complication, miscommunication - a. beauvillier
Popping in with another Beau fic! I wasn’t sure who to write this one about for the longest time, so it was on the back burner for a while, but I think it works really well with him. Let me know what you think - hop into my inbox, please reblog it if you liked reading! (I also love reading the tags.) I love getting feedback!
word count: 3k+
The offseason was never a good time for anyone who was unsigned, and Anthony Beauvillier was no exception. After a second-round loss to the Hurricanes in the playoffs, he was taking some time off before leaving New York to spend the summer in Montréal. “Maja,” he called, looking over at the couch to where his girlfriend of a year and a half sat curled up on the other side, seemingly engrossed in a book. Anthony chuckled. “Maja,” he said a little louder. She made a noncommittal noise. “Maja Mitsuko Okabe.”
Maja snapped her book shut, looking up at him with panic in her eyes. “What? What is it? What’s wrong?”
He snorted. “Does something have to be wrong for me to talk to the woman I love?”
“You full-named me,” Maja shrugged, tucking her feet beneath her on the couch cushion. “Doesn’t usually happen.”
Anthony searched his mind, frantically trying to come up with some excuse for interrupting her, but not coming up with anything that would sound very convincing. “I was just wondering...if you had booked your flights yet for the summer.”
Maja narrowed her eyes; she clearly wasn’t buying it. “Yeah, booked them yesterday. Air Canada nonstop from LaGuardia to Montréal.” She had requested the time off two weeks ago, and would have heard back sooner had it not been for a staffing change in the HR department of the green energy firm where she worked as an electrical engineer. “I’ll try to get a Friday off sometime in August, come up for a long weekend.”
“I’d like that,” he said. Of course I’d like it,” he thought. Why wouldn’t I like it? Why did I even say that?
“Something’s on your mind, Beau,” Maja said softly. And, like almost every other time she said so, she was right.
“Yeah,” he sighed. There wasn’t really any use trying to keep it from her. “I’m not sure if the team’s going to give me a qualifying offer.”
Maja shifted towards him on the couch, propping her head up on one arm. “And who told you that?”
“Nobody, really,” Beau said, shrugging. “It’s just a bad feeling I have. My season wasn’t bad, but I still underperformed, and I know Trotz and Lou were looking for me to step up in terms of goals. Playmaking isn’t everything.” Anthony’s voice dropped. “I know I obviously wouldn’t be able to do anything until I know if they’ll extend an offer, but…” He paused. “My agent’s heard some interest from other teams. Guess they just want to throw their hats in the ring if it comes to that.”
Maja played with the clasp on her bracelet, the same one Anthony had gotten her for their one-year anniversary. “Where?”
“Winnipeg, Minnesota, I think he might have mentioned something about Edmonton.”
“Oilers, huh?” Maja said carefully. “Playing with McDavid, that could be cool.”
Beau made a face. “I mean, yeah, it would be, but…” He trailed off. “But that’s in Edmonton. It’s thousands of miles away. I’d hate having to leave the team, I wouldn’t get to play with Mat anymore. And I don’t know where that would leave us.”
“What do you mean, you don’t know where that would leave us? I’d go with you, I thought you knew that.” Maja stopped playing with her bracelet. She said it like it was the most obvious thing in the world, like there was never a possibility she would have considered anything else.
Anthony turned to her. “But you love it here. You love your job, you’re doing important stuff.”
And that much was true; Maja loved feeling like she was using her knowledge for good, and her coworkers were some of the best she’d ever had. But she loved Tito more. “I am, but I can find a job pretty much anywhere, Beau. It’s important to me that we stay together.”
“But what if I do go back to Canada?” Anthony said, one hand running through his hair. “Your whole family’s in Boston, I wouldn’t want to take you away from that. And you don’t know anyone there, and I wouldn’t want you to have to move to an entirely new country just for me.”
“It’s really not all that different, Beau,” Maja said, stiffening. “I’m an engineer. I can get a job anywhere, I might have to get a new license but it’s not that hard. Weather wouldn’t be a shock, I’ve dealt with snow my whole life. And unless you went to Montréal, it’s not even like I’d have a language barrier.”
“I know,” he said, “but I don’t want you to feel like it’s an obligation for you to pick up your whole life and move just because of me.”
Maja stood up abruptly, nervously running her hands over her jeans. “It’s starting to sound like you wouldn’t want me to come, Anthony,” she snapped.
He screwed his eyes shut. She didn’t call him by his whole name unless she was really, really fed up with him. “It’s not that, I just—”
“You just what?” Maja cut him off. “Because whether or not it’s what you meant by it, Beau, the way you worded it makes me think you’re not serious about this. About us. And I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that I am, so I’m going to need you to do some real soul-searching and get back to me about how you really feel, because it sounds like we’re working on a deadline here.” She turned on her heel, grabbed her jacket, and walked out the door.
