Last night I got high and wrote a program to find all of the unused elemental symbols. It turns out there’s 585 of them and it’s much less interesting the next day.

Mando'a Phonology and Pronunciation

Terran (real life) note: Mando'a seems to be mostly inspired by Polynesian and Germanic languages, resulting in, at least originally, a very standard (Latin) phonology, with none of that Celtic we'll just write something unrelated to the pronunciation to confuse everyone else stuff.

As far as I can hear (listening to Republic Commando music on repeat and spending way to much time with small sound files from Old Republic games) we have the following sound groups:

• long vowels are oo ([oː]), uu ([uː]), au ([aʊ]), aa ([aː]), ae ([ɛː]), ee ([eː]), ai ([aɪ]), ii ([iː]), y ([yʝ] unless part of 'yc, see special cases), and oi ([oɪ])

• short vowels are a ([a]), o ([ɔ]), u ([u]), e ([ə] if last or second to last letter, else [e]), and i ([ɪ] if last or second to last letter, else [i])

• soft consonants are b ([b], in some dialects [p]), d ([d] or [t]), g ([ɡ] or [k]), ji ([j]), l [l], m [m], n [n], ng [ŋ], s ([s] or [z]), and w/v ([v] or [f])

• hard consonants are p ([p]), t ([t]), k ([k]), j ([dʒ], in some dialects [j]), s ([s] or [z]), q ([q], in some dialects [k]), and r ([ʁ] at the beginning or end of a syllable, else [r])

• fricative consonants are ph ([pf]), vh ([f]), gh, (kh), h ([ˈh]), ch ([ç], in some dialects [ʃ]), and sh ([ʃ]) (I am not sure about the kh).

Hardening of Consonants

soft consonants are pronounced exactly as written at the beginning or end of a syllable; in the middle, they are hardened: it's vod [vod], but vode [vote]

g -> k

v -> f

d -> t

z -> s

C is a special case:

• c in front of ae, e, ee, ai, ii, i is spoken [s] as in kiss or [ts] as in cats (depending on dialect, not word)

• c in front of y is spoken [ʃ] as in sharp, or [tʃ] as in ouch, or (rarely) [k] as in kiss (depending on dialect, not word)

• c in front of a, aa, au, o, oo, u, uu is spoken [k] as in kiss

• the 'yc suffix is spoken [ak] for some wild reason and Kal Skirata (probably a leftover from his first language being Basic) seems to say [iʃ]

Extra Letters!

Classic Mando'a seems to forbid consonant clusters; one might say ka-rot-ta instead of ka'rta. [conjecture based on Vode An]

Okinawan Verbs II — Negative, Fundamental

We’ve covered the basics of the role of verbs and the Continuative Stem in the last grammar post. Today, let’s get into the fundamental stem and the negative form of verbs.

Fundamental Stem

Since we’ve looked at the Continuative Stem, it’s time to look at another major stem: The Fundamental Stem. Unfortunately, the Fundamental Stem is more difficult compared to the Continuative Stem as finding a verb’s Fundamental Stem depends on what type of verb it is.

You see, there are 9 types of verbs in Okinawan based on the final consonant sound in their Fundamental Stem state. They are the ka-column verbs (based on the fact that their final consonant sound in the Fundamental Stem state is k, aligning it with the か column of kana if you were to look at a kana chart), sa-column verbs, ta-column verbs, na-column verbs (of which there is only one, 死ぬん・しぬん・shinun・to die), ma-column verbs, na-column verbs, ma-column verbs, ra-column verbs (which we called -in verbs in the previous post, regardless of whether or not they’re in their -in or -yun ending state), ga-column verbs, da-column verbs, and ba-column verbs.

So how can you tell which column a verb falls into by looking at the dictionary form? Well, there’s only one na-column verb, so we have that down. We just said that verbs that end in -in/-yun are ra-column verbs. Ma-column verbs end in -mun. Sa-column verbs end in -sun. Ba-column verbs end in -bun.

