Halloween Lunch Date
Hey everyone! I hope you enjoy the little fic I wrote for the @supercorpbb Halloween/Fall Event! I ended up using three of the prompts from the list: Pumpkin spice debate, Lena sees Kara wearing a plaid button-up with the sleeves rolled up for the first time and loses her damn mind, and Couple’s costumes. Although, if truth be told, none of the themes are that front and center. This was really just an excuse to write some Supercorp fluff since the last thing I wrote was pretty angsty! Hope everyone enjoys it!
Read it on AO3!
A sudden, deep yawn escaped Lena, knocking her out of the deep state of concentration that she had been in for the last three hours. The CEO of L-Corp’s hand shot up to her mouth in an attempt to stifle a second wave of yawns. Once they were under control, she leaned back in her office chair and rubbed her eyes. She had been staring at her laptop all morning, tearing through report after report in a desperate attempt to get ahead of her seemingly neverending workload, and she was feeling it in every inch of her body.
Lena’s stomach let out a rumble, its angry attempt at reminding the woman that it disagreed with Lena’s decision to skip lunch. It was the third skipped lunch in a row, and her stomach seemed to be on the verge of a mutiny, calming only slightly as she took a gulp of water from a glass she had been nursing for the past hour.
Seemingly as if she had heard the cries from Lena’s stomach, Supergirl touched down gently on the balcony of Lena’s office. The Luthor heard her before she saw her, the unmistakable crunch of the hero’s boots tapping against her balcony’s concrete. There was a time, early in their relationship, when the uncontrollable expression of glee that instantly covered her face was something Lena fought with, embarrassed by her inability to contain herself.
Those days ended months ago, and the Luthor excitedly spun around in her chair, her own bright smile matching the blinding one her girlfriend was shooting her way as Supergirl stepped into the office. “Kara!” Lena drawled out, letting each letter slowly fall from her mouth breathlessly. With one smooth motion, Lena pushed herself up from her chair and cleared the short distance between the two.
Supergirl, one hand carrying a white paper bag, and the other hand balancing a cup carrier holding two drinks, spread her arms out, allowing Lena’s arms to easily wrap around the Girl of Steel’s waist. Before Kara could respond, she found that her lips were already busy with Lena’s, who had wasted no time pulling the Kryptonian into a kiss.
Within seconds, Lena could the aches of her day draining away, replaced with the warmth and softness of the blonde woman that was enthusiastically returning her kiss. They pulled apart after a few more seconds with a gasp, each pulling back just enough to stare into each other’s eyes.
“Love of my life,” Kara murmured with a giant grin on her face. It had become her favorite way to greet the Luthor of the past few weeks, after reading what had apparently been a particularly convincing fortune cookie fortune. Lena giggled, slapping Kara lightly across her chest. The phrase had grown on the raven-haired woman, and secretly, she desperately hoped it was accurate, but she still felt the need to at least pretend to resist the lofty implications of the saying.
“To what do I owe the pleasure?” Lena hummed, her hands resting on Supergirl’s chest.
“Well,” Kara chirped, “I finally turned in that article that Andrea’s been badgering me about, meaning that I get the afternoon off!” The blonde held up the contents in her hands. “And I thought it’d be fun to bring my girlfriend lunch.” The Kryptonian’s smile twisted into some sort of smug smirk as her brows furrowed. “Especially since it’s almost three and I somehow doubt you’ve eaten since I saw you this morning.”
Lena took a step back and scoffed, clutching her chest with mock outrage.
“Don’t even try,” Kara responded, rolling her eyes. “You’ve come home famished every night this week! You ate three slices of pizza last night!”
“You ate an entire pizza yourself,” Lena shot back.
“Okay, yeah, but I always eat an entire pizza, you usually can’t even finish two slices. Besides,” Kara leaned in, grinning as she jostled the bag in her hand, “I got you that smoke salmon bagel that you love.”
“On a whole wheat bagel?” Lena asked, the hopefulness in her voice obvious. Kara just beamed and nodded. An ear to ear smile grew on Lena’s face as she cupped Kara by the cheeks. “You really are my favorite person,” Lena mused, pulling Kara into another kiss.
The end of the kiss was sudden. Lena tugged herself free and snatched the bag before Kara even knew what was happening. The raven-haired woman stood there, clutching the bag greedily, a sheepish smile on her face. “Okay, maybe I am hungry.” As if to drive the point home, a needy gurgle erupted from Lena’s stomach, causing the Luthor to blush.
Kara couldn’t contain her laughter. She pulled one of the paper cups out of the carrier and handed it to the woman in front of her. “And one soy lavender tea latte to go with it,” Kara smiled. “Think you can take a break long enough to eat with your girlfriend?”
The Luthor stepped around Supergirl, planting a kiss on her shoulder as she passed. “Go change first,” she purred into the Kryptonian’s ear. Lena’s hair kicked up from the blowback of Kara zooming away to the private washroom attached to the office.
It was a quick scamper over to the white couch on the other side of the office for Lena, who set the bag down on the coffee table as soon as she reached it. By that time, Kara was already emerging from the washroom, her hair pulled back into a ponytail, and loosely tucked into her black denim jeans was a hunter-green and black flannel button-down shirt with the sleeves rolled up halfway up her forearms. The top few buttons of the shirt remained unbuttoned, open just enough to expose her collarbones and get a peek at the rim of the tank top she was wearing underneath. The raven-haired woman rose the cup to her lips, positioning the opening in the lid in front of her, and let it hover there, obscuring the hungry grin on her face.
Lena really enjoyed the fall.
Eyes still fixed on watching her girlfriend saunter towards her, Lena absently took a sip from her drink. It was an instant regret. She grimaced, her entire face scrunching up and she swallowed.
At the sight of her girlfriend struggling, Kara quickened her pace, closing the remaining distance in an instance.
“Darling,” Lena coughed, “are you sure they gave you the right order?”
Kara took the drink from Lena, gave it a sniff, then sipped it herself. A happy hum escaped her. “Ah, I see,” she mumbled and handed the other cup that she had been carrying. “Here, try this one.”
What started as an experimental sip turned into a good chug. “Much better,” Lena said, taking a seat on the couch.
“Sorry, handed you mine by mistake,” Kara admitted as she plopped down next to Lena, their knees knocking against each other playfully. She set her cup down and began unpacking their lunch: smoked salmon on a whole wheat bagel with a dill spread, tomatoes, capers, and red onions for Lena, and a bacon grilled cheese sandwich, triple the bacon, for Kara.
“What was that?” Lena asked, a single eyebrow raised over her confusion at how Kara could delight in whatever that concoction was supposed to be.
“Pumpkin spice latte,” Kara chirped just before chomping down on her sandwich.
The answer only made Lena’s confusion grow. “That’s what a pumpkin spice latte tastes like?” she asked incredulously.
The blonde’s eyes went wide as she turned to Lena. “You’ve never had a pumpkin spice latte?!” she spit out through a mouth full of cheese, bread, and bacon.
“The idea of pumpkin in my coffee never sounded appealing to me, but that doesn’t even taste anything like pumpkin!”
Kara just shrugged as she took another sip of her coffee. “They make it sweeter so the flavors mix well with the coffee.”
“Well, they failed at that,” Lena flatly stated.
“Sweetie, it’s one of the most popular drinks in the world,” Kara countered with a chuckle.
“We’ve failed as a society,” Lena responded instantly. Kara busted out laughing, flopping back into the couch and twisting so that her face was buried into Lena’s shoulder. “I need to dedicate more funding into nutritional health initiatives,” she added, causing a fresh round of laughter from her girlfriend.
Slowly, Kara pulled herself back up. “Lena, sweetie, don’t you think you’re being just a little overdramatic?”
Lena snapped her head up so that her chin was pointed high in the air. “I am a Luthor, after all, we are nothing if not dramatic,” she retorted, barely able to contain a snicker. Kara couldn’t help but laugh at her girlfriend’s silliness for a moment before she really took in the sight of Lena in front of her. In her dramatic “proper” pose, Lena’s neck was on full display, and Kara didn’t spend much time resisting before pouncing.
They crashed into the back of the couch, Lena giggling uncontrollably as her girlfriend was straddling her lap, suckling on her pale skin. “Vampire! Vampire!” the Luthor cried out, unable to contain her enjoyment.
After a moment Kara came up for air. “Oooh, we could be vampires for Halloween,” Kara suggested as she sat comfortably on Lena. The Luthor shook her head.
“Too basic,” Lena replied. “It’s our first couples’ costume, it needs to be a little more inspired.” Kara sat up and rubbed her chin, clearly deep in thought. Lena pushed herself up and planted another kiss onto Kara. “Don’t worry, we’ll think of something,” she murmured against Kara’s lips. Her arms snaked around Kara, her hand gripping at her back. “But right now, I think I’d rather focus on enjoying my lunch break with my girlfriend.”
Kara leaned forward and hummed. “Yeah, I think we can do that,” she breathed before pushing Lena back down.
