A/n: no gender or body specification made in the story, so this could be read from any gender/personal preference. This is very self indulgent for me, I love Kayce Dutton and have since i started Yellowstone and I was deeply upset with the lack of fics for him so I had to take matters into my own hands while this godsend of an author writes my requests!!🥹 anyways, hope you enjoy!!

__________
You knew it was stupid.
You knew you couldn’t have him.
You can’t love someone into loving you back. You knew it. He knew it. He knew it would never happen between you; he wanted it to. He did love you, too much, though.
This summer had to be your favorite on the Dutton Ranch. Favorite in Montana. Your favorite in the world, same thing. As long as Kayce was there, it was the perfect anything.
You had loved him your whole life. Ever since you were kids anything he would do would mesmerize you. His hair caught in the breeze when you’d chase him around the arena for tag, his smile when you’d tell the same joke he was tired of but laughed because he knew it meant something to you.
Somewhere along the way, you had fallen inlove. You always had been, but this time you actually knew what it was. You knew why. It was Kayce. Any woman would be a fool to not love everything about him.
But…
He had fallen inlove too.
“Oh my god! That’s not-“ You looked at the boy next to you, absolutely falling more inlove the more you looked. Having by far the funniest conversation all summer.
“Oh, please! That’s seriously what I told him!” He laughed, his body leaning on yours, his head halfway into your lap.
“Kayce, your such an idiot.” You looked down at him, his eyes already trained on you. Your chuckle had died in your throat as you saw the look in his eyes. He’s never looked at you like this before—you didn’t see the other times he had. Those moments were just for him.
Your hand landed on his forehead, sliding it back over the expanse of his scalp, his long hair following the pattern your hand tread on his head.
“Oh, yeah?” He said. His signature small smile already creasing the corners of his lips. “I’m okay with that. You still love me, though.”
You looked up at the sky, the stars illuminating your features, entrancing the teenager below you. He was looking at you as if you had hung them yourself. “The sky is beautiful tonight, Kayce. Don’t you think?” Your eyes following and connecting the dots in the sky as his eyes never once dared to move away from you.
“I do. She’s absolutely gorgeous.” In a quick second, he started to sit up, his absence from your lap, drawing your eyes down to him.
Your eyes caught his, as he immediately pulled you into a kiss. His hand on your cheek, your hand tipping his hat off his head, carding your fingers through the growing locks of golden brown locks.
This was just the start.
You knew now was different than when you both were just 16. You had spent two years with eachother, loving eachother. You didn’t think anything would tear you apart.
Kayce had started disobeying Mr. Dutton when you two had just turned 18. Something about them always butting heads and having different life plans. Kayce didn’t want this life, he wanted you, but not at the price John had been setting.
It was either you and the Ranch, or he’d be gone and forbidden to see you. You knew it was a crock of shit, John just trying to scare his son. And you had believed it. You should’ve known the youngest Dutton. Especially now that the behavior was super out of character.
You walked the rocky path up to the main house, on the Dutton Ranch, collecting the smallest size pebbles you could find to throw at Kayce’s window.
You approached the front of the house, stopping before the porch steps and launched pebble after pebble. You had gone through the whole collection and then some. He would come to the window by now, you thought.
He wasn’t asleep, his light was on. Then you heard yelling and screaming, crashing and smashing. You had saw a small glimpse of Kayce and John, and you had heard Lee, you think.
Then you heard nothing. Just saw John’s face in the window, looking down at you as he shut the blinds. You had started on your walk back home, worried sick, right down the road from the ranch before you heard the front door swing open, John dragging Kayce by the collar of his shirt.
They ended up behind the barn, you watching from a healthy distance to not be seen by Mr. Dutton, before you saw a burning orange ‘Y’ iron. The sound of burning flesh and muffled cries and screaming followed.
You obviously didn’t see Kayce that night but you had saw him two days after, breaking a horse.
You stood up on the bottom wood log of the arena with your arms draped over the top one. “Where have you been, baby?” Your boyfriend just looked up at you. A heartbreaking attempt at a smile casted over his beautiful face.
“Talk to me, Kayc. Is everything okay?” You knew it wasn’t. You knew what you saw, not expecting that from John.
“I’m fine, darlin.’ Don’t worry your pretty little head too much, yeah?” He looked back to the horse, grabbing the reigns and walking him through the exit of the arena, signaling you to follow him to the barn.
You didn’t want to pry, you knew he wasn’t okay but you’d let him tell you about it when he was ready. You knew Kayce would.
“Okay, handsome. You doin’ anythin’ later.” You tucked a small strand of hair behind his ear, fixing his hat that’s shifted.
“Nah, you wanna come over? Watch a movie?” He asked. You smiled at him and nodded your head. You leaned in for a kiss and turned your heel.
“I’ll see you later, cowboy.” You looked over your shoulder, Kayce eyes trailing up your body, his eyes eventually meeting yours. “You like what you see, Kayce?” You laughed as you were almost out of line of sight.
“Hell yeah, I do, baby.” His smirk as he watched you, slowly dissipating. He was dreading the moment he had to tell you. He had to do it soon, tomorrow.
That was yesterday.
Your movie had gone great but you should have known then there was problem. He seemed on edge that night, and his room seemed a little less lively since the last time you had been in there.
You walked up to the main house, opening the front door. John wasn’t home so Kayce said you could walk through the house and to his room.
That’s when you saw it. His shit packed and loaded into duffle bags. He packed his whole life away in bags. “What’s goin’ on Kayce? Why are you packing?” Your eyes wandered around the room. His dresser now vacant of any picture you two had, of him and Lee. His favorite picture of him and Beth now gone.
“Everything’s okay, baby. I promise.”
“Then why’s your shit all gone? Where are you going?” You couldn’t help the dampness growing in the corner of your eyes. The small quiver in your lip.
“Hey, hey. Don’t cry. It’s gonna be okay.” He cupped your face, forcing you to look him in the eyes. His eyes meeting yours, both damp and a little bloodshot like yours. “I just gotta go for a while, okay?”
“And your just gonna leave me here? Take me with you.” You pleaded. You didn’t think today of all days would start with Kayce Dutton possibly breaking up with you, and leaving you alone in this godforsaken state of Montana.
“I can’t, baby. Not where i’m goin’. Not this time.” He kissed your forehead and shifted his hands from your face to your waist.
“Kayce, where the hell are you going that you can’t take me with you? We haven’t separated since we were kids, why now?” You wiped the tears that fell from your eyes as you couldn’t dare tear them away from Kayce.
“I’m goin’ into the Navy. I don’t know when i’ll be back. But you have to listen to me-“
“The fuckin’ Navy!? Kayce are you serious!?” You yelled at him. He never once mentioned the Navy or any interest. It must’ve been John’s idea. They have been fighting more and more recently.
You thought it had been just father and son disagreements. But the thought should’ve clicked when the iron branded his son, your bestfriend, boyfriend, forever.
He belonged to his father. He had to do whatever he asked. It had to be John. You were pissed. “Was it John?” You whispered.
“No, sweetheart. It was me. I can’t take this ranch anymore, I feel trapped. All I do is eat, ranchwork, eat, ranchwork, sleep, repeat. I can’t do it anymore, baby. The Navy would atleast set me up with some cash so I could find a place of my own.” He sniffled as he held you, you stepping away from him to pace around the room.
It was his decision…he was leaving you.
He wiped his eyes, and in all the years that you had known Kayce Dutton and held him when he was sad, because he had done it for you, you haven’t seen him this torn up and emotional about something since his mother’s passing.
“But does that mean you can’t handle me anymore? I mean if your tired of the ranch, you must be tired of me, right?” You let a choked sob escape your lips. Stopping in your tracks, your legs feeling too wobbly to move another inch.
He immediately rushed to you, embracing you into the tightest hugs he’s possibly ever given you. “No, no, baby. That’s not it. I love you, with everythin’ in me, you know that. But-“
“But what? If your breaking up with me Kayce, don’t you dare think about saying goodbye as if we’ll never speak again. They’re always the hardest and i’m not doing that with you. I do not want to say goodbye to you. Ever.”
“Baby, you know I have to.” His big eyes even frowned with his face. The sad expression crushing you even more than humanly possible.
“No, you don’t! Why can’t you just love me from over there. It shouldn’t be any different, baby.” You grabbed his face. His eyes closing for a fleeting moment. Your cries getting harder and harder to bear quietly.
“Darlin’, I can’t ask you to wait for me in hopes i’ll make it home to you. I can’t ask that of you, and you know I can’t.” He inhaled a shaken breath, evident that this was hurting him as much as it was hurting you.
“Yes you can. You know that. I’d wait a million years and more for you, Kayce Dutton. I waited 16 years, didn’t I?” You laughed quietly, that didn’t hide the audible sob that also parted your lips.
“Godammit, sweetheart. I love you, nothin’ can change that. I’d die for you, i’d do anything for you, i’d go to the very ends of the earth for you, but please for the love of god; please stop making it harder to leave you than it already is.” Tears freely streamed down his face, him not bothering to wipe them away.
He was giving himself to you. All of him, and you couldn’t have asked for more from this man. He has always done this for you. He’s never hidden who he was, especially from you.
As you held his face, you sighed. His hand holding your hips, you could feel his fingers shaking on you. He didn’t want to go. If he was ever gonna leave he was damn sure gonna take you with him. This wasn’t how he wanted it to be.
“Kayce Dutton, I love you. More than you’ll ever know and i’ll spend my whole life showing you. I’d do anything for you, all you have to do is say what. Ask me to wait for you, and i’d wait for you.” As soon the words “ask me to wait” rolled off your lips, Kayce had his answer.
“Wait for me.”
You crashed your lips onto his, the kiss fast paced and full of emotion. The devotion his body poured unto you was otherworldly. You two stumbled back a bit from the force of the kiss. Your tongue meeting his in frantic greeting as you held onto him for dear life, and he held onto you like you were his lifeline.
As you both understood what this meant, what you two were signing up for, you knew now that there was no chance either one of you would be ripped away from the other. No fucken chance.
“I’ll wait for you. When you get back, i’ll be waiting here, you know exactly where to find me, cowboy.” You kissed his lips once again, and smiled, your arm around his shoulder and one hand on his face. His arms wrapped comepletely around your waist.
“I can’t wait, baby.” He kissed you once more and that was it.
You’d be here when he got back. He was going to come back to you. Whether he had to kill or crawl his way back to you, he was going to come home.
And you’d be right there, with open arms waiting. Just like you promised.

It’s About Time
Tumblr media
Request from Wattpad mackleann Kayce or Lee ( you pick ) where the reader is a family friend who comes to help with the cattle branding. The pair confese their feelings and get teased by the bunkhouse gang
Driving my truck underneath the Yellowstone Dutton ranch sign I pulled the vehicle to a stop just beside the main house porch. I opened the door seeing that the area of the ranch was already set up for the branding the next morning. Getting out of the truck I shut the door seeing somebody riding up in the distance. “Well I didn’t expect to see you here this weekend.”
Whipping my head around a huge grin masked my face seeing Kayce coming up to me on his horse. “I don’t know why you’re so surprised.”
“Maybe because I thought you’d be busy. But I am awfully excited to see you.” He began dismounting his black horse comic over to me with wide open arms.
Rushing towards him I laughed, throwing my arms and legs around his waist. “You better be excited to see me, Dutton.”
“Hey I said that I was you crazy rascal.” He chuckled at me while I was hanging off his arms. Kayce was struggling to keep me from falling on the ground.
I had been a close friend of the family for years. I had been there for the family when Evelyn died and when Kayce had gone off to serve the Navy. I had somewhat of a relationship with each of the Dutton members, but Kayce and I were closer. He finally sits me down on my feet getting my boots dirty. “You better be nice to me. You know I can kick your ass.”
“Oh yeah. Which one of us has training?” He teased me, tipping his hat slightly to me.
Putting my hands on my hips. “It doesn't matter. I know how to throw a punch pretty good.”
Kayce stared down at me since he was slightly taller than me. Honestly most people would say we were always attached to the other hip. And it wasn’t a lie. I’d basically lived my entire life on this ranch.
Kayce went over to his horse leading him to the barn by the reins. “Does my dad know you’re coming here this weekend to help with the branding?”
“I’d expect so. Why did you have plans to skip?” I asked him to follow him to the barn.
He shook his head. “Nah. But your company will sure make it better.”
Together we left the barn and went straight for the main house. He held open the door for me, hanging his black hat on the wall while doing so. Walking through the living room there was a fire going and I could see someone sitting on the couch. “What made you stay out late? Daddy told Gater to wait.”
“Well it wasn’t because he wasn’t hungry. He just had someone keeping him occupied.” Leaning over the back of the couch hair in my face I whispered in his sister’s ear.
She sat her glass down, turning around to me. “Did you finally take her out there in the barn?”
“Beth!” I scolded her, feeling my face beginning to turn red.
Her younger brother cleared his throat. “We aren’t dating and you know that.”
“Rip and I may have beat around the bush when we were kids. But he knows he’s mine. Everybody on this ranch knows who is with who. You two ain’t any different.” She crossed her arms on the back of the couch.
Tapping my foot on the wooden floor I tried to remain calm about this. I didn’t need it to be painfully obvious that I had feelings for him. I didn’t want to ruin the relationship we have if he doesn’t feel the same way. But Beth had a different mind than everyone else. She knew what words could sink someone into the ground. “I’ll think you’re wrong. Now did you say Gator had dinner?”
“Walking away just means we will have this conversation later, Y/n.” She called as I walked into the dining room.
Pausing in my tracks I holler back to her. “No it doesn’t, Bethany!”
Kayce eyed his sister but had nothing to say to her. He dropped his hands down at his sides. The young Dutton knew he felt something for the girl who walked around his family home like she was always meant to be there. Maybe because he’d seen her around his whole life. She had always been a Dutton in his eyes.
“Kayce, I’m going to have dinner in the bunkhouse. See if I can beat those boys at poker if you want to come with me.” I called from the kitchen, grabbing my jacket and a to-go bag of food that Gator made for me.
He turned his head in my direction. “Yeah sure I’ll come.”