---
Anthony didn’t like that they weren’t talking. Granted, it had only been a day and a half, but it was rare that he and Maja went that long without FaceTiming or calling each other, even when he was on a road trip. It just wasn’t something they did. And it also wasn’t like he had to think about his answer, about how serious he was about his relationship with Maja. It was one of the most important things in his life. But, just like the fight that had led him to this moment, pacing around in his kitchen with a rapidly burning piece of toast in the toaster, he was worried. Worried to talk to her, worried he’d seem like he was being pushy if he did, worried he’d seem like he didn’t care if he didn’t. He was tempted to call Mat, or even Jordan, but didn’t want the inevitable tongue-lashing that either was sure to give him. He knew he had to fix it, but he didn’t know how.
Anthony lay on his bed later that evening, his phone on speaker next to him, playing nervously with his hands. Sometimes, even though he was almost 24, there were things he just couldn’t go to his friends for. Mat was his best friend and he loved him, but he needed someone else for this. He needed his mom. “I know my flight’s supposed to leave in a few days, but Maman...I don’t know what to do. I don’t want to leave things like this.”
“Then you don’t,” his mom shot back over the phone, her French terse. “I raised you better than this, Anthony. You don’t leave the women you love unsure of where your relationship stands, where the two of you stand. You love her.” She said it more like a statement.
“More than anything,” he replied morosely.
“Then you stay, you go over and talk to her. And if that means you’re in New York for a few more days, then so be it. Your dad and I can wait. Québec will still be here when you’re done. What’s more important right now is Maja, and that you fix this.”
Anthony groaned, his head hitting the pillow. “You’re right.”
“What was that?” she replied, even though he knew she had heard him just fine.
“You’re right, Maman. It doesn’t matter if it wasn’t what I meant. I need to fix this.”
He could see her nodding on the other end of the line. “You do. Go to her.” She had barely hing up the phone before Anthony was frantically tugging on his shoes and stumbling out the door.
Anthony was outside of her door less than half an hour later; it would have been earlier, but New York traffic didn’t seem to care that it was past 10 PM. He knocked on her door frantically; he could have used his key, but it just didn’t feel right. He heard her pad down the hallway towards the living room. “I’m coming.” She opened the door, her mouth slightly agape when she saw who it was. “I thought you were maintenance. The bathroom faucet’s been leaky.”
The corner of his mouth twitched up. “At,” he checked his watch, “10:12 PM?”
Maja shrugged. “Night shift?” She stepped aside to let him in. “I’m guessing you want to talk.” Maja was intuitive; even more than that, though, she knew Anthony better than anyone. He didn’t like to let conflict sit, knowing it would only get worse with time. She walked over to her couch, gesturing for him to sit, her arms crossed. “So talk.”
“I wanted to say I’m sorry for what I said the other day, for making you feel insecure in our relationship and for letting you doubt how committed I am. You didn’t deserve that.”
“Do you get it, though?” Maja questioned. “Do you get why it hurt me so much?”
Anthony did. He knew he did, so why was it so hard to admit it? He settled for a stiff nod.
She sighed. “Because it made me feel like you weren’t as serious about us, our relationship, as I am. I read your cautioning me against moving with you if you ever got traded as you not wanting me to, which made me feel like you just had no interest in building a life with me, in taking the next step. And that’s what hurt so badly, because I knew the second you mentioned it that that’s something I’d do in a heartbeat for you.” Maya looked over his head, her fixing her eyes on a picture of Anthony from his first home game, trying to collect her words. “It seemed like you didn’t see us lasting, nothing long-term that would require those kinds of sacrifices and choices to be made. Almost like I had wasted my time, this past year and a half, on someone who couldn’t care less if I stayed or went.”
Anthony leaned forward, hesitantly reaching for her hands, wrapping his fingers around hers when she didn’t pull back. “I know how my words came out was wrong, and I take full responsibility for that. I shouldn’t have said it like that, but I think I did because I was worried, and didn’t want to assume you’d be willing to do something so drastic as move thousands of miles and potentially to a whole new country just because I asked you.”
“Relationships mean compromise and sacrifice,” Maja said. “And I didn’t think it was fair for me to feel like I was the only one doing either.”
“You weren’t,” Anthony shook his head. “You aren’t.”
“I never got what you meant about worrying about the distance,” Maja said. She scrunched her nose. “Okay, I take that back like halfway. I got what you were saying about it being hard. It would be, of course it would be. But it’s not like we haven’t done it before. You’re gone a couple times a month during the season, and then most of the summer in Québec apart from when I could get off work for a week or two. And sure, it was rough, but we got through it. So I heard you not wanting me to come with you, and me not seeing a need to stay here, and didn’t see where you saw us going. If you saw us going somewhere. That’s what hurt the most, I think.”
“Moving without ever having lived together just seemed like a big step. I didn’t want to push you into something you weren’t ready for, but I would have hated it just as much if suddenly you were off in a new state or country all alone in an apartment some place where you didn’t know anybody. It wouldn’t have been fair.”
