Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (2022)
Tumblr media
If Rian Johnson and Daniel Craig collaborate on a Benoit Blanc mystery every two or three years in perpetuity, I would be perfectly fine with that arrangement.  Whether Knives Out originated the current wave of whodunnit flicks, I cannot be sure, but Johnson is certainly better at capturing the spirit of the genre while putting his stamp on it than anything produced by Kenneth Branagh or the likes.  With the Netflix deal, production here gets a notable bump, but Johnson manages to work with the scale and avoid the having film collapse into bloat and Grey Man style blandness.  But I guess that’s what you get with an assured captain at the helm.
As with the original, the heart of both the film’s narrative and its charm is in the ensemble cast.  The group here are relatively smaller than the Drysdale clan, so the film is able to lend each character more of a backstory and relationship to the central billionaire tech mogul.  The result is a twisting web of mutual hatred and dependency, Miles Bron’s hangers-on swallowing a bitter pill in exchange for the payout of money and influence.  But that’s a precarious situation to put oneself into, especially on a private island.  Every cast member shines, helmed by Daniel Craig’s return as Benoit Blanc and an alternately cool and frustrated Janelle Monáe.  Dave Bautista makes the most of his appearance and his speedo as a Red Pill type YouTuber Duke Cody, and Kate Hudson gets to swing for the fences as airheaded influencer Birdie Jay.  Kathryn Hahn is perfectly calibrated in her role as an upward-climbing politician.  Edward Norton brings the group together just in time for his house of cards to collapse, revealing his essential idiocy.
Perhaps the film’s biggest weakness aside from a first act which is slow to get off the ground is its “in the moment”-ness.  This was an issue in the first, with some of the characters seeming a bit like “hello fellow kids” inside jokes about Zoomers in the name of screenplay expediency.  Here, there are a few too many cameos and name-drops which just felt like a bit of an excuse to get more names in for a bit of an “oh I recognized that person” thrill moment.  That said, Stephen Sondheim and Angela Lansbury were fun nods to their association with murder mysteries, and poignant inclusions in light of their passing.  And Hugh Grant was perfectly acceptable as Benoit’s “roommate.”  I’d be fine if they trimmed some of the other scenes in favor of the pair engaging in, ah, “roommate activities.”
As in the first, costume and production design are absolutely on point.  Everything everyone wears, especially Janelle Monáe, is both iconic and very indicative of their character.  Kate Hudson’s ludicrous fishnet “COVID facemask” when the group all gather on the pier is a perfect piece of costume-based characterization.  The vapidness of Bron becomes apparent through his crass displays of excess in interior design, famous paintings (likely originals) hanging up everywhere with no sense of taste or thought in their exhibition.  Johnson nods to Hitchcock both in the cheeky tone of his work, blending the macabre and the humorous, but also in his use of closeups and montage.  Especially apparent is the scene when Helen discovers the hiding place of the napkin with the original business plans that Bron stole.  Monáe’s face is bathed with colored light, evocative of Vertigo, and objects loom large in the frame as they do in the likes of Notorious.  Then again, sometimes he’s just cheeky—the film lingers intentionally on a statue’s large ass after everyone else has left frame because it probably made Johnson giggle like a schoolboy.
THE RULES
SIP
Someone says ‘disruptor’.
Birdie screams.
Cameo or name-drop moment.
Someone flips the bird.
BIG DRINK
Jump in the timeline.
The Joseph Gordon Levitt DONGGGG noise happens.
Someone references COVID-19.
A gunshot is heard.

