look i know I talk abt pegoryu all the time BUT there's so much to love about Ryuji outside the context of ships. Like, there's plenty of good characters in p5 but Ryuji steals the show, no contest. He's so kind and selfless. He's the first to give joker a chance. He's not even on particularly good terms with Ann and is pissed off at Kamoshida's creepy behavior on her behalf. When they enter the palace and get attacked, he tries telling to joker to run even though Ryuji himself is being attacked by the guards - he wanted joker to leave him there and was okay with putting himself in harm's way to allow joker an escape. He's not moved to take down kamoshida by his own potential expulsion, or his own anger about their history, but is moved by seeing what kamoshida is doing to other students, particularly shiho. After the kamoshida arc, he doesn't say anything about his own trauma or history with kamoshida, he's just happy that things will be better for Ann. He's the first to forgive makoto after she gets kidnapped by kaneshiro and has generally been a thorn in the phantom thieves' side for weeks. In fact he jumps in front of a moving vehicle to get a taxi to follow the people who took her. He fights with mona and gives a half-hearted apology, but all that animosity is out the window when the group finds mona and haru being harassed by haru's fiance. His entire confidant is about him trying to help the track team, which benefits him in absolutely no way, even after they turned on him for standing up to his abuser. even after the track team themselves physically assault him in an early social link rank. he wanted to get a track scholarship for his mom's sake, not his own. He puts himself in danger to get the lifeboat when shido's palace is sinking. he puts himself in danger and takes an attack from possessed cendrillon in maruki's palace. he gets angry when hearing about joker's past, but doesn't actually seem to have much anger in regards to his own - in fact, consistently through the game he gets angry and moved to defend others while not mustering that same righteous sort of anger for his own sake. Everyone else is his priority. he's the only character who has mistakes in the plot of the game that he owns up to and apologizes for - for getting mad and scaring futaba, and for being preccupied by their fame. he's a momma's boy. he's joker's best friend and right hand man, and more than anyone else he opens up to and confides in joker, to the degree that he has moments like that which occur outside of his confidant whereas nobody else really does (he calls joker through the story several times and confides in him about things like his apprehension abt the current events or how he is sorry he got mad and yelled earlier or even just that he's worried about the kamoshida plan.) the world has been so cruel to him and he still finds so much compassion and selflessness within himself. he's similar to his drunk, abusive dad, with a temper and a reputation for outbursts. but he's a twisted, funhouse mirror representation of that. his anger is justified and sparked by seeing others mistreated. his outbursts were just him standing up for himself and his whole team. and for it he got abandoned and shunned. he's a deconstruction of the people who've hurt him; he's similar to them while also standing for the exact opposite of everything they stand for. he's selfless and kind and driven to protect others even at the cost of his own safety, social standing, or well being. he makes mistakes and owns up to them, then tries to be better. he trusts joker so much. he's been hurt and abused and kicked while he was down and he still wants so badly to help others. as cruel as the world has been to him he doesn't let it embitter him or make him cynical and mean.

Overrall, i like them, they feel more united as a band, but individually i have some ehs.

I'll say it here now: Ichika is the only one that for me feels like a downgrade.

Her old outfit was so cool, no tie, sleeveless shirt, gloves, tied jacket, it showed personality so well.

I like the tie to be honest, and im happy she kept the leg thingies (i have no idea of the name of that), but overall... where's my dumbass loser rebel? Ichika was kind of s rebel and now that shes coming back with confidence to do the stuff she did they're taking it off?

Anyways. At least shes smiling now smh

While i liked the skirt and the tie, the jacket always felt weird for me, dunno why. Plus that transparent keeping the damn keyboard was so bad for my editing stuff smh /hj, now the keyboard is smaller.

I like the blazer more than i like her jacket before, and the tie as a lace looks so cute <3

Props to the new detail on the socks.

I sincerely dont have much to say about her ngl.

I kind of disliked her.. jacket? Mostly it emphasized her chest too much and i kind of disliked that.

Persona 5 vs. Milgram: How One Story Succeeded at Portraying Teenage Sexuality Where the Other Failed

(Note: I am not personally a victim of abuse or ra**, so if I say something stupid here, please let me know. I am always open to criticism and I don't want to be an asshole.)

So this year I discovered both Persona 5 and Milgram, and I love both of them sososo much. I've infodumped about both of them for hours and overanalyzed the writing and symbolism both stories use to no end. Persona 5 Royal is probably my favorite piece of media I've ever seen. Milgram has brought me and my best friend closer together as we rant about our murderer blorbos and how well-written they all are together.

However, playing Persona, to me, is like the video game equivalent of watching a Shakespeare play. It's a masterclass narrative, very entertaining, and full of depth and symbolism to analyze, but it also has a bunch of misogyny that can really sour the mood sometimes. This seems to be a problem that the Persona series has had for a while judging from my experience playing P4 and what I've heard about other games, but in 5 it's like eating the most rich, satisfying cake you've ever had and then finding out some jackass poured pebbles into it. The way Persona 5 treats its female characters is by far my biggest problem with the game, with one problematic aspect in particular being its sexualization of the high school female cast, particularly Ann Takamaki.

