries about you, what made you like this?
Holmes: Oh, Watson. Nothing made me. *we hear claws scratching, and a dog whimpering*
Holmes: I made me. *scrabbling and whimpering continues*
Holmes: Redbeard?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now, we look at Mycroft’s notebook, and the binary matrix at the top with all the 0s. Combined with the equation underneath Scarlet Mo […??], it’s about working with space and time.
Not sure how? There are meta for that. ( x ) ( x )
In T6T, we have a visual for missing gaps in time, because of the clock that goes along with Sherlock’s fight with Ajay, but it’s not understandable as such until we’re in TFP. Meta by @darlingtonsubstitution
Alternately (or also), the sixteen by six, five by seven, nine by nineteen could be measurements. Due to the TLD & The Valley of Fear connections, however, I still prefer @darlingtonsubstitution ‘s explanation for the dimensions.
TFP
Redbeard is made into a code word for Victor Trevor, Sherlock’s childhood friend, who was taken from him by a female. Sherlock was Yellowbeard, and that’s who Mycroft dresses as in TFP.
Tumblr media
Back to Baskerville, and this formula on the whiteboard.
**Vancomycin Hydrochloride
Vancomycin is an antibiotic. When taken by mouth it fights bacteria in the intestines.
The bactericidal action of vancomycin results primarily from inhibition of cell-wall biosynthesis. In addition, vancomycin alters bacterial-cell-membrane permeability and RNA synthesis. There is no cross-resistance between vancomycin and other antibiotics. Vancomycin is not active in vitro against gram-negative bacilli, mycobacteria, or fungi.
Nice to have if you’re concerned about eating while in another place in time and space, along with that knowledge of the butterfly-shaped thyroid Mary read up on HLV.
611174 - Hamamy Syndrome or Gene ID for Canine Lupus Familiarus
Hamamy syndrome is a genetic disorder which is marked by abnormal facial features and defects in the heart, bone, blood, and reproductive cells.
Hamamy Syndrome is something a person is born with, so it cannot be caught or developed. Unless you have the ability to manipulate genes, as they do at Baskerville.
Or, you can write it down to recall your family dog that died when you were children. The dog that wasn’t a rabbit, because the rabbit was being genetically manipulated.
Vernet
One, it's a reference that was used particularly in the Granada series, where more than once Holmes or Watson mentions that Vernet was Holmes's relative--his French grandmother's brother. We're also back to the Dr. Who references. Madame Vernet is in the episode The Pandorica Opens, the episode that talks about the butterfly effect without actually using those words. It’s also in the same story arc with Amy’s Choice, which is basically the plot, villain, and even villain actor as in TLD. I’ve actually seen several meta on that connection, but the one above is the shortest, and makes the point.
As for pure mathematics, a topic close to Moriarty’s heart…
TD: Time Dimension Logical Sequence Number
The key component of any successful OBIEE implementation is the metadata model known as the repository (RPD).
Doing it right is sometimes considered “black magic”, and small mistakes in the RPD can impact all the exposed Subject Areas, resulting in poor performances or, even worse, wrong results. ( x ) So, it’s rather like the mathematic data-manipulation remedy against the butterfly effect? T6T Mycroft: Back on terra firma. *while he’s talking about manipulating data*
Teradata: One of the leading metadata storage, management, and analytics companies in the world.
TD12 = teradata 12 - version which would have been in use during HoB. Or choose its leading competitor… Oracle:
Sequence numbers are enumerations of time dimensional members at a certain level. The enumeration must be dense (no gaps) and must correspond to a real time order. For example, months in a year can be enumerated from 1 to 12.
Oracle the data company, not as in someone that has premonitions.
Mycroft: Are you having a premonition, brother mine?
Sherlock: The world is woven from billions of lives, every strand crossing every other.  What we call premonition is just movement of the web.
If you could attenuate to every strand of quivering data, the future would be entirely calculable, as inevitable as mathematics.
Mycroft: Appointment in Samarra.
Sherlock: I’m sorry?
Mycroft: The merchant who can’t outrun Death. You always hated that story as a child.
Less keen on predestination back then.
Sherlock: I’m not sure I like it now.
Mycroft: You wrote your own version, as I remember.  Appointment in Sumatra. The merchant goes to a different city and is perfectly fine.