“Don’t have too much fun you two.” Beth chuckled at the two of us watching us leave going to the bunkhouse.
By the time we had got to the bunkhouse we could hear them yelling and half the alcohol was almost gone from the fridge. Sliding in on the empty seat next to Ryan he smiled in my direction throwing his desk of card’s down. “Look who decided to join the party. The future mr and Mrs. Kayce Dutton.”
“Oh not you guys too.” I rolled my eyes not expecting them to be on it with Beth.
Colby fixes the deck, dealing me and Kayce each a hand to play in their new game. “We can’t help it if you make it so obvious.”
“What’s obvious?” Jimmy asked from his bunk.
Teeter, who was fixing herself some dinner from Gator spoke up, removing the spoon from inside her mouth. “They clearly want each other just like I know my baby wants me.”
“I am not your baby.” Colby replied to her.
She smiled, turning back to her food. “Stop lying to yourself baby.”
“I didn’t think you had a thing for her, Kayce. I just thought you two were really close friends.” Jimmy entered the conversation.
I moved my gaze to the center of the wooden table not saying a word. Shifting the deck of cards in my hands I really wanted them to stop with the teasing. But Jimmy clearly couldn’t read the room correctly, bless his heart. “We are really close and that’s all.”
“But they are burning to be more.” Ryan made a kissing sound into my ear.
Kayce hit his fist on the table. “Will you stop talking about that!”
“Ohh he’s getting all embarrassed.” Jake, another ranch hand, joined in pointing his index finger at him.
Kayce hit the table again. “I swear the next person who teases us will see me fly over this table.”
Jake, Colby and Ryan about lost their shit at that statement all cheering like he had just admitted he had feelings for me when he really hadn’t. Raising my hands up I sighed finally saying something. “Can we just get back to the game?”
“She’s still avoiding the moment.” Jimmy spoke up.
Kayce raised himself up to his feet stomping over to Jimmy. He grabs him by his shirt getting in his face angrily. “That does it! What did I say a few seconds ago, Jimmy.”
“Woah, when did poker become violent?” Lloyd came out of the bathroom shortly after Walker did. Both confused at what was going on here.
Forcing myself up from my chair I stomped over to the fridge throwing it open. “Cause I apparently can’t get a beer around here with all these gossiping girls dressed as cowboys.” I mocked them for drinking almost half the bottle of beer I had taken from their stash.
“Well then let’s start this card game.” Walker sat down in my chair and thankfully there was no more conversation like that when Kayce let go of Jimmy. He left the bunkhouse leaving me with the boys and Teeter for the rest of the night which made me think maybe they had gotten underneath his skin over something.
The next morning was crazy for everyone even though we had everything set up. Coming out of one of the tents we had set up I halted in my tracks seeing the blonde that had hit a rock after an animal protest talking with him. Summer I remember her name to be. “I don’t think this place is right for you.”
“Oh don’t worry. Once I get out of here I will leave. Besides I can sense somebody doesn’t care much for me being in your company.” She turned her head slightly seeing that I was glaring at the pair.
Kayce turned his attention to her, quickly walking away from her side. “See you around, Summer…what’s got you so angry?”
“I’m not angry over anything.” I crossed my arms over my chest.
He tilted his head. “Really cause you won’t make eye contact when you’re angry. You also hug your arms to your chest when you’re angry. So what made you upset?”
“I think I should be asking you that more than you asking me after what happened last night. You bailed on me Kayce, why?” I questioned the young rancher trying to figure out why all day but nothing came to mind.
He blinked a few times with silent passing between us. “I didn’t like what they were saying about us.”
“It was just teasing right or do you have feelings for me?” I blurted it out letting my curiosity get the better of me when it came to what he thought.
Kayce stepped closer to me reaching up with his hands to cradle my face. “I didn’t like the teasing because I wanted to be the one to tell you myself. But now I say fuck it.”
“Kayce-“ He cut me off short, pressing his lips down onto mine and after that point everything suddenly stopped. Throwing my arms around his neck I brought him closer, deepening the kiss.
He moved one hand into my hair tugging on it a few times. I moaned into the kiss, finding this is better than I could have imagined. Like we were always supposed to be like this together. “I told you, boys.”
“Wait a second.” I broke the kiss recognizing Beth’s voice.
Kayce kept one hand on my wrist when I remained close to his chest seeing that Ryan and Colby were standing off to the side with her. “What the hell did you have them do?”
“We bet her ten bucks that the teasing last night wouldn’t work.” Ryan reached inside his jacket handing her some money.
She took it from his hand proudly walking past us to go find Rip. “They lost obviously. It’s about time you two finally saddled your horses together.” Kayce and I shared the same shocked look but shortly laughed with huge smiles on our faces at the well thought out plan she had achieved.

Chapter Eight
Tumblr media
Kayce was wrapped around you, pulling you back against his chest as you reached to turn your alarm clock off. "Mmm, no."
"Yes. We both have to go to work." You groaned as you rolled onto your side to face him.
When he stretched, his back cracked. "I love waking up next to you but your bed is too small. My bed's bigger."
"Your room is right next to your dad's."
"So?"
"You know what usually happens when we stay in the same bed."
"He won't care."
"I know but it's your dad."
"He knows I've been sleeping down here with you a few times a week and I'm pretty sure he knows we're not just sleeping most nights." He tickled your side and you squirmed.
"Stop." You giggled. His fingers stilled so you stopped wiggling. "I know that he knows we're not just sleeping but...I don't know...it would just be kind of weird having sex in the room next to his while he's in there."
"Yeah, I guess you're right." He pulled your naked body against his. "Plus, I like hearing you moan my name so I'd hate for you to have to be too quiet."
"Kayce." Heat crept across your cheeks.
The smirk you loved formed. "Not quite like that."
"No? Well, this might help a bit." You pushed him onto his back and straddled him.
His hands ran up your thighs while his eyes traveled up your body. "Fuck, you're perfect."
Blush stained your cheeks and you leaned down to kiss him. "So are you." You smiled against his lips as your hand went between you.
"Fuck, baby." He moaned when you sunk onto him.
You began to ride him, your eyes never leaving his. His hands gripped your hips before one slid up your stomach and palmed your breast. He pinched your nipple and you clenched around him. "Kayc." You ground against him.
He let out a ragged breath and his hand quickly left your hip so he could sit up. Your lips crashed together as he effortlessly lifted you so you could wrap your legs around him. He pushed back into you and the two of you began grinding against each other, hitting the right spot over and over again. His arm slid around you and up your back, holding you close, while his other hand dug into your hip.
"Mmm." You moaned. One of your arms wrapped around his shoulders, your other hand slid into his hair.
"Baby." He groaned and you knew he was close. You nodded breathlessly, right there with him. "Come for me, Letty." And, you did, moaning his name. He was seconds behind you, watching while you came undone in his arms.
You both collapsed, a thin layer of sweat covering your bodies. "Wow." You said between gasps.
"Yeah. You are without a doubt the most amazing woman in the world." He rolled you onto your back and propped himself up on his elbow to look down at you. His perfect smile donned his face. "Seriously, how can every time with you be even better than the last?"
"I guess we were just made for each other."
"You're god damn right we were." He leaned in and kissed you long and slow. When he pulled back you could see a hint of concern in his brown eyes.
"What?" Your hand came up and brushed his hair off his forehead.
"Are you still good with...everything?"
You knew he was referring to sex and everything that went along with it. "Yes, I'm good."
"I try to be gentle but sometimes I can't help it because you're well, you. I don't hold you too tight or push you around or-"
"Kayce," you smiled up at the kind, caring man you loved, "everything you do is perfect. He is the furthest thing from my mind when I'm with you. And, to be honest, I kinda like it when you take charge and manhandle me a bit."
"I don't hurt you or-or scare you?"
"No. I know you would stop if I told you to and I know you wouldn't hurt me. It's just me and you every time we're together. whether it's you grabbing me to give me a kiss while I'm not paying attention or when we're doing more than kissing." A smile finally pulled at his lips and you rose to kiss it. "I love you."
"I love you more."
You giggled softly. "Come on. We need to shower and get dressed before Tate gets up."
"Yes, ma'am." But, he didn't. He leaned back against the headboard and watched you stand up. "I am the luckiest man in the whole damn world."
Your hand reached for the sheet that was covering the lower half of his body and pulled it off the bed. "And, I am the luckiest woman in the world." You bit your lower lip before wrapping the sheet around your naked body. "Hurry up or I'll be done before you get in there." A sweet smile pulled at your lips before you opened the door and poked your head out, making sure the coast was clear before you dashed across the hall with the sheet draped around you.
*****
"Ready, baby?" Kayce asked as the two of you stood inside the fence, next to his horse and a chestnut mare.
"I'm ready." His eyes surveyed your face and you giggled. Your hands came up to rest on his chest. "Kayc, how many times have I gone riding with you? Lots. I don't even know how many times. And, every time you've shown me how to do it. You've taught me how to sit, how to stop, everything. I'm ready."
"Okay."
You rose to your toes and looked into his worried brown eyes. "You don't have to be nervous. I had the best teacher on the ranch. I'll be fine." Your lips pressed against his. "Let's go."
A smile finally formed on his rugged face. "Get your sexy ass up there then." He chuckled when your cheeks darkened. "God, you're adorable."
"Stop." You gave him a gentle shove before climbing up and settling onto the saddle. "Hurry up and get your sexy ass up there slowpoke."
"Jeez, woman. What am I gonna do with you?" He smirked at you while he untied your horse from the fence railing before working on his.
"You have until we get to the meadow to figure it out." You smirked back at him before you got your horse walking, quickly turning it into a run.
"Letty!" He yelled before jumping onto his horse and bolting after you. When he caught up to you, you slowed your mare to a walk. "What do you think you're doing?!" He brought his horse alongside yours and grabbed the reigns so you couldn't run off again.
"I told you I had the best teacher."
"You could have fallen off."
You looked over at him. "Kace, I'm not made of glass."
"I know but you've never gone by yourself before."
"I have actually." A mischievous smile formed. "When you've all gone out checking fences or moving cows, your dad's been showing me. We thought it would be fun to surprise you."
"You almost gave me a heart attack."
"Sorry." A giggle escaped and he gave you a playful scowl. "Do you think Storm will be okay to ride soon? It's not that I don't love this one," you pet the mare's neck that you were riding, "but-"
"But, she's not yours."
"Will she be strong enough to ride or, after everything she went through..."
His hand let go of the reigns and squeezed your thigh. "She's stronger because of what she went through." You knew he wasn't just talking about your horse. "Storm's doin' really good. She's a hundred times better than when she first got here, she's strong enough now. Next time you take her out walking in the corral, I'll bring a saddle and we can see how she does with it." You smiled at him and he smiled back. "Wait a second. You said you had the best teacher at the ranch. Did you mean me or Dad?"
"Your dad obviously."
A smirk tugged at the corners of his mouth. "Uh-huh. Well, since you're such a good rider, let me see what ya got."
"Race you the rest of the way?" Before he could answer, you and the mare were off.
*****
"Violet?" Tate's voice drifted outside to where you were sitting on the porch. "Violet?!" The door opened and he stuck his head out. "Vi- Oh, there you are."
"Hi." You smiled as he stepped outside, followed by his dad.
Kayce leaned down and kissed you. "Morning, baby. How did ya sleep?" He sat down in the empty chair next to yours before taking a drink from his coffee mug.
"Uh, Morning. I slept well. How about you?" You eyed the bruises on his face.
"It coulda been better."
Because last night he slept in his bed, not yours. The only time you, did see him yesterday was in the morning and he didn't have the bruises then so he had gotten into a fight with someone between then and now. He could see your wheels turning and he quickly took another drink.
"What are ya doin'?" Tate looked down at your lap, which was filled with photographs. "Did you take these?"
"Mhm." You answered shyly.
"Wow! You're really good."
Your cheeks started to return red from Tate's compliment. "Thanks, bud."
"Shit. Babe, he's right."
"Dad."
Kayce chuckled at his son's serious tone. "Right. Sorry. No swearing." He turned his attention back to you. "You didn't tell me you liked photography."
"I umm, I took pictures for the yearbook in high school and of places around town. The city used some in travel brochures, the newspaper printed a few of them, I even sold some prints but after high school...life happened and I stopped. Being here, it makes we want to again." You looked at Kayce and who had a soft, knowing smile on his and you smiled back. "So, what are you up to today? Tired of summer holidays yet?"
"No! School sucks." Tate scrunched his nose in disgust. "Oh! Guess what?!"
"What?"
"At breakfast, Grandpa said that since Dad's been working better, that me and Dad can move into the foreman's house."
Your eyes left Tate and went to Kayce, whose cheeks were a light shade of pink from embarrassment. "Really? That's exciting."
"Yeah! Wanna come help me pack up my room? I just need my toys and books, and my clothes. Grandpa said there's empty boxes in the storage room. Oh, wait. Do you have to work today?"
"I finished my work for the week yesterday so I have a three-day weekend. So, yes, I can come help you."
"Yay! I'll go help Grandpa get the boxes."
"I'll be there soon."
"Okay."
When the door closed behind him, you set the photos on the small side table nestled between the two chairs. "So."
"So." He reached for your hand and gave it a gentle tug. You went over and sat on his lap. "Uh..."
I won't start with his black and blue face then. "I thought Rip lived in the foreman's house."
"He does-did. Dad said, well, you heard Tate." Embarrassment flashed across his features again. "I've been doing better. I umm, I still get angry sometimes. I would never hurt you though. Never." He added quickly.
"I know you wouldn't." Your hand rested against the side of his neck, your thumb ran across his jaw carefully avoiding his bruised skin.
"I was the foreman but not really. I didn't act like it. I would lose my temper or not pay attention. Then you came. I wanted to be better, someone who was good enough for you because I sure as hell wasn't before."
"Kayc, you don't have to prove anything to me."
"Yes, I did. When I started getting back on track, Dad put me back in charge. Rip was doing it before."
Your eyes searched his face. "It was Rip."
"How..."
"The way you said his name." Your fingers trailed up and down his forearm while he held you.
