This is Evil Spamtonology
Hello! I'm mafa @rubsjuice, she/her, and I enjoy media analysis of all kinds, even more so of Deltarune. I've been relentlessly roleplaying Spamton for two years, and I've thought a lot about this little guy, things that after a long time of restricting them to my friends' discord server, I feel the need to share with the wider community.
The owner of @spamtonology is my friend and gave me their blessing to name my blog this way because they're nicey and polite and I'm fucked up and evil.
This blog will focus on Spamton, but it will also branch to other UTDR characters, concepts, and worldbuilding, because a good character is nothing without his world and baby, Spamton is living in it.
I'm not very sure how I plan to organize the blog yet, tag-wise. I'll edit this intro post when I do.
Feel free to send asks! I love talking to other people and sharing opinions. Please don't be shy, but in case you are, I'll make sure anon asks are open <3
DISCLAIMERS:
These are all my own analysis of the written text of UTDR, as well as making cross references with other media and concepts I've come across in life. I in no way am claiming that what I'm saying is the truth, nor that it is the only acceptable interpretation of the UTDR narrative. To do so would be intellectually disonest and honestly I hate that.
My posts are intended for an adult audience. While I won't be posting explicit content, nor am I interested in doing so, I might talk about things that are upsetting or uncomfortable. I cannot and will not forbid teens from reading my blog, and I will do my best to write my posts in a way that's accessible for everyone, but I will not go to lengths to make anything I say kid-friendly. If you're in middle school and onwards, you are well-equipped to follow an intellectual discussion that is not sugarcoated or advertiser friendly, and I will not pretend you aren't.
You are allowed to fuck or not fuck Spamton in any way you'd like, I don't care and that's not the objective of this blog. You don't need to ask me anything of the sort. Play clown games, win clown prizes.

WIP Wednesday!
I was tagged by the wickedly talented @andrasste! Thank you so much! :D <3
This is from a small one shot called Music Amongst Flames and Shadows with Amayiana (Leliana/Amayian). It takes place during the Fifth Blight, when Amayian was still part of the Warden’s entourage.
Amayian’s fingers strummed the lyre, the sound lightly curling upward in the silent air of night. The lurid orange-golden flames of the bonfire roared, sending flecks of embers into the darkness, like flaming stars streaking across the darkness of night. The wind kissed the back of his neck, grazing it’s cool lips against the warmth of his skin. It was pleasant, a ray of normality in the seas of chaos and disorder.
The lyre was light in his hand, and he leaned back against the stone that he rested on, strumming the cords with gentle tugs. The music danced and waned, kissing the air in with the softest of whispers before fluttering into silence once more. He’d found the lyre in the Dalish camp when Surana had ordered the camp to treat with the wandering elves. It had been tense, a layer of uneasiness filling Amayian into his core. He knew of the hostile relations between the elves and humans - especially the one between the Dalish and human settlements. But, the Dalish were uncharacteristically cold toward Surana. Amayian saw it in their eyes; the disgust, the unbridled hatred. Amayian knew little of Surana’s past, but even the Dalish discontent toward another of their kind confused Amayian. Yet, in through that, he felt a kinship with Surana, an understanding. Surana had easily shrugged off the harsh words and coldness of the elves with easy smiles and jokes, and Amayian could not help but admire the man for that.
He plucked another string and the music whistled in his ears. It had been long since he had last picked up a lyre. Mother had wanted a song, he recalled distivility. She believed that the music was the true voice of the Maker, and would help the baby grow. It had been a trouble pregnancy for his mother, and Amayian had been all to eager to display his meddling talents. It had gotten mother to smile. She hadn’t smile in so long. She had seemed so tired, with purple-black bags beneath her eyes. To see that light-glimmering smiles of her’s was a sign that he’d must have done something right.
Something stung his eyes, and Amayian raised a hand to wipe it away. He pulled his hand away, and saw the clear liquid glazing his skin. He stared at it for a moment, but then he shooked his head. Wiping the tear-stained hand on his tunic, Amayian set the lyre down and pulled his knees to his chest. He watched was the green grasses flecked the brown earth, swaying like strands of hair. A heavy tug pulled at his heart, and it took all his might to hold it up. I’m sorry, Mama. I wasn’t strong then or now. He could have done something, Aunt Lasaire had said. But he didn’t, he simply stood there, as frightened as a sow at the killing bed than a noble Trevelyan, while his mother bled out.
