Stargirl 1x03: "Icicle"
Happy birthday, Michael Nankin!
This episode made me fall in love with the show (and was the first I saw on its premiere day) so naturally, there would be a lot of gifs for this set. Hence why it took so long! So... much... compression.

Anyway I want Camney to be happy. I want the JSA happy. I want Courtney and the girls to have breakfast together the morning before finals. I want Cameron to step back from his family and still be kind. I want Cindy to be able to feel safe and not just on a surface level. I want the Crocks back and happy. I want Mike and Pat to have a guys day out. I want Rick to get a hug from the people he cares about. I want to see Yolanda healing from her trauma. I want to see Yolanda taking a walk along main street and feeling comfortable with who she is. I want Courtney and Cameron and all the legacies tackling the truths of who they are and I want them to not have to deal with the mistakes of those who came before. I want Beth to befriend a younger student and show them kindness. I want Cameron to paint a mural in the high school for Joey Zarick.

Hournite Week 2022: Day 4 - Jealousy
In this version, Joey didn't die and later on joined the JSA.
Rick didn't notice before, why he's noticing now?? Beth and Joey were friends way before all the superhero stuff, so there's no reason to be surprised that they were hang out and talking more often. But why does this closeness bother him so much? Why everytime they come together on the pat stop his heart aches a little? Why does that annoy him??? They're just friends!! Right??
Meanwhile:
- So... When will you talk to Rick? He's obviously jealous of us together 😬 - Joey asked, previously knowing about this oblivious pair by Yolanda and Court.
- Jealousy? What no, he just my friend 🥰😍☺️ - Said Beth lying to herself.
- Right... Friends... 🌝🤨
I don't know where I was going with this... but at least there's some context here 🙈 Also, didn't want to post this one, I didn't liked, but it's here anyway 🥴

DC's Stargirl 3.02 "Chapter Two: The Suspects" has aired on the CW, and I'm here to talk about it.
Episode 2 baby!!
A little flashback to begin with, fun. Can we talk about how fancy Gambler's little trailer is? And he's being staked out by Sportsmaster, also fun. Sometimes ex-coworkers just need to beat the shit out of each other. And Sportsmaster definitely came to murder this bitch. I like how we're getting these little gaps filled in. And the Shade has come to play too! Now he could do the kind of damage we saw at the end of last weeks episode. But similarly to Cindy, I don't think he'd do that much damage when he doesn't have to, and I doubt he'd need to with Gambler. I wonder if these flashbacks will become a standard of this season.
I really do believe Cindy. I think they're right to be sus of her, but I don't think she did it. Honestly, I think Starman did it. And I don't believe this is Starman.
Now, what are you up to Cindy? Is she trying to undo what Dragon King did to her?
Something about Tigress trying to fit in is so funny. She joined a rotary club! I can tell I'm going to love this subplot.
Big fan of this interrogation.
If this is the real Starman, he's a massive dick. I don't think I want someone like him as a hero. And he's kind of a shitty influence.
Omg Cameron. It's like he can't even do his art anymore.
Barbara and Paula trying to bake together!!!
"The killer has many names" seriously Thunderbolt? Gods, I love/hate genie logic.
Something about Shade living in Zarick's house still gets me to this day. I miss my boy Joey. But thank you Shade, you've got a good point! Why would he make a big show of it? We know he could get away with it unnoticed, so why wouldn't he if he really did kill Gambler? But he and Sylvester are unnecessarily assholes to each other.
Does Courtney have a stronger connection to the Staff than Sylvester does? She just ripped it out of his hands, and he was holding on tight. When he got it from her, she had a loose grip. And he seemed surprised that she managed to get it.
The biggest hint that this isn't the real Starman, no man would ever have such a profound realization about his own problems! (I only jest [a little]).
At least Shade acknowledges his massive ego. The green in his powers lately, a result of his fight with Jenni last season? She had some black in hers too for a bit if I remember correctly.