---
Nia was scurrying to her door as fast as she could, taking care not to catch her fairy wings on anything. Only half the guests had arrived and already her Halloween party was loud and raucous. It had made the knocking hard to hear, hence her scurrying. As she reached the door she made a mental note to post a sticky note on the outside telling people to just enter.
Taking just a second to catch her breath and compose herself, Nia swung the door open, a big smile ready to greet whoever it was. As soon as she laid eyes on Kara and Lena she let out a hearty laugh.
Kara held up her little, plastic shield and beamed. “Cap and Iron Man, pretty great, right?” the Kryptonian boasted. Lena shifted next to her, a light blush on her face as she held her helmet in her hands.
“It’s perfect!” Nia bellowed, wrapping both into a hug. “Come on you two, it’s time for candy and booze!” she yelled, ushering them into her apartment.

HEY for the fall prompts idea! Lena and Kara Halloween dress up party! Maybe Kara dresses up as a puppy and Lena dresses up as a witch? Basically just some cute Halloween party, maybe Kara convinces Lena to do a cute "friends" costume (which is actually a couples costume)...I don't know just cute fall Halloween fun!
The party is a yearly tradition. Kara’s idea. The inviting Lena this time? Definitely Alex’s idea.
“You need someone to do a costume with and she’s your friend,” Alex argues, but there’s something about the way Alex says friend that Kara’s hearing picks up on and she tilts her head a bit.
“I don’t think Lena’s the kind of person to wear a costume,” Kara says slowly, thinking of her perpetually put-together best friend and trying to imagine her in a goofy Halloween costume.
Alex quirks a brow, a smile playing on her lips. “I’m sure she’d do it for you.”
--
Lena seems mostly confused by the suggestion as a forkful of salad hovers over her plate and she just sort of stares at Kara.
“A costume party?” Lena asks after a few seconds of silence and Kara swallows the bite of pasta in her mouth.
“Yeah, it’s where you go to a party and you wear-”
“I know what it is,” Lena interrupts with a laugh, her foot kicks out slightly and collides with Kara’s shin in a playful manner that spreads heat over Kara’s stomach.
“Do you want to come?” Kara asks, affecting a casual expression but feeling her chest go a little light with nerves. She twirls her fork in her food and keeps her eyes there a moment. “With me? We do this costume contest thing every year and I need a partner.”
“A contest,” Lena repeats with an interested quirk of her eyebrow.
“Usually I go with Alex, but she’s going with Maggie this year and James and Winn are doing something together and I-”
“So I’m your last choice,” Lena interjects with an amused twist to her lips.
“No!” Kara exclaims hastily, dropping her fork and leaning forward on the table. “Of course not. I’m just - I didn’t mean it - you’re my best fr-”
“Kara,” Lena says with a laugh, stopping the stream of words. “I was joking. Of course I’ll go with you.”
“Really?” And Kara shouldn’t be so affected by the soft smile that spreads over Lena’s face, but she is. Just like always.
“Really,” Lena confirms. “But if we don’t win this contest then consider our friendship over.”
Kara’s eyes go a little wide at the threat, but Lena starts to laugh almost immediately and it spreads warmth across her chest in a way that’s becoming far too familiar.
--
They spend the next few days discussing costumes ideas.
At least Lena refers to the talks as discussions, but Kara feels like they become arguments more often than not.
Apparently Lena has a competitive spirit that could rival even Alex’s. Or so it seems based on the intensity she projects every time they discuss costume ideas. It’s only mildly terrifying considering the memories she has of what her sister has done to insure victories in the past.
At least six of Kara’s ideas get rejected. Some too complicated, some not complicated enough. “Simple, but not simple,” is apparently what Lena’s going for. “Accessible, but thoughtful.”
It makes less than zero sense to Kara, but she just nods along. It’s charming to watch the way Lena throws herself into the project as if it were equally as important as the stack of quarterly reports Lena has on the corner of her desk.
During a particular session in which Kara keeps coming up with ideas that make an expression of exasperation grow on Lena’s face, Lena throws her head back against Kara’s couch with an exaggerated sigh. “Why are all your costumes food related?” She asks and Kara doesn’t have an answer for that other than.
“I’m hungry.”
It makes Lena laugh. The kind of laugh that always tugs at Kara’s ribcage and makes her want to press in close. “God forbid I forget to feed you,” Lena says with a familiar affection that does nothing to quell Kara’s desire to press their bodies together.
Lena gets up from the couch with a conciliatory touch to Kara’s thigh and walks towards the kitchen.
Kara stays on the couch for a few moments and tries to get the humming across her skin to calm down.
--
They settle on Danny and Sandy from Grease only after they take a break from brainstorming and Kara finds the musical is playing on a cable channel. Apparently Lena is somehow as much a fan of the movie as Kara is which surprises Kara.
“Completely achievable,” Lena says when they bounce the idea round. “You’ll be Sandy, obviously-”
“Wait, why obviously?” Lena laughs, reaches across the couch to tug on a loose strand of Kara’s hair. “Oh, right.”
--
It doesn’t occur to Kara exactly what Lena would be wearing for a Danny Zuko costume which is the main reason why she nearly chokes on her own tongue when she stops by Lena’s apartment to pick her up.
Jeans.
Lena’s wearing jeans.
Kara’s never seen Lena wear jeans. She rarely sees Lena wear pants much less denim. Tight denim, cuffed at the ankle and clinging to her body like they’re painted on.
That crush she’s had, that inconvenient all consuming crush that seems to hum across her skin whenever she’s around Lena, comes roaring to the front of her brain.
“Kara?” Lena asks, lowering her head a bit to catch Kara’s eye. It startles Kara out of her stupor and she clears her throat, a blush spreading up her neck when she realizes she’s just been staring.
“Yeah, hi.”
“Hi,” Lena repeats with laughter in her voice. “You okay?”
“Totally,” Kara says and she scratches at her neck hoping her face isn’t too red.
Lena has a look of skepticism mixed with worry on her face as she looks Kara over and then down at herself. “Is it not right?”
“N-n-no, it’s perfect,” Kara stutters out, running her hand down her side to get the clammy feeling on her palm to go away. “You look great.”
It doesn’t seem to entirely convince Lena, a crinkle still evident between her brows, but she shrugs a shoulder and reaches towards a side table near her door to pick up her phone and keys. “You ready?”
Lena doesn’t wait for an answer, just brushes past Kara out into the hallway and Kara flushes when their bodies brush against each other.
“Ready,” she answers and the lie sits thickly in the back of throat. Her body feels like it might vibrate out of her own skin, but Lena is waiting expectantly for Kara to exit the apartment so she can lock the door and it’s a wonder Kara doesn’t trip forward when she moves.
--
The first person to greet them when they get to Alex’s apartment is Winn who puts his fists on his hips and exclaims, “It’s a-me! Mariooo!”
Both Lena and Kara stare at him blankly for a few moments before his smile fades completely and his shoulders drop. “Mario,” he says in a normal voice this time. “Like from the video game.”
Kara shares a confused look with Lena that only makes Winn throw up his hands in exasperation. He looks to say something else, but James steps up and sets his hands on Winn’s shoulders before shooting them a warm smile.
“Hey, guys, Happy Halloween,” he greets. He’s in an almost identical costume to Winn’s apart from Winn’s being red and James’s being green.
“Happy Halloween,” Kara parrots and she steps forward to kiss him on the cheek.
They continue their greetings into the apartment. Maggie and Alex are dressed in what Kara’s later told is Bonnie and Clyde. J’onn and M’gann are perched on the couch, but they’re not in costume at all.
When Kara asks them why, M’gann laughs and J’onn smiles. “This is a costume,” he tells her, gesturing at the both of them.
It makes Lena laugh from where she’s sitting down on one of the chairs nearby and Kara joins in the sound, walking over to perch on the arm of the chair.
--
The party is close to painful for Kara.
Everything is mostly fine apart from the fact that Lena keeps pressing up against Kara at the most inconvenient times or brushing by her a little closer than normal. When Winn finally convinces Lena to bob for apples - something Kara never thought in a million years she’d see Lena Luthor do - it just complicates everything for Kara. All it serves to do is remind her that Lena’s wearing jeans because she’s bending over the tub to inspect it and she’s...bending over is really all Kara can think about for a few seconds.
On top of that, Lena takes her leather jacket off before she leans over the tub and the black shirt she’s wearing underneath is trimmed to her body, shirtsleeves cuffed up on her biceps. Kara’s never seen Lena in jeans and a t-shirt before now and while Lena pretty much always looks good this is a new and confusing experience.
“Lena looks good,” Alex comments as she comes up to where Kara’s mixing a drink in the kitchen.
It startles her and she misses her cup suddenly, a splash of orange juice falling on the counter. “Jeez, Alex,” she hisses, ripping a paper towel off a nearby roll.
Her sister just laughs and takes an amused sip of her beer. “You’re jumpy.”