His eyes went to your hand. "He just...he thinks he's always right. Especially, since he's been Dad's right-hand man since before I graduated. Then with everything that went on after...Tate, the navy." He looked up at you sheepishly but relaxed when he was met with your soft, caring eyes. "There's a rule on the ranch, no fighting and if you want someone to fight, it's the foreman. I admit Rip's been helpin' me work my way back up but yesterday he went off about something I said or didn't do, I can't even remember because it was stupid. I got mad and we fought. At least everyone knows who to fight now."
So he won. "Are you okay? Does it hurt?"
"I'm good, baby."
"So, I can kiss you?" You smiled.
A smile finally formed on his rugged face. "Come here." His hand slid into your hair and gently pulled you in. When you parted, Tate was standing there grinning. Kayce chuckled. "I guess it's time to start packing."
"I guess so."
"I get Violet!" Tate quickly grabbed your hand and you stood up.
"What if I want her to help me?"
"You wouldn't get anything done because you would just be kissin' the whole time."
A light shade of red stained your cheeks. "Okay. Let's go." You grabbed your pictures before ushering the giggling boy inside, with his dad on your heels.
"He isn't wrong though," Kayce whispered next to your ear before kissing the side of your head.
You gave him a playful shove. "Get to work."
"Yes, ma'am." He winked at you before grabbing the last two boxes that were sitting at the base of the stairs.
*
The second you crawled into bed, Kayce pulled you into his arms and you immediately cuddled against his side. "Mmm." You hummed in contentment as you rested your head on his shoulder. "This is nice."
"Mhm." His lips pressed a kiss on your forehead. "Thanks for your help today, baby."
"You're welcome. How does it feel to be in your own house?"
"It feels good, except for the fact that you're not in the same house anymore."
You giggled and tilted your head to look up at him. "I'm only what, a one minute walk away?"
"Yeah, but we've been in the same house for the last six months." He held you tighter when you curled in closer to him.
"It's hard to believe I've been here that long."
"Do you still like it here?"
"There's nowhere else on earth I would rather be." You stated after looking up at him.
He leaned in and your lips met for a long, sweet kiss before you settled back into his arms. "How come you stopped taking pictures? He was a piece of shit but even he couldn't have denied that you were amazing at it."
"After high school, I was going to work for a year to save up some money then go to school for photography. When Nick and I started dating he was okay with it. When I got back acceptance letters from the schools I applied to it was a couple weeks before my Mom died. She really wanted me to go. She was always really supportive." A sad smile graced your lips at the memory of her. "After she died Nick said he didn't want me to go. He said he would miss me too much, and he couldn't go with me because he just started working. And, it was too soon after she died so I wouldn't be able to focus at school. I should stay and move in with him because I couldn't afford a place of my own. I could apply again next year and he could come with me. When it was time to apply again he said he couldn't get transferred yet because it was still too soon."
"He could've though?"
"Yeah. When I found out I got mad but he said he did it for me. He said it was because I wouldn't make it through school let alone do it as a career. I wasn't that good. He told me it was because he couldn't leave yet so he didn't hurt my feelings. Then he went on about how I didn't have to work because his family was rich...I stopped doing it after that."
"Baby."
"It's okay. Being with him brought me here." You placed your hand on his cheek. "And, being here, being with you, it makes me want to again."
"He knew you were great at it, he just didn't want you to go because he was scared and jealous. If you want to go back to school for it, you should. I'm not going anywhere."
A smile pulled at the corners of your mouth as you tilted your head to look at him. "I'm perfectly happy doing what I am now. And, with Nick...I couldn't if I wanted to." He would find me...
"If you wanted to, I wouldn't let him anywhere near you."
"I know you wouldn't." Your heart swelled. The blanket slid around your waist as you left his side and climbed on top of him. You bent down, keeping your face inches from his. "I love you, Kayce."
"You have no idea how much I love you, Violet. " His hand slid into your hair and pulled you in. Your lips met for a slow kiss. The longer it carried on the steamier it became. After a few minutes, you both couldn't wait any longer.
Your hand pulled his boxers down just as far as they needed to before pulling your underwear to the side. A breathy moan left your lips when you sunk down onto him. He reached up and pulled you back down to crash his lips into yours. His lips parted so his tongue could explore your mouth. You continued to ride him and it wasn't long until you were close. "Kayc."
"Almost, baby." He gripped your hips and pounded into you.
"Mmm." The heat pooling in your core began to build rapidly. "Oh, god." His movements began to get messy and you knew he was on the edge. You ground into him once more before you both came together.
When you both came down from your highs, you collapsed next to him. His arms wrapped around you and tucked you against his side. "You could move in here. We've been spending more nights than not together lately anyway."
"Kayc," you shifted slightly so you could see his dreamy hazel eyes, "I love you and love spending the night with you but I think it should just be you and Tate here. I can still come and spend the night sometimes but moving in..."
He knew what you were thinking. "I know you're still scared that he's going to find you and you'll have to leave. You don't want to get too close." He moved onto his side to face you. His hand slid across your cheek and into your hair. "Violet, even if he does figure out that you're here, he is never going to get within a hundred feet of you. Everyone here will make sure of that. You're safe."
You nodded. "It's not just that." Your tongue slipped out and licked your dry lips. "You make me happy, happier than I have ever been. I'm scared of getting too close because if it ends, if we break up- I don't know what I would do without you and Tate."
"Baby, you are going to be stuck with me for the rest of your life." He stated firmly, his brown eyes pierced yours. You sniffed as tears welled in your eyes. A smile pulled at his lips while his thumb ran across your cheek. "I love you more than I ever thought was possible." Your lips met for a thorough, heartfelt kiss before he pulled you flush with his body. He swallowed your moan as the kiss became more passionate.
A sensual giggle left your lips when he climbed between your legs. You hooked your legs around his waist, pulling him closer.
"I can never get enough of you."
"Right back at you."
He smirked down at you before attacking your neck.
*****
Kayce made you wait in the truck while he got out and came around to your side, opening the door for you.
"Thank you." You smiled.
His hand immediately wrapped around yours. "I know going to a bar when we both don't drink seems stupid but they have the best burgers around. And, I know they're one of your favorites."
"You're the best." A giggle left your lips as you wrapped yourself around his arm. When you got to the entrance he let go of your hand and opened the door for you before placing it on the small of your back and guiding you inside. "I thought the ranch was cowboy, country-ish but this place..."
There were wood beams and posts, the bar was wood and the walls were clad in wood paneling. That's where the similarities between the lodge and the bar ended. Bottles of beer were put in metal pails with ice and served to you, there were neon signs with the names of popular beer brands. A large American flag hung on the wall. The floors were sheets of plywood and had the occasional piece of straw lying around that had been brought in by the cowboy boots that adorned everyone's feet.
"Yeah, it's nothin' fancy. We couldn't come here before because if we did come to town, Tate's been with us. I should've picked a better place for our first date off the ranch but you don't like fancy and food-"
"Food definitely wins." You finished with a grin. "Speaking of which, you mentioned something about burgers."
Kayce chuckled and slid his arm around your waist. "Let's find a table." As you moved through the crowded building towards a few empty tables, he kept pulling you closer and closer to his side.
You assumed it was because it was date night but even after you ordered your food, he sat on your left instead of across the small square table you were at. He also kept moving his chair closer and touching your hand or arm. Not uncommon since he was touchy-feely but not while his shoulders were squared. It wasn't until a man with a plaid shirt and brown cowboy hat came up to your table that you realized why.
"Kayce Dutton, is that you? I haven't seen you in god knows how long." He greeted even though his focus was entirely on you. "And, who is this fine thing? You're not from around here. I would've remembered someone as gorgeous as you."
Your boyfriend tensed up while he glared at the man. You placed your hand on Kayce's arm, silently begging him to calm down.
"Now I know why we haven't seen you in town lately. You've been shacked up with this sweet little thing at your daddy's house."
Kayce stood up abruptly, his chair falling back in the process. "Watch your fucking mouth."
"Easy tiger." The man chuckled and turned his hungry eyes back to you. "We went to high school together. I'm Jesse Miller. And, you are?"
"Not interested."
He clutched his shirt above his heart. "Ouch. You really know how to break a guy's heart."
"It's time for you to leave." Kayce fumed.
Jesse rolled his eyes before grinning at you. "I'll see you around, beautiful."
Your boyfriend's chest heaved, his fists started to come up, but Jesse left, rejoining his friends at the bar.
"Hey." Your hand wrapped around his fist, which unclenched. His fingers mixed with yours. You gave a gentle tug and he sat down on his chair that a server had picked up on their way by during the confrontation.
"Are you okay?"
"Yeah, I'm good. Are you?"
"I should've hit him for how he talked to you, for ruining our date." He started getting tense again so you ran your thumb across the back of his.
"He didn't ruin our date." You slid your chair closer to his and leaned in.
He did the same. "No?"
"No." Your lips pressed against his. When you pulled back, your teeth tugged on his lower lip. He let out a low growl and you giggled sensually. "Burgers first."
"And, you for dessert." His hand quickly slid into your hair and pulled you back in. This time you moaned when the brief yet toe-curling kiss ended. "Fuck, you're cute."
Your cheeks flushed as your server set your burgers and fries in front of you. After you both thanked her and she left, you brushed your foot against your cowboy's denim-covered shin. "I have a feeling you're going to need your energy for dessert so eat up."
"Yes, ma'am." He smirked the smirk that drove you crazy before picking up his burger.
*
"Okay, you were right about the burgers here. They are amazing. I'm so full, I can barely move."
Kayce chuckled and slung his arm around your shoulders, pulling you against him. He was about to say something when a cocky voice cut in.
"Leaving so soon, sweetheart?"
Your hold on Kayce's hand tightened as you continued walking past Jesse.
"Awe, come on, baby." Jesse's hand wrapped around your wrist. "I'm a hundred times more of a man than this loser ever will be."
"Get your fucking hand off her." Kayce spat. His old high school classmate released your arm and Kayce tucked you behind him.
"Can we go?" You asked your boyfriend, who was rigid with anger and shooting daggers at Jesse with his eyes.
"Run off and have your fun," Jesse smirked as he looked you up and down. "She'll be in my bed after because you couldn't satisfy her."
Your boyfriend's fist connected with the smug cowboy's face. "Kayce. Kayce, stop." He hit him a total of three times before his friends, who were at the bar with him, rushed to his side.
"I'm good. I'm good." Jesse said, stopping them from retaliating. He cracked his jaw and let out a chuckle. "The Navy taught you how to fight. I hear they taught ya how to kill too."
"Stay the fuck away from her," Kayce pronounced each word firmly, harshly.
"You make it sound like a challenge," Jesse's eyes bore into you, "everyone knows I never back down from a challenge."
The look in his eyes made you cower against Kayce. "Can we go? Please."
He immediately turned his attention to you. "Yeah, baby. Let's go home." His arm wrapped around your waist and pulled you against him when he saw you shaking. When you got to the truck, instead of going to the passenger door, he guided you to the driver's side.
You climbed up and stayed in the middle of the bench, wanting to be close to him. He reached across your lap and pulled you flush with his side before starting the truck and driving off.
"I'm sorry." The fingers on his right hand nervously fiddled with the hem of your dress. "What he said, the way he looked at you, grabbing your wrist; it wasn't right. He deserved it. I'm sorry if I scared you or if it made you think of him."
Memories of Nick had played through your head when Kayce got mad when he hit him, but he didn't need to know that. It would just make him more upset. "You don't have to apologize, Kayc." You wrapped yourself around his arm, reassuring him. "Jesse or whatever his name is creeped me out but that's it."
"You don't have to worry about him, baby. He's not going to touch you. I'll make sure of it."
After kissing his cheek, you cuddled against him, letting out a content sigh. He kissed your head and the rest of the drive was spent in a comfortable silence.

Tumblr media
You couldn’t believe it. You were about to enter the place where you used to work for five years. You used to work at the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch. You worked as one of the wranglers, but that all ended. It all ended because you got pregnant. And the one that got you pregnant was Kayce, your boss's son. You two had a secret relationship while you were working on the ranch. The moment that you found out that you were pregnant. You immediately packed up your bags and left the ranch without telling anyone. You didn’t want the others to find out that you were pregnant, and most definitely. Who got you pregnant, because if they did. You could be in deep trouble. So that’s why you left, but little did you know. When Kayce found out the next day. He was upset. He didn’t know what to do without you. He hoped you would come back again someday and explain why you left without telling anyone. And that someday is today.
“Here goes nothin’, you sighed to yourself. You took your car out of park and drove through the entrance of the ranch. The moment you started driving through the entrance of the ranch. You felt your heart start to beat very fast, and you even felt your palms start becoming sweaty against the steering wheel. You had so many things running through your head right now. You weren’t sure how Kayce and even John were going to react to you being back at the ranch and even having a baby on your hip.
When you finally reached the house. You parked your car and got out. You grabbed your daughter from the backseat and took her out of her car seat, and placed her on your hip. While you were walking up to the house. You noticed Kayce's truck and even John’s truck were parked outside. You were now even more nervous than you were when you first arrived because you know that the moment you knock on the front door. You’re going to face Kayce or either John, or either of the both of them.
You walked up the steps and to the front door of the house. You raised your free hand to knock on the door. You were waiting there anxiously for the door to be opened. The moment the door opened. You were face to face with Kayce.
“Oh my goodness,” Kayce said. He was surprised that he could barely get any words out of his mouth. He couldn’t even gather the fact that you were standing right in front of him. For the majority of the past year and a half. He thought that you left Montana and never looked back, but here you are. Back at the ranch where you used to work, and the same place that you called home. Another thing he couldn’t even gather was the fact that you had a baby on your hip.
“Uh- can we talk? please,” you asked him nervously.
“Yeah,” Kayce nodded. He moved out of the way, so then you could enter the house. Once you entered the house, he closed the door behind you. Then he walked towards the living room and you followed right behind him.
“Please sit,” He motioned towards one of the couches when you walked into the living room. You took a seat on the couch, and you set your daughter down on the ground right in front of your feet. Kayce sat down on the opposite side of the couch that you were sitting on.