Anthony had a point, Maja thought, as she moved her thumb back and forth over the back of his hand. “Have you thought about that, though? Things going forward, moving in together, all of that?”
He met her eyes, and now it was his time to stare at her like she had just asked the world’s most obvious question, like there was no possible parallel universe where she didn’t already know the answer. “Absolutely, Maja. I’ve thought about everything.”
“Everything?” she asked, her thumb stopping momentarily. “What’s everything?”
Anthony smiled softly at her, wrapping his arm around her waist and pulling her gently into his side. “Everything means everything. Moving in together. Getting a nice house in Garden City, or wherever we’ve settled by then. The day I finally get to put a ring on your finger,” he said, absentmindedly rubbing the fourth finger on her left hand. “Getting to wake up to your beautiful face every day, and never having to leave. Taking our kids to visit your grandparents in Japan, trying to figure out how to raise them trilingualy.”
“Really?” Maja laughed, a watery laugh filled with disbelief and hope and unfettered joy somehow bound into a single noise. “You’ve thought about that?”
“Of course I have,” he said simply.
“You said kids, so it’s going to be multiple?” Anthony hummed his agreement. “How many were you thinking?”
He tilted his head. “I like three. Seems like it’d work well. But that would obviously be up to you,” he chuckled. “Not like I’d be the pregnant one.”
Maja couldn’t remember the last time her heart felt this full. The way he spoke about their future — the house and the wedding and the kids — so easily and freely made Mja nearly positive that it had been something he had been thinking about for a while. “Three sounds good.”
---
5 years, $20 mil, the text read. Anthony didn’t really care that he wasn’t supposed to tell anyone, not until they made the news official. But he had to tell Maja, tell her they were staying out, had to let her breathe a little easier and stop worrying about having to type up a two week’s notice and figure out how to apply for a Canadian visa. He knew he wasn’t supposed to tell anyone, but Maja was more important than that, and she deserved to know, and if that got him a slap on the wrist from the team, then so be it. He looked down at his watch; it was half past 5, so Maja was on the subway back to her apartment if she hadn’t already arrived. He hung a U-turn, changing directions from his place to hers. This wasn’t something he wanted to wait for. It didn’t take him long to pull into the visitor’s parking at her apartment building, muscle memory guiding him into the elevator and up to the third floor.
“Coming!” Maja said as he knocked on the door. She flung her arms around him as the door swung open, her toes barely touching the floor. “I’m so proud of you, love,” she whispered into his shoulder, her voice muffled by his sweater. Stepping aside, she let him into her living room, where he was greeted by a counter filled with take-out containers. “I might have assumed you’d come by,” Maja admitted, “so I went out to that Indian place you like and picked up some stuff. Figured you’d be hungry.”
He wrapped his arms around her waist from behind as she spooned out the rice and butter chicken. “Thank you,” he said, pressing a kiss against her cheek. “You’re always one step ahead.” Dinner was a quiet affair, Anthony cleaning up their plates and putting the leftovers in the fridge before joining Maja on the couch, her back pressed up against his chest as the Good Place played on the TV.
“I really am proud of you, you know,” she said softly, twisting her head to look up at him. “I know it’s something you worked really hard for and were worried about, and I’m so glad it worked out for you.”
He squeezed her thigh in appreciation. “Thanks, babe. And again, I’m sorry about how I told you, how I interpreted everything and spoke too soon. It wasn’t fair to me and it wasn’t fair to you.”
“Don’t keep beating yourself up about it,” Maja said. “You’re right that it wasn’t a good move, but you apologized and took responsibility for it, and that’s what really matters. As long as you weren’t just trying to butter me up when you talked about the future.”
Anthony knew it was tongue-in-cheek and that she was teasing him, if the half-smirk on her face was anything to go by, but he shook his head all the same. “Of course it wasn’t. I meant every word.” They sat in silence for a few minutes before he spoke again. “Don’t resign your lease.” He knew that she had almost a month until she had to give the papers to her landlord, but she’d also been toying around with the idea of moving to a place a little closer to her work.
Maja looked up at him in surprise, her eyes wide. “Don’t resign my lease?”
He nodded. “Move in with me, I can fly down for a few days to help whenever you decide you want to. Move in with me, let’s start that future now.” If he was being honest, it had been something Anthony had been thinking about for months. He just finally got the courage to ask.
“When can I start?”

LONG DAY
Marius had called off his night with the boys when Y/N had come home from work, shoulders curved under the weight of the shitty day she had had and a long sigh passing past her lips. He had been on the phone with one of them — Dominic, most likely — and she had barely picked up his words as she had been left with energies enough only to focus on one task at a time.
“Love?”
Her hand missed the hall stand and her coat fell to the floor with a soft thud, and had it been a different day, she probably would have cared. But not tonight.
He reached her in the hallway just as she was taking off her shoes, but it was the scratching of the dog’s nails on the floor as she most likely scrambled down the couch to hurry behind her favorite human that drew a smile upon her face.