“Do you play?”
His eyes flickered upward, and he felt his cheeks warmed. The lay sister’s face was brightened by a smile. Her cut, jaw-length, copper red hair glimmered crimson and orange and gold with the dancing of the flames. The color of a sunrise. Her eyes were flecked with a light brown, so little that it almost seemed non-existent as it was swarmed with waves of blue. Amayian tried to find his words, and when he did, it came out stumbling and jarring to his ears. “I-uh. No. No I don’t. Play, that is.” He cleared his throat, glancing away to hold some marginal of his dignity. When he glanced back up, he saw amused doubt glimmer faintly in her brown-tinted blue eyes. His lips thinned. “Fine. A little. When I was a child.” He ignored the way his heart threatened to jolt out of his chest. He never felt this way. The warmth that seeped in tendrils all across his body whenever she walked past; the breathlessness of her smile; the urge to smile that threatened to broker across his cheeks whenever he had gotten her to laugh. It was a strange feeling, pleasant, even. Yet it terrified him, more so than he dare admit.
“Well,” she said, settling down beside Amayian. Her warmth seemed to radiate off her, pushing away the chill of the night air away from his bones. A sense of calm and peace filled him, and all had to push down the desire to move closer to her; to feel that heat that he had never felt before, “I do.” She thrusted out her hand, her sweet smile blossoming on her cheeks. “May I?”
He nodded, feeling the warmth dousing his cheeks. He delicately lifted the carved wooden lyre, and passed it to Leliana; their hands brushing one another, sending a tingle up his arms.
Tagging back @andrasste, and I’m sending this to @rachelleofalltrades, and anyone else who wishes to do this! I’ll love to read this!

sometimes || mr. compress
desc.: Sako was only gone for three days. It may as well have been an eternity - not that you’d ever tell him that.
a/n: this isn’t the mafa fic but it’s still compress so im happy. the mafia fic is coming. i promise. don’t bail on me [masterlist and requests]
w/c: 922
“You’re a difficult one to find.”
Your hand tightened around the railing, but your back stayed to Sako as he joined you on the balcony. You couldn’t help but smile to yourself. “Taste of your own medicine, I suppose.”
He set two glasses on the railing and popped the cap off of a wine bottle. You didn’t realize the pure depth of the situation until you looked up at the man next to you, who sat the bottle next to the glasses and reached up to unclasp his mask. You’d seen Sako with just the tophat and the balaclava, but the air always seemed to leave your lungs when you could finally see his eyes. It didn’t help when the night framed his features like the world’s goddamned magnum opus.
“It wasn’t so much my fault, now. I was away on a three-day mission.” He looked down at you with a sly grin, and your heart turned against you.
You forced your gaze back out upon the city. “What’s all this for, then?”
“Well, I’ve been gone, haven’t I?” He poured your glass first. “I imagined you’d be glad to see me.”
You didn’t deny it, and he didn’t pester you over it. You took a drink.
“Toga tells me that everyone’s been looking for you,” Sako began. “Have you left this room at all today?”
“I’ve been on my balcony,” You replied.
You paused for a long moment before you asked, “How did you get into my room?”
“Hmm?” He sipped at his wine with a smirk.
“I locked the door this morning.”
“Mmm. Hadn’t noticed.” He sipped again at his drink before leaning on the rail, turned towards you. “Although, it’s a bit odd of you to stay dwelled up in your room all day, no?”
You fixed your eyes on your glass. Sako slid closer- just slightly, but enough to feel nervous.
Softly, he asked, “Would you care to talk about it?”
You talked about a lot of things with Sako. You liked to talk about new cuisines, and the weather, and the secrets behind his magic tricks (though he always pleaded that it took away from the act). He was the only one who knew your life story. But some things, especially certain things relating to Sako himself, were better left unsaid.
“I was just feeling a little down again, is all.” You were lying through your teeth. You downed the rest of your wine.
Sako hummed. “I don’t believe you.”