“You snuck up on me,” Kara complains as she finishes cleaning up her mess and goes back to finishing her drink. She spares a glance for where Lena is pulling up out of the tub of water triumphantly with an apple in her mouth and an adorable pump of her fist in victory.
“Sure,” Alex says. “I snuck up on the Girl of Steel.”
Kara rolls her eyes and stores the bottle of orange juice back in the fridge along with the bottle of cranberry juice she had been using. “Nice costume, by the way,” she says in an attempt to change the subject, but Alex isn’t dissuaded.
“You want to tell me why you and Lena chose a couples costume?”
Confusion tugs at Kara’s brow. “It’s a couples costume contest,” she answers with a brief chuckle. “What else were we supposed to do?”
“I get that,” Alex says dryly and she leans back against the kitchen counter to observe Kara with that critical expression she always gets during interrogations. “But you guys chose a couples couples costume.”
“You’re not making any sense,” Kara says and she takes a sip of her drink.
“Kara you came to the party with Lena in a couples costume,” Alex emphasizes, but it doesn’t really erase any of Kara’s confusion.
“You’re the one that told me to invite Lena as my partner.” It’s difficult not to glance over to where Lena is standing next to Winn and laughing as he sticks his head in the tub of water and apples. The expression on her face is nothing short of joyful and Kara idly wonders when the last time she’s seen Lena this relaxed around a group of people.
“Kara,” Alex says, snapping her fingers in front of Kara’s face. It pulls her gaze back to her sister who’s watching her with a bemused smile playing on her lips.
“What?” It comes out more defensive than she intends, but she avoids her sister’s knowing gaze and focus on stirring a finger in the top of her drink idly.
--
They win the contest much to Alex’s dismay who counts the votes with a look of growing rage. Her eyes go wide as she gets to the end of it and she levels an incredulous look at Maggie. “You voted for them too?”
Maggie shrugs and leans back against the couch with an amused, but largely unaffected smile for Alex. “I had my reasons.”
Alex looks about ready to throttle her own girlfriend so Kara jumps to Maggie’s rescue and sweeps up the little trophy on the coffee table near the hat full of their votes. “Looks like this is ours!”
Alex goes to swipe for it, but Kara artfully dodges and lands back next to Lena who has the most disarming smile on her face as she triumphantly takes the trophy out of her hands.
--
Lena insists on carrying the trophy home herself and they walk out onto the leaf littered sidewalk outside Alex’s apartment to head home.
The fall air wraps around them comfortably and it puts a flush into Lena’s cheeks that makes her look all the more attractive. Her eyes are bright with victory and there’s a skip in her step as they walk down the street.
“Happy?” Kara asks with an amused smile as Lena continues to hold the trophy out in front of her.
“Immensely,” Lena replies with a little scrunch of her nose and a grin.
“I’m glad,” Kara laughs and when Lena bumps into her side with a happy conspiratorial smile meant only for them it’s nearly impossible to resist the urge to kiss her.
So Kara doesn’t.
Their noses bump a bit and it’s a little awkward, but Kara pushes into Lena’s space and presses their lips together with short but solid pressure.
It freezes Lena in place and she inhales sharply against the kiss, but doesn’t pull away. Not until Kara does, blinking nervous eyes at her.
It’s just puffs of air between them for a short few seconds with Lena’s eyes darting all over her face. And Kara’s not sure what to say - feels the kiss said all she needed to. Hopefully. Because words are eluding her at the moment and Lena’s lips still look so kissable.
“It’s the jeans isn’t it?” Lena says after a second, a whispered tease of words that Kara’s lips quirk at.
“It’s you,” Kara says softly and that makes Lena’s face go all melty and there’s a clang of metal hitting concrete when Lena drops the trophy to the ground and pushes back into Kara’s mouth.
They stay connected for a warm few seconds, Kara’s hands clenching in the leather of Lena’s jacket and Lena’s fingers threading through Kara’s curled hair.
Later, when their kissing tapers off into just warm fleeting presses of lips, Kara takes another glance at Lena’s denim clad legs. “I like the jeans though,” she admits quietly and Lena laughs so brilliantly that Kara has to kiss her again.

Ahhh that prompt meme looks amazing. #6, Supercorp.
#6, Supercorp
Congratulations! One of your dreams has finally come true. Let me give you a big hug and wow, you’re warm…“
Lena Luthor is wearing overalls.
She’s looking at Kara with wide, bright eyes, gesticulating emphatically with both hands, and God, she’s wearing overalls.
Kara came here with all intentionsof being a professional, she even has her notebook open to a fresh page and twospare pens tucked into her back pocket. But Lena in overalls, all palestretches of bare skin and a black sports bra under baggy denim, has Karaderailed.
She’s got adrenaline fueled jitters, feeling like coffee with five shots of espresso, or Alex coming down from amonster-bashing high. She reminds her fingers to curl gentle around the barrelof her pen, the plastic flexing close to its breaking point, and eases thetension between her shoulder blades with a roll of her shoulders.
Lena leans closer, ducking intoKara’s eye line to gesture to a wire-strewn contraption on the table in frontof them, and Kara jolts free of her daze.
“You with me?” Lena asks. Shelaughs, a little bashful. “Am I boring you?
Kara shakes her head quickly, eyebrows raising high. “God, Lena not at all.” She chances a lopsided grin, watching Lena soften. “You were saying something about equivalences?”
Overalls.Overalls. Overalls.
Lena nods eagerly with a smile, turning away from Kara to lean over the low metal workbench.
“Right. I’m trying to find thethevenin and norton equivalences of the circuit in order to find a moreefficient voltage.”
Kara adjusts her stance slowly, careful not todisrupt any of the clunky, industrial tech that surrounds them.
The last thing she wants is toaccidentally crush decades of technological progress because she can’t handleLena Luthor in denim.
Lena’s workshop is messier than Karahad imagined, and she can hardly believe that Lena agreed to an interview thisclose to the inner sanctum. She inhales quickly and fumbles inside her jacketpocket, hands closing around the slim, metal recorder hastily. She sets it onthe table between them and winces.
“I meant to tape our interview forsome sound bites, if that’s okay?”
Lena nods. “Of course.” She pauses.“Though I’m not sure what more to say.”
Her words tick up into somethinglike a question, and Kara is so overcome with a jolt of throbbing affectionit’s a wonder she doesn’t swoon.
Kara smiles, shuffling a step closer, chancing a quick touch to Lena’s shoulder. “How about you just work as usual, pretend I’m not here.”
Lena arches one eyebrow, her eyesfixing somewhere low on Kara’s face. “That’s going to be difficult.”
Kara feels her face heat, the burnstarting at her ears, and fumbles for something else to say.
If she didn’t know any better shewould think Lena was flirting, but–
She thumbs over her shoulder, backing up a step, jumping when she hip checks a stool with a clatter. “I’mgonna take some pictures for the web.” She rights the stool, wincing. “I’ll besuper quiet, I promise.”
Lena laughs. “I hope you got somegood quotes already, because once I start working I swear I’m useless.” Shegestures back at the table, “especially when I’m focused on this mess, it’sbeen giving me grief for weeks.”
Kara glances down at her notepad—blankexcept for a sketch of Lena’s fingers wrapped delicately around a tangle ofwire—“Yeah, I’ve got some great ones.”
She pulls out her phone, fullyintending to take pictures of the sprawling, eclectic workspace, but findsherself pointing the camera at Lena instead.
She’s bent over the table again, elbows rooted fast to cool steel, frowning at a small, webbed circuit board.Hair is coming loose from a disheveled ponytail, brow drawn low in thought.Kara watches her brush wisps of hair out of her eyes with the inside of herwrist, her fingers stained with clinging, dark grease.
The grease is from an earlierproject, a machine stripped bare on a bench to their left, and its remnantsmark Lena in smudges of dark oil. Astreak across her cheek, black stains worked into the whorls and lines ofLena’s palms, her fingertips.
She faces Kara in profile, jawlinesure and strong, muscles clenching in her temple, tension popping low in herjaw. She still wears lipstick, but most of it is worn away, its color worriedfree by the catch of her teeth at her lower lip.
Kara snaps a picture, then another, feeling awestruck and achy and so, so young—
She feels a fool, coming to a placeof such obvious worship and making it an altar of her own.
Lena’s lips part as she joins two ofher complex plates of thin metal, and Kara watches white pearly teeth dig hardinto the plush of her lower lip.
Kara thinks if something doesn’tgive soon she is going to shatter. Sheraises her phone to take another picture before—
“Holy shit,” Lena says, standingupright, blinking hard. Then again, with more emphasis. “Holy shit.”
Kara drops her arm back to her side, confused. “What?”
Lena turns to face her, mouthbeginning to curl into a smile. She meets Kara’s eyes and it breaks into a fullon grin. “Kara, holy shit.”
Kara shakes her head, laughing.“Yeah, I got that.”