“Long day?” he asked, taking a step closer so that he could tilt her chin up.
She knew he could read the exhaustion in her eyes and while she usually hid it well — or could generally handle it better —, she had been left too drained to even try and attempt to put on a mask. “You could say that,” she chuckled instead. Tired as she was, she couldn’t stop her head from leaning into the hand he had moved onto her cheek and she looked up at him.
“Do you want to vent?”
He took another step closer and before she could pick up with him, he had his arms wrapped around her waist as his head tilted down to rest on the crown of hers. Words failed her as she found herself trying to sigh the exhaustion off of her and after a while, when the dog sniffed her leg and pressed her nose against her pants, she shook her head no.
“Are you leaving at the same time as usual?” she asked softly, lips moving against the soft cotton of his shirt.
She had missed having him home; coming back from work and finding him tinkering with stuff in the garage or chilling on the couch or even trying his best in the kitchen was a million times better than meeting him behind a screen, with miles and miles separating her from the location of his current mission. And while she didn’t mind him taking time for himself to meet up with his buddies, she wasn’t exactly in the mood to be left alone tonight.
The way he said that nah made her smile and exhale loudly from her nose, but right then, he pulled back to look down at her. “I told them I’m not going. You look like you need me more than they do tonight anyway.” When she frowned, he cupped her face and gently shook it from side to side a couple of times as he smiled. “Let me be the caring husband for once,” he chuckled, pecked her lips, and finally pulled back completely.
Maja jumped up on her and her weight suddenly dropping against her tore a ugh! from Y/N’s lips.
“Yes, I missed you, too,” she cooed, hand scratching underneath the dog’s chin.
Maja had always been a great helping hand when it came to relaxing. She greeted you with her one-year-old-puppy energy, but then it was almost as though she were a sponge for anything you wanted to kick out of your system. A look at her, a boop of her wet nose against her, the happy wagging of her tail, and suddenly the world felt lighter and the room she was in turned brighter and more spacious. Most likely just an illusion, but certainly one she always welcomed with open arms, whether her man was at home as well or away for work.
“Do you want me to cook you something? I thought it’d be your usual pizza night but…”
“No, I just need to unwind.” Eyes still on the dog, she scratched behind her ears before allowing her back down on the floor. “I just want to soak in the tub until someone comes and tells me I don’t have to go to work tomorrow.”
Marius’ deep chuckle made her smile and when Maja scurried away to go curl up among her toys once again, he put an arm around her shoulders and pulled her into his side as he accompanied her to the stairs. “You’re the owner, no one can stop you,” he whispered in her ear before picking her up and walking up the stairs.
She laughed for a moment at that, before she pressed closer to him and left a kiss on his cheek. “You know, I’m tired but I can still walk.”
His Let me pamper you for once, woman! was repeated a second time when he put her with her feet back down on the tiled floor of the bathroom and turned on the faucet of the tub. “I know how to do this,” he half-smiled as he poured body wash into the tub and then turned to look at her.
Then, when he straightened up, he turned towards her and all he needed to communicate was a look. She stretched one hand out for him to grab while her other one came up to remove the hairpin that had kept her hair away from her face for the whole day. A throbbing headache had started spreading right in that area and she felt the skin of her scalp was tense and sore.
Marius’ fingers were deft on the buttons of her blouse and then on that of her pants. He worked on her clothes in silence but then, when his gaze settled on hers as his hands slid underneath the cotton of her blouse and then down her shoulders, pushing the garment down with the movement, the smile he sent her way almost felt like a breath of fresh air.
He undressed her and when he took her hand in his to help her get into the bubble-filled bathtub, she let him do.
“Thank you,” she hummed.
Her eyes closed of their own accord, eyelids suddenly heavy and muscles ready to relax in the warm embrace of the water. She didn’t remember the last time she took a bath — surely months before, most likely to help Marius wind down after a fight or a long mission, she couldn’t be sure — and although she preferred to stick to her much quicker routine in the shower, she found herself basking in the feeling of extreme relaxation this moment brought along.
But then she startled with a gasp when her husband spoke from behind her as he knelt down to pull her hair out of the way of the water. “So, how did this morning go?” he asked.
She had imagined he had left the room when silence had fallen, but part of her was glad and almost even relieved that he had stayed.
Her answer was a groan as her eyes fell shut once again. She had told him about the ‘bad thing’ she had done and he had joked for a moment to try and lift her spirits at the prospect that lay ahead. And while that whispered Schwiegermonster of his had made her chuckle the day before on the phone, she had found herself being annoyed at that unexpected change in routines.
“What do you think?” she huffed, a second before his fingers on her scalp tore a soft moan of relief from deep down her throat.
“I could take care of the problem for you,” he proposed, lips grazing against her temple as the comb he had in one hand started combing through her hair. “Give me one morning with her.”