“It doesn’t matter whether or not you believe me.”
“It matters if I already know the truth.”
You snapped your gaze to him just as he set his glass down on the railing. With only a bit of hesitation, he reached up to set his tophat aside, and he slipped his balaclava off after it. There was no doubt he couldn’t see the repressed emotions in your eyes now tumbling outward at the sight of him.
He was handsome. He wore his smile like he knew as much and thought more of it. He was perfect, too, but there was no saying if he felt the same, because all of his attention was on you.
“You shouldn’t wait for me,” He said, grinning as if to comfort you. “I’m horrible to follow, and even worse to wait on.”
You choked on your response. “I don’t...I-...” He was patient as you gathered your thoughts. “I wasn’t waiting on you.”
“You were hiding from me, then.”
“No, that’s not- that’s not it.”
“Well, in either case, I do believe we both feel the same. Therefore…”
You looked at him, eyebrows raising as he wore a knowing smirk. You cleared your throat and stepped closer. “Therefore…?”
He grabbed the bottle. “Therefore, your glass is empty, and I’m going to need us both a bit more drunk if we’re going to sort this out this evening.”
You snapped your mouth shut as he poured more wine into your glass. You swallowed. “Uhm...sort what out?”
“Oh, well, all of this pent up emotion we’ve been keeping. I find it rather troublesome. Is that enough?” He gestured to your glass, and you nodded hastily as you scrambled for words again.
“Do you mean...uhm, what do you mean?”
He gave a heavy sigh and set the near-empty bottle on the railing behind him. He took your hands in his gloved own, and you felt something in your chest flare up at his touch.
“Let me be frank, as it seems you are in need of it,” He started. “I’ve fancied you since the moment I laid my eyes upon you, but I will find myself utterly devoted to you for as long as we shall live.” You blinked. He groaned. “I love you, you odd little person.”
“Oh...oh!” You grabbed his hands tighter as if he were trying to escape. “I- uhm- I think I love you too? I’m pretty sure? I don’t know, I’ve never actually loved loved anyone before, but I…” You sighed. Your heart was nearly about to burst from your chest. “...but I love love you.”
“That much is certain, dearest.” He planted a kiss on your knuckles, though you’d much rather he kissed your lips, but that didn’t seem to be in his itinerary that evening as he freed one of his hands to grab his wine glass. “Now, do you wish to tell me again why you’ve been isolated in your room all day?”
He grinned over the rim of his glass. You smiled.

AP-NORC poll: Government should help Americans age at home (AP) A majority of Americans agree that government should help people fulfill a widely held aspiration to age in their own homes, not institutional settings, a new poll finds. There’s a surprising level of bipartisan agreement on some proposals that could help make that happen, according to the late March survey from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. For example, 63% favor more funding to help low-income people age at home, a policy reflected in President Joe Biden’s stimulus plan and his COVID-19 relief law. That includes about half of Republicans and about three-quarters of Democrats. Overall, only 10% are opposed. Behind it all is a deep desire among Americans to maintain their independence in an aging society.
Widespread Commodity Shortages Raise Inflation Fears (NYT) Commodity shortages are rippling across the United States economy as growing demand for housing, cars, electronics and other goods runs up against supply chain congestion and high tariffs left behind by former President Donald J. Trump. The shortages—and the price increases they are eliciting—are being watched closely by the Biden administration, which is under increasing pressure from industry groups and businesses to take steps to ease them. Automakers want the White House to help them get the semiconductors they need to make cars, while the housing industry is asking for tariff relief. Pressure to intervene could intensify as the administration pushes for a multitrillion-dollar infrastructure investment package that includes money for building roads, bridges and electric vehicle charging stations—all of which could become increasingly expensive if prices keep rising.
Heeding complaints, Biden lifts refugee cap to 62,500 (Reuters) U.S. President Joe Biden said on Monday he has resurrected a plan to raise refugee admissions this year to 62,500 after drawing a wave of criticism from supporters for initially keeping the refugee cap at a historically low level. Soon after taking office in January, Biden pledged to ramp up the program but then surprised allies when he opted to stick with the lower cap out of concern over bad optics, given the rising number of migrants crossing the U.S. southern border with Mexico, U.S. officials have said. But the refugee program is distinct from the asylum system for migrants. Refugees come from all over the world, many fleeing conflict. They undergo extensive vetting while still overseas to be cleared for entry to the United States, unlike migrants who arrive at a U.S. border and then request asylum.
