Ohhhm you're hiding it!? What were you looking at while sighing....? Maybe a message from someone...?
Tumblr media
Pag 3
1: It's everyone's number of laps in the training camp....
2: This year my brother is sending me the electric scoreboard data, so I can see them live. Now they've started the afternoon practice of the second day
Woah, it's true, there's so many numbers. But in that case don't hide and don't sigh
3: The subject and your reaction don't match, Miki
You're really a bicycle otaku, girl!!
4: Ah right, they're all at the training camp now
Yeah, in Shizuoka
5: No wonder I though that that lively red-head isn't here
7: The bike club isn't here
Tumblr media
Pag 4

Tumblr media
Pag 5
1: The third years are looking towards their last Inter High
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pag 8
2: It's curious
3: We ran so many laps and the course is 5km long, and yet these eight people unexpectedly happen to be here at the same time
4: We're still in the middle of the second day, so we don't know what's going to happen, but... if we only talk about the number of laps
5: Then right now there are eight people in the lead!!
6: Or maybe
10: It's not really unexpected?
Tumblr media
Pag 9
1: It's not!!
At least for us!!
3: Kaburagi and Danchiku jumped ahead!!
4: Kaburagi!!
5: Uh.... I heard about it but, consciuosly looking closely at it again.... re-really
Tumblr media
Pag 10
1: Danchiku really has become huge!!
3: I got this bike that's the perfect size for me from Touji-san
5: What's... this... Danchiku's pressure....
6: It's so much higher than before!!
Tumblr media
Pag 11
1: Right now you felt like “Danchiku's pressure has gotten stronger”, right? Sugimoto-san
3: It did get stronger
Honestly
4: Until now we've run more than 400km and his strength has certainly grown...
And it's conveyed 100% with that bike!! He's sure and confident!!
Do you know what that means, Sugimoto-san!?
5: The two of us simply chased Imaizumi-san and the others and ran so to not open the distance again
So, honestly, it was unexpected
Teh!!
6: Kaburagi-san and the others purpousely matched tehir paces with them!?
Tumblr media
Pag 12
1: Kaburagi, Danchiku....!! As expected your target is...!!
2: 400km is a big enough distance that we could make up a special move!!
4: Go!! This is... Danchiku Special Move!!
Tumblr media
Pag 13
1: Bamboo Hop Shot!!
Tumblr media
Pag 14
1: He covered so much distance in an instant!!
2: That huge frame
4: He's accelerating by bending like a bamboo!!
7: That's right, this is the special technique that we made up during this training camp!!
Bamboo is flexible and elastic, and also....
Tumblr media
Pag 15
1: Strong!!
2: Kuaaaaa
Tumblr media
Pag 16
2: Sugimoto reacted alone to Danchiku's acceleration and caught up to them!!
4: As expected, that saves us time, Sugimoto-san
Yeah... the two of us have to go to the Inter High
5: Moreover, we can't play an active part if we don't get stronger in this training camp, and in order for him to fully recover from his slump and go to the Inter High
Tumblr media
Pag 17
1: He has to defeat a human pillar like you, Sugimoto-san!!
3: Their target is Sugimoto!!
4: Huh, Sugimoto-kun!?
Sugimoto!!
5: Huh!?
Uh....
6: I want Danchiku to race you and gain back his confidence, and recover completely!!
Tumblr media
Pag 18
1: You're speaking as if you're assuming I'll lose
2: Assuming? Well-
3: You're being too rude, Issa
Am I? But results are everything in this world
4: Sugimoto-san and...
Danchiku-san....
5: I mean, the fact that you've caught up now means you're “accepting”
6: Just a little more
Until the complete recovery!!
7: Aren't you cute?
Tumblr media
Pag 19
1: My kouhai are recklessly in high spirit and want to practice with a more experienced senpai!!
Alright then!!
I'll let you
2: Come at me, second year Danchiku Ryuhou!!
Wa!! Thanks
Sugimoto-san!!
Tumblr media
Pag 20
2: He accepted it and ran ahead!!
3: Sugimoto is leading!!
4: He's assertive!!
As expected!!
5: It's gonna be challenging, Danchiku!!
6: Ahh, one thing I forgot to say, is that Danchiku's special technique we came up with during this training camp... there's one more thing to it
Tumblr media
Pag 21
1: It's called Bamboo Shout!!
2: I think you'll get to look closely at it later
4: By the way, Sugimoto-san
What about your special technique?
5: Ah...!! My self-awareness isn't that low that I didn't prepare for it!!

What is your favorite nurse joy daydream currently?
I’ve got like 20 at all times because I have OC brainrot and it’s terminal. (I’m not sorry and I love Nurse Joy Kanzaki of Gotham General ER.)
So when I’m driving for three hours to visit my sibling for a weekend I imagine Joy and Jason on a roadtrip and what music they’d listen to or what car snacks they’d each want. When I wake up in my warmest comfiest blanket burrito I imagine Joy trying NOT to remember waking up next to him after their accidental nap because they are NOT dating and she should NOT be thinking of his hand on her hip or how his heartbeat sounded under her ear. When I’m at work my thoughts jump sideways to Rhapsody in his new job, not knowing that Jason and Dick take turns checking up on him and are relieved when he smiles and talks to new coworkers. When I binge-watch tiktok and a funny video or rant from a nurse comes up I imagine how Joy would handle the situation.
And when I get “John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmitt” stuck in my head for three days straight it bleeds into the fandom/OC brainrot and gives me something like this:
His Name is My Name Too
Red Hood met her at the loading dock behind an abandoned grocery store.
