I watched The Batman yesterday, aka Battinson, and that sure was a lot of movie. About 45 minutes too much movie, imo, though I thought it did some interesting things. I found this Bat more recognizable than Bale's, and I thought the movie had several excellent scenes in it, even if they were mostly exposition dumps - they were fraught exposition dumps and always felt like they might explode into violence. He and Zoe Kravitz had nice Bat/Cat chemistry, I liked Andy Serkis as a very under-utilized Alfred, and Jeffrey Wright was good as Jim Gordon. John Tuturro was really good as Carmine Falcone. Bruce Wayne was...pretty much nonexistent, which is unfortunate (for his kids anyway ;), but at least it wasn't another origin story. It also had some really excellent scene composition on the rare occasion when I could actually see what was happening - I didn't think the car chase was that great but I loved the aftermath, with Batman ominously approaching, backlit by FIRE and the score doing a thing that probably wasn't supposed to remind me of the Imperial March but absolutely did (AtLA did a similar thing with French horns, I think? for the Fire Nation?). Also, Gotham looked much more recognizable as a place people live even though it's a shithole than it ever did in the Nolan movies.

MOVIES SET DURING DEPRESSION ERA U.S.

1.  “The Group” (1933) - This movie is an adaptation of Mary McCarthy’s novel about a group of friends and Vassar College graduates between 1933 and 1940.   Sidney Lumet directed.

2.  “Bonnie and Clyde” (1967) - Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway starred in this biopic about the infamous Depression-era bank robbers, Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow.  Arthur Penn directed.

3.  “Sounder” (1972) - Martin Ritt directed this adaptation of William H. Armstrong’s 1969 novel about the struggles of an African American sharecropper family in the Deep South, during the Depression.  Paul Winfield, Cicely Tyson and Kevin Hooks starred.

4.  “Paper Moon” (1973) - Ryan and Tatum O’Neal starred in this comedy-drama about a pair of grifters on a road trip in the Midwest, during the Depression.  Peter Bogdanovich directed.

5.  “The Sting” (1973) - Paul Newman and Robert Redford starred in this Best Picture winner about a group of grifters who set up a major con against a crime lord responsible for the death of a friend.  George Roy Hill directed.

6.  “The Untouchables” (1987) - Brian De Palma directed this account of U.S. Treasury Agent Elliot Ness’ investigation into crime lord Al Capone’s bootlegging operation in Chicago, during the last years of Prohibition.  Kevin Costner, Sean Connery, Charles Martin Smith, Andy Garcia and Robert De Niro starred.

7.  “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” (2000) - Joel and Ethan Coen wrote and directed this satire set prison escapees in 1937 Mississippi, which was loosely based on Homer’s poem, “The Odyssey”.  George Clooney, John Tuturro and Tim Blake Nelson starred.

8.  “Road to Perdition” (2002) - Sam Mendes directed this adaptation of Max Allen Collins’ 1998 graphic novel about a mob enforcer, who seeks vengeance for the deaths of his wife and younger son, while protecting his older son, a murder witness.  Set in 1931 Illinois, the movie starred Tom Hanks, Tyler Hoechlin, Jude Law and Paul Newman.

9.  “Seabiscuit” (2003) - Gary Ross starred in this adaptation of Laura Hillenbrand’s 1999 book about the famous California racehorse from the late 1930s.  Tobey Maguire, Jeff Bridges, Chris Cooper and Elizabeth Banks starred.

10. “Cinderella Man” (2005) - Russell Crowe starred in this biopic about boxer James J. Braddock and his struggles to survive the Depression via the sport.  Directed by Ron Howard, the movie co-starred Renee Zellweger and Paul Giamatti.

11.  “Public Enemies” (2009) - Johnny Depp and Christian Bale starred in this biopic about the exploits of Depression-era gangster John Dillinger and the efforts of F.B.I. Special Agent Melvin Purvis to capture him.  Michael Mann directed.

OK so I watched The Batman last night and I think this movie was made for ME SPECIFICALLY. Spoilers maybe under the cut.

First off, the opening scene really fooled me. I thought that was baby Bruce! I thought that guy was Thomas Wayne! Because ALL Batman movies start out with that! And then Bruce comes stomping down the hallway with all the cops and I was like wait what?? Excellent subversion. You never even SEE the Waynes much less their murder and I think it adds a layer of haunting memory. It’s obvious that they played Ave Maria at the funeral, the way Bruce reacts to the song.