New York Region to Accelerate Reopening (NYT) New York and its neighbors New Jersey and Connecticut announced on Monday that they were lifting almost all their pandemic restrictions, paving the way for a return to fuller offices and restaurants, a more vibrant nightlife and a richer array of cultural and religious gatherings for the first time in a year. The relaxation of rules starting May 19 is a testament to the fact that coronavirus cases are down and vaccination rates are rising. New York will also bring back 24-hour service to the subway on May 17, after a year of overnight closures, a move critical for night-shift workers.
Colombia protests (Foreign Policy) Mass protests in Colombia sparked by President Ivan Duque’s new tax proposals continued on Monday—a day after Duque withdrew the unpopular measures—and are expected to resume today. Finance Minister Alberto Carrasquilla tendered his resignation on Monday, saying in a statement that his presence in government would “complicate the quick and effective construction of the necessary consensus.” Although Carrasquilla’s connection with the tax reforms precipitated his fall, he had become a figure of ridicule after he failed to provide an accurate answer for the current price of a dozen eggs when questioned by local media last month.
A farmer moved the border between France and Belgium so his tractor could have more room (AP) The border between Belgium and France has been largely stable for 200 years. That is, until a Belgian farmer annoyed with the placement of one of the stones marking the storied territorial divide inadvertently shifted the border 7.5 feet so his tractor could move more easily. The Belgian village of Erquelinnes, which lies along the 390-mile border with France, had as a result grown by seven feet. The French town of Bousignies-sur-Roc in turn shed more than a few inches. The stone in question dates to 1819, one year before the signing of the Treaty of Kortrijk, which set the modern-day boundaries of the once-warring states, according to the BBC. Much has improved in relations between Belgium and France in the two centuries since Napoleon’s defeat at Waterloo. “We should be able to avoid a new border war,” Aurélie Welonek, the mayor of Bousignies-sur-Roc, told a French newspaper. Belgian authorities told the BBC that they will ask the farmer to move the border back. If he does not comply, they may need to seek help from the Franco-Belgian border commission, which has not been summoned since 1930.
Opposition chief calls for lockdown as India’s coronavirus cases cross 20 million (Reuters) Indian opposition leader Rahul Gandhi called for a nationwide lockdown as the country’s tally of coronavirus infections surged past 20 million on Tuesday, becoming the second nation after the United States to pass the grim milestone. India’s deadly second wave of infections, the world’s biggest surge in coronavirus infections, has seen it take just over four months to add 10 million cases, versus more than 10 months for its first 10 million. Currently, the country has 3.45 million active cases.
Day 1 of the End of the U.S. War in Afghanistan (NYT) KANDAHAR AIRFIELD, Afghanistan—A gray American transport plane taxied down the runway, carrying munitions, a giant flat screen television from a C.I.A. base, pallets of equipment and departing troops. It was one of several aircraft that night removing what remained of the American war from this sprawling military base in the country’s south. The United States and its NATO allies spent decades building Kandahar Airfield into a wartime city, filled with tents, operations centers, barracks, basketball courts, ammunition storage sites, aircraft hangars and at least one post office. The scenes over the weekend were almost as if a multitrillion-dollar war machine had morphed into a garage sale. At the airfield’s peak in 2010 and 2011, its famous and much derided boardwalk housed snack shops, chain restaurants, a hockey rink and trinket stores. Tens of thousands of U.S. and NATO troops were based here, and many more passed through as it became the main installation for the U.S.-led war in Afghanistan’s south. Now, half-demolished outdoor gyms and empty hangars were filled with nearly 20 years’ worth of matériel.
