what are your guys's favorite recordings of mahler symphony no. 2?
for a while mine's been one with claudio abbado and the 2003 Lucerne Festival Orchestra, but I just listened to bernstein and the NY phil in 1987 (with christina ludwig and barbara hendricks) and i must say i love the biting sharpness of the high brass that is missing from abbado's recording. additionally, the softs are more mellow and the louds are more attention-grabbing. i feel like some sections are drowned out a bit in the abbado recording; when i listened to the 1987 bernstein for the first time, i heard prominent parts of the piece i had never heard before in abbado's version.
imo simon rattle with BPO was a bit disappointing. it lagged quite a bit in some parts and overall was just kind of...boring? sluggish? not really quite sure how to word it.
im also looking forward to listening to jurowski with the LPO.
what are your thoughts?

Was ist da los? (more…)

FESTIVAL STRINGS LUCERNE

EASTBOUND

OTD in Music History: Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873 - 1943) takes the concert stage in Europe for the final time, as a featured performer at the 1939 Lucerne International Music Festival in Switzerland. The 1939–40 concert season saw the 66-year-old Rachmaninoff give far fewer concerts than was usual for him. The reason was that Rachmaninoff had seriously injured himself in a bad fall at his house in Switzerland; by the time he had recovered, his appearance at Lucerne would assume historic proportions -- shortly thereafter his entire family fled war-torn Europe for America. The next year, while living in New York, Rachmaninoff completed his final composition, the famous “Symphonic Dances” (Op. 45); then in early 1942, he was advised by his doctor to relocate to a warmer climate, and so the Rachmaninoff family moved yet again, this time to Beverly Hills. Rachmaninoff spent his final year living just down the street from Igor Stravinsky (1882 - 1971) before he passed away from metastatic melanoma in March 1943. PICTURED: An early postcard photograph showing the young Rachmaninoff, signed and dated ("London 26 Mai 1908") during one of this first concert tours. Rachmaninoff has also written out the musical motto that opens his famous Prelude in c# minor, Op. 3, No. 2 -- nicknamed (not by Rachmaninoff!) "The Bells of Moscow." This piece grew to be so popular that it was referred to simply as "The Prelude," and audiences would demand it as an encore at all of his performances. Rachmaninoff grew tired of "The Prelude," often remarking that he wished he had never written it. It didn't help that, at the time it was first published in 1893, Russian publishers did not have to pay royalties, and so the only direct financial return that Rachmaninoff ever saw from it was a small one-time publishing fee… had he only held a copyright in "The Prelude," he would have spent his later life as a very wealthy man...

[ The day after the first night of Aegis Docking festivities, in early afternoon]
"My beloved daughter and grandchildren were all abducted last night. By Tahariel Elohim."
Gasps resounded through the court as Charidynn paused, gauging the reactions of a few important faces before continuing.
"Precautions were quietly taken, as I know many of you have noticed, to try and apprehend Elohim without causing alarm in order to avoid chaos---yet chaos is what was created to distract my guards and my family. All to give him opportunity to flee with children of the empire."
Tumblr media
"I am not certain if Dasanne Navarro is involved with Elohim's scheme to tear my family apart, but I promise that he and the entire East Castle is being investigated thoroughly. Anyone who has seen or heard anything even the slightest bit out of the ordinary, I implore you to come seek audience with me. Any help will be generously rewarded. I will spare no expense to bring my family together again." And if no one steps forward, yet he happens to find some connection to whatever the hell occurred on his palace, Charidynn only hopes the fates will grant him enough patience to not tear into their throat.
"That being said, I know many of you were either harmed---" His gaze briefly catches the young Namodian King in the far corner of the Hall. "---or disturbed by the events of last night. I extend my deepest apologies. I have sent word to some of you that I will speak with you personally, but for the rest---please conclude matters with High Priest Heiras or to the
official Crown Prince of Vanystea....."
"My son, Edmund Lucerne vi Cythonia."

