Introducing my Touken Ranbu OC Yamatonokami Minomoto no Hidekuni (大和守源秀國) Hijikata Toshizo's 3rd Sword! 💕

A bit of history behind the sword

At the time Hidekuni swords were said to have been suitable for actual combat and easy to use. Kondo Isami the Shinsengumi's commander bought three of them as souvenirs with his corps funds.

Hidekuni is slightly shorter than Hijikata's other favorite swords. The tip is made to be light as it was designed to be usable with one hand, making it practical for combat.

Hijikata later gave Hidekuni to Akizuki Taneaki one of Aizu's retainers. Akizuki Taneaki fought alongside Hijikata at the Battle of Utsunomiya Castle in April 4th year of the Keio era, which is why there is the inscription [大和守源秀國（秋月種明懇望帯之）] "Yamato no kami Minamoto Hidekuni (Akizuki Taneaki Kanbou Obiyuki)"

The scabbard is coated with a special paint that has crushed sea shells mixed into it creating this glittery texture as well as Hijikata's favorite plum blossom depicted on it suggesting he was using it. The sword was later passed through the hands of freedom and civil rights activists and was then owned by a Shinsengumi researcher in Tokyo until finally being purchased by the Ryozan Historical Museum, which remains on permanent display and can be viewed at any time

Anyways, WOOOOOO I got this done, and...man I really need a better way to do lineart.

For Hidekuni I based him more on off real-life Hijikata rather than Hakuouki Hijikata. I wanted to do this "Kane-san is Kyoto winds while Hidekuni is Edo Blossoms" kinda thing with him. I know that the real-life Hijikata did use a gun at some point but I couldn't find whether he used a rifle or pistol so I just put an empty gun holster on him. I also included Hijikata's pocket watch. I wanted his hair to look like real-life Hijikata's but with Kane-san styled bangs.

I imagined if Touken Danshi existed in Hakuouki it would look like Kondo was adopting a bunch of kids when he bought those 3 Hidekuni swords (￣▽￣*)

Also, I imagined SSL Hijikata would be a single dad raising 3 kids on his own if Kane-san, Horikawa, and Hidekuni existed in SSL 🤣LOL

A/N: oh my sweet, sweet boy

Pairing: Hijikata x Chizuru

Summary: It’s been a long day, a long life. Hijikata is sick and tired of being called a demon. Is there anyone out there who doesn’t see him as one?

The name Hijikata could not be spoken without ‘Demon Vice-Commander of the Shinsengumi’ following quickly after it. There was a point in time when Hijikata loathed the nickname, it was something that Okita used to taunt him. It was something others used to mock what the Shinsengumi stood for. But now? Now the name echoed throughout the streets of Kyoto, it begged passers-by to let them through. Now the mere utterance of the mock title brought fear into his enemies’ eyes. Now… he still hated it now.

He almost wanted the name to grow on him, like how one meets an annoying person and their traits (that you once found annoying) become endearing over time. The nickname did not. It stayed foul, always lingering with a bitter taste in his mouth.

His pen quickly brushed the paper, elegant letters cascading over thin sheets, black ink staining. Signed Hijikata Toshizō. He stared blankly at the paper. Briefly he pondered the tought of scribbling out his name and simply signing it ‘The Demon’. The thought made him frown harder. He couldn’t live up to the nickname, it was ridiculous people had dubbed him so the in the first. What, simply because he followed a strict regime and made sure to ensure the same ideals onto his men that suddenly made him a demon? He shook the thought from his mind. Nevermind that, he had more important things to focus on.

His attention, however dwindling, was disrupted by the gentle call of his name. “Hijikata-san? I’ve brought you some tea.”

“Come in.” Was his gruff response.

Now there was a person who no matter what always said his name with the utmost tenderness; Yukimura Chizuru. A smile threatened to tug on his lips as she gently laid the tea to rest beside his work table. Always the careful one. She idly poured the tea, her attention lazer sharp as though her very life depended on this tea. With a satisfied smile she met his waiting gaze. “Don’t work too hard.” She murmured before bowing politely, leaving the room with a swift exit through the shoji.

Hijikata’s gaze remained on the spot she’d disappeared from. The same smile from before finally curling on his lips. Yes, he might still hate the nickname but at the very least one person could say his actual name. And could say it with the sweetest smile.