As Lebanese cry for justice, politics paralyzes the system (AP) Even after she was taken off an investigation into alleged financial crimes by a money transfer company, the defiant Lebanese prosecutor charged ahead. She showed up at the company’s offices outside of Beirut with a group of supporters and a metal worker, who broke open the locked gate. Ghada Aoun obtained data from Mecattaf Holding Company that she contends will reveal the identities of people who sneaked billions of dollars out of Lebanon amid the financial meltdown that has hit the country. The move was part of a public feud between Aoun and Lebanon’s state prosecutor Ghassan Oueidat, who had dismissed her from the case, saying she’d overstepped with two earlier raids. Their feud has turned into scuffles between their supporters in the street. That is the problem in Lebanon: The judiciary is so deeply politicized it paralyzes the wheels of justice, mirroring how factional rivalries have paralyzed politics. Political interference in the judiciary has for years thwarted investigations into corruption, violence and assassinations. But mistrust of the judiciary is thrown into even starker relief now, when Lebanese are crying out for politicians to be held accountable for the disastrous crises in their country—not only the financial collapse but also last August’s massive explosion in Beirut’s port that killed scores and wrecked much of the capital. The explosion has been blamed on incompetence and neglect. “Those who hold on to power have set up a judiciary that is loyal to them in order to fight their opponents and protect their interests,” retired state prosecutor Hatem Madi told The Associated Press.
Netanyahu misses deadline, political future in question (AP) Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has missed a midnight deadline for putting together a new coalition government. His failure to reach an agreement late Tuesday raises the possibility that Netanyahu’s Likud party could be pushed into the opposition for the first time in 12 years. The turmoil does not mean that Netanyahu will immediately be forced out as prime minister. But he suddenly faces a serious threat to his lengthy rule. His opponents already have been holding informal talks in recent weeks to lay the groundwork for a power-sharing deal.
More than a dozen people killed by Islamist militants in northeast Nigeria (Reuters) More than a dozen people, including seven soldiers, were killed by Islamist militants in an attack in northeast Nigeria, four sources told Reuters. The militants arrived in the Ajiri community in the Mafa local government area of Borno state on motorcycles early on Sunday, killing an army commanding officer and six soldiers, the sources said. The assailants also killed six civilians, burned down nine housing blocks and carted away valuables, the sources told Reuters.
More veggies (WSJ) According to federal survey data, 76.6 percent of 51- to 70 year old women and 85.6 percent of 51- to 70-year-old men eat less than the recommended amount of vegetables. The thing is that’s actually pretty good compared to teenagers, who really need to eat some greens: fully 98.8 percent of 14- to 18-year-old girls and 98.5 percent of 14- to 18-year-old boys ate less than the recommended amount of vegetables, which is particularly bad developmentally speaking.
A good Samaritan (CNN) The 23-month-old girl who fell out of a car and into a bay Sunday after a multi-vehicle crash on a bridge in Ocean City, Maryland, is expected to make a full recovery thanks to a “humble hero” who jumped into the water to save the child, authorities said Monday. Eight people were taken to hospitals Sunday after the crash on the Route 90 bridge left a car dangling off the guardrail, authorities said. All eight were discharged from hospitals and are doing well, Ryan Whittington, firefighter and medic at Ocean City Fire Department, told CNN. Whittington said the man who saved the toddler is choosing to remain unnamed publicly. The fire department is calling him the “humble hero” for his rescue. The man was driving on the bridge, and his car was also involved in the crash, Whittington said. The drivers were pointing down to the Assawoman Bay, where he saw the girl lying in the water, face down. “He just jumped into action,” said Whittington, adding that the water in that area is about 5 feet deep, and the jump was more than 25 feet. “He saved a 23-month-old child. There’s no doubt in our mind that if he had not did what he did when he did it that we would be having a different headline to this story,” Whittington said.

Visio Divina & African American artists in the Repentance Project
Here is a new interview with Rev. Mary Amendolia Gardner on the practice of Visio Divina and her curation of art from African American artists for the Repentance Project. It’s a 50-min video.

The Repentance Project exists to encourage racial healing by communicating the systemic legacies of slavery, building relationships, and creating opportunities—through formation, repentance, and repair—for a just future.

A note about the image above from the Youtube video: the Jesus Mafa project involved people in Cameroon acting out Gospel scenes, which were then photographed. The photographs then served as the basis for a French artist to create the 60+ paintings. Since no Americans were involved, I would not have included these in a discussion on “African America Artwork” but I was not consulted.    :-)

Character Flaws  :    Accepting!

