Re your anons: This is purely anecdotal so feel free to dismiss it if you want but my parents (who aren't queer but had a lot of queer friends through their political leanings and activism all through the 70s) when asked, say they and their friends thought Mike Farrell was possibly queer not just because he was involved in queer politics etc but because of his turn as BJ. The moustache I think plays into it more than the clothes for them but in their words "the way he dressed on TV helped". Anyway I agree I dont think it was on purpose (although I don't think anyone was claiming that he was) but there is a difference between queer fans seeing queer coding in a character and any kind of... profiling. Its fine if you don't see it, but it's there for a LOT of people
I would prefer something more direct, just because I think this is interesting, but I know that's almost impossible to find, so I'll take this, lol. My mom watched mash when it aired, but as I've mentioned before, her memory is awful, so I can't ask her about it. Based on how she's reacted to other things, I don't think she would get gay vibes from BJ, but she was also in college when mash ended and didn't really spend a lot of time around openly gay people until grad school.
I agree that there is a difference, and I hope I didn't give the impression that I was equating the two, but I've recently observed a sort of... interest, I guess, in "clocking" both fictional characters and other real queer people as queer, from queer communities online, and I am personally not comfortable with it. I'm not saying it's wrong (although I do think people could stand to be a bit more thoughtful about it, particularly where real people are concerned) but it's something I'm not comfortable with, because it reminds me emotionally of what I experienced homophobes doing. My experiences are not universal, but obviously it's going to affect how I personally approach things. I'm also as a queer fan just not as interested in looking for queer coding as a lot of tumblr fandom is. That's okay, it's one of the many ways I don't quite fit in with fandom culture (I'm really just here because the way I respond to certain media is closer to that than the average casual viewer).
I think if I were watching mash in the 70s when there was less textually queer media available I might have been more interested in looking for queer coding, but it's 2022 so if I want a gay story I just pick one up. My interest in mash is entirely unrelated to queerness anyway; it's a fun bonus and I do choose to interpret Hawkeye as bisexual (which was also not on purpose, though there is some queer subtext early on that I believe is intentional) but I would like mash just as much if it had no queer subtext at all. Although in fandom, if queer subtext doesn't exist it's invented, which is fine but again not to my interests.
If I was hanging out with gay men during the 80s when mustaches were wildly popular I probably would also have said, at least as a joke, that BJ reminded me of them. I think it would kind of like when characters in old media talk about having a gay old time, or say "queer" to mean "strange." Like, I know the cultural context this belongs in is different, but in my context... that can be very fun with period pieces, although I'm personally a bit of a grump who's like "you know they didn't mean that." But I don't believe it's intentional and I'm watching from 2022 when that is no longer a popular gay style or a style especially associated with the gay community. And I'll be honest, my dislike for the more serious interpretations that are popular in fandom make jokes I might otherwise enjoy less fun for me. I try to be independent, but I don't exist in a vacuum.
I know privately speculating about an actor's sexuality was different in an era where basically no one could be out, so I had to check my 2020s instinct to cringe, lol. Mike Farrell kinda fascinates me because he's very comfortable and secure in who he is and that includes being emotionally open and communicative (maybe he did get something good out of that culty program he did) and I think especially in a hypermasculine period, that can read as potentially queer. Mike Farrell was doing all of that and promoting gay rights, Alan Alda was getting called feminine and a wimp and promoting the ERA, and though he was not open at the time, David Ogden Stiers was a gay man. MASH was not a place for traditional gender roles or toxic masculinity and I love them for it.
I'm sure it's there for a significant number of people, but in the scheme of the number of people who watched mash, it's a small fraction. I have tried to be clear that my opinions are my own and I hope I've succeeded at that. As a gay person, I don't see it. There are other gay people who also don't see it. There are gay people that do. We're not a monolith. I really don't like how "gay culture" sometimes morphs into an implication that we all agree on everything or see everything the same way. So I'm glad there are different interpretations. I'm going to keep talking about mine and if I sound contrarian it's only because one interpretation happens to be overwhelmingly popular in this particular community and I want to be heard.

“She destroyed the economy,” ?? The economy was built off the slave trade??? if the economy is built on slavery it deserves to be destroyed. I’m not sure how to get it through peoples heads. Slavery bad you fucking idiots. Not directed at you!! Your doing amazing and I’d die for you!! This is directed the people replying to one of your posts.
Absolutely! I am of the opinion that the ends do justify the means. Some people are just stuck in their own ideas about what a character is even with textual evidence that contradicts that set idea. Daenerys isn’t perfect, she’s made mistakes along the way, but so has oh, every other character in the series. Her and Jon are the only two of the main five who have had journeys majorly related to politics and ruling. Jons actions literally got him murdered. They’re both incredibly young and both are inexperienced and are going to make mistakes.