I usually really prefer ships that are like “we have complicated history, we cant live without the other, we are so different but so similar in all things that matter” that i cant explain to you how surprised i am at just how much i like ginhiji (hijikata x gintoki from gintama)

The show itself and most characters (kondou had a whole ass monologue about it during the thorny arc) go to great lengths to empathise just how similar those two are. Their mannerism, behaviour, stories. Insert they are the same picture meme. And they are, really. Not the “two sides of the same coin” NO they basically share everything, from complicated backstory to a found family, even if Gintoki technically had it harder

So you would think they wouldn’t work as a fun pairing. Gintoki has that whole thing with his three bros going on (dont get me started on the whole Takasugi situation), Hijikata also has complicated relationships with his coworkers, surely there are better options? AND YOU WOULD BE WRONG

Somehow nothing beats the way they are so attuned to each other. The way they fight, and in general the way gintama animates fights? Fucking hell. They value the same things in people, so their found families are also similar. They are both so fucking feral and deep into bad coping mechanisms, with Hijikata being a workaholic and Gintoki drinking and blowing momey in casino. Like you would think they dont work, they are so similar there is nothing interesting happening

But they are a comedic duo and both of them are like “surely i cant like that idiot?” They both think they are the only normal person in the room. While thinking the other is insane. Its so fucking good they are so dumb. But they also get each other on such intimate level. I cant

Hakuoki SSL～sweet school life～『Christmas Weekend』 2016 SS

Well, I've decided that this is going to be my last Hakuoki post for the year. For December, I plan on working on that Collar x Malice Xmas short story that I've been putting off for a while and the next Deemo chapter... and then I'll probably try to do something about my non-existent queue since I really don't think I'll be able to translate much in January or February because of my exam... though I swear that I'll at least put in some effort. Also I do want to get back to Hakumyu Hijikata-hen's extras. Been sitting on those for a while because life's been busy... 😅 ehehehe.... (facepalm).

Anyway, this translation is originally from a story that was posted by Otomate in 2016... and I am 70% sure that this image was published with it. Unfortunately, I can't check since the link it was posted to no longer works, and I also can't check where I found the tl for this story (unlike most things, I know where it was located... but it was on blog.sina and I can't do anything about unviewable content). Still, I had this image in my drafts for years with a note blurb about the the 2016 SSL Xmas story so it probably is the right one?

This year, a Christmas event was to be held on the 24th of December, between 3 consecutive days of vacation.

Although the 23rd is a Friday and a holiday, [since] the 24th fell on a Saturday and the 25th fell on Sunday, which resulted in a 3 day consecutive holiday, it was a rare occurrence to have such a Christmas holiday in recent years [SSL is set in 2016 [or so the tl note said]…. which had December 23rd, a Japanese national holiday which celebrates the birth of Emperor Akihito, fall on a Friday]. Therefore, it is very meaningful for those who had people of significance to them such as family, loved ones, and close friends who enjoyed such holiday activities.

However, there were also people who couldn't be included among them. Those who were working for example, who were unable to celebrate or find time to spend together with their partners, and those who did not make plans for Christmas, or even the holiday… Yukimura Chizuru was one of those people.

Chizuru did not originally intend to spend Christmas like this.

However, her father, Yukimura Kodo, was on a business trip at an offshore island and hadn't returned, while her older twin brother, Nagumo Kaoru, the adopted son of the Nagumo family, was spending Christmas with them.

Additionally, since the holiday this year had consecutive days, according to the usual conventions, Principal Kondou asked that the school activities be kept simple. Of course, Chairman Serizawa did not hold any Christmas activities.

It would have usually just been girls… Chizuru had originally thought that, but Suzuka Sen and Suzuka Kosuzu, who she had good relationships with, also had three consecutive days off, so they had gone back to their hometown in Kyoto to spend Christmas, and Chizuru had just seen them off yesterday.

Then her friends from junior high school were apparently going to an event by their new high school to play with a group and some boys. Chizuru was also invited, but as she was the only student from another school, even she participated, she would still experience anxiousness [tl says stage fright… so w/e], so she didn't go.

In this way, the 24th became a day without any plans.

So, what were the boys at Hakuo Gakuen who had good relationships with Chizuru? She didn't know why, [but] she hadn't hadn't received any invitations from them. She had already asked her childhood friend, Toudou Heisuke, indirectly, but he had refused and said that he had something else happening that day. In addition to Heisuke, it appeared that everyone else had a similar reason.

( It was just, the "something" Heisuke mentioned definitely had nothing to do with other girls! Chizuru tried to persuade herself about this.)

(That's right… For 3 consecutive days off, everyone else must have their own plans. Yet I….)

Thinking this, Chizuru had a sudden realization. Because she had realized it was the Christmas holiday, she had a strong desire to spend it with someone, even though it was simply 3 consecutive days off… As long as it could be thought of as a normal weekend, it wasn't strange that there was nothing to do.

（——Hm. Although it's a bit early, the end of the year is approaching anyway, so it wouldn't be bad to do a lot of cleaning.)

