Sucker For You - Joseph Quinn (One-Shot)
Since you all loved my last Joseph Quinn one shot so much I chose to brave another one for your eyes! Hope you enjoy it, friends!
Tumblr media
He was stunned. The girl he had been dreaming about stood right in front of him. Perhaps, not dressed as beautifully as in his dreams but he could not get those pretty E/C colored eyes out of his head. He didn't get dreams very often that he remembered enough but this one was so persistent. For a good week, he seemed to have the same occurring dream. Perhaps not scene by scene but in every single one of those dreams, she was in it. With skin a smooth S/C and eyes a perfect shape and color as they kept solid eye contact as her companion spoke to her. Her dress was a modest maxi dress in the deepest shade of navy paired with a light-colored cream thick belt around her middle and matching sandal wedges on her feet which completed her look perfectly. Her hair was perfectly styled and glossy looking in a beautiful shade of H/C as it seemed to shine under the lights above and don't get him started on that beautiful smile occupied by a musical laugh. He was smitten and if he wasn't an actor with a good poker face in character no one would have known the wiser that Joseph Quinn was crushing hard on his interviewer.
She finished speaking with her colleague before that form graced the floor in his direction with that warm smile on her face as she extended a hand that sported a pretty charm bracelet on her wrist. "Hi, thank you so much for coming on short notice! Adam isn't very good at calling ahead, I generally like to call agents myself." her voice was soft and friendly as she beamed up at him; even with the 3 inch heel giving her an extra height she was still shorter than Joseph's 5 foot 10 inches in comparison.
But he didn't care at all as he looked down at her with a smile that could light the whole world and gentle puppy brown eyes as they looked down at her. He grasped her outstretched hand with both of his and shook it gently before raising her hand to his lips to press a warm kiss to the back of it.
"Oh don't think anything of it, love! I'm very happy to be able to do another interview!" he replied happily as he let go of her smaller palm so that he did not look like a creeper by holding it longer than needed.
The soft tone of pink on her cheeks was evident as she tucked a strand of hair behind her ear as her smile grew a little shyer. "Well, we are happy to have you Mr. Quinn! This is actually one of my first chances to interview solo so I'm a little nervous. So if I fumble during filming please just go with it." her laughter was shy and a tad bit embarrassed as she waved a hand around.
"Oh I'm sure you'll do amazing! And please call me Joseph!" the actor replied running a hand shyly through his chocolate curls.
The smile the woman sent him would have melted his very bones and made his knees go jelly but he was an actor so keep up that face was what he needed. When they finally got into position in front of a plague wall with the Stranger Things cover on the back and the man of the hour was comfortably sitting in his chair with a water bottle placed on the floor just out of sight. The woman took her own seat a respectable distance across from the man. She seemed a lot more nervous than Joseph and he couldn't help but give her an encouraging doublt thumbs up right before the camera began to roll forcing the female interviewer to mask the flush that spread across her body at his gesture.
"Hello everyone, thank you so much for tuning in today; welcome back to the show!" a bright welcoming smile graced her features as the camera panned to her face. "Today we have a very special guest with us today. Mr. Joseph Quinn himself from the hottest hit Stranger Things; Joseph thank you so much for taking the time to chat with us, we are so excited to have you!" her gaze turned to the actor as the back cameras clicked on showing the frontal view of the man himself who waved to the camera with charm
"Oh of course! I'm delighted to be here. Thank you so much for the opportunity!" he beamed
"Well if anything we should be thanking you for the time you're making to do this interview for us. Stranger Things Season 4 has pretty much blown all the others out of the water; it certainly blew Netflix up!" Y/N laughed before continuing as the actor nodded with a smile.
"Now you play a new character that's been introduced in Season 4; Eddie Munson. Can you tell me a little about what you had to do to get in the idea of playing such a character?" she asked tilting her head as her gaze lifted briefly from her notes in her hand to give the man her undivided attention.
"Yeah of course, you know I actually had thought about how I could make Eddie's character a little different than all the others within the show. Everyone's sort of brought their characters to life one way or another so when I was reading the script at the beginning I was coming up with ideas on how to evolve Eddie in some sort of way. I was actually talking with the brothers during script reading at one point and Eddie's character was actually written to be someone more grungy and a little more hardcore. But little by little as we were shooting the scenes I sort of improvised a lot of the way Eddie's character was portrayed and the brothers seemed to like it a lot more than the original idea for his personality which I thought was a nice twist." he replied; hands waving a little bit as he spoke