“Yeah, sure,” she laughed, opening her eyes and tilting her head back a bit so that she could stare into his eyes. They were almost twinkling under the lights of the bathroom, and the grin he had on his face made her lazily shake her head from side to side before she let him go back to combing through her hair. “She’d be able to get in touch with your superiors and have you called back to England in a heartbeat.”
He hummed in response. “She’s free to try.”
Silence filled the room again. She allowed herself to enjoy the gentle scalp massage he was giving her, the comb now forgotten on the floor after he had brushed the rare knots out of her hair. It was warm and cozy and the more he worked on her, the more her headache faded and her body seemed to relax.
At some point, outside the closed door of the bathroom, she heard Maja frisking down the corridor, ready to fall asleep in her bed right at the end of it.
“If I were to take my mother to work and come straight back home tomorrow,” she started, voice slow and low, her mind closer to being asleep than it was to being awake, “would you spend the day in bed with me? I feel like I need to sleep for half an eternity.” Her words stumbled one upon the other as she spoke, but she didn’t care, for he seemed to understand her just fine.
“Of course,” he hummed, his lips brushing against her temple once again, her right one this time, and his hands trailed down her arms until he had her hands in his. “Just directly call her a taxi and stay home.”
His words were tempting and when his fingers tickled her lower belly, she found herself giggling with her eyes closed, the back of her head resting against his shoulder. Before long, she mumbled out a fuck it and turned her head to the side to press a kiss to his lips.
“I might as well do just that,” she grumbled before she sat up when he moved around to grab her sponge.

Bonus - WitW cut scenes and notes
So, as with most writers, I have a lot of cut scenes. Writing the The Woman in the Woods, my word count on cut scenes has reached 20k. Although that's probably inaccurate 'coz I ended up putting some of it back in, either parts of it or whole paragraphs. But for Chapter 12, there were two scenes that almost made it to the final version.
If you haven't read my fanfic and plan to, please don't read this because this spoils not only part 1 but part 2 as well. Here's the link in case you're interested.
Oh, and to those who plan to re-read the whole thing, you might notice minor changes. Some are corrections, some are lines I accidentally deleted or realize later on that I've forgotten to put in...
...such as why Sasha was holding out on moving in with Saul (they agreed not to do anything rash for six months).
Scene 1 - Right after they kiss
Because Saul's still not well (very, very low blood), he gets lightheaded and takes a second.
“Just breathe,” Sasha said.
“I have to tell you something.” His head leaning on the couch, he tilted his face toward her. “And you have to remember that I’m convalescing right now.”
The smile on her face disappeared. “What?”
He took another deep breath and blew it out through his mouth. “I… saw you naked.”
She smirked at that. “Yeah, right.”
“I did.”
She then frowned. “How could you have—” and then she gasped. “You were awake!”
“I didn’t see a lot. Just calves, and legs,” he was quick to point out. “And ass—but very, very briefly.”
Her jaw was still on the floor, unwilling to pick it up.
“Should I have not told you?”
It seemed she didn’t hear. “If you were awake, then you were aware that I dropped blood in your mouth.”
“I thought it was a dream.” She didn’t look convinced.
“How briefly, really, did you see?” Maybe he didn’t answer fast enough that she slapped his arm and repeated louder, “How briefly?”
He muttered an ouch even though it didn’t hurt. “Like a second. Half a second!”
Sky then comes in the house and calls for "Maja". After Sasha responds with "Out here" this happens.
Then to him, she tilted her head. “A second, huh. Well, we can make it longer the next time.”
He was beaming at her when Sky emerged from the backdoor, who was visibly surprised at finding him there.
I ended up taking this scene out because, when I re-read it, it dragged the scene--the kiss was already a happy ending, though I really wanted to address her getting naked and Saul seeing that.
Scene 2 (Epilogue) - Farah's visit
One of the ideas I have for ending the story was for Sasha to say something like, "I think I'll open a school" (for witches). So the first draft of the epilogue begins with her jittery because she's about to give a two-hour lecture (which should culminate with her having confidence enough to maybe open a school). But as I was writing that, I realized that she's right to be jittery because she's declaring herself a blood witch, and the scope of what that would mean, standing there and doing that, I had to rethink because I was hoping the epilogue was just 1k and should just be light and fluffy. So, I thought it might be better if the lecture was just an idea she contemplates doing. Scene below is when Farah visits.
“What is it about? Should I be concerned?” Saul asked.
“No,” the fairy said, though she seemed to reconsider. Then, “No, I don’t think so.”
Saul frowned at her, just as Sasha came down.
“Oh, hi Farah,” she said while slinging on her backpack.
“I’m glad I caught you,” she eyed Saul, silently indicating that it was a private conversation. But he was unwilling to leave.
“Saul,” Sasha said, giving him a nudge to the ribs. “Come on, hun.”
The two women then sat on the living room while Saul made himself scarce by the kitchen, doing his best to overhear the conversation.
“I just have an idea I wanna run by you,” Farah began. “What do you think about giving a lecture, just two hours or longer if you like, about red witches.”
