Bokumachi Drabbles pt.1

Not a Ripple update, but I’m doing Bokumachi drabbles to beat back the writer’s block, and boy are they gems.

Consistency was never their forte, but when it came down to keeping their illicit tryst (Yashiro’s words, not mine), a secret, they would quite literally leap out buildings to defend it to the death. Satoru and Yashiro, from the outside looking in, were an inseparable pair of friends within a larger friend group. Kayo, Hiromi, Kenya, Aya, Osamu, and Kazu had known them since grade school. It wouldn’t be ridiculous to say that Satoru and Yashiro gravitated towards groups that thrived off of trouble. If the “trouble” involved embarrassing and shaming each other until they turned beet red, all the more reason. 

Let’s see, from the beginning then: Satoru and Yashiro grew up as next door neighbors, soon next door friends, then just friends, and then best friends. Kenya can attest to this; he was green with envy the moment Yashiro walked into the picture. At first, their world was small and involved bug catching in the summers, book trades (to be fair, Satoru traded more manga and comic books than novels, but Yashiro didn’t mind), and sleepovers that lasted until the early morning. Childhood sentiment was shaken off somewhere along the way. This isn’t to be mistaken with being abandoned completely, but rather it became a stepladder to the inevitable. The inevitable was that day, the very last day of 8th grade. Yashiro, second button of his uniform in hand, chose the perfect spot for a confession; springtime underneath a cherry blossom tree, and the sky was a clear blue with no clouds in sight. The wind weaved in and out of Satoru’s hair, lifting his hair like sapphire strands; as always, Yashiro had a flair for the flamboyant and romantic. “I love you, Satoru. I’m sorry - sorry that I kept it a secret for this long! I want-want-WANT to-... to…” According to Satoru, Yashiro fainted on his feet that day. His dead eyes, parted lips, wrinkled nose bridge were a cry for help. After five minutes of waiting, Satoru wrestled the button out of Yashiro’s fist. “No, what are you-- SATORU, LET ME FINISH.” Satoru didn’t understand at first, his head denser than a cinder block, but as he watched this piece of cheap brass roll around in his hand, petals fluttering against his fingers, it dawned on him. “You know, it’s funny. I thought I was the only one for awhile. You seemed so put together, so smart, so fancy and stuff, like you were gonna marry a princess or prince.” That day was a mixed bag of out of character interactions, for Yashiro grabbed Satoru by the collar 

And so, Satoru would pack a lunch, bring it to the back of their high school where an old tree firmly planted its roots for decades, and “coincidentally” Yashiro would have the same idea. At first, they’d go through the effort to make casual conversation, get the “how are you’s”, “how’s class,” and “,what did you pack for lunch?”, out of the way. No matter how mundane of a conclusion their conversation would reach, their fingers found a way to meet in the middle. If luck would have it, they’d squeeze out seconds in an empty classroom afterschool. Their lips would catch up later, but only if Kenya didn’t come rushing in out of nowhere like an opportunistic cat. 

“Satoru!” Out of breath, as usual. Yashiro glared down at their hands before turning around with a honeyed smile. 

“Oh Kenya, hi!” He darted back to Satoru. “Make him leave, please. I can’t do it.” 

Satoru whispered back. “Me? Make Kenya go away? Do you know something I don’t--Ow!!” Yashiro pinched down on Satoru’s hand while maintaining a perfect smile. 

“Hey Yashiro, mind if I cut your date short?” Kenya straightened out his blazer, well put together as always with brown eyes that judged with no reprieve. 

Their minds, joined by a single conga line of brain cells, collapsed in the middle; a mental implosion of nuclear scale.

“What?” Yashiro and Satoru became one unit, stupid and gawkish as they stared up at Kenya. “What do you mean?” 

“What do you me-- You’re so clueless. Satoru, I’d expect, but really Yashiro?” Kenya hit Satoru with his book bag.  Satoru, panicked with an escalating heart rate, buried his face against his hands. Yashiro’s hands were making incomprehensible flourishes, his lips breaking into nervous smiles. 

“Kenya, we - I don’t understand where this is coming from. I can assure you-” Satoru hid his face against Yashiro’s shoulder. His voice was muffled against Yashiro’s sleeve. 

“Yas-iro, ‘re ‘aught. ‘Ust give it up.” 

Yashiro dropped his head and leaned into Satoru. “You’re right… you’re right..” 