“Uh- I don’t even know how to explain everything,” you said, as you started to play with the promise ring that was on your finger. The promise ring was a gift from Kayce. You received the ring as a fourth-anniversary present. You still can’t believe that you still wear the ring on your finger. After everything that happened, you should have taken it off, but you just couldn’t.
“Well, you could explain why you decided to pack up your things and left without telling anyone. Or you could explain why you’re back here with a baby,” Kayce stated. His voice sounded cold and angry.
“Well, the whole reason why I left was because I got pregnant…a-and I-I’m back here with a baby because I thought it was a good idea to finally come back, so then you could finally meet our daughter,” you said, as you turned your head towards Kayce’s direction. All of a sudden you noticed that he had a soft look in his eyes. You were now hoping his voice wasn’t cold and angry anymore after what you just said to him.
“Wait. Our daughter?”
“Yeah,” you nodded. You had tears starting to form in your eyes. After you said that, you were regretting leaving in the first place. Kayce shouldn't be meeting his daughter in this type of way. He should have met her the moment she was born. The moment when she was placed on your chest.
“I’m gonna need a minute,” Kayce said, as he got up from the couch and walked away toward the kitchen.
“Okay,” you nodded. “I’ll be here when you get back.” You picked up your daughter from the floor and placed her back on your hip.
When Kayce walked into the kitchen. He walked in and immediately made eye contact with his father since he was in there. He was pouring coffee into his coffee cup. Kayce was now wondering if his father heard the whole conversation that went down in the living room not too long ago.
“Son, do you want to explain to me who you were just talking to, in the living room?” Also explain to me while you were talking to that someone, I heard them say, ‘our daughter?’
“Fuck,” Kayce whispered under his breath. He was mad that his father heard the whole conversation that he had with you. He was now going to have to explain to his father the truth and how he technically just found out today that he has been a father for at least a year now. “Uh- I was talking to Y/N.”
“Y/N? As in, Y/N Y/L/N? The one that used to work on the ranch?” John questioned his son.
“Yes,” Kayce nodded. “And the whole reason why you heard her say to me, ‘our daughter’ is because of the looks of it. I got her pregnant.”
When those words came out of Kayce’s mouth. John didn’t even know what to say, or how to react. The only thing he knew was that he was technically a grandfather now, and his son was a father. There was just quietness in the air. Kayce didn’t like that. He wanted his father to say something to him about what he just said.
“Dad? Aren’t you going to say anything about what I just told you?” Kayce asked him.
John put his coffee cup on the kitchen counter and faced toward where Kayce was standing. “Son, what do you want me to say?”
“Uh- I don’t know. Anything, to be honest,” He shrugged his shoulders.
“Well, I guess I could say that I’m pretty okay with the situation. But…it just upsets me that you were going behind my back and started to date her, and even gotten her pregnant. And you know how I feel when you or either your siblings go behind my back and do something,” John explained.
“How do you think I feel?” Kayce said. “I’m upset because obviously when she found out she was pregnant she just decided to leave and not say anything to anyone or anything, or even explain how she and I were about to become parents for the first time.”
All John could do was put his head down, and look down at his feet. He couldn’t bear the fact that his son was angry and even upset with the whole situation.
“What should I do, dad? Should I tell her to leave and never look back? Or should I start over with her?”
John looked up from the ground and looked at Kayce. “What you should do is start over with her. Get to know the whole story about why she left without an explanation, and get to know your daughter. Especially find out what her name is, and exactly how old she is at the moment.”
“Okay,” Kayce nodded. He walked out of the kitchen and back to the living room where you were at. When he walked in, he saw you were still sitting in the same spot as you were when he first left to go to the kitchen, and he even saw that you had your daughter on your hip again.
“So? Is everything okay?”
“Yeah. Everything is okay. My dad was in the kitchen when I walked in, so I explained to him about who I was talking to, and how by the looks of it. I got you pregnant,” Kayce explained.
“Omg. What did he say? Is he mad about this? Because if he is, I can leave and never come back, and we can all forget that this ever happened,” you said, as you stood up and were about to walk to the front door and head out with your daughter.
“No he isn’t mad about this,” Kayce reassured you.
“Oh,” you said as you sat back down on the couch. You put your daughter on the floor right in front of you, just like you did earlier when you arrived at the house. “Well, what did he say about this then?”
“Well, he told me that he’s okay with this situation. But on the other hand, he’s upset that I was going behind his back, and started to date you, and then, of course, ended up getting you pregnant,” Kayce explained. “Also speaking of me getting you pregnant, why did you leave after you found out?
You couldn’t even look Kayce in the eyes. You could tell by the tone of Kayce’s voice. He wasn’t happy at all. You took a deep breath and said, “I left after I found out because I didn't want anyone to find out about it, because if anyone did. Then I would start getting questions about who got me pregnant. Plus, I didn’t want anyone to find out the truth about you and me.”
“Why didn’t you tell me? We could have figured something out.”
“I don’t know,” you shook your head. “I panicked and I thought the right option was to leave and not say anything. But now, I regret doing that. I regret not telling you about how we were going to become parents for the first time, and I regret not having your dad know the truth about us. I’m sorry. I’m sorry for not telling you. I messed up badly.”
Kayce scooted closer to where you were sitting on the couch, and put his two hands on your cheeks to stop you from rambling. “Hey. Look at me.” You looked at him, and when you did. Kayce noticed that you started to form tears in your eyes. It broke his heart. He always hated seeing you upset in any type of way. “It’s okay. I promise.”
“So, you’re not mad or anything like that?” you asked.
“No,” He shook his head. He took his hands off your cheeks. “Just a little upset, but I’ll get over it real soon. I promise. Also, I have two questions to ask you.”
“Okay,” you nodded. “What are the two questions?”
“The first question is can we start over? And Is it possible that I can get to know who my daughter is?” Kayce asked.
“Of course,” you smiled. You picked up your daughter from the floor. She was just chewing on her fingers when you picked her up. “Kayce, this is our daughter Sarah Elizabeth Dutton.”
“She’s so cute,” Kayce said.
“She is, she isn’t,” you smiled down at her.
“Also how old is she?”
You looked up and looked at Kayce, “She’s one year old.”
“Wow,” Kayce said. “Next thing you know she’ll be two years old.”
“Yeah,” you nodded. “That just shows that time flies.”
“Yes. It does,” Kayce agreed.
“I have a question for you now,” you said.
“What is it?”
“Do you want to hold our daughter?” you asked him.
“Yes,” Kayce nodded.
You handed Sarah to Kayce. Kayce took her from your arms, and set her on his lap. Sarah didn’t get fussy about how she wasn’t sitting in her mom’s lap anymore. But of course, that was a good thing though. While he was holding her, Sarah kept on babbling. You and Kayce didn’t even know what she was babbling about, but you two thought it was the cutest thing ever. Since she was babbling, and talking. You had the perfect question to ask her. “Sarah. Can you say ‘Dada’?”
Surprisingly not too long after you asked her that question. You and Kayce both heard her say, ‘Dada.’ The moment Kayce heard that word. He started crying. He wasn’t crying because he was upset or anything like that. He was crying because he was happy. He was happy that his daughter said the word ‘Dada.’
“Omg! She actually said it, Kayce. She said ‘Dada’, you said happily.
“Yes. She did.”
--- --- ---
It’s been about two hours since you came over to the Dutton Ranch and explained everything to Kayce. After you were able to get Sarah to say ‘Dada.’ You and Kayce were able to catch up on everything, Plus, on top of that, John was able to get to meet his granddaughter. He was happy about that.
“One last question. I promise,” Kayce said to you. He was pretty nervous to ask you the question that he's about to ask you, but since you and he have both officially agreed to get back together and raise Sarah with each other and be a family. In the end, the question is going to make perfect sense.
“What is it?”
“Well, I know that we technically haven’t been back together for not even an hour yet, but I was wondering, do you move in and live with me?” Kayce asked you.
“Yes. Of course,” you nodded. “But what about all of my stuff? Everything I have is back at my apartment.”
“Let’s worry about that later. Okay?”
“Okay,” you nodded.
“For now, let’s just focus on us, and on our daughter who is sleeping peacefully in my arms right now,” Kayce leaned down and kissed the top of Sarah’s forehead. Kayce couldn’t get over how adorable Sarah was. He loved how much she looks like him. He was hoping that his mom was smiling down at him and being proud that he’s a father.
“I think she’s going to become your little sidekick when she gets older,” you commented.
“I think so,” Kayce agreed.
The sight in front of you was making your heart melt. You couldn’t get over how happy Kayce looked holding Sarah. The look in his eyes was just filled with happiness and love. You were glad that you decided to come back to the ranch. You still weren’t happy with yourself about the decision you made when you did find out you were pregnant with Sarah, but that’s all in the past now. The only thing that matters now, was that you and Kayce were back together and that you and he were going to be able to raise your daughter as a couple.

Stargazing
Kayce Dutton x Reader Warning: Slight mentions of violence Word Count: 204
“Maybe we should change our names and run away.” Your head was on his chest looking up at him. The two of you had filled the bed of his truck with pillows and blankets so you could stargaze comfortably in the fields on the ranch.
“I wish it were that simple, I really do.” He met your gaze. Kayce knew that his family did many not-so-legal things and that because you lived on the ranch with him, you had witnessed some of that first-hand. And while it wasn't your first time seeing violence, he hated that being with him put you in harm's way, and in a place where you saw the violence more often than you would if you weren't together.
“Maybe one day things will be different.”
“I hope so darling.” He leaned forward kissing your forehead before looking back up at the stars. That's how it always went. Whenever you would watch the stars you and Kayce would talk about if life was different. But at the end of it, you both knew leaving would be hard. Kayce would fight for it if you asked, but you would always tell him you were happy as long as you were with him.

You groaned hearing your phone ring for the 20x in the past hour but couldn't be bothered to get up as you were currently fighting cramps making you unable to move. You slowly start sitting up, wincing as you did before grabbing your phone.
"Kace?" You asked answering the phone as another cramp shot through your body.
"Finally, I've been calling and texting you for the past hour." He said as you groaned.
"I know I'm sorry, my cramps are really bad and I couldn't move for a while to get my phone off the dresser. I'm sorry baby I didn't mean to worry you." You said.
"Cramps? Oh, sweetheart, I'm sorry. Do you need me to bring you anything?" He asked concerned.
"A gun." You said making him laugh.
"Sorry sweetheart, I love you but not that much. I should be home in an hour or two, okay?" He said even though he was already planning on heading home to take care of you.
"That's fine. I'll be here waiting for Mother Nature to take me out of my misery." You said.
"I love you, sweetheart." He said making you smile.
"I love you too baby." You said before hanging up and laying back down.
Once Kayce got the clear that he could leave work, he climbed into his truck and headed to the store to pick up some stuff for you knowing that this time of the month was rough on you. After grabbing you some stuff, he headed to your favorite takeout place to pick up dinner before heading home.
Once he got home, he set the stuff down on the table before walking down the hall to check on you. He slightly cracked the door as he walked in, and saw you laying there watching whatever was on the tv until your eyes landed on him.
"Baby, what are you doing here? I thought you weren't going to be home for another hour." You said as he took a seat on the bed.
"You should know the second you said you weren't feeling good, I was gonna come home and take care of you. How are you feeling?" He asked running a hand through your hair.
"My cramps are so bad today, I can hardly move." You said.
"Oh sweets, I'm sorry. But I'm here now and I bought treats." He said walking to the living room and grabbing the bags he had set down.
"You did?" You asked as he walked back into the room.
"Of course I did. I grabbed dinner as well, but I swung by the store and picked up some stuff since I couldn't remember if you had everything you usually need." He said making your heart as swell.
"I would hug you and kiss you, but I can't move." You said making him laugh as he leaned down and placed a kiss on your lips.
"It's alright sweetheart, let me get some aspirin so you can get some relief, would you like me to draw a bath?" He asked you.
"That sounds nice actually." You said as he helped you sit up so you would be able to take your medicine.
After taking some aspirin, he went to go run you a bath and helped you into once it was ready, leaving you so you could warm your sweats in the dryer, so they are warm for you once you got out.
"How are you feeling?" He asked walking in and checking on you and placing your sweats on the counter before taking a seat on the edge of the tub.
"Much better, thank you." You said leaning up and kissing him.
"No need to thank me, sweetheart, I'm glad your feeling better.  Are you hungry or do want to wait a bit?" He asked you.
"Can we wait a bit?" You asked him as he nodded his head.
He helped you out of the tub and let you get dressed as he got your favorite movie set up, and a few minutes later you walked out and climbed into his arms.
"Thank you for taking care of me." You said to him once you were in his embrace.
"Of course sweetheart, I hate seeing you in pain. Get some rest, we can eat once you wake up." He said pressing a kiss to your lips.
"I love you, baby." You said to him.
"I love you more sweetheart." He said to you.

When Dutton's Marry, They Go Big
Tumblr media
Request from wattpad mackleann - Kayce and the reader come back from their honeymoon and the bunkhouse crew talk about how amazing the wedding was ( huge wedding 😏 )
"There's nothing that says we have to go back today. We could just stay out here." Kayce had his arms wrapped around me from behind while I was trying to put my shirt on.
Kayce and I had recently got married a few weeks ago. And we had been spending our honeymoon here at the Dutton Summer Camp. I giggled trying to not cave into his embrace when he kissed my neck. “Kayce, we have to go back to work.”
“Your mother doesn’t need you for another week right?” He mumbled into my neck until I spun around in his arms.
My mother Lynelle Perry was going to be stepping down and leaving Montana in the coming weeks since she got a higher job in government. Kayce’s father John was taking over her position as governor of the state. “No, she's busy helping your father. But I want to spend time with her before she leaves.”
“One more day won’t hurt anybody, darling.” Kayce leaned down, capturing my lips deeply.
I squealed when he got the chance to pick me up by my thighs and I wrapped my legs around his waist. “Kayce!” He carried me over to the edge of the bed sitting me down on it where we both fell backwards on the mattress.
“By the way you're looking at me right now I can tell that you’re not complaining too much.” Kayce smirked down at me only wearing some blue jeans and his boots that he kicked off.