Honestly, Daenerys is a sensitive spot for a lot of us because she means so much to every one of us in different ways, we’re used to people vilifying her and holding a certain bias against her in favor of other characters, and the got finale really didn’t do us any good lol. It’s tough for me particularly because it feels like someone is attacking my best friend or someone I care deeply for and not being able to do anything about it. I process emotions as first anger and then sadness. I get incredibly angry and frustrated, then once the anger is gone I just get really really really upset and blue about it. I get upset that people genuinely truly think and believe these things when it’s just such a misunderstanding of her character and the double standards the fandom has against Daenerys drive me up a wall. Especially with this person, they seemed to think that everything Jon has done was morally correct whilst Daenerys freeing slaves was self serving and she was wrong for doing it because she’s an outsider who doesn’t respect essosi cultures even though she was raised there and most definitely does respect their cultures as she’s literally the most cultured character in asoiaf (??) it’s the double standards and mental hoops for me luv xoxo
With that being said, I might have been a bit condescending in my responses, sure, but when someone is spitting out false information like it’s canon and factual, it irkes me a bit. I’ve learned that most of the time dealing with people online, you’re not going to get them to change their mind on something regardless of how much proof you have of them being wrong. I still wanted to see if maybe they’d see that what they were saying wasn’t factual and maybe they could be like oh yeah I forgot about that I take that back but no, I doubt they read any of the metas linked and just refuted everything any of us said with their own idea of what happened with no textual proof lol.
I let them go on for a while and allowed more of dany stan community see their uh, interesting take on her character, but I just blocked them because it’s getting a bit too out of hand. The post itself is now book length, and not at all what I intended for it to be, and if they’re just going to fight and insigate then I’m going to block you lol. Also, in one of their last replies, they said “what an awful community” as if they didn’t walk into my house and set the kitchen on fire lmaoo like you’re literally the one who put yourself in this situation?
Also, they said that they’re not an anti but think she will be a villain in the end, don’t think she was right to free slaves, doesn’t think she respects other cultures, thinks she forced westeros cultures into essosi cultures (she was exiled from westeros when she was an infant??? how could she force a culture on another culture she’s never experienced herself??) So yeah, I’ve considered them an one of the worst kinds of antis; aka the ones who say that they’re not antis and are neutral about her but hold her to higher standards than other characters and vilify her for every action she takes lol.
“Slavery is bad you fucking idiots” well, if you say that to them like I did then you’ll get the “of course slavery is bad but-“ quote they always love to pull. Or you could take that persons same approach and try to show the slavers side of the situation rather than the actual enslaved people. Yes your opinions on ending fictional slavery most definitely mirror your real life politics and I’d like for you to stay 500 ft away from me at all times!
I can say it’s been free entertainment for us, though!

Tonight is it. Tonight is the series finale of Supernatural.
When I started watching this show in 2009, I had no idea the impact it would later have in my life. I owe so much to Supernatural, and especially Destiel, for the person I became. This show basically feels like a part of me, and even though I did fall out of love with it for some time, I never stopped watching it, because Sam, Dean, Cas, and later Jack, meant so much to me, even though I didn’t like the story/plot anymore, I cared to see how their stories would end.
I had never gotten this emotionally involved with a TV show in my life. I’d say I got even more involved than Buffy, which is the other big TV show in my life. The difference probably lies on the fact that I binge watched Buffy, but I watched Supernatural real-time for 11 years.
Here is my story with Supernatural:
I first heard of the show from one of my best friends at University. She was a huge fan. She recommended the show to me in 2008. She showed me images she had saved of Dean and Sam, and told me the basics of it; she was a Wincest shipper (later converted to a Destiel shipper), so her biggest investment in SPN was the brothers. I didn’t think Dean and Sam (Jensen and Jared) were as handsome as she thought they were. haha But she was crazy about them! I didn’t really get interested in watching the show; it didn’t exactly sound like something I’d watch.
Later, in 2009, my mom left the TV on as we sorted the laundry, and Supernatural was playing on TNT. My mom is a huge fan of Charmed, and she would always watch the Charmed reruns on TNT. She left it on and Supernatural started, and she got interested so she kept watching it. I don’t remember exactly which episode was playing (maybe the Wendigo episode? Not sure, but it was an early season episode). And after that day, we kind of started watching it out of order.
I became really interested in the show and kept watching it after that day with my mom and sisters, but I wouldn’t exactly call myself a fan. I mean, I was a fan, but I still wasn’t that emotionally invested. When I could finally watch the entire show up to that point in order until Swan Song, that’s when I was already emotionally invested. I had become a “Sam!girl” and I cared so much about what was going to happen next. I was really happy when I found that a season 6 was happening and Sam was alive and out of Hell, and I was really happy to see that it was Sera Gamble running it, because her episodes had been my favorite. (I regretted being excited about Sera Gamble later though lol).