"So who else is there?" Someone you haven't met.
Oh shit, Cindy has the laptop!
Before they find out? Before they find out what?? Did they do it???
I suppose all these questions and more will be answered next week on DC's Stargirl 3.03 "Chapter Three: The Blackmail" (???)

Six Starry Reasons why DC's Stargirl works!
Tumblr media
Hello, and welcome to the House of Milesverse. Today, our subject is DC's action television series, Stargirl. It premiered on May 18th, 2020, and ended on December 7th, 2023.
I think Stargirl stands out as an underrated gem in the live-action catalog. It's a fun, cheesy series that isn't afraid to embrace the silliness of superheroes. In addition, it has some surprisingly heartfelt moments that just work.
The Justice Society is full of personality.
Tumblr media
The Justice Society is traditionally known as the world's first team of superheroes. Even in real life, they hold that title. The JSA are golden-age heroes who just have this authentic feeling about them. It is what I enjoy about them because they just feel like classic heroes.
The JSA of this series is based on the younger mantle-holders. They are the next generation working to fight against crime. Naturally, they still show their inexperience at times.
Our roster includes:
The brave Courtney Whitmore, whose chosen by the Cosmic Staff to become Stargirl.
The once-popular student Yolanda Montez, who after a life-ruining scandal, becomes the heroic Wildcat.
The talkative and tech-savvy Beth Chapel, who becomes the latest Dr. Mid-Nite after stumbling upon a pair of hi-tech goggles.
The angsty Rick Tyler, who takes on an hourglass that belonged to Hourman, his father, and succeeds him.
The team is also led by Pat Dugan, a veteran hero and sidekick to the Star-Spangled Kid. He pilots the S.T.R.I.P.E. armor, a large mechanical robot. With it, he's able to overpower the villains with super strength.
Overall, the team all has their own quirks and interesting gimmicks. What I love about them is that they are all very different in their own way. Yet, they come together when it matters most to save the day.
The Injustice Society is too cool.
Tumblr media
Well, we talked about the heroes, should we just avoid talking about the villains? I think not, the Injustice Society is a fun cast of antagonists. They bring a lot to the series through their impact.
When we look at the Injustice Society, we really have to look at the most instrumental player. Icicle is a chilling antagonist whose goals would create complete utopian rule over the country. He is scary in the way that he presents himself. As a cold-hearted businessman, he's not above using his powers to ice his teammates.
Icicle's best-demonstrated scene is his murder of Joey Zarick. William Zarick was his father, and he was unwilling to battle against Stargirl. He abandoned his post, and because of that, Icicle chose to punish him. He killed his son, and then killed him afterwards.
Icicle's personality is almost indistinguishable from a monster. Beneath his pleasant veil, he's willing to make America better by changing their minds - literally. However, he's also willing to kill as many men, women, and children to do this.
The other members of the Injustice Society of America are also standouts. Characters like Brainwave and Dragon King can be genuinely unnerving to look at. Then we get The Gambler, who proves to be a dangerous threat when it comes to technology. He's also got a very fun accent to listen to.
I think the second-best performance from the Injustice Society are Tigress and Sportsmaster. They are genuinely fun villains who really love each other. Heck, they love their daughter enough to escape prison and see her game. More than that, they even try to become heroes in season 3... It does not go well for them.
Either way, the Injustice Society makes for a gang of fun, villainous personalities.
The family element is just TOO heartwarming
Tumblr media
It's on the CW, of course, there would be drama. This appeals to teenagers after all. However, with drama there also comes a dozen heartwarming moments.
The episode where Courtney Whitmore actually meets her dad is beautiful. This entire time, Courtney believed that her dad was the original Starman. This was because Sylvester Pemberton died on the day that her dad had gone missing.
In actuality, this is not the truth. Courtney's real dad is Sam Kurtis, the man who abandoned her and Barbara. He only returns to reconnect with his daughter and regain her locket. All he wanted to do was just sell the locket and gain some easy cash.