It had been abandoned for years after receiving code violations for not being earthquake or hurricane safe. The owner didn’t want to lose money updating it, and kept saying he had plans to bulldoze the whole thing but never did. Then he got caught for other shoddy business practices and was serving time but still owned the property and refused to sell.
Red told her all this while he helped unload groceries and medical supplies from the trunk of her car. He was wearing a domino mask today instead of the helmet. Joy noticed he did that most often when dealing with children. Probably so they could see his facial expressions and not get spooked by the voice modulator.
He helped her set up a folding table and a few camp chairs, then threw a plastic picnic blanket over a section of the loading dock.
“You can sanitize your station on the table while I set up lunch. The kids will be watching us already, but won’t come out until they’re confident we have food and don’t mean harm. I’ll call out the signal when we’re done and they’ll have made the choice to trust us or not by then.”
Joy got to work scrubbing the plastic table with cleaning solution before laying down a brand new vinyl sheet and spraying that down with cleaner as well. She’d been part of community outreach programs for years, helping anyone who needed it to get vaccinated and checked out for minor injuries. She loved signing up for the mobile unit the hospital had, visiting neighborhoods so people who didn't have a car or couldn’t do public transit still had the chance to get medical support. And it was all free to the people that showed up, paid for (once again) by one of Bruce Wayne’s many charities that supported unhoused people and the poorer communities.
Doing this without a whole team and hospital grade equipment felt wrong, but when Red had asked if she’d be willing to help out a crew of homeless kids she said yes without hesitation. It broke her heart, but she also knew why some people refused to show up on the free mobile clinic days. Especially kids.
It was always advertised that no one had to show identification or even give a real name, the free clinic was just here to help, but trust wasn’t something Gothamites had in excess. Taking blood for testing was often refused because “I don’t wanna be put in The System!” and any syringe she pulled out could hold poison instead of the latest flu shot. She’d been accused of trying to implant trackers before, or working for Scarecrow, or for being a Chinese spy. (She didn’t bother trying to correct them by that point that she was half Japanese, not Chinese.)
Any kid that showed up alone usually got questioned by adults waiting in line about their home situation (if they had one) and pressured to talk to the Child Services desk. Gregory never left his chair under the pop-up canopy to approach kids. He stayed still and talked only if they came up to him first. He had a jar of candy he let kids dig through whether or not they wanted his help. Joy had only seen him leave his station once and that was to race over to stop a woman from violently dragging a child toward his desk. It wasn’t her child, and she was escorted away by security.
The kids she was planning to help today already knew Red Hood. He’d been keeping them safe, giving them money and food for months. He said it took that long to convince them he wasn’t playing a long con to traffic them, and they only agreed to her visit after a month of discussions.
And only because her name started with a J.
When she asked Red why that mattered he just smiled and said, “you’ll see.”
Now that all her easy-to-travel-with medical supplies were lined up and sanitized alongside the medicines Red had brought (she didn’t ask if he purchased them or not, hospitals had theft insurance) she looked over to see him sitting on the loading dock about ten feet away from the picnic, swinging his legs and whistling.
He’d said they were being watched, so his relaxed posture must be for show. Joy didn’t catch any eyes peeking out of shadows, but a crew of street kids this paranoid would know how to spy without getting caught.
She sat in one of the camp chairs to wait, knowing it might take a while, and listened to Red. He had a strong whistle. Clear and controlled. The tune was easy to recognize but he drew out the notes slowly, tossing in some bird-like warbles for fun. It was nice to see him relax. He didn’t get enough time for that.
Then he stopped, smiled sideways at a rusty dumpster and jumped off the loading dock to stand tall and sang out the words of his song.
“John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmitt!!”
“His name is my name too,” several voices responded from different directions, and Joy had to force herself not to jump.
Five kids melted out of the shadows. It was hard to tell their ages with how many layers of clothing they wore, but she would guess four of them were between fourteen and sixteen, and the fifth was likely seven or eight.
“Hey kids!” Hood smiled at each, “Thanks for coming out today. This is my friend Joy, she’s a nurse at Gotham General and is really good at her job.”
The two oldest walked over and said hello while the other three went straight to the food. It was all pre-packaged still-sealed items that were easy to eat with your hands. Red had given her the money and shopping list a couple days ago with very specific instructions.
“Like when I brought you food in the hospital,” she’d commented, after reading through it all. His responding grin had been a little brittle.
“Every street kid learns not to trust food that can be tampered with. A warm meal isn’t worth the risk of getting drugged.”
Joy said hello back to the kids and explained what her plans were in detail, showing off the medicines and equipment, answering their questions, and clearly stating she would never touch them without permission or steal their dna for evil science.
That last bit was in response to the youngest asking questions through a mouthful of barbecue potato chips.
They were all quiet, polite, listened to her every word seriously, and never stood close enough to each other that two could be grabbed at once. The crew wordlessly rotated who kept an eye on each adult, and who got to shovel food into their mouths. They’d been taking care of each other for a while.
“So while I’m here, what names do you want me to call you?” she deliberately asked this way so they would know she was expecting fake names, and wouldn’t be able to report them to the authorities.
“John,” one raised his fist in the air, holding a bag of twizzlers while the free hand returned to shoving a turkey sandwich in his mouth.
“Jacob,” the oldest looking one said, also raising a hand.
“Jingle!!” the youngest shouted happily, holding both hands up.
“Jaime,” he said, raising a hand to give her a salute.
“Smith,” said the last, pumping his fist in the air like he was fist bumping the sky. Joy didn’t try to hide her delighted smile at their names, but didn’t get to comment before Smith continued, “My full name is John Smith, but Other John was here first, so I’m just Smith.”