The gothic architecture?? No longer is Gotham just Chicago, or a featureless airport. There was so much care put into the sets and architecture and I just LOVED IT. The rising/setting sun scenes on the water were gorgeous. And the RAIN. AMAZING. The city felt so real - and anyway Gotham’s the one Selina means when she says Bruce is already spoken for.

Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne was PERFECT. He’s a master of tiny little facial expressions (the barely-there sneer during the car chase), and his flat dead eyed stare holds so much repressed emotion, it’s impressive. Love that Bruce is a wet rat drowning in too-big t-shirts and melted eyeliner.

His Batman is So Weird?? Big brick shithouse with SPURS coming out from the shadows. Wanders around crime scenes saying Nothing but leading police to clues. And I think his journey from an obviously emotional, sensitive guy who’s repressing all that with his quest for vengeance to someone who can express affection to Alfred, who can help with direct action, was really well done.

The Riddler, what a creep. Someone read 1984 and took the wrong parts to heart. I find it interesting and gratifying that he’s obviously a stand-in for all these dangerous online white men who believe they’ve been unfairly wronged and that’s everyone else’s problem. The militia at the end actually really freaked me out because it’s not too far off from reality.

The color story in this movie is inextricable from the character development. It’s SO refreshing to see a movie with some actual good lighting and color and interest, in opposition to the gray dullness of Marvel - I’m going to draw some of these scenes as color studies. Bruce is almost always lit in sharply contrasted black and pale white light, but as he understands who Batman needs to be there’s introduction of reds and oranges, culminating in that final gorgeous scene with the flare.

The MUSIC! Dirge-like horns (and saxophones with the melody, thank you Giancchino), mixed with choral elements, and a plodding reverb bass line pulled straight from Nirvana? It’s great.

Other random thoughts: Zoe Kravitz is incredibly gorgeous and I cannot blame Bruce for going completely non-verbal when she’s around. John Tuturro did a great job playing a creepy Godfather-type Machiavellian kingpin. Jim Gordon beloved. BELOVED. Love the ONE guy with a really strong Chicago accent and everyone else sounds regular. BRUCE DRIVES MY FAVORITE MUSCLE CAR OF ALL TIME: 1963 Corvette Stingray! THIS MOVIE IS FOR MEEEEEEEEE anyway I had a great time props to Matt Reeves and everybody.

Also I think Bruce should get to give that kid a hug it’s what they both deserve.

 "Sabbath's Theater" at the Romulus Linney Theater is a stream of consciousness play, John Turturro gives a masterclass for one hour and forty minutes. Without an intermission it is he who locks in the audience. The play which is written by Philip Roth is as raw, edgy as anything Kafka would write. The people who came to watch were artistic, even Bohemian. "Sabbath's Theater is a throw back to the days of La MAMA, Truck and Warehouse Theater. Directed by Jo Bonney, nothing is left to the imagination... it is sex and sex and sex.

 After thirteen years with his Yugoslavian mistress, Drenka, (Elizabeth Marvel), Mickey Sabbath (Turturro) spirals out of control after her death. He is now haunted by the ghosts of his past and present. His mother encourages him to commit suicide rather than continue living such a shameful and depraved life. Returning to the people and places he once knew, Sabbath returns to New York City to attend a funeral for his old producer and friend, Linc. In search of his ex-wife Nikki, he meets up with another old friend and producer of his Sabbath's Theater, Norman (Jason Kravits).

 Mickey who was once regarded as a great puppeteer has become unrecognizable; steep in his lifelong debauchery, he was fired from the school where he taught for having an affair with a student. His second wife, Rosanna has thrown him out and is now living with a woman. She is a recovering alcoholic and thinks Mickey can only hurt her.

  With a small stage, Arnulfo Maldonado does a brilliant job with his scenic design (costumes as well). The projection design opens up the stage and makes it bigger than it is (Alex Basco Koch); the lighting is equally brilliant by Jeff Croiter; his cool whites and blues gives off the feeling of despair, he brings the raw, edgy feel to this well acted play.Mikaal Sulaiman too brings an eery feel with his sound design. In the adaptation by Ariel Levy and John Tuturro, however, we sometimes get confused where physically Sabbath is. It wasn't always clear if he was in Massachusetts, New York City, or even at which stage of his life he is in.

 "Sabbath's Theater" with its edgy and other worldly feel is deep, resonant and welcomed. In the 80's and 90's more off off Broadway houses produced works like this.In today's productions we are not getting enough plays like this; even La Mama and the Public have shied away from these types of works and it is unfortunate.