Sherlock: Goodnight, Mycroft.
Mycroft: Then he becomes a pirate, for some reason.
Sherlock: Keep me informed.
Mycroft: Of what?
Sherlock: Absolutely no idea.
If you’re going backward though, you still need logical sequence numbers, to avoid a casual loop. Those happened in Dr. Who episode involving Bootstrap Paradox, written about here by Jonathan Holmes
…and the 80′s film, Somewhere in Time, where a playwright uses self-hypnosis to assist him in traveling back in time to the woman he loves. A pocket watch results in the loop. This brings us back to Sherlock first telling John how he knows about his history, because in canon ACD, it wasn’t a phone–it was Watson’s pocket watch. It’s twin, is in TAB, with the photo of Irene Adler.

An interesting Study between Mary and pscycopaths According to Amanda’s tweet Mary is a psychopath. Well that would mean her entire story arc is face, every emotion, every feeling, every sentence is pre thought and well mediated for maximum effect.  I did some research and learned a few interesting facts about psychopaths. 1. Psychopaths Can’t Recognize Fear They are unable to recognise the signs and facial expressions of fear in a person’s face. This is due to a malfunction of the amygdala – the part of the brain that control fear response. On a psychopath the outer layer is thinner than normal. The strange thing is that it doesn’t affect or apply to all the other emotions. Because they don’t recognise it, they find it difficult to mimic the emotions themselves. 2. Psychopaths Crave Dopamine Psychopaths are on a certain scale addicted to dopamine. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that activates the reward centre of the brain. According to studies a psychopath’s brain produces more dopamine than normal. 3. Psychopaths May Have An Empathy Switch The general consensus that they can’t imagine themselves in other people’s shoes and only uses people as chess pieces is wrong. Studies suggest that in certain cases they can empathize with certain situations. They concluded that they have a “on” and “off” switch. It is mostly on off, although they can switch it if needed, if it suits their needs. Apparently this is when they turn ‘nice’ and ‘sweet’ 4. Psychopaths Receive Harsher Criminal Sentences Usually when a judge is told someone is a psychopath, they on average give a three to five year longer sentence than normal 5. Businesses Are Filled With Psychopaths Oxford researcher Kevin Dutton did made a list of the most likely professions of psychopaths. The list showed that the top four was police officers, lawyers, and surgeons with the number one being CEO’s 6 Internet Trolls Are Psychopaths Several Canadian universities did a survey were they asked a wide variety of web users a set of questions about the time they spend online, do they comment on forums and groups, do they play the villain in games just to torture characters and do they purposes troll certain people and groups just for the fun of it. The result concluded that most of them show characteristics of the “Dark Tetrad” This is what they call the intersections of four unpleasant personality traits – sadism, Machiavellianism, narcissism and psychopathy. 7. The Prosocial Psychopath James Fallon is a neuroscientist who calls himself a ‘prosocial psychopath’. This means that although he has the brain of a psychopath, he even have the mission MOA-A gene, also called the ‘warrior gene’ as it is responsible for aggressive behaviour. He admits that he lacks empathy, that he is manipulative and highly competitive but believes his upbringing played a huge part. He was brought up in a loving and caring home. He believes he is a prosocial psychopath, because he acts and behaves within society’s norms. 8. Psychopaths Have A Poor Sense Of Smell Because psychopaths have a lower level of orbital cortices functioning, which not only affects the ability to make long-term plans and keep impulses at check, it also their ability to detect smells. In fact it was proven that the higher they score in psychopath test, the lower their ability to smells was. 9. Presidents And Psychopaths Have A Lot In Common Although none of the presidents tick all the checking boxes of a psychopath; they did displayed a many characteristics, the FD (Fearless Dominance) trait being the strongest. This trait is when you have the lack of fear and unwillingness to back down from dangerous situations. Plus it allows them to charm people. 10. Psychopaths Have Recognizable Speech Patterns They used words like “uh” and “um” more frequently to appear more normal. They would also use “because” and “so that” more than usual as well. They would talk about their crimes mostly in the past tense. Some interesting differences between a psychopath, narcissist and sociopath  So let’s go to Mary A few things stood out for me, 1. The Sign of Three, she manipulated both Sherlock and John about the case and then gave them each the thumbs up. Yeah, another mission accomplished. 