Tips to stop self-hate

I was asked by a young person to provide some advice on my experience coping with this issue and they said it was very helpful so I thought I would share the same advice with all of you. This is one of those things that has a big hurdle, but then requires less costly touch-ups. It's worth the effort, and certainly in the long run will cost you less energy and misery than just giving in to the hate.

These are steps but obviously you just do them in whatever order makes sense to you and kind of all at the same time.

Step 1 - Acceptance. You're not going to be a perfect image of a person, which is fine because no one else is either. We're all messes trying to make it through, some of us struggle with that more than others. Struggling doesn't make you weak or a bad person. Suffering isn't noble or moral or Good™. It's just suffering. Don't make yourself suffer too, the world is cruel enough, kindness is all we have. Imperfection is normal.

Step 2 - Forgiveness. Forgive yourself for your mistakes. Forgive yourself for being who you are, if you have to. You can forgive yourself and still be responsible by focusing on what you learned. You learned how not to behave or treat a person. Those lessons suck, but you know you won't make that mistake again. The next time you're tempted to make the same mistake, you remember, and you don't do it, so you don't have to feel shitty again. Less shit in the future. This is progress.

Step 3 - Friendship. Talk to and about yourself like you'd talk to your best friend. This one is the hardest but ultimately the most effective. Would you call your friend stupid or useless or whatever horrible things you say about yourself? Would you keep a friend who spoke to you that way? You want to be friends with yourself you have to treat yourself like a friend. Be kinder. Be more understanding. If you catch yourself calling yourself names or whatever, stop and imagine you saw someone else do what you did. How would you react? You likely wouldn't be so mean. Step back now and then and look at yourself from the outside, you're not as bad as you think. And no one can read your mind.

The most important thing you need to keep in mind here is never compare yourself. Just like no one would know how you feel or what's going on in your head just by looking at you, you don't know what's happening in other people's lives. Comparing yourself to others is comparing against your own imagined perfection. You don't need to be like anyone else or do things the way everyone else does. Live life the way it works for you.

Things I've seen tumblr memeing about James Somerton doing à la "How did no one see how bigoted he was!" as if those things haven't been a significant part of tumblr culture for over a decade :

Presenting untrue and bordering on conspiratorial versions of (queer or otherwise marginalised) history without any sources

Completely disregarding and disrespecting any expertise on socio-cultural topics/humanities and distrusting academics and historians (incl. acting as if no academics or historians could be queer or marginalised)

Downplaying the role misogyny played in the historical oppression of queer women and concluding that queer men must have been more oppressed than queer women

Bi women are, at best, not as queer as "real" queer ppl, and at worst, simply equivalent to straight women

Despite nominal trans inclusivity, transmasculine ppl are functionally women when convenient (combined with the above, bi transmascs are functionally straight women)

Despite nominal trans inclusivity (bis), shamelessly attacking, threatening and actively endangering any trans woman who questions them or smth they find important (often by unfairly presenting her as violent or as a threat)

Having absolutely fucking wild and reductive takes about ace ppl, the oppression they face and their place in the queer community

Stating that marriage equality is an assimilationist fight while completely ignoring its direct roots in the horrifying consequences of the AIDS crisis for partners of ppl who died of AIDS

Praising western media creators from the past for queer coding even under censure and in the same breath condemning current non western media creators for being homophobic bc their representation isn't explicit enough

Assuming all queer media would be better told by western creators and by western standards

Heavily criticising almost all queer media created by women or ppl they see as such (see above points about trans ppl) or involving/starring a significant amount of women for any perceived or real amount of "problematicness", but fawning over and praising and negating criticism of queer media created by and starring mostly or even functionally exclusively men (even when it could be argued that, you know, not involving/seriously sidelining women is a pretty clear example of misogyny which should probably be considered "problematic")

And I'm probably forgetting stuff or there's stuff I have internalised myself and don't recognise as an issue

Like idk but I feel like the takeaway from Hbomberguy and Toddintheshadow's videos should maybe be "be aware of such patterns in your communities bc they definitely exist" and not "this guy is uniquely awful" and I feel like a lot of the discussion I've seen surrounding this has been severely failing at that. Most ppl who've spent any significant amount of time on tumblr prob either have internalised at least one of those thought patterns, have had to de-internalise them, or have had to be extremely vigilant to not internalise them (which is done by, you know, seeking out other sources, which also seemed like an important takeaway from the videos)

As someone who’s living with a middle school social studies teacher, all the posts along the lines of “why did we never learn about this historical event in school” just make me go “because your teacher was supposed to cover all of US history in one year, and they didn’t get to the Revolutionary War until Halloween because they were urged to slow down the progression of the lessons because a more senior teacher was running behind, and they didn’t get to the Civil War until Valentine’s Day because the school kept scheduling every special event during social studies because there’s no end-of-grade testing for that subject, and they didn’t get to WWI until May because they were sick for a few days and the substitute couldn’t do much more than babysit, and now they’re having to do the entire Cold War in two days, so that’s why you didn’t hear about the lesbian inventor of the circus peanut. He's studying for the SAT, he's already been kidnapped by Vlad like, four times that week and it was a fucking Tuesday, he forgot his wallet at his new apartment, locked himself out of said new apartment (he could phase through the door but that wasn't the point), he's just been informed that the grant he applied for was denied so he needs to ask his mom and dad for college funds when he'd already told them he had it covered, and just...it was shit.

It had been shit. The entire week had been awful and annoying and he was ready to either murder everyone on the planet or go find a corner to cry in for the next three days.

