Rail Strikes & London Exhibitions

Personal blog/diary, exhibitions and why rail strikes are evil!

Thursday 10th of November happened to be a rail strike. People in London were occupying overground territories as never before.

And due to this event, many Universities decided to make their lectures happen online instead of offline.

And, to most of the students (like me) it came as an opportunity to take a day off. I will not say, that it was a good idea, but it was certainly fun, to go and explore the centre of London.

First, my interest was caught by the "LuYang NetiNeti" exhibition at the Zabludowicz Collection center. The entrance was completely free and the room, where the exhibition took place, was in the "cyberpunk" style, with lots of interactive "anime-themed" places.

Then, after 1.5 hour instead of half an hour (Rail strikes yaaay), I got to the Wellcome Collection center, where I got to see the "In plain sight" exhibition. The entrance was completely free and inside you could see, that the main point of the show was to "explore the different ways we see and are seen by others" (yes, I copied the description from the site of the exhibition; here should be Harvard referencing and so on...)

Below are some photos and videos that I managed to take from both exhibitions! And that will certainly tell you more!

Then, "the funniest" part was trip back home! It was 5 pm when I decided "aah, time to go home".

People were everywhere! Every bus was like a "fish can", bus drivers didn't even stop, because of the number of people inside. And after a couple of hours of waiting for the bus, the one finally came... and broke down half way :_)

Summer Exhibition at Royal Academy of Arts 2022

Summer Exhibition happens every year at the Royal Academy of Arts and this year is exceptional fun. There are hundreds of works covered many different styles and numerous ways to make art, from paintings, collages, photography, to mind-boggling installations. If you are an art collector, you can for sure find something you enjoy; if you are an artist, you can certainly be inspired and enlightened. Because these are mostly made by emerging artists, the exploration is raw and fascinating to see. I have been visiting twice and the second time is still refreshing.

If you are fascinated by the rotten gemstone lemon on the summer exhibition poster, you can have a visit to the Josh Lilley Gallery 20 mins walks away to enjoy Kathleen Ryan’s solo exhibition.

Mohammed Sami

“The power of invisibility has always been stronger for me than the power of visibility.”

Mohammed Sami approaches painting as an allegorical representation of the striking image of conflict and violence. His paintings explore belated memories triggered by common everyday objects from when he immigrated to Sweden as a refugee from his native Iraq.

Rather than using the stereotypical image of trauma to testify to the Iraq conflict, which he witnessed first-hand, Sami deploys painting to articulate war, memory, and loss obliquely.

Sami’s painting challenges the typical image of suffering and provides a symptomatic perspective of conflict dynamics and its effects through a slow personal reading. His autobiographical works aim to evoke a widespread sense of loss that inhabits cultures collectively when it extends selfishness into generosity.

Born in Baghdad, Iraq, in 1984, Sami lives and works in London, UK.

➡️ Currently his work is shown in ‘The Point 0’ exhibition at Camden Art Centre, his first institutional solo show in the UK, until May 28, 2023. Sami is also featured in the 58th Carnegie International, on view until April 2, 2023.