Just as Chizuru thought that, she received a text message on her phone, with the sender being Toudou Heisuke. She thought he wanted to call her for something so she picked up her phone and looked at it——.

Chizuru stared at her phone's screen and tilted her head in confusion. What danger would there be on a calm and peaceful Saturday afternoon? But if what Heisuke said in his text message was true, there apparently was some sort of danger 【outside her home】, which was why she had been told to 【not go outside】.

She tried to get him to reply about if he had made a mistake or meant something else, but she received no response. Although she did try to directly call him, she only received a voicemail.

(What should I do? Maybe something happened to Heisuke-kun…)

Anyway, let’s go to Heisuke’s house next door first. She thought about this while she recalled the content of the text message he sent.

Just as she thought that, a message notification rang out in the silent room. She hastily got to checking her phone, but its sender was not Heisuke. The sender this time was Okita Souji.

What could be learned from the text messages received was that something was happening to everyone. And the contents were almost the same, Not only were the contents were almost the same, they were all instructions for her to not leave her home… However, Chizuru was incapable of honestly staying home as everyone was saying. She grabbed her coat and hurried towards the entrance, not bothering with how her shoes were only half-on, and only wanted to open the [front] door and go outside. Accompanying the sound of being hit by the door, Chizuru was then pushed back into the inner entrance [uh, something like that?].

"——Why!? Why!"

Chizuru re-confirmed that the door was already unlocked again, and once again tried to open it, but the door remained motionless. It was as if someone was forcibly holding the door from outside, deliberately making it impossible for her to open the door.

Since that was the case, she could just use her body to press against the entrance with all of her strength to push it open. Just as Chizuru was about to do that, a voice spoke from the other side side of the door.

"Yukimura, I'm sorry… I cannot let you go outside."

"……This voice is Hijikata-sensei!? Why are you here…. that doesn't need to be mentioned now, what happened?"

She was pushing against the door while speaking to him, but it didn't work due to Hijikata's suppression from outside.

"Just lock up all the locks…… stay inside your home. After that…… Until one of says you can open the door, absolutely do not…… open it….. for anyone of us….."

Then Hijikata's voice disappeared midway. At the same time, the suppressing heaviness on the entrance hall also disappeared.

"Hijikata-sensei——!!"

Chizuru used all of her strength to push against the door, and the heavy door finally budged a bit, so she squeezed through the crack in the doorway that large enough for a single person to pass through and went outside.

Then what Chizuru saw was——.

"You've finally come out? My wife, you're late."

Dressed in a bright red Santa outfit, while also holding a large white bag and a bouquet with dozens of roses, was Kazama Chikage.

Then there was Toudou Heisuke, who was tightly holding onto Kazama's legs, Saito, who was grabbing Kazama's arms from behind him, and Okita, who was watching the two with a smile.

There was also Harada, who was sitting not too far away, looking a bit helpless, and Hijikata Toshizou, who was sitting against the door, motionless.

As Kazama spoke, he extended his hand towards Chizuru, and upon seeing this, Heisuke immediately ran over.

"Hold it——！ Don't joke around——！"

"I didn't expect that so many of us wouldn't be able to stop him…"

With a serious expression, Saito tried to pull Kazama away from Chizuru. Okita muttered helplessly.

"Is is possible that everyone saying that there was something they were busy with today meant…"

"Ah, that's right! In order to prevent Kazama-senpai from coming here, we started monitoring him in the morning!"

"I-I hope you're not misunderstanding anything. We were monitoring Kazama, not your home."

"Wait a moment Harada-sensei. Even though you are resting, please come and help me me—"

"Hey, Yukimura! We'll definitely drive Kazama away, so just stay at home and wait!"

"Ahahahahahaha!! Even if you struggle, it will all be futile! My sincere love is incapable of being stopped by anything! Surrender to my power of Christmas!"

With six adults arguing in front of house and making a racket, it was inevitable… that passers-by would stop and whisper, while people nearby would open up their windows to watch the fun…

"Please….. Please stop stop it——！！"

Because she was feeling heartbroken from this argument that seemed like it would never end… and more importantly, since Chizuru was more concerned about her neighbour's gazes, she therefore suggested holding a Christmas party inside her home, which finally got both sides to call a temporary truce.

"Wait a second, where did all of this food and decorations come from?"

"Of course, this is the result of the Kazama family's efforts, so be grateful."

"I'll say this beforehand, we didn't invite you, and simply couldn't leave you outside and bother/cause trouble for the neighbours."

"Didn't my wife ask everyone to come inside together?"

"Nn… Is this the inside of Yukimura's home…" "Well, if we had planned to find a place to hold the Christmas party from the beginning, there wouldn't have been that commotion. Speaking of which, who was the one to suggest it?"