2. In His Last Vow, when she gave John the usb, she said “because you won’t love me when you’re finished” the seeds of doubt sown right there and then, it seems innocent enough, but she knew exactly what kind of man John is, so saying that she kept him from reading that. I mean every time he would consider reading it; her words will play in his mind. So he didn’t, she used his character against him. 3. In The Abominable Bride when they were on the plane, Mycroft suggested the MI5 archive, and she was like “Yep, that’s where I’m looking” she immediately undermined his authority and power by saying that and that she would think the security would be a good idea, that sows seeds of doubt about Mycroft to anyone, distancing him even more from them. Let’s not forget that Mycroft had knew exactly who she was from the beginning, since she knew about AGRA all those years ago, they used her on a freelance basis, so yes, she would have access to MI5, Sherlock and John didn’t know that, so what better way to piss off Mycroft than deliberately saying something like. Just another game to her of manipulation. And Mycroft can’t say anything because she insured that both John and Sherlock are on her side. That would put him against them. (Bloody hell I hate her more and more) 4. Later at the cemetery John had enough and says he’s taking her home and she is like “what?” yes it is a funny line, but it comes down to the fact that she nullified John as the man in the relationship, as a dominant figure. She is clearly in control of every step, everything. I bet the pregnancy is another tick in her manipulation check list, what better way to ensure a man’s loyalty by making him a parent, especially a man like John? 5. Oh and then the best part came in The Six Thatchers where she basically stated that she is better than John, what was the line ‘She is a retired super-agent with a terrifying skill-set of course she is better.’ So John and all his skills as a soldier, a good man is nullified once again. She wasn’t a super-agent, she was a freelance assassin. There are loads of them. Saying that in front of John, she broke his already low self-esteem even more, another chunk in his armour, making sure he submits to her and Sherlock. I mean she basically told him compared to her and Sherlock he was a nobody. That is typical psychopath behaviour. She manipulated John, making him more dependable on her. 6. Then she died, oh how heroic of her, what a charm and sacrifice, how sad…. And she tells John being Mary Watson was the only life worth living... oh please. How manipulative can she be, placing that guilt on John? Ensuring that for the rest of his life, he will feel like he failed her, the man who made it his life to take care of people, a soldier and doctor, and he failed his wife, and then telling Sherlock they’re even? What the flying f)**!!! 7. Then comes the video clip, oh how we loved those (God she died in the first ep and we get to see her two more times, plus a hallucination….. if only that was Jim) And what better way to make sure Sherlock gets involved, gets even more broken up and his mental state ripped apart, make John a case. Sherlock loves cases, so give him one. To save John, from what, the destructions and manipulations she did? The she tells him to go to hell. According to Shannon on the little picture, a psychopath goes to great lengths to ruin your life, laugh about it and makes sure the most damage is done, what better way to ruin their friendship and telling him to nearly kill himself. Must give that to her, that’s a great way of killing someone and giving yourself the perfect alibi. And she makes it so heartfelt, so “oh even from death I care so much, I was born for this. Died for this little redemptions arc, oh feel me!” 8. Then comes the hallucination, and John is even haunted by her after her death, by the ‘man she thought he was’ dude she thought you was a puppet on a string. Cut the lines. So yes when Amanda said Mary was a pscycopath we heard, but didn’t listen, or some of us did, she was horrible.

[MF] THE SCHOOL TEACHER PART 1
“Nonsense… Everyone knew that he was the bloody one, who attacked our parliament. And he is being hanged to death after 12 long years. Why our authorities take so much time to convict someone for such a horrendous crime?” Karan kept the newspaper aside, after reading the news article on a terrorist hanged to death and sipped his tea at the tea stall outside the school campus.
Karan Mehra, a biology teacher for the 11th and 12th grade, in one of the finest ICSE board schools of the city, showed his disgust after reading the sentence of capital punishment being carried out for the terrorist. He had been convicted for the attack on the parliament of the country.
“It’s all bloody politics. Elections are just a year ahead and so everyone is pulling all the strings they can to gain the faith of citizens.” Abhimanyu replied after gulping down his morning tea.
Abhimanyu Singh, a sports head and an Ex-Army man who had taken voluntary retirement from the Indian army. Abhimanyu was one of the few staff members whom the principal relied upon and trusted the most.