During season 6 it’s when I started to notice Destiel. Or at least, I started noticing that Castiel was in love with Dean. In my mind, though, there was no way Dean was in love with Cas because for me back then, Dean was straight. I was also raised very conservative and catholic, so for me back then, homosexuality was a sin and it made me uncomfortable to think about it. Especially when deep inside, I wondered if I was not straight myself and I was scared about it--I knew I wasn’t exactly straight, but I was afraid to even consider the possibility (turns out, I’m asexual--I’ll get to that in a minute). For me Dean was straight even if Cas did love him. I started hearing about Destiel around that time in the internet, too. And my sister from the moment she saw Cas’ intro she was like “that’s Dean’s man”, though I thought she was joking. I saw Destiel art for the first time under Facebook posts, and I remember replying to those posts that it was beautiful art, but “the show is about Sam and Dean, about the brothers” (How dumb was I. lol).
So, I watched through seasons 6 and 7, and around this time Cas had become a favorite character for me, and seeing what Sera Gamble did with the character really hurt me. I hated the Megstiel fling they wrote for Cas, and hated what happened to Cas in season 7 when he lost his mind. That was painful to watch (I especially hated the Megstiel in season 7, it felt like... rape? If you know what I mean, since Cas wasn’t okay in his mind I felt like she could take advantage of him... That’s another conversation for another time, though). I had fallen out of love with Supernatural for the first time during season 7. But watching Supernatural had become something obvious for me and my family, you know? We’d always watch it, even if I wasn’t enjoying the story anymore. So, when season 8 started, we were right there to watch.
And that’s when I really, really, saw Destiel happen right before my eyes. It was episode 8x02, and Dean remembered the moment he found Cas in Purgatory. That scene, that moment... I ran to my sister’s room (who was no longer interested in Supernatural), and I told her. I told her Destiel is real. I started researching online to see if other people really considered Destiel as a serious ship, or if it was just a for fun ship, as I had thought until then. And that’s how I came across Tumblr. I found Destiel Meta about season 7. And it made so much sense. Like, even season 7, which I hated and didn’t make sense to me, started to make sense! As a matter of fact, it only made sense when I looked at it through a Destiel lens. I found this huge community of people who saw Destiel and hoped for it to happen in canon. People who, like me, would only ship relationships that had potential for canon, and saw this in Destiel. I found, I am not imagining this; it’s really there. Dean and Castiel really have a shot at being together in canon.
I also discovered the word “asexual” and what it means thanks to the reading of Castiel as asexual, during this time in late 2012, and I could finally define myself after wondering for years if I was actually a lesbian and I still hadn’t really defined it, though I liked boys but not in a sexual way. I found the term asexuality and I finally knew where I fit. I learned SO much through Destiel, and Tumblr, about sexuality and sexual orientations, about gender, about identity and representation, about the struggles and fight of the LGBTQ community... I can honestly say I am a better person today thanks to this ship. This is why representation matters so much.
Moving on, I fell out of love with Supernatural again during season 9. But by this time, I was too emotionally invested in these characters to quit the show. Seasons 10 was the same. I didn’t care much. Season 11... I was really uncomfortable with the Amara thing, given she was shown as a baby and Dean had this sexual connection to her... It was so darn weird. But then I realized something: Amara was an object that was there to develop Destiel even more?? And I got interested in SPN again, but I was treading carefully, because I felt like this show was kind of always baiting the fandom with Destiel, never to deliver in the end. I cared again, but never like I used to care back during season 8.
Season 8 was my peak as a Supernatural and Destiel fangirl. During season 11 it was when I realized that I only cared about the characters now, but predominantly, I only cared about DeanCas at this point. The storylines were not engaging anymore, and some themes had become repetitive, because everything had been explored with these characters, except for the DeanCas romance (in a textual way). I wanted to see if their relationship was ever going to be acknowledged somehow in the show.
Since season 11, up until November 5th, 2020, season 15 episode 18, I was watching Supernatural casually, just to see what would become of the characters and especially what would become of Destiel. I thought the MOST we were ever going to get was something ambiguous and easy to dismiss. Something like hand holding at MOST, but realistically, a glance that shippers could say meant more, but haters could easily dismiss. And then, 15x18 happened: Castiel confessed his love to Dean Winchester, in a final sacrifice of love. Cas said “I love you” after saying all these beautiful things about Dean and all the reasons why he fell in love with him. How Dean changed him for good.
Suddenly, everything was possible. Suddenly, Destiel could really happen. It didn’t matter that Castiel was dead, because Castiel has been dead before too many times, and so has Dean (lol). Cas had to come back! And Dean would say those words back.
All of those years, we were right! Destiel was truly a love story.
I was okay for years, if Destiel never went canon, I didn’t mind anymore, because they were canon to me. I never even dreamed we’d get a canon love confession, and even less did I consider we’d be getting such a beautiful and epic love confession as the one we got.