Sasha didn't expect this at all. Hearing this turned something inside of her dead cold with fear, just the idea of standing in front of a roomful of strangers and declaring that she was a blood witch. The last time she did that, her kind was wiped out.
Maybe reading where her thoughts went, Farah said, “You don’t have to say that you’re one. We can just say that you’re an expert on the subject. You’ve studied it all your life, their ways, their customs."
She was already shaking her head, seeing how this would be taken—what were her credentials? Her history? When the students go home, would they tell their parents about the “expert” who spoke so personally about these witches, and would they then hound the school for this lecturer? Also, what would it do to the school?
“I think it’s a bad idea, Farah.”
“I think it’s important that our students get informed as much as they could, especially about subjects where the common knowledge is just utterly wrong.”
Sasha blew out a nervous breath. Her hands had gone clammy and it was because this was the very thing that made doing it so tempting. But the repercussions attached to it, was it worth it? Would Alfea even be able to stand it? What if it destroyed the school?
She looked at the kitchen and, almost immediately, caught Saul’s eye. He had heard everything.
“Just think about it,” Farah placed a hand on top of hers.
She looked at it and just nodded.
“I do have a question,” she said just as Farah retreated her hand. “Have you found out what Rosalind meant? When she said my kind endanger this world?”
But the woman only shook her head.
When she left, Saul was back in the living room with Sasha still sitting on the couch.
“You should do it.”
Sasha chewed her lips and looked up at him, but didn’t say anything.
Then in the airport, the scene is the same as in the final version, but as they say goodbye, Saul mentions the lecture again and she just says she'll think about it. I stopped there, had a break, and was about to write the closing paragraphs but it just didn't sit well with me. I thought that even if it's something that's left hanging, something that a reader could decide on, the story still doesn't end with my original plan of her wanting to open a witch school. Also, even if it's left hanging, story-wise, the logical conclusion is that she does it because that's the brave thing to do. But doing it could legitimately put her in jeopardy and might actually destroy Alfea (I could imagine angry parents complaining about it, which includes royalty, and shutting down the school). It's an epilogue, and even if I'm not covering that part of the story, I didn't want it to be the last thing a reader thinks about.
So, I ended up cutting it all out and changing the purpose of Farah's visit. I thought it worked out much better because the epilogue should just focus on Saul and Sasha, and also hint that Saul has a better, more honest relationship with Sky.
Notes
I tend to not write any of my ideas down (I do that by writing the story already). But whenever I have a problem with a story, instead of using a digital notepad, I actually use pen and paper and write all of the questions I need answered and put in all answers I could think of (and why that won't work). I was doing that today for this other thing I'm writing (it's not a fanfic, sadly, but my main character is based off RJC), and found my notes from writing Part 2 of WitW. Since I'm making this post, thought it would be fun to include it too.
These were made after writing Ch 6. Yes, my handwriting is terrible. I think only I can read them. But if you're able to read them, then you must be a nurse (to those who aren't, nurses' handwriting aren't bad, but they read doctor's notes all the time). I was at this for a couple of hours. I think ch 7, 8, 9 are on point to what I ended up writing. Some changes in Ch 10, but epilogue is totally different.

Hi so I've read 2 my chem sports AUs recently (All We Need Is Daylight by Helena_Hathaway and Getting the Gold by frankiesin) and I loved them surprisingly a lot because My Chemical Romance and various sports are not something you'd expect go together. I'm wondering if you know of any other sports AUs?
Hi Nonny!
There's a few Sports AUs I know and if you don't mind High School Sports AUs, there's quite a few of those as well!
Sports AUs
All We Need is Daylight by Helena_Hathaway, Frank/Gerard, 240k [WIP], Explicit. Frank is thrust all too suddenly into a new life, one where he's not warmly welcomed. He's the best goddamn hockey player he knows, though, and he's not going to let anyone take that away from him. Or at least, not until his world comes tumbling down.
Getting the Gold by frankiesin, Mikey/Pete, 9k, General Audiences. It's Mikey's first time as an Olympic coach, and he's navigating the new role pretty well until he meets the men's swim coach. Pete's gorgeous, funny, and entertaining as hell, but Mikey's pretty sure he's already got a boyfriend. Also featuring Mikey and Lindsey being Super Bros, and way too many baby athletes in need of supervision.
you wanna get it for free by akamine_chan, Ray/Mikey, 2k, Explicit. Ray's a wrestler, you see...
Pages In Your Passport by inlovewithnight, Mikey/Pete, 15k, Explicit. Pete pursued soccer instead of music. He has a good long run in the game. Then in 2010, he meets this guy in a band.
