Doctor Who: Fear Her

I rewatched this story on 22 June 2023, just about 17 years after it first aired on the BBC. It’s set about six years after it first aired, which was about a year after London found out it won hosting the Olympics (and London was hit by terrorist bombs); those Olympics were held eleven years ago now. Where does the time go?

We begin in an East London with union flags everywhere, and signs up celebrating the Olympic Games in London. Our heroes arrive to discover children disappearing and immediately investigate. Rose witnesses a Jorts cat disappear from a cardboard box.

I recall enjoying it when I first watched it. Not many other people did, apparently. It’s got a Survival type feel to it, only the monster is related to imaginary friends rather than cats or "survival of the fittest". The big bad emanates from a kid who is feels things intensely but perhaps isn’t well understood. There are hints that she’s had a traumatic childhood and it’s stated that she feels lonely… 

I enjoyed it again for what it is — a fairly straightforward tale of horror lurking in lonely suburban bedrooms.

Of course, it gets the real opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympics almost completely wrong, but hey…