Naturally, Pat sends him on his way out with a parting gift - his fist. I love Pat because he treats Courtney as more than just a stepdaughter. He cares about Courtney's well-being, and he's demonstrated this numerous times.
In general, the family cares deeply about one another. More than that, they also care about the rest of the JSA kids. They really do represent the best in people, and I love that for them.
Eclipso is scary as all hell
Tumblr media
I'm not lying to you here; Eclipso really IS scary. He's a demented otherworldly entity who feeds on fear and hatred. Eclipso spends most of the arc actively taunting the heroes.
He's a lot like Freddy Krueger because he spends his time using your fears against you. He mocks you and makes you feel weak. I love him for it because it also makes him memorable. Unlike the Injustice Society? Eclipso is far more out of the heroes' power range.
I also love how Eclipso regularly alternates between forms. Most of his appearances are through either his true state or as a little child. It really sells the demonic Pennywise-esque angle that they were going for.
Pat Dugan is STRIPE, and that's cool.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Remember when I said that Pat Dugan punched out Courtney's real dad?
Yeah, he gets to do a LOT of other cool stuff as well. Pat Dugan is a hero throughout the entire season. You can doubt it all you want, but you can't disagree that Pat Dugan is one of the best in the series. He may not have started out as a hero, but he has the heart of one.
What I love about Pat is that he's the underdog. He's seen as the sidekick, but he's actually a capable fighter. Heck, he's a mechanic with a penchant for technology. He created the S.T.R.I.P.E. suit all by himself, and somehow modified it from a car.
And? He's a cheerful bumbling dad who tries his best to help people. He's an interesting character in his own way, and I think the show does right by him. I wish that his car was real because I would love a giant robot mecha.
The Staff is just full of personality
Tumblr media
And last but surely not least - the COSMIC STAFF itself. It's full of personality, and it radiates kindness. Also, it practically radiates in general since, yeah, cosmic radiation. Poor Cosmo here was left in a crate for who knows how long.
Ever since he met Courtney, he's been standing right by her side. While she may have doubts about herself, the staff chose her for a reason. She is a brave, compassionate leader who never stops fighting the good fight.
What I love the most about the staff is its general expressiveness. Unlike the comics, it is a sentient piece of technology that has its own feelings. It can move of its own accord, and interact with the world. Naturally, we also get scenes where it pulls Courtney into the action itself. I like how this idea has so much potential for comedic effect.
Consensus: Stargirl is sure to leave you seeing stars!
Tumblr media
What's not to love about Stargirl? It's a series with nice costumes, emotional stakes, and great action. Our main characters are fairly fleshed out and capable of bouncing off of each other. It really is a series for kids, and I like that about it.
Stargirl shines brightest when it's a mix of superhero action and family entertainment. I ended up binge-watching this series a few months ago. I was quickly blown away by the level of quality, and I have become a fan of the series since.
I am sad that Stargirl came to an end last year. Although, I think it's better if the show did end at this current stage. I would not want to see the show rot into something worse.
NEXT TIME: Let's get Dangerous with Devil Dinosaur!
Tumblr media
I hope you enjoyed this Star-Spangled lesson about the Stargirl series! I'll return once in a blue Moon - Girl. If you didn't know it then now you know, I'll be tackling a neat review for Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur!

AU where William Zarick still dies, but Joey and Denise live!
“Denise, wait,” Pat said before he could stop himself. He weighed the risk, and let it go.
“No, I’m sorry. I really shouldn’t have said anything,” the widow moved to roll up the window. In the passenger seat, her cat miaowed.
“Is it about how your son really died?” Pat blurted
She stared at him from the driver’s seat, the road forgotten. “What?”
“I was there. Technically. Kinda. Look, telling me whatever it was isn’t going to put me in any more danger than I’ve already got myself into, I think.”
