One thing I think about a lot is whether programs are conscious. I mean, what makes us more "human" than a machine?

Programs live by a set of "rules" (its code) but who's to say we don't? For example, when faced with a room of bees or a room of kittens, most people know exactly what they would take. This does become increasingly complex, what if the bee room had a million dollars in it? Why couldn't we be a set of code and rules?

Sure, machines are created by people but aren't people also created by people? And I'm not just talking about reproduction. There's also culture. A child is affected by their environment and experiences and they often aren't given an option into what their environment is. We impose sets of values and beliefs on children that influence decision making, just as we write the code for a computer (though imposing culture is more indirect).

And with the rise of artificial intelligence we are getting programs that grow and change more than ever before. AI adapts. And just the phrase artificial intelligence implies a sort of intelligence, a humanity in there.

Maybe as of now machines don't hit consciousness, but are they limited not to? Could a set of ones and zeroes attain consciousness, and has it already? I come back to this question all the time and grapple with what makes us superior in consciousness and intelligence to anything else. At the end of the day, we can't prove something else thinks (as of now). And if it doesn't, we can't prove it may never get to that point. One day, humans may play God and create their own "species". But for now, we can't prove anything, and that's the scariest part. We may already be playing God but we just don't know it.