Shrove Monday/Güdismontag
This year, Shrove Monday will be observed on February 20. The day, also known as “Collop Monday”, “Rose Monday”, “Merry Monday”, or “Hall Monday,” is an annual Christian holiday that is observed on the Monday before Ash Wednesday. The day is celebrated with carnival parades and floats that often satirize a culture’s habits or people, national and international public figures, recent events, and taboo subjects. Marching bands and local associations are also a part of these parades. The parades are visited by spectators and some may even receive media coverage. Spectators at the parade also dress as mythical or political figures, thus adding to the merriment of the day.
History of Shrove Monday
The origins of Shrove Monday are not entirely clear. However, the traditions around the carnival and parades may have begun over two thousand years ago by the Romans. In these carnivals, it wasn’t uncommon to see the servants and slaves playing the role of masters and dressing up like them. Fast forward to today, the tradition continues with people dressing up as local and international public figures while satirizing them.
Shrove Monday also signals the end of the period before ‘Lent’ for many Christians. Until Easter, Christians observe a period called Lent. Some might even choose to fast or spend more time praying during the Shrovetide week. Several Christians give up meat, sugar, eggs, and alcohol during this period. The fast or abstinence is broken by consuming these food products during the carnivals.
The day is sometimes called “Collopy Monday” in the U.K. owing to a traditional meal eaten for breakfast on the day — collops of bacon eaten with an egg. Whereas in east Cornwall, Shrove Monday is known as “Paisen Monday” or “Peasen Monday”, in honor of the pea soup that is eaten on this day. Shrove Monday is a popular holiday in numerous countries. It is part of the Carnival calendar in Greece, and in many Caribbean countries, it is known as “Carnival Monday” — thus starting the Carnival season. In the Americas, Shrove Monday is more popular as “Luni Gras” or “Fat Monday”. In Lucerne it's called "Güdismontag". Güdis is an old word for stomach and Montag is Monday. It's the last Monday to fill your stomach with all the good eats before the Lent starts on Wednesday.
It appears that almost every culture has its version of Shrove Monday!

Iolaus and Heracles mosaic
1000+ BC – Iolaus was a Theban divine hero, son of Iphicles and Automedusa. He was famed for being Heracles's nephew and for helping with some of his Labors, and also for being one of the Argonauts. Through his daughter Leipephilene he was considered to have fathered the mythic and historic line of the kings of Corinth.
As a son of Iphicles, Iolaus was a nephew of Heracles. He often acted as Heracles' charioteer and companion. He was popularly regarded as Heracles's lover, and the shrine to him in Thebes was a place where male couples worshiped and made vows.
Tumblr media
Iolaus (L) and Heracles (R) united by Eros
The Theban gymnasium was also named after him, and the Iolaeia, an athletic festival consisting of gymnastic and equestrian events, was held yearly in Thebes in his honor. The victors at the Iolaea were crowned with garlands of myrtle.
Iolaus provided essential help to Heracles in his battle against the Hydra, his second labor. Seeing that Heracles was being overwhelmed by the multi-headed monster (the Lernaean Hydra), who grew two heads in place of each one cut off, Iolaus sprang to help, cauterizing each neck as Heracles beheaded it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
1618 – Sir Walter Raleigh was executed on this date (b.1552). The famed English writer, poet, courtier and explorer was responsible for establishing the second English colony in the New World (after Newfoundland was established by Sir Humphrey Gilbert nearly one year previously, August 5 1583), on June 4, 1584, at Roanoke Island in present-day North Carolina.
The question for us here is this: Was Sir Walter Raleigh Christopher Marlowe's lover? Anything is possible, especially when so little is known about both. For many years, this provocative possibility has been suggested, even though it is based entirely on speculation. Marlowe wrote a poem titled, "The Passionate Shepherd to His Love," which begins with the charming invitation "Come live with me and be my love." A twin poem, "The Nymph's Reply to The Shepherd," appeared shortly thereafter, and there is little doubt that it was written by Raleigh out of love for Marlowe.