Now, as I wait for the finale episode in the series, I expect Destiel will be fully canon tonight. As I wait, I am a bundle of nerves and anticipation for the first time in years, in wait for a new episode. I am once again emotionally invested in these characters like I was years ago. Because now, Dean and Cas really do have a shot at being together at the end of this story. Now it’s no longer a fan fantasy and hope; now it’s real. Destiel is real. Destiel is canon. I have to say, after the way they have set up the story, I will be incredibly disappointed if it doesn’t resolve the way I hope, with a DeanCas happy ending. I cannot forgive a one-sided Destiel ending when they could have just let us have our headcanons at the end of the show. But at least we know Destiel was always real, and it was mentioned in the show, so it’s now indisputable that this was always a love story. That’s the up side. Castiel has confessed his feelings for Dean; he was canonically in love with Dean all this time and his rebellion against Heaven was all for Dean, and nobody can take that away from us now. In my heart I know, Dean is also in love with Cas, and that will be one of my takeaways from this show, especially now that Cas has come out and said the words. If I was right about Cas loving Dean, I am right about Dean loving Cas.
As I wait for the series finale, I know in my heart, Supernatural will always be special for me. Not only because of Destiel, but because of all the years watching it with my mom and sisters and finding the fandom and participating in a fandom for the first time in my life. It was fun, and it was life-changing.
I am incredibly grateful to Supernatural, this fandom, and especially Destiel. I am a better person because of this fandom, and I have zero regrets having been a part of this. (Even when I complain about Supernatural all the time! haha).
Super long ramble, and probably I could have worded this better, but I had to write something today, as it is the final day of Supernatural.
Let us hope for a happy ending.

this might be a strange question but what goes into becoming a teacher? i've been thinking about becoming a teacher and i'm nervous even though it's something i really think i want to do and i'm curious as to how you go about becoming one like what courses/requirements do you need to take and how do you come up with a lesson plan and everything? and how did you know teaching was something you wanted to do or realize it was something you would be good at?
hm well i can only tell you about my own experience, which i would say is probably pretty unorthodox, but it’s been working really well for me!
so i’ve been working on a masters in teaching for english/language arts grades 5-12 from western governors university, which is an (accredited) online program for aspiring teachers who need to be licensed as teachers in general as well as certified/endorsed in their particular subject areas. depending on what you want to teach, there are a couple of undergrad teaching degrees they offer (i believe it’s elementary ed, special ed, and a couple of different math and science programs), but to do like language arts or social studies etc, you’d need to have a bachelors degree to qualify -- though i also did my bachelors at wgu (in business management sdklfdjskdflsjd i hated it) so it doesnt need to be education-related or anything
if you wanna know more about my particular program let me know, bc it works fairly unusually but is a legitimate post-secondary educational institution and is also incredibly affordable, and idk what i’d be doing if i hadnt found out that it existed lmao
but so yeah idk what an education undergrad would consist of, but for my program in particular there were a lot of english content classes, obviously, like secondary disciplinary literacy, english pedagogy, secondary reading instruction and interventions, stuff like that
and then there were a lot of more generalized pedagogical courses, like educational assessment, foundational perspectives of education, classroom management, fundamentals of diversity and inclusion, principles of psychology: child and adolescent development, and stuff like that
again, this is just based on my own experience, but re: lesson plans, i actually just had some assignments for my courses where i had to write them and justify the thought process behind the decisions i made! like in my english pedagogy course, i had to write 3 essays (one for a literature-based lesson, one for a grammar-based lesson, and one for a writing-based lesson), and in each essay there was a section where i had to plan an entire lesson using their lesson plan format, and then explain and justify why i made each choice that i made.
i’m starting student-teaching next semester, as soon as we get back from winter break, and i assume i’ll get more practice with lesson-planning through that, but basically it kind of comes down to like...figuring out the standards your students are supposed to reach, then figuring out how you’re going to break them down into a curriculum, and then for each lesson you figure out what objectives/goals you want your students to reach by the end, and you figure out how to present the material and then assess in some way whether or not the students understand it. once you know what the purpose of a lesson plan is (whether re: the idea of lesson plans in general, or a specific lesson plan you’re working on), the rest is just figuring out how to achieve that purpose. and it comes with practice! and trial and error, and figuring out what works and doesnt work with your own teaching style and in your classroom, etc. ik that’s super vague but so much of it depends of the parameters you’re given—like while i’m student-teaching i won’t be picking the books we read, so i’ll already have that requirement figured out for me, yknow?
as for your last question, my mom has been teaching my whole life, and my dad started teaching when i was about 10. my aunt is also a teacher, and my other aunt is a speech-language pathologist, so. i grew up around teachers kfjsldkfjs
i’ve just always liked explaining things to people and helping them understand them! i think really what it comes down to is that i just have a lot of passion and a lot of things to say sldfksjdkflj like i really do believe that english/language arts in particular is applicable in all parts of life, because all people communicate. i can’t speak for like. calculus or biology or whatever, but 99.9999% of people will need to do some sort of reading, and some sort of writing and/or speaking and/or communication of some type or another, and for all of the “the curtains are just blue!!!” whiners out there, it’s crucial to know how to communicate with others, and to understand what others are attempting to communicate to you, and i can’t think of a single scenario in which that isn’t the case.
