Review: Cool Runnings (1993)
Cool Runnings (1993)
Rated PG for mild language and brief violence

Score: 3 out of 5
Based (very loosely) on the true story of the Jamaican bobsled team that competed at the 1988 Winter Olympics, Cool Runnings is, together with The Mighty Ducks and Air Bud, one of the first movies most people think of when they think of Disney's live-action offerings in the '90s, especially their sports movies. It takes the rules of a real-life sport and, in service to making a family comedy, asks how many giggles it can get out of the rules and quirks of that sport, typically by dropping in a weird twist like, say, a dog playing basketball, or in this case, a bunch of guys from a tropical island nation competing in a quintessential cold-weather sporting event. It's a charming movie that still holds up thirty years later, thanks to a very solid cast led by Leon Robinson and the late John Candy in his final film released during his lifetime, as well as a lighthearted sense of humor that knows it's corny and doesn't care. It's kinda shallow and makes mincemeat of the actual history in order to manufacture drama for its heroes to overcome (there's a reason why "Disneyfication" has been a joke for decades now), but it's a fun, funny sports movie with an interesting hook and some great moments to back it up.
Our protagonists Derice Bannock, Yul Brenner (no relation to the actor), Junior Bevin, and Sanka Coffie are four Jamaican guys who, thanks to some comic mishaps, wind up forming the first Jamaican Olympic bobsled team. Specifically, Derice, Yul, and Junior all dreamed of becoming track stars, but during tryouts for the Olympic national team, Junior tripped and took down Derice and Yul with him, sabotaging all their hopes for the next four years. Derice's friend Sanka, meanwhile, is the best pushcart derby driver in Jamaica, and don't you forget it. Derice, the son of the Olympic champion Ben Bannock, still wants to follow in his father's footsteps, and when he sees a photo of his late father with the former American bobsledder Irving "Irv" Blitzer, who has since retired to Jamaica, he gets the idea to recruit Sanka to form a bobsled team to compete in the upcoming winter games in Calgary, with help from a reluctant Irv (who only agrees because he knew Derice's father) to show them the ropes. Yul and Junior join soon after in order to round out the four-man team, as everybody else at the tryout was scared off by Irv telling them in graphic detail how dangerous the sport was. Up in Calgary, the Jamaicans have to contend with not only the harsh winter weather but also the skepticism and hostility of the other teams and the officials wondering what these four tropical dudes are doing here, while Irv has to grapple with the circumstances that forced him to retire from bobsledding in disgrace back in 1972, circumstances that do nothing to lessen the suspicion that the rest of the Olympic Village (not least of all his former American teammates) has of him and his team.
The Jamaicans all fit into recognizable "family movie hero" archetypes. Derice is the straightforward hero, the team leader out on the track who wants to live up to his father's legacy. Junior, meanwhile, is a rich kid who, as his name suggests, lives in the shadow of his own father, a proud self-made man who has planned out a life for him as an investment banker in America, and wants to forge his own destiny for himself. Yul is the tough guy who blames Junior for dashing his dream of becoming a runner and has to learn how to work as part of a team with the rest of the group. Finally, Sanka is the comic relief, about as stereotypical a "Jamaican dreadlocked rasta" as you can get without getting into the kinds of drug humor that, in the '90s especially, would've bumped this movie's rating past a PG. Their individual arcs are all fairly predictable once you realize what each of their conflicts is, as is their conflict as a group about proving themselves in the top-flight world of winter sports, in which the racial subtext is only explicitly stated in one line but is heavily alluded to in how the Jamaicans are seen as outsiders in the Winter Olympics. (A lot of this was largely invented for the movie, as in real life the Jamaicans were actually welcomed by the other teams simply for having what it took to get there in the first place, not least of all by the East German team, who in this film are presented as antagonists because, well, it was the early '90s and we were still celebrating the fall of communism.) Irv, meanwhile, has to confront how his past obsession with winning at all costs set him up for his greatest failure in a cheating scandal that took his teammates down with him, with Derice especially showing him how there can be dignity in walking away as something other than Number One.