“You coulda picked a new name like me and Jaime,” Jingle shrugged at him.
“You didn’t pick yours!” Jacob frowned at the child, “We gave it to you after you stole that Santa’s bell outside the Walmart last Christmas!”
“Well I chose to keep it!”
“You stole a bell?” Red cut in. He’d also come over to sit down. “Wouldn’t that be hard to conceal with all the noise?”
“The noise was the point!” Jingle smiled broadly, showing a couple adult teeth that were just barely starting to poke through the gums.
“Jingle made enough distraction with the bell,” John said, nodding, “That I could steal Santa’s pot of cash.”
Red whistled in appreciation, “That’s a good score.”
“Thanks,” John said, but he was looking at Joy like he expected something. Suddenly all five of the kids were staring at her from their own positions around the table. Three standing, two seated, but she was surrounded.
“Did you have a question for me?” she asked calmly, ignoring the shiver down her spine.
“You gonna judge us for stealing Santa’s money?”
“Nope.”
“You honest?” The question sounded like a threat.
“Yep.”
The silence stretched as they stared. They were waiting for her to prove it. Even Red was watching her, lips pressed together to prevent a smile. She explained her thoughts just as she had the medicines.
“Every Santa ringing a bell outside a Walmart in Gotham works for the Salvation Army because Walmart is the only store that lets them use their properties around here. Smaller local stores collect donations for different Wayne charities cuz this is Gotham and people born here know Wayne actually helps people. Unlike the Salvation Army that’s transphobic and homophobic and only helps people they think are good enough but then give the least amount of effort before kicking you back to the curb for asking too many questions or snoring or wanting to keep your dog. But you all look pretty smart to me, so I bet you knew that when you planned your mark, huh? I’m not gonna judge you for taking Santa’s money, not just cuz I hate the Salvation Army, but because that money is supposed to help people who need it. And you needed it.”
Five feral smiles flashed her way before the tension broke and the kids returned to eating.
“Yeah, she’s a good J,” Jacob said, glancing between Joy and Red approvingly.
“Told ya so,” Red smiled back.
“My name’s Joy, not Jay,” she reminded the kid. Jacob snorted.
“We’re all J’s here,” he said and counted on his fingers as he listed everyone off. “John, Jacob, Jingle, Jaime, and even Smith’s first name is a J.”
Jaime leaned forward in the camp chair and wiped mustard off his mouth before saying, “It took them forever to believe Jaime started with a J and not an H. Had to teach them more Spanish words that sound different from what they’re spelled to make them believe me.”
“Like jalapeño,” Jingle nodded sagely.
“Both of you are J’s too,” Jacob continued like he hadn’t been interrupted. “That’s why we’re trusting you.”
Joy’s eyes went wide as her head snapped to stare at Red, then back to Jacob.
“Red Hood told you his name?!”
Red let out a bark of laughter, but Jacob answered her.
“Nah. He just said it starts with a J. We don’t know what his name is but we believe him cuz he never lied to us yet, which is why we all agreed to meet you too. And now we know you’re a good J. Good J’s take care of each other.”
The mind of a child was a fascinating thing.
These five kids were paranoid and clever, aware of every movement and watching every exit, careful of who they met and judging every word she spoke, looking for flaws and traps. But they also had that spark of whimsy - the thing that makes children latch onto arbitrary rules just because it doesn’t hurt. Because they found something as small as a letter of the alphabet to share when they had nothing else but each other.
“So… you’re going to let me stick you with needles and promise to brush your teeth because my name starts with a J and I’m nice?”
They each made noises of agreement.
“It’s like Jacob said,” John grinned around two twizzlers hanging from the corner of his mouth. “We’re all J’s here, and Good J’s take care of each other because -”
He twisted his wrist like he was going to bow, and all five sang in unison:
“His name is my name too.”

「 aquarium date + first kiss with a shy!s/o: marine bio club 」
a/n: ahh thank you for liking the pale blue and also requesting!! and ofc ofc i love them, i hope i at least can make you smile with this! and the words are around 1.8k if im not wrong but still! im sorry that it gets shorter toward the end anonn
pairings: shinkai kanata, hakaze kaoru, kanzaki souma x shy!reader (seperate)
Tumblr media
↬ there wasn’t much of a crowd the day you and kanata went to your aquarium date. maybe even the universe wanted for you two to be off in your own little world, not like the both of you haven’t done so. shinkai was the one who asked you out on a date shortly after you were officially announced as a couple.
☆ walking along the entrance of the aquarium, your eyes immediately brightened up in amusement. it’s been a long time since you visited an aquarium so to have kanata bring you here is perfect. “the aquarium looks nice right? looking at the fish heals me.” he said. you nodded in response, excitement awaits you the more you stepped into the place. all of a sudden, a hand holds out toward your direction.
“h-huh?” by his sudden gesture, you find yourself quite flustered. but not wanting to let kanata wait, you timidly placed your hand over him. he intertwined it with a smile flashed at you. “hehe, now we won’t lose each other.” with that said, you walked to your first exhibition, holding hands with your blue haired boyfriend.
↬ watching how his eyes lit up, the way his mouth curved upward by bits, how he interacts with the marine life inside the humongous tank and how they responded to him so naturally, having your first date at an aquarium truly is the perfect way to start off your relationship.
☆ although that doesn’t mean you’re the only one who feels this. kanata loves how amazed you’re at each marine life you saw, how intently you listened to his words about some fishes and also the way you giggle happily because a guppy swimmed to you from your calls. it would be nice if he can take a picture of you right now, sadly his phone is now being repaired.
well it’s alright then, kanata will just save this sight of you in his mind, he’ll make sure he keeps it well. the sight of you waving at his sea friends with a warm smile on your face, blue shades of lighting surrounding you was more than enough for him to never let himself forget this moment.