Lena stumbles a step forward.“Kara,” she says, voice breathy, high. “I did it.” A pause, Kara still notgrasping the magnitude. “I figured it out.” She laughs, hopping in place. “Idid it.”
Kara laughs, bewildered and caughtup in Lena’s contagious joy. “You did it.”
Lena makes a noise that is somethingakin to a squeal and it’s so uncharacteristic, so free and lovely, that Karacan’t help herself. She steps forward, reaching out her arms, and Lena runsinto them, hooking her arms around Kara’s neck.
Kara laughs, lifting her off theground, arms looped firmly around Lena’s waist, fingers mapping a string ofconstellations into the skin of Lena’s back. Lena buries her face in Kara’sneck, making a small noise of contentment that jolts straight to Kara’s belly.
She is so warm in Kara’s arms, pliant and soft, her lips crushed close against Kara’s throat.
Kara can smell her perfume.
Lena pulls back, arms still wrappedtight at Kara’s neck, and nods forward until their foreheads knock. Kara’sbreath sticks fast in her throat and she swallows hard. Lena exhales slowly andKara feels the warmth of it catch at her lips.
“I should probably put you downnow,” Kara says. Her voice is low, rough. She almost doesn’t recognize its echoin the empty cavern of the lab.
“Probably,” Lena says. Her eyesblink wide, this maddening landscape of grey. “But I kind of want to get you upon my workbench.”
Kara hears herself whine, her armstightening at Lena’s waist. She fumbles for something to say.
“Is this on or off the record?”
Lena laughs. Her eyes flutterclosed, but not before Kara notices there, amid the grey, a trace ofgreen. “You tell me.”
Lena kisses her and Kara forgets toanswer.

Levidromes
A levidrome is a word that when spelled backwards makes another word.
Well, at least not yet. It is not in the Oxford English Dictionary.
Levi Budd is a six-year-old boy from British Columbia in Canada who has coined the term 'levidrome' after spotting that the word 'STOP' spells 'POTS' backwards. After realising that there is no such word in English for this phenomena, a social media campaign has started to get this word in popular usage (hence this post).
I wrote a short Python script this morning that will pull all of the levidromes from a dictionary file. The full list is copied below.

It is interesting to note that some levidromes are also palindromes. I wonder whether we need a new word to describe this phenomenon also? Furthermore, there is no word in English for "a word that you make up in order to make another word make sense". I suggest: "emordivel" ?

Chapter 9/11
I don't wanna live forever
'Cause I know I'll be livin' in vain
And I don't wanna fit wherever
I just wanna keep callin' your name
Until you come back home
--Zayn & Taylor Swift – I Don’t Wanna Live Forever
Resolving to return to National City and recommit her time and, more importantly, her energies to saving the people in need was one thing. Actually doing it was another. Her immediate reaction to arriving back in the city was to slip into a depression unlike any she’d experienced since her initial arrival on Earth.
For six years she’d had time to think about everything that she’d thrown away that night in the bar. Everything that she’d let go of as if it had meant nothing to her. Someone who could understand her like no one else ever would—understand her aloneness and her uniqueness. Someone she could understand. It could have been a chance to heal old wounds between their planets and respective cultures – a chance to find unity after a thousand years of strife. Even if the people of their planets could never know, Kara could have found a victory in that and, in a way, been able to put Krypton finally to rest.
Physically, he was a match to her, or at least close enough. It took two hands to count the number of broken bones she’d given to boys she’d liked and with Mon-El…Mike…she would have never had to worry about that. Genetically, they were compatible as well. Daxamites had once been Kryptonian, which meant…she might have been a mother one day.
Lois had been able to have Clark’s children, but Eliza explained that what worked in one direction would most assuredly not work for her. Cervix of Steel – not to put too fine a point on it. Over a year after Mon-El had left, when Lois found herself pregnant with Jonathan, her mother’s discovery had been like a final kick in the teeth.
When it came to finding him, for the last six years she’d had options. Emails to send, a cousin to hound, internet searches to run, and newspapers to scour for information and clues. But now…those options were spent and there were no more roads to travel down. None but the only one open to her, and at the end of it she could see only loneliness and bitterness.
One thought kept circling around and around in her mind and all she wanted to do was escape it. ‘This is my life now.’
She went through the motions though. Going to work, investigating and writing her stories, saving cats from trees and runaway trains from collisions. She zipped in and out, oftentimes unseen and uncelebrated, whenever remotely possible. She became a blur, which seemed somehow appropriate. Then, when she could, she retreated to her loft and crawled into her bed, pulling the covers over her head. Never even bothering to turn the lights on.
After Alex had gone six hours without communication from Kara nearly a week ago, the eldest Danvers sister had gone on high alert. Upon the younger’s mysterious return, Kara had asked Alex for some space but had told her nothing, claiming she wasn’t ready to talk about it. Alex granted her request, but as her sister, would only honor it for so damn long.
She had noticed the lack of smiles, the slump of her shoulders and that her bright shining eyes had turned a dull shade of denim blue. Seeking answers on her own, she’d stumbled across something during a keyword search on the internet. On Saturday morning, when Kara hadn’t shown up at the DEO at her regular time for a briefing on possible Dominator movements, Alex decided to take matters into her own hands.
Quietly, Alex let herself into Kara’s apartment, finding the place uncharacteristically filthy. The fourth-floor loft apartment had always been a little cluttered, because her sister was a pit of packrat, but this was filthy. Empty take out containers that never quite made it to the (overflowing) garbage can, several days’ worth of dirty clothes strewn about as if they had simply been dropped, and left, where she’d removed them, and cups of half-consumed coffee as far as the eye could see.
“Kara?” she called out, already sensing that this journey would lead to only one place.
A person-sized lump in the middle of the bed revealed Kara’s position. Alex could see the lump contract further into a fetal position beneath blanket as though she were trying to disappear. Alex reached for the blanket and pulled it back. “Last time I checked, invisibility wasn’t one of your powers.”
“Go away,” Kara sighed, with no real fight in her voice, which Alex found more disturbing then the demand itself. Kara reached for the comforter and took it back, tearing it in the process. “Dammit,” came the muffled curse from beneath the goose down. Feathers flew up from the bed, slowly drifting back down on the mid-morning sunbeams streaking through the window panes.
“You know I’m not going to do that.” She grabbed at the blanket again and this time her sister let her pull it back. “Talk to me.”
“Alex,” she whined, just as she had when she was twelve and wanted to be left alone. Alex had never been the type to leave Kara to wallow for long.
Alex sighed. She was going to use what she knew against her sister. “You found him, didn’t you?” she asked. “You found him and went to see him.”
Kara looked at Alex, rolling her eyes back in surrender with a shuddering sigh. Despite the depression and melancholy, she’d managed not to cry since leaving Mon-El in the hospital cafeteria. Kara had held it all in and now the tiniest crack would be all it would take for her to shatter like a dam bursting. “How did you know?” she sniffed.
“Keyword search revealed unconfirmed reports of Supergirl being seen in Philadelphia. Valor operates out of Philadelphia. I put two and two together. It’s first grade math, Kara.”
And there it went. The dam. Tears flowing, face crumpling, skin reddening, snot producing sobs issued forth without the slightest sign of stopping anytime soon.
“Oh my God, Kara, what happened? What did he do to you?” Alex asked, horrified look on her face.
“H-he t-teaches second g-grade,” she sobbed.
There’s not a box of tissues to be found because Kryptonians don’t get the sniffles, so Alex rushed to the bathroom and tore some toilet paper off the roll. Thinking better of it before leaving the restroom, she turned back and manhandled the rest of the remaining roll from the dispenser. This seemed like an entire roll situation.
Alex handed her a wad of toilet paper and set the rest on the bedside table. Kara wiped away the tears she was desperately trying to gain control of, while Alex retreated to the kitchen for a bottle of water. “Blow!” she shouted over her shoulder. “Gently.”
She heard Kara’s honking nose from the kitchen as she twisted off the cap of the water bottle. Grabbing a trash bin from beside the bed, she held it up for Kara to drop her tissue into and handed her the water. “Drink,” she said.
“Bossy,” Kara pouted.
Alex’s eyebrows went up in silent condemnation, but Kara swallowed a gulp of water without further complaint. When it seemed that Kara had control over her emotions once more, Alex sat down on the edge of the bed and bent down to unlace her boots. Taking them off, she placed them neatly side by side next to the bed and twisted around. “Scooch over,” she instructed. When Kara complied, Alex climbed into the bed facing her and pulled the feather-bleeding covers over both them. “Now…start from the beginning.”
Kara told her sister about Bruce Wayne’s accusation and her emotional breakdown in front of him and how that led the billionaire to take pity on her and send her Mon-El…Mike’s…location. After that the entire story poured forth in fits and starts, Alex reaching back periodically for more tissues, the trash bin, and finally the bottle of water in turns, until the story was complete.
“Second grade, huh?” Alex marveled, unable to mask the amazement on her face.