"Well he certainly took the hearts of so many viewers out there so fantastic job! Do you actually know the size and strength Eddie's fandom had created in just one season? I think it's overrun by any other character on the show thus far and that's saying a lot. Are you surprised that he's gotten so much love?"
A small little smile tugged at the actors lips as his tongue peeked out a bit and his face flushed happily at the praise. "Actually yes, I had gotten a small glimpse of it all and I can honestly say it's very humbling considering that I was originally afraid that my portrayal of Eddie's character wasn't good enough in the beginning but it truly makes my heart so happy to hear that he's such a beloved character by the viewers. It makes it very bittersweet and heartbreaking considering the outcome of his character." Joseph replied nodding thoughtfully
Y/N smiled taking a moment to nod along with him and glance down at her notes a bit but before she could ask her next question Joseph actually intervened when he spoke up again
"I had actually noticed that charm on your bracelet earlier before we filmed; it looks like a Stranger Things icon. Are you a big fan?" a little smile played on his face that was equal parts curious and happy.
Lifting her wrist up to view it herself Y/N beamed a bit shyly. "Actually yes it is! You have a sharp eye! It's actually Eddie's guitar pick." she stated with an almost embarrassed laugh.
"Ah so you're an Eddie's girl too huh? I knew those questions were a little personal." the actor teased making the woman playfully hide her face as the camera panned over to her.
"Guilty as charged! But the blame is all on you for such an amazing portrayal of such a lovable character Joseph! We are seriously going to miss him on the show; unless of course you can give us a little insight on whether on not he'd coming back? You know there are theories that Eddie's not actually dead." she commented with eyes seemingly a little more keen than an interviewer usually should have. The tall tale of her own fangirl itching to burst forth but a slow smile gracing his features slowly dulled the excitement as he replied with a shrug
"I honestly can't say one way or another. I was very keen on wanting to come back for next season but it's kind of hard to think on how - if the brother's choose to - Eddie would be brought back after his death scene. Of course I'd love to come back if they want me too but it's really up to them at this point. I was surprised to see so much love given to his character so I'd be honored to play him again if given the chance." he replied with a twinkle in his eye that Y/N couldn't quiet make out the meaning behind.
When they were done with the interview the woman began unhooking herself from her microphone but looked up when Joseph came over to her with a warm grin on his face.
"Thank you again so much for the interview. I'm sorry if I fangirled too obviously." she teased handing over the microphone devices over to a staff worker
"Oh no of course not love! I wouldn't have minded if you did." his cheeky remark made her laugh as she reached down to grab her water and take a sip watching him
There was some sort of pause between them as if they didn't want to end their time together but unsure of what to say next. When the woman finally gave a little wave and grabbed her things to leave with an excuse of needing to go Joseph finally jumped at his chance before it slipped through his fingers.
"Actually, Y/N. I was wondering if you would like to go out for dinner, um tonight maybe? Unless your busy…" the adorable shyness of him made her grin over at him and squint
"I dunno if my boyfriend would like that…unless it's a business dinner of course but…" she trailed off and she could see his smile dropping a bit
"Boyfriend. Right." he hissing in a little breath. "Yeah um…" he was at a loss for words and Y/N couldn't help but laugh as she shook her head.
"I'm joking Joseph. I don't have a boyfriend." she grabbed her bag and pulled out her phone before holding it out to him expectingly "And I would love to go out for dinner with you."
The grin that he sent her made her world as he quickly typed in his number into her contacts. "That's great! For me that is." he laughed a bit he sent a text message to his number so that he had hers before handing the device back. "I'll pick you up at 6?"
She hummed thoughtfully. "Hmm, funny, sweet, and a gentleman. I think I hit the jackpot." she giggled placing her device back in her bag. "6 o'clock is perfect. I'll text you my address."
The actor gave her a warm farewell hug and the woman had to stop herself from inhaling his scent like a mad woman with her nose buried in his neck but damn did he smell good. When she pulled away she flashed him one more smile before turning to head out the door with him traling in tow. "I'll see you later than Mr. Quinn." she shot over her shoulder as they entered the hallway.
"Looking forward to it Ms. Y/L/N." was his cheeky reply before the pair began walking in opposite directions down the hallway with big smiles plastered on their faces and thoughts of just how well their night may go tonight.