It's all pretty basic afterschool special stuff that you'd expect from Disney, but I can't deny that this movie does it well, thanks largely to how good the cast is. Leon Robinson as Derice, Doug E. Doug as Sanka, Rawle D. Lewis as Junior, and Malik Yoba as Yul made the four bobsledders feel disjointed at the start of the film, a divided team that you feel is about to walk into a meat grinder in Calgary, making their growing camaraderie over the course of the film feel earned until they end the film looking and feeling like champions. John Candy, meanwhile, brought both his brand of humor and a surprising amount of gravitas to Irv, a former champion who failed his team once before and, in the course of training the Jamaicans, learns a thing or two from them along the way. The film's sense of humor was a good-natured mix of physical/slapstick comedy and dad jokes, from the Jamaicans' first reaction to Canadian winter weather at the airport to a running gag where Derice asks Sanka if he's still alive ("nah, man"), and much of it works thanks to how game the entire cast is for all of it. I watched this movie with my father on my birthday as a nostalgic throwback, to my childhood for me and to his "dad years" for him, and even without any children around, this movie did a very good job of making me feel like a kid again.
The Bottom Line
Cool Runnings is quintessential '90s Disney, a bit too shallow for me to call it one of their best films but still a solid, workmanlike family sports comedy that's elevated by its cast. Whether you're an aging, nostalgic millennial like me, a parent with kids of your own, or both, I recommend checking it out.

Cool in Jamaica
Jamaica might not be the first country you think of when you hear "bobsled." Tropical weather, sandy beaches, and a complete lack of snow all make for a pretty great spot to soak up some sun and kick back with jerk chicken... but it sort of makes it the last place that you'd ever want to try learning how to bobsled! You'd expect that from extremely cool places like Canada and Alaska, but Jamaica?
Of course, none of that stopped the Jamaica Nation Bobsleigh Team back in 1988... or in 1992, 1994, 1998, 2002, and even 2014. It just goes to show that all you need is a little passion to follow your dreams! Well, that and a bobsled! If you want to show your passion for bobsledding, whether or not weather permits, then you might want to gather up a few buddies and head to your next costume party wearing this Jamaican Team Bobsled Costume Prop.
Product Details
Based on the team that defied conventions, this Jamaican Team Bobsled Prop is an easy way for you to recreate your favorite bobsled team. The prop is made out of foam and measures a full 78 inches long when unfolded. It features the black, green, and yellow color scheme of the Jamaican Flag and it has "Jamaica" printed on the side of it. Shoulder straps in the front and in the back. Just sling this on over your shoulders and you'll be ready to show the world your determination!
Sled Runnings!
If you have the passions for bobsledding... or just the passion for the Caribbean country, then this Jamaican Team Bobsled Costume is the perfect prop for your next sledding run! Just make sure you gather up 1 to 3 of your best buds to share the prop with you!

How to watch bobsled (2-person) at the Winter Olympics: A guide to understanding and appreciating the sport
Tumblr media
What time is bobsledding on at the Olympics? Plus all the rules, streaming information, listings and more you need.
Bobsledding finds itself in the national spotlight exactly once every four years – right about now, when competitors from around the world go down icy tracks at the Winter Olympics. They’ll do that again in Pyeongchang, South Korea, the site of 2018’s Winter Games.
There are two types of bobsledding in the Olympic program – two-person and four-person. We’re here to talk about the two-sledder variety, which has both a men’s and women’s competition. This will be the 20th Games for two-man bobsledding and the fifth for two-women, which joined the program for the 2002 games in Utah.
The United States has only fared OK in two-person bobsledding. The men have never won gold in the event, while the women have medaled each year but not taken gold since the event’s inaugural year in the women’s program. Germany’s won the last three golds in the men’s competition, and Canada has topped the women’s field the last two times.
What time and how can I watch?
The two-man competition begins on Feb. 18, when there are two preliminary runs at 6:05 a.m. ET and 7:30 a.m. ET. You can stream those here. The medal heats begin at 6:15 a.m. ET the next day, on Feb. 19. You can stream those here, on NBC’s website. You can also live stream NBC, NBCSN, and the Olympic Channel coverage via Fubo.TV on your computer or mobile devices.