Ann's storyline is mostly focused around her looks and how her appearance affects the way people treat her. At first, this plotline is taken in a promising direction. Because of her Caucasian ancestry, Ann faces slut-shaming and fetishization from most of her peers at school. In addition, Ann, along with many other girls in the school, is targeted by her abusive gym teacher, Kamoshida. It's not entirely clear how far his advances went with Ann specifically, but she is shown to face sexual harassment and coercion from Kamoshida onscreen, and Ann's best friend Shiho attempts suicide after being all but stated outright to have been raped by Kamoshida. So Ann is a victim of sexual abuse and a witness of her friend's abuse as well. There are plenty of interesting and thoughtful angles you could take with this story. You could show her reconnecting with Shiho and bonding over their shared trauma, with them going through the healing process together. You could show her being initially distrustful of the other Phantom Thieves until their bond grows stronger and she is able to feel safe around them. You could give her an arc about reclaiming her sexuality and taking back this part of herself that was used to hurt her.

What does the game do?

Barely fucking anything.

Ann gets little to no character development post-Kamoshida. Instead, her Confidant storyline is about her modeling career, with only one conversation where she sees Shiho again even acknowledging her past trauma. The game also continues to make her the Ms. Fanservice of the team, with constant gross jokes about her "hot bod" and the male characters being pervy around her. She keeps getting put in skimpy outfits and having to use her sex appeal to seduce enemies, as if the previous storyline never even happened.

For obvious reasons, I am very uncomfortable with any storyline that sexualizes minors, even if it's for a reason that serves the story. This is a general rule I apply to most media I consume. I'm considering completely skipping the Dancing in Starlight spinoff game because of the content I've heard it contains. And it's not just something I apply to Persona. I stopped listening to the song "Romeo and CInderella" by doriko despite really liking it musically because I was very uncomfortable with the story of the song. It's a problem I run into a lot when consuming Japanese media. However, I was thinking about this stuff a couple days ago, and I realized something. There is one specific piece of media I really like that shows a minor with sexual imagery that actually doesn't make me sick to my stomach. That is the song "Tear Drop" from DECO*27's music project Milgram.

(Note for Milgram fans: This part is based entirely off my interpretation of the offical English translation of the lyrics. I have not watched the voice dramas.)

"Tear Drop" is about a 17-year-old girl named Kashiki Yuno. The music video has several shots of her wearing lingerie, and the song approaches themes of innocence, sexuality, and relationships. Not only do I like the song, it's arguably my favorite song in the entirety of Milgram (although Backdraft also puts up a good fight for that title).

(Note from the future: I have been corrected. Yuno is actually 18.)

Why is it that I like "Tear Drop" despite depictions of sexualized teenagers usually making me uncomfortable? What sets apart Yuno's story from Ann's that makes it work?

(Note: I'm about to discuss a controversial aspect of Japanese culture as a mostly uninformed American. I may be about to say something stupid. If you're more knowledgeable about this subject than I am and you notice me saying something stupid, I am so sorry. Please tell me.)

In Yuno's first song, "Umbilical," it was heavily implied that she was involved in the Japanese enjo kōsai industry, which is often translated as "compensated dating." Taking the definition from Wikipedia (the most scholarly of sources), it is "the practice of older men giving money and/or luxury gifts to attractive young women for sexual favors." The song also implies that Yuno's "murder" (the premise of Milgram is that all of the prisoners the songs are about have killed someone) was an abortion.

So, Yuno was raped. I think that's quite clear. If you're a minor and you have sex with an adult, you were raped. No further clarification needed. Hopefully I don't need to argue that Yuno's abortion was justified either.

After the release of "Umbilical," Yuno was overwhelmingly voted innocent by Milgram's official poll. She garnered a huge amount of sympathy from everybody in the audience, and people expressed their sympathy for Yuno quite often. However, this rhetoric often took on quite a patronizing tone, like calling her "poor baby" or regretting that the circumstances of her life "forced" her into compensated dating to make ends meet (which, from what I understand, isn't quite how enjo kōsai works, but that's another discussion for someone who knows more about this stuff than me).

In Milgram, the prisoners canonically can hear what the audience is saying about them. And Yuno was not pleased.

"Tear Drop" seems to be almost entirely addressed towards the audience. In the image above, we see Yuno removing the metaphorical rose-colored lens from the audience to see the real her. The lyrics call out everyone who infantilized and looked down upon her, drawing similarities between the people she dated and the viewers. Here are some examples from the English translated lyrics: "'Poor naive little girl'? So off the mark, what's it to you? It's just absurd"

"Don't weigh me measure me against your morality Just shut it, will you? You know it all Feeling magnanimous? INNOCENT? I'm so not that Just shut it, will you? You know it all" "Caressing me with your 'Good girl' Who needs your self-righteous pardon?

I'm the one who chose, let you and you and you all in Happy or sad? Why decide? Where'd you get your half-baked sense of justice So nauseating...so creepy...will you please disappear"

Yuno is sick of everyone else making judgements about her and trampling over her own desires and wishes, and in this song she gives the middle finger to everyone who did so.