Kenya flashed a prideful smile, crossing his arms as he looked down from his own, impossibly high pedestal. “Yeah, throw in the towel. Everybody knows. I don’t know why you decided to keep it a secret.” 

Satoru and Yashiro leapt to their feet, perfectly on cue. “Who knows???? Who knows????” With each hand, they shook Kenya by the collar, wrinkling his stark straight dress shirt. Kenya, cool as always, looked down with empty eyes. 

“Everyone. E-v-e-r-y-o-n-e.”

name meanings

kanji breakdowns. warning: im chinese, not japanese, so please correct me if i’m wrong!

yashiro (bc he has the most names)

御子原  学 : mi ko hara   gaku

the “mi” means “imperial,” or “to govern,” the “ko” means “child” (but is often sort of just sometimes put in for flavor) and the “hara” means “pain, field, wilderness”. so altogether, a prince’s meadow - i’m more inclined to go with this one because all of yashiro’s last names besides the fake one are references to locations. His first name, “gaku,” means “study,” so he’s basically named after being “studious.” this kanji doesn’t change the entire way through, but the pronunciation changes later on

八代  学 : yashi ro   gaku

“yashiro” means “eight generations/eras/epochs” (with the yashi being eight). however, it’s a slightly odd kanji spelling for this pronunciation, as “yashiro” is homophonous with 社 , meaning “shrine.” However, eight is a significant number in buddhism (see: eightfold path, eight hot hells, eight cold hells).

西園  学 : nishi zono   manabu

fist name pronunciation change, but kanji stays the same - last name is “nishi” for “west,” and “zono” for “garden.” the “west garden” being referred to is the western paradise in buddhist tradition. this is the same paradise as the 極楽 (gokuraku) referenced in yashiro’s version of the spider’s thread.

古賀 : ko ga

the fake last name yashiro uses during the hospital trip to the park. “ko” as in “old, nostalgic” and “ga” as in “joy, congratulations.” so hes literally congratulating satoru and reminiscing on the joy satoru brought him. thanks yashiro

i want to say right now that mikohara, yashiro, and nishizono together seem to imply the buddha’s path to enlightenment - a “child imperial” (so, like, a prince) who then studies the “eight” of something and reaches the “western paradise” - which is pretty funny because yashiro has always compared himself to kandata, the sinner

the fujinumas

藤沼  悟 : fuji numa   satoru

“fuji” as in “wisteria,” “numa” as in “pond.” wisterias were significant to buddhist followers bc amida buddha is said to approach the recently deceased on a purple cloud in order to take them to the pure land/western paradise. “satoru” literally means “enlightenment”

藤沼  佐知子 : fuji numa   sa chi ko

wisterias are also long-lived and associated with immortality, and sachiko’s seemingly eternal youth is often commented on. “sa” meaning “to help,” “chi” meaning “to know,” “ko” as a common feminine suffix to names. the first names in erased are always like so blatantly on the nose its kind of embarrassing, so sachiko literally means “to help to know”

片桐  愛梨 : kata giri    ai ri

“kata” as in “leaf,” “giri” as in “paulownia,” “ai” as in “love,” and “ri” as in “pear tree,” but also as part of 阿闍梨 , “high monk.” paulownia is associated with dowries and weddings, and airi is like...the girl the author intended to be the love interest so ?

小林  賢也 : ko bayashi   ken ya

“ko” as in “small,” “bayashi” as in “grove, forest,” “ken” as in “wisdom,” “ya” as in “to be”. so, “to be wise.” again, on the nose.

雛月 加代 : hina dzuki   ka yo

“hina” as in “chick,” but also often meaning “young” (as in 雛僧 , “young priest”), “zuki” as in “moon,” “ka” as in “to add, increase” and “yo” (same as the “ro” in yashiro) as in “generations, ages, passage of time, change”. so, “young moon” for the last name, but “to add a generation/change” (ie, surviving, giving birth)

雛月  明美: hina dzuki    ake mi

“akemi” as in “unspoilt, beautiful,” which is funny in a sad sort of way

杉田 広美 : sugi ta   hiro mi

“sugi” as in “cypress,” “ta” as in “field, paddy,” “hiro” as in “wide, spacious,” and “mi” as in “beautiful.” i don’t think there’s any real meaning to the cypress bit but like, name the kid whose main character trait is “killed bc he looks pretty like a girl” “pretty” haha. bokumachi’s on-the-nose naming scheme strikes again

杉田  未来 : sugi ta mi rai

“mirai” literally means “future” so like, haha, symbolism.