Things get trickier outside of those columns. You see, both ka-column verbs and ta-column verbs end in -chun in the dictionary form and both da-column verbs and ga-column verbs end in -jun in the dictionary form. So how do you know which is which?

Uh, near as I can tell, you have to learn each verb by heart. Open up the Okinawan Language Dictionary (see the resources list), open up the spreadsheets, and in the 品詞 column, see what type of verb it says it is (for example, if it has a capital ‘K’ in that column, it’s probably a ka-column verb). For now, I don’t think it’s possible to tell the difference between ka- and ta-column verbs and the difference between ga- and da-column verbs on sight in the dictionary form.

So, that confusing mess out of the way, what are the fundamental stems? Our first step is to take away the -un/-in like in the Continuative Stem (exactly like the Continuative Stem, actually). And then, we do the following:

For Ka-column verbs — The ch- ending becomes k- Example: Kachun -> Kak-

For Sa-column verbs — Don’t do anything more. The sa-column Fundamental Stem is identical to the Continuative Stem.

For Ta-column verbs - The ch- ending becomes t- Example: Machun -> Mat-

For Na-column verbs - Don’t do anything more. The na-column Fundamental Stem is identical to the Continuative Stem. (Shin-)

For Ma-column verbs - Don’t do anything more. The ma-column Fundamental Stem is identical to the Continuative Stem.

For Ra-column verbs - This is going to be a bit different. For ra-column verbs, don’t even turn it into the Continuative Stem but simply remove -in or -yun and replace it with -r-. Example: Kooin -> Koor-

For Ga-column verbs - The j- ending becomes g- Example: Wiijun -> Wiig-

For Da-column verbs - The j- ending becomes d- Example: Yanjun -> Yand-

For Ba-column verbs - Don’t do anything more. The ba-column Fundamental Stem is identical to the Continuative Stem.

Plain Negative Terminal

Moving on, our first conjugation with the Fundamental Stem is the plain negative terminal form of the verb. To make the verb negative, simply put the dictionary form of the word into the fundamental stem and add -an.

買ーらん・こーらん・Kooran - Not buy

Plain Negative Attributive

Now, to make that attributive, we need to take the fundamental stem and add -aru.

買ーらる人・こーらるっちゅ・Kooraru cchu - not-buying person

Polite Negative

Now, let’s make the negative terminal polite. In this case, we’re taking the polite form of the verb (that will either end in abiin or ibiin). As these are ra-column verb endings, their fundamental stem is abir- and ibir-. Add -an, and there you have it.

CO JEST NIE TAK Z KULTEM ŻOŁNIERZY WYKLĘTYCH?

Po kilku latach wycieńczającej wojny, Polacy z rozczarowaniem przyjęli sprzedanie swojego kraju do rosyjskiej strefy wpływów. Jednak znakomita większość społeczeństwa była najzwyczajniej w świecie wyczerpana wojenną masakrą i pragnęła po prostu normalnie żyć. Część osób postanowiła otwarcie przystąpić do nowej władzy i pomagać w odbudowie zrujnowanego kraju, co jest zupełnie zrozumiałe. Część nie mogła się z tym pogodzić i rozpoczęła starania dyplomatyczne, pracę u podstaw i działalność propagandową przeciwko prorosyjskiemu rządowi.

Znalazła się jednak niewielka grupa, która wybrała inną drogę - wbrew zdrowemu rozsądkowi, zadecydowała o prowadzeniu działań zbrojnych na rzecz "wolnej Polski". Pomińmy już to, że powrót II RP był ostatnią rzeczą, którego społeczeństwo pragnęło pragnęło - XX-lecie międzywojenne kojarzyło się bowiem powszechnie z olbrzymią nędzą, brutalnym tłumieniem strajków, autorytaryzmem politycznym. To nie jest jednak istotne w naszym wywodzie, wróćmy więc do "wyklętych". W ich postawie mało było realizmu, jeszcze mniej nadziei, więcej romantycznego bohaterstwa, skazanego na klęskę. Absolutnie tego nie oceniamy. Rozumiemy frustrację takich osób, rozumiemy ich motywy. Rozumiemy też, że ktoś może chcieć uczcić ich, w wielu wypadkach heroiczną walkę i śmierć. Jednak przedstawianie niewielkiej grupy ludzi, działających bardzo często wbrew dowódcom i londyńskiemu rządowi, jako elementu założycielski państwa polskiego, jako spadkobierców Polskiego Państwa Podziemnego, rzekomo popieranych przez większość obywateli, jest zwyczajną, prymitywną i ohydną historyczną manipulacją. Jest kłamstwem. To, że udało się z tego kłamstwa uczynić ogólnokrajowy kult, a wręcz popkulturę, nie świadczy o niczym innym jak bardzo słabej wiedzy i jeszcze słabszym krytycyzmie polskiego społeczeństwa.