The Circuit by stoplightglow, Frank/Gerard, 24k, Teen And Up Audiences. In the world of competitive motorcycle racing, nothing is more prestigious than the Grand Circuit Tour. Americans everywhere gather to watch as the twelve best racers in the nation compete for the title of Circuit Champion and $100,000. Gerard Way is no stranger to the race. When he was a teenager, his name was practically legend - but after disappearing without explanation six years ago, he's become little more than a relic of the past. Now, at age twenty-six, Gerard is back on the Circuit with something to prove. It's Frank Iero's first year on the tour, but he's more than ready. No one has seen a kid blast through the ranks so fast since Gerard Way first appeared on the scene a decade ago. With a cocky attitude and the whole country swooning over him, nothing can slow him down. The stakes have never been so high. Welcome to the Fourteenth Annual Grand Circuit Tour.
Down And Dirty by dear_monday, Frank/Gerard, 3k, Explicit. Gerard's own beloved cherry-red Harley has pedigree in fucking spades, sure, but she's seen better days, and she just doesn't have the power to outrun Iero and that revolting custom paint job. The matching helmet painted to look like a jack-o-lantern is just too much. An AU wherein the boys are dirty bikers, inspired by the recently-released photos from the Japanese Rolling Stone shoot.
shut up and drive by Trojie, uglowian, Patrick/Mikey/Pete, 139k, Teen And Up Audiences. Pete Wentz is the grid girl, Andy Hurley loves him (not like that), and Jared Leto is the bad guy. A.K.A.: the bandom The Fast and the Furious AU that literally no one asked for.
Another Cog In The Murder Machine by ace_writez, Ray/Mikey, 3k [WIP], General Audiences. Mikey's life is set. He's going to get a basketball scholarship for university and then play in the big leagues. All he has to do is get team captain his last year of high school. But he runs into some competition when another good player also tries out. Suddenly he's not so sure he's going to make it. Ray is also trying for a scholarship. As the star quarterback of Belleville High for three years, he's gunning for a fourth. When a situation at home suddenly drags him down, and a certain boy at school catches his eye, he finds himself at a crossroads. Two boys. Two sports. One school, and one story.
Day Seven: Half Dressed - Frerard by LeatherlipsIero, Frank/Gerard, 3k, Mature. Frank reached out his hand for the stranger to shake, "I'm Frank, let me buy you a drink as an apology?" He smiled again when the stranger grabbed his strong and callused hand with his own soft one. "Thank you, but it's my fault, honestly." The strange and pretty man tried to explain but Frank didn't care. "I insist." He said and sent the beautiful stranger a half smirk with half-lidded bedroom eyes, which had the poor boy blushing in seconds. Score.
Olympians by krissykane, Frank/Gerard, 3k, General Audiences. Frank is a shooter who has (somehow) made it to his second Olympic games. There he joins the crowd at a fencing event and sees a certain Team USA fencer for the first time.
Take One For The Team (Excuse Me If I'm Rude) by frenchpirate (Whiskey_n_speed), Mikey/Pete, 25k, Explicit. “So, your coach,” Gabe started, change of subject, thank god. “Yeah, what about him?” Mikey asked and glanced over at Pete who was heading towards the coach locker rooms, dragging a net of footballs after him. “You never told me he was hot. I’m pretty sure that’s withholding indispensable information. I should’ve signed up for the soccer team.” He said halfway jokingly, and William scoffed and rolled his eyes. “What, he’s not-“ “He so is. He’s like totally – small and handy,” He made a smooth explanatory hand-motion. “I want to fit him in my pocket.” * (Or; twenty eight scenes about skipping school, douchebag friends, post-college parties and way too much soccer)
Boxer!Fic by iamdali, Frank/Gerard, 47k, Explicit, General Audiences. After med school, Gerard had this idea of what life would be like. The idea now probably seems more than ridiculous, but still it’s what he clung to in order to drag himself through those gruelling morning hours after an all nighter of studying or writing some preposterously long paper on some disease or medical break through or why whatever part of the human body does whatever it does, and what happens when it doesn’t.
It's Not A Side Effect Of The Triple Axel (I'm Thinking It Must Be Love) by mizubyte (b_dsaint), Mikey/Pete, 10k, Teen And Up Audiences. If not for Alicia, Mikey never would have stepped on to the ice, let alone become a figure skater. Now, over 15 years later, Vancouver is Mikey's last chance for Olympic Gold. If he doesn't get distracted by snowboarder Pete Wentz, that is.
If The Skates Don't Fit by halfeatenmoon, Lindsey/Gerard, 12k, Teen And Up Audiences. Lyn-Z thought her rollerderby team might have a chance of winning some games this year, until she discovered that the new girl she'd recruited to the team was actually a man named Gerard. With a week to go until the first match against their long-time rivals, the Cobras, Lyn-Z and her teammates instead steal one of the Cobras' players - Maja, who has been feeling underappreciated since her side was joined by a new star. Maja's a great player, but it's a challange to learn to skate with a new teammate with only a week to go, especially when she still has some unresolved issues with her old captain.
