Kabushima Shrine in Hachinohe I really fucking hate birds, so this shrine (home to hundreds of seagulls) was kinda a nightmare... But the go-shuin was gorgeous!

Location:Japan
Date:Taisho (1912-1926)
Description:A fine 'Ro” sheer summer silk "miyamairi" kimono, one utilized to drape over a one-month old baby boy during rite of passage at a Shinto Shrine. This kimono features the rare ocean scene many flying seagulls. The Shinto religion regards the white seagull as being more spiritual and therefore closer to 'kami' than many other parts of Nature. Noteworthy is the fact that the Shinto Kabushima Shrine of the Hachinohe district serves as a habitat for forty thousand seagulls. Hachinohe is located in the flatlands on the east coast of Aomori prefecture, on the northern edge of Japans main island, facing the Pacific Ocean. 32” x 37”.

Went to Kabushima Shrine in Hachinohe this weekend, entirely by chance. It was magical. There was bird shit everywhere.

cobalt blue spectral, burnt Siena!
cobalt blue spectral; what is the most beautiful place you have ever been to?
Unironically the French King Bridge in Gill, Massachusetts, although Fushimi Inari-taisha, Kabushima, and Assisi all come close.
burnt sienna; is there a painting that brings you peace when you look at it?
Constable's landscapes usually do. Sometimes certain shin-hanga prints too but not always.

#kabushima #shrine #monogokoro (蕪嶋神社)