Generally, I am against portraying sexualized minors in media. However, I think it's important to realize that teenagers are not completely sexless beings. They have their own wants and desires, they want to be sexy, and it is important for them to have their own safe sexual exploration. And like it or not, sex has undoubtedly affected Yuno's life as a rape survivor. And unlike Persona with Ann, Milgram has the respect to not just pretend this part of Yuno's life never happened and allows her to be sexual on her own terms, instead of just pandering to the male gaze.

I grew up in the LDS Church. While I have not gone through anything on her level, I see parts of my own story in Yuno as someone whose sexuality was used to hurt me and who has coped with the trauma by redefining my sexuality as my own. I find "Tear Drop" incredibly inspiring, and I think that's what sets Milgram apart from Persona in its approach to teenage sexuality.

This is the second-to-final shot of Tear Drop. Her face is full of relief, with her clutching the jacket like a comforting blanket. Not everything she has faced is fixed now, and her teenage naivety is still clear in many of the lyrics. One song didn't melt all her trauma away. But she's getting there. She's making progress one step at a time. The final shot of the song is her pulling the jacket in, covering more of her body as she rests.

In Persona 5, Ann's sexuality is used to objectify her. In Milgram, Yuno's sexuality is used to empower her. That's what makes the difference.

Leo/need event teaser commentary

This is significantly harder to guess than the VBS one. On the one hand, the song strikes me as being more of a Honami song, but on the other hand, Honami has already had two events this year compared to Shiho's one. And I think maybe Shiho would still be a better pick in terms of plot, but the overall energy of the song is really making me lean more towards Honami.

So what's going on here then? This is much easier to guess a plot for than the VBS one at least. Well in Get Over It. and Connected by Our Stellar Song, Leo/need finally got signed to a label, but have yet to make their official debut. I'm guessing that this event will be seeing them debut, and I'm guessing we've got a gig on a boat. Not guessing, we are going on a boat.

Maybe this is to make up for the fact we didn't get any summer themed events this year due to the time jump after the wedding event. I'm guessing the plot will be something along the lines of Leo/need gets offered to do a gig on some cruise boat, and unless it happened offscreen, this will be their official debut show. That's why I think Shiho makes more sense in terms of plot, because being a pro was her dream from the start, it's the thing she's always wanted. But I dunno, maybe performing on a boat will bring along a problem that Honami has to step up and solve using her newfound confidence.

A little tidbit about this year's April Fools (my JP isn't that good though so there's probably some misinfo):

Mikudemy is a prestigious music school known all over the world, and just recently(?) open a Shibuya branch

they learn about music, but there are also classes about art and video making, also normal school subject stuff

one of the subject is idol history

there's a choir competition(?) in fall, but apparently they need to perform with an instrument, Rui plays an udo drum

the graduation exam(?) is top secret and only be told on the day of exam

Each group gets admitted to school in different ways:

Leo/Need normally gets an invitation letter, but with an additional letter that they might get "something special" from the school.

MMJ is invited to the school through MMJ!Miku, who might/might not have an acquaintance at that school (Mikudayo)

VBS got a challenge letter alongside their invitation letter from someone unknown (hinted to be VBS Miku with help from Mikudayo).

WxS helped Mikudayo who got her foot stuck in a ditch(?), so she personally invited them to school.

25 got in through 25 Miku's acquaintance who invited her to the school (Mikudayo)

WxS!Kaito is actually worried whether it's okay for him to be a student, but VBS!Meiko(or is it alongside L/N!Luka?) assured him that it's fun to be closer to the kids.

They're divided into 4 class, which is said to suit them the best:

Cautious Heart: Honami, Haruka, Kohane, Tsukasa, Mafuyu, L/N!Luka, VBS!Meiko

Haruka commented that their class should be called the Brave Class because of Kohane and Honami

Haruka calls VBS!Meiko as Mei-chan so Honami can call L/N!Luka by Luka-chan

Tsukasa thought that L/N!Luka is a doppelganger, before Luka said that she knows 4 people with the same name and face as hers.

(Also I thought Tsukasa called Mafuyu as Asahina, but apparently it's Asahina-san, I'm totally right about Tenma-kun though so yay!)

When they talked about graduation, Tsukasa and Mafuyu assured Haruka, Kohane, and Honami that because everyone in the class is taking lessons seriously, they should be okay. Mafuyu said that it's probably Dayo-sensei that issued the challenge letter, and Tsukasa agree because Akito and An would definitely take that challenge.

Tsukasa summing up their conversation with they should spend the remaining days until graduation confidently, and the four of them answered him. Tsukasa naturally takes the leader spot again lol

Passion Heart: Saki, Minori, An, Rui, Mizuki, MMJ!Rin, VBS!Len

Rui said that the name both suit them and not, but Mizuki said that it definitely suits the Rui now.