Five Minutes with Joseph Quinn

Five Minutes with Joseph Quinn Eddie Munson Stranger Things Metalhammer Issue 365
Words: Rich Hobson
Stranger Things’ resident metalhead on playing Eddie Munson, guitar heroes and why Dave Grohl should write Corroded Coffin’s music
When you took the role of Eddie Munson, did you expect that it would take off like it has?
“Not at all. No, I think expectations get you in trouble in this game, and I couldn’t have predicted people’s warmth and acceptance for him. So it’s a really lovely feeling, it caught me completely off guard.”
What attracted you to the role in the first place?
“Well, the chances are so stacked against you - it’s very rare to be asked to participate in something that has this much kind of cultural significance so it was a no-brainer.”
How much of the character had been fleshed out when you were cast?
“I auditioned a couple of scenes that were actually in the show. We had no idea how many episodes he was going to be in; we were told at least four. But I didn’t know anything about what would happen at the end, or how much he would actually be involved in the season. So I’m delighed that I got as much to sink my teeth into.”
What were your influences for the character?
“I think we all those people that were a little bit older than us growing up, that we admired or had a soft spot for. I was always very impressed with those people that were a little bit older than me that were very nonconformist, a little attention seeking.”
How reflective is Eddie of you?
“Not much. We all have moments where we feel vulnerable, maybe overcompensate. I joined my school two years late, so I guess there was maybe a little bit of overcompensation there. But I’ve been very lucky, I’ve always had friends and haven’t felt like too much of an outsider. But with all of my characters, if you don’t humanise them, you don’t care about them, and if people aren’t vulnerable and themselves and authentic, you tend to not really want to be around them. I think we’re far more drawn to someone that’s offensively imperfect than someone that’s constantly trying to be perfect and impressive.”
We hear you “connected with the character through metal” - what were your entry points?
“I listened to Master of Reality by Black Sabbath over and over. Master of Puppets as well, Slayer . . . all that kind of stuff. That was my way into that whole world, really. Black Sabbath were my guys, and Led Zeppelin too, but I guess they’re less metal.”
Is it true you’re actually a guitarist too?
“Yeah, I’ve played since I was a kid, but it’s been woefully under practised in recent years.”
What was it that got you into guitar?
“Well, my dad played guitar and my granddad played for a time, so it’s something we’d do as a family. We are by no means virtuosos, but we all have a go.”
Who are your guitar heroes?
“Hendrix is an obvious one, I was always very enamoured with him. Nirvana were my first proper band obsession, I had all of Kurt Cobain’s posters on my wall. It’s kind of cliché, but it’s true.”
Did you get any input on the epic Master of Puppets solo in the new season? Was it your choice?
“I don’t know where the fuck the showrunners got it from! Ha ha ha! But it was completely their choice. It was the perfect song for a crescendo to take us through this crazy sequence I think it’s an inspired choice, really.”
Will we ever hear Eddie’s band, Corroded Coffin?
“We’re working on an EP . . . Joking! I’m joking!”
It’s not that ridiculous - Dave Grohl did it with Dream Widow this year . . .
“Maybe I should email him - ‘Would you writ the music for Corroded Coffin please?’”
How would they sound?
“Oh, thrash! Proper, old-school thrash - really fast, really evil.”
If you could play any rock star in a biopic, who would you choose?
“Keith Moon would be pretty cool, you could have a lot of fun with him. I don’t understand how that hasn’t been done already. I’ve actually heard that there’s something in the works, but I don’t think I’m in consideration for it. Whoever gets to go at that . . . That’ll be a lot of fun.”

Joseph Quinn’s upside-down year
He’s gone from hustling for bit parts to playing a beloved character in one of the biggest shows on TV, thirsted after by fans and fellow celebrities alike. Inside the surreal year of 2022’s buzziest British breakout

When Joseph Quinn took the call that would come to change his life for good, he was standing in his kitchen in South London. His agent was on the other end of the phone. “He called me, like, ‘Who’s that?’ And I was like, ‘What do you mean?’ So he goes, ‘I’m sorry, is that Eddie from Stranger Things?’” Quinn recalls. “I literally fell to my knees. Like, What? Are you sure? It felt like it’d just fallen out of the fucking sky.” It was November 2019. Only three weeks prior, in the very same flat, he’d recorded his first self-tape for the hit Netflix series with the help of his then-girlfriend and flatmate. “Obviously, at that point, I’m just fucking suspicious about the whole thing. This never happens. And here we are.”
Flash forward to today: after storming into the public consciousness as the sci-fi throwback’s latest anointed breakout, starring as punkish pariah Eddie Munson in Stranger Things series four, the 28-year-old has just flown out to LA for the third time in his what-the-fuck year. It’s a rhythm he’s still very much getting used to. Resultantly, we’re chatting over Zoom, myself in London’s Mile End, a short swim down the Thames from the unassuming world of his adolescence. “I love South London. I still live there – you get accused of heresy if you leave,” he jokes. “I might want to branch out somewhere different, because you don’t want to feel stagnant. But my life’s there: I went to school there, it’s where I met all of my friends.”