Split lips hurt by toxic_fox, Frank/Gerard, 769 words, Teen And Up Audiences. Every Thursday, at six o’ clock sharp, frank goes boxing. He loves the adrenaline, the rush he gets from fighting, the blood, the pain. He kind of likes the kind medic as well.
Uppercut by mcrhomo, Frank/Gerard, 3k [WIP], Teen And Up Audiences. Frank is dealing with a lot in his life, including body dysmorphia. When he signs up for a boxing class to lose weight, he meets Gerard, and his whole life is turned several different ways (for better and for worse).
I Believe You're The Enemy (Game On) by imanemostan, Frank/Gerard, 2k, Mature. Constant affairs kept secret by frank and gerard, on different laser tag teams playing against each other. weirdly enough, both their schools have an official laser tag team. How will they ever be able to keep this a secret?
I Just Want You by Bridgetti, Frank/Gerard, 2k, General Audiences. Frank teaches Gerard to skate.
It's All In the Game by happilysurviving (orphan_account), Frank/Gerard, 46k [WIP], Mature. Even jocks have issues. Especially the closeted ones who have friends they have to kick off their football teams. And it gets even worse when they have to kick them off because of a homophobic coach. But of course that's only the beginning as this is Dan Howell and he always has to have larger problems on top of the ones everyone else would believe to be impossible to handle. Having Frank as his best friend certainly doesn't help or the head gossip guru in town as his mother but it could be worse, right? I mean he could be in love with an opposing team's quarterback... Oh wait.
Frerard Football Team AU For Which I Could Not Think of a Title by franks_hands, Frank/Gerard, 5k, Teen And Up Audiences. In the locker room and at practices, Frank was noisy, bordering on obnoxious. He seemed to bounce off the walls sometimes. He didn’t know about personal space.
of cute boys and rollerskates by etselec, Mikey/Pete, 1k, General Audiences. “I’m teaching you how to skate,” Mikey nearly fell as he removed Pete’s arms away from him. He squeezed his hand instead, “so our next date it won’t be as awkward.” “Date?” Pete asked. “Well, we’re holding hands already, aren’t we?” Mikey smiled at him.
Hand in Mine, Into Your Icy Blues by sundrowned, Frank/Gerard, 28k, General Audiences. Gerard is the captain of the hockey team and his overbearing father is the coach. When a new boy named Frank joins the team, Gerard has to decide weather to follow his father's orders to stay away from the boy or choose his own path.
Skating In A Ttutu by runaway_killjoy, Frank/Gerard, 51k, Teens And Up Audiences, Explicit. Frank has to move towns with his mom. He's disheartened to realize that teenagers are judgemental and manipulative no matter where you go. And no one gets judged quite as bad as the ballerina/skater boy who isn't even 5ft. Skater boy AU prompt, Frerard
Powderpuff by Gorgeous Nerd (gorgeousnerd), Frank/Gerard, 2k, Explicit. It isn't like Frank's opposed to powderpuff football. The timing's just kind of bad.
Get Up And Go by inlovewithnight, 6k, Teen And Up Audiences. Mikey Way: Ultramarathon Runner.

Rewatching TMNT 2012 also gave me extra ammunition against that stupid "Splinter raised the turtles as soldiers" take.
Because...???
1. He admitted he didn't teach them to fight together, just how to fight and defend themselves as individuals. Teamwork is pretty important in an army, ya know...?
2. Part of the turtles' protection was Oroku Saki assuming that Splinter was dead, that Hamato Yoshi died in that fire with Tang Shen. It was only when the news showed a picture of a ninja star with the Hamato family crest on it did Shredder realize that Yoshi was alive and presumably training ninja. If Splinter wanted the turtles to fight against the Shredder in some kind of war, why would he not prepare them to face the Shredder? Why would he be concerned about their safety rather than the element of surprise?
Michelangelo was taught a Foot Clan move by Bradford and went on to teach that move to his brothers. None of them recognized it as a move belonging to Shredder and the Foot Clan. If Splinter was training them to be soldiers in this war against Shredder their entire lives, why wouldn't they know how this guy fights? "Here is this devastating move that the Shredder uses, here is how to defend yourself from it" — because Splinter never planned for them to face Shredder, because Splinter wanted Shredder to think he is dead and not look for him. Because he didn't want to face Oroku Saki.
3. The timeline/motif does not make sense. Why would Hamato Yoshi move to America and adopt four pet turtles? Pet turtles can live for a long time and he got four baby ones. If his plan was to move away and start a ninja army, why get 4 high maintenence pets...? That live for a long time...?? And when he was mutated he decided "Wow. This is comvenient!" and just... continued that plan...??? In the sewers....???? With four infant children that are half turtle also incredibly high maintenence...? And never got more than four kids...??? Brother this is a family of martial arts enthusiasts. Also why get them video games or movies...?
"Well maybe the mutagen made him mad cuz he hates being a furry?" He has a cheese phone and hamster wheel. And cheese popsicles. He is embracing being a furry. Brother probably had a fursuit that burned down in that family-killing fire.