"The person who said that they wanted to stop Kazama-senpai's plan, was Heisuke."

"Hey, wait a sec! Souji and Hajime-kun agreed too!"

"……You guys, just shut up. I am rarely able/You are seldom able to spend Christmas with my wife [no subject in this part so I don't know who is referring to whom here], so just enjoy this day and this moment."

Dear Sir, I understand the details of your letter. As I am about to leave for my hometown, I have a letter from Matsumoto-sensei for you, but I will not be able to see you for a while. As requested, I will send you the letter from him. Tomorrow on the 27th, I will pass through Kyoto and Osaka to visit the temples. I will inquire about Kondo-sensei's head and the graves of comrades, and I will go to Taniai and Miyagawa to make inquiries. I would also like to ask for your kind cooperation. Commentary

It’s written that he plans to go to Kyoto tomorrow to search for the burial place of Kondo Isami's head and the graves of his comrades. Since the fall of 1890, Nagakura had been scrambling to raise funds from related people for the 23rd anniversary of the deaths of Kondo Isami and Hijikata Toshizo, and to repair the memorial tombs of Shinsengumi members (currently located in front of JR Itabashi Station).

In 1868, Kondo Isami, leader of the Shinsengumi, was jailed for twenty days at Itabashi, and beheaded at the execution grounds. A memorial to him stands at the east (Takino-gawa) exit of Itabashi Station. On the right side are engraved the names of forty Shinsengumi people who died in war, and on the left, the names of 64 who died of disease, seppuku, or other causes. To the left of the memorial is a Buddha statue dedicated to people who died without relatives to care for their graves, and to the right, the graves of Kondō and Nagakura Shinpachi, who is said to have erected the memorial. There is also a stone for Hijikata Toshizō, who died in battle at Goryōkaku.

The memorial was built by Nagakura Shinpachi, who we have largely to thank for writing detailed memoirs and accounts of the Shinsengumi and their actions, in 1876. Although some have named this as the Shinsengumi Grave, this is incorrect. Despite the fact that Kondou Isami met his end in Itabashi, he is not buried here. His head was sent to Kyoto and his body to Mitaka. The only actual grave that is located inside the memorial grounds is that of Nagakura Shinpachi. To the left you can see a stone tablet honoring Kondou Isami, as well as the grave of Nagakura Shinpachi himself. At the center is a monument dedicated to both Kondou Isami and Hijikata Toshizou.

To the right is a large stone tablet engraved with more than 100 names of Shinsengumi men who had died in the years leading up to and immediately following the Meiji Restoration in the Boshin Wars. The very first two names are Kondou Isami and Hijikata Toshizou.

Although the memorial is well-kept and clean, it’s not well-marked. All of the locals however seem to know where it is, so if you ask you’re sure to be able to find it. There are no English explanations, and the place is not very big, but it does have a certain atmosphere appropriate for a memorial site. I would recommend going only if you’re a diehard fan of the Shinsengumi though (like me). Located near the East Exit of JR Itabashi Station

Hijikata/Tae & Loid/Yor

Yes, another random couple comparison meta post from yours truly. This time, we will be noting the similarities of Hijikata x Tae with Loid x Yor from Spy x Family. This is something I have discussed with @arirna (who I thank for early feedback on this post) a few times over the last couple of years, and then most recently with @suchine-toki, so this meta post is dedicated to both of them!

SPOILERS AHEAD for Gintama and Spy x Family if you are unfamiliar with one or both of the series.

HijiTae is one of the earliest ships I became utterly devoted to, resulting in comparisons to similar ships ever since then. I can’t help it; I used to do the same with Bulma and Vegeta of Dragon Ball Z, who were my first ever OTP.

I started reading Spy x Family early in 2019, pretty much when it began serialization – much thanks to @arirna for his manga recommendations! I immediately liked it, and as the story progressed, we both realized something about Loid and Yor: they had That Dynamic. The HijiTae Dynamic. Now, we’re very biased toward HijiTae, but then @suchine-toki mentioned also seeing a strong HijiTae similarity in Loid and Yor, as well, so that confirmed the dynamic from a more objective viewpoint. We don’t just have HijiTae permanently engraved on our brains – there IS a certain dynamic to be found in other ships. It’s almost challenging to narrow it down to a handful of tropes. Suffice to say, you just know it when you see it, when it all feels familiar.

Now, let us unpack the similarities:

Note: I’ve fallen behind on the SxF manga, and I just recently caught up with the anime, so I’m using various SxF character bios for information. This is not an in-depth analysis, but rather a general one to generate ideas and discussion.