Apparently Saki also has her Tsukasa style introduction lol

Mizuki and Rui think it's nice that their name is easy to find, but Len and Minori said that it's fun to be able to know who their classmates would be. Rui had a monologue that he didn't care about it before because nothing would change every school year, but now it's different

Solid Heart: Shiho, Airi, Akito, Nene, Ena, WxS!Kaito

Akito thinks that their class' name is lousy, he's kinda pissed that Ena is in the same class as him (Shiho agreed that she also didn't want to be in the same class as Shizuku www)

Ena is surprised to meet WxS!Kaito lol, saying that 25!Kaito always have an annoyed face(?) and prickly. WxS!Kaito basically said the same thing as L/N!Luka iirc

Nene thinks that Shiho and Ena sings very well

Airi says that Akito (who's watching Ena's interaction with Shiho and Nene) might find it weird to see Ena acting like a big sister

Pure Heart (protag 25!Miku class): Ichika, Shizuku, Toya, Emu, Kanade, 25!Miku

Not much is known about Pure Heart class (somehow I haven't got any of their area convo after the class division, so this class story might progress during the day until the end of April Fool).

Emu immediately befriended 25!Miku (there's a cute animation of Emu running to 25!Miku and Kanade)

There's also small plot about a sport(?) fes:

Each Miku helps the class in preparing for the sport class (VBS!Miku helps Solid Heart, L/N!Miku should be helping Cautious Heart but they don't really need the help, MMJ!Miku should be helping Passion Heart but they also don't need the help... by elimination, WxS!Miku should be helping Pure Heart class)

Mikudemy agere au - Solid Heart Class headcanons!

-I don't know really know how else to word this, but grumpy babies. Pouty little fellas. Some of them have a hard time not feeling too embarrassed to let themselves slip, and a lot of them are the sorts of little ones to be very insistent about the fact they're big kids, thank you very much! Thankfully Kaito's up there as one of the best CGs out of the Virtual Singers, he's amazing at helping more nervous and hesitant tiny ones feel comfortable being as small as they need to be.

-Shiho doesn't regress as much as some of the others do, but her age range when she does is around 2-5. A relatively quiet little one, let her play one of her pet raising games or watch one of her comfort shows (any little kid shows with music make her feel small almost instantly, stuff like Jack's Big Music Show for example) with a paci and a plushie and she'll be content. Quite embarrassed about being small, but she's most comfortable with the rest of Leo/need and Shizuku, put her with one of them and she'll be very cuddly and clingy when compared to her usual self. While one may not expect her to be a good caregiver, she's actually really good at the job, once little ones warm up to her they absolutely adore her!

-Airi's a confident and somewhat hyper little one, normally regressing to around 4-7 years old. Super girly, absolutely loves coloring and playing dress-up, though she also loves running around and playing games with the others. Most comfortable being small around the other MORE MORE JUMP! members and Ena, though she feels oddly okay with being little with Akito as well. Her experience being an older sister makes her quite a good caregiver, alongside her experience on children's shows, she's amazing at taking care of regressors and making them smile!

-Akito has a somewhat large age range, about 2-7, though he's typically not much younger than four unless something bad's happened. Somewhat of a mischievous or pouty small one, but he feels especially happy when he's allowed to play or sing, and while he's a bit embarrassed by it, it he very much enjoys getting attention (he's a clingy little guy that will never admit he's anything but an independent big kid). If he's small he's practically bonded to Toya like glue, though he's okay with being with the other Vivid BAD SQUAD members or Ena if need be. He's a decent caregiver, while it may not seem like it little guys tend to think he's quite fun and cool, if a bit silly.

-Nene's probably the calmest of this class's kids, usually slipping to about 3-4. Very sleepy little thing, usually content to play simple video games or watch movies. Still can be a bit pouty at times, but all in all she's the most chill of the Solid Heart kiddos. Tries to act like she's okay with being alone, but let her be with Rui or the rest of WxS and she will be quite the happy little one. A bit nervous with being a caregiver, and she may not be the best at it sometimes, but she can be quite gentle and caring with smalls when it matters, they like her :)

-Ena also isn't the most frequent regressor, though she does do so every once in a while, normally to ~3-4. Probably the closest to a brat this class has, a grumpy small one who gets annoyed or frustrated easily. However, she can be cheered up somewhat easily as well, especially when she's allowed to draw or do other artistic things. Obviously most comfortable with Nightcord while little, though she also likes being with Airi and Akito, though she'd never admit the latter. Actually a very good caregiver, deep down she truly does care about others, especially little ones.

-WxS's Kaito is probably the best CG in the school (alongside VBS Meiko), so he's a perfect fit to help with this group of little ones. He's incredibly caring and gentle with them, helping them feel comfortable with feeling little and taking care of them incredibly well. He's always willing to put on shows for or play with them, and he's quite good at cheering them up or breaking up "arguments". Since he was made from Tsukasa's feelings, he tends to take care of him often as well, either by visiting the Cautious Heart Class or bringing him to them (N25 Miku does the same for Mafuyu).

-Their class is somewhat rowdy and chaotic, with the more fiery personalities of it's students leading to "fights" every now and then, though the other students and the Virtual Singers are usually able to break them up quickly. A lot of the time the Shinonomes and Airi end up sticking together and playing, while the quieter Shiho and Nene are either on their own or with each other. The five of them do play games and such outside together often, or talk about their shared passions. Kaito tends to put together little activities for the class he's "in charge" of to do together, and even if they say they're silly they truly do enjoy them.