The two-women competition begins on Feb. 20, with two runs at 6:05 a.m. ET. You can stream those here. The medal heats begin at 6:40 a.m. on Feb. 21 and can be streamed here.
Why should I quit my job and become a lifelong devotee of two-person bobsledding?
Because bobsledding is cool as hell. That’s not even a Cool Runnings joke, though the 1993 cult classic about the Jamaican bobsled team that competed at the 1988 games in Calgary is an amazing story. Related: the Jamaican women are in the field this year, as is a Nigerian team.
What are the rules of bobsledding? Follow up: What is the weirdest rule of bobsledding?
In this event, it’s pretty simple: Two people get into a sled and ride it down an icy track, trying to get there in a faster time than the opposition. (They don’t go at the same time, because the track is thin and can only accommodate one sled at a time, reasonably.)
The weirdest rule? Probably this one:
“The maximum weight for the sled including the crew, runners and other equipment: 390kg (860 pounds) for 2-man bobsled, 630kg (1,389 pounds) for 4-man bobsled and 325kg (717 pounds) for women’s bobsled.”
What can I talk about to impress the bobsled enthusiast in my life?
If talking about Cool Runnings fails, you can talk about how the team from some country should really consider making some changes to its bobsled lineup. You can sound smart by saying that teams can make substitutions of anyone except the pilot, who’s the one riding up front.
Whose jersey should I buy?
Get yourself a nice, full-body compression suit with the colors of the German flag on it. The Germans are the world’s greatest bobsledding people, generally speaking.
What is the sport’s AMERICA RATING?
A respectable yet restrained 7/10. Americans have won seven bobsledding golds, more than any country except Germany and Switzerland.
What’s the best GIF I can watch from bobsledding?

It’s the blog post that no one asked for, but everyone gets. I’m gonna list of some of the better moments from this year’s Olympics. There were a lot of amazing wins and a ton of history-making moments. There were also a ton of mishaps like Jackson/Timberlake wardrobe malfunctions, bully skaters, poor sports, and Russians doping for curling. (Drugs for curling though. Wowzers, amiright?)  However, unless I find those bad things to be funny, then I probably won’t list them. Let’s focus on the good, huh?
Most of you know that I really don’t like sports and know nothing about them. So why did Annie watch sports every day, all day, for a month, you ask? My dear father answered that perfectly: “You like to binge watch shows. So you binge sports for a month and then you don’t need to see any more sports for another two years.” Yep, that’s real. The Olympics are particularly fun because I go into them with practically zero knowledge of most of the sports or athletes and I come out crying over everyone’s stories and can rant off fun facts for a good ten minutes about figure skating jumps.
Not to mention the fact that the Winter Olympics are completely psychotic. Whose mum let these kids launch themselves over a hundred meters in the air down a mountain or rocket down a track going 80 miles an hour in a sled? It’s a competition of the stupid stuff people do, and I love it.
Let’s do this. First. The gems of the Games, I like to call: Unauthorized Bois™️
There was the streaker in the tutu, just trying to spread Peace+Love, and then the unauthorized man that snuck onto the Opening Ceremony stage, not once but twice. It begs the question…Who’s in charge of security there?  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Snowboarding
First of all, Chloe Kim. Let’s talk about this amazing girl. She won Gold for Team USA, as the youngest woman to win a snowboarding medal in half-pipe. Being a 17-year-old girl, she didn’t want to cry after winning because she worked so hard on her eyeliner and posted these tweets IN BETWEEN HER RUNS.
A blessing to this world. Next, we have the greatest team in snowboarding. The Finnish team aka Team Knitting. They were caught doing their favorite pastime back in Sochi and stepped up their game this year. The cameras caught their coach nonchalantly knitting while sending his boarders down the slope. It was shared later that it is not just the coach that does it but the whole team gets together and knits and is currently knitting a blanket for their president’s newborn son. IS THAT NOT ADORABLE?! I wanna be Finnish. 🇫🇮💙
And of course, the pride and joy of America. The swearing 17-year-old boy who binge-watched Brooklyn Nine-Nine the night before his run causing him to oversleep, borrow someone else’s jacket, and win USA’s first Gold of the season after starting in last.