Running my hands up his chest I wrapped my hands down his neck drawing him in for another long round of the morning. “Who I am kidding you’re hard to resist, Dutton.”
“So are you Mrs. Dutton.” He mumbled in between kisses and we laid in the bedsheets together till the next morning when we had to get back to the ranch.
Kayce drove the truck up underneath the Yellowstone Dutton ranch sign. We parked outside the main house where I turned in my seat facing him. “You know we could always hide out in the bunkhouse till the cowboys are done with work for the day.” A smirk was playing off my lips.
“I like the way you think, baby.” He smiled hoping out of his seat and I scrambled to get my door open. Kayce scopped me up before my feet could even hit the ground, carrying me to the bunkhouse door.
I giggled, wrapping my arms around his neck and he kicked the door opened. He sat me down on the nearest bed beginning to remove my shirt until someone else's voice entered the building. “You two look just like you did the day you got married.”
“Ryan! What the hell are you doing here?” Kayce broke the kiss, breaking the kiss that we was sharing seeing the cowboy standing at the edge of the bed.
Ryan raised a brow. “I should be asking, are you going to sleep on my bed right now?”
“Oh god! We didn’t mean for that to happen.” Covering my face with my hands I groaned feeling somewhat embarrassed at the very thought of what we we’re about to do before he walked in. “Wait what did you mean we are just like how we were on our wedding day?”
Ryan chuckled with a smile. “Your wedding was huge and I don’t mean it’s just because of who your mother is. But I also mean weddings and other big events don’t really happen here.”
“Ryan, Rip says we have to move more cattle across the ranch before Gator starts dinner. What….what are you talking to these two about?” Colby enters the barn seeing the three of us talking.
Ryan turns toward his fellow cowboy working. “I was talking about their wedding.”
“Ah yeah. I remember that day. That was the biggest amount of people I had ever seen here before. And the food spread was insane.” Colby throws his head back, running his fingers through his black curly locks.
Thinking back on my wedding day I smiled at the memory. Kayce had been dressed in a light white dress shirt, black tie and his only pair of not dirty blue jeans and some boots. I was wearing my dress obviously that had lace all over the train. I had put some of my hair up with a flower crown braid leaving the rest of it down going down my back. Paring it with my light tan cowgirl boots instead of heels. “I didn’t think you guys were so focused on our wedding. We weren’t even that focused on the details after we got to the ceremony and said the words "I Do.”
“Okay we’ll y’all should get out of here before Rip comes and kick your asses or better yet I’ll kick your asses if you tell anyone else we are back yet.” Kayce threatened sitting down on the bed beside me glaring at the two cowboys who were still standing in the bunkhouse doorway.
Ryan raised his hand up in the air. “Chill out man. We’re going.”
“Who knew married Dutton’s could be more demanding than they already were before.” Colby mumbled exiting the bunkhouse with his fellow cowboy.
Kayce ran a hand through his hair looking back at me. “Are you reconsidering coming back home early like I knew I would?”
“Possibly….do ya think we could sneak back to the truck without them noticing?” I asked him, grabbing his discarded cowboy hat up from the dirty floor putting it on my head after dusting it off.
Kayce smirked the same expression as me. He moved forward, capturing his lips with mine. “You are a genius. But we could just drive back to the Summer Camp for a few more days.”
“Fine Mr. Dutton you win.” I caved knowing he wouldn't leave me alone until I agreed. We grabbed our jackets and ran as fast as possible to his truck in the driveway. I knew the day I said yes I was in for one hell of a ride changing my last name to Dutton and I wouldn't change one thing.
Comments really appreciated ❤️

Chapter Nine
Tumblr media
Even though it was the middle of August, the air was cool. It probably had something to do with the fact that you were sitting on the back porch at four-thirty in the morning.
"There you are, baby." Kayce sat down on the steps next to you. His arm slid around your back while he kissed your temple. "What are you doing out here?"
You looked ahead of you so he followed your gaze to a bald eagle sitting in a tree. Lee. His hold on you tightened. "I was talking."
"About what?"
"You," a smile pulled at your lips. A comfortable silence settled between you while you watched the bird fly off. "Lee knew I left California to get away from Nick. A few weeks before he died he found me sitting back here. The sun had just started coming up and he asked why I was up so early. I tried to hide it but he knew I was crying. He sat down and made me tell him what was wrong." You took a breath. "I get nightmares sometimes about Nick. Sometimes they're just memories of what he did, other times it's him finding me."
"Baby," the hand that wasn't around your waist reached for your hand, "why didn't you tell me?"
"I don't get them when we sleep in the same bed."
"You should move in with me then."
"Kayc."
"I know. Just me and Tate, for a while at least. Did you have a nightmare tonight?"
"No. I just woke up and couldn't get back to sleep. I didn't want to wake you." Your fingers played with the button on the cuff of his sleeve. "Lee always told me I was safe here." You let out a small giggle. "And, that even though you hadn't asked me out yet, you wouldn't let anyone touch me."
Kayce chuckled. "He was right about that. I wouldn't have let your ex or anyone else near you. I still won't."
You smiled at him before looking out at the trees.
"Letty?"
"Hmm?"
"Do you feel safe here?"
"Yes." Your eyes met his hazel brown ones. "You make me feel safe."
He smiled and ran his hand across your jaw, pulling you in for a kiss. "I love you, Letty."
"I know." You smiled. "I love you too."
"I gotta drive around and check some fences. What do you say we grab some coffee and you come keep me company? And, instead of sleeping in your bed again because Tate wanted to spend the weekend having a sleepover with his grandpa, we could spend the night at my place?"
"Yes and yes."
"Tate will be here with Dad so we have the whole day and night to ourselves." His perfect grin formed before he kissed you. "Go get changed. I'll get the coffee."
"Meet you in the kitchen in five minutes."
After going inside, you both walked through the living room to the hallway. As you went to walk passed the kitchen to your room, he stopped you. "Baby, are you okay?"
You looked up at him and smiled softly. "You worry about me too much."
"I worry about you just as much as I should be. Now answer the question, beautiful."
Your hands came up and rested against the sides of his neck, your thumbs running across his stubble-covered jaw. "I'm okay. Just missing your brother."
"Me too."
"He would be so proud of you, Kayce."
"After kicking my ass for waiting so long to ask you out."
You giggled. "Yeah, that's probably true."
"Thank you for being there for me through that and every day since then."
"You're welcome. But, you don't have to thank me. I wanted to and I needed you just as much as you needed me."
His hand ran across your cheek. "I still need you."
"Right back at you." You rose to your toes and kissed him before going to change.
*
You leaned against the fence post watching Kayce while he finished securing a section of barbed wire that he had to replace.
"There," he straightened up, "that- What?"
"Nothing."
"Nothin'?" He came up behind you and wrapped his arms around your waist. "What are you thinking about?"
A smile pulled at the corners of your mouth. "You." You leaned back against him while you both looked out over the pasture to the mountains.
"Yeah?"
"Mhm."
"Is that all I'm gonna get?" He chuckled and turned you to face him.
"I just..." your hands rested on his chest, "I can't believe I'm here with you. You are the most hardworking, caring, understanding man I have ever met." Tears pricked the back of your eyes. "I would go through everything in California again if I knew that it led me here."
In response, he grabbed your face and kissed you. "I love you more than anything on this earth, Letty. Well, you and the kid."
"I love you too." You giggled and slid your hands over his shoulders, clasping them behind his neck as your lips met his. When the kiss started to grow heated, you stepped back. "You need to work."
"I just finished the last one."
"Yeah?"
The smirk that drove you crazy, in the best possible way, formed. "Yeah, now get back here." His hand slid into your hair pulling you in. As the kiss intensified, he picked you up and carried you to the tailgate of his truck. It was already down with tools sitting on it so he pushed them to the side before setting you on it. His eyes met yours and you smiled.
While you unzipped and shimmied out of your jeans, he unbuckled his belt and pushed it down. "Kayc," you moaned when he slowly thrust into you.
"Fuck, baby." His fiery eyes met yours. "You're fucking perfect."
Your hips rolled to meet his with every thrust. "Yes," you moaned when one of his hands left your hips and went between you to your clit. "Yes. Yes. Kayce." It didn't take long for heat to start pooling.
When your orgasm had passed, he took your hands which had been gripping his shoulders and lay you on your back. "I want one more, baby." You nodded as you looked up at him, making the smirk you love form. He put your legs over his shoulders and started pounding into you.
You could feel a rough section of the tailgate scrape your ass cheek but you didn't care. He had you at the perfect angle and you started to clench around him. "Oh, god. Kayce."
"Yes, baby. Give me one more." His smirk reappeared. "Come for me, Letty." That put you over the edge and you fell apart. He came seconds later, spilling into you.
"You good, baby?" He asked as you lay there trying to catch your breath.
"Mhm," you mumbled with a smile.
He chuckled and zipped his jeans up before putting your underwear and jeans on you as far as he could get them with you still lying down.
After carefully getting to your feet, you pulled them up the rest of the way.
"Hi." Kayce smiled down at you, his hands going to your waist.
"Hi." Your fingers brushed his hair off his forehead. "That was...wow."
His smirk formed before he kissed you. "I'm gonna have to agree with you on that. Now get your sexy ass out of the way so I can clean up."
You giggled as he squeezed your sides. "What do you have to do now?" You asked as you leaned against the side of his truck.
"I gotta go to town to pick up a few things." He informed, closing the tailgate. "Where do you think you're goin'?" His hand wrapped around yours, stopping you from going around to the passenger side.
"Maybe I don't want to sit beside you." You teased.
He backed you against the truck and pressed himself against you, keeping you in place. "You don't, huh?" The smirk that drove you crazy formed.
"Don't look at me like that we both know because we both know what comes next."
"You. Once, sometimes more."
"Kayce!" You gave him a shove so you could slip free.
His laugh followed you as you climbed into the truck. "You're cute when you blush."
"Oh my god." You groaned, burying your face in his shoulder while he buckled his seatbelt.
"Even cuter when you come."
Your jaw dropped as the red on your cheeks darkened.
He reached across your lap when you tried sliding across the seat. "I'll stop."
"Says the guy with the mischievous grin on his face."
"Get back here."
You gave in with a smile and settled in next to him. "You're lucky I love you."
"The luckiest." His lips pressed against your temple before he started the truck.
When you got closer to town, you looked in the rearview mirror and started taming your hair. "You should leave it."
"It's a mess."
"You have that just had sex look."
"I did just have sex."
"Yes," he squeezed your knee, "but everyone else will see it and know you're mine."
You giggled, "I'm pretty sure everyone will know that without advertising what we just did. You always hold my hand when we go to town, or have your arm around me, your hand on my back." After smoothing the last tangled strand, you leaned back against the seat. "I'm guessing you don't hold Ryan or Colby's hand when you go to town to pick stuff up."
"Definitely not." His laugh echoed through the cab.
A comfortable silence settled between you as you rested your head on his shoulder and thought about how much your life had changed in the last seven and a half months. You escaped from Nick and the nightmare he put you through and ended up meeting a man so good you didn't think could even exist. Going through hell had brought you to the most amazing version of heaven on earth. And, you would endure it all over again so you could end up with the cowboy sitting beside you and his son.
*
"What are you thinking about?" Kayce asked as he joined you on the porch of the foreman's house. You had made his mom's stew and biscuits for dinner so he offered to put the leftovers away. "You've been kind of quiet since I got back from helping Dad in the barn before dinner. I told you it would just be us today, I'm sorry."
"No, it's okay. It's not that."
"Then what is it?"
Your fingers picked at the cuff of your sleeve. "When you were with your dad and I was inside with Tate making the biscuits, Tate...he told me he loves me. He's said it before but it's always just been love you. When the biscuits were in the oven we were talking about what he and his grandpa did today. I was leaning back against the counter, when he was done telling me he came over and wrapped his arms around my waist. He looked up at me and he said I love you." Tears started to pool in your eyes while you stared down at the ends of your sleeves. "He told me he was happy I came here because I'm kind of like his mom. Then he rested the side of his face against my stomach and hugged me. He laughed and said I make you happy so you're not as grumpy anymore so I can never leave."
Kayce chuckled, "he's right, you do make me happy." When you continued staring at your hands, he took hold of your chin and lifted it, making you look at him. "Hey, talk to me." Concern was evident in his voice when he saw tears start to trickle from your eyes. "Was it because he thinks you're his mom? I'll tell him not to call you that."
"It wasn't that."
"Nick?"
You nodded as you drew in a shaky breath. "If he finds me he said he would kill whoever helped me."
"Baby, it's been almost eight months since you got away from him. He would have found you by now."
"But, what if he's still looking? What if he does eventually find me?"
"If he does, he's not going to get a chance to kill anyone."
"What if you're all gone and just me and Tate are here? What...Tate-" A small sob cut you off.
Kayce wiped away your tears. "I know what you're thinking and you're not leaving. Tate loves you, I love you. Hell, everyone on this ranch loves you. You belong here." His fingers tucked your hair behind your ear before going back to try and dry your cheeks. "I'll tell you what. Tate's closet in the main house is five times bigger than it needs to be. Since we spend most of the time there anyway, especially you and him when I'm working, we'll close in part of the closet so he can hide in there. I'll make the door look like part of the wall so no one will know any different. Okay?"
You sniffed. "Okay."
"Come here." You stood up and he guided you onto his lap so you were straddling him. His hand rested against the side of your neck. "Tate's not the only one who thinks you're kind of like his mom. You are beyond amazing with him. I know we've only been together for three months but I know that God sent you to me. We belong together, Letty."
"Kayce." A smile finally formed before you pressed your lips against his. It didn't take long before you both needed more. He stood up taking you with him and carried you to his bed.
After setting you on your feet, his hands went to work on your jeans. As he pulled them down, his hand ran across the scrape you got from the tailgate making you flinch. "Did I scratch you?" When you both looked you realized what it was from. "Shit. I should've put a blanket or something down."
"It's not that bad... if you kiss it better it will be as good as new."