-One of the main sources of tensions within this class are the Shinonomes, their squabbles happening near-daily. They end up bickering over somewhat silly things often, and Kaito or Airi and Toya have to be brought in to help them reconcile (and stop yelling at each other-). Despite these things, they do truly love each other, taking care of each other when one of them is big, and playing with or comforting each other whenever they need it.

-The other classes are also trying to help these kids feel more comfortable with being small, though they will admit that they're handfuls sometimes when they are. They love taking care of them and making them happy, but if they start causing trouble they're not afraid to try to break things up or very lightly scold them (nothing too bad, they don't want to make them upset!)

Could this PJSK character do a backflip?

A list compiled by someone who cannot do a backflip.

Miku: MMJ and WxS Miku can, VBS Miku probably could if she wanted to, L/n and 25ji Miku can’t.

Luka: I don’t think any version of her can. VBS and 25ji Luka probably claim that they can but make no move to prove it in order to mess with the others.

Rin: She’s a little less confident and fumbles the landing a bit, but she probably can. The only version that can’t is 25ji Rin, and L/n Rin has only tried once.

Len: Every single version of Len can do a backflip, including 25ji Len (this version is not aware he can do a backflip but if he tried he would land it).

MEIKO: Maybe she could, but she’s not going to try regardless of which SEKAI she’s in.

KAITO: Probably not. VBS KAITO is like Luka in that he claims he can, but he actually tries and fumbles massively. WxS KAITO is the most likely to be able to do it but he doesn’t try.

Ichika: Probably not, but if she really wanted to she could learn how to.

Saki: No, and for the sake of her health it’s best if she doesn’t try (she is lowkey disappointed by this fact).

Honami: No, and it’s never crossed her mind to try.

Shiho: No, she’s too focused on her bass and the band. She could maybe learn, but Ichika would get it quicker.

Minori: Not right now, but she’s learning! I believe in her (she has failed quite a few times now but she is getting better).

Haruka: If she wanted to learn she’d get it relatively quickly, but learning how to backflip is not a priority.

Airi: I can see this being a skill she picked up during her TV days. She’s confident about it, too.

Shizuku: I’m sorry I just can’t imagine Shizuku doing a backflip.

Kohane: No, but I can see Akito teaching her how for the sole purpose of surprising the rest of VBS.

An: Maybe? I can see her being able to but also it would be funny if she thought she could but misjudged how hard it is.

Akito: Yes, he is canonically good at anything involving physical activity, he probably learned how as a kid and was able to keep the skill as he grew up.

Toya: No, he wasn’t allowed to try things like that as a kid and I think he’d struggle with figuring out how to do it.

Tsukasa: He says he can, no one has seen him do one.

Emu: Yes, and she doesn’t realise it’s an impressive skill. The first time she did one in front of WxS while excited they just stood there shocked.

Nene: No, and she has no intention of ever trying.

Rui: He can’t, but the moment someone asked if he could he got the idea to implement the function into Robo-Nene.

Kanade: No.

Mafuyu: No, her mother would think it’s a waste of time learning how to.

Ena: No, and she doesn’t want to learn how, but she is lowkey jealous her brother can.

Mizuki: Probably not, but I can see them deciding to learn how because they’re bored.

I need to shout this at someone that actually played the game but Ann is incredibly gay right. Like I'm not looking too much into things she is just gay. Like how did the game say she liked the villains in comics something so tied to gay culture and still has the audacity to let us date her. How does she look at someone that is trying to tear her down and just be like she's so sexy, her confidence is amazing and sexy, wish I was just like her, and get away with being shipped with dudes. How does she talk about Shiho the way she does and Atlus has the audacity to pair her up with Morgana in the perfect reality (if I remember that spoiler right.) Are people blind to the way she talked to Makoto before she joined the team. Sure Ryuji and her are cute but like her interactions with him compares to the girls he can't compete.

This is also a problem in persona 4 like your telling me Chie Satonaka the girl that was called Yukiko's prince. The girl keeps talking about Yukiko in every link of her social link. (seriously you all she talks about her none stop. Look up her link Yukiko is mentioned a minimum of 2 times during each rank-up. It gets to the point of being like why are you even talking to me when you could just talk to Yukiko.) Like Yukiko, the girl that called Chie her prince never brings her up, yet Chie can't go a day without saying her name. How do you all date her when she's constantly talking about someone else. How the fuck does she suddenly like us. Narukami out her having so much riz he's making her bi .

Okay, let's get into this.

The new outfits, starting with Leo/need:

I, for one, do prefer the new designs over the old one.

I like the uniformity while still having things that make them them. I like that, so far from what I can see, they all have a star somewhere on their outfit (I say so far because Ichika's guitar blocks part of her outfit, so I'm not 100% sure they all have stars), with Shiho's and Honami's being more obvious and Saki's less so. They all still have their signature colors and I'm hoping that in future designs, we can see more of those colors come in, not the same shade obviously, I'm thinking lighter/darker depending on the person (like Shiho would have a dark green shirt, while Saki's is a pastel yellow).