“Ya… I don’t understand why to arrest the terrorist when being caught in action. Just shoot those bloody scumbags.” Karan too finished his tea and lit the smoke for himself.
“Back in the army, at the border, we never arrested terrorists when we caught them. We just took those swine to the cordoned area, made them recite all the info and plans alike a parrot and shot them after they had nothing of eminence left to tell. Hell, we never even took them to the base.” Abhimanyu spoke reminiscing his past life as Major in the army.
“Sir, how many terrorists have you gunned down in your career?” Karan was always fascinated by the life of a soldier in the line of duty. He once wanted to be in the Air Force but that was against his Dad’s will. Thus, he had to give up his dream.
“Frankly, after serving the country for more than 20 years, I have lost the count. Though there are a few which can never be forgotten.” Abhimanyu smiled as his face displayed a sense of pride in serving his country and protecting it from foreign threats. The bell rang and the classes began.
“Time to get back to the current life.” Abhimanyu winked and got up dusting his ass. Karan too stabbed his cigarette butt and quickly popped a couple of mouth fresheners and applied hand sanitizer to avoid the foul smell of smoke from his fingers.
They walked into the campus and the security personnel immediately got up from his chair and saluted Abhimanyu and Karan as they stepped in. Abhimanyu and Karan were in charge of the disciplinary committee of the school. Abhimanyu being an Ex-Army, was appointed as a head of security too.
Both had their own reputation on the campus. Abhimanyu was famous for strict military-grade discipline. Karan was an offbeat teacher and most respected by the students, for his teaching style and his fearless attitude i.e. ‘I don’t give damn about what you think of me.’ The mere presence of the duo on the campus was enough for students to keep them from crossing any limits. Lest they found themselves in those teachers’ crosshairs.
The school was located on the outskirts of the city, in a small unpopulated village. Mesmerizing scenic beauty stretched around the school with open arms, open grounds exactly in front of the school. On the right side of the school building were lush green farms with tall grass stretched till the horizon. On the left of the school was a college run by the same trust. The football ground and basketball court behind the building were shared by both the institutions. The ride to the campus in the early morning was always soothing.
Days turned to weeks and weeks turned into months and that year’s school life was heading closer to the event of the year i.e. The Annual Day.
One fine morning, Karan was waiting outside the school campus in his car, letting the school buses get into the compound. The road was not very wide. The parents too came to drop their kids, which created a chaotic traffic scene.
Waiting for the traffic to get clear, Karan saw two people standing at the fence of the ground opposite to the school and watching or rather observing the school building. They seemed suspicious and were definitely not parents. Their attire and dressing style clearly gave them away as it did not blend with the crowd which is always seen at school gates. Moreover, neither of them seemed to be the villagers of the self-same village.
Abhimanyu was busy at the main gate of the school, escorting the school buses into the school premises and preventing private transport vehicles from entering inside. Karan saw Abhimanyu and honked to get his attention. Abhimanyu came to Karan as he rolled down the window.
“Sir, can you see those two guys? I don’t think they are parents or villagers.” Karan pointed in the direction and Abhimanyu turned his head to check.
“Ya, who are they?” Abhimanyu who had been busy till now in clearing the traffic glared at the odd couple.
“Park your car inside and then we will go and have the nicest chat with them.” Saying so, Abhimanyu blew his whistle to make way for Karan’s car to get inside the campus.
Before Karan and Abhimanyu could walk out and confront those two strangers, they fled the scene on a beat-up bike at full speed. They might have got the hint that the school staff is coming to talk to them. They may not have answers to any of those questions. These all made it even more suspicious for Abhimanyu and Karan.
Before Karan could speak anything, his cell buzzed. It was a parent who was late to drop his kid to school and had called to take permission to allow his kid to enter.
“Where have you reached?” Karan asked, still looking in the direction the two guys had fled in.
“Sir, we are on the straight road, hardly five mins to reach.” The parent on the other end replied.
“Did you see anyone rushing at high speed on a beat-up, old bike?” Karan asked to confirm the direction.
“Ya, in fact, they stopped just a few meters away from our car. One guy got down and got into an old Maruti car and took left to the highway. The other one on the bike kept driving straight.” The parent replied still not able to understand what it was all about.