“Right?” Kara agreed with a sniff. After some consideration she said, “It makes sense though.”
“How so?”
“He always loved having fun, and you should have seen him with those kids, Alex. He was…perfect. He wasn’t the man I thought I remembered. He was something more…something better. He found himself.” Kara sniffed again, another tear tracking down her cheek. “What does it mean, Alex?”
“What does what mean?”
“He went away and got better, and I…floundered.”
“You didn’t—“
“You don’t have to lie to make me feel better. We both know it’s true.”
“You had the burden of guilt, Kara. He didn’t. You’ve never been good with guilt and you know it. You didn’t flounder—“
“I floundered.”
“You didn’t flounder,” Alex continued from where she was interrupted. “You continued to do your job, you became a proficient reporter, a job at which you’ve been promoted twice, and you’re still out there kicking ass and taking names every day even when you don’t want to. You didn’t flounder, Kara…you just didn’t give yourself permission to flourish.”
“And he did,” she surmised.
“I suppose he had no choice. Good for him,” Alex said, meaning it. For six years Alex had been of two minds on the situation. She’d known Mon-El was head over heels for Kara, anyone with eyeballs could have seen it. But she’d also known that Kara had unintentionally rejected him in a way that would have given the strongest of hearts pause. She’d understood his need to flee, if for no other reason than to lick his wounds.
But he’d also gone out of his way to keep information from Kara about his whereabouts and that angered her on behalf of her hurting sister. Kara had explained that, according to Bruce, Mon-El wanted her to forget about him, put him in the past so that she could live the life she was meant to have, as if he’d never crash landed in her city. Alex supposed that kind of thinking might make sense to someone who didn’t realize just how much they’d mattered. He’d thought himself expendable, regrettable and forgettable, and none of that was ever the case. At least not to someone with a heart like Kara’s.
“I’ve spent so much time looking for him…I don’t know what to do now,” Kara’s denim blue gaze was nearly overwhelmed by the crinkling of her brow.
“You get up off the mat, is what you do. It’s what we always do. You start by taking a shower. Please, for love of all that’s holy, take a shower,” she joked. Alex was rewarded with a sniff and an upturn of one side of Kara’s mouth. “Then you clean this place up, because this pig sty is not like you. You’ll feel better once you and your place are both clean.”
“Then what?”
“Keep breathing, keep moving forward. Just keep…being you. I know it’s hard and I know you loved him and that love changed you. I think that’s how it’s supposed to be. But letting that love break you…doesn’t honor what you meant to each other. And no matter what he said or did, I don’t believe he’d want that for you…not for a single second. Give yourself permission to flourish, Kara. I don’t know what life has in store for you, honey, but I have to believe that someone with a heart as loving and as strong and as giving as yours will find happiness.”
“But I wasn’t,” she lamented. “Not with him. I wasn’t loving or giving with him. I was unloving and I…took from him when I should have given.”
“Stop rehashing the past, Kara. You have to let it go and find a way to forgive yourself.” Alex stroked her sister’s cheek wiping away a stray tear with her thumb. “You’re going to have a long life…longer than me—“
“I don’t want—“
“Much longer than me,” Alex continued. “I know you don’t like to talk about it, but there it is. You’re going to have a long life. He’s going to have a long life. You have no idea what that life will have in store for you. Hey, you might even get a do-over one day. All you can do, Kara, is to try and be worthy of it when it comes. To be better than you were before. Braver.”
Alex continued to stroke Kara’s cheek until her sister drifted off to sleep, exhausted from the tears and the emotional purge at her sister’s urging. Lulled by her sister’s soft breathing, Alex dozed off as well.
When Kara awoke, the sun was beginning its downward descent outside the window. Alex was gone but in her place was a note on the pillow. “Clean this mess up! Call me if you need me. I’ll check on you later. Love you!”
Kara climbed out of bed, unable to ignore the need to pee for one moment longer. Her face felt stiff from the residue of her salty tears and her lack of hygiene made her feel as though she needed to be peeled like a banana. A long, hot shower was in order, where she cleaned every nook and cranny until she felt like a new person. Or at least, she felt better when she was clean, just as Alex promised.
After drying her hair, she changed into a ratty hooded sweatshirt and a pair of clingy yoga pants. The perfect outfit for a spring cleaning of her loft.
She began by emptying the trash and then filling even more trash bags with empty fast food cartons, old coffee cups, both empty and still half full. And she didn’t stop there. She threw away junk mail she hadn’t time to sift through in weeks, as well as old drafts of stories that were redlined but never made it to Snapper’s desk because other stories took precedence. Pamphlets she’d picked up somewhere for research went into the garbage. She gathered the dirty clothes strewn throughout her apartment, separated the colors from the whites and put a load in the washing machine.
She cleaned out her refrigerator and her pantry cabinets, throwing out anything that was even remotely expired. Kara emptied all of her canned goods into a box for donating to the local soup kitchen. Starting fresh became the theme of the day and boxing her pantry food up made it easier to spray and wipe down her cabinets.
Kara rolled up her rug and tossed it on the couch, allowing her to sweep the floor and then, on her hands and knees, she worked her way across every inch of her floor with a buffer and wood polish. By the time she finished that task, she was able to change out her first load of laundry for her second, placing he first load into the dyer.
In her bedroom, she sat on the bed, stuffing down feathers back into her comforter and mending the tear in the cloth with tiny stitches until it was almost as good as new. She changed her sheets and pillowcases for fresh ones, making the bed with tight corners, even placing the throw pillows at the head of the bed were they belonged, but so rarely ended up.
The bathroom floor got the toothbrush treatment, as she cleaned every last grain of dirt from the grout of the 2-inch by 2-inch mint green tiles. Her shower was blasted with mildew cleanser whether it needed it or not, and she took her (old) toothbrush to those tiles too. She threw out old makeup, deciding that she could use a trip to her favorite cosmetics outlet for a whole new set.
When both loads of laundry were dry, she put the living room back to rights and sat on the sofa to fold it all, just catching the beginning of an old Jerry Lewis movie on the American Classic Comedies channel. They were showing a Martin/Lewis marathon this weekend and currently airing was one of her favorites. The comedian was goofy and acted on the outside how she sometimes felt on the inside, so as a child his antics had always lifted her spirits – a quality she was in dire need of right now. Clothes quickly folded and put away, she left the television on and continued cleaning, pulling lampshades off lamps to give them each a thorough dusting. Cleaning the loft’s windows came next and before she was done her stomach let her know that it was dinnertime. Unfortunately, she’d cleaned out her fridge and boxed up her canned goods, so cooking dinner was out of the question until she could do some grocery shopping.
In the kitchen, she opened her junk drawer to retrieve a series of takeout menus for cheap and speedy delivery. After all the work she’d done, she could eat a horse, but she decided pizza was the safer choice. About the time Kara picked up her cellphone to make the call to Luigi’s for her usual order, a light knock came on the door. Ditching the menu she didn’t need, she walked across the room to the door, speed dialing Luigi’s and placing the phone up to her ear. Alex must have returned to check on her, or kick her ass into gear.
“Just in time,” she said loud enough to be heard through the door. “I was just about to order dinner. Do you want any—“ She stopped short, dumbfounded, when she saw who stood on her doorstep. Kara’s breath caught in her chest, the butterflies in her stomach doing loop-de-loops like stunt planes at an air show.
“I hope you’re in the mood for pizza and pot stickers,” Mon-El said, his voice soft and maybe a little uncertain. He stood in her hallway, boxes held in front of him like a barrier between them. He was so handsome she had the blink away the emotion welling in her eyes and swallow the lump in her throat.
“You’re….” she attempted, her tongue suddenly devoid of all lubrication. “You’re here.” Her voice was hoarse and weak.
“I thought we could…have dinner.” She was an absolute mess, tendrils of hair slipping free from her ponytail to create a wispy, wild halo around her face. Her hoodie is streaked with dirt as though she’s repeatedly wiped filthy hands across it to clean them. The knees of her yoga pants are threadbare and she smells a little like laundry detergent and bleach. There’s a large smudge of dust or soot on her cheek, just below her right eye.
She’s never been more beautiful.
In a nervous gesture, Kara tugged the sleeves of her hoodie down until they almost covered the tips of her fingers. She picked at a loose thread on the cuff of one sleeve, picking and picking until the cuff began to fray at the edges. Just like in the cafeteria, she didn’t know what to do in the face of his presence; what to say…where to begin.
“May I…?” he gestured to her kitchen from outside the door.
“Oh! Of course!” she exclaimed, stepping aside to make room for him to pass. She clung to the door as he passed by her, as though it anchored her to reality. “Come in,” she whispered as an afterthought, closing the door behind him. Kara glanced about at her loft, thankful he hadn’t shown up even an hour earlier.
Thankful he’d shown up at all. His presence was a gift she could not have predicted, nor expected.
