gotta take the dethadvocate here - the apology was a crap excuse because he didn’t want to tell pickles “oh i destroyed the record because whales told me to” because he didn’t want to appear crazy

he didn’t have an apology problem but he felt as such due to the fact he wasn’t sorry at all for what he did - he feels insane due to hearing prophets tell him it was the right thing to do

So by feeling sick to himself, he would rather look like a dick than a madman and excuse himself from apologizing to pickles. would he rather have his best friend get annoyed for a bit, or would he rather have his friend forever shun him for being batshit crazy? Nathan must have felt he’d rather have the friendship end like typical douchebags sabotage it rather than making Pickles fear his friend’s sanity-he doesnt have an issue apologizing, he has only told pickles that so he would look like a dick instead of a loony dood.

I really like this reading! I just don’t feel like it’s supported by the narrative the series laid out, and is severely undercut by “I’m sorry I took the girl but I don’t want her.” I wish the show brought up Nathan’s talk with the whales more! I wish we could have seen Nathan grappling with sacrificing is decade long friendship in order to maintain the image of sanity! There’s a lot of interesting directions the series could have taken but didn’t. But that’s what fanworks are for baybeeee.