“Okay.” Karan clicked off and told Abhimanyu what he had come to know. The campus gate was now closed. Abhimanyu instructed security fella to allow that parent who had just called.
“Let’s have tea.” Abhimanyu started walking to the tea stall and Karan followed him. The guy running tea stall served them tea and cigarette for Karan.
“Did you see those two guys who drove at high speed, a few mins back?” Karan asked, lighting his smoke, to the tea stall guy.
“Ya, they were here yesterday evening too. I was leaving for home after closing down the stall. They were talking in some language that I couldn’t understand.” The tea stall fella was also surprised by it.
“Any problem sir?” The tea stall guy asked. Karan didn’t answer and stared at Abhimanyu who was thinking something, still looking in the direction, the duo had scrammed in.
“What’s on your mind?” Abhimanyu asked sensing the discomfort on Karan’s face.
“I don’t know. But they were talking in some other language that makes me think that…” Karan left his words hanging.
“Don’t talk like an army guy. I don’t see them as a terrorist or something nearly potent to that.” Abhimanyu smiled as he could read what was on Karan’s mind. Watching Karan not buying his words, Abhimanyu continued.
“I have seen those lowlife scamps for most of my life. It won’t take more than a minute for me to pick out those bastards from a crowd. However, these two guys were nowhere near to it.” Abhimanyu patted Karan’s back and finished his tea.
“Moreover, there are a lot of people out in this world who have only dirt in their doings. They may be the perpetrators of the child trafficking cart. We can’t let this go ignored.” Karan stabbed his smoke and gulped down his tea in one go.
“Okay Mr. Sherlock, I’ll talk about it today itself with the P.S.I of the police station in our vicinity and will inform them. He is a close friend of mine. I’ll make sure that they do strict patrolling of our school for a few days.” Abhimanyu paid for the tea and they walked back to the campus.
Karan went to the bio class on the top floor, adjacent to the bio lab. He never preferred to sit in the gent’s staff room. He had his chamber inside the bio lab. The wall adjacent to it was bio class.
Karan started his lecture with the discussion on Genetics. He explained the theory of classical genetics and gave a puzzle based on genes to the students to solve. He always had something interesting to do in his classes and always kept the students engaged in more of activity-based learning. While students were engrossed in solving the puzzle. Karan kept staring out of the window, at the open green farms, stretched miles across.
“Everything is open. Anyone can come from any side.” He murmured to himself. The thought of anyone can come inside the school from the back and right inside the building after sun bids goodbye, made chills run down his spine. Anxiety and the thought about the safety of the kids gripped the blood surging through his nerves.
During the recess break, Karan walked into the Abhimanyu’s office. Abhimanyu was sitting at his table and going through the bus registers he maintained. Before Karan could say anything, Abhimanyu spoke.
“I have already talked to my friend who is a P.S.I. And they are already patrolling the area now.” He smiled at Karan as again, he could read what was on Karan’s mind.
“Let’s hope, nothing shitty turn out.” Karan sighed and leaned back in the chair, resting his head behind.
“Don’t worry, things are under control.” Abhimanyu leaned forward resting his arms on the glass covering the wooden desk and continued.
“My kids too study in this school, Karan. Like you, I am also concerned for not only my kids, but every single human on this campus.” Karan face showed a smile of assurance. After all, a father will never let anything happen to his kids.
Assured with words, Karan walked out of Abhimanyu’s office. Rest of his day passed with students but at the back of his mind, the thought of what he saw in the morning never left.
On the same evening, Karan was sitting at the cafe and sipping his coffee. His mind was still not at ease though he saw patrolling police officers, while he was leaving the campus. Abhimanyu had even instructed the security guards to keep their eyes open and drivers of the buses were also asked to keep taking rounds during school hours.
A thought to talk with Jairaj came to Karan’s mind. Jairaj Sinh Rathod was an old colleague and now a cop in I.B. (Intelligence Bureau). He immediately dialled Jairaj’s number but the call couldn’t get connected. Karan tried to call him a few more times but Jairaj was certainly not in the coverage.
“Must be busy with some task.” Karan said to himself and dropped a text to Jairaj. For the next two days, Karan kept his eyes and ears open when on the campus. Two days later, Abhimanyu called Karan during his free class to his office.