I'm thinking about in terms of Huevemeber, where we have one color to work with (the hue changes every day) and we can only use different shades of that one specific color, you can't change the hue at all, vibrancy, intensity, sure, but if you're using red and you go towards orange, that's a new hue.

Now onto individual designs:

Okay, one: I love that Ichika's guitar also got a bit of a redesign. I like that they kept the belts on her thigh, it does look like the ones on her new design are a bit thinner and you can't see the ends of the belt, which leads me to assume that maybe these have a loop or a snap somewhere to make it look like that, or that they don't unbuckle and it's just a band.

As I said before, everyone seems to have a star somewhere on their outfit but we can't see if Ichika has one somewhere. If I had to guess, I'd say the buttons of her jacket.

The changes in her expression is something I also enjoy. Ichika feels more comfortable and confident. In her old design, she looks like she's a bit in shock, maybe considering things??? It's more... pensive I guess? So her standing there with more confidence shows how much she (and the rest of L/n) have grown.

First off: happy we can see more of her body standing upright rather than leaning over.

Second: I like the added details on her socks. As I said, so far, Saki's star detail is the most subtle. It's on her socks. It's something I don't think people will catch at first glance, unlike Honami and Shiho who both have it somewhere it's more notable.

I like that Saki's the one who got a bow tie in this redesign, I think it suits her. While I do like her old tie, I think the change is nice.

The double belt is a nice touch to the design, the only change I'd make is adding another star motif. Like having a metal star pinned there, or having one larger buckle that was shaped like a star.

Saki comes off as playful in her old design and calmer in her new one. The best way I can describe it is: ticking off something from a bucket list vs finding something new you want to pursue. I wouldn't think Saki wanted to be a professional just looking at her old design. I'd think she enjoys the keyboard/piano. Looking at her new design, it does come more across her being more pro.

That being said, I like that in both she comes across as the cheery one. Like, she just looks like the happy member of the band. It comes across differently in both, but it's the same general idea.

One thing I wish they added was a pair of ribbons, kinda like Honami's ↓ I dunno, I like having it look like something is holding her pigtails up.

Much like Ichika, one thing I notice is the confidence and being more comfortable. Honami looks a bit uneasy in her old design, like she's not sure if she's meant to be there, but she's there and she's going to try god damnit.

Not gonna lie, I'm going to miss her music note scrunchie. But the ribbon is a nice touch.

I need to point this out, but it looks like the red of her clothes have shifted to a darker shade. Like, in her new design, the red reminds me a lot of MEIKO, which I think it a nice nod to Honami's first event (iirc).

The star buckle and buttons on her sleeves are a nice touch. While I do like the star charm from her old design, I think the new design makes the star(s) work better.

The only thing I'm not too sure of is the belt/strap hanging on her skirt. I don't know if I'd rather move it so it's more on her hip or waist, or if I want to get it rid of it completely. I also wish they kept her fingerless gloves, but that doesn't bother as much as the belt/strap.

Out of all four redesigns, Shiho's is the one I like most. While I never had a problem with the color she's wearing, the overall outfit just never stuck with me. The thing I disliked the most was the bow, it looked so stupid. I genuinely like Shiho with the tie a lot more and I think she suits the blazer/suit jacket.

Again, I've never had a problem with the color, that being said, I do like that we've shifted to a darker green color (much like how Honami's shifted to a darker red).

As mentioned earlier, Shiho has stars in her outfit that are notable. One is on the cuff of her sleeve and the other is her bracelet on the same arm. I kinda wanna know if the bracelets match, so we have another star on her hand holding her bass.

I also like that she looks more relaxed, as opposed to her looking like she's trying to stand apart from the others. Which, thinking about it, is very telling of Leo/need's journey to becoming pros. In their old design, Shiho is the only one who's standing like she's working on being pro. Ichika and Honami look more like this is something they're unsure of but want to try, while Saki looks like she just wants to have a good time. It's very much a difference between career vs hobby. Shiho was the lone wolf before, but now she's able to stand with the rest of the pack, knowing that they're doing this together. She can relax. She looks confident in both, but again, like with Saki, there's a difference between the two.

On a side note, what's hanging on the side of her skirt? I wanna say it's a belt but I'm not sure...

....anyways!!