Jako ludzie lewicy, staramy się patrzeć na różne wymiary tego problemu. Jesteśmy w stanie zrozumieć, że część obywateli, rozczarowanych transformacją, konserwatywnie wychowanych, od lat pozbawionych dostępu do rzetelnej wiedzy historycznej, potrzebuje swojego znaczącego symbolu i obiera za niego grupę żołnierzy walczących straceńczo z wrogiem - w końcu to takie polskie.

Nasza wyrozumiałość kończy się jednak w momencie, gdy przyjrzymy się czołowym sylwetkom wyklętych. Problem w tym, że na główne postaci kultu wyrośli ludzie, co do których zbrodni nie ma żadnych wątpliwości: tacy jak Bury, Łupaszka, Ogień. Nie są to tylko ikony neofaszystowskiej prawicy, gotowej usprawiedliwiać każdą niegodziwość. Właśnie te postaci wymienia jako bohaterów premier Morawiecki w rządowym spocie. Wśród ofiar ich, a także innych "wyklętych", znalazło się ponad 5 tysięcy cywilów, w tym noworodki, kobiety, przypadkowi chłopi. Mordowani celowo pod różnymi pretekstami - komunistycznych poglądów, pochodzenia, religii, a czasem wystarczyło po prostu przyjąć ziemię od nowej władzy, by cała rodzina dostała kulkę w łeb od bohaterów dzisiejszego święta. Bandycka działalność części "żołnierzy wyklętych" jest świetnie udokumentowana, również przez IPN. Jest to wiedza powszechnie dostępna na wyciągnięcie ręki. Mimo to, państwo polskie konsekwentnie, bez zająknięcia, obok prawdziwych bohaterów promuje ludzi mających krew na rękach, wręcz kalających swoimi czynami pamięć o innych partyzantach. Ale takie są wymogi kultu, ideologii - nie ma w nim miejsca na refleksję, na krytycyzm. Każdy działający dla "sprawy" jest automatycznie wybielany. Polski kult "żołnierzy wyklętych" jest lustrzanym odbiciem kultu Bandery, którego tak zaciekle zwalcza. Taki już jest nacjonalizm. A my nazywaliśmy, nazywamy i będziemy nazywać zbrodnię zbrodnią, bez względu czy została dokonana w imię Wielkiej Polski, Wielkiej Ukrainy czy Wielkiej Rzeszy.

PS. Trochę prywaty: Mój dziadek po wojnie, chłop, zagorzały katolik i prawicowiec, pierwsze co zrobił to wstąpił do Partii. Dlaczego? Bo podobnie jak przytłaczająca większość innych chłopów, nie chciał powrotu RP z wegetacją w nędzy i strzelaniem do strajków przez wojsko. Powtarzał, że może znieść nawet komunę, byle by nie wróciła sanacja. Wielokrotnie rozmawiałem też o powojennej partyzantce, nie tylko z dziadkiem, ale już później, jako uczestnik badań historycznych, z dziesiątkami starszych ludzi z całej Polski. Takich rozmów, przeprowadzonych przez innych badaczy i badaczki przeczytałem setki. Obraz tzw. "żołnierzy wyklętych" w oczach starszych osób jest w miarę jednoznaczny - kojarzą się po prostu z okradającymi wioski bandami, a w najlepszym wypadku z naiwnymi idealistami, którzy prowadzą bezsensowną walkę, gdy już dawno po wszystkim. Jak ktoś nie wierzy, proszę udać się na pierwszą lepszą wieś i popytać. Niestety, ludzie pamiętający wymierają, a broszurki propagandowe Instytutu Propagandy Narodowej drukują się w coraz większych ilościach.