Disclaimer: No, I will not be talking about Shaun White. He’s out, man. I’d say to move over for Red and Chloe, but they pushed him out with their skills all on their own, son.
Bobsledding You know what it issssss. Bobsledding, the second best Winter Games sport. (Fight me if you disagree, have you not seen Cool Runnings??)
And you can bet I’m gonna talk about the two greatest bobsled teams. Because the Olympics are more than just winning medals. ✌🏻
The Jamaican Bobsled Team, Women’s Edition: It was history in the making as the first female bobsled team from Jamaican made their debut this year. There was a ton of scandal around it because their coach quit while they were AT the games, and took away their sled. But! In the true spirit of the Olympics, Red Stripe (the beer company) bought them a brand new sled so they could continue to compete. 🙌🏻 Bonus: They danced it out during the Opening Ceremony with no cares. #Respect
The Nigerian Bobsled Team: Okay. These ladies are my favorite of the whole year and all events. Made up of runners, these women from Nigeria decided to become not only the first women’s team from Nigeria, and not just the first bobsled team from Nigeria in general, but also the first bobsled team from AFRICA. Mmmhmmm. These ladies rule. They built a homemade wooden bobsled and started a Gofundme account that had the whole world pitching in so they could make it to the Olympics. If that isn’t the meaning of the Olympics, then I don’t know what is? #CoolRunnings2
Figure Skating
Ahhh, yess. My favorite. Let’s get the obvious out of the way: Scott Moir and Tessa Virtue. We all love them. No one was surprised when they got Gold. Moving on.
Yuzuru Hanyu is also pretty obvious, but how can I not talk about him? Two consecutive Golds in a row. Beautiful. The poise. The style. I can’t. Since I could go on about his skills forever, I’m going to address how much of a drama king he was. Here Yuzu comes in like two days late with an ARMY of bodyguards like some suave mob boss and stole all the media’s attention while simultaneously hardly talking to anyone at all. THEN after having a huge media blackout prior to the Games, he shows up late at night to practice with every camera in the country watching him and does like two simple jumps, bows, and walks off without saying anything. What a guy. Even with all this, he was still the sweetest person ever, so at least he’s not mean about being the Olympic King.
My mood: Nathan Chen walking towards the women’s bathroom on accident on live television. This kid. 🤣 Nathan Chen didn’t medal, but he made so many records that he’s still a winner. Completing INSANE tricks that had never bee done before, he blew away the world with his quad jumps. However, and I may get flack for it, I am glad he didn’t win anything yet (it’ll come) because he’s so young and I’d hate for him to get cocky over it. He’s got plenty of time to master ALL of the parts to figure skating and not just the quad flips.
Bonus Favorites
-The Rio-famous Tongan in the Opening Ceremony who learned how to ski just so he could go to the Winter Olympics, oil up and carry his nation’s flag shirtless in negative degree weather. Boy, you crazy.
-Doubles Luge became a sport this year (why?!) and right before two men shot down an icy slope whilst laying on top of each other, one man looked at the camera and shouted, “Risk it for the biscuit, baby!”
-Some teams represented with SUPER DOPE outfits including the alpine skiers from Mexico, and the Norwegian curling team.
What a time to be alive. I loved it all. Now I’m good until the summer Olympics.
*insert cheeky peace sign* ✌🏻 Bless.

Jamaica's first women's Olympic bobsled team just made history
It's bobsled time!
The Jamaican women's bobsled team made their Olympic debut on Tuesday, becoming the first women's team from Jamaica to take part in the competition.
Teammates Jazmine Fenlator-Victorian and Carrie Russell had a tough time making it to the games after losing their coach, sponsors, and sled shortly before the competition. However, with some help from the Jamaican beer company Red Stripe, the team was able to secure a sled and make it to the Olympics.