All in all, I like the uniformity (seriously, I like them in the same outfits, any time I play/watch a song with 3DMV, I make sure their outfits match otherwise it bothers me). I like the stars put throughout their outfits. I like the shift in Shiho's green and Honami's red. I like that they all look more confident. I like that they actually look like a professional band. I do think adding a lighter/darker shade of their signature color would have made their designs just slightly better, but other than that, I really like these designs.

it’s kind of a work in progress so this is not q definitive & some arcs are less developed than others, but we do in fact have something planned for everyone :3c let's meet the cast!!

starting with <3 bitter bitch besties <3

○ the fool – akechi

he has pretty much the same backstory as canon, but without Metaverse access; therefore his only outlet has been trying to prove himself academically etc. to show them all

it isn’t really working. even with all the effort, he still gets written off automatically most of the time

there is no arrest/probation/anything out of the ordinary that brings him to staying with Sojiro and going to Shujin, just a last minute arrangement by his previous foster placement

Akechi POV: you’ve been booted from a family who didn’t want you there for the n-th time in your life and are now moving to stay with some rando who doesn’t want you there either. and everyone at the new school immediately labels you a troublemaker with a problematic background

(of course Shujin is going to make up rumors regardless)

personality-wise, it is as you might expect from a no powers AU Akechi - at the start he’s a bitter, cynical bastard masking behind his Pleasant Boy mode

would have eventually snapped in some self-destructive way if he didn’t meet someone who gets it

rest of the story is spent rehabilitating this man with the power of friendship, mutual understanding, and insane romance. and flufy kity

akechi and makoto: the world is a cruel and unjust place. *minutes later* omg lady ann!!!

i. the magician – ann

flufy kity

backstory inherent to the arcana role

she does not have hang ups about not being human specifically and embraces cathood quite well

instead her issues stem from feelings of comparative inadequacy and not knowing what her role in life and on the team is supposed to be, especially after the PTs get a dedicated navigator

similar to her canon arc, she does mostly handle these feelings by focusing on trying harder & with more purpose rather than growing resentful

when Morgana coined the ‘Lady Ann’ nickname it stuck and now everyone calls her that

still has a widdle crush on Shiho

the only reason Akechi has any side confidants

vii. the chariot – makoto

Makoto handles pressure from Sae far worse in this one

attempted to investigate and expose Kamoshida’s behavior on her own last year and got kicked off the student council for her trouble

grades are suddenly hard to keep up even though she’s putting in the same amount of effort if not more. keeps being left ‘accidentally’ out of the loop about important info. school just kind of making it clear it doesn’t like her anymore

entire social circle crumbled and no support from Sae who at this point is simply mad at her for ‘sabotaging herself for childish reasons’

would have eventually snapped in some self-destructive way if she didn’t meet someone who gets it

disillusioned, desperately lonely, and stewing in a lot of suppressed rage

in light of this it’s not surprising that she and Akechi end up bonding pretty much right away in spite of his typically raised hackles

used to be friends with Haru in middle school

vi. the lovers – haru

while Okumura still has a Palace, his behaviour towards Haru is more distant and less outright abusive, and she does not have an engagement hanging over her

instead Kamoshida creeps on her, fixated on adding a demure chaebol princess to his conquests

Haru’s having trouble rebuffing him as she has issues setting down boundaries with men in general due to her proper upbringing, and is of course scared of his position of authority

in particular, the rooftop garden becomes a hazard for being cornered instead of a sanctuary;

(fortunately it is also a prime place to be overheard by anyone who's heading up there for definitely not a teen vigilante meeting)

Kamoshida lets out that Haru is the Okumura Foods heiress, which makes her seem like a stuck-up rich princess to the Shujin rumor mill and leaves her ostracized

with regards to Makoto: in Shujin Kamoshida Issues forced them to drift apart, and now, even though both of them want to reignite the middle school friendship, each is reluctant to involve the other in her own respective mess via association

after that is sorted, they reconnect and begin a prolonged awkward romance dance

(meanwhile the rumor mill is busy debating which one of them is dating Akechi)

iv. the emperor – joker ren akira

legal name, under which he is mildly famous, is Ren Amamiya, actual name he goes by is Akira

for these claiming your chosen identity reasons, his codename is Daybreak :)

his parents are both in the entertainment industry, and the second Palace belongs to his father

Dad Amamiya is a formerly acclaimed, currently washed-up movie director. a nightmare to work with who uses his old connections to run people he doesn’t like out of the industry and ruin their careers

his wife is aware of his transgressions but is too attached to the lifestyle to care

to Akira’s parents, he is more or less a prop in their public performance as a happy picture-perfect celebrity couple; in his father’s Palace, his cognition is played by an actor

he had long since learned that going against his parents achieves nothing, and has been going through the motions keeping his head down until he meets the team

the meeting is a chance encounter prompted by Emperor-typical overwhelming fascination with Ann, which in his case is because he’s That Much Of A Cat Person

rest of his arc is about separating himself from his parents’ legacy as somebody who still wishes to pursue a career in entertainment

ii. the high priestess – morgana

he has Ann’s parents and last name since she doesn’t need them anymore

unlike her, he doesn’t handle their constant absence well and is therefore desperate for the Thieves’ companionship (while being just as tsundere about it in human form as he is in canon)

he kickstarts the Kaneshiro plot despite not being on the student council: since he is a very special smart boy, he can absolutely solve Shujin’s mafia crisis all by himself!