"I can't have my baby hurt." He smirked, sinking to his knees and doing what you said. But, he didn't stop there. He kissed his way across your hip before taking off your underwear and jeans and gently pushed you onto the bed.
"Kayc," you moaned as he buried his face between your legs.
His hands slid under your thighs and gripped your hips, securing you in place. "You taste so damn good." He groaned before going to work again.
"Oh, god." After a couple of minutes of just using his tongue, one of his hands left your hip. His fingers dipped inside you while his mouth focused on the bundle of sensitive nerves. Your hands dove into his brown wavy hair. It took only minutes for your stomach to begin to tighten and waves of intense pleasure coursed through you.
When you came down from your high, Kayce's lips crashed against yours. He ushered you backwards, away from the edge, so he could climb between your legs. You could taste yourself on him as his tongue danced with yours.
He slowly thrust into you. His hand went to the back of your neck and he lifted you. "You're mine." His eyes pierced yours.
Whenever Nick told you that you were his it would make you feel hopeless and scared. Hearing Kayce tell you that you're his drove home the fact that this is where you were meant to be, with him and his son. "I'm yours." You breathed out, your eyes never leaving his.
*****
You parked one of the Dutton's work trucks in front of the grocery store as a patrol car was making its way down the street. While you got out, the police car parked behind the truck, blocking you in.
"Ma'am," one of them greeted as they walked up to you.
"Hi."
"Can I ask why you have the Dutton's truck?"
"I'm umm, getting groceries. I work for them." You swallowed nervously as memories of Nick in his police uniform filled your head.
"We've never seen you around town before."
"I've been here since the middle of February."
"Uh-huh." They exchanged doubtful looks. Sweat covered your palms. "Can I see your license, please?"
Panic set in. "I-I didn't steal it."
He nodded. "Let me just run your license and we'll get this cleared up."
"You can call John. He'll tell you I work there."
"We will after we check your license. Is it in
there?" He asked as he stepped forward and dumped the contents of your purse onto the driver's seat. You were frozen in fear. After opening your wallet, he pulled out your driver's license. "Well, Violet Smith from Los Angeles, I'll be right back."
Your heart rate was out of control, you were trembling. The officers could tell you were guilty of something so the other officer stood in front of you, corralling you between the open truck door and driver's seat, while the other went to the car.
Seconds later, the officer returned from the car. "I think it's time you tell us your real name because it isn't Violet Smith."
"I-I-"
"Cuff her."
"No."
"Put your hands behind your back."
"Please. Just call John. Please!" Tears started falling from your eyes.
Once the handcuffs were secured, the officer took hold of your arm and put you in the back of the car. People were standing around watching as the other officers locked the truck. After they both got in, they drove to the station.
*
"No! No!" You pulled against the two officers who had uncuffed you and were trying to take your fingerprints. "Please, don't. Please!"
"What the hell is going on here?" Sheriff Haskell came out of his office.
"We're trying to take her fingerprints but she's resisting."
"Please, don't. Call John Dutton. He'll tell you I work for him. Please!" You begged with tears streaming down your cheeks.
The sheriff looked at you for a few seconds. "Put her in one of the cells."
"But, we haven't even started with the paperwork or anything yet."
"I'll take care of it." He took your license off the counter. "Just put her in a cell."
"Just call him, please. I'm not lying!"
The officers took you through a door and your pleas died off. They brought you down the hall, putting you in one of the cells that lined the wall.
The door shut behind you with a clang, making you flinch. You went to the bench lining one wall, buried your face in your hands and cried. John would have to tell the sheriff who you were. Nick would come get you because he would see it on your file after the sheriff put your information into the computer. You mourned for the life you had here, for the friends you made, for the Duttons, for Tate. And, for Kayce. Nick would do whatever he wanted to you once he brought you back. But, the thought of never seeing Kayce again made your heart hurt so much that it was hard to breathe. Death would be better than having to live without him and his son.
*
"Where is she?!" Kayce's voice echoed down the hall.
When you heard it, a sob left your lips knowing it was only a matter of days before you would never hear it again.
"Violet!" As soon as the sheriff unlocked your cell, he flung the door open and ran in. You stood up and his arms wrapped around you, crushing you against him. You clung to his shirt as a fresh wave of tears spilled down your face. "I'm here, Letty. It's okay. You're coming home."
"N-Nick- He-he knows- I can't g-go back."
"He doesn't know, baby."
You pushed on his chest so you could look up at him. "He will! My name-he-"
"He won't know you're here because your name is Violet Smith." John finished from where he and the sheriff were standing outside the cell.
"But..." your eyes went to the sheriff.
"I've known John a long time." The sheriff informed. "He filled me in on everything. You're safe here, Violet. And, as far as the two who brought you in, and everyone else working here know, you're hiding from an abusive ex who's a cop, hence the fake ID. That's all they need to know." You looked at him unsure. "Nick and everything about your old life is safe with me. I won't be telling anyone." You gave a small nod of your head and a warm smile formed on his face. "I think it's time to get you out of there and back home."
"Come on, baby." Kayce kissed your hairline before putting his arm around your waist and guiding you out.
"I'm sorry, Vi," John said as he squeezed your shoulder. "I should've known it would be a matter of time before one of the knuckleheads working here stopped you."
"It's not your fault."
He smiled. "Let's get outta here."
*
The second you climbed into bed Kayce pulled you into his arms. You burrowed into him as close as you could get. "I was scared." He admitted into your hair after a couple of silent minutes.
You shifted so you could look up at him. "You were scared? Nothing scares you."
"Losing you scares me." His brown eyes were watery. "The sheriff called Dad while we were working in the barn. All Dad said was it's you and to get in the truck. I think he drove faster than I've ever seen him drive before. If they would have booked you in...I would have been sitting in that cell right next to you." He slid his hand into your hair and rested his forehead against yours. "I can't lose you."
"I can't lose you either." You sniffed, fighting back tears. "I thought I would have to go back."
"Baby, you are never going to lose me. No matter what. And, he is never, ever getting you back. I love you with everything I am, Violet."
"Kayc," tears started trickling over, "I love you too." Your lips met but this one felt different than all of the other ones. This one captured the last lingering thoughts you had of having to leave, of not getting too close. He took them all along with the last brick you had guarding your heart and you gave yourself to him, all of you. This was your home and he was the man you were supposed to be with.

Kayce Dutton x Reader
Words: 4271
Summary: Tired of being holed up on the ranch, the reader begs her husband to calm his paranoid mind for one night so she can go out to the bar with some of the ranch hands. Turns out, his concerns were  founded.
Notes: God I love this man. I honestly have had ideas for Kayce imagines for like a year and now I’m finally finishing them (well, at least this one). I hope to do more with him soon, so fingers crossed for my blonde cowboy husband!
Warnings: Harassment, assault, fighting, wounds-
The cage of his arms was a welcome one. It kept you safe while also reminding you of every moment that led to this one.
In this case, you were reminded of how you got into this position.
Kayce’s beard tickled the back of your neck as his lips trailed down to your shoulder and back up again. You sighed contently and nestled back into his embrace.
“Time to get up,” He mumbled.
You screwed your eyes shut and shook your head.
“Noooo,” You whined. “I’m still asleep.”
His chuckle rumbled against your back. “C’mon.”
Your husband’s hands made their way to your waist and squeezed gently. He flipped you around so you were facing him. You tangled your fingers in his long blonde hair and crashed your lips into his in hopes of dissuading him from leaving the bed. Before you could deepen the kiss anymore, he grabbed your hips tighter and pulled you back.
“Nice try, baby, but we’ve got work to do.”
“Or,” you walked your fingers up his chest. “We could lock the doors and spend the whole day-”
He cut you off with another kiss. Just when you thought you’d won, he sat up, giving you a devilish smirk. His hands latched onto the blankets.
You glowered. “Don’t you dare.”
“Hey, I gave you a chance,” he said, yanking the covers back and subjecting your bare skin to the cold morning air.
“Kayce!” You shrieked, clawing to regain the warmth, but he held them just out of reach, laughing at your demise. “Kayce John Dutton, I’m gonna kill you!”
“You’ve got to catch me first, darlin’.” He took off, taking the blankets and sheets with him.
“Navy SEAL or not, I’m still going to get you!” You shouted after him, grabbing his henley off the floor so you weren’t completely naked as you chased your childish husband around the room. Of course, he wasn’t wearing anything either which made the whole ordeal even more ridiculous.
When you did finally catch him, he’d stopped so suddenly and you were running so fast it knocked both of you to the floor, practically rolling with laughter.
“I… win…” You wheezed in between giggles, laying on top of him.
“Alright, alright.” He brushed your hair out of your face so he could kiss you, but just for a moment. “But we’ve still got to get to work.”
You bit your lip.
“What if I promise to make some time for us tonight, hmm?” He offered. “Dinner, movie, whatever you want.”
You sighed dramatically. “I suppose I can live with that.”
Kayce rolled his eyes, locked his arms around you, and stood. You squealed as he threw you over his shoulder, smacking your backside with a victorious chuckle.
Needless to say, you were definitely awake after that.
-
It was a long day. In a good way. One that felt like you were actually doing something. But still, every move you made ached from the day’s work. You helped out at the ranch because of your past in veterinary school. Sure, you hadn’t been in a clinic in years, but you knew your way around an injured horse enough that John liked having you around. He said it was because you didn’t cost as much. You were pretty sure he liked you more than he let on.
When you saw your husband riding up over the horizon, he didn’t look like he’d fared much better. Dirt caked his forehead, mixed with the sweat on his brow. Not that you minded.
“Hey baby,” he greeted gruffly. Kayce jumped down off his horse and gave you a quick kiss on the cheek. When he pulled away, you notice the downward cast of his gaze and the look of guilt in his eyes.
“Alright,” you sighed. “You’ve got that kicked puppy look now. What is it?”
A smile cracks on his face. “I do not look like a kicked puppy.”
“Sure you do.” You tucked a lock of blonde behind his ear. “With your big eyes and your pouty face.” You hooked your arms behind his neck and pulled him closer. “Are you ready for that date night we talked about?”
The puppy look returned.
“About that, baby,” He blew out a breath and ran his fingers through his hair.
Uh oh.
“You’ve gotta work,” you concluded.
“My dad’s asking me to run to Billing’s to take care of some things-”
You held up a hand to stop him. When it came to John Dutton, you didn’t want any details.
“It’s okay. We can make plans for a different night.” You pulled him into a kiss, smirking against his lips. “But you’ll definitely have to come up with something big and romantic and groveling.”
“I’m sorry,” he said, wrapping his arms around you. “You know I’d pick a night with you over anything, but I don’t think fighting him on this would be a good idea. It’s business and you know how he gets.”
“It’s fine, Kayce, really. I’m sure I’ll find something else to do.”
As if summoned, Ryan and Colby mosied over to the two of you. While Kayce wasn’t close with any of the boys from the bunkhouse, you’d gotten to know them from working on the horses. So even though Kayce tensed protectively, you gave them a bright grin.
“What do you two fuckers want?” You asked.
“We’re going out,” Colby said. “Celebrating Ryan’s birthday if you want to come.” He eyed your husband nervously. “Both of you.”
“We just saw you over here and thought, maybe you’d want to join, but it’s totally fine-” Ryan started to ramble.
You weren’t sure if it was their usual awkwardness or if the boss’s son just made them nervous, but you couldn’t help but laugh.
“Kace can’t, but I could use a night out,” you beamed.
Kayce’s arms tightened around you and his puppy-dog eyes turned intense.
Sensing the change, Ryan and Colby took a step back.
“Cool,” Ryan said. “Meet up in ten.”
The two hurried off and you turned to fierce brown eyes.
“I don’t think it’s a good idea,” Kayce said.
“I wasn’t exactly asking for your permission, honey,” you scoffed. “Besides, like I said, I could use a night out. I can’t even remember the last time I really got away from the ranch for some fun.”
He turned away, jaw tensed, and eyes following the group of men heading back toward the bunkhouse.
“I don’t think any of the ranch hands are stupid enough to hit on me if that’s what you’re worried about,” you teased, trying to lighten his mood.
“It’s not that.” He shook his head, gaze returning to yours. “And it’s not that I don’t trust you, so don’t start thinking that. It’s just… the places these guys go to. Nothing good ever happens.”
“Baby, I think you’re the last person to worry about me getting into trouble. Or anybody, for that matter.”
It was true. You’d married a trouble magnet. Hell, maybe it’s even safer to go to the bar without him, but he definitely did not look in the mood for you to point that out.
“I won’t go if you really don’t want me to,” you said. “I’ll just sit at home…. All alone…. Bored.” You sighed dramatically.
Kayce huffed and kissed your forehead. “Just keep your phone on, okay?”
“Don’t worry. You will always be my phone call if I get arrested.” You gave him a mischievous grin and started off to join the others.
“That’s not funny!” He called after you, chuckling at your excitement and hoping that he wouldn’t regret this.
-
The neon lights bathed your skin in a blue and pink glow. Music blared from the band on the stage and your throat burned pleasantly from the liquor at your lips. You could feel the tension melting off of you from the long, hard day, realizing how much you needed this. It wasn’t that you didn’t like being at the ranch, but sometimes the vastness somehow felt so small. And knowing how much it hurt Kayce to be there, the nightmares you knew he’d had, made you wonder if it was worth it.
“You look like you could use another,” a voice said over the music.
“Hey, Rip.” You turned to face the dark-haired cowboy with a small smile. “Didn’t expect to see you here.”
“Yeah, well,” he shrugged, “every once in a while I let them drag me out to these things.” He ordered himself another beer and you another whiskey. “Not used to seeing you without tall blonde trouble on your arm.”
“Looks like I’m causing enough trouble on my own tonight,” you smirked back. “He’s working.”
Rip nodded, running a hand over his chin. “And he let you come here?”
“He didn’t let me do anything.” You took a drink. “He wasn’t particularly happy about it, but he knows better than to try and tell me what to do.”
“If it were me,” Rip chuckled, “I would have locked you up at home. You’re too nice for a place like this.”
“You rough and tumble cowboys don’t scare me,” you smiled. “I married one, remember?”
“You married one of the good ones.”