↬ it’s a shame that you were already nearing the end of the aquarium, your pace had gotten slower as you lightly swinged your hand which was intertwined with kanata’s. the blue haired stopped on his track, pointing to a flapjack octopus, “that’s flapjack octopus, cute right?” he remembered some days before that you wanted to see said octopus in real life. kanata is glad you seemed to forget that their sweet first date is coming to an end, he doesn’t want to see you sad anymore.
☆ your eyes widened slightly at the rare sight of the octopus, you were so excited to be able to see it for the first time. he lets go of your hand and told you to go up closer, you were such a mysterious being, in a lovely way. for him now, seeing you happy is the best view than seeing any other sea friends of his happy!
while kanata too, doesn’t know where his impulse came from but he took a glance at you. without any warnings, he leaned in straight without hesitation until his lips met yours. you frozened up at your place, obviously startled by it. remember how earlier you said you were quite flustered? now you’re beyond flustered.
“ka- kanata.. you..” poor you, too surprised to even say a coherent sentence. you didn’t make an effort to hide the growing shades of roses on your cheek.
“did you.. not like it? maybe that was too sudden.. I’m sorry.” if it wasn’t for the fact that you can easily notice changes on his expression, no one would know that he feels guilty and gloomy for his love gesture just now.
you panicked at your sad lover and his misunderstanding, “wait kanata no! I, I like it very much!” the moment you realized what you just blurted out, you were sure your face was akin to a tomato.
kanata cracked a smile on his face as he replied to your words of assurement, “ehe, I like it very much too.” oh dear, he’s too dangerous for your poor and timid heart. except you won’t mind him making your heart palpitates out of love.
Tumblr media
↬ when he heard that you’ve been wanting to go to aquarium, kaoru was quick to plan a perfect aquarium date in his mind. he was so eager to make you think this was one of the best date you’ve ever gone to but at the same time he’s panicking. sure, kaoru has gone on a few dates at the aquarium but this is you! he’s going on an aquarium date with you! he wants to make it more special!
☆ you looked at your watch and wondered if ever your lover will come to the date. did he suddenly have work to do? just when you were about to call him, a rushed footsteps could be heard from afar.
“soー sorry.. I was too caught upー” he stopped his words the moment you caressed his back as a way to tell him to calm down. before he explains whatever reason it was for his late arrival, you told him to catch his breath first. besides, the mini bouquet he’s gripping seems to give out the answer.
↬ you took out your phone to take a selfie of you and the scenery of the marine life swimming around. despite being shy to ask kaoru to be in the selfie along with you, you asked him, “hey kaoru, do you want to take a selfie together?”
☆ without any thinking made, kaoru took your request positively. happily if I must point it out. he bent himself down to fit into your camera, the close proximity maybe did make your ears red. it’ll be nice if kaoru didn’t see your reddening ears. “one.. two..” and on the count of three, you clicked the button.
you thought the picture would probably look nice if it weren't for the fact that kaoru suddenly kissed your cheek when your finger clicked the button. now the only thing you’re thinking of is how red you must be from the abrupt kiss. in some way, kaoru is thankful that you’re hiding your face from him or you would’ve seen just how he’s more flustered even if he’s the one who initiates it.
↬ around the exit for the aquarium, there was a souvenirs shop. kaoru took a plushie of a sea animal that he remembered you saying is your favorite and rushed to you who’s waiting outside the shop after he paid for it.
☆ he took a few seconds before calling out to you, let the guy soften down when he saw you pat the small bouquet he bought for you. if you’re going to smile that way whenever he gives you a small bouquet then kaoru is willing to do it everyday.
and if your smile gets as cheerful and happy as this, if your eyes will brighten up more than ever akin to a star, then he will buy you lots and lots of plushies. a gift from kaoru to you; so that he’ll always be in your mind. just like you never leaving his. so out of the spur of the moment, he asked if he can kiss you. you looked up to meet his eyes and before kaoru could say anything about his question to not let you feel uncomfortable, you answered with a yes. take the lead kaoru, your s/o is letting you kiss him.
kaoru probably had created many different scenarios of your first kiss but outside of an aquarium souvenir shop is not one of them. vacant of people around them, you took this rare chance to put away your things, hold kaoru’s forearms, tiptoe on your feet and left a 5 seconds kiss on his lips. after constantly being on the teased side, seeing your boyfriend so flustered with love was fun. the kiss felt sweet too. not like you were any better. this was the first time you’ve ever done that.
Tumblr media
↬ how do you go to an aquarium date? usually in an aquarium, souma will just walk around, admiring and studying the marine life inside the tank. but what if you thought that was boring? this is a date, while he’s content with just walking around with you beside him, talking about all the sea lifes.. what about you? and despite him being embarrassed, he lowered his pride and asked for help from the people around him. (his akatsuki senpais gives really good advice! as expected of them!)
☆ at the first place, when you caught hints of souma worrying over if you’ll feel content with just walking around with him, you almost snorted. really, what was he mulling about, just knowing that you’re going to be with him is enough to make a bashful smile up your face. now that you and him are dating, you really wish he would know that and you’ll tell him that during your awaited aquarium date.
fast-forward to when the two of you were already inside the date location. just before you and souma started venturing into the place full of sea lifes, you found yourself holding your breath when you asked the purple haired, “do you.. want to hold hands?” souma wants to hold hands with you too! he wants even if he was inexperienced with affections. and he would never wish to see you disappointed.
for the greater, we’ll just feign ignorance to the growing blush on the both of you.