A crude sketch of my main conlang’s grammar

I wrote this before the first alphabet post and want to close the window its in. i don’t want to delete it i guess Pa'atic:

ii uu i u a aa Emphatic consonants (here, written with ') may be pronounced with pharyngealization or velarization. /q/ and /g'/ are uvular.

Between vowels, oral stops are realized as fricatives. Word final /t/ (but not /t'/) obeys rules roughly equivalent to French elision, going silent pre-pausally and before consonants. In medial clusters, c tends to become a fricative preferentially, otherwise the first stop fricates. R behaves like Spanish.

Syllable structure is preferentially open, although the most common is CVC. CVCC is acceptable word-finally, such as in the word mact (what?).

Generally the second open syllable of a word receives stress; stress triggers a vowel to be realized as its "long" counterpart. Typically secondary stress follows an iambic pattern if applicable. Single syllable words are typically ambiguously stressed (just like the English word "the")

Short vowels are centralized, XSAMPA I, U, and E (cf English bit, look, stuff)

Most words are either CVC, CVC(V)C, or CVCCVC.

At the phrase level, VSO and strongly head initial. This extends to other associated patterns: adjectives follow nouns, prepositional, Place Manner Time. Still, the language provides a topicalization marker -aw to front phrases. Where clauses are introduced with relative pronouns may also be argued to be an example of SVO.

Morphosyntactically, Nominative-Accusative.

If verbs share arguments, at least a subject but preferably all subsequent arguments, they may be serialized instead of linked by conjunction; think "he chased and caught the cat" > "chased caught he the cat".

At the inflectional level, the language is relatively circumflexing, but mostly suffixing.

Normal verbs may have their inflection inferred from their infinitive stem.

From the infinitive, 4 principle 'states', to borrow a parallel idea from the nominal grammar, are derived, differing principally in aspect:

from an underlying perfect stem: perfective - for completed actions, usually English's simple past or the past perfect constructions (ate, had eaten)

stative - for actions without regard to tense but are relevant, usually english's present perfect (have eaten, [with his] having eaten), often is-participle adjectives as well (is done).

from an underlying imperfect stem: imperfective - for incomplete actions, usually English's progressive tenses (am eating, will eat, was eating) cursive - for habitual actions, 'long-distance' imperfective verbs (”I am learning German”), usually English's simple present.

Perfect verbs suffix in inflection. Imperfective verbs circumflex, with a separate fossil pronoun system for the prefixes; this is akin to analogous systems in other AA languages.

Most verbs fall under one of two conjugation families, simple and waw. They differ mostly by ablaut of a to i or a to u from imperfect to perfect; the waw-conjugation also shows reduction of semivowels.

Supplemental verbs exist as well, usually split along stem lines.

Zero copula, but may be supplemented by the irregular verbs yura or 3irka, depending on context.

Normal nouns have their inflection inferred from their definite singular.

The feminine is almost always indicated with a suffix -t, or rarely, for certain collectives, a prefix t-. While irregular nouns exist, gender is almost always predictable.

Nouns take three or four basic stems, called states, three cases, and three numbers.

The states are as follows: (with manas, leg)

definite - the definate article carries case; may be prefixed by the number prefixes. "Segolates" (CVCC roots) show a schwa (a) splitting the final consonant cluster (la manas) indefinite - no definite article; the root is suffixed with u or i (following t, but not t'), case is delivered as a suffix to this stem. Number may be prefixed to the noun, normally. (mansu) construct - used to create compound nouns, heads of genitive phrases, subject of passive verbs, adverbal uses, some others; the indefinate root is circumfixed with a-a, to which case and number may be applied (definite constructs take a declined article and are not declined).