“Cheers to that.” You clinked your glass against his and he smiled, still shaking his head as he walked to the other end of the bar to keep an eye on things.
His seat was not empty for long.
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen you ‘round here before.” A muscular arm dressed in a ratty old t-shirt blocked your view of the dance floor and the body attached to it loomed over you like you were a meal. It was a feeling that you were unfortunately familiar with, having grown up around bars like these and, more specifically, their patrons.
“That’s because I haven’t been here,” you said, keeping your voice calm, but cold. The red-haired man beside you did not get the hint. He leaned even closer and you could smell the mix of tobacco and too much beer on his breath as he swayed drunkenly in the seat.
“Well isn’t it my lucky day then?”
You held up your hand, flashing him the wedding ring on your finger.
“Not so much, buddy.” You downed the rest of your drink. “But I’m sure there’s plenty of single women dying to give you a handjob in the bathroom,” you snarked, signaling for the bartender to get you another.
“What if I want you?” He leered.
What started out as annoyance was turning into anger.
“Do I have to spell it out for you?” You stood up in order to get away from his ever-leaning frame. “I’m married, dipshit.”
The drunkard shrugged. “I don’t see anybody here?”
Oh but if Kayce were here…
You could handle yourself without him.
“Why don’t you just back off before that tiny dick of yours gets you into something your tinier brain can’t deal with.”
You turned to walk away.
He grabbed your wrist, twisting it back until it stung.
“What did you say to me you fucking bitch?”
When your fist collided with his chin, it was just the beginning.
Hands grabbed your arms, giving him a clear hit to your stomach which you took with a grunt. You yanked yourself free and found two more men encircling you. Apparently, this shitstain wasn’t alone and all of them were drunk enough to not care that you were half their size and a woman. So much for chivalry.
“Three men versus little old me,” you scoffed. “That hardly seems fair.”
But you weren’t alone either.
Ryan broke through the crowd first, punching the man to your right square between the eyes. Colby was next, fighting some others who’d joined in for the hell of it. You stayed focused on your original creep.
“By the time we’re done, you’re going to be begging me to fuck you into tomorrow,” he sneered.
You responded with another hit to his mouth, feeling a couple of teeth crack against your knuckles.
He swung. You dodged. He picked up a bottle and crashed it against your shoulder, still too drunk to actually aim. You stomped on his foot. He grabbed you by the hair.
Somewhere, a gun went off and everybody screamed.
Red-haired Romeo, however, didn’t seem to care.
By the time Rip had made it over to you, you were being thrown across the bar. You felt the sticky, slick surface slide past your leg before you collided with the back shelves, and dozens of bottles shattered into your back. Your head slammed into the counter as you fell to the whiskey-soaked floor.
Everything was black after that.
-
You got little bits, here and there, trying to force yourself awake, but never able to fight back the darkness.
Rip and Ryan carrying you with your arms over their shoulders, Rip cursing the whole way to the house.
“Her husband is going to have somebody’s hide and it sure as hell isn’t going to be mine.”
A flash of strawberry blonde and the smell of cigarette smoke.
Ryan’s worried eyes as Rip dragged him away.
It was until the alcohol-dipped rag touched your cuts that you were fully awake. You grimaced, the sharp sting shooting up your back. You gripped the arm of the couch, face down in a pillow.
“Oh good, you’re awake,” Beth snarked. “It’d be a shame to miss this fun.” She pulled a piece of glass out of your side and you clenched your jaw. “That looks like it hurts.”
“Is there still bourbon down here?” You asked.
She laughed, shaking her head. “That’s what got you into this mess, sweetheart. And when my brother makes a list tonight, I’m not putting myself on it.”
She plucked another shard. It seemed every muscle in your back spasmed with every move she made, taking out class and swiping at the blood pooling on your skin. Not to mention the pounding in your head, hair matted with gore. You were grateful it was her, though. At least she’d get it done quick, without any pitying or panic.
Meanwhile, outside was an almost as pitiful sight. Rip leaned against the barn, glaring down the other men who nursed their injuries. Ryan’s eye was already starting to swell and Colby rubbed his aching jaw. Even Lloyd looked worse for wear.
“You’re lucky I don’t fire every one of you,” Rip glowered.
“In our defense, we were trying to stop the fight,” Ryan said, but quickly regretted it.
Rip stepped toward him. “You want another black eye?”
All eyes, however, glanced behind Rip, a pair of headlights growing nearer and nearer.
“Oh shit,” Colby muttered. “I thought he was going to Billings.”
Rip ran a hand down his face, trying to contain his frustration. Could anything else go wrong?
“Apparently not.”
Kayce got out of the truck.
At first, he thought they’d cut the party short and came back to the ranch, but as he got closer, he saw the specks of blood on their shirts and the color of forming bruises.
“What the hell happened?”
Rip sighed. “What does it look like?”
Kayce’s burning gaze turned to him, the question going unsaid, but very much present in his eyes. Rip held up a hand, keeping his voice level to not poke the bear any further.
“She’s inside. Beth’s with her.”
Kayce didn’t waste any more time, dark eyes flashing as he whipped around, sprinting up to the house.
“Y/N!” He screamed. “Y/N!”
Beth rolled her eyes. “Do you want to wake up all of Montana? We’re in here.”
A door opened upstairs. John was awake.
“What’s going on?”
You buried your face in the pillow.
Oh. God.
Kayce stormed into the living room at the same time his father appeared in the loft.
“I’m sorry for getting blood on your couch,” you said, gritting your teeth as Beth cleaned another gaping cut. Your bare chest stuck to the leather uncomfortably as you shifted to get a look at your father-in-law, avoiding your husband in the doorway.
“Is she going to be okay?” John called down.
“She won’t be able to lie on her back for a while.” Beth looked up at your panicked husband with a smirk. “But hey, save a horse, ride a cowboy, right?”
“Beth,” you groaned.
Kayce’s expression darkened.
Beth placed the rag back in the bowl and stood. “That’s my cue.” She waved up at John. “Just another day in the Dutton house, daddy.”
John sighed, muttering as he went back down the hall. “I don’t want to know.”
Kayce was at your side in seconds, dark eyes widening at the sight of your bloodied back and bruised face. Guilt and worry took over his features. It was worse than he thought. There were still a few shards of glass stuck in your flesh and some of the cuts looked like they went pretty deep. Your shoulder was a web of scratches with a bloody point of impact in the middle. The back and side of your head were covered with that dreaded red, more glass stuck in your hair.
You tried to crack a smile.
“You should see the other guy.”
“Baby…” he breathed shakily, a trembling hand against your cheek. “What happened?” Before you could answer, another, angrier question boiled in his chest. “Who did this to you?”
“I don’t know.”
He opened his mouth, but you stopped him.
“I’m serious. I didn’t exactly ask for contact information when I was swinging at him.”
Kayce nodded, body rigid with rage as he picked up the rag and started tending to your wounds with a much gentler hand than his sister’s.
“So a man attacked you?” His voice was calm which made you even more nervous. He only sounded like that when he wanted to kill something. Or someone.
“Well, I wasn’t tossed over a bar by Montana Barbie,” you snarked.
Your humor hid your humiliation but only made his frustration worse. His hand tensed roughly against your skin. You bit your lip to keep from wincing.
“Sorry,” he muttered. Keeping his movements slow and soft, he got the rest of the glass out and cleaned up most of the blood, though some of the cuts would definitely need stitches.
“And technically, no,” you said. “I started the fight. He was just annoying.”
You tried to push yourself up, crying out at the pain in your shoulder. Kayce gently urged you back down, repositioning the pillow so you could look at him more comfortably.
“It doesn’t matter,” he growled. “Anybody who does this to you-”
“Have probably already been punished by Rip.” You used your strength to reach a hand to tuck his blonde hair behind his ear. “I’m okay, Kace.”
He motioned to the liquor store sliced into your back. “Not from where I’m sitting, sweetheart. You know, one of those bottles could have paralyzed you, or-or severed an artery. You would have bled out on a dirty bar floor and I wouldn’t have been able to do anything about it.”
His voice cracked and you finally let your cocky facade fall.
“I’m sorry, baby,” you cried. “But you can’t protect me forever. I can handle myself.”
“Tonight’s not real good proof of that,” he said, a small smile teasing his lips. “Only you could get into this much trouble going out for drinks.”
“Hypocrite.”
He started bandaging you up as best he could to get you ready to go to the hospital.
“I don’t need to go anywhere,” you protested as he helped you up.
“You just had your head smashed against I don’t want to know how many surfaces. Rip said you were out for a couple of hours, now we should have had you at the hospital sooner,” Kayce said. “I’m not messin’ around.”
Sure enough, when you did see the doctor, they confirmed that you had a concussion. A bad one. Enough to make them want to keep you overnight to observe, as well as stitch up your back. When they asked what happened, you told them you fell.
“You… fell…” The doctor eyed you, then looked at Kayce.
You grabbed the woman’s arm, directing her suspicious gaze back at you. The last thing Kayce needed was somebody getting the wrong idea and thinking this was his fault.
“Through a glass table, from which I might have died if my husband hadn’t come home early so you keep your focus on me, okay?” You snapped.
Kayce chuckled. “Easy, baby. We’re not being interrogated.”
“I’m responsible for what happened. I don’t want her thinking anything different,” you said. “Tonight was my fault.”
“No,” he sighed. “It wasn’t.”
He should have been there. He didn’t drink, so he would have been able to see those creeps coming a mile off. Better yet, he should have stayed home, stayed with you like he said he was going to. Then none of this wouldn’t have happened.
“Hey,” you said, taking his hand. “Don’t start.”
“I didn’t say anything.”
You gave him a knowing smile. “You don’t have to.”
He brought your hand up to his lips and held it for the rest of the night.
-
Three Weeks Later
The wind whistled around you and for the first time in almost a month, you felt like you could really breathe. Adjusting the reins in your hand, your golden-brown quarter horse turned, facing you back toward the ranch, miles, and miles of beautiful country all around you. In the distance, you saw a dark hat appear out of the stables and heard your name echo across the field.
You pet your horse's neck, laughing. “I think we’re in trouble.”
With the sunset overhead, you rode back, your husband’s disapproving frown becoming clearer and clearer.
“What the hell are you doing?” He asked. You dismounted and led your horse to the barn. “You just got cleared by the doctor. Are you trying to get another concussion?”
“I know how to ride a horse without falling off, baby.” You kissed him as you went by. “Besides, it’s therapeutic. See, I feel better already.”
Kayce watched you go by, eyes lingering on your back, imagining the angry red scabs and scratches that crisscrossed your skin. He thought about how you tried not to wince when he touched you or that you’d have to lean on him after standing, too dizzy to see straight.
He should have been there.
“Morning, Rip,” you said, seeing the mountain of a man in the other doorway. He tilted his hat at you in greeting, glancing over at your husband for a moment before carrying on by. Something you’d watched that morning clicked in your mind. “I actually wanted to talk to the two of you about something.”
Rip halted and turned around.
“I saw on the news this morning that they found the remains of three hikers in the park last night,” you said, suspicious eyes switching between the two of them. “Three men. You two wouldn’t happen to know anything about that, would you?”
Kayce’s brows furrowed. Rip’s expression didn’t change. You put your hands on your hips and narrowed your eyes.
“Because I can fight my own fights. I don’t need either of you getting yourselves into trouble.” You shot your husband a look that said ‘especially you.’ It seemed like trouble was both of your middle names sometimes.
But he just shrugged. “I don’t know what you’re talking about, baby.” Kayce turned to the other cowboy. “Rip?”
A silence fell over the barn, heavy with tension and an unspoken truth.
“It’s the first I’m hearing of it,” Rip said, cool blue eyes watching you. “They probably poked a bear they shouldn’t have.” With that, he left the two of you, and Kayce couldn’t help but feel grateful. As much as he would have wanted to deal with them himself, he was glad those bastards got what they deserved.
You unstrapped the saddle and started to lift it off.
“I got it,” Kayce said, grabbing the heavy leather for you and the two of you finished putting everything away. But that heavy silence was still there.
Your hand slipped into his, tugging slightly to make him look at you.
“Kayce,” you started softly, those big brown eyes making you melt just like they always did, but in them, you could see the guilt he’d been carrying for the past three weeks. “What happened was not your fault. It just… happened.” You laid a hand on his cheek. “Even you can’t stop the world from happening. And you can’t stop some men from being drunk bastards who can’t throw a decent punch.”
His fingers traced the forming scars on your shoulder. “I can try,” he whispered.
You brought his gaze back to yours and pulled him in for a kiss that said everything you both needed it to. When you pulled away, you smiled teasingly.
“So enough of the puppy look.”
Kayce rolled his eyes. “Not this again.”
“I’m serious!” You giggled. “It’s time to, I don’t know, have a little fun again. I’m not going to break.”
Ever the fighter, he thought, bringing you in for another kiss.
You tugged on his hand again, leading him out of the barn. The first stars were making their appearance over the incredible landscape you called home.
“Besides,” you said, leading him back toward the house. “You still owe me a date night.”
Kayce chuckled, wrapping an arm around your waist with a smirk that matched your own.
“Yes ma’am.”

Kayce Dutton x f!reader
Tumblr media
Summary: When a downtrodden Kayce arrives on your doorstep at nearly midnight on New Year’s Eve and shares unexpected news, reigning in the feelings you’ve harbored for him for years becomes exceedingly difficult.
Word Count: 3.1k
Rating: 18+ EXPLICIT
Prompt: New Year's Eve kiss (dedicated to @villainvindicator 💖)
Content: NSFW, smut, fluff, friends to lovers, fingering, unprotected p in v (very brief mention of domestic abuse without details)
DECK THE HALLS MASTERLIST
You’re nearly on the cusp of sleep when the sound of tires crunching along your gravel driveway rouses you from where you’re curled up on the couch. Stealing a glance at the clock on the wall, and you peer out the blinds, eyes widening a fraction when you spot a familiar red and white pick up truck pulling up beside your car.
The throw blanket pooled around your waist slips to the floor when you stand, striding across the room and opening your front door to find none other than Kayce Dutton standing there with his fist raised, on the verge of knocking. He lets his arm drop back down to his side.