plus like, idk a single person who doesn’t like some form of story, whether through tv shows or movies or books or plays or podcasts or video games etc etc etc, and imo those can all be enhanced and made even better by having some sort of background knowledge of storytelling as an art, or as a process, or as an established medium with its own structures and intertextual lexicon etc! like the more i read about the art and history of storytelling, the more i enjoy movies and tv shows (which i already love and watch frequently), bc storytelling isn’t just a textual medium!
tbh part of the reason i think i’m good at explaining things is because i grew up in an emotionally abusive household, and i learned very early on how to anticipate the way another person (usually my dad lol) would interpret something i said to him, regardless of what i actually meant by it. so i subconsciously learned to apply that skill to other people, and now i’ve got sort of a knack for being able to cater my explanations to different people based on how i think they’ll best understand the information, and not just in a classroom setting—like i sometimes serve as a mediator/”interpreter” when my sister and my dad are having difficult conversations, because i know them both well enough, and the way they think well enough, that when one of them says something, i can usually understand both their intention AND how the other person is going to interpret it, and i can rephrase or explain things so miscommunication doesn’t end up making the problem worse
so in a classroom, i can explain things in several different ways, and if i’m working one-on-one with different kids i can usually figure out what isn’t clicking and can try another way to explain it. also bc my adhd brain processes information by making connections to other things i already know, i’m particularly good at coming up with (often unusual) metaphors or analogies for things, and people are like “oh wow ok that’s a weird way to explain it but i definitely get it now” and stuff
so basically i’ve learned bc of necessity how to communicate more effectively with others, and because i want everyone else to get the enjoyment out of language arts that i do, i’m drawn to teaching because i hope to help the students find at least some area of it that they’re interested in, and to show them that literature/storytelling/communication aren’t just about reading old boring books written by racist white dudes who hated women, but about learning to represent and interpret and take part in the human experience, because the foundation of any sort of society is communication, and that very basic desire to be understood by others
so even when i didnt actively Want To Be A Teacher it was always kinda in the back of my mind like “well if i dont find anything else i wanna do, i can always be an english teacher” bc most of my favorite teachers growing up were english teachers, and even at my absolute worst i did just fine in those classes, even when i hadnt read the books we were discussing (which was most of the time jsdklfsjd which is now kind of a problem for me as a teacher so i do think i shot myself in the foot there but oh well, i was 14)
anyway, as usual that got super long, but i hope it was helpful! lemme know if you have any other questions :)

【Alone Together】 by Sherry Turkle ④
Critical Thinking:  strength and weakness part ⑵
Critical Assessment: strength and weakness of the second half
Tumblr media
Chapter 8 of Alone Together marks the beginning of the second half which switches the direction of her research from the robotic movement to how technologies in general are changing the way people view relationships (Comm-tech-culture.blogspot.com, 2012).
Tumblr media
Turkle’s key ideas are as followed:
People, especially the young who are born with the advantage of using the technology from early age, have limited chance to mature their relationship building skills, and to learn socially engage offline due to early access to online networks.
People are having more and more reliance on online and mobile communication and therefore, they start to lose personal connection to people in real life.

With further generic examples of young people walking into the process of falling behind offline interactions, Turkle successfully paints out dystopia in due course on the grounds that the phenomenon continues to prevail; The dystopia is where young people grow to become no longer able to connect with others due to lack of mutual compathy, empathy and sympathy.
Varnhagen et al. (2009), to some extent, support the idea by addressing the impact of instant messaging in the shaping of new language and advent of online slangs.
Shockingly and as all we know, these languages and expressions are more than often adopted in real life and the way people become interactive verbally has changed.
People started preferring conversation of which abide 3-S characteristics
Short (less elaborative use of words)
Simple (or simplified)
Straight-forward
What is more, the technological gap between the savvies(the young) and the oppositions, the old are becoming  vivid as time goes.
With the influence of social media and new communication technology with which the young people are born, age and generation gap have become severely detached to each opposing end, causing communicational barrier between the young and the elderly (Horton & Spieler, 2007).
Another question arises within the later half of the book:
“How will people learn about themselves and how to process their own thoughts and feelings if they never spend the time on self-reflection, but instead turn to their friends for input?”
To illustrate this, imagine you are a person with a problem that is troubling you.
Imagine also that you are physically far from anyone to make conversation with about the issue. You are likely to immediately turn to friends who are available online via messaging applications or on mobile phone to ask for an advice. You will not be put into a situation where you would have to think through on your own, giving a self-reflection.
This further connects to the idea of the young becoming insensitive towards maturing their ability to think independently.
Overall, the strength in the second half argument is that the question Turkle raises is socially relative to most readers.  And that it tackles one of the most generic and universal social issues associated with the young people and the use of mobile devices and their online access from early age. There are countless studies which support her arguement both from her own and from pre-existing bodies of literature.
Even so, I would like to point out some drawbacks of her argument.
She largely neglects the significance of textuality in delivery of emotions, thoughts and ideas.