🚫 what is one thing my muse wouldn’t want someone else to know about them?
Homura has a lot of things that she wouldn’t want anyone to know about. One of the biggest more personal things is that she doesn’t want anyone to see how she is practically a parasite. Her parasite nature is an ugly side of her that. That one side that pretty much everyone would frown upon. Beyond the shell of a weak, sniffling good-for-nothing girl is just plain ugliness. She doesn’t know how to live for HERSELF at all and so therefore she views herself as a good-for-nothing parasite. She doesn’t know how to EXIST without clinging to a person. Her gloomy nature, the way that she clings to anyone that shows her any signs of affection, and the way that she latches onto that person.
She would follow the person around and just linger there as if she was the true definition of someone’s shadow. Call her a shadow or a parasite - whatever you like. Without that someone, she would be LOST and her life will not have any MEANING anymore. While most people can tell that she is weak and very DULL at first glance, many people assume that she is indeed distant from people…that she doesn’t want to be around ANYONE and just wants to be left alone. It might look like she doesn’t want friends and no, not for the sake of putting on a “cool” facade. Even after Homura discards her glasses and becomes cold, she NEVER really attaches to people because that means being exposed to more pain. Due to constant time loops, she has been forced to close herself off more than normal for the sake of protecting herself (and her mission) from getting damaged. If you had to watch your friends die over and over, you would close yourself off too at some point in order to tolerate the pain. But right now, we are mainly talking about before Homura became cold and distant. Regardless of what form Homura takes, it seems like she doesn’t want to be social and she doesn’t want to make friends. She doesn’t want to be around anyone or that’s how it seems. At first glance, that is very much true. She is SCARED and PARANOID of being with people. Always nervous that everyone is JUDGING her and placing silent ratings on her. (ZERO, ZERO, ZERO!)
However, Homura can get very attached to people. Normally, the people that she gets attached to is very few and yet she seems to cling to them nonetheless. One of the big examples of Homura’s clinging nature is MADOKA. Unable to differentiate between platonic and romantic, the relationship part doesn’t particularly MATTER in her case. Homura clings to Madoka and would do ANYTHING at all that Madoka suggests. Does Madoka want to go to the beach and hang out with Sayaka? Even if Homura doesn’t like wearing revealing swimsuits and even if the glaring sun makes her feel lightheaded, Homura will tag along with Madoka. Even if Homura is ashamed of the fact that she is nothing more than a parasite, Homura truly does care for the people that bother to stay at her side. Even then, she is always paranoid that if she doesn’t cling to that person… The said person might leave and forget about her. Homura doesn’t mind if she is in the background as long as she is with the host. The one that she cares about. The one that she NEEDS as a reason to keep on living. I could totally go in better depth, but… I’ll leave it at that.
Tumblr media
😰when my muse is stressed, how do they act out?
Personally, this depends on which Homura that you are speaking to. To keep this simple, let’s stick with Moemura for this particular question. When stressed, Homura would break down and start to distance herself from common sense. She would be very easy to toy around with in this state. Under stress, she would jump to conclusions and not think things through. She would panic to the point of triggering a panic attack. Her movements would become clumsy and her head will start to spin like a record player. She would drown out the world and her tears will begin to rise before she could stop herself. Already far from being mentally stable in the first place, Homura would be unpredictable since she has spent years of bottling up lots of her troubles and emotions. Scared and her whole state of mind becoming a blurry disorganized mess, Homura would break down bit by bit. On one hand, she can be prone to lashing out. On the other hand, she could be the type of person to just fall into despair. It really does depend on what’s going on!!
Depending on the stressful situation, her reactions might vary a lot heavily. Sometimes depending on the situation, Homura would just feel numb. No matter what type of reaction, her actions will always reflect her mental reactions. Even though I’m limiting this ask for just Moemura, this question (like most) are often more complex since Homura (even as Moemura) is a very complex character. Despite covering Moemura for the sake of not writing a novel, I can’t really just throw out a simple answer. Even as Moemura, there is so much to Homura that most people overlook. Homura isn’t just that shy girl. She is more than that. Everything about Homura is more than what’s on the surface. There are many sides to Homura - that includes her overall personality and her actions. One cannot define her with the same personality traits… She is someone bigger than personality traits. Homura is heavily flawed and not perfect at all. She’s complex and definitely a mystery.