Placing the takeout boxes on the kitchen island, Mike turned back to her, absorbing the shell-shocked expression on her face. He felt his stomach sink inside. Maybe this was the wrong thing, his inner demon taunted. Maybe he should have left well enough alone. “Maybe I should have called first,” is what he said instead.
“It’s fine.” she breathed, still not quite believing that Mon-El was standing in her kitchen after fantasizing about it for so very long. She always dreamed that he would come home…to her. The last thing she wanted was to make him feel unwelcome. “You don’t need to call.”
“Good. Because I think we should talk.”

Karamel Fic: Ruination (4/6)
Title: Ruination
Author: gldngrl7
Started: January 5, 2017
Rating: Explicit
Chapters: 6
Author’s Notes:
I feel like I should point out that some stuff happened in this chapter that literally blind-sided me. Just came out of nowhere. That's how it works with me -- and sometimes that’s how I know it’s working. It’s the stuff that blind-sides that really drives the story forward.
BIG NOTE: I am borrowing canon from other Superman universes. When Supergirl provides direct canon I will always choose that (to the best of my memory) but when no canon is provided I WILL borrow from “Smallville” or “Man of Steel”. Be warned..
More religiony type stuff in this chapter, But it’s alien religion stuff,so if you get offended...you’re weird.
Chapter 4 is NOT explicit in rating. My apologies.
Thanks to the following for your comments and flailing. You guys are awesome: @pwettypwita, @lostin-the-desert
To all others: thanks for reading/liking
Constructive criticisms and feedback/comments/flailing are mightily appreciated. Flames are destroyed by my freeze breath.
Chapter: 4/6
Look what we started, baby
You're not what I expected
'Cause all I ever wanted was some fun
Look what we started, baby
Used to look for exits
'Cause all I ever wanted was some fun
I never meant to fall in love
--Jason Derulo – “Cheyenne”
A black light provided by the DEO reveals the trace remains of the Medusa virus’s presence wherever it fluoresces. Despite the speed of his work, it is challenging to find every bit of remaining contaminant. It’s everywhere, he knows, thanks to the virus being aerosolized into a weapon. It’s on every chair, every booth, on the ceiling, beneath the tables, and every glass and bottle of liquor will be have to be decontaminated.
“Why don’t we knock off for the rest of the day? We can pick up again tomorrow.” M’gann, the White Martian who’s chosen to live in human form, stands before Mon-El in a borrowed HazMat suit. Due to his immunity, he doesn’t require extra protection so he’s wearing a pair of blue scrubs borrowed from the hospital laundry, sneakers that are barely hanging on since walking through fire, and a pair of thick, black rubber gloves that extend nearly to his elbows.
“Walk me out?” she asks. Mon-El nods, tearing off his rubber gloves and dropping them on the bar. M’gann isn’t one for tight spaces and needs frequent breaks from the confinement of the suit, from which she requires assistance in donning and removal.
In the alleyway behind the bar, they stand in front of the open back doors of her van filled with bleach and other cleaning materials. By the time they’re finished, her bar is going to be the cleanest joint in all of National City. Mon-El sprays down her suit with a fine mist of decontaminant before reaching for plastic zipper that from just below the suit’s helmet, diagonally across her body. She’s tearing off the helmet before he’s finished with the zipper.
M’gann takes a deep breath and tilts her head back, eyes clothes, absorbing the sun’s rays like she’s a Kryptonian/Daxamite. She really hates being inside this monstrosity. She hates even more that she has to. She slithers out of the rest of the suit and throws it in the back of the van. The bar had been her home away from home until it was heartlessly violated by CADMUS in an attempt to murder every alien inside. She feels as if it was taken from them—from her—and she’s determined to take it back.
“Same time tomorrow?” Mon-El asks.
“You bet,” she replies. “For as long as I can stand the suit.”
Concerned for her apparent claustrophobic tendencies, he suggests, “You know I can just take care of it. There’s no need for you to get suited up all the time.”
“It’s my place now,” she shakes her head, “and I should be there. I need to see this through.” After the attack, the bar’s original owner couldn’t put the place on the market fast enough, so M’gann snapped it up for a steal, seeing the opportunity to truly make a home here.
“I understand,” he answers. Or at least, he’s beginning to. Working for something, earning it, seems to make people more attached to it – responsible for it. It’s a pattern he’s beginning to see more and more among the humans.
“I appreciate the offer though, Mon-El, I really do.” Then with a chuckle she asks, “You trying to get on someone’s good side?”
“Just yours,” he smiles, in a way that he hopes is not too charming, but rather inviting.
Her eyes widen, not expecting that answer. “Well, you’re on the right track. What is it that you want?”
“Something a little more permanent. I could really use a job.”
“Tired of living off a government stipend?”
“I guess you could say that.”
“Well, I need bartenders,” she says. “I’m having trouble filling my roster at the moment. Can’t imagine why…” she mutters.
A ray of hope lights in Mon-El’s eyes but it’s quickly extinguished. “I don’t…know how to do that.”
“You’ll learn,” she shrugs. “It’s not rocket science, and I’m sure that smile of yours will make up for the mistakes you make when you’re starting out. Although I recommend not smiling at the Tregorians – showing teeth is an insult. Anyway…I’m expecting the place to be slow for the first few weeks. That should give you some time to pick up most of the basics. Four hundred a week to start, plus tips – which you’ll split evenly with the wait staff on shift,” she informs him, her tone all-business. “If you’re still working out after six months, I’ll up it to six hundred.”
It sounds like a million units of currency to him. The ray of hope appears again. “I really owe you, M’gann. You won’t regret giving me this chance.”
“I’m the one that owes you. If it hadn’t been for you we might never have known who did this.”
“No. that’s--,” he shakes his head. “I just wish I could have done more.” He recalls the bar littered with bodies of dead customers. Peaceful aliens, like himself, who died at the hands of CADMUS. He might have been killed himself had he not chased after the perpetrator, narrowly missing the release of the aerosolized weapon; and had he not been a Daxamite, his Kryptonian-esque DNA softening the blow of the virus and giving Eliza Danvers a chance to find a way to combat it.
“Here,” M’gann says, reaching into her back pocket and withdrawing a wad of cash. “For your help today.”
Mon-El stares down at the folded wad and counts three hundred units of currency. “I think you might have given me too much,” he says, confused by the sudden influx of wealth. The currency in his hand is more than his monthly stipend.
“Look, Mon-El, there are two people who can safely handle this task, and the other one is busy being Supergirl. That makes you a hot commodity. Besides, it looks like you might need some new clothes and shoes.” She tilts her head, indicating his borrowed scrubs. ‘There’s a clothing resale shop down the street – that is if you don’t mind wearing clothes other people have worn before. But they’re cheap, and if you’re going to keep jumping into fires, you’ll want to get the most bang for your buck.”
“Right,” he says, having no idea what the phrase means. At least he’s beginning to recognize an idiom when he hears one, so that’s progress. Before he leaves, she gives him instructions on locating the shop and its name. It will be nice to have something other than scrubs to wear for his ‘date’ with Kara.
M’gann, having more knowledge of Earth, and National City in particular, is correct. For a whopping thirty-two units of currency he obtains two pairs of thick denim jeans, a few button up shirts (one with a hardly noticeable stain on the hem), a few t-shirts, a pair of brown work boots with steel toes, and a jacket with a hood. Changing into the jeans, he layers a blue and white plaid flannel shirt with a red t-shirt, and though he has no fresh socks, he laces up the boots anyway, tossing his burned sneakers into the nearby trash. His scrubs he throws into the bag before he leaves. He can’t deny their comfort and wishes to keep them should he have occasion to use them again.
Mon-El makes a few more stops along the way to meet Kara, spending his money like a miser, but picking up a few necessities, like socks and a cheap watch. He also wishes to purchase one of these communication devices that everyone carries around with them, but after stepping into the store and checking the prices, finds it too expensive for his current state of finances.
Outside of the ice cream shop, Mon-El doesn’t wait long before he spots Kara moving towards him, fast by human standards, but by no means using super speeds. She grins at him the moment her eyes alight on his, and his stomach plummets. The thought of losing that look in her eyes, terrifies him beyond the telling of it.
“I’m right here,” Ral interrupts Mon-El’s thoughts, his voice reassuring. “You can do this.”
“If you say so.”
“I do.”
“Hey!” Mon-El greets, his grin plastered to his face. She’s dressed as Kara Danvers, which makes sense, since Supergirl on an ice cream outing would likely bring too much attention. She wears a light green Oxford, with a dove gray pencil skirt and pointy-toed flats. She’s wearing her glasses, with her voluminous hair knotted on her head and secured with what looks like…pencils? Will wonders never cease? “You’re right on time,” he checks the hour with the new watch on his wrist.
“Hey, you,” she greets back with her usually cheery disposition. After a moment’s hesitation, a shift of weight from one foot to another and then back again, she throws caution to the wind and leans forward to greet him with a kiss. It’s chaste and quick, appropriate for a public sidewalk greeting, but still she aches for more. Pulling back, her hands on his shoulders, she notices his obvious change of clothes, as well as the bag he carries. “What have you got there?”
