Cece Rios and the Desert of Souls is a rich adventure-fantasy story about a 12-year-old girl who sets out to save her kidnapped sister from a criatura, a powerful dark spirit. This is a very fun debut novel that interweaves mythology from Mayan, Aztec, Toltec, and other tribes native to Mexico and Mesoamerica. It's perfect for "Rick Riordan Presents" fans and adventure-fantasy lovers.
Upon finishing this book, I wondered if there would be a sequel or two since it feels like this could be a great series instead of just a standalone book. The author says, “Yes.”

Cece Rios and the Desert of Souls
I just finished reading a book called Cece Rios and the Desert of Souls by Kaela Rivera. It was a lot of fun to read and I can definitely see myself reading a sequel if there were to be one. The book follows Cece who finds herself with a soul like water, unlike the souls of fire that make up the citizens of her village. When her sister is taken by a criatura (desert spirit), Cece goes on an adventure involving forbidden magic, the power of friendship, and self acceptance to rescue her sister.
I had a lot of fun reading this book. Its at a 8-12 year old reading level, but I think it’s the kind of book you could read at all ages. It was published in 2021, making it a fairly recent book. I want more people to read this book because I really enjoyed it and I want other people to enjoy it too.

Happy Indie Bookstore Day! When you're shopping for yourself today, don't forget to pick up a copy of this great middle grade read out now! Thanks to @harperkids and @theshelfstuff for the gifted copy. QOTD: Drop a middle grade rec I need to read. I personally love reading middle grade books because they are magical, contain great characters and heal little parts of my heart. Today's stories are diverse, tackle hard topics in light hearted ways and allow me to get lost in adventure. FEATURED: Cece Rios and the Desert of Souls AUTHOR: Kaela Rivera 🏜SYNOPSIS🏜 Living in the remote town of Tierra del Sol is dangerous, especially in the criatura months, when powerful spirits roam the desert and threaten humankind. But Cecelia Rios has always believed there was more to the criaturas, much to her family’s disapproval. After all, only brujas—humans who capture and control criaturas—consort with the spirits, and brujeria is a terrible crime. When her older sister, Juana, is kidnapped by El Sombrerón, a powerful dark criatura, Cece is determined to bring Juana back. To get into Devil’s Alley, though, she’ll have to become a bruja herself—while hiding her quest from her parents, her town, and the other brujas. Thankfully, the legendary criatura Coyote has a soft spot for humans and agrees to help her on her journey. With him at her side, Cece sets out to reunite her family—and maybe even change what it means to be a bruja along the way. #ceceriosandthedesertofsouls #HarperKids #KaelaRivers #gifted #TheShelfStuff #middlegradebooks #weneeddiversebooks #ownvoices #bookfeature #bookstagram #books #bookphotos #booksandmurals #bookdragon #brujabooks #brujería #bookdragon #bookworm #bookish #booksforyouth #bibliophile #latinx #booksoutside #readlatinxbooks #Latinxbookstagram #bookstoread #booksbooksbooks #booksofIG #diversereads #booksforkids #middlegradefantasy (at Bushwick) https://www.instagram.com/p/COEOm7hr-Be/?igshid=19z9gsarxiky7