The means to visualise and deliver a text may have become digitalised and much faster.
However, the power of writing and its delivery of sophisticated emotions and thoughts are still there, so long as they are text messages written by human beings.
According to Kramer, Guillory and Hancock (2014), their research finds that
Emotional content of text or an online post results in influencing readers response in accordance with its attitude. For instance, an emotionally positive  post incurs positive comments.
Notwithstanding the fact that instant texting begets the sense of distance between people. Yet it is not entirely eliminating the very nature of human writing of conveying emotions and thoughts to another. Only its degree has changed.
Tumblr media
In this Turkle is commiting a slight fallacy of “one-sided assessment” (Pirie, 2015, p. 121), neglecting what still remains.
“All the arguments support the new road. It means progress; it means prosperity it means a future for our town!
(And it really is rather unfortunate that they have to pull your house down to build it.)”
(Pirie, 2015, p.123)
In the same way of making false logic, Text messaging really is making people distant from each other and ever more. It must be entirely negative thing. Typing a message and sending it on mobile device must not have those human features of writing letter we used to have in the past! It must be then entirely emotionless.
(And so are we finally able to become friends with emotionless robot, by becoming one like them?)
The identifiable weakness in the second half is that the argument lacks counterpart assessment.

While companies themselves adhere to sleekness and simplicity, like Google’s clean white background and solid colors, or Apple’s simple product design, when we turn to amateur content creators and user-generated content platforms we see things start to get sloppy, and ugly on purpose (Feldman). This leads us to wonder: why would people want to create things that are “ugly on purpose”? One might assume that the higher quality would always “win”, but the Internet has proven this isn’t always the case.
Tumblr media
As the world is becoming busier and more connected with each passing year as technology continues to develop, amateur content creators favor flexibility and convenience, the “quick and dirty” over the “slow and polished”. “Instant” is better than “perfect”, and customization is king. Some reasons why quantity is valued over quality in the digital sphere is because of its speed, the absence of gatekeepers, and because ‘threads’ or digital discussions can only be around for a few hours before they expire, participants must churn out their content and upload it before its relevance is over (Eveleth). Consumer technology also has been designed to make things easier, as the technology is specifically “meant to put activities and skills that once required specialized knowledge within the reach of the common man." (Feldman)
"As opposed to media like TV or print, where the amateurish is marginalized and audience attention centers on mainstream blockbusters, the internet is built to give outsized attention to the amateurish, the accidental, and the surprise hit”, says Douglas, who coined the term ‘Internet Ugly’. While most of his article spoke about it in a visual medium such as Rage Comics or Nailed It images, he only barely touched upon the way that amateur writers flooding spaces online has had an effect on textual Internet Ugly.
Internet Slang and memes stemming from Fan fiction
User bases for many of the most popular websites or modern technology comprises of mostly amateurs: "Amateur writers, amateur designers, amateur photographers and film editors.” (Eveleth)
While the typical ways that Internet Ugly expresses itself is through “freehand mouse drawing, digital puppetry, scanned drawings, poor grammar and spelling, human-made glitches, and rough photo manipulation”, Internet Ugly can have roots in amateur writers online as well as the way that language/slang can change on the Internet, favoring poor grammar or spelling because it adds humor. I’d like to share a few examples of how Internet Ugly can affect textual content as well.
While there are also websites to upload original fiction, fan fiction thrives online, and because it is often dominated by amateur or very young writers, it has a stereotype for being poorly written, sometimes extremely so.
Three major websites host this type of content and dominate the field of written transformative works: Fanfiction.net, Archiveofourown.org (also called AO3), and Wattpad. AO3 alone has 3,466,000 uploaded ‘works’. Amateur writers and their sloppy, terrible styles often turn into part of the Internet language itself. For example, memes have come out of the grammatical errors and spelling mistakes from young teens in a popularized format called “One Direction Imagines”, published on Wattpad. As this format has exploded, it is getting harder to find the line between what was once a genuine “imagine” and just bad writing or what is a parody of that kind of writing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another example would be one of the most infamous fan fictions of all time, also known as “the worst fan fiction ever written”, is a Harry Potter inspired work called My Immortal which was recently confirmed to be a parody after over 10 year of speculation as to whether it was a “trollfic”, or not.
Many of the lines in the story have become memes themselves, such as the style of the opening paragraph being translated to apply to Shakespeare’s Hamlet.
Tumblr media
[Above: written with the prompt “Imagine Shakespeare but written in the style of My Immortal”]
Some buzzwords or phrases that become meme-like and spread in online communities are often misspelled, or absurdist, and become just more common vocabulary within Internet Slang. The components of this slang include:
Intentional misspellings, with roots in “LOLspeak” from gaming chats, such as “I can has Cheezburger”, or a more recent example of replacing “small” with “smol”.
Phonetic translation as a result of shorthand texting on SMS, or on old cell phones that you would need to hit one number pad several times to get a letter, called t9 word. An example of this would be “u” instead of “you”, “gr8″ as “great”, or “2″ instead of “to” or “too”.
