Bad Endbach

Bad Endbach ist eine Gemeinde im mittelhessischen Landkreis Marburg-Biedenkopf. Sie liegt 20 Kilometer westlich von Marburg, 15 Kilometer östlich von Dillenburg und 20 Kilometer nördlich von Wetzlar im so genannten Hessischen Hinterland. Der als Kneipp-Heilbad anerkannte Thermalort ist eingebettet im Zentrum des Gladenbacher Berglandes im Naturpark Lahn-Dill-Bergland. Er ist geprägt durch die bewaldete Hügellandschaft, die sanftgewellten Bottenhorner Hochflächen im Norden (im Mittel 500 m ü. NN) und das sich nach Osten öffnende Tal am Oberlauf der Salzböde. Südlich geht das Salzbödetal in den Höhenzug der Zollbuche mit der Endbacher Platte über. Bad Endbach hat einen großen Waldbestand, nahezu ein Drittel (32,5 %) des Gemeindegebietes ist mit Wald bedeckt. Das schon relativ früh dauerhaft besiedelte Gemeindegebiet (6. bis 8. Jahrhundert) durchquerten bis ins späte Hochmittelalter wichtige Handels- und Botenwege, und zwar die ehemals sehr bedeutende „Leipzig-Kölner Fernhandelsstraße“ („Brabanter Straße“) und der „Westfalenweg“.  – Zum Artikel …

Impressions from three different bicycle rides from the past two weeks:

• Silbersee (Silver Pond) near Tringenstein – an old quarry turned into a lake where turtles have been living for a couple of years.

• A bit of green in an otherwise parched landscape near Erdbach

• Stark reminders of the climate crisis near Lippe. A couple of years ago I cycled to the Trödelsteine, a formation of stones, and all around, the forests were still green. Now, most of the firs have died due to drought and beetles.

Walked to Seelbach to donate blood and encountered some beautiful autumn colours on the way back.

Tried out a partly new cycle route yesterday, which led be past some grand views – and evidence of climate change. At least the part of the forest with the dead firs is designated as an area of natural woodland recovery now. Had to cycle a detour, too, because part of the track was blocked by fallen trees (far too many to carry the bike across).