HIJIKATA and LOID Fans may instinctively connect Loid and Gintoki instead because of their main character status, but Loid actually has more in common with Hijikata than he does with anyone else in Gintama, and vice versa. This doesn’t mean you can’t envision Gintoki as Loid, or another favourite MC in Loid’s shoes. By all means, go for it. Fanfic and fanart open up the possibilities. I’m simply saying that in terms of basic commonalities, Loid and Hijikata can shake hands more confidently than any other two characters within their respective series. Hijikata may be rougher around the edges and Loid can be more charming as part of his work, but they have many things in common:

They’ve both had a traumatic childhood, losing both of their parents and other important family figures (I don’t know too much about Loid’s past yet other than the part concerning his mother).

They take their jobs seriously and work hard to ensure complete success.

They are strict on subordinates or others under their tutelage for good reason.

They serve under a higher authority figure (Kondou and Handler).

They both have nicknames – Demon and Twilight – with reputations for being not only skilled but also austere and dangerous.

They are capable of undercover missions. Loid, obviously more so, but Hijikata has done some undercover work, too.

They both have a colleague obsessed with them in different ways: Sougo and Fiona.

They both have a colleague who also serves as a friend, foil, and comedic relief: Kondou and Franky.

They both have an enemy in the brother of their love interests: Sougo again, with Mitsuba, and then potentially Shinpachi with Tae in the fanon realm (except I don’t believe Shinpachi would be as extreme as Sougo); for Loid, it’s Yuri with Yor.

They have been left speechless by Tae and Yor for different reasons, usually as part of comedy scenes.

They both smoke or have smoked before, as @suchine-toki reminded me here (thanks again!).

They are frequently the Straight Man in comedy scenes, questioning the bizarre events happening around them, although Hijikata is likelier to participate in the weirdness now and then compared to Loid, whose weirdness – to people around him – is more grounded in how impressed people are by his mind. Not that people aren’t impressed with Hijikata’s mind, lol, but Gintama fans will understand best what I’m getting at here (because sometimes even Kondou is embarrassed by Hijikata, and that says a lot!).

TAE and YOR Yor has quickly become iconic with an instantly recognizable outfit that has inspired many a crossover/AU fanart for other series. Since there aren’t nearly as many Tae fans in comparison to Yor’s, you might be wondering what on earth could they possibly have in common? The answer is: a lot more than you initially thought, I’d bet!

They both lost their parents at a young age and had to raise their little brothers by themselves.

They both can’t cook and are notorious for creating toxic meals by chance.

They both have brothers who are very attached and protective of their older sisters. Shinpachi isn’t as extreme as Yuri, though, lol.

They both had shoulder-length hair as children (a very basic similarity, but you’ll see why I mention it in the pics below).

They both work ordinary jobs (hostess, office worker), but have other jobs/lives (Deva, assassin).

They have similar personalities: kind, smiling, polite…

…But they also have explosive tempers when provoked, making them frightening figures in their own right. Tae is also more cunning than Yor, I’d say.

They are both known for being physically very strong, especially at moments where they need to protect others or themselves.

They both have nicknames, such as Boss Lady and Queen of Kabukicho (Tae) and Thorn Princess (Yor).

They’re both skilled in their chosen weapons of choice (naginata, knives/ice picks).

Others look up to them as mother/older sister figures, such as Kagura and Anya.

They both have a colleague/friend that is occasionally antagonistic toward them depending on the context. For Tae, Sacchan tends to play that role, as well as Ane at Snack Smile. In Yor’s case, we have Camilla. Yet, we have seen them cooperate with Tae and Yor when it counts.

HIJI/TAE & LOID/YOR Now we come to the heart of this post: the similarities between Hijikata x Tae and Loid x Yor. Given that one ship is considered more canon and widely accepted than the other, what is it that unites them in terms of dynamic and possibility? Let’s take a look:

Personality Contrast: It’s clear they each differ in personality except for when it comes to those that are important to them. We see how Loid and Yor have the same goals concerning Anya. Hijikata is utterly devoted to Kondou, and Tae stood up for Kondou before a corrupt Shogun, so Kondou is like Anya’s equivalent in this context. Tae and Yor are viewed as bright, cheerful people in contrast to Hijikata and Loid’s seemingly cold, stoic natures – yet we’ve also seen both men display passion for subjects that interest or provoke them.

Frightening Figures: This goes without saying. Individually, all of them are scary in their own right, but together? Yikes! Okay, that was cheesy, but you get my point. Loid and Yor are feared for different reasons, but put them together, and they become extremely fearsome, especially when it comes to protecting Anya. Same with Hijikata and Tae, who are already feared by many people, and together, they would be a fearful power couple. (Incidentally and ironically, both Tae and Hijikata fear ghosts.) It’s also worth noting that Hijikata and Loid are often left stunned by Tae and Yor’s feats of strength, and are sometimes on the receiving end, lol.