“I have news for you.” Abhimanyu spoke with his classic smile as Karan grabbed the chair and sat across him.
“Your concern was proved right.” Karan’s forehead creased in worry.
“But nothing to worry now. I.B has tracked down four terrorists hiding in the city and has nailed them. The news is not made public for obvious reasons but things are fine now.” Abhimanyu then narrated the details. Karan’s eyes widened on hearing whatever just Abhimanyu said.
“But how come you know all this?” Karan could not buy the story that a Sub-Inspector could have so many details.
“I have contacts boy. I had a life before school.” Abhimanyu winked at him and continued.
“I think, I should buy you a smoke. Your eyes were pretty good at spotting what others couldn’t.” Abhimanyu got up and they both walked outside the campus to the tea stall.
“Now, I’ll be able to focus more on the work and Annual Day’s preparations.” Karan took a long drag of his cigarette and released a streak of smoke.
“Ya, even I feel more relaxed now. Couldn’t share the worries regarding this issue with anyone, except you.” Abhimanyu took a loud slurp of his tea.

Review of Absorbed Substances (#1)
27 June 2017
Double posting coming your way (and depending on whether I can finish writing both by the end of the night).
Something that I really really believe in, in regards to creativity and art, is that absorbing is almost just as important as creating. Absorbing not only opens up many differing avenues of thoughts or ideas or etc., but what you absorb also influences your work (in addition to your past, present, and future environments). I based my visual narratives course on three principles of 1) absorbing, 2) critically analyzing what we absorb (this is incredibly important or else we’re just blinding accepting general representations of other people’s ideologies), and 3) creating (taking all that stuff and blending it together, and making something original, cool, creative, innovative).
We gotta be wise though, about what we absorb, and although there is a time for everything, including blind consuming, I feel that active consumption often makes everything more colorful and interesting. Again not to say there aren’t times for blind consumption, because I think those moments are in certain ways important too.
Thus, I’m trying to remember the 2017 year thus far and recall what exactly I absorbed and make a “written” record of it right here. Maybe I’ll do some rating kind of system or review type thingy too. Nah, I’ll just highlight some.
Books:
1. The whole Harry Potter Series
2. Stitches by David Small
3. American Born Chinese by Gene Luen Yang (re-read) - good read if you’re interested in graphic novels, what its like to be a first generation Chinese American, and if you need a solid chuckle throughout.
4. Batman: Dark Victory - beautiful and rather untraditional artwork that uses high contrast, great representation and repetition, and excellent character design, has a grimy narrative that reminisces of Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy.
5. Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro
6. Small Shop Printings - basically a collection of Japanese print design work, which is relatively different from Euro-American print design work; if you’re into design, it gets you all worked up about designing.
7. Y: The Last Man
8. Jake Wyatt Art Book
9. Counterfeit Gods by Timothy Keller - a breakdown of what we consider most important in our lives; this book really shaped my outlook on stewarding my time and energy towards God first and foremost.
Films:
1. Room - shows two sides of the same coin, of the same story, one from the mother’s POV and one from the child’s; very poetic in certain ways and very sad.
2. Wonder Woman
3. Guardians of the Galaxy 2
4. Ghost in the Shell (Anime)
5. Akira (re-watch)
6. From Up on Poppy Hill - its a really pleasant film, where you honestly really start rooting for the main characters; simple and slice of life-ish but does sink you deep into 1960s Japan.
7. Millenium Actress
8. Your Name
9.  Moonrise Kingdom
10. A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (re-watch)
11. 2001: A Space Odyssey (re-watch)
12. Paprika
13. In the Mood for Love - beautiful colors and cinematography, and although its rather abstract, I think it shows visually the unraveling of loneliness and how people are, whether you are a victim or a perpetrator.
14. Rashomon
15. The Housemaid
16. Fantastic Mr. Fox (re-watch) - this is my favorite movie of all time. It’s hilarious.
17. The Iron Giant (re-watch)
18. Sherlock
19. Riverdale...
20. Digimon Tri
Music (just gonna name the top few - all have great albums):
1. Beatenberg
2. Vance Joy
3. Alohaha
4. Declan Mckenna
5. Vulfpeck
I honestly thought I wouldn’t have this many, but this is a nice surprise. Happy Tuesday!