↬ you were doing exactly what he thought would make you feel bored but the joyous expression you have says otherwise. souma glanced at his hand which hasn’t left yours since then, your hand in his was perfect. like it was meant to be holding one another. the nervousness he felt while starting his day today was subdued by the time you’ve spent with him.
☆ “um.. souma?” he responded to your call almost immediately with a voice that seemed more warm than before. you turned your head toward him and looked straight in his light purple eyes, “you see, it doesn’t matter where or how, as long as I’m with you, I’ll always be happy with that.”
ending your words, you instantly looked elsewhere. souma never expected you to mutter those words to him, he appreciates you for that. you were right and that fact goes the same way with him. souma also loves how shy you become after saying those kinds of things, it makes his heart swell with adoration. the hand holding yours was tightening his hold yet it feels more calm.
↬ somewhere in the aquarium, tucked from public’s eyes, souma with his face covered in pretty red was still in disbelief. your lover being in such a situation, it helps soothe your own bashfulness too.
☆ with souma, he always makes sure to have your consent first before doing anything. that goes the same with kisses, more precisely a first kiss. he was surprised with himself too from his own little selfish request but there was this urge to lay a kiss on your lips. “may.. I kiss you?” he said, requested, asked, whatever it is, the only answer you’ll give will never change.
and again, somewhere in the aquarium, tucked from public’s eyes, souma cupped your cheek with one hand and leaned in. the process was slow, he looked into your eyes with his face dusted of rose shades. the kiss also felt long despite lasting for a quick 3 seconds.

My Favorite Girl
Finally wrote an InoAoi fic! I hope you enjoy!
~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was dark. Snow was falling softly outside. The Butterfly Mansion was quiet, since its residents were asleep. Or rather, most of them.
Aoi Kanzaki was enjoying a moment alone after a very long work day. Winter had come, and with it an outbreak of viral illness in the village nearby. Up until now, Aoi had been constantly busy with ailing patients. She’d hardly even had the time to greet Tanjirou, Nezuko, Zenitsu, and Inosuke, who had come to visit.
Presently, Aoi sat down by the kotatsu with a thick blanket around her shoulders, drinking a hot cup of tea and watching the snow fall outside. Just a bit alone time, she told herself, then I’ll turn in for the night.
However, her solitude wasn’t to last. She heard the shuffling of tired feet before she saw who owned them. Inosuke trudged into the room, his eyes half-lidded and sleepy. “Hey.”
“Hey.” Aoi replied, arching an eyebrow as Inosuke plopped down next to her. “Do you need something?”
“Nah.” Inosuke yawned. “‘ ‘S just chilly in here.”
Maybe if you actually wore a shirt, Aoi wanted to retort, but she decided against it.
Meanwhile, Inosuke could observe that Aoi wasn’t as cold as he was, so he scooted closer to her until their shoulders were touching.
Aoi tensed slightly, feeling an all too familiar blush creeping onto her face. “You know where the extra blankets are.”
“Yeah.” Aoi felt Inosuke shrug. “But you’ve been holed up in the medical ward all day. I’ve hardly gotten to talk to you yet.” I missed you, was what Inosuke might’ve said, had he not conditioned himself to never admit something that might sound needy. He turned to look at her again, and Aoi saw his brows furrow in confusion.
“What?”
“You’ve got Kanao-Face.”
Aoi turned fully to him now. “I beg your pardon?”
“You’re all pink here.” Inosuke gestured at his face. “I know you can’t be sunburned in this weather, and I can’t sense any sickness. You’re doin’ that thing Kanao used to do. Y’know, when she thought Tanjirou wasn’t lookin’? She’d look at him and get Kanao-Face.”
Aoi sighed. In the privacy of her own mind, she could admit that she’d had a special fondness for Inosuke for many months now, as dense and bullish as he could be. This had led to him noticing her embarrassed blushing a few times, and he never failed to comment on it. “I’m surprised you’re not calling it ‘Zenitsu-Face’.” she finally said, completely dodging the accusation. “He blushes way more than Kanao does.”
Inosuke shook his head. “Zenitsu-Face is different. His face goes completely red, like a tomato. It makes him look like an idiot.”
Aoi stifled a laugh at this, shaking her head in amusement. Because of this, she didn’t notice that Inosuke was still looking at her, almost thoughtfully. On top of that, he’d gotten a touch of ‘Kanao-Face’ himself, and he didn’t know why. For a few months now, Inosuke too had noticed he felt different around Aoi. He’d chalked it up to her being his “favorite girl”, but somehow it felt like there was still something missing; something he didn’t yet understand. And for some reason, not understanding frustrated him. A lot.
“Hey, Aoi?” Inosuke broke the short silence, surprising Aoi that he’d gotten her name right on the first try. “Speaking of Kanao… Is Kanao Tanjirou’s favorite girl?”
Aoi looked at him strangely. “Besides Nezuko, I guess.”
“That’s different, though. Nezuko is Tanjirou’s kid sister.” Inosuke glared at the floor, his cluelessness beginning to irritate him again. What made it different, exactly? Well, there were things Tanjirou did with only Kanao, like… “If someone has a favorite girl, does that mean they love her?”
Aoi nodded slowly, still unsure of what Inosuke was getting at.
“Then…” Inosuke turned fully to Aoi, no longer hiding his ‘Kanao-Face’. “Since you’re my favorite girl, does that mean I love you?”
Aoi’s eyes went wide. Her heart began thump, thump, thumping. For a few moments she was lost for words. After a few moments of staring, mouth agape, she managed to croak. “I dunno… Do you?”