Relationship of Convenience: This is obvious with Loid and Yor; they have entered a marriage of convenience for both of them in order to carry on with their covert operations. For Hijikata and Tae, a more comedic example is in the Time Skip arc when it was revealed that Hijikata was actually the father of Tae’s baby (if you don’t know Gintama, it’s too much to explain this arc right now, lol). Despite the circumstances, Hijikata was willing to take on the responsibility of raising the child, with or without Tae. If this arc was serious and something like that actually happened, I can imagine both Hijikata and Tae entering a similar relationship of convenience in order to raise their child together. They were both willing to give up what they had in order to give their fake baby a future (again, non-Gintama fans, if this all sounds bizarre, well, it’s supposed to be).

Now, in SxF, Loid and Yor’s relationship of convenience is central to the main plot, and I’m sure they will inevitably move toward a real, genuine love behind that relationship before the series’ end. In Gintama, it’s too late for anything really, and Sorachi didn’t handle his romance all that well (too complicated a subject to get into) by the end, but given the significance of the moments Hijikata and Tae did have, and their devotion to tradition, I imagine they would’ve made a good couple who can stand on equal footing with each other.

Cooking Skills: Loid appears to do most of the cooking than Yor, and I can imagine Hijikata sharing in the responsibility to make up for Tae’s notorious “skills.” Also, Hijikata’s mayonnaise obsession might be all that steels his stomach against Tae’s meals. Currently, Loid still passes out from consuming Yor’s meals, but there is a possibility of him building an immunity and being able to handle her cooking in the future. Yor takes steps to improve her cooking knowledge, and Tae has done the same with a cooking class in the past. Anyway, the point of this section is that the cooking dynamic is virtually the same for each ship.

Conversations: Both have had more in-depth conversations with each other than surface-level interactions. Think Loid and a tipsy Yor in the park, and Hijikata and Tae at Snack Smile in the Yagyuu arc. When the comedy and the rarity of their interactions pass, these two ships can actually have good conversations with one another, confiding when necessary and influencing the other in a positive way.

Anyway, that’s all I have to say about Hijikata/Tae and Loid/Yor for now. I’ll be glad to hear of more similarities that I probably missed. Like I said, I’m not up-to-date on the SxF manga, so I don’t know it as well as I know Gintama, but I think I managed to cover most of the basics. Still, I’m always up for friendly discussion concerning these two ships and their similar dynamic.

My least favorite take when it comes to the Hijikata x Mitsuba situation is that their separation is all Hijikata's fault. That it's him and his singular focus on the Shinsengumi, his lack of self-esteem, his fears, that are why they didn't get to be together. That just doesn't make sense to me.

Because it takes two to tango in a relationship.

Hijikata might've rebuffed Mitsuba's confession, but it was Mitsuba's choice to not continue pursuing him and to stay behind in Bushu. Because she loved them, she loved the Shinsengumi so much that she didn’t want to do anything that would be a distraction to them, to him.

“Those three always looked happiest when they were hanging out together. There was no place for a girl among them.”

“You’re leaving me behind. Don’t let me down. Stick to your path. I believe in you. I believe in you.”

That’s why Hijikata goes after her shitty fiancé with no hesitation. That’s why Kondou, Okita, and everyone go to help Hijikata, even when Mitsuba’s at death’s door in the hospital. That’s why we don’t see Hijikata by her bed, hearing her last words. Because that’s the Hijikata Toushirou and the Shinsengumi Mitsuba loved.

Rarepairs that I think could work

Hijikata x Tae

There aren't many scenes where they interact, but the ones they do, they show chemistry and are fun together. On one hand, Hijikata has always been a very respectful guy towards Tae, even when he argues with her. Besides, he has a good salary, and she likes his way of flirting. On the other hand, while the similarities between Tae and Mitsuba can be somewhat disconcerting to Hijikata and may influence him to take the same path, Tae with her strong personality would knock some sense into him. I like to imagine that she is the one who falls in love first and that Hijikata is conflicted about it. Likewise, the potential drama that would ensue with Kondou would be very interesting, as well as seeing him eventually give them his blessing because he appreciates them so much and wants them to be happy.