“You know, then.” I wasn’t a question. “William always said it was in the root of this town. That’s why we moved here.”
“Why don’t you come inside?” Pat asked. “You can tell me…whatever it is you know.  I…don’t think I’ve got the best track record keeping people safe, but I’ll try.”
The car engine idled, and then Denise turned the key, shutting it off. Her steps were uneasy. Pat could feel the uncertainty of grief in her steps. he reached out an arm, an offer of support. She didn't take it. She sat heavily on the couch in the Pitstop, not caring about the grease stained rag draped over the back.
"I don't know much. William didn't want to tell me. He said it was better if I didn't worry. But I'm a politician's wife. Was. Widow. I-- it's what I've always done. Listened and worried. So I know, some.  Dr. King, he's in a coma, but he was in my house a few days ago.  William made him upset. And then Jordan..."
"Jordan?" Pat asked. He'd heard the name... but where?
"Jordan Mahkent. He runs the American Dream. He's part of this. I don't know how, but he is. Maybe he's in charge. The day Joey--that morning, he was waiting for William.   I don't know if it was a--a threat, or--but he knows. and I can't stay in this town with him here."
"Alright," Pat said, quiet. If Barb's boss was involved, that was it. No matter what Courtney said, the time for secrets was done.  They had to figure out a game plan that got everyone out of this alive.
Everyone else, anyways.
"Mrs...." he stopped. " Denise. Have you ever heard of the Injustice Society of America?"
she blinked. "I've only lived in this small town for 7 years," she said. "I haven't had my head in the sand my whole life. but wh--" she stopped. " you don't think..."
"Dr. King is Brainwave. " Pat said, wondering if he was the one signing her death warrant and not the other way around. " and your husband... I'd have to say...."
"No. I.. know who he was. All his stage magic. None of it was stage tricks. I knew he'd... done things. I just thought it was over. That it was smaller."
"If it helps, he, uh, only tried to kill me once," Pat said.
"I don't think it does."
"Right," Pat said, awkwardly. "look, we're... we're going to figure this out."
"we?" she asked. " the two of us? against...."
"well.my wife, once I tell her. And..." he pinched his lips in a sigh. "And the new JSA."
"They're... reforming?"
"You could say that."
Denise nodded. "alright. I'll stay and help. but I want your word on something."
"Depends on what it is," Pat said, having been tricked three times too many by Mike in that way.
"When we find out who killed my family. I want to kill them." Any mousishness had melted away in that sentence.
"If that's what it comes to," Pat said, hoping that it wouldn't, and thinking of the stain that have never come out of Sylvester's suit, not till the day Courtney had cut it to size.
-
Halfway across town, Beth Chapel looked around the basement room and beamed. "There we go. Litterbox, digbox, nest, toys, fresh water, pellets, and broccoli stems for a treat!" her eyes widened, and she dove for the floor, where the white rabbit she'd rescued from the bridge wreck was mauling one of the care books she'd checked out of the library.
"Oh, no," she said, checking "The Complete Guide to Raising Healthy Rabbits" over. Toothmarks dented some of the title, and she winced at the uneven bumps under her fingers.  There had to be a chapter on how to keep the destruction to a minimum. Not that she worried her parents would notice or care that she'd adopted a bunny, but that she couldn't disappoint the town librarian like this.
Carefully, she sat, waiting to see if the bunny might approach her. She knew better than to just pick it--him--up.
He twitched his nose at her, then hopped to the food bowl, picked it up in his teeth, and sent it clattering.  Before she could scramble for the broom, she froze.
The bunny wasn't kicking pellets everywhere for the sake out it, like she'd thought. One by one, he was carrying them into place.
J. a lopsided O. E.
Beth held her breath as the rabbit made a wonky looking lowercase y and sat back on fluffy haunches.
"Oh my god." Beth whispered. "Joey? You're Joey's rabbit? He had real magic?"
He kicked his dish at her, the metal clattering across the floor with a hollow ringing sound.