Inosuke thought about it. He thought he loved a lot of things. Fighting and food, for example. And yet, what he felt for Aoi felt like that and more. “Yeah… I think I do. I, uh, think I love ya, Aoi.” He didn’t understand why it was so hard to say. It seems so easy for Monjirou and Monitsu…
Testing to see if it felt right, Inosuke mimicked something else Tanjirou did, one last time, leaning forward and giving Aoi a quick peck on the forehead, which left her stunned. He sat still, waiting for her response and resisting the urge to poke fun at her quickly-evolving ‘Zenitsu-Face’. But then, he noticed tears brimming in the corners of her eyes. Aw, man, I messed it up!
But then, with speed that frankly impressed Inosuke, Aoi suddenly dove forward, throwing her arms around him. “You dummy!” she cried, and yet her voice sounded utterly delighted.
Hesitantly and a bit awkwardly, Inosuke rested his hands on Aoi’s back. “Whatcha cryin’ for?”
“I’m not crying!” Aoi protested, not lifting her face from his chest to prove it.
Inosuke frowned a bit grumpily at that answer. “Yeah you are. Did I… hurt your feelings?”
“No!” Aoi looked up at him, wiping her eyes. “What made you think that?”
“I dunno…” Inosuke rubbed the back of his neck. “I just… didn’t know how to say what I wanted to say, y’know? I thought I said the wrong thing.”
Aoi smiled, a bit charmed. He could be really sweet on the inside, even without meaning to. To reassure him, she gathered the courage to kiss his cheek. “You didn’t. I’m proud of you. These are just happy tears. I’m happy because I love you too…” Her voice became uncharacteristically small at the end as she averted her eyes, still a little embarrassed.
Inosuke blinked, a bit surprised at her answer, before grinning slightly. “Heh.” Not much of a response, but it was all he could come up with at the moment.
What a profound effect they had on each other.
                                                          Miki
The crisp, chill morning air bit through Miki’s jacket. Repressing a shiver, she declined her older brother’s suggestion to wait inside the store, and they watched the delivery truck driver park his vehicle. As the engine’s rumbling died, she glanced at the dull, dark bags underneath Kanzaki’s eyes.
Catching her look, he hummed a questioning note. His toothpick bobbed as he readjusted it between his lips.
She shook her head and smiled. He seemed satisfied with that and turned away, which she was grateful for. After voicing her worries about him numerous times, as well as hearing his excuses, she didn’t want to try again in front of the driver.
“Morning, Koga,” Kanzaki greeted the broad-shouldered man, who slid out of his seat and shut the vehicle’s door behind him.
“Good morning!” Miki pulled her hands out of her pockets and rubbed them together.
“Morning,” he returned. Keys jingling in his hand, he headed to the back of the truck. “I didn’t expect to see you here, Miki.”
“Normally I’d still be asleep. School doesn’t start for another two hours.”
“She’s staying here until Onoda’s mom picks her up. I told the kids that no one’s allowed to walk alone on the streets, even if it’s just a short distance,” Kanzaki explained.
“Because of the missing kids?” When Kanzaki nodded, Koga unlocked the trunk and continued. “It’s always good to be safe, but I wouldn’t worry too much. It’s been a long time since the green-haired kid went missing, and the news said the recent two ran away.”
Miki stayed silent. She had noticed that Onoda still thought about Teshima and Aoyagi’s absence often despite having hardly known the two.
Kanzaki joined Koga and observed the boxes they needed to unload. “Just because they were orphans doesn’t mean they ran away,” he muttered, and Miki just barely heard the words from where she stood by the propped open store door.
“But it is common for them to do that,” Koga reminded.
“…well, whatever happened, it’s always good to be safe. Like you said.” Kanzaki’s voice sounded tight, and his jaw clenched. Then he winced and spat his now bent toothpick into his palm.
“You’re going to ruin your teeth chewing on those things. Are you all right?” Koga questioned.
“Yeah.” He patted his pockets. “Ah, man. Must have left my box of ‘em inside.”
“I’ll get them,” Miki insisted. She was growing restless from the conversation, so she thrust her hand out to him.
He hesitated, glanced at Koga, and then dropped the toothpick into her waiting hand. “Okay. I bet they’re on the counter.”
She nodded and turned on her heel. As they started grabbing boxes, she walked inside and tossed the plastic into a trash can. It fell and joined the other bent toothpicks littering the bottom.
Entering the storefront, she stepped behind the counter. The fluorescent lights buzzed quietly. Since the store wasn’t open yet, the building was devoid of customers.
She spotted the box of toothpicks sitting on the far side on the counter; he had been sweeping earlier and must have absentmindedly set it down there.
As she reached for it, a light thunk and rattle made her jump. Whirling her head around, she stared at an unopened bottle of pills on the floor. A shelf above it had an empty space.
Releasing a nervous laugh to herself, she turned back to her goal and grasped the box. The bottle had probably been sitting on the edge this whole time, and it finally chose to fall. She should put it back before customers arrived.
Miki idly drug her hand along the counter as she walked to the open side of the counter.
Her fingers suddenly encountered wetness. Surprised, she brought her hand up to her face. Slick red shone on her fingertips.
Did I hurt myself…?
She checked the counter. A small streak of blood painted the surface where she had touched it.
Grabbing a roll of paper towels near the register, she ripped off one and wiped her hand. Then she inspected her fingers. There were no cuts or marks marring the skin.
“Am I seeing things?”
She hadn’t spoken.
Jumping, she choked on a gasp. Her heart thumped painfully in her chest, and her pulse skyrocketed when she saw her own face looking back at her.
The other Miki smiled, the corners of its lips stretching unnaturally far upward. “I sure hope I’m not crazy!” it declared, pitch a perfect imitation of Miki’s.