Kondou x Hinowa

Although I love Kondou, I’ve to admit his stalker side isn’t the best, even if it’s used in a comical way. He and Hinowa never spoke, which is a shame since they’d so much potential, starting with both being considered the core of their organization (the soul of the Shinsengumi / the sun of Yoshiwara). I like to imagine the Shinsengumi members urging Kondou to go to Yoshiwara to get over Tae. But he, not in the mood to visit a courtesan, simply goes to Hinowa's Tea House, and there they meet, talk, and Hinowa comforts him. Although Kondou finds her very beautiful, unlike with Tae, he doesn't fall in love at first sight with her or stalks her, but they form a nice friendship first. Hinowa might start to see Kondou as a potential partner by appreciating how fatherly Kondou is to Seita, and the three of them could be seen having family moments together. The fact that Hinowa is slightly older than Kondou adds an interesting factor. Also, this would allow the Shinsengumi to be connected to Yoshiwara in a more direct way, since they didn’t associate much during the series.

Kyuubei x Pirako

As in the previous case, they didn’t interact. However, I think their dynamic would’ve been fun, with Kyuubei being the tsukkomi to Pirako's boke. Interesting rivalry scenarios could also arise, as Kyuubei is a member of an aristocratic samurai family and Pirako is a yakuza. Thus, they would’ve some fights and banter. While one learns to let go and be more chaotic, the other learns to be more compassionate and honest. They could also bond over their fathers, who forced them to live experiences against their will (being raised as a boy and abandonment). Being both katana users, they would practice and polish their sword skills together while getting closer and closer.

Sometimes, I have a lots of Hijikatagumi feels regarding a Peacemaker Kurogane x Touken Ranbu crossover considering Katsugeki shown Izuminokami remembers Tetsunosuke and how he was the one who carried him to Hijikata’s family when his master sent him away before his death. Since Tetsunosuke stayed with Hijikata in his most critical moments and even rejected his own older brother to stay with his master, I also believe Izuminokami is deeply grateful towards him for his loyalty and support to Hijikata when he needed it the most, specially after the deaths of Kondou and Okita.

And that Horikawa interacted three years with Hijikata and Tetsunosuke in said series, as well.

Hakuoki - Modern AU - Teacher

Pairing: Female reader x Hijikata

Warnings: none

Word counts: 454

A/N: I had the idea to write about school AU with hijikata after I read a bit about the plot of hakuoki SSL (they will release this game on switch this year btw. But no idea if they’ll one day localize it). Y/N is not based on hakuoki’s MC (Chizuru).

I don’t know how many chapters this fic will have. So far, there are no warnings, but I can’t promise I won’t add some smut or triggering topics in the next chapters.

And I don’t intend to post one chapter a day/week. I’ll try to give a proper end to this fic as soon as possible, but the truth is that it can take months to finish it.

CHAPTER 1

Y/N – “So, you are saying you know how to improve my humor?”

Kondou – “Precisely! I know exactly what you need to smile again. Look right there.”

Y/N – “Oh my fucking god! Who is that ikemen in the library?”

Kondou – “Hey, lady! Watch your mouth! We are at the school.”

Y/N – (gets excited) “Kondou, help. He is so hot! How come I have never seen this guy before?”

Kondou – “Hehehe. That’s a good question.”

Kondou – “So… Did your humor improve a little bit?”

Y/N – “Yep. You do know what I like haha.”

Kondou – *chuckles* “I’m glad I could help. That’s what friends are for.”

Y/N – “Well… I think I owe you one now. Let me know if you need anything.”

Kondou – “Don’t mention it.”

Y/N – “Who is that guy, by the way?”

Kondou – “Oh, he is a teacher here. And my friend. Oh, and he is also my assistant principal.”

Y/N – “Damn… This one sure works a lot. You better give a raise to your friend later ahaha.”

Y/N – “Oh, speaking of which… it looks like he just saw us. And he seems angry. Maybe he wants to talk to you. I better get going now. See ya!”

Kondou – “Y/N, wait! Don’t you want to know him? I can…”

Before Kondou could finish his sentence, Y/N is already far away. And walking at a fast pace to get to her appointment on time.

Hijikata – “Hey, Kondou-san, who was that woman?”

Kondou – “Oh, hi, Toshi. I hope we didn’t interrupt your work.”

Hijikata – “Not really, but why were you two staring at me?”

Kondou – “Oh, about that… haha.”

Kondou – “You know, you are very popular with the ladies.”

Hijikata – “Right… Well, anyway, care to say who is she?”

Kondou – “Oh, right! Y/N is a friend of mine I met two years ago when I went to visit the international school she works at. She is here in Tokyo to attend a school conference.”

Hijikata – “I see. So she was here to talk about business or something? I’m sure everything was already ready for the conference. I checked myself.”

Kondou – “No, no, no. As I said, you are popular with the ladies.”

Hijikata – “Well, if you are not going to say it, so be it. I’m heading home.”

Hijikata – “Ah, and before I forget. Don’t you try to set me up on another date. Just like you said, the school conference is coming. I don’t have time for this.”