“M’gann gave me currency for the work I did today, and so I went shopping. She told me of a place that sells cheap clothes that have already been worn by others. Isn’t that an interesting idea? What does ‘bang for your buck’ mean?”
“It means to get a lot for a small amount of money,” she answers with a smile. “So you went to the Goodwill?”
“Yes, that was the name of it,” he confirms. “I was able to get several articles of clothing and these boots for only thirty-two units.”
“Dollars,” she corrects. “We call units ‘dollars’ here in America…or ‘bucks’—which is why we say ‘bang for your buck’. Though other countries have different names and values for their currency.”
“That makes more sense now,” he says, his eyes lighting up with understanding. “Dollars,” he repeats, committing its meaning to memory.
He’s adorable when he’s working hard to fit in. “Yes. It’s written right there on the bills,” she chuckles. Kara looks down, realizing that, at some point, her hand had slipped into his…or maybe it was the other way around.
“I also got this watch,” he holds up his wrist. “It was twenty-seven dollars. Is that a good price? It has not been used before by another person.”
“Depends on the watch. Some watches cost thousands of dollars,” she informs him with a smile.. “I don’t think you need one of those, though.”
Who would pay thousands of units—dollars—for a common device used for telling time?
“Watches are also a fashion statement,” she answers, as though reading his mind.
“Ah.” Mon-El leads her into the shop and they stand in line as they wait to be served. Ridiculous behavior for the sake of fashion or status is something he understands all too well.
Predictably, when it’s their turn at the counter, Mon-El has difficulty deciding on a flavor as there are thirty-one completely different flavors from which to choose. The teenage girl behind the counter patiently offers him several samples on tiny little spoons, and it’s the pistachio almond flavor that tickles his taste buds the most. Kara chooses mint chocolate chip on a wafer cone. They get two scoops each.
Kara attempts to stop him when he pulls out his wallet to pay, but he waves her off. “I want to,” he says, enjoying the first time he’s gotten to pay the way with her.
Also, he’s about to tell her something unpleasant; it doesn’t seem right that he should drop bad news on her and make her pay for the ice cream.
“How do you feel about taking a walk?” he asks. “To the park, maybe?”
Kara nods and Mon-El’s mind scrambles for a suitable conversation topic. The way she’s licking her ice cream, wide swipes of her determined tongue around the rounded scoop, does nothing to help his predicament. Mon-El clamps down on the groan that’s ready to force its way out.
She tells him about what happened after he left the ruined hospital. How she helped get the critically injured to the nearest emergency room, and how she stayed behind afterwards to talk to the many of the kids.
“Oh, they wanted to know all about you!” she exclaims.
‘They did?” Mon-El asks, surprise written across his features.
Kara nudges his shoulder with hers. “I told you they would never forget you.”
“Well…what did you…say?” He’s almost afraid to hear her answer.
“I told them that you were a secret superhero, which they didn’t believe because they said you had no costume, and I said it was because you didn’t even have a superhero name, which is when they started making suggestions.”
Amused by her description of the conversation, Mon-El inquires, “Really? Like what?”
“Well, there was the ‘Leaping Man’ – an obvious choice, if you ask me. Maybe a little too on the nose. One older kid suggested ‘Ascension’, which I give points for knowing an SAT word. There was one young girl there, in the hospital for a gymnastics injury who suggested, ‘Springboard’. Personally, I don’t think any of them sound like you.”
“What sounds like me then?” he wonders.
Kara thinks for a moment and responds, “Mon-El.”
“But that’s my actual name. And it won’t exactly evoke confidence among people.”
“It evokes confidence in me,” she counters. “What I’m trying to say is …being a hero is a choice you have to make for you, not for anyone else. You showed up today and you saved lives, but I don’t want you to think that’s what I expect from you. I was on this planet for twelve years before I became Supergirl. I chose to save my sister in that plane, exposing my abilities to the world, and as a consequence Supergirl was born. If Alex’s flight had gone on to Geneva and landed safely, there’s no telling what I’d be doing right now. It’s likely that I’d just be plain old Kara Danvers, Cat Grant’s assistant at CatCo.”
“There’s not a single thing that’s plain about you, Kara,” he compliments. Mon-El takes another bite from his Pistachio Almond, and rolls the cold treat around on his tongue, thinking about how his life might have been different if Kara had never become Supergirl. “If that had happened…we might never have met,” he realizes. “The DEO would probably have locked me in a cell and thrown away the key. The only reason J’onn gave me a chance was because of you. You’re the only one who’s ever had any faith in me.”
Faith he fears shattering, now more than ever. When he tells her the truth, if she believes for a moment that he’s lying for his own purposes, she will never look at him the same way again, never hold his hand again, never kiss him again. And she will most certainly never take him into her bed again.
“On Krypton we had a saying: Rao offers freedom with one hand and unbreakable will with the other.”
“What does it mean?”
“That Rao gives us a lot of breathing room to make our own mistakes and live out our own choices, but when He commands something, our own free will takes a backseat. He will have His way,” she tells him. “And by fighting it…the worst harm you bring is to yourself, because he will never stop trying to bring it about.”
“And you think Rao made you Supergirl.”
“Looking back, as I became an adult, there were signs that I didn’t follow; opportunities I intentionally overlooked. I simply put on my lead-lined glasses and turned a blind eye. Until He did something I couldn’t—wouldn’t—ignore. I try not to defy Rao when he makes himself known.”
“You are very religious,” he says, trying not to sound judgmental.
“Yes, Krypton is a monotheist culture while Daxam is a planet of polytheists,” she parrots the teaching of her database construct.
“Or anti-theists,” he counters. “Like myself.”
“So you don’t believe in anything?”
“Can you blame me really?” he shrugs, referring to the unfathomable tragedy that now defines his entire existence. “But even before…there was a god for everything. To believe in a god for everything is to ultimately believe in nothing. How can a person spread themselves so thin, like water spilling across a stone floor?”
Suddenly uncomfortable with the direction the conversation has taken, Mon-El is anxious to move onto another topic, even if means deferring to a topic he’d rather ignore altogether. Spotting a bench up ahead, he points her over to it, entreating her to sit, before taking a seat beside her. He tosses the remainder of his ice cream into the trash can beside the bench and wipes his hands on his jeans.
“That part was edible, you know,” she chuckles.
“The receptacle?”
“It’s called a cone, and it’s made to be eaten. See?” Kara demonstrates by biting into the wafer cone with a satisfying crunch. She covers her mouth as she chews but continues to speak. “It’s my favorite part, to be honest. Especially the last bite, when the cone is just a little bit soggy but still a little bit crunchy.”
“Well, the ice cream was delicious, so I’ll remember that for next time.” He watches her whittle her cone down to nothing, before popping the last bit into her mouth to polish it off. Mon-El swallows heavily, hoping the right words to say what he needs to say to her will come. “Kara,” he begins. “I invited you out here for more than just ice cream. I invited you out because there’s something I need to tell you, and I think it’s better if I don’t do it while we’re surrounded by cameras and microphones. It just wouldn’t be fair to you….”
“Fair to me?” The world slows down around her and the vibrating in her body that’s a constant presence around him now, comes to a full stop. Everything inside of her feels like it’s circling a drain and she’s slowly slipping away, scrabbling for purchase but finding none. “You regret last night, don’t you? Was I that awful? I didn’t know what to do because it was all new, and you probably want someone who knows all those things already.”
Mon-El can only watch, stupefied by her conclusions, as Kara builds up a head of steam. But then tears form in her bright blue eyes and her voice begins to hitch in the back of her throat in that way that makes him willing to do anything to turn her world right-side-up again. She stands from the bench and begins pacing in front of it before turning on him.
“But…you!” she accuses, wildly pointing her index finger. “What about all that stuff you said about doing what it takes to win my heart? You lied and I believed you! I’m such an idiot. It’s the oldest story in the book, isn’t it?”
“Kara, stop!” he shouts, grabbing at her arm. Her mouth snaps shut obediently, as she stares down at the hand on her skin. “Could you just…sit down for a minute?” Kara heeds his request, retaking her seat on the bench as far from him as possible. “I don’t know about this book and its stories that you’re talking about, but I didn’t tell you anything that was a lie last night.”
“But—“ He holds up a finger, silencing her.
“Every word I said to you last night was true. I do want to be the man you deserve, the kind of man that deserves you. And I’m willing to do what it takes to earn your love…and…your trust. Which is why I have to tell you this.”
“Tell me what?”
He reaches for her hand but before he can take it she snatches it away. A part of him shrivels up and dies on the inside. “Last night…” he swallows, “when we had sex, I discovered something that may be very hard for you to hear.”
“It’s about me?”
“First of all, you did nothing wrong last night,” he begins, disabusing her of the notion that she is a lackluster partner. “You were amazing and I can honestly say that being with you was the most fulfilling sexual experience of my life.”