“W-What…?”
“You know. Craaaazy!” It twirled a finger beside its ear. The purple fabric of its sweatshirt morphed into sterile white. The sleeves elongated to cover its hands and, as if the newly formed strait jacket had a mind of its own, yanked the other Miki’s arms to its opposite sides. The sound of shoulders popping reverberated throughout the store.
Miki’s breath caught in her throat. Horror scattered coherent thought, and she squeezed her eyes shut.
Stop stop stop, this isn’t happening, this isn’t real, when I look it’s going to be gone. Pain sparked in her scalp as her trembling fingers fisted in her hair. I’m dreaming I have to be wake up wakeupwakeupwakeup—
A resounding slap echoed in her hears. Eyes snapping open, she saw that the other now sported a large red mark across one cheek. The outline looked eerily similar to that of her father’s hand.
“Ow! …guess I better get used to that, huh?” It took a step forward.
Miki scrambled backward, and her back hit the covered shelves behind her. Terrified tears burned at the corners of her eyes. She opened her mouth to scream, but a strip of the strait jacket flew off and plastered to her nose and mouth.
Oxygen abruptly cut off, she dug her fingers into the fabric and pulled. The cloth refused to budge.
The monster grinned, revealing yellow, razor-sharp teeth in a mouth far too big for a human face. The strait jacket tightened. Bones audibly creaked under the pressure. Yet it started walking forward, and with each step she heard sickening snaps.
Growing lightheaded, the girl fell to her knees. Among the dark splotches in her vision she saw a familiar rounded object built into the underneath of the counter.
She rapidly beat the store’s panic button. The monster’s giggling, a hellish amalgamation of her voice and otherworldly rasp, grew closer and closer. Blurry gaze on the floor tiles, she saw the creature’s shadow peek over the counter.
Then, the next thing she knew, the cloth on her mouth dissolved. Her mouth sucked in a hasty breath that ached in her throat and chest, but she was too grateful for the sweet oxygen’s return to care. Other than her ragged panting, silence blanketed the building.
Her muscles tensed when footsteps returned, but then they were accompanied by Kanzaki’s distressed “Miki!”
Kanzaki knelt down beside her, eyes wide and searching for injuries. “Are you okay? Are you hurt?”
Tears slid down her cheeks. “I-I-I…I s-saw…”
“What did you see?”
Toji didn’t see it. Had it left before he got there? Or…had it all been in her head…?
“Craaaazy!”
Like jumping into the ocean during winter, an icy wave enveloped her body. She drew her knees up to her chest, and a violent shiver racked her frame.
“I’m here, Miki. It’s just us. Can you tell me what happened?” The warmth of the hand he placed upon her shoulder scorched through her sweatshirt.
“…o-outside.” She swallowed, throat tight and dry against the lies leaving her lips. “There was…someone scary. In front of the d-door. I thought it was dangerous.”
His taut posture—she hadn’t even noticed how on edge he had been—loosened, but his concern remained. “You’re sure it was a person?”
As she nodded, police sirens blared in the distance.
Miki cringed. “Th-The police are coming here. I pressed the alarm button, so...”
“Don’t worry. They’re not going to think any more about us after we give a statement—”
Shifting forward, she buried her face into his shoulder and dug her fingers into his shirt. He wrapped his arms around her and, even after the officers arrived, he kept a hand on her shoulder.
The police questioning, finishing with unloading—despite being thrown off schedule, Koga was understanding—and opening the store passed by in a blur. Yet she never stopped moving. Before she knew it, she found herself halfway through rearranging every single item in the store into perfect order. Labels facing forward, price tags under correct objects, the bargain bin as organized as it had ever been. Whenever a customer entered she’d greet them and plaster on a smile.
At first her brother insisted she rest and not go to school today, both of which she curtly disagreed to. So he let her be. He did express confusion and worry over the blood smeared on the counter, but she assured him it wasn’t hers, and he cleaned it up no less puzzled.
Her phone buzzed incessantly in her pocket. She ignored it and turned around a box of candies.
She’d see them soon, away from this store where she saw—
No.
No, she didn’t see that.
She saw a man. Or woman. A person. A definite human who was standing outside the door and freaked her out. Nothing came inside the store.
Nothing.
The door opened again. When Miki turned around, she saw Miyahara and Kuroda walking in. They were college students and not supposed to work today, but Kanzaki called them in to mind the store so he could walk Miki to school. It was nearing lunchtime already.
After letting the pair settle in, she and Kanzaki headed out. He stirred up a chat with her and, despite the forced merriness in her responses, he seemed satisfied enough that she could handle going to school. Naturally he made sure to ask her one more time if she really wanted to go, though.
Once they arrived he walked her to the door. After shifting her backpack on her shoulders and waving, Miki went inside started down the hallway.
Four familiar voices echoed from an adjacent hall she was approaching. Within the next few moments her friends turned the corner and, upon seeing her, scrambled to her side.
They barraged her with questions. Then Aya, grabbing Miki’s hand, told the rest to back off and let her breathe. Miki gratefully squeezed the other’s fingers.
Kanzaki had texted them earlier about what happened, and online articles had been posted about the event. Yet she knew they wanted to hear it from her mouth, so she told them.
Told them about the scary strange person outside of the store’s door.
Her voice trembled once, but she felt oddly numb. When she finished they were equal parts relived she was okay and grimly deliberative.
“…the police…are they going to say anything to your parents?” Onoda tentatively asked.
Miki stilled.
“They’re not getting you back!” Naruko insisted.
Manami frowned, the rare expression furrowing his brow and dissipating his usual airy demeanor. “You said the door was locked, and the others were at the back door. Your parents can’t claim that Toji left you in danger.”