Acronyms, which come and go. “Lol” (laughing out loud) or “lmao” (laughing my ass off) have stayed strong for a while and are still in use today, but it’s probably been a long time since you’ve seen others that have faded away, such as “rofl” (rolling on floor laughing), or its cringier brother, “roflcopter”.
Another important factor for the messiness and sloppiness of even the most popular memes has to do with who is on the receiving end for this type of content.
Most people that see and share these images, memes and jokes are other average people who love memes and Internet cultures, who care much more about how funny the joke is than how good the image actually looks or if the spelling is accurate.
Douglas argues that Internet Ugly isn’t going anywhere.
He says, “So long as some creators have more ideas than capabilities, there will always be an Internet Ugly.”

Comparing two platforms’ affordances
What they do and don't allow you to do with and through them
4chan's rules are very clear:
Do not upload, post, discuss, request, or link to, anything that violates local or United States law. This will be severely punished and strictly enforced.
If you are under the age of 18, or it is illegal for you to view the materials contained on this website, discontinue browsing immediately.
Do not post the following outside of /b/: Trolls, flames, racism, off-topic replies, uncalled for catchphrases, macro image replies, indecipherable text (example: "lol u tk him 2da bar|?"), anthropomorphic ("furry"), grotesque ("guro"), or loli/shota pornography.
The posting of personal information or calls to invasion is prohibited. Advertising (all forms) is also not welcome-this includes any type of referral linking.
All boards that default to the Burichan (blue) theme are to be considered "work safe". Violators may be temporarily banned and their posts removed.
The quality of posts is extremely important to this community. Contributors are encouraged to provide high-quality images and informative comments.
Submitting false reports or otherwise abusing the report system will result in a ban of indeterminate length.
Complaining about 4chan (its policies, moderation, etc.) on the imageboards can result in post deletion and banishment. The administrator will address your questions, comments, complaints, and concerns via e-mail.
Ban evasion will result in permanent bans. No exceptions-DO NOT EVADE YOUR BAN. Instead, wait and appeal it!
No excess spamming or flooding of any kind.
Impersonating the 4chan administrator, moderators, or janitors is strictly forbidden.
Remember: The use of 4chan is a privilege, not a right. The 4chan staff reserves the right to revoke access and remove content without notice
Reddit's rules are different and differ per subreddit. Anyone can create a subreddit and define the rules therein.
What’s public, what’s private
4chan's content is entirely public, the caveat being that there is a finite number of "threads" which can exist on a board (similar to a subreddit). Every time a thread is posted, a thread dies. That being said, 4chan is anonymous by default. When you post a thread/reply, the only thing used to identify you is an ID number (and even this was only recently added), before this ID number there was no way to tell that 2 posts were by the same author.
In contrast to Reddit, not all content is public, subreddits can be made private. Reddit is more "public" in that you have an online identity which you can be identified by. You can learn a lot by looking at someone's Reddit post history as it is all public.
Features they have, including interactive elements, visual, textual.
4chan has the ability to post text and photos. Some boards limit the users to text only, or certain image types. Aside from that, 4chan is quite basic.
Reddit is similar in that you only post links to content. Reddit does not host much content per say rather it aggregates and displays. Reddit is becoming more feature-rich with things such as the Reddit profile which is being beta tested as we speak.

Laugh and the World Laughs With You. Type ‘Ha,’ Not So Much. illustration by Elwood Smith by Jessica Bennett - July 08, 2017 - https://www.nytimes.com It was early in our courtship that I realized the guy I was dating, with whom I now cohabit, wasn’t laughing at my jokes. Well actually, he may have been laughing at my jokes, and in fact I thought he was laughing at my jokes, because he consistently responded with boisterous HAHAHAs to my humorous text messages. It was flattering. Except when I made a joke that clearly wasn’t that funny — perhaps only worthy of a single ha — and suddenly it dawned on me that his typical HAHAHA reply (that’s three HAs, no spaces, all caps) was formulaic. Which could mean only one thing: This was not indicative of an actual measurement of laughter, but merely of the autocorrect function on his phone that had memorized a HA sequence. I was the idiot thinking I was hilarious and he was just sooo into me. Textual representations of laughter go back at least to Chaucer, who fancied the onomatopoeic “haha” to convey merriment in his writing. (Shakespeare preferred a more staccato “ha, ha, he.”) But neither Chaucer nor Shakespeare could have predicted the universe of meaning that now exists in the subtle nuance between those two expressions. These days, a HAHAHA versus a ha in a text can indicate the difference between “I’m dying laughing” and “I literally never want to see you again.” In an era when “Moby Dick” can be rewritten in emoji, it makes sense that a few ha’s provoke such close scrutiny. Laughter, linguists will tell you, establishes closeness and conveys meaning. It sends micromessages to our conversation partner through length, tone, intonation and facial expressions. “It does the work of establishing