Lauren Escote, FASA 2020-21 Co-External Chair
Tumblr media
Hey FASA!
It was just one month before the FASA Board 2020-2021 elections when asked if I would run again for board, and I gave a firm “no.” I felt that my time as media chair was so enjoyable that I was content with everything that I had done. My answer remained a solid no until one event I attended, Sweet Soiree, hosted by many other UAAO Orgs where I got to see high school friends and nursing friends that I hadn’t spoken with in ages because I was always so busy. It was such a great feeling of being reunited with all these people outside of FASA, and a light went on in my head: an idea of running for external chair.
I got to thinking of how much FASA has built a strong internal foundation the past few years that it felt right to put more focus on our external presence. And when I started talking to other future board candidates about their vision for FASA, they came to the same consensus of putting more work into our external side.
It couldn’t have worked out better, a board going in with the same vision and a passion for leading our great organization.
Tumblr media
Wow we look pretty cool.
*March 12, 2020 happens*
So, you want to know what it was like to be an external chair during a pandemic? Well let me tell ya’.
As much as the pandemic had a big impact on how external chair ran, my amazing Co (shoutout to you Christine) and I still had big plans for our tenure. While we knew that our usual external trips were no longer an option, we wanted to make sure that our members had the option to attend events to their heart’s desire. We put just about every event that was sent to us from external orgs into a comprehensive spreadsheet, and loaded up our section of the newsletter to a point where it was probably a little annoying. I knew that it would be tough to give new members the same experience of MAFA and campus events that we had, so I hope that someone, at least one of those new members had fun, learned something or even just made a new friend at an external event this year.

#BE$T FAM! 🔥
I could tell you about all of the roles and responsibilities of an external chair and tell you what to expect, but if there is one thing I learned this year from this position it is to throw your expectations out the window. While I have not had the opportunity to lead a group to FACT, or venture to another org’s PCN, I know that adding external orgs to planning events adds a plethora of possibilities.
External chair can be tricky because the majority of your tasks are reactionary. You advertise other org’s events, you might have to change plans last minute because of miscommunications, and of course you can’t host a collab event if another org doesn’t respond to your emails!
Given the occasional uncertainty that can come with this position, the best advice I can give is to be proactive. It can be a lot to try and keep all the dates and events straight in your head, after all, you’re in-the-know of not only FASA’s events, but many other orgs’ events as well. Do your best to stay organized and you’ll notice that fewer things start to slip through the cracks, which can happen sometimes, especially at the beginning of your tenure when it’s all so new. In all honesty, there were times this year where I could have definitely been more proactive, but you live and you learn and you grow.

Some last pointers for those out there who are thinking about running for this position:
You don’t have to already know a lot of people from different organizations!
This position allows you to meet people from all over the Midwest and all over campus, you have plenty of opportunities to make those connections.
Don’t be afraid to step outside of our AA&PI circle!
Of course the majority of our external events and collabs are with other FilAm or Asian American student organizations because we share so many similar experiences, but don’t be afraid to widen your scope of potential co-collaborators. (This year, we hosted our first collab with La Casa, the Latinx student org on campus, and it was amazing, wonderful, great, would highly recommend working with them in the future! Shoutout to previous external chair AJ Espinoza for passing along the idea!)
You’re a board member first, and external chair second.
It may sound odd but if you’ve spoken with any other past boardies you have probably heard this a thousand times. Make sure to be there whenever you can for your fellow boardies, if they need someone to run a breakout room, volunteer. If someone needs crafts supplies for an event, offer to make a Walgreens run before the event, etc. A board that is there for each other is a board that works best together!
Tumblr media
Bamboo gets scared when they see us pulling up
To all my fellow boardies and interns, it was a pleasure and hope you had as much fun as I did this year.