So when the band of wild goons working for whatever villain of the week pulled up and tried to kidnap him, he snapped.

He used them to vent.

Shouted about how terrible his day had been, how terrible his week had been, how he'd already been kidnapped by his creepy godfather who was way too into him, how college funding was shit and the grant system was rigged, and how he'd have to call a locksmith or break down the door to his own apartment if he wanted to go to bed-all of it. He unloaded all of his frustration.

The goons actually backed off.

One of them gave him an awkward side hug and told him it'd get better.

Danny wasn't paying attention to his surrounding. He doesn't realize that the whole thing was livestreamed.

So when he gets home to his apartment later that day, his door is opened for him by the vigilante Spoiler before he can even turn intangible.

Today my therapist introduced me to a concept surrounding disability that she called "hLep".

Which is when you - in this case, you are a disabled person - ask someone for help ("I can't drink almond milk so can you get me some whole milk?", or "Please call Donna and ask her to pick up the car for me."), and they say yes, and then they do something that is not what you asked for but is what they think you should have asked for ("I know you said you wanted whole, but I got you skim milk because it's better for you!", "I didn't want to ruin Donna's day by asking her that, so I spent your money on an expensive towing service!") And then if you get annoyed at them for ignoring what you actually asked for - and often it has already happened repeatedly - they get angry because they "were just helping you! You should be grateful!!"

And my therapist pointed out that this is not "help", it's "hLep".

Sure, it looks like help; it kind of sounds like help too; and if it was adjusted just a little bit, it could be help. But it's not help. It's hLep.

At its best, it is patronizing and makes a person feel unvalued and un-listened-to. Always, it reinforces the false idea that disabled people can't be trusted with our own care. And at its worst, it results in disabled people losing our freedom and control over our lives, and also being unable to actually access what we need to survive.

So please, when a disabled person asks you for help on something, don't be a hLeper, be a helper! In other words: they know better than you what they need, and the best way you can honor the trust they've put in you is to believe that!

Also, I want to be very clear that the "getting angry at a disabled person's attempts to point out harmful behavior" part of this makes the whole thing WAY worse. Like it'd be one thing if my roommate bought me some passive-aggressive skim milk, but then they heard what I had to say, and they apologized and did better in the future - our relationship could bounce back from that. But it is very much another thing to have a crying shouting match with someone who is furious at you for saying something they did was ableist. Like, Christ, Jessica, remind me to never ask for your support ever again! You make me feel like if I asked you to call 911, you'd order a pizza because you know I'll feel better once I eat something!!

Random life advice

- Don't worry about following fads. The longer you live the more fads you see and the less you care. If the fad is fun and you like it, do it, but if you don't, you don't have to and literally no one cares.

- Talk to yourself like you'd talk to your best friend is the best advice I've ever gotten.

- Keep a couple items from your young childhood out on display because the further you get from childhood the nicer (and harder) it is to remember it

- If someone intentionally makes you vomit, aim for them. They'll never do it again.

- Make your enclosure your happy place. If that's a room or a house or a desk, make it yours. Don't listen to anyone who says things like "but if you paint all the walls not-white someone won't want to buy the house in the future" or "aren't you too old for..." they are Enemies of Happiness.

- Don't be an Enemy of Happiness. Let people like things you don't.

- Life is difficult and painful and will throw horrible things you couldn't ever plan for to make you miserable, so don't make it worse. Be kind. Especially when it's hard. It's worth it in the long run

- Don't say anything behind someone's back (in person or online) that you wouldn't say to their face. This is a tough one, but totally worth the effort.

- Love freely and openly and happily and loudly.

- Stop acting like your preferences are somehow universal and objectively correct. If we were all the same there'd only be one flavour of ice cream. People have wildly different like and dislikes. The customer is always right in matter of taste. Let them be.

- Listen to the elderly and the young and everyone in between. The differences in perspective will keep your mind open.

- You have been wrong, you are wrong about something now, and you will be wrong in the future. Just like every other human in the entire history of humanity. You will not spontaneously combust from admitting you're a mere mortal like the rest of us. Make peace with it.

- You are NOT the exception. You're the statistic. Choose accordingly.

I think there's no greater indication that disco elysium is sympathetic towards communism when it literally says "communism is failure" and then the literal gameplay itself rewards trying and failing. The most obvious one being the Shivers check at the FELD mural, which is an Impossible 20 check BUT opens itself up again and again the longer you spend in the world doing things, but even just looking at sheer probabilities, for any given white check, rolling first and THEN putting a point into that skill upon failure is more likely to grant you success than putting a point first and then rolling, but that would require failing first.

Other things too: Precarious world saying you'll 100% fail red checks no matter what (not necessarily a bad thing, btw!! throwing the boule into the sea is a success but like. in some other ways one would want a perfect petanque throw instead. but people wouldn't typically assume that failure is desirable sometimes from the start) persuading you to accept that you'll fail some things that is irrevocable, for a world where everything is just a tiny bit easier.

The faux game over screen when you faint after reading Dora's letter— emulating a sense of failure on the scale of the entire game. When it rolls up most people go "What?? Game over?? No way, what did I do wrong!!" and waking up after that, with no huge or lasting impact on Harry's health or morale really tells the player, "Sometimes things will seem so bad that it all seems like it's coming to an end, but it's not the end, it's really not the end, go drink so water, you can still go on despite this failure"

I'm sure there are other things as well that are eluding me but like. The literal gameplay rewards failing and succeeding far more so than simply succeeding every single time, and I think you get a fuller experience of Elysium that way too
