Back to the Future
With most movies I’ve seen, I have a fairly good memory of the first time I saw them, especially if they had an impact on me. I don’t remember the first time I saw Back to the Future too well though. I’m not sure whether it was a rental, or on TV. Either way, I enjoy the trilogy now just as much as I did back then, even if the ways I enjoy them have changed. Just a heads up, there will be a lot…

Tootie Heath Plays "Night In Tunisia" W/ Emmet Cohen
REMEMBERING ALBERT “TOOTIE” HEATH MAY 31, 1935 – APRIL 3, 2024
A TRIBUTE TO THE SWINGING DRUMMER Drummer Albert “Tootie” Heath passed away on April 3, 2024 at the age of 88.
He was born in Philadelphia on May 31, 1935, the younger brother of bassist Percy Heath and saxophonist-arranger-composer Jimmy Heath.
Growing up in a very musical family, Heath gained important experience playing locally and with his brothers.
When he came to New York in 1957, his recording debut was with John Coltrane.
Heath was in great demand throughout his career, and among the more than 250 jazz sessions that he appeared on were albums led by Jimmy Heath, Nina Simone (including her hit version of “I Loves You Porgy”), J.J. Johnson, Cannonball Adderley, Johnny Griffin, Wes Montgomery, the Jazztet, Art Farmer, Benny Golson, Clifford Jordan, Bobby Timmons, Milt Jackson, Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis, Dexter Gordon, Ben Webster, Herbie Hancock, Yusef Lateef, Joe Pass, Roberta Gambarini, and even Anthony Braxton and Roscoe Mitchell.
Tootie teamed up with his siblings as the Heath Brothers starting in the mid-1970s, after Connie Kay’s passing he was the last drummer with the Modern Jazz Quartet, and he led five albums of his own.
A very reliable and swinging drummer who was quite versatile, Albert “Tootie” Heath was a strong asset in every group in which he appeared.
Here is Albert “Tootie” Heath being showcased in 2023 with pianist Emmet Cohen and bassist Russell Hall on a rather unusual version of “A Night In Tunisia.”

"The Principal" (1987) is a crime drama directed by Christopher Cain and written by Frank Deese. The film stars Jim Belushi, Louis Gossett Jr., Rae Dawn Chong, and Michael Wright. The 80s had plenty of high school-themed movies. There was no shortage of films released highlighting teenage life. However, producers didn't make many movies dealing with multicultural students in the inner-city. Cain filmed the movie in Oakland, California, at Northgate High School. It was one of the first films to illustrate gang violence and takeovers within a school environment and a precursor to movies like "Dangerous Minds" and "The Substitute."
The film is a fictional story packed with some thrills and action. Michael Wright gives an excellent performance as the movie's antagonist. Buleushi plays the caring principal while struggling to handle a tough school. This movie isn't "Lean On Me" or "Stand and Deliver." But there is some good messaging there.
Director: Christopher Cain Writer: Frank Deese
Starring Jim Belushi, Louis Gossett Jr., Rae Dawn Chong, Michael Wright, J.J. Cohen, Esai Morales, Troy Winbush, Jacob Vargas, Thomas Ryan, Reggie Johnson, Kelly Jo Minter, Ruth Beckford
Storyline Burglary. Drugs Assualt. The students at Brandel High are more than the new principal Rick Latimer (James Belushi), bargained for. Gangs fight to control the school using knives — even guns — when necessary. When Latimer and the head of security (Louis Gossett, Jr.) try to clean up the school and stop the narcotics trade, they run up against a teenage mafia. A violent confrontation on the campus leads to a deadly showdown with the drug dealer's gang and one last chance or Latimer to save his career and life.

Blu-ray Review: King Cohen
Tumblr media
Larry Cohen may not be a household name, but King Cohen - the new documentary profiling the cult filmmaker - makes a strong case that he should be. For the uninitiated, Cohen is the prolific writer-director-producer of The Stuff, It’s Alive, Q: The Winged Serpent, God Told Me To, Black Caesar, and A Return to Salem’s Lot, and the writer of Phone Booth, Cellular, Captivity, and Maniac Cop, among others.
While the genre names who pop up as interview subjects are to be expected, Cohen also counts the likes of J.J. Abrams (Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Star Trek), Martin Scorsese (Taxi Driver, Goodfellas), John Landis (An American Werewolf in London, The Blues Brothers) among his admirers. Abrams open the film with a fun anecdote that illustrates both Cohen's good nature and his steel-trap memory, which helps the documentary's narrative momentum.
Tumblr media
Other collaborators, friends, and fans of Cohen interviewed include Rick Baker (An American Werewolf in London), Eric Bogosian (Under Siege 2: Dark Territory), Barbara Carrera (Never Say Never Again), Joe Dante (Gremlins), Robert Forster (Jackie Brown), Megan Gallagher (Millennium), Mick Garris (The Stand), Yaphet Kotto (Alien), Traci Lords (Blade), Michael Moriarty (Law & Order), Tara Reid (American Pie), Eric Roberts (The Dark Knight), David J. Schow (The Crow), and Fred Williamson (From Dusk Till Dawn), among others.
Cohen himself tells the bulk of his story, from his humble stand-up comedian aspirations, to starting as a TV writer in the '50s and '60s, before making the jump to film. Tired of having his work "ruined" by directors, Cohen decided to step into the director's chair himself with the racially-charged 1972 independent comedy, Bone. Right out of the gate, Cohen demonstrated that he has a message beyond the surface entertainment value, a trend which would continue throughout his career.
Tumblr media
The documentary follows Cohen's filmography chronologically, briefly touching on most of the 20 movies he directed before transitioning back to a writer. The septuagenarian has a devil-may-care attitude, bluntly detailing the highs and lows of his career. The subject matter is interesting, and Cohen has no shortage of fascinating tales to tell, so the documentary is content present the story without digging much beyond the surface.
The audacious filmmaker hopped between genres (though most of his work could be blanketed under exploitation), but each of his offbeat efforts carries an energy that is uniquely Cohen. He knows how to stretch a limited budget, and his scripts often implement social commentary with varying degrees of subtlety. A true maverick, the stories of guerrilla filmmaking and stealing risky shots in highly-public places have to be heard from the source to be believed.
Tumblr media
King Cohen is directed by Steve Mitchell, who's best known to genre fans for writing the '80s cult classic Chopping Mall, but more recently he’s carved out a career for himself in making DVD/Blu-ray extras. It should come as no surprise that his feature debut feels like an extended version of a special feature; a competent and comprehensive collection of no-frills talking-head interviews and film clips.
La-La Land Entertainment's Blu-ray release of King Cohen includes a CD of Joe Kraemer's (Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation) jazzy, propulsive original soundtrack. The documentary will leave you wanting more, and the extras deliver: 47 minutes of deleted footage from Cohen's interviews (including a fun story about the time he nearly worked with Alfred Hitchcock, complete with a spot-on impersonation); 38 minutes of interview footage with other subjects; a brief featurette of Cohen showing off his creature props; a collection of Cohen's pre-recorded introductions from the documentary's festival run; and the trailer.
Tumblr media
King Cohen gives viewers fascinating insight into Cohen's diverse oeuvre. In addition to a new appreciation for his work and introducing me to a couple of hidden gems I hadn't seen before, the documentary makes me want to see Cohen make a new movie. It’s clear from his interviews that he remains sharp, witty, and passionate. Furthermore, the popularity of the genre against the backdrop of our country's political strife seems like the perfect environment in which to yield another Cohen classic. Long live King Cohen.
King Cohen is available now on Blu-ray via La-La Land Entertainment.