(it is probably rather obvious how well this goes)

his arc is a more mundane version of his canon one about recalibrating the self-worth issues and loneliness until he can be comfortable with himself and his place in the group

his awkward crush here is converted into being an even bigger Ann Stan than the rest of them

still besties with Akira. also perpetual ninth wheel

ix. the hermit – yusuke

Madarame does not have a Palace

without the international recognition from stealing Kitagawa-san’s masterwork he has to subsist on smaller-time forgery and predatory contracts and the like

his main victim is Yusuke’s mom, who lived long enough to start actually raising her son, but her poor health made her the perfect exploitable dependant

after she succumbs to her illness, Madarame proceeds to take his frustrations over losing the convenient setup out on Yusuke in his typical insidious way

over the subsequent years trapped in an abusive living situation you’re told to be grateful for, the comments about how she would have lived longer and created masterpieces if she didn’t have to take care of you accumulate to create the most depressed teenage boy in the world

as far as Madarame’s concerned, if Yusuke’s too miserable to keep up with his schoolwork, it’s just another instance of him being a drain on everyone in his life. Madarame’s not going to cater to him and pay for his scholarship – he can just stay in and keep house, if that’s all he’s good for

that leaves Yusuke just listlessly haunting the place, convinced that all he can really do with his life is wait to die and go to hell for the sin of being himself: he sees his life with Madarame as perpetual penitence for his mother’s death, his work as almost ritual sacrifices to appease him, and the shack as his purgatory [--beginning navigation]

his Palace is stylistically themed after the Shinto Yomi with more general underworld theming as well; cognitive Madarame is of course the final boss, although he only drops the benevolent underworld guide pretence once thoroughly provoked

the gang finds out about All This after a series of Mementos requests from Madarame’s latest underpaid helper

post change of heart we’re getting Yusuke the fuuuck out of there

Sojiro ends up taking him in, first temporarily and then permanently

neither of us has the vocabulary to concisely explain the respective holes in their heads this Yusuke and this Akechi have about each other

team navigator. please take a moment to imagine yusukespeak navigator lines

iii. the empress – sumire

the Okumura setup is still happening (sorry Haru), but the PTs recognize it as bait and stay away, instead ending up doing a different palace entirely

the Palace Ruler for this arc is the Yoshizawas’ abusive coach (not the one from Sumire’s confidant)

a classic unethical teen sports situation with disproportionate pressure and a concerning disregard of their physical and mental wellbeing as long as they Get Results tm

neither of the sisters is good at standing up for herself, which in Kasumi’s case spirals into continuous self-denial for the sake of The Sport and in Sumire’s exacerbates her feelings of inadequacy

at the moment Kasumi is being pushed to compete despite an injury which would put her out of commission, which is the deadline/reasoning to deal with this ASAP

the palace theme is Colosseum/gladiatorial arena, with the implication of entertainment of the masses at the expense of the athletes’ lives

xi. justice – ryuji

Ryuji is the one to get slapped with the arrest record courtesy of Shido in this one

the consequences for a 14yo on scholarship and with no support system outside of his mom (except he just feels guilty about creating problems for her) are predictably devastating

he winds up at Shido’s Palace afterwards by accident while loitering around the Diet building, which is where his awakening happens

he’s spotted entering or exiting the Metaverse, which leads to Shido making him the job offer he cannot refuse

initially framed as “help with secret research” in exchange for erasing his record and bankrolling opportunities for a sports career, but it’s not like there are any easy ways out once the requests starts getting seedier

he’s just the Metaverse assassin/errand boy for the conspiracy, no astroturfed public persona

to an extent Ryuji convinces himself this is for the best since many of his targets do very much have it coming and it’s AN outlet for letting out some steam over the bleak as shit view of society he now has, but ultimately this arrangement and all the murder involved make him utterly miserable, and on a level he understands this is not going to end well for him

gives himself away to the Phantom Thieves early and in the dumbest way possible

for all the above reasons, he’s not at all hard to persuade to switch sides and start double-agenting

did you guess who’s faith no you didn’t

○ faith – hifumi

we just really like hifumi so she’s included

at first her deal is a toned down version of her canon arc, with her mom pushing her towards an idol-like career based off of shogi. then her father actually dies

mom’s grief response is to lean in further into building her career, thinking that this is what her dad would have wanted; Hifumi’s own grief response is to start crumbling under that pressure until “I wish I could just be the person my mother wants to see” is the prevailing sentiment

this is where Maruki’s unethical therapy comes in and actualizes her into the perfect teenage celebrity personality

thirdsem Hifumi is terrified she will never be enough as herself and it takes the team effort to get her to let go of the idol persona, but conveniently there are SO many people with parent issues here to talk to her about it .

bonus: xvii. the star – futaba

Wakaba survives the assassination attempt, but is left unable to continue her scientific work, igniting Futaba’s interest in researching the topic herself

her confidant’s Mementos quest block is still her uncle, who is not as horrifically abusive, but treats them poorly and demands Futaba reimburses him for taking care of them financially

Sojiro is still a pseudo-parental figure in her life, but his role is limited since he cannot insert himself into the situation without permission and Futaba conceals the extent of it from him

she becomes available as a confidant during Yusuke’s arc, which still overlaps with the Medjed crisis

her fixation with cognitive pscience leads to digging into the Phantom Thieves leads to offering to deal with Medjed for them – but only if they prove themselves to her by sorting out a specific request that hit a little close to home. cue Yusuke arc

from then on she’s their tech guy