He scored his first job, on the 2015 TV drama Dickensian, in his third year at LAMDA (“I was a jammy fucker,” he says), the hallowed Hammersmith drama school where British acting royalty – Cumberbatch, Cox, Ejiofor – cut their teeth. It was while he was in his graduating class, in fact, that he met Fabien Frankel, then a first year, now enjoying his own rise apropos of the Game of Thrones spin-off House of the Dragon.
“It’s fucking hilarious,” Quinn says of Frankel’s new-found stardom. “We’ve shared similar anxieties about the ridiculousness of our situations.” The two are good friends; Frankel, for his part, brims with praise. “As much as it pains me to say, he was always just a brilliant actor,” he says of Quinn. “There was always some magic on stage. Sadly we’ve never got to work together, but we’ve always stayed close.”
Quinn’s early luck with Dickensian, as it turns out, was a touch premature; after that show ran its course, Quinn didn’t work for nearly a year. But an influx of parts eventually came his way: first a gig as a Stark soldier in an episode of Game of Thrones, then, suddenly, a job on stage opposite Olivia Colman at the National Theatre. “He is utterly joyful, naughty, and fun,” Colman says of Quinn. “He puts the work in. You know you’re in safe hands.”

A steady trickle of work followed: BBC’s Howards End mini series, opposite Matthew Macfadyen; as the tragic revolutionary Enjolras in the Beeb’s not-a-musical adaptation of Les Mis, reuniting with Colman; under Steve McQueen in the first part of his critically acclaimed anthology film series, Small Axe. “I’ve been so lucky that I’ve not had to graft, and wait tables, and do the traditional catering jobs in between to keep the lights on,” Quinn says. “I’ve been fortunate enough, and savvy enough with my money just about, when things are looking a bit bleak, to book another gig. And that keeps the wolves from the door.” It was around the time of the London Film Festival premiere of his first major indie film, the psychosexual slow-burner Make Up, that he sent in his Stranger Things audition tape.
A few days after the call came in, he met the sibling duo who puppeteer Stranger Things, the Duffer brothers, over Skype. “They were very nice, and very kind,” Quinn remembers. “I was very disarmed by the whole thing. Kind of like, ‘Are you sure?’ And they said, ‘Yeah, we really want you to do it.’” In total, 287 actors read for the part, according to the Duffers, who describe the process as one of the longest casting searches they’ve ever had. “At one point, we remember getting nervous,” they say. Munson was abrasive and unlikeable on the page; they needed him to be lovable, without wanting to be loved. That confluence of traits seemed an impossible bullseye, until Quinn’s reels arrived. “Joe was hilarious and charming, but with an unpredictable, wild edge about him,” they recall. It was a no-brainer. The call was a formality. “He’s a director’s dream because he takes what’s on the page and sprints with it.”

Quinn’s anecdotes from those early days are cut with the sincere self-deprecation you might expect of a guy still scrambling to catch up with his own ascent. This is the stuff that Faustian bargains are made of, after all: over a billion hours’ worth of Stranger Things series four was watched within the first month of release. That’s a lot of eyeballs. “I was talking to Dan Cohen, the [executive] producer of Stranger Things, about it,” he says. “He talked about the over-nightness of these experiences now, with these streaming platforms. One moment you’re fine, and then it drops. It’s on in millions and millions of houses. After that, it just kind of snowballs.”
The first table read came next. “It was a very weird experience. I was sat next to the lovely Jamie Campbell Bower, who’s had experience in these bigger shows before,” he remembers. “Obviously, because everything has to be documented on this show, they were filming the table read to keep the fans satiated. The setup was that the pre-existing cast were on a very long table, and we were behind them, being kept secret from the cameras. We were shouting, delivering the lines to the back of the cast’s heads, which felt very odd.” Both he and Campbell Bower, as Quinn recalls, were “shitting it”. Following that, he had weeks of fittings, kitting him out in the idiosyncratic metalhead threads that form Munson’s outcast armour. He had his first day of shooting, and then… whiplash. “[Stranger Things co-director] Shawn Levy came out at the end of the day and said we’re going into… a lockdown of some kind,” he says. “A hiatus of two weeks. Which would’ve been nice.” It would be another six months before Quinn returned to set.