“Well this is a surprise. I haven’t heard from you in months, Kayce. To what do I owe the pleasure?” you ask him casually as you step aside, gesturing for him to come in.
There’s no real weight to your words—you’re well aware Kayce has his work cut out for him between his own family baggage, on top of being a husband and a father. And you’ve been friends long enough that the lapse in time doesn’t make a difference, the two of you always find your way back to each other one way or another. But you can’t help but wonder what’s brought him to your doorstep this late on New Year’s Eve, of all nights.
He steps inside and takes off his hat, placing it on the hook beside the door, and it’s only then that you catch the downtrodden expression on his face that had been obscured by the shadows on your front porch. He reaches up, running a hand through his hair, the gesture drawing further attention to the prominent dark circles under his eyes.
“Sorry, I probably should’ve called, huh? I wasn’t thinkin’. Was just out for a drive and thought I’d stop in, I guess. I can go if you’re busy, though…” he trails off, hands tucked away in the pockets of his jacket.
Gesturing toward your faded t-shirt, sleep shorts, and the thick wool socks on your feet, you shake your head with a rueful smile. “If falling asleep on the couch watching a bad movie counts as busy, you’re more than welcome to interrupt.”
The corner of his mouth quirks upward ever so slightly. “No New Year’s party for you?”
You snort, reaching out to take his jacket from him before he begins to take off his boots. “Who said this isn’t a party?”
Kayce chuckles, and it’s a rich, pleasant sound that flutters down your spine, settling deep in your gut with a warmth that leaves your insides tingling. You’re well past denying the effect he has on you.
He follows you into the living room, settling down beside you on the couch as you tuck your legs up under your body. Turning down the volume on the television, you glance over at him to find a far off look in his eyes as he glances around the room. His gaze slows when it begins to sweep over the collection of framed photographs adorning your mantle.
“Did you break up with Travis?”
You try not to look too far into the way he’d quickly picked up on the purge of any and all photographs including your boyfriend of three years, which had been strewn about the room up until two months ago.
“Back in October.”
He furrows his brows. “You didn’t tell me. I’m sorry to hear that.”
You laugh, a disbelieving look on your face. “No you’re not. He was an asshole.”
He trails a finger over a stray thread hanging from the edge of the knitted blanket draped over the back of the back of the couch. “Yeah, I’m really not. Well what happened?”
“We got into it again over how he wanted to move to Seattle, but as you know, I’ll sell my parents’ farm over my dead body. He was drunk though, and he got a little physical…” you trail off, stomach churning at the memory.
Kayce freezes, posture stiffening, and he growls, “Where the fuck is he?”
You reach out, placing a hand on his knee and squeezing. “I’m fine, Kayce. I promise. It’s handled, and he’s long gone now.”
He runs a hand over his beard. “Why didn’t you call me?”
Choosing your next words carefully, you reply, “You…had a lot going on with Monica, I didn’t want to bother you.”
“Bother me?” Kayce parrots, dumbfounded. “You know I’d drop everything for you, especially if it meant finally having an excuse to kick his stupid ass.”
The conviction in his words makes your chest ache, because you know he means it. You shake your head, smiling weakly. “You were just counting down the days till you’d finally have a chance to do that, huh?”
He sighs, glancing up at the ceiling for a moment. You know he fucking hated Travis. “Yep.”
In an attempt to change the subject, you segue, “So now that we’re caught up on my life’s current events, care to tell me why you’re really here?”
He bites his lip. “Can’t a guy just stop in and visit?”
You offer him an unimpressed look. “At almost midnight on New Year’s Eve?”
Covering his mouth with his fingers, he takes a deep breath. It’s then that you notice the ring finger on his left hand is noticeably bare, and you’re almost ashamed of the feeling that flares within you at the sight. He catches the way your gaze flicks to the spot, and he leans backward heavily.
“I can’t do this anymore with Monica. I’m so goddamn tired.”
“Are you…” you begin to ask.
“Done? Yeah. She can’t make up her damn mind, and she keeps draggin’ me along. So I decided for her,” he sighs, fingers reaching out to twist the ring that’s no longer on his finger. “She has Tate tonight, and I didn’t know what to do with myself. I hopped in my truck and kind of just ended up coming here on instinct, I guess.”
In that moment, you know you’re both thinking back to all the times you rang in the new year together as teenagers, dashing across your parents’ backyard with sparklers in your hands while you waited for the countdown on the small portable radio sitting perched on the stairs to the back porch.
“I’m sorry. You know that you’re always welcome here,” you finally say after a few beats of silence.
“‘m sorry I haven’t been around much lately. I miss you,” he laments.
“I missed you, too, Kayce.”
Kayce goes quiet again for a moment, until he eventually mumbles, “I just…don’t understand why I ain’t good enough.” He scratches the back of his head, letting out a huff of air. “I mean, I guess I know why—I’ve got too much fuckin’ baggage.”
Something in your chest clenches at the painful resignation in his voice, the undertone of self-loathing that lingers in his words. You’ve spent years biting your tongue throughout Kayce’s struggles in his marriage, but now, you can’t be bothered to hold them back.
“You’re not the problem Kayce, you never were. You just love her too much to see that.”
A reluctant smile tugs at his lips as he echoes your sentiment. “You’ve been counting down the days till you could say that, huh?”
Counting down is a goddamn understatement.
“You have such a big heart. You deserve better,” you tell him.
His expression softens minutely, and he considers your words, not breaking eye contact with you when he finally responds. “I think I loved the idea of her and what we had.”
The sadness in Kayce’s tone makes you want to crawl across the cushions toward him, to show him what exactly you think he deserves. But it’s certainly not the time. And it’s not your damn place, either. It never has been.
It never will be.
No matter how badly you may want it to.
Perhaps, if you’d been brave enough to tell him how you felt when you were younger, the unrequited, awkward feelings would have faded with time—something to be blamed on teenage hormones and the fleeting crushes they incite, ones that burn hard and fast, disintegrating quickly like a shooting star.
If you told him now, there’d be no turning back. No shelter to weather the irrevocable damage it would do to your friendship, the devastating chasm it would split open between the two of you.
Because the way you feel about Kayce Dutton is anything but fleeting.
Your phone screen lights up beside you, and you glance down to check the time. Standing up, you gesture for Kayce to follow you into the kitchen. You hop up onto the counter, reaching over to turn on the radio that’s mounted to the bottom of one of the cabinets and fiddling with the dial until the station you’re searching for comes in.
“For old time’s sake,” you grin as an announcer on the radio announces that it’s three minutes to midnight.
Kayce mirrors your expression with a genuine smile of his own, and you’re both quiet as you listen, the only other sound coming from your socked feet bumping into the cabinet below as you mindlessly swing your legs. With your gaze trained on the green digits lit up across the front of the radio, 11:59, you don’t realize that Kayce’s moved until you feel something bump into your knees.
He stands in front of you, the blue denim of his jeans brushing against your bare knees, and you go still, heels pressed firmly against the handle of the cabinet. You can hardly hear the sound of the 10-second countdown beginning over the blood rushing in your ears when he leans in, pressing his lips to your cheek.
“For old time’s sake,” he repeats, laughing weakly and rocking back slightly on his heels as he pulls away. It’s a friendly kiss, you tell yourself, mirroring the ones from your childhood.
5…4…3…
You stare at him, lips parted slightly, fingers tightly gripping the edges of the counter. He takes a deep breath, one hand flexing at his side.
2…
“Kayce,” you breathe out, hardly above a whisper.
The sounds of celebration begin to erupt from the radio’s crackling speakers, and he surges forward, cupping your face in both of his hands, his lips crashing into yours.
Kayce’s mouth moves against your own with purpose as he slots himself between your legs, one hand shifting to cup the back of your head as he strokes the curve of your jaw with the thumb of his other. The scrape of his facial hair against your skin while he kisses you is a welcome sensation, one that you’ve imagined time and time again. You reach up, running a hand through his hair, and a soft sound leaves his mouth as his hand drops down to rest against your lower back, pulling you against his solid body.
His fingertips brush against your skin where your shirt has ridden up, and you shiver at the sensation—the contrast between the feeling of his hands, rough from years of working the farm, and the gentle way he touches you with them. You cross your ankles behind Kayce, pulling him even closer, and his hand trails along your back to firmly grip at your side. His other hand slides across the top of your thigh, and he hooks it under your knee, lifting your leg.
You scoot closer to the edge of the counter and spread your legs wider for him, and heat spreads under your skin at the feeling of his erection straining at the front of his jeans, now pressed against your mound.
Kayce’s lips slow down, pausing in their endeavor to further consume your mouth in the wildfire they’ve started. He presses another kiss to your bottom lip before leaning his forehead against yours, and you lay a hand against his chest, fingertips curling into the pocket at the front of his flannel shirt as his heart beats wildly beneath your palm; the erratic rhythm matches your own.
Breathing hard, his voice is rough when he speaks, “Sorry.”
You take one of his hands into your own, lacing your fingers together, a weak laugh escaping your lips. “That’s definitely not something you need to say sorry for.”
Reaching up, you thread your fingers into the hair at the back of his head and press your body into the warmth of his again. He groans, grasping the side of your thigh.
“Tell me what you want then,” he drawls, and fire licks in the pit of your belly as his lips ghost over yours.
“You, Kayce. It’s always been you,” you murmur, kissing the corner of his mouth.
There’s a hitch in his breath, and his hand slides up to grasp your hip, fingers skirting underneath your shirt. There’s a shift in the air between you as he huskily replies, “Wish I’d known that sooner.”
You pull away just enough to look at him, his brown eyes alight with emotion. “Well, I’m right here, and I’m not going anywhere.”
He chases after your lips again, and there’s urgency in the way his mouth seeks out yours in a bruising, all-consuming kiss that finds you arching your back into his scorching touch. You tighten your legs around Kayce, a whine crawling up your throat as the seam of his jeans presses firmly against the thin material of your shorts, rubbing against your hot center. You rock your hips into him, and Kayce moans, so you do it again, but harder.
“Fuck,” he rasps.
You can tell he’s holding himself back, his kisses growing sloppy as his fingers dig into your skin.
“Touch me, Kayce,” you plead.
He doesn’t hesitate, hands sliding up under your shirt, an appreciative sound leaving him when his palms make contact with your bare breasts. He licks his way into your mouth as he teases your pebbled nipples, relishing in the breathy noises you offer him in return. You reach down, shrugging off your shirt, and Kayce’s lips blaze a hot trail down the side of your neck. He drags his mouth down the center of your chest, palming your breasts in his hands while lavishing them with the wet heat of his mouth.
Nerves on fire, you reach out, fumbling with the buttons of his flannel, and he pauses to help you, tugging it off along with his black t-shirt underneath. Your hands skate across his chest, and he closes his eyes as you press a tender kiss to the brand seared into his skin before letting your lips trail toward his collarbone.
Kayce’s fingers caress the inside of your legs, climbing higher toward the apex of your thighs. He slides his hand inside the loose material of your shorts, and you bite down on his skin as he runs a finger over your clothed cunt.
“What about here?” he whispers against the shell of your ear, nipping at your earlobe.
“Please.”
Kayce hooks a finger in your panties, pulling them aside, and a groan rumbles in his chest when he swipes two digits through your dripping folds. He uses his other hand to tilt your chin, kissing you hard as he slips his middle finger into your soaked entrance.
You moan into the kiss, bucking your hips toward his touch, and he sounds more than a little wrecked as he mutters, “Christ, you’re so fuckin’ wet.”
He inserts another finger and slowly begins to pump them both in and out of you while you reach out, hands quickly working their way past his belt to free his throbbing cock from the confines of his jeans. Kayce takes your bottom lip between his teeth and bites down as you wrap your hand around his length and stroke it, drawing a wanton cry from your mouth as he crooks his fingers inside of you in turn.
You lift your feet up, heels resting against the lip of the countertop, and Kayce takes hold of his shaft, precum leaking from the tip. He swipes the head through your slick folds, notching it at your entrance, and you wrap your legs around his waist as he slowly begins to sink into you.
His mouth hovers over yours, both of you breathing heavily as his cock is steadily engulfed within the tight, wet heat of your cunt. When he eventually bottoms out, neither of you moves for a few moments, content to revel in the feeling of the way he feels nestled deep inside of you, stretching you open.
When Kayce finally begins to shift, your body ignites with searing pleasure at the delicious drag of his cock through your narrow channel, his name falling from your lips repeatedly as he fervently kisses your neck while one hand toys with your nipples. Tension coils tighter and tighter in your gut with every thrust, your folds squelching wetly each time his cock disappears into your body. He laps a broad stroke with his tongue just underneath the hinge of your jaw, teeth grazing your skin as your pussy clenches down on him.
The ache between your thighs spreads rapidly through your limbs, and you chase after Kayce’s lips for a needy, desperate kiss as you whine, “Kayce, I’m gonna—”
He grasps the side of your neck, his free hand drifting between your bodies, fingers seeking out the sensitive bundle of nerves between your legs.
“Come for me,” he murmurs before kissing you deeply, rubbing circles into your swollen clit.
The pressure building inside of you explodes, and Kayce swallows down the strangled noises that pour out of you as you shudder, coming entirely undone with the force of your climax. He fucks you through each electric wave of pleasure, your limbs trembling as his cock continues to stroke your sensitive inner walls.
Your fingers dig into Kayce’s back while his hips begin to stutter, and he moans your name when he plunges inside of you one last time before pulling out, stroking himself as ropes of cum spill from his cock and onto the kitchen floor below.
As the last of his seed drips out, you reach out, tugging Kayce back into your arms, bringing your lips to his. You can feel him smile against your mouth, and he breaks the kiss, peppering more of them across the planes of your face.
“Will you stay tonight?” you ask him quietly, your heartbeat quickening at the uncertainty of what his answer may be.
Kayce grasps the underside of your thighs, prompting you to wrap your legs around him again as your arms encircle his neck, and he lifts you up off of the counter.
Nose brushing against yours affectionately, he murmurs as he makes his way toward the stairs that lead to your bedroom, “I’ll stay as long as you’ll have me.”