中西 彩 : naka nishi   aya

“naka” as in “middle,” “nishi” as in “west,” “aya” as in “to color, add flair”. i guess she’s in the middle of yashiro’s plans?

澤田 真: sawa da   makoto

“sawa” as in “swamp,” “da” as in “field, paddy,” “makoto” as in “truth, reality.” for the journalist seeking the truth, fitting name

白鳥 潤: shira tori   jun

“shiratori” as in “swan,” “jun” as in “to receive benefits”. this one might be kind of a reach but there’s a famous buddhist story where prince siddhartha (who later becomes the OG buddha) saves a swan his cousin shoots. with satoru’s ties to enlightenment and the buddha (technically, a different buddha, but also technically they’re all the same buddha) idk if it’s an intentional reference to this story or not, but it could very well be

修 : osamu

“to master,” but also probably more relevant to the story, “to repair a fault one has caused”

カズ : kazu

uhh i can’t find the actual kanji for his name but it looks like the most common kanji with this pronunciation seems to be “number”

Bokumachi cast as RPG (or FE) characters?

Ohhhh you know, there’s actually some great fanart of the Bokumachi characters as RPG characters! It’s by moyashinico on Twitter! I really like the roles: Satoru as a young adventurer, Kenya as a thief-like character, mage Hiromi, merchant-y Osamu, brawler Kazu. Then sage Yashiro who I like to imagine is secretly a necromancer or something and Kayo appears to be a princess/priestess character? Maybe a cleric?

As for FE – oh man Awakening AU with Lucina!Satoru and Chrom!Sachiko? Satoru going back through time, cold and distant, to try to save his world and his mother’s life. All the kid characters are the grown up “children” – Kenya, Kayo, Hiromi – fighting alongside young versions of Sachiko, Sawada, Yashiro and Kenya’s father? 

Just. Imagine this scene with Satoru and Sachiko and try not to feel something. (ಥ﹏ಥ) “… my little boy’s all grown up already.”

Just spent the whole evening binge-watching the first six episodes of the Bokumachi dub and wow that was waaaay better than I was expecting.

I wasn’t sure about Satoru’s adult voice from the trailer, but it’s super spot-on. He has the perfect dry, disillusioned 29-year-old voice. Plus, he lands the inner monologues super well. Including the funnier moments. 

Satoru’s younger voice is also amazing and really sounds like a child. I find a lot of “young boy” voices sometimes come across sounding too feminine (which makes sense, since the VAs tend to be female) but that’s not the case here.

Kayo is great, especially the parts where she’s more emotional. When she’s melancholy or happy, it really gets across.

Kenya is also super good! He comes across as “mature” while still having a voice that’s conceivably young. I uploaded a clip of it to Twitter as well, and you can give it a listen here.

I like Airi’s voice a lot! I was a bit worried that it was a little too... high-pitched at first from the trailer, but she totally just sounds like a normal teenaged girl. When she punched out Takahashi, her “I trusted you!” lines sounded really great.

We only have peppy-happy-teacher Yashiro so far and a short scene with Nishizono, but I like what I’m hearing. Again, I uploaded a bit to Twitter if you want to listen. The make-or-break will come later during the reveal of course, but I’m excited to give it a hear when Vol. 2 comes out!

There’s some really smart localizations. For example, translating Satoru’s “yokai” to “witch,” or Airi commenting on how Satoru has a “cocoon” instead of a “film.”

There’s something about the funny moments that are... funnier? I think this might just be because I’m now watching in my native language, but the comedic timing in some scenes seem to hit home more than they did in Japanese.

They’re also not afraid to swear, which is great and makes the whole thing sound much more natural. When Kayo’s mother is talking to Satoru about safety, his inner monologue is: “Don’t try to pull that on me, bitch!” or something along those lines. Likewise when Sachiko said she would give Satoru money if it was a date he goes: “Woah shit for real?!” which is just. So funny. Sawada even says “son of a bitch” when referring to the killer, which was oddly satisfying. If we hear Kenya swear in the dub I will die happy.

Overall, I honestly think that if someone asks me about sub vs dub, I can tell them that both are great watching experiences. Even the side characters sound good, like Kazu and Osamu -- who really do sound and have the tones of kids, which is something I find a lot of places struggle to get right.