What felt to him like a decade later, the show finally bowed to the masses. He watched the Stranger Things series four finale, wherein Munson goes out with self-sacrificial aplomb, with his little sister, dad, and his dad’s wife. Do they treat him differently now? “No, definitely within your immediate circle you hope nothing changes. It’s a very weird thing to comment on… [if] you take into consideration the actual fucking fresh hell that people are going through now, it feels like an arbitrary thing to feel threatened by,” he says. “Eighty per cent of it is amazing. Professionally, 100 per cent is amazing. 20 per cent of it is… fucking bizarre.”
Somewhere within that 20 per cent: the online drama between co-star Noah Schnapp and Doja Cat soon after the season aired, when the former publicly shared a DM from the rapper asking Schnapp to play Cupid between her and Quinn. “I’m kind of hesitant to talk about it really, because I didn’t do anything,” Quinn notes. “It’s not something that I put out into the world. But I do think she’s an incredible artist. It’s flattering.” This intrusive level of public scrutiny obviously comes part and parcel with sudden, incandescent fame. The tyranny of Instagram gossip and fans reading telescopic paparazzi photos like tea leaves are the unfortunate by-products of being at the top of the screen-acting game. Nevertheless, it must be difficult to adjust to. “People will weave narratives about you that aren’t true, I guess,” he says. “And I think accepting your powerlessness over that [is best]. If you’re going to correct people constantly, you’re going to end up exhausted.”
Tumblr media

But being famous, a term he loathes to use for himself, isn’t all bad. Take the sudden groundswell of cultish Munsonmania, perhaps no better demonstrated than at London Film and Comic Con this summer. “It was the first time I’d ever encountered the fandom,” he recalls. There were rumours that Quinn was “mistreated” by the staff during a meet and greet, blindsided by the sheer number of Munsonites, but he was quick to debunk them, a point he reiterates now. “It was very overwhelming. I don’t think the Con were prepared for the numbers. I certainly wasn’t.” In a viral video widely shared online at the time, a fan expressed their impassioned gratitude: for Quinn’s time at the Con, for bringing Munson to life. Quinn seemed emotionally overwhelmed, dabbing away tears with the inside of his elbow, barely conjuring a murmur. An outsider might conclude this to be the moment that the pin dropped. “I don’t want to sound too saccharine about it, but it is moving,” he says. “If you have a curiosity about people and storytelling, for a character you’ve created with the help of others… for that to resonate with people, it feels very profound, you know?”
And then there are the holy-shit moments. First up: in late July, he made his chat-show debut on Jimmy Fallon, though that came within a whisker of being cancelled. “I was sick before I went on,” he says. “I stupidly had oysters for lunch on the day, thinking that I needed some vigour and vitality and that’d get me through it.” Turns out his mind was playing tricks: that stir in the pit of his gut was the product of acute anxiety, per the show’s backstage nurse. But he still went on. He met Kevin Hart, “a consummate pro,” in the green room backstage. “The nerves just bounce off him, I think, whereas they were just leaving bullet holes in me,” Quinn says. A month before our interview, he was named one of Variety’s 10 Actors to Watch for 2022. Patton Oswalt introduced himself to Quinn at the swanky brunch coronation thereafter. “He just feels so many miles away from my life. For him to come up to me was very weird.”

Stratospheric parts like Eddie Munson are a “lottery ticket,” as Quinn puts it. And at the end of it all, he’s effectively coming away with a blank check. Is he going to put his energy into indie roles, like the drama he finished shooting over the summer, Hoard, or is he marching up to the Broccolis to demand Bond? “Yeah, I’ve just got off a Zoom with Barbara, actually…” he jokes. “I don’t know. It’s such a fucking cliché, but it’s about connection to the material. With Hoard, I’m specifically excited for the director, Luna Carmoon, and the lead, Saura Lightfoot Leon. That’s a lovely experience, completely different to these behemoth sets. But you want range.” A judicious answer. Really though: Bond? “I think I’d be fucking stupid to say no to that,” he says, laughing. “But, come on, it’s not even worth entertaining.”
Even that is on the presumption that Munson’s Stranger Things journey is over. “Yeah, I’ve said I don’t know because I really don’t know,” Quinn says. “Shawn Levy has said it publicly. I think [his return] would be very, very, very unlikely. He seems pretty fucking dead to me,” he says, punctuated by a sharp chortle. He takes a moment.
“It’s just a beautifully written arc. The beginning, middle and end are so powerful as it stands, so I think to just crowbar him into a narrative… you don’t want him to overstay his welcome,” he continues, ever the diplomat, seemingly wary of disappointing the legion of fans who made him. But a sense of certitude undergirds his prudence; the feeling that, after years of cohabitation, he’s ready to let Munson go.
“He did the job that the Duffers wanted him to do,” Quinn says. “By no means am I ruling it out. That’s a decision for the grown-ups to make. But Stranger Things was doing fine without Eddie. I think they’ll be fine next season without him, too.”