To my Co-External chair, I couldn’t have done it without you. Thank you for dealing with my memory that is that of a goldfish sometimes, and for pushing to make sure that everything was done right and never taking the easy way out. I admire your work ethic and wouldn’t had anyone else as my Co. <3
Tumblr media
Get you a Co like mine.
FASA, you have been my pride and joy since joining freshman year. I’m grateful for all that I have learned from being both a member and a boardie, and am honored to have helped lead these past two years. The friends family I have made from this organization have helped shape me into the person I am today and I will never forget that. As someone who is approaching the end of her junior year, there is officially more of my college career behind me than in front of me. I’ve seen a lot of what FASA has been and the traditions that we have upheld, but I’m excited to see what the future of FASA holds.

JUST IN:North’s security situation depressing — Arewa Forum
Tumblr media
Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF, has described the security situation in the north as depressing, saying it is so bad that the present generation would have nothing to leave behind for future generations. It also lamented the fact that violence has become a means of livelihood for children of the region.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
The ACF’s position came as Borno State governor, Prof Babagana Zulum, said statewide records has shown that President Muhammadu Buhari has done better that previous governments in tackling the Boko Haram menace in his state.
This is just as troops of the joint military spike, codenamed Operation Whirl Stroke, in a gunfight on Sunday night, killed no fewer than three suspected armed bandits at Adaka village, a suburb of Makurdi, the Benue State capital. Chairman of the ACF, Chief Audu Ogbeh, spoke on the security situation in the north when he led a delegation to Maiduguri, to condole Borno State governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum, following the killing of 43 rice farmers at Zabarmari, Borno State two weeks ago.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
He said: “We are depressed, very depressed. And anyone of us, of our age, who was not depressed, was not well-born, because we have nothing to leave behind for our children, and violence will not sustain us. ‘’The tragedy of the North today is that the only industry left is politics, and politics alone has never grown any society.
We have to re-grow Borno State, we have to re-grow the north, we have to re-grow Nigeria. ‘’We have no industries, agriculture has declined and our own children have now turned to violence as a means of livelihood. Your Excellency, in ACF we have decided that we will not talk too much politics. We decided to focus on something else, we are going to start a programme of developing small-scale agro-industries across the north.” The forum also condemned the attack on innocent farmers earning their legitimate means of livelihood around Zabarmari, describing it as barbaric and inhumane.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the forum, Amb Shehu Malami, delivered a condolence message and prayed for the restoration of peace in Borno and northern Nigeria. In his remarks, Governor Zulum said recent killings of farmers and other attacks in the state notwithstanding, statewide records on the 27 local government areas since 2011, indicate clearly that President Muhammadu Buhari has still performed better in handling Borno’s security challenges. He said: “From statewide statistics on affairs in the 27 local councils since 2011, the fact is that despite the recent happenings in Borno State, the security situation there and, indeed, that of the entire North East is still far better under Buhari, and this is based on records.
‘’For instance, unlike the years before Buhari when a number of local governments were no-go-areas, we now have citizens, led by our traditional rulers, safely back to Bama, Gwoza, Askira-Uba, Dikwa, Ngala, Monguno, Kukawa, Damboa, Konduga, Mafa, all of which no one could visit, let alone live there. ‘’Our emirs were all in exile. Today, Bama is coming back to life and so is Askira-Uba, Damboa, Gwoza and others. Life is even returning to Baga. ‘’This was impossible before Buhari. In fact, it was not possible to move a few kilometers out of Maiduguri. Insurgents were so bold to attack and take over military facilities like the army barracks at Monguno, Bama, Giwa Barracks and Multinational Joint Task Force Headquarters at Baga to mention just a few.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
’There were daily attacks, bomb blasts in many parts of Maiduguri, the most populated part of the state but all of these have stopped under Buhari. These are the records and no one can dispute these records.’’ The governor, however, indicated that it was human nature to be more concerned about current realities than comparing the past and present.
“The insurgents, by their nature, always want to attract publicity which is very strategic for terror propaganda, so they resort to attacking our communities and running away and, of course, this worries us,” Zulum added. The governor said the people would remain optimistic and keep doing their part in efforts to find sustainable peace in the state. Zulum thanked the elders and all groups who paid similar visits to Borno in show of solidarity and support to citizens with humanitarian needs.