Kondou – “Geez, Toshi. She is a very pretty lady, you know? A lot of men would die just to get a chance to go on a date with her. You are not getting young…”

And just like Y/N, Hijikata left Kondou speaking to himself without saying another word.

MASTERLIST

"Cigarette?" The sudden sound of his gruff voice startles you, empty pack slipping out of your freezing hands in surprise before you swiftly turn around to face whoever decided to sneak up on you so rudely in the middle of the night. "Sorry, I didn't mean to frighten you."

Hijikata approaches you with unfaltering steps, a cigarette hanging loosely from his pursed lips and another one rolling between his calloused fingers already stretched into your direction for you to take. The first two buttons of his shirt are undone, his white collar exposes more skin than usual and you can't help but let your curious eyes follow the shadows of his delicate collarbones in the pale lighting of the moon that reaches for the two of you.

"Oh, look who decided to bless me with his presence," you mumble with a sly grin as you take his offer and snatch the cigarette from his grasp, silently asking for a light with an arched brow.

Sighing heavily, Hijikata searches his pockets for his own lighter and carefully holds the flickering flame to your lips until you can take a lazy drag and watch the smoke rise to the darkened sky. "You seem tired, Toshi. I haven't seen you in a while, thought you might call after our third date."

There's no anger behind your words, nothing accusatory nor threatening, only concern glimmering vividly in your enticing eyes when you finally lift your gaze to meet his.

Still, guilt begins to claw at his mind and gnaw at his heart at the sight of you, casually leaning against the wall of the bar you've been drinking in only a few minutes ago — you are so beautiful, fucking angelic underneath the stars and the whole universe surrounding this little planet, he almost feels unworthy of standing next to you.

The scent of your sweet perfume traces over his clothing and curls around his feet stuck in heavy leather boots, tempting him to take a step closer and pull you flush against his sturdy chest.

He doesn't.

Instead, Toushirou only bows his head and stares at the ground with embarrassed determination, a deep blush evident on his pale cheeks. Heat surges through every cell of his being as you considerately rest your hand on his tense shoulder, icy fingertips brushing over the warm skin of his exposed neck and fiddling with the collar of his shirt, carefully smoothing out the small wrinkles in the fabric.

It's a small gesture full of affection and god, does his body cave at your touch, so tender and gentle as if he might break, should your hold on him become too harsh.

“I’m sorry,” Hijikata rasps after a while and lets the gleaming stump of his burnt cigarette drop in the mud. He is tired, you’re awfully right, but he can’t just take a break from work, and leaving Kondo and Sougo unsupervised with the rest of the Shinsengumi for more than five minutes makes nausea bloom in the pit of stomach.

That is impossible, nearly unthinkable and he’s absolutely certain, Edo wouldn’t survive any longer if he’d let these two out of his sight for even the smallest amount of time.

They are more of a hazard to society than its protector and maybe, maybe that’s the reason why he can’t get a decent amount of sleep at night. Though now that Hijikata thinks about it, he'd rather spend his time with you than playing babysitter for two grown men but life doesn't always go as planned.

“Toshi.” His name rolls of your tongue like a prayer, soft-spoken and comforting in a strange way that makes him want to curl against your chest and rest for an eternity, safe and sound in your arms engulfing his broad frame and taking the weight of the world away, just for a fleeting moment. That’s all he wants. “I understand that you’re a busy man and I don’t expect a lot, but you have to take care of yourself. Please.”

The palm of your hand glides over his arm and reaches his own, fingers intertwining as you speak to him, cigarette already burnt to the filter and long forgotten on the ground between your feet. "Work isn't everything and it would be nice to believe that you could spare two minutes to relax... or call me."

“I know, I know,” he replies with a pensive shake of his head. “I should really take a day off once in a while, shouldn’t I?” A smile brightens your features at his thoughtful statement, head vigorously nodding along with each syllable of his words.

Your thumb caresses the back of his hand, draws small circles over his knuckles until you loosen your grasp seconds later, and delicately wrap your fingers around his arm instead, bringing his wrist to your lips to press a chaste kiss to his skin, right where he’s shown you a battle scar on your second date. His pulse flutters excitedly under the sensation of your lips on the inside of his wrist and he has to bite back a small groan at the loss of contact when you pull back.

“Come with me, Toshi. Let me take care of you for one day and then you can go back to work, you need some time off.” A reluctant tug on his black sleeve follows your offer and soon enough, he finds himself trailing after you like a lost puppy, seeking your warmth with a small smile tugging on the corners of his mouth.

Slowing your pace, you throw a glance over your shoulder and wait patiently until he’s caught up to you. Without a second thought, he takes your hand and although a part of him fears what the Shinsengumi might do without him around, he can’t wait to spend some time with you.