Miki released an uneven breath. “Y-Yeah. Uh, the police didn’t say they would tell them, so…”
“Then that means everything’s okay,” Aya asserted. They all knew Miki’s situation: she was living with her older brother, but he wasn’t her legal guardian. That honor belonged to her parents. Because they refused to hand over custody of her—her father had to keep face as a member of the neighboring city’s police department—they made a deal with Kanzaki a year ago: as long as he was “competent,” she could live with him.
They still made jabs about Kanzaki’s “crazy phase” in high school. How he was found in the woods, knee decimated and pouring blood, and spouted incoherent ramblings of a horrid creature. Whispers of “poor boy” and “not right in the head” followed him for weeks until he rescinded his story.
Honestly, Miki still didn’t know what happened back then. Whatever it was, if she showed a hint of instability, it would be all too easy for her parents to say Kanzaki was affecting her mental health…
Aya gave her a side-hug, anchoring her to the present. “It’s lunchtime, you know. We were going to sneak out and check on you.”
Miki slid an arm around the other. She reveled in the closeness and the safety it offered. “Then that means we’re all starving.” She pulled away, and the heavy fears weighing down her shoulders lessened just enough for her to give a genuine, if small smile. “Let’s go eat!”
Everyone’s mood collectively lightened. Stomachs growling, they hurried to the lunchroom and got in line. As expected, they were the last ones, so when they all received their meals they looked around for the last open seats.
Onoda pointed at a table near a back, and then another toward the side. “I only see two spots big enough for all of us.”
The first spot was where Imaizumi sat alone, surrounded by empty chairs. Miki wasn’t too surprised; she recalled that even when he did sit with others he never kept up conversation or showed active interest.
“What, near that hotshot?” Naruko tsked and crossed his arms. But when he glanced at the other area, he already knew what they would choose.
After all, the second spot was right beside Midousuji’s group. No one messed with Midousuji or his allies. Unlike the typical bullies, they didn’t go out of their way to attack others—unless they had a goal to achieve. Whoever interfered with those goals was cruelly and swiftly dealt with, whether it be through Doubashi’s crushing punches or Midousuji’s cunning plans. Mizuta, Doubashi, and Komari followed the lanky, unnerving student with remarkable dedication.
The oldest member, Ishigaki, knew how to curb the group’s worst tendencies. Unlike the others, he was a friendly and mature presence. No one could figure out why he stuck by Midousuji’s side.
Aya huffed. “I’m not sitting beside them, especially with that traitor.”
They all knew who she was referring to: Midousuji’s recruit, their former friend Sugimoto. Said teenager was turned away from them where he conversed with Ishigaki.
Instead of betrayal, Miki shared a forlorn look with Onoda and Manami. There had to be a reason why Sugimoto left her and her friends, but she didn’t know what it was. One day, a couple months ago, he had just stopped talking with them and started hanging out with Midousuji’s crew.
She led the way to Imaizumi and pulled out the seat beside him. When he looked up in confusion, she only grinned amiably and sat down. Aya sat down beside her while Onoda and Manami sat across. Naruko grumbled something under his breath before sitting next to Onoda.
“I didn’t say you all could sit here?” Imaizumi pointed out, but he sounded more bewildered accusing.
“We sure as hell aren’t sitting next to Midousuji.” Aya pierced a steamed carrot with her fork and took a bite.
Imaizumi sighed. “Fair enough.”
Manami sipped at his juice box and set it down. “How’s your day going?”
“Fine. Not too thrilled about later, since I’m no good at painting.”
Miki turned her head to him. “Oh, that’s right. You’re in my art class.”
“I wish I was good at art.” Onoda chimed in. “There are so many good fanartists! I’ve commissioned a few for Love Hime characters.”
A sly look crossed Naruko’s features. “Oh, really? And what kind of poses did ask for, hm?”
Red colored the bespectacled teenager’s face, and he waved his hands defensively. “J-Just normal things! Like running or doing a victory sign.”
“What about kabedon? It’s still pretty popular,” Imaizumi offhandedly remarked, and he raised his water bottle to his lips.
“Kabedon…” Naruko softly repeated, as if he was coming to an important realization.
“That thing where you pin someone against the wall,” Aya added, tone matching his.
Manami hummed. “Yep. Onoda told us he sees it in a lot of fanart too.”
Aya and Naruko’s gazes snapped to Imaizumi. “You’re a nerd?!” They simultaneously exclaimed.
Imaizumi choked on his drink. While he coughed and spluttered, Miki hid her giggles behind her hand. Onoda was practically sparkling with glee.
She was glad she came to school.
--
In art class, Miki placed her backpack beside an empty chair at Imaizumi’s table. Instead of commenting on it, he waited for her, and then they headed into the classroom’s large supply closet.
Many half-finished canvases sat on a shelf. She maneuvered around a student to reach her own piece. After carefully grabbing it, she turned to see Imaizumi walking to the backmost shelf where a single covered canvas lay.
Or rather, mostly covered. Someone must have bumped against it, if the corner peeking out from underneath white cloth was any indication.
Even if she couldn’t see the talented brush strokes, which used swipes of gray, green, and brown to recreate the old tunneled railroad tracks in town, she could tell by how respectfully Imaizumi re-covered it that it was Aoyagi’s incomplete artwork.
Silent, she watched him then pick up his own painting and followed him back into the main classroom. They spent the rest of the period working and talking. At one point she asked him if he’d like to hang out with her and the others that afternoon. He hesitated and said that Naruko would surely dislike that, but he relented amusedly upon hearing her respond with “he’ll get over it.”