The Swiss Guard in traditional uniform.
1954 – Alois Estermann (d.1998) was a senior officer of the Swiss Guard who was murdered in his apartment in the Vatican City.
Estermann was born in Gunzwil, in the Canton of Lucerne. In 1998 he was appointed as Commander of the Pontifical Swiss Guard.
According to official Vatican statements, Estermann and his Venezuelan wife, Gladys Meza Romero, were killed in May 1998 by a young Swiss Guard Cédric Tornay, who later committed suicide. Estermann, formerly acting commander of the Swiss Guard, had been confirmed in his position the same day. Tornay had earlier been reprimanded for breaches of discipline and had been passed over for a medal routinely awarded to Guards after three years of service.
The British journalist, John Follain, undertook extensive interviews with key witnesses to the murders to inform his book, City of Secrets: The Truth behind the murders at the Vatican (2006). Follain dismisses speculation that Estermann, his wife, and Tornay were murdered by an external fourth party or that Estermann was a spy for the former East German government.
Follain's research indicated that Cédric Tornay did indeed kill his commander, and his commander's wife before turning the gun on himself. Tornay found the running of the Swiss Guard archaic, and resented the dominance of the Swiss German majority contingent. Tornay turned to Alois Estermann for affection, and enjoyed a short homosexual affair. Their relationship deteriorated into acrimony as Tornay realised that Estermann had betrayed him with another guard. Estermann's close links to the Opus Dei movement, and his final refusal to award the benemeriti medal for 3-years service led to further frustration and Tornay's ultimate decision to kill Estermann.
Pope John Paul II personally celebrated Estermann's Funeral Mass in the church of Saints Martin and Sebastian.

1931 – Clyde Hicks of North Carolina was stationed in Hawaii, arrested on sodomy charges and sentenced to six years in prison. He was transferred to Alcatraz where he was put into solitary confinement for passing a note to another man. He was released in 1935.
Tumblr media
1989 – Under the headline "Peek-a-Boo," New York's Outweek magazine publishes a list of 66 celebrities and public figures who are allegedly gay but closeted. The article marks the beginning of controversial "outing" by some gay activists.

“The Empire of Vanystea cordially invites the royal family of Ibyssia to attend the seasonal soiree of The Aegis, imperial palace, located at its docking point in the capital of Sarisval. We humbly await you and hope to share in three days of festivities. Private rooms are offered to all guests of royal and noble status.
I, Charidynn vi Cythonia, extend an offer of marriage to the crown prince of Ibyssia. The potential bride I offer is my granddaughter Princess Lydia Luscelle vi Cythonia. I also make an additional proposal to the princess Echidna for my son Edmund Lucerne vi Cythonia.
I may write to you of their grace and intellect as well as their many achievements, however, I believe meeting in person would allow the best opportunity to decide how and if we are to move forward with a union that will ally two great nations.
I humbly await your response — The Emperor of Vanystea.”
Tumblr media
"Well... if anything, the Emperor of Vanystea is quite the bold one."
To be frank, his children finding a spouse was not on Tartarus' list of priorities. He himself has proven that this kingdom did not need to follow the "traditional" values of marriage, and no one was expecting or attempting to rush the royal heirs into anything.
Still, they'd gotten plenty of proposals. This was the first one that was so brazen, though. The king was almost impressed.
"Now, what to do..."
"If I may speak, Majesty?"
He looks away from the letter. "Speak, Persephone."
Tumblr media
"Putting aside the boldness of the Emperor, I see an opportunity. Their Highnesses are free to accept or reject their respective proposals, but attending this party opens plenty of new avenues, and not just with the Empire."
Tumblr media
"Plotting with Dionysus, are we? You propose that the merits of attending far outweigh any potential issues?"
Tumblr media
"You say 'plotting' like we're planning something sinister! All I suggest is that attending can do no harm. And should the Empire or any other nation try anything..."
She lets the sentence fall, but the meaning is clear.
"I see."
Tumblr media
"Well. Let's see where this little party leads us. Summon my children, Persephone."
Tumblr media
"At once, Your Majesty~"