cohesion,” said Michelle McSweeney, a research scholar at Columbia University who studies digital communication. “To say, ‘I feel comfortable enough around you to laugh.’” Another variation on haha includes “haha?” It is intended for that friend who texts you the inappropriate joke, when you’re not sure if you’re supposed to laugh or perhaps when the inappropriate joke was yours. There’s ha ha ha (note the spaces) as a way to indicate what my 13-year-old self might have referred to as “hardy har har” — or, very funny — NOT. And the more mischievous mwahahaha or bahahaha. And of course there is an emoji ha — which is crying tears of laughter and should not be confused with the crying tears of sadness that is apparently the most commonly used emoji on Instagram. “I have one friend I was convinced was autocorrecting hahaha to Bahahaha, but really it was purposeful, just a little micronuance to her digital laugh,” said Ilana Webber, a 31-year-old musician in New York. “I like it because it’s a serious laugh. Like, I’m not screwing around with that laugh, I’m laughing.” “It’s for more deserving instances, I think,” Ms. Webber added. “Or potentially if I want to make the other person feel good even if it’s not that worthy.” Like any dialect, electronic laughter has evolved. The first usage of LOL appeared in a Canadian chat room 27 years ago, coined by a man who described it as a response to a joke by a friend named Sprout. It was “so funny,” the man explained in a blog post, “that I found myself truly laughing out loud, echoing off the walls of my kitchen.” ROFL (rolling on the floor laughing) and ROFLOL (rolling on the floor laughing out loud) followed LOL some time in the early 1990s. By 2015, when Facebook conducted a study of e-laughter on its platform, haha and hehe, followed by the laughing emoji, were among the most common types of laughs. One of my friends, noting that the internet “is so weird,” said that one time she and a friend of hers made up “IATFLI” and tried to popularize it. That is: I’m about to lose it, along with a word we cannot print. But they couldn’t make IATFLI happen. It’s striking how little of this online “laughter” has to do with humor. These days, linguists might say online laughter has more of a “discourse function,” said Ms. McSweeney, who analyzed 45,000 text messages from bilingual young adults, noting that 14 percent of all the messages had LOL in them. As far back as 2008, a study of online language among teenagers published in the journal American Speech found that LOL had come to be used “as a signal of interlocutor involvement, just as one might say ‘mm-hm’ in the course of a conversation.” Ms. McSweeney’s research, recently presented at the annual conference of the Linguistic Society of America, found that digital laughter can be used for among other activities flirtation, with a haha or an LOL acting as a kind of casual wink. (Him: “What are you doing?” Her: “Talking ... lol.” The subtext: “maybe about you!”) There’s the laughter that hedges or softens what you might be saying. There’s laughter as turn-taking, the text equivalent of a pause to say, “Now you speak.” There’s also laughter as a way of showing empathy, the subject of a popular Ted talk by the linguist John McWhorter. Imagine: Colleague: Ugh, that meeting sucked. You: lol I know. Interestingly, Ms. McSweeney said, people don’t pick up each other’s digital laughter in quite the same way they do in real life; it is called “behavioral mimicry.” “When it comes to texts, a ha-space-ha-er does not become a haha-er. An LMAO-er does not become a LOLer,” she said. “So online laughter is very much like a fingerprint, which is actually very much like real life. You recognize people’s laughs.” Unless, of course, they’re being autocorrected by a robot. ------------------------------ Steven H MacDowall Why not take a moment and sign up to the Thursday File, my blog www.thursdayfile.com

A Beginner’s Guide to Meme Making From The Internet’s Best Artists
Like desirable artwork, properly memes talk with the outside global, and they also communicate a message from the artist at the back of them. If you need to make a remarkable meme—a meme that resonates on a viral stage—there is a lot to don’t forget: your message, your photos, your textual content, how to snap shots engage with your textual content, syntax, timing. With meme making, all the signifiers want to work collectively to amount to an incisive punch line.
Glaringly, there is no unique formula, however, their essence and final results are equal. A meme is digitally Darwinian, a system of natural selection which couldn’t be compelled into viral recognition—and is the reason why meme advent is extraordinarily hard (and creating terrible content material is embarrassing
I tried once, in a remote moment,
To create a very good meme after I used to be inspired by means of this picture of Nicki Minaj sitting on a mattress. Nicki published this in December, and it made me LOL. (Her posture and mood are ripe for reminiscence.) A few have attempted, however, I failed. I have to have been disappointed with the final product, due to the fact I will locate no hint of it on my telephone. I used to assume I had my finger on the pulse of the new new, but I can’t make a terrific meme to store my existence.
Maybe that’s what turned into lacking in my memes: too much attention to craft, muddled (or cheating) reason. A pleasant meme is a part subversive form of protest, component meticulously crafted digital residence of cards. The nature of meme advent is lots like making accurate artwork. (In fact, a good meme is and need to be considered an art shape.) @KA5SH, the rapper, and memory behind the genius “IFW with the vision/permit’s link and build” memes are decided to make human beings see them as such.