Alexis Denisof and Amy Acker in Much Ado About Nothing (Joss Whedon, 2012) Cast: Amy Acker, Alexis Denisof, Nathan Fillion, Clark Gregg, Reed Diamond, Fran Kranz, Jillian Morgese, Sean Maher, Spencer Treat Clark, Riki Lindholme, Ashley Johnson, Emma Bates, Tom Lenk, Nick Kocher, Brian McElhaney. Screenplay: Joss Whedon, based on a play by William Shakespeare. Cinematography: Jay Hunter. Production design: Cindy Chao, Michele Yu. Film editing: Daniel S. Kaminsky, Joss Whedon. Music: Joss Whedon. Fleet, light, and lucid, Joss Whedon's film of Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing is made without undue reverence or pretense, which is pretty much the way Shakespeare ought to be filmed -- or at least his romantic comedies, which have so much in common with the classic Hollywood screwball comedies. Amy Acker, who should be a bigger star, is a pitch-perfect Beatrice, and Alexis Denisof is well-matched as Benedick. The obvious comparison here is with Kenneth Branagh's 1993 film version of the play, a more elaborate and star-studded affair, but Whedon's film, shot mostly in and around his house in Santa Monica, more than holds its own in comparison. It actually comes off a little better in casting Sean Maher as the villainous Don John, where Branagh's choice of Keanu Reeves in the role shows off some of that actor's limitations. The weakest casting in Whedon's version is Nathan Fillion as Dogberry, which Branagh bettered with Michael Keaton. Fillion is too bulky and handsome an actor to play the clown, and he struggles to make Dogberry quite as fatuous as he should be, whereas Keaton relished every one of the character's malapropisms. But as Dogberry himself put it, "Comparisons are odorous." Fran Kranz makes more of the somewhat flimsy role of Claudio than is usual, and it's fun to see Clark Gregg step out of the Marvel universe into the Shakespearean one.

Coming Attractions August 2022
Tumblr media
As usual, we present monthly previews of new movies being released. These are the movies that will be hitting your local cinemas (and streaming services) this month:
August 5th
Bullet Train - Brad Pitt stars in this action comedy from director David Leitch based on a Japanese novel (published in English as Bullet Train). Rounding out the impressive cast are Joey King, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Brian Tyree Henry, Hiroyuki Sanada, Michael Shannon, Bad Bunny, Zazie Beetz, Logan Lerman, and last, but not least, Sandra Bullock.
Prey - Director Dan Trachtenberg brings the Predator series to Hulu and the 18th century with Prey.
Thirteen Lives - Hitting Prime today after a week in theaters is the true story of the 2018 Tham Luang cave rescue in Thailand. The film is directed by Ron Howard and stars Viggo Mortensen, Colin Farrell, and Joel Edgerton.
Luck - This animated film comes to AppleTV+ today and explores the nature of good and bad luck. Luck features a voice cast that includes Simon Pegg, Jane Fonda, and Whoopi Goldberg.
Easter Sunday - Comedian Jo Koy leads this film about a dysfunctional Filipino American family on Easter Sunday. Yes, this movie comes out in August. Jimmy O. Yang, Tia Carrere, and Tiffany Haddish also star in this comedy from director Jay Chandrasekhar.
August 12th
Emily the Criminal - Aubrey Plaza breaks bad in this crime drama from writer/director John Patton Ford. The film premiered at Sundance earlier this year to wide acclaim.
Day Shift - Jamie Foxx and David Franco hunt vampires in this action comedy for Netflix.
Secret Headquarters - Owen Wilson’s secret identity is in peril when his daughter and her friends find his superhero hideout in this film coming to Paramount+.
August 19th
Beast - Idris Elba is on the run from a man-hunting lion in this survival thriller. It is up to him to protect his daughters and Sharlto Copley from this mighty beast.
Orphan: First Kill - Coming to Paramount+ is this prequel to the 2009 horror film Orphan. Once again, Isabella Fuhrman stars as the titular orphan, however, this time around she needs a body double to appear as a child since she is 13 years older.
August 26th
Samaritan - Sylvester Stallone is the missing superhero Samaritan in this Amazon Prime film that sounds a lot like Finding Forrester if you traded literature for superheroes. Count me in!
Breaking - Based on a true story, John Boyega plays a former Marine in dire financial trouble who robs a bank. Michael Kenneth Williams co-stars in one of his final film roles.
August 31st
Three Thousand Years of Longing - Tilda Swanson and Idris Elba star in this dark fantasy from director George Miller.
Now for a quick look ahead to September, my top picks for next month are Hocus Pocus 2, See How They Run, and Don’t Worry Darling.