“Oh,” she replies, blush spreading across her face, followed by a smile. She worries a paper napkin between her fingers.
“Kara, you are beautiful in every way and your body is spectacular. But it is also extremely strong – every part of you. I know you are very good at controlling your strength in ways I haven’t yet figured out myself. I mean…you could probably arm wrestle a drunk reveler and not break his arm.” Mon-El’s attempt at humor misses the mark, and so he quickly moves on. “The problem, Kara, is that there are certain things that you can’t control, because you’re not supposed to control them, and when they happen they are tremendously powerful.”
“Oh,” she says, this time a shadow passing over her eyes.
“Kara, you will never be able to have sexual relations with a human man,” he says, at last, feeling a part of himself deflate a bit inside. “When you take your pleasure—“
“I understand,” she cuts him off, her voice emotionless, like an automaton.
“I’m sorry…to have to be one to tell you that. I know it can’t be easy to hear.”
“How would you know?” she asks, a tinge of coldness in her voice. “I mean, how could possibly know how I feel?”
“Do you think I like this, Kara? Do you think I wanted this for you? How do you think it makes me feel knowing that if you choose me…it will be because you had no other options? Besides…do you really think I wouldn’t have the same problems? That I wouldn’t worry about breaking any human partner I chose?”
“Clark and Lois seem to be just fine,” she points out.
“Your cousin’s been here for thirty-seven years – since he was a baby. He’s had decades to adjust. I’ve been here for a few months and I can barely hold an ale glass without shattering it.”
“I’m thought you were getting better with that.”
“I have to think about it every single time,” he counters. He tilts his back, closes his eyes and sighs, defeated. “This conversation was not supposed to become about me. I just delivered some news that wouldn’t be easy for anyone to hear. So…I think it’s best if I…give you the time and the space you need to process it.”
Mon-El stands up and looks down at the top of her bowed head. He wants so badly to comfort her, to place his hand on the crown of her head and stroke her hair, until her sadness goes away. “I think…maybe right now…I’m just a reminder of things you’ll never have.”
He picks up his bag and with one last look back at her, turns and walks away.
****
Kara sits there on the park bench until after the sun sets beyond the horizon. Until the sound of police chase on the I-25 catches her ear and she’s off to nip that in the bud before innocent bystanders get hurt. She’s happy for the distraction. But standing there, in the middle of the freeway in her flowing cape and Kryptonian glyph, she’s reminded that this person she is – this hero with all of her unfathomable powers, may be all she is ever meant to be. And there’s something heartbreaking about that.
She takes to the air where it’s easy to be alone with her thoughts. Up there, in the stratosphere she can block out the sound of the city below and just…float.
In the weeks prior to the fall of Krypton, Kara’s parents and Kal-El’s parents had spent many hours huddled together speaking of their plans. Kara always knew that her newborn cousin, Kal-El, was special, having grown inside of Lara’s belly instead of the Argosian birthing matrix like all the other children of Argo City, going back thousands of years. Like herself.
Beyond changing Kal-El’s cloths in the first few days of his life, Kara recalls her Aunt Lara grasping her smaller hand, an excited smile on her face, and placing it over her ever expanding belly. She remembers vividly the way she giggled when the growing child inside of Lara pressed against Kara’s hand, as though trying to greet her before his own birth.
“Can you feel that, Kara?” she asked.
“Yes, Aunt Lara. He moves so much!” Kara loved him so. Even from the very beginning.
A sad, resigned expression passes over her aunt’s face. “He’s a strong one,” she said. ‘Stronger than any Kryptonian born in ten generations, for growing inside of me. He’ll make his own choices one day. Decide who he wants to be without some birthing matrix telling him.”
“Maybe I’ll get to make my own choices too when I’m grown up,” Kara grinned, blissfully unaware that so many of her already limited choices would be taken from her in the coming weeks.
“I hope so Kara. I hope so,” Aunt Lara said. “Can you promise me something, dear one?”
“Anything, Aunt Lara!”
“If something should happen to me…or to your Uncle Jor…will you promise to take care of Kal?” Aunt Lara rubbed her belly indicating her unborn son.
“Is that to be his name?” Kara asked. “Kal-El?”
“Yes,” Aunt Lara nodded with a wan smile. “It means…Bringer of Hope.”
“I like it.”
“Will you make me this promise, precious Kara?” Aunt Lara asked, her voice taking on a near desperate edge. “It would soothe my soul to know he will always have you.”
“Always, Aunt Lara,” she promised the woman, reaching out to caress the squirming bundle beneath her skin. “I will always be by Kal-El’s side.”
“Then I know that wherever he is, he will be in the best of hands.” The relief on Lara’s face was palpable, but Kara couldn’t think why.
Kal-El’s tiny foot kicks hard against her hand and Kara, filled with awe, presses back, letting him know she’s there and always will be. “Aunt Lara?” she inquired.
“Yes, dear one?” Lara’s hand caressed Kara’s long golden hair.
“Will a baby grow inside of me one day?” Kara asked, excited at the prospect of feeling it all from within.
“Would you like that, Kara?”
“I would!” She replied with the innocence of a child without the means to determine the responsibilities that come with parenthood.
Lara placed her hand over Kara’s on her stomach, and squeezed her fingers lovingly. “Then…if it is Rao’s will, that day may yet come…if you’re very lucky.”
“I will pray to Rao to make me lucky.”
A sadness crossed Lara’s face, and Kara wanted to inquire why her aunt was so melancholy about such a happy topic. “I will pray with you,” she said. “For the sake of all Kryptonians…may Rao see fit to bless you.”
Kara didn’t know what her aunt meant by invoking all Kryptonians, but she echoed back the expected answer anyway, “And may Rao see fit to bless you as well.”
She never forgot those moments with Lara which, as it turned out, were their last together before Kal was born. By the time he came into the world, a fat, hungry baby, blissfully unware of the destruction bearing down on his people, Kara knew something was frightfully wrong. Many times, she’d overhead her parents and Kal’s parents as they huddled together, speaking of escape pods and a planet with a yellow sun where Kal would grow to be strong.
At first she wondered why Kal couldn’t grow to be strong on Krypton, until more of the pieces were revealed to her and everything became terrifyingly clear. No one was going to be growing up on Krypton anymore, because soon there would be no Krypton. She remembers her father, Zor-El, a well-respected bioengineer, telling her that something was wrong with Krypton’s core and that it couldn’t be fixed. Not even by Uncle Jor-El, an astrophysicist, who was an expert in such matters, could find a solution.
Very soon Krypton would meet its doom, and everyone along with it. But they had a plan to evacuate as many people as possible using a variety of means.
It was a plan that never made it to fruition. The time they were hoping for and counting on, never materialized. Kara had hope upon landing on Earth (arriving late after having been thrown off course) that others had survived the cataclysm and found their way here. But her cousin Kal, who was now a full-grown man and very much beyond need of her help, explained that there were no others. He too had been hopeful, and was glad, he’d said, if he only had her. But over the years, that didn’t stop her from hoping.
If she had been thrown off course…didn’t that mean others could have been too?
It wasn’t until a year after her arrival on Earth, while lying in her twin bed next to Alex’s, unable to sleep and staring at the ceiling, that Lara’s words that day began to make sense.
For the sake of all Kryptonians…
Kal-El was the Bringer of Hope, but so too was she – although of a different sort. One day, when she was ready to be a mother, she would carry a child that would merge the world of Earth and Krypton together. A child that would, in time, take humans to the next level of evolution. And in that child, Kara could instill knowledge of the best of Krypton, so that the culture of her ancestors could live on after she was gone, at least in memory.
Even before she was grown—before there was a Supergirl—it was her biological and moral imperative. Krypton must live on beyond her own lifetime and beyond Clark’s. Not at the expense of another people, but with the help of it; together becoming better…stronger. Kara hovers high above the clouds, her secret spot, mulling over her memories and everything she thought her life was supposed to be, but turns out…wasn’t.
Perhaps Krypton is meant to die with her and Clark, she considers. But if that was so, why should they have survived in the first place? Kara finds it unfeasible to believe that their joint survival was anything other than ordained. It can’t have been an accident. Yet why bring her across a galaxy to this place and then make it impossible for her to perpetuate her bloodline, her culture, her history? Well…almost impossible. There was, after all, still one possibility.
One possibility.
One path.
Her breath catches in her lungs, her heart taking a giant leap forward before every ounce of tension seeps out of her body, as all the threads begin to gel into a cohesive tapestry that’s been right before her eyes all along. Why hadn’t she seen it?
Every muscle in her body tenses as she prepares to put on some speed. It is about time she stop brooding over the derailment of plans she made as a child, and start accepting the path before her – a path laid out for a grown woman. Kara shoots forward, almost instantly breaking the sound barrier with a loud boom, a ballistic missile with a pedicure headed for the DEO. She just has one stop she needs to make first. Kara smiled.
She has to see a man about some red tubes.
